Speaking of Avatar.. Apparently I made up a version of the movie that doesn’t exist?

So, while my fiancé and I were at my parents’ house for Thanksgiving, we found my 13 year old Avatar Collector’s Edition 3-disc set, the first two being each half of the various editions of the movie included, and the third being a special features disc. Avatar has been my longest-lasting special interest, cycling through various phases of hyperfixation with other fandoms, you know how it is. Last night, me, said partner, and @birdnerd18 pop on the Collector’s Extended Cut and I hint to them various things I love about this cut! Because since I’ve been obsessed with this movie that the world forgot about for 13 years, I have the differences between the versions memorized. Like the alternate opening, and the drug scene, and the scene where Norm gets to fuck!

But as we watch through it, a couple of the scenes I was really excited for just weren’t there. I was really confused, and started wondering if they were maybe in the *regular* Extended cut. So, once we finish the movie, we look at the third disc which has an option to Just watch the changed scenes from each extended cut. Nope, the missing scenes aren’t in there, so out of curiosity, we watch through the Deleted Scenes.

My motherfuckers in Christ, I had made up a cut of Avatar in my head that didn’t exist. Like the scenes I thought were in it weren’t even fully animated. I made up the fucking Unobtanium Cut of James Cameron’s Avatar (2009) with the power of autism.

When they put Wakanda Forever on dvd/on Disney plus it better have the deleted romance scenes, as a bonus! I’ve never wanted to see deleted scenes so much until I found out about these.

I'm hinging on this, holding out on this hope with my toe nails because if you want those streaming numbers to be high and if you know of our existence, do it. Add it. Give it to me. Cause you make me happy ONCE. Give me a crumb, and I will literally watch it over and over and over that Avatar cannot begin to compare. I will make literally every other director envious of what was sprinkled into this movie as they cry about marvel movies. I can be your weapon or the hole in your ship, Marvel. So choose wisely.

Avatar 28 Deleted/Unfinished Scenes

Discovered 28 deleted/unfinished scenes for Avatar (2009) that range between 30-40 minutes of screentime cut out. These scenes actually add a lot more context, depth and exploring of the movie. Especially in areas that a lot of analysis is done about for the film. An example is a deleted scene of the Scientist in their avatar’s breaking into the RDA buildings and subduing Selfridge. Another is showing that the Na’vi attacking the RDA for the destruction of the Tree of Voices under Tsu’tey’s command, while also showing how the RDA used it to justify and double down on being in the right to destroy Hometree. Another is an extended scene of Grace’s death that depicts a shot of a real “Eye of Ewya” in the form of the Tree of Souls from above as the Na’vi are connected to the roots as they glow which look like the detail to her iris, which is absolutely beautiful and breathtaking and add so much more to the story. Highly recommend watching them.

Did you know about Norm and Trudy's romance in Avatar 1? It was from the deleted scenes. If so, what is your opinion on Trudy? Would you have liked her to come back in Avatar 2? How do you think they would have gone to do that?

Yeah it’s in the extended edition. Michelle Rodriguez didn’t want her character to come back in avatar two so even if they wanted to do that it wouldn’t be possible because she wouldn’t have joined. She didn’t want Trudy to die like that but went along with the storyline so I’m not entirely sure. I would have liked to see more of Trudy though because I love love love Michelle so much. She’s badass as hell and I’m excited to see her in fast ten soon.

Dang that Avatar 2 teaser really got me back into this Fandom. It's been way too long. Anyways, I was just wondering what your opinions were on Selfridge? Like, looking at the deleted scenes it seems like so much stuff was cut (which is why I'm glad people took to fanfiction to give more of an insight to the Na'vi culture and kept certain deleted scenes in mind). But I was wondering what your thoughts were. (Tbh it's a crime that for the 10 year anniversary that we didn't get a full 5 hour director's cut of the film. Seeing all of those deleted scenes fully animated and rendered would've been awesome).

Hi there! Yes, there was so much good material that was cut from the final product, but that’s the nature of the beast, I suppose. At least they released the extended version, as well as the scenes they didn’t use! 

So Parker Selfridge. My immediate reaction to him is that he’s a sort of bezos/musk. He’s entirely profit driven, at the expense of the na’vi (and probably the humans who work for him lbr). He’s like any CEO in terms that he’s more concerned with shareholders and stocks than he is with anything else. The chunk of unobtanium he has in his office is like a way of saying ‘you see how I have this precious resource as just a bobble on my desk?” 

You can also couple that with the na’vi artifacts he has in his office (a bow and what appears to be a piece of jewelry? idk), and it’s all very reminiscent of what we see in real colonization. Keep the pretty artifacts for display, and destroy everything meaningful. 

He ultimately seems remorseful that Quaritch decides to destroy Hometree with the Omatikaya still there. As bad as it is, I don’t think he had a full grasp of the magnitude of the situation until that happened. When bulldozing the willow grove, he just shrugs and says ‘he’ll move’ when Jake tries to stop the dozers. One person didn’t matter to him. But when he says Hometree going down in fire and smoke, you can see the realization of what he’s doing sink in. 

Then, the deleted scene where he tries to protest against Quaritch taking over. He storms in yelling and doesn’t stop until Quaritch bodily lifts him up and threatens him that he’s “a long way from earth.” (This even makes him nearly cry). Basically, Selfridge has to come to terms that he’s got a warmonger general in charge, who only cares about destruction, not the sort of “clean removal” Selfridge wanted. 

So, I think he’s a jackass who aided in the destruction of land, homes, and people. I think he was willfully ignorant of what was going on until he was forced to look at it in all its gory reality. He’s an interesting character in terms of having to reckon with his own actions in regards to the colonization of Pandora.

In regards to the previous post, me in a nutshell :

Me rediscovering Avatar and liking it better than in my memories, getting hyped up by the lore and deleted scenes and extended version and excited for the sequel

Me after watching the sequel, not because it was bad (it was great) but because... because

so apparently marvel is so thirsty to beat avatar’s box office record that they’re shoehorning endgame back into theaters with an “extended re-release” that shows “”new content”” at the new of the movie (it was never supposed to be in the movie and is literally recycled deleted content that may not even be canon and maybe a sauce packets worth of actually new stuff) and after feeling absolutely conned by the really shallow butchering of thor’s character and the pitiful amount of loki content in the actual movie, im just gonna drink a fuckton of zzzquil, pass the fuck out and have my friend smack me when the new content shows up in the theater
