under the cut bc i don't want to force anyone to character hate if they don't want it (it's not hate just. a longtime gripe abt o.rym)

orym continuing to bring up his family as like. a trump card any time someone suggests listening to ludinus or even that he's right about the gods. it's so?? honestly i really don't like it as a viewer & it's their game so my opinion doesn't really matter, but if a player at my table consistently refused to consider options that the rest of the party was entertaining i think there would be a point where i'd be like "either your character needs to compromise, or you need to make one that will." bc like. on one hand i understand this being something central to orym as a character. but at the same time d&d is a team game and like. for the sake of everyone else's fun sometimes you just have to entertain the rest of the party even if it's not "what your character would do."

like it's so frustrating bc i feel like so many really interesting storylines & potential avenues have been completely cut off bc of orym, where the other characters & characters from previous campaigns have been willing to make concessions.

and the fact that his hatred for ludinus keeps him from even entertaining his point abt the gods. like ludinus killing his family makes him unforgivable (valid), but when the gods kill thousands of people's families it's "well mortals kill each other too." make it make sense.

it's so frustrating bc imo no other character in CR's run has been this unwilling to compromise for the sake of the party. keyleth, vax, & vex all worked with Raishan, who was responsible for the deaths of keyleth's people AND worked w/ the dragon that killed the twins' mother.

veth worked w/ ludinus & essek despite them being responsible for her husband's imprisonment. caleb worked w/ multiple assembly members.

like i don't hate orym, he has his moments & liam has always been one of my favorite players. but it's like he's completely unable to see past his own personal tragedy to consider what's actually best for exandria as a whole. you could argue that ludinus is doing the same thing and that's the point. orym accuses ludinus of being blinded by revenge/pain, but he's the exact same in that respect.

i'm not saying orym needs to sign up with the ruby vanguard or kill the gods, but the refusal to even consider that the gods might be harming exandria as a whole, or that the world could exist without the gods despite all the evidence to the contrary speaks to a moral/logical rigidity that he & ludinus share. and that could be interesting to explore but imo orym is in the exact same place he started at the beginning of the game in this regard. i've seen no evidence of his opinion on the gods evolving from "ludinus bad." i feel like he's immediately dismissive any time one of the other party members suggests otherwise.

It's like. I feel like he's so convinced of his own moral righteousness that anyone who disagrees with him is misguided. like so much of his identity within the party is tied to being The Sane One & The Stable One & The Moral Compass, both in the eyes of the other party members & himself, that any dissenting opinion is seen as less important/valid bc he immediately pulls the Ludinus Killed My Family card even when the conversation isn't directly about that, which immediately bullies everyone into shutting up.

i hope it changes, and maybe Dorian seeing Ludinus's point will get to him, bc he's the first person that can counter Orym with "the Gods killed my family." But I also think that speaks to The Problem with Orym, which is that like. he seems to think that having The Most Trauma makes your opinion matter more, and he's always comparing his trauma to the rest of the party, both to his benefit & to his detriment. like IF Dorian is able to get Orym to at least acknowledge the validity of his point of view, I think it's extremely unfair to Orym's other friends that he didn't think their opinions mattered until someone's family died.

idk i just find orym very very frustrating as a character. I think he would've worked well in Vox Machina, but not in this party & not this campaign. Imo he's too morally inflexible for a campaign that focuses on some complex themes. Or I think if one of the other party members was coming from the other end of the spectrum, like Deanna, and had similar trauma surrounding the gods, I think that would have worked well to balance out Orym's rigidity. And hopefully we get that with Dorian I just wish we would have had it all along.

I think Codywan has such a wide appeal and is only growing in popularity (even if they’re still pretty small compared to how huge the whole fanbase is) bc they have a canonical close friendship built on a deep mutual trust so there’s already a foundation for a relationship there (there is the dilemma of ranks but it’s less of an issue imo bc we know Obi Wan isn’t the type to cross anyone’s boundaries like that) but also because it’s simultaneously far enough removed from canon (we see less of them together than other pairings, romantic or otherwise, but still enough that it doesn’t feel forced) that you get quite a lot of creative freedom with them. This works even better when you realise both of them are very reasonable, levelheaded people which explains why so many of the fics about them are just pure fluff or at least hurt/comfort. They provide the best sort of escape from the immediate angst of canon which is why cosy romance really suits them. They’re both also pretty tragic characters and sort of embody the overall tragedy of the entire story in a way so, while angst also works really well, picturing a sadness-free ending for them is always lovely.

Obi Wan’s pain obviously gets more of a focus in canon, what with him being a main character, so it’s so nice to see someone like Cody be able to relieve him of some of it, or at least help him cope. The idea that when you rewatch A New Hope, you could have in the back of your mind that he actually wasn’t alone all that time is just really reassuring to think about.

But also the benefit of seeing so much of Obi Wan is that we know what he’s like as a person really well and so we know he would do exactly the same thing for Cody, hence the real potential for balance in their relationship. I do not think Cody’s pain gets focused on nearly enough in canon (that goes for all of the clones honestly) or in fics, but we can feel safe knowing that if Obi Wan were real, he would be the most accommodating, patient, compassionate person anyone could ever have as their partner or their friend or anything else.

I know I’m just stating the obvious here but there is so comforting about two genuinely kind, good people having a healthy, balanced relationship and that’s why literally no one else compares to them imo. Ik not everyone captures this balances in every fic, but that’s how I view their canon dynamic and how it translates to fanfiction. There doesn’t need to be toxicity because they know how to communicate. They’re definitely both still melodramatic, I mean they are Star Wars characters after all, but it never has to swerve into being unhealthy. They feel like if the feeling of a hug was captured in a ship.

I'm really really good at putting guys in a situation while having absolutely no idea what I want the resolution to their situation to be.

Like. Armel and Marion's whole deal is that they're the single most divorced couple to have never officially dated, and now they're stuck on an otherwise uninhabited scrap of an island together. Also one of them killed the other and the one that got killed is a ghost mermaid monster thing that the ocean granted a second chance at life specifically so he could go violently murderificate his killer before returning to his own death. and theyre stuck on the island bc Armel (ghost mermaid) realized that he can loophole his way into temporary immortality by just like, keeping Marion (the killer) alive.

And that's a situation, thats a Funny situation even because now these two dudes who fuckin Loathe each other are stuck having to kiss up to the other to ensure they don't decide to violently self-destruct and take the other down with them.

But I have no fucking Idea where to go from there or what a satisfying end for them would even be. Bc like. I can make an episodic thing about their time on shit hole island entertaining, but I don't think I could make it satisfying.

Setting the end goal as them leaving the island doesn't work bc that wouldn't fix anything that's actually wrong with them and would be a hollow end for their story.

Setting it as them getting their shit together and working things out doesn't work because that isn't an end point. They're both going to be working on their Issues till the day they die bc dear God are they both broken people.

Them living out their days until Marion's natural death isn't compelling bc of how boring it is, making this a tragedy and letting Marion die young and violently doesn't work bc that means making every bit of growth up to that point pointless.

Finding a way to kill off Armel doesn't work bc Marion isn't a compelling enough character to carry that ending.

letting them break up again has basically the same problem as just killing them It's boring and makes everything pointless. also they're both too possessive of the other to let go like that.

At this point I think I basically need to make them being divorced on shit hole island a secondary plot to something less abstract than the concept of still being in love with your ex who pushed you overboard so he didn't have to share the pirate treasure y'all found. but that's an entirely different can of worms to make work.

ELEKTRA NATCHIOS (MARVEL COMICS)

1.) Elektra was created by the misogynist himself, Frank Miller, who would write female characters like garbage including her. Throughout her entire existence within a majority of Daredevil comics, Elektra has been treated as a character made to be a trophy for Matt Murdock. Daredevil writers love making her life revolve around Matt in a way that its framed as romantic when the reality of their relationship should be framed as a tragedy due to their conflicting ideals (and in my honest opinion, I think she should start hating him).

Frank Miller’s Man Without Fear completely butchers Elektra’s character by changing her character to this “crazy woman with voices in her head who loves to kill anyone and anything” completely shitting on the original backstory of her being a sheltered rich girl who was very kind and sweet until her father’s death that shattered her hopes and dreams, leading her to become vengeful and turn into an assassin who believes that all she’s good at is killing and that she can’t ever live a happy normal life.

And of course thanks to the mcu, that influenced current Daredevil writer Chip Zdarsky, who ruins her character EVEN MORE by trying to follow up on the MWF backstory AND make it align with the mcu version as well to this spy that was sent by the Hand to purposely seduce Matt just like how mcu Stick did in the show. Zdarsky writes Elektra in a way that ruins her character completely and makes her infantalize/belittle Matt by calling him naive and foolish despite in previous incarnations where she UNDERSTANDS why Matt wouldn’t follow in her footsteps and wouldn’t kill and WOULD NEVER TRY TO CONVINCE HIM OTHERWISE (and Zdarsky made her fetishize Matt’s blindness in a way in which she would never do if she was in character). Zdarsky made her stop her ways JUST FOR MATT and then writes Matt to constantly disrespect her and call her a murderer despite in previous iterations where he WOULDN’T DO THAT AND ALSO UNDERSTANDS WHY SHE’S LIKE THIS WITHOUT CHANGING HER. (Zdarsky wrote everyone OOC in his run but the most who suffered from it is def Matt and Elektra). Then Zdarsky made Elektra become Daredevil which yeah, the suit is cool, but the implications of it sucks as Daredevil is not an identity that anyone can pick up on like Spider-Man. Daredevil is explicitly an identity that Matt took up bc of the injustice his father received after his murder along with the desire to protect the victims of the justice system. Elektra is a foil to Matt so her uprising as Elektra wouldn’t align with becoming Daredevil. How he framed it was essentially on par of a woman taking up the husband’s last name but so much worse. Elektra as Daredevil doesn’t work because it completely erases her identity as Elektra and further pushes the idea that she only exists to serve as Matt’s trophy, as his pain, as his wife, as his tragedy, etc etc.

Not a single male Daredevil writer should ever LOOK at Elektra ever again until they know how to write her because she has been done so dirty and receives misogyny on EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF HER EXISTENCE. There’s only been a few times where Elektra’s been done well and a lot of them had Matt be involved very little in it and it really makes you think.

2.) Both show and fandom perperativing the sexist and racist troupe of a dragon lady: overt sexual and physical aggression, untrustworthiness, and mysteriousness. The fandom is notorious for saying Elektra is toxic, instead of recognizes she’s an abuse victim working for her abuser. More often that not, all nuance is thrown out the window

(Comics and show) Killed for Matt’s(Daredevil’s) pain/fridged

3.) Constantly mischaracterized and used as a prop for Matt Murdock/Daredevil, especially in the case of his netflix series and his ongoing comics written by Chip Zdarksy (where she is so intensely out of character she’s almost unrecognizable, and in the case of the current Daredevil run parts of her origin story have even been heavily retconned to more closely resemble her Netflix counterpart which is. Oh my fucking god its infuriating.) But it’s an issue really like half the time she shows up in any given daredevil comic (im being generous)

ABBIE MILLS (SLEEPY HOLLOW) (CW: Racism)

1.) Abbie starts out as one of the two protagonists of the show, only to get almost entirely sidelined as early as season 2, getting less and less screen time and allowed no relationships, either platonic or romantic, while the other lead Ichabod Crane has a seemingly infinite amount of them. It got bad enough that her actor wanted to leave the show, which they did by having her sacrifice her soul in the season 3 finale for the male lead to live, and then they ended the show after season 4 anyway, because guess what, it’s a bad idea to entirely sideline and eventually kill off one of your leads!

2.) She was killed by the narrative to advance her white male co-protagonist’s plotline and I’m still mad about it, Abbie deserved so much better. This is an example of racism in the narrative too and it extended to the production of the show, see news coverage:

3.) Look, I only watched the first season but they killed her off the show SHE was a co lead of!! Misogyny AND racism, all rolled into one. I remember seeing the fan reactions and I was so mad on their behalfs. They wrote her off her own show and from what I recall, gave her less and less screentime leading up to that. The Fodlan games are doing such a bad job at antagonizing Rhea the joke writes itself. I think one of the worst example is how in the Shambala chapter of Nopes Dimitri will say " Yes I agree with you Clout the church is oppressive and mistreating the people but I need to side with it for the sake of the people" like ?? Can KT stop trying to paint Rhea as evil they are doing a terrible job at it and as a result make all the character sound like complete buffon

Nopes is basically using the premise of some early AO3 fanfics, where an uwu golden route is only possible if everyone allies against the Church bcs Church BaD, even if it means Clout and Dimitri have to be A-OK with MAGA.

Dimitro in Zahrofl is just... Ron who became a death eater, I guess, because otherwise, that plot point would never work.

The CoS is oppressive and mistreats people, that's why they're helping his very own people - under his authorisation - let it be the monks and priests from the CoS or the knights of the KoS who are dying to protect Faerghus.

So we have some "they're evil evil evil" told, hammered in 2/3rds of the game - and I'd say even AG is kind of hinting it, because the Kingdom doesn't want to help them because that's the right thing to do, but because they need to help them otherwise some people won't be happy, and etc etc tradition and apparently the CoS is the reason why the Kingdom exists, or something (Loog who?)

But in a way, I find it very interesting, because to get this "Rhea BaD" nonsense that is supposed to glue the plot of both games (even FE16 with the uwu "ReFoRmS" ending with the CoS being reformed, because... Adrestians were acting like asses to Adrestians, i guess), the Fodlan games bank on Rhea not being playable/support-able or even being able to interact with her - save for the worst support of the game -

We have the "baby's first steps" framing from WC where the game makes a spectacular show of framing her as "BaD" and "OmInOuS" for executing people who killed her wards, telling a bunch of third parties that if they point their swords and weapons at her and her people she will flatten them and asking to young people aiming to be military leaders because they enrol in an officer's academy to rekt bandits or to participate in subduing an insurrection that might be led against her, but targets randoms who are "in the way" and was going to bring ruin to a bunch of non fighters.

And it's all for naught, because WC ends on the "twist" that Supreme Leader was the mastermind behind all the terrorist/biological attacks that prompted the CoS to react - and yet, the game is written in a way that you remember the cast being "frightened" by Rhea executing robbers who robbed lives, but not the cast being disgusted and enraged and feeling betrayed by their "uwu classmate" viewing all of their lives as unconsequential and turning innocent people in live weapons, including some students themselves

(or at least being furious at Supreme Leader for abiding and associating with those terrorists who turn fellow classmates in biological weapons)

And then we have all those "the church must be reformed", even with Seteth's own endings - furthering the point that Rhea was BaD, because if she wasn't, why her church needs reformation?

In the end, we have a character who is BaD but Billy cares for her despite her BaDnEsS, so she's redeemable... as long as Billy wants to befriend her.

Meanwhile, "I wanted to walk with u" is framed as a tragedy in the routes where you have to kill her - the player (?) and the cast feel bad for her because of... uh, reasons (uwudeals) and her most ominous actions are swept under Fodlan's rug.

FFS, Leonie is the only character - bar Dimitri who laters learns to "accept" Supreme Leader - who holds a grudge at her for what happened in WC!

Nopes just gave the occasion to the BL - who completely dropped her from the plot even if she was still tackled because "CoS needs ReFoRmS" - to diss her, which makes them look even more ridiculous (or the writing feel even more forced) because she's sitting next to them, giving soup to orphans...

But in Nopes, Faerghus, the Kingdom of very toxic notions like "helping each other in times of need" and "protecting your loved ones and the ones who cannot protect themselves" suddenly decide to throw Rhea and the CoS away because refugees apparently started the war since they didn't want to die, and this war is now brought to their hometurf even if Supreme Leader said she wanted to erase said hometurf to conquer Fodlan :/

Tl;Dr : Rhea BaD bcs she exists, and if you didn't understood that after playing both games, you need to play them again!

VCY as regular people/office workers (still law related bc the AU might not work otherwise) in a parallel universe, going on about their daily, repetitive lives until one day strange headaches, mood swings and unrecognizable flashbacks start appearing and they are getting the sudden feeling of something, someone important that is missing in their life. there has been a glitch in the matrix of sorts and maybe something happened to OG canon VCY, maybe they both died in some terrible tragedy but their souls are too stubborn to move on so they decided to mess around (something along those lines lol).. which causes AU VCY's identities to blur with canon VCY .. and now they have to deal with that.

not sure where the AU would go from there but it feels unhinged and kinda fun and i can't stop thinking about it!

Oooh, that is fun. I kind of love an AU that also /isn't/, in the sense of it being a sort of parallel universe with a glitch that keeps giving them impulses and images and feelings they don't understand and can't follow. The little moments that would ensue, like Vincenzo being suddenly and surprisingly deft with a gun or emotional moments like feelings for one another when the think their friendship is settled and just that, though their souls are in love in a parallel world...

I mean, to be clear, I love this.

♻️ A scrapped idea for your current WIP

one of the biggest changes i made to the plot of without sun really early on was penelope's role in the story. i had a clear idea of the story i wanted to tell as soon as i saw the prompt for the fic. without sun was always supposed to be about more than simon and baz. the story is about grief and love, and the space we take up in the lives of the people around us. but n e way, in my orig draft, penny was actually supposed to be able to communicate with simon a bit, and there was gonna be a whole sect of scenes in the middle of the fic where they sat around together trying to break simon's curse what we know and what we don't know style via passing notes. i ended up tossing this idea really quickly tho, and i'm glad i did bc one of my favourite moments i've ever written in any fic happens in chapter two of without sun and it belongs to simon and penny.

🤔 What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

so many. or, well—what counts as "haven't even started"? i hate to let ideas sit around in my head bc it feels like leaving raspberries in the fridge for too long, like that shit is gonna get mould on it, so usually the first thing i do is rough out a few scenes and/or script out a very rough outline of the plot (like this / this / this style) so that i have something to come back to later. i have dozens of zero drafts just lying tf around. but otherwise, yeah, so many. one big idea i have is called heart on fire and it's based on fanart, but i haven't started it yet bc obvs i wanna get permission from the artist first but i've been holding off reaching out to them about it until i've knocked a few of my less intimidating longfics off my wip list bc heart on fire is gonna fucking hefty so i don't wanna give'r until i'm sure i can manage it.

erin hasn’t read jade legacy yet and i have 700 pages worth of Opinions about it and you can’t put stuff under a cut in tweets so i am finally returning to “posting on tumblr”

this book did not fully work for me! and i am really chewing on why. I enjoyed reading it, and it made me cry several times, but it felt structurally disconnected and didn’t really come together for me like, Thematically. the ending was just kind of eh. points for ending on bero and the twice lucky, because i’m a simple woman i love a good bookend, but it feels really weird that the end was basically like “well, we won bc our family likes each other and the mountain all hates each other” guys your family is a nightmare!!!!!!!! 

on some level I think I had expectations the book ultimately wasn’t interested in fulfilling so I’m not a super fair judge--my called shot for this book was that niko was going to kill hilo for murdering his mom, or that at least that was going to be a major point of contention between them. at a certain point it became obvious this was not the direction we were going in, which is fine, but eyni’s murder was SUCH a great momentous “oh shit” moment in jade war and I feel like we never fully followed up on it--it makes perfect sense that hilo would see it as necessary and like it was the right thing to do, because he’s a freak and he sucks (affectionate), but we barely get to see niko react to it as an adult. like I really thought we were going to get a moment in jade legacy that was like, hey hilo, turns out you cannot just kill your nephew’s mom and kidnap him as a toddler without consequences, but I guess......you can? i feel like we missed out on sooo much meaty crunchy stuff in this vein.

also this should have been at least two or three books. I was excited about the time skips, because I wanted to see the kids as adults, but a lot of specific moments had to get skimmed over to fit everything in, and the kids kind of got the shaft as far as characterization--we get the most interesting character stuff with niko, and he barely has any POV! I liked what we got of Ru (and his death made me cry like a baby), but jaya was cool but completely flat. my mind palace ideal structure is like. one book still centered on the adults while the kids are growing up, and then one book centered on the adult kids where we actually get to dig deep into their character stuff/their relationships with each other. 

anyway, stray thoughts:

making anden and lott narrative foils but then not having them get together honestly kind of a power move. i kind of respect it. my read is that lott is gay but decided he would never be able to be out and be the horn, and stuck to that. which WOULD sure make him feel real weird about anden!

shae/ayt mada real and no one can convince me otherwise. they both tried to kill each other they both saved each other’s lives that is romance baybee

i did really enjoy the continuing bero throughline/his ultimate insignificance, and inability to even MAKE himself significant by confessing to lan’s murder to niko. that scene was so good. 

it feels like all the interesting thematic stuff in this book was coming together in the wake of Ru’s death, and then it all had to get dropped bc we were once again at like, “uh oh mountain’s gonna take over”. like no go back i want to talk more about senseless death and about how vital it is to die for a cause as a green bone but ultimately lan’s death was also a senseless accident and hilo HAS ALWAYS KNOWN THAT AND ALWAYS LIED ABOUT IT AND THAT’S THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE WAR!!! CAN WE TALK ABOUT THAT!!

2 black 2 green made me lose it. 

anyway i AM staring at my hands like is it just that i’m a slut for tragedy and wanted a worse ending to this book where like five major characters died....am EYE the problem for wanting this family to be irrevocably broken...am i too successionpilled.....

In your opinion, were the relationships in nova squadron an interconnected web or more like a pentagon? Like Locarno clearly has enough influence to brow beat all of them into silence but were him and Sito friends per se? Or was sito friends with joshua who was friends with Locarno so they’re always together regardless, and there’s more spokes to the group friendships in that way?

so that’s our starting place but with regard to nick specifically, because he’s the team leader and because it seems more like a coach position than just like a team captain, I don’t think his friendships are on particularly level ground even though he does genuinely care about each of them (which I do think is canon despite everything bc of the way boothby talks about the team dynamic and because he does ultimately take the fall for the rest of them).

I like to write him as being closer friends with josh because that heightens the tragedy and imo works with the themes of nick’s character, but because there is that power dynamic, they’re not necessarily like…..genuinely close friends? like there’s always a little bit of a distance there. I also think it would be fun if nick and jean had a potential fwb-esque dynamic going on. like even if nothing actually happened the potential is there but I also don’t think they’d ever actually Date. wesley and jaxa I think look up to him as a team leader more than they’re mutually friends. for jaxa this is completely in headcanon territory but I actually think her main friendship is with jean until the trial, at which point that completely shatters. during all the trial scenes jean is so completely unshakeable and I could easily see her losing respect for jaxa, who IS so clearly shaken to the point of nearly ruining their case before nick steps in.

I think she and josh are friends but they aren’t best friends EXCEPT in an au where they both survive. this is into my fics territory but I can see them getting a little unhealthily codependent just bc they’ve gone through a lot together.

at the academy I think she and wesley are also friends but I could also see him as coming across as kind of young to her. like canonically she’s presumably at least a year older and in my head it’s about two, but it’s also about the fact that he’s not bajoran yknow? like he’s seen some shit he has literally died before but he didn’t grow up under an occupying force and that’s just fundamentally Different. again in an au where she and josh live I do think jaxa and wesley become closer friends but it’s a dynamic that requires a little more work to become that way.

with jean I think she’s only really close friends with jaxa and then she’s got whatever thing we could decide to throw in with nick. I think it’s always unclear how much she actually likes wesley, and I think she and josh have a mutual respect for each other but wouldn’t be friends under other circumstances. she just strikes me as the type of person who largely holds herself apart, although there’s only so much you can do that on a 5 person team.

for all of them overall i think there's a very specific dynamic created by being on a small college team where like...you don't even have to like each other but you would die for each other. in this case i DO think they generally like each other pre-accident but there’s just a very specific bond you develop when you have to spend one million hours training together that I can’t entirely describe but I feel in my heart that they have it.

Dude it's so over the hyperfixation is overtaking me. Some rambling about how I draw him under the cut bc I can't ever JUST post some art.

First of all I am a hypocrite. So the reason he has top surgery scars is bc I think Aaron being a trans man kicks SO much ass (and I'm eyeing Laurence. Don't test me. I think the themes could go kinda hard. That would be for narrative purposes, which Aaron being trans isn't really.) but the reason he looks kinda older is bc in canon this guy GOT MARRIED AND HAD A CHILD before the events of the show take place and THEN goes through everything with Aphmau so in my brain he's GOTTA look KINDA older. I would accept like, 25 at the youngest, but either way, inheriting a lordship and have your wife + the whole population of your town be fridged WOULD I think put enough stress on you to make you look a bit older. (I'm aware that him being trans could make the process of having his OG kid a bit complicated but I think if amulets exist that make children out of blood, we can look past it and just say that there was pressure to produce an heir just in case something happened).

I also just think he should have a BIT of a goatee. That's because I'm right.

I wanted to draw him Watching from afar because of how much of that he does in the show, and then his expression just sorta started to be angry, and I started to sort of kick around ideas in my head of what he could be watching. Is he seeing Zane come in to officiate that wedding? Is he watching Laurence or Garroth make advances on Aphmau? I'm unsure. I'd love to write something about it but I've gotta work on getting the plot and characters of the OG show nailed down before I start making fic.

I was also thinking and, depending on what I end up doing with Aaron as a character in my rewrite, I might take out the detail of the wife and kid from his past. I guess just because "dead wife and child" feels... almost overdone. I worry about moving around children in the story though, because of how much kids factor in here. I feel like I'd lean towards maybe Aaron having taken someone in-- the wiki says his family dies and he gains lordship at age 17. Maybe he has a SIGNIFICANTLY younger sibling, or a village child that had nowhere else to go, that he's trying his best to raise alongside his new responsibilities. And maybe his ENTIRE village doesn't die at once, maybe Zane makes something big and awful and the village just... falls apart in the wake of the tragedy, leaving Aaron with nothing to rule as the survivors just... move away, one by one. I think whoever Aaron took in would probably definitely have to get killed in the incident, otherwise he'd have 0 reason to have fucked off on a revenge quest.

I mean I cried bc poor Time has been through so much and had so little choice about his role in any of it, and then on top of that he feels like he doesn't deserve companionship :') (plus he's gonna be through MORE WHY did he have to get his eye mutilated HASNT HE BEEN THRU ENOUGH *shakes fist at the sky*) but I did smile when Wind half-teased him abt acting tough and held out his hand to help him up and the four reunited! So I do think it was comforting :D just also sad, and not likely to last bc they have their own individual journeys to get to in the end (though I really hope they'll keep contact!)

But I've also seen some really bitter takes about Time, in the "your past was awful and your future will be filled with its regrets and you can't do anything about any of it, you won't get a happy ending" kind of way, and yours strikes a lot sweeter :) like... "you might be hurt, and lonely, and not certain if you can make this happiness last, but as long as you're with them you can breathe easier, and the memory will carry you through the hard times." If that makes sense? In general you just set the atmosphere and emotions really well! I felt like I was right there with the Links, deeply worried with no way to show it and nothing but dark thoughts for company as Wind waits for Time to wake up, or sitting by the fire and watching it crackle, listening to Time and Wind's quiet conversation, the silence of the night creating the illusion of being the only ones awake in a sleeping world...

You've single-handedly made me love Wind and this possible relationship of his with Time so I dare say you're utilizing him very well!! And yeah you really get that feeling across, that he's very worried about Time but doesn't want to overstep because he gets that Time is more than capable and doesn't want him to think he's implying otherwise... like all the help he offers is strictly of the practical kind and only just hints about feelings, to make sure Time knows he can reach out any time he wants :D That multi-layered "let me help"... It's really sweet. And ooh I really love those headcanons! The elegy of emptiness and Link being the last one who needs to heal is so lovely and so in line with his character :D

This got overlong again so hopefully you weren't joking about the asks XD and a blog about your thoughts on the kid quartet would be awesome! Yeah comics take so long and so much work to make, but honestly I'd just love to hear about how you write their characters in whatever way is easiest for you :) though the way you have of showing-not-telling with the comics is truly breathtaking! Also it's rlly funny to imagine them growing up into LU and Wind suddenly going from eldest to youngest lol, I keep getting the mental image of him still trying to big-brother them while being like half their size XD

Ah, that makes more sense… yes the hero of time indeed is a really tragic character. It's an aspect i really like drawing about him!!!!!!!! I guess it's one reason all my stand-alone pieces of him are mostly somber…..

Wind probably called him out on it directly as i feel like he's probably tried to pull the "strong guy" persona at least once during his adventures, so he gets to be cheeky about it hahaha I like the idea that they keep contact, but i really doubt it…. though they won't mind much! Even if they're apart they know they're all going to take care of themselves, and have fond memories to keep them company, like you said! (Ignoring that i hc that two of these links die early in their lives….. but that's not really relevant at the moment, ha ha…..)

I'm glad you like my specific interpretation of time! I always want to follow zelda's wacky horror, where in the games there's both tragedy and happiness, so i hoped the same went for all of these characters (even if i also understand some of the more bitter interpretations of Time, I get seeing him be vengeful... but maybe that's because I felt the need to be bitter about it in his stead lololol)- im quite happy you felt so immersed! and the more wind fans the merrier, he deserves them and i really dont mind people sending asks like these, i love talking and hearing about this topic, i have a lot to say….!!!! and i really agree with what you say here, it makes me super happy ♪

starting with how i feel about her. i feel things so many things i love her so deeply so very deeply and i end up going insane about her a lot. there's just so much potential for tragedy without even taking into account the actual tragic fate of canon and that makes me insane. also just sibling. she's a younger sibling and not enough people explore her and petunia so i will take it upon myself to do just that !!!

people i ship lily with: (in no particular order and with more detail than necessary)

dorcas - dorlily will always be tragic to me idc if they are happy eventually it's always tragic

regulus - if i think too much about regulily i might explode :/ they are just like tragic again but also perfect in every way that makes no sense at all they don't intentionally fall in love ever it just happens by accident and then one day they're in love and no one saw it coming and just !!! also the younger sibling with a strained relationship with the older sibling thing .... why are more people not insane about that more people should be losing their minds with me

james - a classic! teenage love that's sweet and they just work. like james loves the way he loves and lily deserves that kind of love!! not as insane about these two but like they're always going to be good

mary - slowly have been falling out with marylily but i do still like them. even more fun if its unrequited on either end but great still as friends to lovers or just being sweet! when its requited there isn't as much angst which is usually what draws me to ships even more but like still fun

pandora - also not top of the list but still good! they're insane together and bring out the worst in each other (positive) and just very fun!

non romantic otp.... this is hard it really depends on the situation... bc like remus is right there and they deserve to be best friends and have an unspoken language together and be someone the other confides in. but then there is also platonic regulily which also drives me insane. and then lily and sirius are best friends you cannot tell me otherwise and the deserve that! like also back to siblings sirius and lily finding each other and helping to heal part of them with loving each other for the sibling that cant or won't and it's :( i love them

unpopular opinion on lily.... obvious answer is regulily but im not gonna talk about ships in this but im gonna go with idk if its unpopular but i feel like i dont see it that often but i feel like lily is kind of a bitch (again, positive) like if you take canon yeah she's a mom and thats the only trait she gets which is stupid. she's not soft at all unless you are one of her people and then she will adore you forever and ever and treat you like a princess but to anyone else especially anyone that is rude to her or her people she can and will kill them

one thing i wish would have happened to lily in canon - okay like i was just saying she should have more of a personality, but that aside and just considering a canon setting... she should have been the one to pick the secret keeper. like yeah all of them would have been in consideration including sirius and peter but lily would have been better at picking like clearly no one was thinking who are lily's friends that would be able to do this it was always just oh james! his best friend (also lily's bff but i digress) and then oh no not james' best friend let's go with his other friend! like cmon lily would have been smarter than to pick one of the three people closest to them that everyone knows is close to them :/ also she should have lived that would have been cool of her to also survive a killing curse

22. Are there certain types of writing you won’t do? (style, pov, genre, tropes, etc)

I will never write a long-form tragedy. Can't do it. It would get inside my head and eat me alive.

Other than that . . . I have fewer hard rules and more preferences. I have my niche but I'm open to a lot of things if I find the right story for it. Like, I'm 99% a genfic writer and have very minimal interest in shipfic but one of these days I am gonna make Reigen Arataka smooch that ghost. There's a lot of horror content and tropes that I won't touch (though I can write more than I can read), but obviously Brassica Heresy is a horror fic. I don't care about smut but there is (theoretically) a fic I'm working on that has a sex scene because it's necessary for exploring the character's ace identity, something I do care about. So like . . . a lot of writing really comes down to the execution, and how the story element is being utilized in that particular piece of writing. I'm not necessarily going to throw any style or genre off the table entirely, even if it's not a tool I think I'm likely to use.

Every version of "Think Critically About Your Writing" that spirals around to "You have to actively refute every possible bad-faith reading of your story in the text itself or you are a Bad Person who writes Problematic Things for Bad People" :/

29. What’s your revision or editing process like?

I do split-screen, with my Shitty First Draft on the left side of the screen and a shiny new blank document on the other, and then I completely rewrite the thing and edit as I go. Sometimes big chunks of the Shitty First Draft are actually very good and I retype them with only minor changes, but a lot of the time I end up adding and reworking huge parts of the fic. If I've been very cursed or ended up having to do first-draft-style writing for whole scenes or otherwise feel super unsatisfied with what I've written as Draft Two I sleep on it and if I still feel bad I copy the new version over the old draft and rewrite it again. But I can't rewrite more than twice; then I know I'll just start overthinking. And if I'm doing it more than once I need to pinpoint exactly what about the previous version wasn't working, as opposed to the first draft which I mostly treat like a helpful scaffolding. Once I have a draft I mostly like I read over it again for flow and diction and make any minor tweaks it needs. And then depending on how cursed I am I either post it or throw it at a friend while wailing bc I'm too tired to tell if it's any good or not. Usually it is Fine. I have not learned from this.

58. What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most? (Brainstorming, outlining, writing, editing, etc) 

The best best best part of writing stories is when you've been wrestling with a thorny little plot or character problem for days and Suddenly the solution descends on you as if from the heavens and you feel absolutely intoxicated with power as you think about how this is going to make all the little bits and pieces you've been worrying about Work!

The second-best part is editing when you get to fine-tune the Foreshadowing and the Iconography :)

Elektra Natchios (Marvel Comics)

1.) Elektra was created by the misogynist himself, Frank Miller, who would write female characters like garbage including her. Throughout her entire existence within a majority of Daredevil comics, Elektra has been treated as a character made to be a trophy for Matt Murdock. Daredevil writers love making her life revolve around Matt in a way that its framed as romantic when the reality of their relationship should be framed as a tragedy due to their conflicting ideals (and in my honest opinion, I think she should start hating him).

Frank Miller's Man Without Fear completely butchers Elektra's character by changing her character to this "crazy woman with voices in her head who loves to kill anyone and anything" completely shitting on the original backstory of her being a sheltered rich girl who was very kind and sweet until her father's death that shattered her hopes and dreams, leading her to become vengeful and turn into an assassin who believes that all she's good at is killing and that she can't ever live a happy normal life.

And of course thanks to the mcu, that influenced current Daredevil writer Chip Zdarsky, who ruins her character EVEN MORE by trying to follow up on the MWF backstory AND make it align with the mcu version as well to this spy that was sent by the Hand to purposely seduce Matt just like how mcu Stick did in the show. Zdarsky writes Elektra in a way that ruins her character completely and makes her infantalize/belittle Matt by calling him naive and foolish despite in previous incarnations where she UNDERSTANDS why Matt wouldn't follow in her footsteps and wouldn't kill and WOULD NEVER TRY TO CONVINCE HIM OTHERWISE (and Zdarsky made her fetishize Matt's blindness in a way in which she would never do if she was in character). Zdarsky made her stop her ways JUST FOR MATT and then writes Matt to constantly disrespect her and call her a murderer despite in previous iterations where he WOULDN'T DO THAT AND ALSO UNDERSTANDS WHY SHE'S LIKE THIS WITHOUT CHANGING HER. (Zdarsky wrote everyone OOC in his run but the most who suffered from it is def Matt and Elektra). Then Zdarsky made Elektra become Daredevil which yeah, the suit is cool, but the implications of it sucks as Daredevil is not an identity that anyone can pick up on like Spider-Man. Daredevil is explicitly an identity that Matt took up bc of the injustice his father received after his murder along with the desire to protect the victims of the justice system. Elektra is a foil to Matt so her uprising as Elektra wouldn't align with becoming Daredevil. How he framed it was essentially on par of a woman taking up the husband's last name but so much worse. Elektra as Daredevil doesn't work because it completely erases her identity as Elektra and further pushes the idea that she only exists to serve as Matt's trophy, as his pain, as his wife, as his tragedy, etc etc.

Not a single male Daredevil writer should ever LOOK at Elektra ever again until they know how to write her because she has been done so dirty and receives misogyny on EVERY SINGLE ASPECT OF HER EXISTENCE. There's only been a few times where Elektra's been done well and a lot of them had Matt be involved very little in it and it really makes you think.

2.) Both show and fandom perperativing the sexist and racist troupe of a dragon lady: overt sexual and physical aggression, untrustworthiness, and mysteriousness. The fandom is notorious for saying Elektra is toxic, instead of recognizes she's an abuse victim working for her abuser. More often that not, all nuance is thrown out the window

Constantly mischaracterized and used as a prop for Matt Murdock/Daredevil, especially in the case of his netflix series and his ongoing comics written by Chip Zdarksy (where she is so intensely out of character she's almost unrecognizable, and in the case of the current Daredevil run parts of her origin story have even been heavily retconned to more closely resemble her Netflix counterpart which is. Oh my fucking god its infuriating.) But it's an issue really like half the time she shows up in any given daredevil comic (im being generous)

1.) This continues over to her mcu version in the netflix show where the writers decide to be extremely racist and make her the dragon lady stereotype while also following the Man Without Fear version to which many dd comics fan fucking hate. The show paints her as someone who was born evil with this Black Sky bullshit and makes her a puppet for the Hand and then kills her off just to be white man angst for Matt (comics have done this too but the netflix show takes this idea to such a degree that its horrible). Thanks to the netflix show, many fans believe that Elektra is this murderous bloodthirsty woman who is abusive to Matt and a manipulator so now Elektra faces misogyny and racism from fandom.

25. Have you ever upset yourself with your own writing?

yes. many times. writing process typically swings between getting really emo about the characters and going full sickos mode about it all. things that I would call upsetting would probably be all of I speak as one about to die. mmm tragedy. and the torture scenes in NO SAFE PLACE. especially the part about Lazar. Um. Crumbling like a wet cookie? turns out writing torture deals psychic damage to me, who knew. other fics have been sad for me and lived in my brain for a while but i would not call them upsetting on the same level.

12. Do you have a playlist for your current WIP(s)? Share it!

I don't have playlists for my current WIPs. I haven't really gotten into the habit, though I totally should, but usually my character/relationship playlists serve the same function. Anyways I did make one for the cquackity / karlnapity & cdream slasher wedding fic that is currently. not being worked on at all. it is. entirely made up of songs from Bleed Out and MCR songs.

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

I use a lot of song lyrics! A lot of mountain goats lyrics. 13 out of my 32 works use tmg lyrics for titles. I look for songs that I feel like match the vibe or theme of the fic. The Mountain Goats have many songs with many themes. Otherwise I like using lines from the source text, if the fic in question was inspired by or was an au of something. Silver Dollar is from Arguing with the Ghost of Peter Laughner About His Coney Island Baby Review by TMG. because like. Dead guy. Elegy. gestures vaguely. put on your chairman mao coat because it pleases me to have that as a title and because commandante can be about dream and sapnap actually, if you look at it from the angle i'm standing at. Harlem Roulette can be about fundy and q, etc etc.

Everything Now As Day is a line from the Menelaiad by John Barth and WE ALL THINK YOU'RE A GRAND GIRL is a line from Antigonick by Anne Carson. I speak as one about to die is from Anne Carson's translation of Agamemnon. Kassandra says it :) you don't have to love it is a line from CM Punk's snake promo. left pining for transience is a line from the deeply wonderful Fiona Lu's poem Turing Test. dawn and mourning dove grey and turning from the plow are both lines from a song from the webcomic Sword Interval by Ben Fleuter, since both those fics exist in the SI au. The chapter titles for dawn and mourning dove grey are the names of the entries in the apocalypse log that reveals the circumstances of the worldbuilding and sets the stage for the final arc of the webcomic.

Titles that aren't direct references to something are still made with consideration to the fic itself. sometimes a fic is big enough 2 warrant a very simple and encompassing title as The Death Poem. The fox who traveled to the end of the world is called that bc I was trying very hard to emulate the style of the fairy tales and fables I read growing up, and those are like. Decently straightforward and referring 2 fundy as a fox emphasizes his trickster-ness. NO SAFE PLACE and BED [DIS]ASSEMBLY are like that because i appreciate all caps quite a lot, maybe an ill-advised amount. also sometimes its just the vibes. the vibes call for all caps.

before we cut to Alexandria is. hm. Well I can't recall atm the exact leaps in my thought process but the general gist is that it's a study of a very specific and liminal period of cabinetduo's relationship, set between the larger and Historical events of the election and the red festival and nov16, and Alexandria is this big important city and it's also a place that gets kind of famously destroyed a little but this isn't yet about Alexandria/L'Manberg. The poem doesn't even leave the White House. I also know it was inspired somehow by tmg's album Songs for Pierre Chuvin.

Journeying Into the Center of the Earth To Retrieve Your Dead Ex Boyfriend because that is what the fic is about and though it is not an instruction manual it is still a detailing of a process. and also because the concept was inspired by Carmen Maria Machado's Help Me Follow My Sister Into the Land of the Dead
