atla live action thoughts: season one review

first things first: anyone who says the Movie That Does Not Exist is better than the live action is straight-up lying. the shymalan film fails on the criteria of even being a decent movie, let alone an adaptation. the netflix series, for all its problems, is at least an enjoyable watch with great effects, music and (mostly) appropriate casting. there's absolutely nothing to compare here - the netflix version clears easily.

now that we've gotten that out of the way, let's delve into the series, starting with the positives.

the good:

visuals and cinematography. they really did a great job of making it feel like a fantasy universe you wanted to be in & i love how vibrant the saturation and colour grading was. it made the world feel so much more dynamic and alive instead of the same flat, boring dullness that so many movies and shows have these days. sometimes i didn't even mind that i was being fed obvious exposition because at least they were giving me something pretty to look at lmao

effects and action. the bending was surprisingly good for the most part, and they did a good job of making the elements feel unique through the stunt choreography and the actors' movements. i'm immensely thankful they didn't try to skimp on budget by merely cutting away from fight scenes or showing us as little as possible. almost all the action sequences were fast-paced and engaging, and i was never bored watching them

acting. the main four were all great, but gordon cormier and dallas liu have to be the standouts for me. gordon brings such an earnest, innocent sweetness to aang that you can't help but like him, and dallas plays all of zuko's facets perfectly: the angst, the explosive anger, the bratty snark, and especially the deep-rooted pain that characterizes so many of zuko's actions in book 1. the range he has, especially when flashing from younger to older zuko, was insane. special shoutout to maria zhang and sebastian amoruso as suki and jet respectively, because they killed it

music. leaves from the vine instrumental had me tearbending and i love how they kept the iconic avatar theme while making it a little darker for this iteration of the story. in general, the soundtrack felt very true to the animation while still being a fresh spin on it

zuko and iroh's relationship and expanding on zuko's crew. i think the fandom universally agrees that lu ten's funeral and zuko's crew being the 41st division were the best changes in the series, so i'm not going to talk about it further other than to say that these scenes show me what the show can be, and that's why i'm not giving up on it

the bad:

characterization. almost all the main characters are missing the little nuances that made them so great in the original, but the greatest casualty is katara. i hate that they took away so much of her rage, and gave many of her traits and struggles to sokka. i don't think this is a problem solely with the writing though, because certain lines do feel like things animated katara would say, but the directing and line delivery don't have the same punch that made her so fierce in the original. this is an easily fixed issue though, so i hope they take the criticism and let my girl be angry and fuck shit up next season

exposition. this was primarily a problem in depicting aang's personality and the relationship between the gaang, because a) why are you TELLING me that aang is mischievous and fun-loving instead of just showing me and b) the gaang do NOT feel like close friends, mostly because they spend so much time apart in every episode that they have little screentime to actually bond and develop intimacy.

lack of focus on the intricacies of bending. for a show whose tagline is "master your element" the characters spend very little time actually... mastering their element. zuko is never shown to struggle with firebending (which is going to have ramifications when it comes to developing his relationship with azula), and neither aang nor katara ever learn waterbending from a master throughout the the entire show. i'm pretty sure aang never willingly waterbends ONCE in the entire eight episodes, discounting the avatar state and koizilla. bending isn't just cool martial arts, it's closely linked to the philosophies and spirituality of each nation, and i wish that had been explored more.

pacing. they really needed to do a better job of conveying that time passed between episodes because an 8-episode season is just going to FEEL shorter than a 20-episode one. the original animation felt as though they'd truly been on a long journey before arriving at the north, but here it feels like the entire show happened in the span of a fortnight or so because each episode seemed to pick up right after the previous. they needed to have more downtime within episodes instead of just rushing from plot beat to plot beat because it made everything feel a lot more rushed. give the characters and story time to breathe.

final rating: 7/10.

overall, i would describe the live action as a better version of the percy jackson movies - not an accurate or perfect adaptation, but a decent story that's very fun to watch. but what really makes me root for this show to get a season 2 is that it has a lot of potential and more importantly, a lot of heart. it's evident that the people who worked on it do genuinely love and respect the original series, and it shows onscreen.

regardless of anything else, this show created opportunities for so many asian and indigenous actors, writers and creators to tell the kinds of stories and play the kinds of roles they don't usually get, and that's something worth supporting. if they take the criticism from this season and improve, i believe they really do have something special on their hands which - although it might not be the original we all know and love - could still be a story to be proud of.

we've talked about the scenarios where angela would lose her composure at seeing amanda (s&b outfit and billion dollar gf dress as examples) in the rpf world we've collectively built, but now i wanna know what specific scenarios about angela amanda would completely lose her cool/have a reaction from? (raspy voice like in the tapple video? seeing angela's tattoo? could be anything!)

Oh, fucking love this question, thank you for it. Lets see.

2 things: 1 Eternal disclaimer about this all being in RPF universe/my own hc's about characterization I've decided on, not the actual people. And 2 This is not an exhaustive list of the ways I think this could go/the only ways these can work, Im just tossing out fun options that come to mind that I find internally consistent.

Okay logistically, anything to make Amanda uncharacteristically lose her shit over Angela has to be at least slightly uncommon/unexpected. So as much as I'd like to say something like "Angela in a tank top /sleeveless shirt", stuff that happens regularly needs to have an extra edge to it to explain Amanda losing it this time and not the rest of the time. Or at least losing it more.

So that said:

- Raspy voice is so fucking fun, yes please. So much potential...

One possible route is Angela loses her voice semi-regularly (unfortunately) due to starkid and moon goon and also just regular yelling, and maybe Amanda thinks she's used to it, (and normally tries to offer her honey or checks to make sure she's fine). But she's used to Angela's being voice completely gone, and one day her voice is more raspy/rough instead of being gone gone, and Amanda's normal affectionate concern is completely bowled over by her 😳😳😳 reaction to it, because oh fuck. OR, Amanda is used to the raspy voice (so she thinks), but Angela makes a sex joke or a flirty joke In That Voice and Amanda is SLAMMED by the thought of the same comments/voice in a VERY different context and Completely Ceases To Function. Bonus if its on camera/during a shoot of some kind so Angela notices the initial reaction and plays it up for the bit and Amanda is just. Not volleying it back properly. Or is volleying it back with WAY too much energy and everyone else is in the room like. 😶👀. The tapple video... the tapple video with all tge sex jokes and angela's voice being gone could be a VERY fun starting point for a fic.

- Once again falling back to the thing I've been gleefully chattering about. Amanda being flustered by Angela being the one to initiate/flirt. Angela being really forward/aggressive with flirtation, or bring Very assertive with her flirting, or just. Commanding. I think Angela flirting aggressively when she's all decked out in some ridiculous costume or putting on a goofy voice or leaning into the absurdity is something Amanda is used to/can handle. But, lets say, Angela not in a completely ridiculous character, or Angela playing a character thats only a mildly exaggerated version of herself, and being very forward/flirtatious/assertive towards Amanda. And for Amanda its suddenly like Oh fuck oh god oh shit . Because it doesn't feel like a ridiculous character like Angelo or some mustachio'ed old man being horny, it feels like Angela leaning in and oozing confidence and dropping petnames and it should NOT be working on her but it VERY MUCH IS. So much potential. Sooo fucking funny.

- Angela dressing up hot. I haven't sorted out the most fun consistent headcanon I want for this but IF we were to lean into Angela not dressing up as often I think its. So fun. To have the alternate dynamic of Angela dresses up hot for an event (Shourtney engagement party?) and Amanda sees her and nearly fucking swallows her tongue and her self control falls out of a fucking window. I know that's the go-to Angela flustered by Amanda dynamic but I think it could be fun the other way too. 👀

- This might be. me. lmfao. shining through but if we went the tattoo route we could also go an Arms™ route.... tank top Angela.... I'd have to think about it, to explain why it ESPECIALLY gets to Amanda, and maybe the tattoo is why.

- If we want to lean into the more explicitly spicy options and kind of mirror the S&B Angela flustered headcanon..... Angela shows up wearing something like a choker or something and Amanda. finds herself thinking. Many things. Many many things.

- This idea has JUST come to me so I havent thought through the logistics of it yet but. Angela showing up with a hickey or something and Amanda should be professional and normal about it but. But. But. (this could be very funny, very horny, or angsty! Or all three!)

17. Hi there. So I'm currently in the mood of reading wangxian AU or canon divergence fics. If possible the fics shouldn't be a short story, and I really, really just want WangXian, other characters may appear or mentioned, but I'm not in the mood of reading other chara's self importance appearance, so yeah just wangxian.

E.g a canon divergence when LWJ took WWX to an exile after the bloodbath in Nightless City, or a scenario where they were in the run, or the post 13 years WangXian just run away and don't give a shit about the revenge drama NHS and JGY are having about, anyway, it must be 90% of the fic, should be about wangxian.

To be more specific, perhaps some canon divergence where wangxian just don't give a shit about the cultivation world? You asked me, so as you're preparing to introduce Kaede in your fic, now I'd like to ask you: what is it about irumatsu that appeals to you?

Thank you for that question! I had to ponder it for a while and of course I have two different answers depending on which version of irumatsu we're talking about.

Like I said, and my tumblr has evidence of that, at first I was on board of kaemaki's train. I think what's done it for me was a fic on ao3, I believe it's this one. It's pre-game irumatsu and that opened my eyes. I guess I'm unusual in liking that part of their relationship where Kaede abuses Miu lol. Not that I like the abusing part, but I just see so much potential in it. How Kaede gradually opens up about the reasons she's such a b, how Miu becomes more confident and picks up some of Kaede's traits. The same could be said about their v3 relationship. Most of my answer is the same as yours. They're a perfect fit for each other, and a skilled story writer can get a lot from their dynamic.

And then we get to PF irumatsu and I probably need to put it under a cut.

Originally I wanted to write Miu closer to canon material, with her being a famous inventor who just throws schematics out of the window because she doesn't like them. Then I put in her in a huge corporation and assigned Kaede as her boss. Then there were sparkles. They had such amazing chemistry with all their bickering and slowly building interest that I realized I needed this story.

I made them out to be perfect enemies. If it were pokemon, Kaede would be a ground type to Iruma's electric. Iruma would be a Poison Orb to Kaede's Guts. Basically they need each other like no one else in the world, but because of all their trauma it's really hard for them to get along at first. And, this is a mild spoiler, Iruma's character arc is somewhat of a downward curve. You can see how it all started with her being outgoing and cheerful and then, well, Junko happened. Kaede starts as a piece of shit human only to change so much later on that you barely recognize her.

What are your favorite tropes/motifs/themes to write when you write about Kate and Anthony? What are some constants that you think are imperative to stay true to their characters regardless of the AU?

I think your signatures/strengths include intimacy in a variety of forms, including smut in general, but specifically porn with feelings. I truly think authors like you are important in giving respect to the skill it takes to write good sexually explicit material. 99% of readers (at large, not in this community) are so dismissive of this facet of writing, especially in fan fiction, which we all know is massively disrespected by people who don't read it. As is romance writing in general. I'm rambling. Anyway.

Anyway, thanks for all the stories and for fielding so many questions here. I feel like after next week, the anticipated lack of Kate and Anthony screentime (at least during this first half) will see an uptick in interest in new Kanthony stories/headcanons/missing scenes from fans, and of course no writer is obligated to fill that demand, but I hope you and the many other talented writers here find some inspiration in what little of Lord and Lady Bridgerton we will see.

Also, writing grounded, flawed characters that remain likable but eventual find growth, often with the help of professional therapy. I LOVE seeing therapy come up in fictional narratives. We all need it. I wish it were more accessible in real life.

Lavishing Kate with the character building and time and attention her character deserves, the way the show didn't (and will no doubt continue not to).

Um... I have more, but struggling to articulate it at the moment.

(Also, Kate and Anthony being exhibitionists, haha. I love the different ways that pops up in your stories. These two, I swear.)

So many good questions here.

My favorite tropes/themes – that’s a hard one! Exhibitionism, absolutely – I just feel like canonically they’re the kind of people who get a thrill by tempting fate. Just right out on that gazebo where anyone could have caught them. 😂 I absolutely love writing dirty talk, I love an age gap, and I love playing with dom/sub dynamics (it seems fairly universally accepted that Kate and Anthony are both switches, and I find something so swoon-worthy about one of them willingly submitting to the other because they have full trust in them, and they communicate openly). Outside of smut tropes, I’m a sucker for hurt/comfort and bickering as an expression of sexual tension. Also miscommunication because they both have their Jump to Conclusions mats out at all times.

I think in every universe, Anthony is obsessed with Kate and Kate is at least a little reluctant to fall for him for one reason or another (mostly because he’s a sad little rich boi).

Unfortunately, yes, fanfiction does tend to be the butt of jokes. I hate when people use “it’s like fanfiction” to describe a poorly written piece of media – when I think that most people who read fanfiction can name dozens of stories that are better than the media they’re based on. And I think people realize how hard it is to write good smut when they read bad smut. 😂 I’ve seen some truly horrendous phrasing in smut.

Also agreed that professional therapy should be more accessible. I’m glad that the newer generations are speaking so openly about mental health, and the stigma continues to diminish. Therapy is healthcare, like anything else. And I think Anthony and/or Kate working through their issues with the help of therapy a) makes a lot of sense for their characters and their trauma and b) shows that they’re committed to being the healthiest versions of themselves for each other. (I have semi-recently become aware that a lot of people have had bad experiences with therapy, so this is not to diminish that! I personally have had good experiences but I understand that’s not a blanket statement for everyone.)

Fanfiction really gives you a wonderful opportunity to dig into the characters and flesh out lots of details about their backstories, in a way that TV shows aren’t usually able to do. I particularly like writing from Kate’s perspective because I relate to her so much, though it’s also very fun to write Anthony’s unhinged inner monologue!

since chiyo has history with kojirou, her ex, that impacted her greatly, i would love to kinda explore that with someone, be it in a romantic plot or between friends. chiyo encounters ko bc of her work ( he, too, is a mangaka ), and it's clear that there's something unresolved between them at least on her side. someone should force her to talk about it : )

in general i pre-established connections, so anyone from the grove, her former village, or whatever other connection we think of would be cool!

chiyo struggles with her faith a lil bit in this verse -- she believes deities exists, but she struggles to believe that they really care about the mortals who worship them. she's respectful towards them and whatnot, but when she prays, it's like going through the motion rather than believing she's heard. i wanna explore this with a muse who is pretty devout, especially bc i'd eventually like to touch on the favor that eilistraee shows chiyo

chiyoko " i feel the weight of everyone depending on me " hisakawa vs muse who thinks she needs to stop worrying so much about others and think about her own self interest for a change

since she naturally ends up assuming the role of " tav " and thus the leader of sorts for the group, i'd love to explore the discomfort that actually brings. just because she can't stop herself from helping others in their time of need doesn't mean she's having a good time doing it asdf

Okay more omegaverse Mötley, let's get it! This time different pack dynamics, a joint post with @anaalnathrakhs , thanks for the idea!

I don't think I'll get to all the intricacies of every possible Mötley dynamic, so if y'all like this holler if you want a part 2.

Let's get this show on the road then!

Alpha Tommy, alpha Vince, beta Mick and omega Nikki - Okay this is the most accurate one for them to realistically have. Tommy and Vince are both super dominant dude bros who think with their dicks instead of their brains- both of them being alphas also explains the super friction between them that comes in later years that we see in resurrection of crüe I mean they literally say and I quote “if Tommy and Vince want Mötley crüe to happen, it'll happen” it's giving alpha, for sure, they are both also very selfish, Vince more so than Tommy but Tommy has been described as a brat way too often for me not to mention this. Beta Mick being the calming middle ground that low-key sucks at his job of being the calming middle ground cause he hates conflict, and more often than not instead of jumping into an argument with one of his bandmates to cool the situation down also makes sense, he'll just be silent in the corner, hoping that it'll end before he has to patch things up after the damage is already done and too severe for him to fix after the fact. This is one of the reasons why I believe this is the most accurate version because even with the safe setting of being in a pack together, the conflicts would still be high because of the two alpha's with core belief differences and the beta who can't deescalate situations, which would lead to them being in the news for public spats a lot more, just like they were in real life. Nikki being an omega also makes the most logical sense to me, he's a lot more sensitive and genuinely caring then the other guys and him having shame for being an omega just works intrinsically well with his character. It also explains why he's so desperate to be the boss/leader of the band and the one who's more likely to take charge because he wants to feel in control of things for once in his life and he takes it a bit overboard. That being said, in this set up, they are basically just normal Mötley, except with a little bit of classificationism on Tommy and Vince's end. Tommy more so on the ground that he was raised by a father that told him to treat an omega with the utmost delicacy and be a gentleman, and Vince more so out of its the social norm in the 80s to see omegas as lesser then - in later years they come around from their ignorance though as seeing everything Nikki accomplishes as an omega makes them see their way of thinking is wrong. Mick has no such prejudice towards Nikki, which is why I think Nikki has such a deep and special bond with Mick, because he didn't underestimate him or think he was lesser than any alpha who worked in music.

Alpha Mick, beta Tommy, beta Vince and beta Nikki - this dynamic is so funny for me to think about because, I just talked about how Mick is conflict avoidant and as an alpha conflict is pretty much inevitable and with three insane betas that he is now the leader of conflicts are guaranteed! He'd constantly have to put out fires the guys would be making (literally and figuratively) like- “Vince, why the fuck did you sleep with that alpha's omega, he's coming here to beat your ass and I gotta stop him now!” And Vince is just sitting on the couch not a worry in the world cause he knows Mick is gonna have to sort this out for him, because he's the leader of the pack. All the band would put Mick through these kinds of situations constantly because, one they knew Mick would get them out no problem and Mick wouldn't punish them for anything at all and two their all subconsciously jealous of Mick's higher status and trying to get back at him by getting his conflict avoidant ass into fights with random alpha's. They are not aware of this fact either really, but in the back of their minds they know why they want Mick to get a black eye every now and then. Other then that I think this pack is kinda not functional, Mick can't keep them in line extremely well, not because he can't intimate them but because he can't be bothered and this bites him in the ass all the time as the boys have no real figure to keep them in line and so they wreek havoc on anything they can which is the reason Mick is put through so many fights. But the one place this dynamic would work is the music, you know how I said Mick can't be bothered to keep them in line, well in the studio, that's all he does, he keeps them on track and focused and creative as he's genuinely leading them as a pack leader but outside the studio, in a world where Mick doesn't give a shit to correct them, the three beta guys take out their feelings of insignificance on the general public with no restraint. When Mick goes into rut though their all there to support their old man, they have to switch out every round because Mick is insatiable and he goes for so long and with his back it's obvious that he's in a lot of pain so they all try to do most of the work but Mick doesnt allow them to at all when he's far gone in rut. Mick absolutely tires them out, which is an accomplishment in itself and when the guys are lucid again with Mick there definitely not above teasing him for what a freak in the sheets he is in that state, Mick growls at them and dips until they can stop being immature. (Also I'll just make this side note here, but I kinda don't think Mick would willingly let anybody help him through a heat. He thinks it makes him look weak and he hates being dependent)

Alpha Nikki, Alpha Tommy, beta Vince and omega Mick - Nikki is a heavily controlling alpha though and while he doesn't have that prejudice against omegas like I think Tommy and Vince would low key have, he is a lot more protective and possessive of Mick and Mick does not care for being owned at all and so this would be a constant battle of whims against Nikki and Mick, Nikki trying to get Mick to be careful and safe with himself and have more forethought and Mick just doing whatever he feels like in the moment without forethought and he gets away with it too, because all he has to do is play up his omega act a little and Nikki just cannot bring himself to punish Mick and Mick knows that. I think Nikki would hand out punishments but none that get any of his band mates to listen lol. Tommy would also be super protective of Mick but unlike Nikki's suffocating chokehold on him, Tommy's style of dominance would be more Mick's style, easygoing but there for Mick if he needs anything only an alpha can provide. Vince being a beta in this situation, again just makes me laugh, because he would constantly be trying to have a pissing contest (figuratively but I'm sure he's literally challenged them to one before) with them and Vince looses every single time. This would give beta Vince even more of a complex and I kinda think this would get him to quit the band much sooner actually, funnily enough. Also this is the only two alpha set up that I think would actually work, as Tommy and Nikki are so close, it'd be impossible for them to get into any arguments that weren't of the absolute essence.

Alpha Vince, Omega Tommy, omega Nikki and omega Mick - oh boy, is all I kinda gotta say about this one honestly. Vince absolutely feels high and mighty in this one and the other guys fucking despise it. He makes a very big deal of being the only alpha to an omega harem (his words, not mine). Nikki and Tommy both constantly undermine his rule and make him go insane and Mick just straight up ignores him unless he thinks the cause is important enough for him to follow directions. Doesn't actually know how to run a pack and constantly fails to keep everything together. I mean this pack is all fun and games for Vince until Mick, Tommy and Nikki go into heat at the same time. This one would be a total disaster and not even in a funny way…okay maybe a little funny, since classificationist Vince eats shit every time he thinks he's in control of the omegas, and I think this dynamic would get him out of that terrible headspace super quick, so it's a win ig.

Alpha Mick, alpha Tommy,alpha Nikki and alpha Vince - utter shit show, like this is the worst combination….but fuck is it fun to think about, I mean it's a ticking time bomb, there would constantly be fights and or tussles that would leave them with scars they could never fully recover from and yet they would be so fucking ride or die for each other it's insane. Like they want to kill each other constantly and pheromones are running high, but if some punk tried to mess with any of them, they'd never see the light of day again. This combo is volatile in all the best ways and they bond by knocking the teeth out of some drunk schmucks face. Just alpha things <33. Ruts would be fucking insane, it's a lot of growling and fucking and domination, they would all be sore for weeks to come afterwards.

Alpha Mick, alpha Nikki, alpha Vince and omega Tommy - they are all so protective of Tommy. While Nikki and Vince argue about what's best for the pack, Mick is just vibing with Tommy and keeping creeps away from him by freaking out said creeps with his own terrifying personality when Vince and Nikki are too absorbed by other things. But when Nikki and Vince are sober and not at each other's throats they also make sure Tommy is as comfortable and well looked after as they know how to give someone else. This would be the most wholesome-ish combination of all the dynamic pairs because it's basically just Nikki and Vince having a marital fight while Tommy and Mick snuggle on the couch and watch them duke it out.

Omega Nikki, omega Tommy, omega Mick and omega Vince - I know this is not gonna be the answer you expect but I kinda think this one would also be one of the more functional ones. As a group full of omegas in an “alpha's” career realm of rockstar, they gotta have each other's back and this gives them a common societal enemy to fight and we know how strong these guys can be when they have a common enemy. I think they're all even more protective of each other then the all alpha pack tbh and I know I really haven't mentioned nesting at all in any of the oner dynamics but in this one it would be prominent. They make a big communal nest together and all of them sleep together. Omega Nikki would be so happy to finally have such a safe environment to be in and he'd for once in his life feel proud to be an omega because not only are they brutal to every alpha that dares to try and either enter or break their pack because they think it's non valid but they are all so strong together, that he never feels scared to stand up to anyone of any dynamic ever, because he knows his pack has got his back. Omega Nikki finally has no shame to be an omega in this combination. And the other guys don't argue as badly at all as other packs mentioned in this post. And picking a leader also isn't hard, they decided that Mick is the leader for all intents and purposes, but Nikki is the one that actually runs it, Mick is just the main protector as he's the oldest and therefore wisest omega. The heats would also be such a comforting experience, it's all so comfortable and everybody understands what the other is going through, Mick even joins in for this dynamic aswell.

Beta Mick, beta Tommy, beta Vince and beta Nikki - So much alpha envy it's kinda insane, but this time with the added ingredient of a disgruntled Mick in the background, not because he's also envies alpha's (..okay maybe a little, but he won't straight up be petty about it, it is how it is) but because all the guys are making a total undeserved disaster, subconsciously because they are not seen as important in the chain of society.

Hi! I found your blog through the female rage substack article that you posted and I’m curious about a couple things (so I hope the tone of this ask will read as genuine/non-confrontational etc).

I really liked the article and the anti-gender essentialist content, so I looked through the others and eventually found your jegulus article (which I read and also liked) but I was sort of surprised to see that you are a part of the hp/marauders fandom. For me personally, everything related to that franchise has just been tainted since the whole jkr terf debacle really took off. I was big on hp when I was younger and wolfstar is a ship/dynamic that I enjoyed back then, so I’d probably like your stuff if I were to read it. But I decided some time ago to give any and all hp content the chop, because to me it didn’t feel right to engage with it anymore. So I was just wondering how you feel in that regard, if you don’t mind sharing. I don’t have anyone in my internet content circle that still actively posts about hp and if irl friends still enjoy it then it’s not something we talk about, so I’d just like to know how you juggle the ‘two sides’ in that sense of your trans-positive/anti-essentialist beliefs and fandom content that’s still so intrinsically connected to jkr and her politics. (Also, sorry if you’ve answered a question like this before. I scrolled through your blog a bit, but if yes then not far enough.)

and i'll do my best to answer your question about hp, but i'm gonna put it under a cut because i know this is a contentious topic + i have a feeling my answer's gonna get long--so if anyone doesn't want 2 read abt my conflicting hp-fandom thoughts, just scroll away please xx

so, quite honestly, i'm in agreement with you that the entire franchise is tainted by jkr. the truth is that it was never really my intention to join the fandom--i read a single fic because it went viral on tiktok, then decided to rewrite the fic from another character's pov just for fun. at that point, i hadn't read any other hp fic and had never been involved in any kind of online fandom space, and although i'd read the hp books + watched the movies growing up i hadn't touched them in years + was so far removed from the franchise that i vaguely remembered hearing jkr had said some terfy stuff, but wasn't aware of the extent to which her politics were like. actively and significantly causing real-life harm.

anyway, i'd done a rewrite for fun of another story i liked and had posted it on ao3, and that had received a handful of people commenting + talking about the story with me as i wrote but had remained pretty self-contained + small. i was expecting the same sort of thing with the hp fic i rewrote, but instead someone posted about it on tiktok and it went viral, and then suddenly there were thousands of people reading every ch update and hundreds of comments. like i said, i had never been involved in an online fandom space before, so i sort of awkwardly stumbled into it and tried to figure out what i was doing as i finished up writing the fic. this was at a point in my life where i'd recently moved to a different country and had to go back in the closet after being publicly out for years, and this online fandom space became my only queer community and a bit of a lifeline in that way. i started making actual friends and talking to people + getting more deeply involved in the community aspect of things.

at the same time, i started actually educating myself on jkr + her politics + her impact, and the more i learned the more uncomfortable i became with being part of anything hp-related. now, i've been writing hp fic for almost two years and 'active' in the fandom for ~one and a half, and despite being grateful for the friends i've made and treasuring the space i've been able to cultivate, i've become increasingly disenchanted with 'the fandom' as a whole and have increasingly found it to be a hostile space, so i've sort of taken a step back from broader engagement and more + more have limited my interaction to just my mutuals here on tumblr. unfortunately, i think many of the 'bad parts' of this fandom are somewhat built-in because of the source material; there are a lot of people who agree with jkr's politics to varying extents and that can make it kind of a miserable place to be sometimes. i know many people insist that hp can be completely removed from jkr, but i don't think that's the case, and i've talked on my blog before about the fact that her politics are built into the very foundations of the text, so i think it's necessary to acknowledge her influence if we want to actually engage with hp at all in a way that isn't just perpetuating her politics.

all that being said, the point i'm at currently is that i'm not really sure that this fandom is a space i want to be a part of forever. again--i understand how it can be lifeline for some people and a queer community they might not have elsewhere, because that's been the case for me. but for me personally, as much as i value my own carved-out space, it doesn't completely outweigh the negatives that i have found myself coming into contact with more and more in this fandom. writing hp fic is also something that i keep strictly separate from 'real life,' contained solely in this online space, because i know that any engagement with hp is a red flag for many, many trans people and i don't want to bring it outside of this space. within this online space, i don't keep it a secret that i write hp fic; it's right at the top of my blog so that anyone who wants to can easily block and unfollow me. i only post my fics on ao3, where they are clearly tagged as harry potter fanfiction, and i only post about hp fic + fandom stuff on this blog, which was specifically created for that purpose. i've requested that people no longer post about my hp fics on platforms like tiktok where the algorithm could send it out onto anyone's fyp, and that request is also in my pinned faq. keeping my hp fic as contained as possible to only people who are already engaging with hp fic is one way that i try to mitigate any harm that might be caused by my fics contributing to hp's ongoing popularity.

the other ways i try to mitigate potential harm are by actively discouraging people from giving any financial support to hp + jkr and by being very vocal about my politics on this page, so that anyone who is following me will be getting pro-trans and anti-gender essentialism politics along with any hp engagement. i also don't engage with hp uncritically; i am specifically critical of the shitty politics in the books both in my posts on this blog and my fics themselves. i don't make it a secret that i think the books are politically rotten all the way down through to the foundations.

none of this is to say that there's, like...a Right Way to engage with this content or a set of rules that, if followed, Absolve All Shittiness. this is just an explanation of the personal evaluations i've had to weigh when it comes to deciding how i'm going to interact with content that is fundamentally opposed to my own politics. and again, i don't blame people who think that any amount of engagement is morally untenable and completely block it out. this is a growing source of cognitive dissonance in my own life, and i'm increasingly considering whether/for how much longer i want to continue to write fic + be involved in hp fandom. but for the time being, i'm still here + still writing fic, and i guess my feeling is that any harm that fic causes is a drop in the bucket, and even if i were to stop writing it wouldn't necessarily have a huge impact either way. i'm just some random guy online like everyone else; even though i talk about politics, that doesn't mean that i'm asking to be held up as some sort of moral standard, nor do i think anyone should be expected to be 100% politically perfect in every action they take--like, for me, writing hp fic kind of falls into the same category as like...eating mcdonalds even though i think factory farming is fucked, or buying + wearing makeup sometimes even though i think the beauty industry is fundamentally corrupt, or paying to see the new guardians of the galaxy movie in theaters even though i think marvel movies are us military propaganda. i don't think "no ethical consumption under capitalism" is an excuse to completely abandon any attempt to mitigate the harm our actions might cause, but it does matter to me the way in which someone is engaging with a fundamentally broken/corrupt piece of media beyond simply whether or not they're engaging at all. at the end of the day, it's up to everyone on their own to evaluate where they draw the line on hp, and i am not looking to make that judgment for anybody else considering that my own thoughts + feeling about it are still changing.

Thanks for the ask! <3 Some ppl may have heard me say already but it was different for all three of the Three Sillies. (This is necessarily answered from the perspective of an anime-first viewer btw so please forgive the episode references if you're manga only! idk what would have happened if I met their village versions first...) Anyway, I liked Vueko right away. Did not realize she was an all time favorite but figured she'd go in top MiA characters. Later events in the season then added to how I saw her (the elaboration in that post is under the picture of me holding a belavue drawing and crying lol), even more as i read the manga and participated in fandom, but I was basically very fond of Vue right away and then liked her more and more.

I found Belaf likably quirky-sweet as soon as we meet him in ep1 but wasn't *particularly* interested. It was e7/e8, his pain and tragedy and the depth of what his transformation meant, which really got it started, and then it grew even more just like for V. Since then i just get ..aaa... sooo much fun out of thinkin' about him, both alone and in the context of his interpersonal relationships which were only briefly (but deftly and strongly) sketched out in canon....... i can pinpoint my return to 'writing for people other than just myself' as the night after episode 8 aired when i couldn't not start writing fic about the super brief scene of Vue feeding him. even for other fandoms and original work, i seriously doubt i'd be sharing writing online right now if not for B and V.

Waz took the longest! although i'm a fan of his seiyuu, during the airing of s2 i didn't have strong feelings about him, negative or positive. once i had seen the full arc and started making fanwork of and talking to people about the other two sages, i realized there was a weird old man shaped hole in my conception of their lives. so i was like ok let me think about him a bit. people come down various ways on how they imagine his interiority and feelings towards the other characters, whether he merely saw them as tools or treasured them as people or some combination. while i'm open to a range of Waz takes, i personally came to see and depict him in the way that i found most appealing -- quite sincerely fond of B and V, loves them even (not sure he'd use that word though), not remotely malicious, but fettered by commitment to his visions and an associated empathy blind spot that leads to quite awful and tragic things in the end. once i felt like i liked and understood all of them, it clicked so fantastically and unlocked so much fun to be had with fanwork of all three's various moments and dynamics. it's now hard to think back to a time when i wasn't fascinated by all three of them. : )

What are your favorite tropes/plots in fanfics? And what are your fav ship to read each of the trope/plot with?

So, my fav tropes/plots (with some specific ship related to them):

The 'to be loved is to be changed' kind of trope, which is not really what it's called, but it's like healing from trauma (or anything in general, really) through someone's love and closure (like A gets better cause B is always around) and I'm an absolute sucker for this trope, especially when it's well done and kinda realistic (I love realistic narrations, like teen wolf is supernatural but i love when the writer puts in the realistic aspect of their lives in such a universe). I like this with basically any ship I've ever read so far.

The 'true mates'. I'd go highs and lows to find this kinda trope in a fic, especially when they already kinds fit the naration of the canon or simply fits the dynamics. I love this one with Sterek, to me it's just a lovely way of being in love that makes it all look more and more lovey-dovey. (I know it's not realistc, but nothing is ever one sided, right?)

Angst with happy ending. I can't read angst if there's no happy ending, i would end up crying all day long and the fic would probably be stuck in my head forever. (I read them rarely, after i read one a long time ago it just got in my head and it still makes me cry, it was so beautiful and painful at the same time😭)

Generally, the 'first time' plot is one of the best for me. It could be sexual or not, but i always love readin them. I usually do this with Sterek and Henry and Alex from 'red, white and royal blue'. Warms my heart every time.

Gor the ships, i generally follow the same plots for every ship, like i read all of the above for Sterek (and I also write them myself) but the true mates is mostrly for the ships that ki da fits in my eyes. Like sometimes Hannigram when I'm feeling nostalgic.

For the 'to be loved is to be changed' (and yeah i took it from the tiktok trend but it fits so nicely and every single edit makes me cry) it's my favorite in basically every ship(?).

Let me correct myself, the oldest, first one that ever make me discover fandoms in general, Kaito and Shinichi (detective conan - yeah, I know, but it was the first one and i have to honor it by mentioning it here)

It just warms my heart cause it fits every single ship that you could think of cause it's basically what love is to its core (at least in my eyes). Like, you love someone and they love you, you two grow together and become someone else (usually a better version of who you already are) and just love each other through the whole progress and keep investing in one another. You decide to change some aspects of yourself (usually something that you don't like as well) to show your partner your love and the effort you put in your relationship.

Ok, i totally went off road with this😅

I learned about Exile first because a Toku actor I adore was in one of their MVs, which was how I learned about LDH. Back then, Gekidan wasn't even really a thing. I discovered Sho through a comedy movie later and was immediately charmed by him. Next I discovered Onocha due to him being in the MV for a LDH girl group ("Love", they sadly disbanded pretty quickly).

It took a while before I really got into Gekidan after that. I did notice Keita in a couple of things here and there, but he had yet to make his big break.

By chance I discovered the Gekidan stage "Attack No1" which stared almost the whole group (minus Kanta because he wasn't part of LDH yet). Let me tell you what a blast that was. Luckily it was the first version with Kenchi and Tetsuya (both got later replaced in the second version by Naoki and Naoto, while Gun took over for Keita).

If you ever manage to get your hands on that stage, please watch the first version. It's one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen. Shin and Yuta kiss on the lips, Tetsuya marries off Onocha to Masa, though in the end it's Keita confessing (he's pining the whole time) and running away with Onocha. It's very wild.

It was around 2014/5 when I really got into the group, which was triggered by Omi's first movie and soon after the first HiLO season. Then Kamen Rider Ex-Aid and Ultraman Geed happened at the same time, which was quickly followed by more HiLO, and after that there was no turning back for me. I still remember how Onocha congratulated Yuta on the Ultraman Zero role with Yuta saying that he was feeling a lot of motherly love coming from Onocha. XD

Idk if you know about their old manager's blog where he talked about the group and the members and what he thinks about them, saying that even though Gekidan is one group, it's actually two odd families living side by side with Sway being the weird uncle who shows up from time to time. Family A is Sho (papa, gamer), Shin (mama), Keita (too quiet/calm, often wonders what he's thinking) and Kanta (takes too many photos). And family B is Yuta (cook/househusband), Masa (owns too many cleaning products), Onocha (gamer/likes to annoy Sho) and Nobu (big brother).

(Also before I forget it; you are so right Gekidan + taiko drums are a match made in heaven. I really hope there will be a chance to see Aki, Yuki and Ken-chan doing it together with the others.)

It was really great to see Aki, Yuki and Ken-chan watch the JAM recital and cheer on their future group mates. They talked about it on Insta, saying that Aki was the responsible older brother who took his younger brothers to a concert. They were even decked out in JAM merch and all.

I think the photos of the summer outing are still up on the LDH Izakaya insta (I do remember that both Aki and Onocha posted about it on their insta as well). I guess we'll have to wait and see if they do the LDH Izakaya summer outing again this year and who gets paired off together since it's always odd pairs.

Wow you've known them for such a long time!!! Even longer than Kanta's history!!! and omg even seeing a stage with the Exile members...!! the only things i ever found of gekidan are just with the current members 😔

Ohh the gekidan family dynamics is so adorable 😭😭 that's exactly why i wanted to see interactions between the senior members and the newbies 🙏 i wanted to see where Akishio would put himself in the current dynamics because eventho he's new to the company, he acts around gekidan like he's always knew them personally (thanks to being in highlow & prilege i assume). He wasn't afraid to jab or tsukkomi the seniors unlike Maeken and Sakuyuki are.

I'm also interested to see how Machida Keita would act around the new kouhais because he seemed to be fond of Kanta. And like you said he's actually pretty quiet (with his reputation i thought he would be more talkative tbh) so it'll be interesting to see how he acts around new people.

I remember watching the Izakaya livestream with onocha, maeken and sakuyuki, but i guess i missed the one with akishio and onocha 😣 i hope they still have archive of it on CL

What made you ship it?

I admit that I wasn't especially rooting/shipping them while I read the book the first time, even if I didn't hate it! I was re-reading it after watching the 1996 series (that and the 1996 TV movie are the only adaptations I've watched entirely) and the ship seemed more natural years later. It's been a while, so I'm sorry for not being able to go into too much detail. Still, something I really love about how these two are portrayed is how the two can be honest and call each other out when needed (thinking about the "Badly done, Emma!" scene) without having the other overreacting or turning into a huge, unnecessary drama, on the contrary, they stop and think about their own behaviour. It's so important, especially in Emma, the heroine gets a pass for a good half of the story, nobody except Knightley argues with her, so for all this time she doesn't take him as seriously as she should, and is even smug when she sees that Harriet followed her advice whereas Robert didn't listen to Knightley's (which wasn't even the point of Knightley's frustration btw).

I guess that I like the dynamic where an overconfident character gets paired up with another who doesn't hesitate to call them on their bullshit, and who is their equal? xD Plus, I recall that Knightley's confession was very poignant... I need to re-read it!!

What are your favourite things about the ship?

Since Emma is not my favourite Jane Austen story, and I only learnt to really appreciate it later and I require re-read it, I can't say for sure. I'd say that I really like how the two have known each other forever - literally, Knightley held Emma in his arms when she was a baby! Talk about a "slow burn"! It's interesting to imagine how the two went through so many stages of life together, saw each other grow and mature, how the way they looked at one another shifted, and how their feelings changed and they could hardly help it. There's something quite natural in this that I like.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

The age gap isn't that bad, especially in context! Or more unpopular I guess: the story didn't need to be "modernised" for today's audience (looking at the 2020 adaptation). For fuck's sake, can't people just accept that things were different back then?! And still be able to say "I'm letting it slide because of context, it's fictional and it works here (❤️) but I wouldn't accept it in real life.". I don't like that they made Knightley younger, and changed the dynamic with Emma that much (from what I've seen), it was unnecessary and just to cater to some holier-than-thous. They could have kept an older Knightley and added some scenes to show his softer, more vulnerable side.

What made you ship it?

The fandom made me! 😂

After finishing the first Ace Attorney (the version with "Rise from the Ashes" of course) I went and browsed the internet to find some art and fanfics, and then I discovered the Kink Meme. It's there that I've stumbled upon the pairing. There was also some pretty fanart of them, younger, investigating together. I started to really like the idea of them being both old colleagues (and lovers, having a torrid affair in Gant's office 🤣).

What are your favourite things about the ship?

The potential for two dynamics:

A) an "evil" power couple, with the two just being unapologetic, ambitious, ruthless men. And these two keep bickering like an old couple, and it's a mess of arguments and make-up sex, the two manically laughing as they tempered evidence, etc. (okay, I know I'm going overbroad here, I'm kidding! xD )

B) "We're both disillusioned by a corrupted system, at first we really wanted to make it honestly, then we started getting our hands dirty and now we can't go back or stop. We're colleagues, partners in crime, weird friends... sometimes lovers. We're both messed up, but we don't care anymore, as long as we achieve our goals and have each other."

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Since I mostly low-key ship them and haven't found that many stories about them, I don't think I have one? Otherwise, it's more an unpopular opinion about each one of them, not the pairing?

I'd say that I don't believe either of them ever sexually harassed or "seduced" Miles......................... 😒

I was reading through this thread on statistics and mlm slash reblogged by @darktwistedgenderplural, and reflecting on it a bit, as one does. I’ve been active in fandom spaces since the turn of the millennium, and I’ve seen similar versions of this argument on tumblr and livejournal and in other sites for over two decades now. I do think it brings up some reasonable statistical points. At the same time I think that sometimes we think of fandom as a space immune to the influences of patriarchy, when in fact it still at times influences us and nudges us toward which characters we prioritize. I find that I have to do a lot of questioning of my own biases as I explore my various fandoms. Other people’s experiences may vary—maybe your experience is different than mine—and I can really only speak to my own. Maybe what I have to say here resonates with a few of you, though.

Anyway, let me shift to talking with a more positive lens. The more I considered the ideas in that original series of posts, and the more I thought about people agonizing that fic about female characters is harder to achieve than fic about male characters, the more it made me grateful for Young Royals and how well-written its female characters are. Two out of its five main characters are teenage girls, and Sara can even be called the show’s B Plot Protagonist. (Thank you again @heliza24 for sharing your meta about that with us! I think about it at least once every three days.) And Sara and Felice are both what I would call authentic and textured characters, who’ve got really interesting backstories and desires and flaws at play, the same way you get that for dynamic male characters. There’s so much for fanfic writers to work when it comes to the two of them! And I’ve enjoyed writing them both in my time in this fandom, and I’m proud of what I’ve managed to achieve so far in my writing.

Since the post addresses shipping as something fandom loves to do, I also think there’s lots of potential ways to ship the girls on Young Royals—whether that’s shipping Sara and Felice with one another or with other people, or whether that’s shipping the other girls in with other people various femmeslash ships and het ships. I admit I haven’t written Felice/Sara yet, but I’ve written Felice/Maddie and Felice/Rosh and Sara/August. And of course, in the moments when Heart and Homeland allows, I’ve explored the Manor House Girls friendship pentagon, and all the complex interpersonal interactions therein. I’ve seen other great ideas thrown around by other people, too, like the folks who’ve come up with Linda/Kristina backstory in the 1980s and so on.

I hope that as YR develops as a fandom and as we collectively write more fics, we’ll see the number of fics about female characters continue to grow alongside the number of fics about male characters. And also, once again, I think it’s so awesome that Lisa Ambjörn invests so heavily in the female characters on her show. She’s just about my age and my fandom generation, and I know there’s interview notes about her writing m/m slashfic for that wizard fandom back in the early 2000s. Her writing takes what’s awesome about fanfic but also mixes it with what’s great about professionally published fiction, and she did not neglect her female characters in the process. It’d be easy enough for her to just focus on cute boys and ignore the girls, but she doesn’t. And I just thought it was fair to give myself space to gush about that a bit, when a few of the comments in the post I was talking about alluded to writers who aren’t doing the best with the women in their stories.

Outside of Young Royals side note: even if I’m not writing fic for these other shows yet, I’m additionally grateful that TV right now has a whole crowd of female characters I can get excited about. There’s the girls of Heartstopper including my beloved Elle Argent, there’s Claudia in Interview with the Vampire, there’s Rose and Essie in When the Angels Left the Old Country (ok that’s a book not TV but I still love it), there’s Helen and Noelene on The Newsreader, there’s Kleo and Lidia Poët in the shows named after them, there’s Maribel and Fanny and Clara and Nines in 45 RPM (although god, nowhere near enough people have seen 45 RPM, and I wish there were more people out there who’d seen it!) That’s just off the top of my head. As more women have been included in writers rooms and have gotten to be showrunners for things—still not nearly enough, but an increasing number—I do think representation for female characters has gotten much, much better overall.

I also realize that… well. Over time, with hindsight, I’ve been able to appreciate female characters from old fandoms that I didn’t before. Like Relena in Gundam Wing, who I in my teen years used to bash relentlessly. Or Éponine in Les Misérables, who I used to roll my eyes at for being in tragic unrequited love, or something. But now I can see the roles they play in their larger narratives, and the nuances of who they are. So I think there’s also a lot of good representation that’s always been there, even if I haven’t always seen it.

I’m hoping that the trend of more and better female characters continues, and I’m hoping that the fandom statistics shift to reflect that with time. Are there any female characters on anyone else’s mind, while we’re chatting about this? Who are your favorites right now?
