First time cosplay as Ghoul, from Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker at the very first Tropicon convention in my city. I had so much fun! And so happy I got to cosplay such an awesome, yet underrated and underused character, and to kick off October 1st with a Halloween Character
More pics to come!

Thoughts on THE CROW (2024)
You know that TikTok of that emo kid, sitting in the front seat of his car, screaming "MY HEARRRRRRRT! IIIIII LOOOOOOVED HERRRRRR!"? Well, this new version of The Crow is that for two hours.
This is not a criticism. In fact, shock of shocks, I found myself kinda... sorta... loving this movie.
The path that the 1994 version of The Crow found toward its cult reverence is one steeped in tragedy. The untimely passing of its lead Brandon Lee during filming gave a tinge of romance and lost potential to what was, in essence, a big, dumb action movie. A big, dumb action movie that boasted a solid lead performance and the pinnacle of nineties set design and cinematography, but a big, dumb action movie nonetheless. No matter how good he was when the cameras were on him, Lee wasn't cast because he was a master thespian. He was cast because he was Bruce Lee's kid, and that might move a few tickets. The Crow was Bob and Harvey Weinstein's play to get Miramax in a position to compete with Warner Bros. and Batman, and one of the most infamous on-set accidents in film history led to a periphery demographic of Goth kids that are still cosplaying, buying the soundtrack, and lighting candles thirty years later.
The 2024 version of The Crow appears to be an effort to legitimately make the film that that periphery demographic seems to have been seeing in a mirage for the past thirty years, and on that score, I think it succeeds. It's open-wound sincere love story between two druggie kids, the tragedy that separates them, and the passion that brings one of them back in a rain of bullets and blood. I saw someone on Twitter call it "Twilight for scumbags," and that person deserves a Pulitzer Prize. It's pitched at that level, only instead of long, interminable stretches of the two leads staring at one another, it's broken up by bad guys getting shot in the face. There is a place for this.
FKA Twigs plays Shelly, and it's as though she sprang fully-formed out of Tim Burton's head with her compact, twee, English-accented Gothness. But I find Bill Skarsgard's Eric to be genuinely endearing. Whereas Brandon Lee's rendition of the character was an Alpha Chad who came out of the grave knowing combat tactics, the Skarsgard take is troubled, though well-meaning, and seemingly doesn't have a plan in his quest for revenge beyond "They can die and I can't." And the sight of this gaunt tree-branch taking shotgun blasts at point blank range sells the enormity of the odds against him.
The love story and character aspects of this movie are so persuasive that when the action does eventually get here, it can't help but suffer in comparison. Rupert Sanders is no Alex Proyas, and while he nails the impact of violence, the actual geography seems to give him trouble. Is it just me, or does the opera house in the climax appear to have too few floors than the sequence requires?
So which one is better? I don't know, and frankly I don't care. In a rational world, we could show appreciation that James O'Barr's source material was strong enough to facilitate two wildly different cinematic approaches. But we don't live in a rational world, and remaking a mid-nineties comic book movie is tantamount to blasphemy.
But what I do know is that we're gonna get older. New folks are gonna move in. And when you ask them which version is better, the answer won't be as one-sided as you think. Because if there's one thing that literally every version of The Crow has thought me, it is this:
Nothing this earnest stays dead for long.

Oh boy, uncommon hypnosis awakenings?
Mine was Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker which doesn’t actually have a mind control scene until past when I got so freaked out i stopped watching but is in large part about the joker kidnapping and torturing Robin until he’s totally broken and can be remolded into Joker Junior! Which is you know close enough to hypnosis that my brain over time twisted the trauma and obsession to that.
I still hold this over my dad’s head for excitedly sharing this with me when I was like 6. On the bright side, I came to peace with my fear in around my mid teens and now it’s just a fetish
Oh damn!! I think every good fetish tiptoes the line between fear and arousal, doesn’t it?
I think that’s such a big reason people love villains. Everyone loves a good villain. Speaking of, there are a LOT of Hypno villains in Batman: Mad Hatter (saw a tiktok cosplay and literally swooned the other day), Hypnotic, Poison Ivy, and now the Joker is out here brainwashing people??
Unrelated but do you think I could be adopted by the Batfam? No particular reason 👉👈

I totally see where you're coming from with how you like your mix of comedy and seriousness and I think I'm really similar! I can definitely tolerate a lot of cheese but I'll almost always consider it a one off situation. I recently rewatched Batman and Robin while my wife was making a cast of my body so we could make cosplay and it was just so funny and silly that like it reminded me of what one of those really campy comics would look like in real life and I respected the fact that they could commit to it that way and make an artful movie that brought that to life but there were a few elements that didn't make sense to me like Barbara being Alfred's niece that I was just like whatever man and I knew I couldn't like... use it as a foundation for my basis of characterization, like I can with other media! I really love the animated series too, I grew up with it being my first experience with Batman and I always really respected it as a medium that I could trust to be satisfying and whole. I also really really liked Batman beyond because it felt like the closest continuation of that story even though I know it's really not canon and it kind of doesn't work, I like to view it as like a semi-official what if fan fiction from the original writers lol
I completely get what you mean about the comics, cuz I kind of view official comics like fanfictions even in their own right? I mean when you think back on like Bill finger and Bob Kane like eventually every other writer is going to be writing fanfiction of their characters but it's really fun to go through all the different Batman media and see whose stories you kind of like more and then whose stories you kind of tend to avoid
and when I mentioned I knew you liked comics, I was also speaking more from the perspective that you seem to have more knowledge about them Rather than I thought you had a preference for them, because you put together that comic PDF with batjokes moments and I was really impressed with that ☺️
i love your telltale fics and the games as a beautiful breath of fresh air into the life of batman so sometimes I like to imagine the animated series would be a great way to say where is juce 10 years later, if those universes were more cohesive setting wise lmao
Yeah, Barbara randomly being Alfred's niece is definitely one of the aspects of B&R that just… I guess it breaks up the campiness? That and Ivy being in love with Freeze for no discernable reason. And teaming up with him even though he'll kill her plants. And poor Bane! And then that weird bit at the end where Freeze is sort of forgiven but Ivy can't be? And Alfred almost dies. Should taken all that stuff out and added more camp.
I really enjoyed Batman Beyond too! I didn't even realize a lot of people didn't like it until recently. Honestly it's one of those things where I don't look into the reasons too much. lol I liked it and I'm fine with having liked it, no notes!! (OK I sorta lied. That bit in JLU where they made Bruce Terry's bio dad, that was bizarre.)
I am definitely in the "anything not created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane might as well be fanfic" camp. Like, sure, if DC puts resources behind a project, it has a better chance at being worth your time, but when I get down to it, I can't put a lot of weight behind the idea that someone's official derivative story is more valid than another someone's derivative AO3 post just because there was a cash exchange with a company that owns the original "asset." People who want to lean into that idea, that's their business.
The wild thing about the batjokes spreadsheet is I know that it's only a fraction of what's out there. I have read hundreds of comics at this point and I still feel like it's not enough to totally have a handle on things. Especially knowing how little I've retained. 😅 But that's another reason for the spreadsheet!
Thank you for enjoying my fics! And for implanting the idea in my head of a Telltale universe animated series… Just hijinks and maybe a little more murder with John and Bruce, bestest buddies.

I honestly wasn't planning on posting shit tonight but I hate the taste of alcohol and trying not cry myself to sleep tonight so I'm going to talk about my favorite fictional character of all time Doctor von fucking Doom. I love spiderman, The turtles,Batman and his family, and of course the transformers. But the only time my mom or dad didn't let me buy a comic was because It 400 Dollars of a Doctors doom variant cover so yeah I love this man. At one point and time I had read almost every battle world comic for just a chance of seeing of seeing this man.
Doctor doom has almost single handly ruined my life on several occasions I'm not a merch kind of guy but Doctor Doom figures have had me rethinking. If doctor doom doesn't have any glazers I'm fucking dead I love this man more than food I swear to Doom I wish I hadn't moved out or I would show the Doctor Doom shrine I had in my old bedroom I didn't pray to god it was doctor doom you know how doctor doom can say anything and im like i agree with ever this man said. good well written doctor doom is like crack to me I hate reed richards with passion because he dose. But sad news O haven't read anything about Doctor Doom for few years now because "it was unhealthy what I would do for Doctor Doom" my multiple therapist have said trust me I kept firing them until one agreed but they never./j
But honestly I remember I used drop Doctor Doom quotes like I was bible preacher but he was hurting my wallet to much so I stopped reading marvel in general for awhile just so I didn't accidentally run into this man and start over. My dream cosplay is Doctor Doom if I'm ever in good enough shape I will be making it so fast then followed by a redhood cosplay.
Doctor Doom gave me confidence no hero ever could because who else could drop a line like "I was a GOD Valeria I found it beneath me" and have you like so true Doom being god is truly second to being doom. The gods of his own god damn universe don't want smoke and if they do you get this to the beyonders "We are Beyond. Dreamers. Destroyers. All of reality our whim. Who dares stand before us?"
"I. DOOM."
yeah I love this man and I wish marvel make a good film or even good cartoon adaptation.

when did you start cosplaying
Well, that depends on your definition of cosplaying. I started recreating actual specific characters, and calling it cosplay, when I discovered Homestuck, in 2015 (I've since branched out beyond Homestuck, as you can see). But I've been wearing costumes to conventions (and Halloween), mostly of more generic things like werewolf and vampire (both of which I've made my own fangs for), or zombie, or ape, or even a sea monkey, on and off since the early 1980s; that's when I started doing makeup. I've been winning my local Scottish dance group's annual Halloween contest, for which I need to represent the name of a dance, since the early 2000s. And I still remember my mom helping me make a Halloween costume of a bat (not Batman, an actual bat) in the mid/late 1960s.
