Bloody Mary

I like to make this spiked and virgin! It's a good hangover drink as well as a lunch drink. It's also a good one to make spiked for yourself and then a portion virgin for the kiddos so they don't feel left out at the garden party.

Ingredients

4 oz. of your favorite tomato juice (I use regular Clamato)

1 tbsp. Prepared Horseradish (Cream or standard both work, don't use fresh)

2 tsp. fresh lemon juice

2 tsp. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1/8 tsp. table salt or to taste (optional, I usually don't add salt but my mom likes adding a bit more)

1/4 teaspoon Tabasco hot sauce

3 tbsp. vodka (equals one shot, don't use if making these virgin)

Whisk together all the bloody Mary mix ingredients, transfer to a bottle and shake well just before using.

Fill a tall glass with ice; pour the bloody Mary mix on top until the glass is full.

If using the vodka, mix the vodka with the bloody Mary mix in a shaker over ice before pouring your glass; shake for 10 hard strokes, strain and pour into your ice-filled glass.

Garnish with a pickle spear or celery, a wooden skewer of olives and a lemon wedge.

I had this thought awhile back but Thorin is not popular amongst the dwarves (he only got 13 of them to follow him), and Bilbo is not popular amongst hobbits (the loner bachelor of Bag End). So I really need Bilbo in Erebor/Reshirement fics where they thrive in each other’s societies.

Bilbo was born to be Consort under then mountain, and everyone loves him! The Council appreciates his polite but firm negotiation tactics and this hobbit has a good head for business. And the people love how friendly and personable he is every time he comes to market. They don’t see many royals who remember their mother’s favorite caserole recipe after all. And by extension, Thorin gains popularity because he can’t be all bad if he managed to land such a little charmer.

Likewise, I need hobbit wives tripping over themselves to get to the forge to see the tall, silent, stunningly beautiful new blacksmith and did you hear he used to be royal? How did Bilbo Baggins land that hot piece of ass? And of course Bilbo has made him so nervous over all the different rules in hobbit society that most of the time Thorin merely nods and smiles at him, and isn’t that cute? He’s shy. So they naturally take him under their wing, inviting him to afternoon teas to fatten him up, and Thorin thinks all Shire food is amazing so he’s quick to offer up his compliments on their cooking which nearly sends them swooning. And of course the male hobbits want to be jealous, but Thorin is fair in price and his work is immaculate and he wears Bilbo’s flowers proudly so he’s certainly not straying from Master Baggins, he’s just very charming and they can’t begrudge him that.

Like Bilbo and Thorin should make each other better. And certainly it doesn’t have to be “everyone loves them and there’s never any problems”, but I just feel like it should be a deal of “FINALLY! I’ve been a duck out of water for so long and this is clearly where I belong.”

Aragorn and Arwen have their son Eldarion twenty years after their wedding, and at least two or more daughters. That's the extent of canon info about their family after LotR. If we're going by what Tolkien's ghost would think is canonical pseudo-medieval gender roles, that's twenty years where the Reunited Kingdom has no heir.

Which is fine for Peredhel-turned-mortal Arwen, when elves can go centuries between having kids, and Dúnadan Aragorn, who knows he's got another 80-100 years in the tank before he *coughs politely* can't empty the tank. The Arnor Dúnedain, who for generations as an entire people have been crashing on Elrond's couch while larping at still having a kingdom, would understand this intuitively. But the people of Gondor (only a small percentage of which I think are Dúnedain?) may not quiiiiite understand this, not completely internalized it.

So they are hovering around Arwen, this beautiful alien creature that just landed in their backyard and snapped up the most available bachelor before he even came on the market, and she sometimes says outrageous things like "oh, I remember King Eärendur's wife liked this cookie recipe" and the servants and guests at tea cannot help but share a Look because that was 2160+ years ago, and does someone have to ask her if . . . if she knows what sex is?

In a pseudo medieval society it is the queen's duty to bear an heir, but like, she was raised an elf. Can we pressure her like we do our own kind into having grandbabies ASAP, or will she turn us into frogs? It's possible there are women who go through their entire reproductive years in between when Arwen has these kids. If Eldarion is her first then gossip in Minas Tirith for those twenty years must have been insane, waiting for an heir. Do elves even breed like we do? Did Beren and Lúthien spawn Dior Eluchíl in a pond? Did Tuor have to carry Eärendil like a seahorse? Do we have to catch a stork in the cabbage patch? Is Aragorn gonna have to lay eggs? What's the hold up?

🪶 You had to be the one to initiate your first conversation. The two of you exchanged smiles and gave each other waves when you crossed paths. But apart from that, you and Elliott never spent time together that lasted more than a minute. He was always so caught up in his own world, distracted and staring off into the distance. You later found out that he tended to zone out a lot, thinking about his drafts and meticulously judging his own writing prowess. "Being alone tends to do that to you," Elliot would muse. The two of you soon made an effort to spend Friday evenings in the Stardrop Saloon, hiding away in your little table in the corner. He would drone on about ideas for his book and you would complain about crows picking at your crops. It would usually end with Elliott drunkenly dancing on the table while you laugh at him. He's a happy drunk, no shame hiding under his lucious hair whatsoever.

🪶 He helps Willy tend to the shop sometimes when he doesn't have the energy to write. Or he would be with Leah in the saloon, both of them complaining about their art/writing block.

🪶 He's a master of calligraphy, I decided. His letters to you are always so well done. You end up keeping his letters instead of throwing them away because they were too pretty to be lost in your endless letter drawer. He writes poems to you, most of them about you. He always signs it at the end with "Yours, Elliott"

🪶 He collects sea shells. Makes them into bracelets after Leah taught him how to do it. It was no wonder why you couldn't find any shells when you would wander to the beach in the afternoon. Elliott already got to them first. You've noticed that both Leah and Willy have shell bracelets, wearing them wherever they went. When you and Elliott became friends, he sent you a bracelet and a letter accompanying it in your mailbox. Elliott bashfully told you that he got your wrist size correct because he would hold onto your wrist when crossing to the other side of the beach, across the wooden bridge you built for it. And here you thought he was holding onto you so neither of you would fall in the water. Turns out, that was only half the reason.

🪶 When he moved in to live with you, he spent his first few weeks reading about crops and farm animals so he can help you around the farm. He enjoys spending time in the coop with the ducks the most. He even bought a duck from Marnie to have as his own, much to your amusement. It's the only duck that lives inside the house. He gave you the honor of naming it.

🪶 He and Willy would have dinner together sometimes (Elliott and Willy friendship, my beloveds). Willy made him his famous crab cakes and Elliott has never known peace since. Willy had to give Elliott the recipe so he can make his own batch to eat anytime he wanted. Elliott cooks them for you too.

🪶 He keeps a notepad tucked in his pocket for when inspiration strikes. He told himself that he would write ideas for his book the moment he gets them. But he doesn't end up doing it. He tells himself that he'll remember them when he gets home. Most of the time, he doesn't.

🪶 I like to imagine that Elliott is a merman that Willy accidentally caught in a net one night. He got into writing after he realized he can hold paper without ruining it now. He rarely talks to anyone aside from Willy, who caught him in the first place, and Leah, who accidentally caught him swimming in the river as a merman. But honestly, this is a story for another time.
