how do you get your colors to look so nice and your lineart so red and vibrant? i love it

I always sketch in neon colors it's a habit i picked up from an old teacher but I'll think of a color usually on a whim and draw with that. and then if i want to draw something else ill pick another color that i think goes well with the page. usually most of my color schemes r analogous (colors right next to each other on the wheel)

yanked this from recent dunmesh post; i kept most of my colors within the pink/red/orange range.

i wouldn't recommend doing everything in monochrome or analogous palettes though because it's sort of a guilty crutch of mine XD.

sometimes when im coloring ill change the layer mode of the sketch. color burn gets you either very very bright or very very deep colors depending on the color of the flats underneath. multiply and linear burn do the same thing but they're a lot tamer and generally always return darker colors. im sure there's some technical bits behind this though. ill either color my lineart afterward to compliment the color of the flats, leave it as is, or mess with layer modes if i feel like it. my favorite trick is color burn + linear burn + some combination of two lineart layers and just fiddling until i get a nice burn effect.

coloring... like 999% of this is relative color which is like. kind of the idea that colors look different when placed next to each other. if you eyeball it a bit it's pretty noticeable.

what i used to do a bit ago was i would fill in the area i wanted to color with one big mask of color, make a new layer that has a clipping mask down to the flat layer of color, and then draw my actual flat colors. the color of the mask helped me pick my flat colors bc if I picked a color i think stood out too much next to the mask i could kind of just adjust it until it looked a little more cohesive.

old ish drawing next 2 a canon reference. i ignore local color a lot...mea culpa....but my overall color palette here was a light pink, so the shirt here is actually a desaturated pink? or violet i believe. if you shift sort of that purple color far enough into the gray area of your color wheel it can take on a blueish or even greenish hue. it being next to a lot of warm pinks/fuschias helps.

a neat thing that kind of helps is that if you desaturate or saturate certain colors they can kind of take on a certain hue? not sure if this makes sense. sort of how orange here turns tealish blue the grayer it gets. so if im drawing something that's predominantly orange and i have a blue color i can just take an orange color and desaturate it until i get a color that sort of looks like blue. and that way it kind of looks more harmonious? at least to me XD

shading. i don't apply serious lighting to a lot of my drawings, but a helpful bit is that the shadows tend to be the opposite of whatever color the lighting is? i try to think first about the "mood" or the main color i want to go for in the drawing and then i pick a shadow color opposite of that. so for here, i wanted the lighting to be a coolish magenta so the shadows r lime green. if there's anything off i fiddle around until i get something i like. the shadows on the skin here were too green initially so i shifted them a little more orange.

there's a "band" of color going on between the transition of the shadows to the light. generally this could be for a lot of reasons and i tend to use it differently (core shadow? overexposure? etc etc). but this is a color post so ill try not to go too off track.

but generally digital doesn't "mix" colors the same way traditional colors do if you use RGB (cmyk is a bit better with this but is kind of a pain to get used to), so to make blending a little less muddy, i sometimes add an intermediate color to smooth things out a little. for example, mixing digitally blue n yellow tends to get you gray, but generally, blue + yellow makes green, so if im making a blue->yellow transition ill slap some green color in the middle so it flows a little better.

I do a lot more cel shading nowadays. if you've been on here for a while earlier this year i have another style of coloring but it's not really accurate to how shadows really work so i wouldn't recommend looking at it. it's mostly to add zest and texture to the underlying flat colors.

coloring your lineart does a TON to helping your colors look vibrant, though its like the garnish on a dish to me (same with shadows). i think it's good to try and play with your flat colors and try to make sure those look in order first before adding flourishes. usually ill leave it a dark, saturated color that again matches my overall palette but sometimes i go in and color them by alpha locking my lineart layer and picking a color that matches the flat colors underneath? not sure how to explain it properly.

i used a darkish purple for shuro's ponytail to match the dull red of the flat colors (more relative color! trying to simulate a black/brown while keeping the pink palette there) but a lighter crimson for laios's blond. the light was this super intense like blush pink so i thought it might be cool to add this neon salmon red in the areas of that light to really give off that vibe of a very bright intense rim light.

sometimes you could also tweak with gradient maps or color balance, which adjusts hue based on how light or dark a color is. these r fun to mess with as a final touch but i need to watch using them because they can become crutches real fast XD but those are also just tools to help you. in the end just developing a good sense of how color works and how you want to use it is the best place to start.

LONGASS ramble but yeah. tldr just kind of train ur eye for color and look at what you like best. which is unhelpful and a little sucky but it really is just observation and practice and maybe some personal zest.

i LOVE writing her dialogue LMAOO. her whole gimmick is that she acts wayyyyy older than she actually is, and when i say that i mean she truly acts like an old man. she is a very slow talker a mover and figuring out how to write for her has been lots and lots of fun !!!!

she uses a lot of ellipses... and always drags on a sentence if it is possible. she never uses exclamation points if she can help it... because she tries not to raise her voice... and typically doesn't get excited or emotive about many things. she trails off a lot, either on a tangent about a sailing story or simply because she has lost focus... and includes a quote from her afi or from a writer that can shed wisdom on the situation. everything is a lesson to be learned, you see... she also tends to repeat herself at the end of the sentence, she does. it's either "you see" or some variation of "i do/i am", depending on what was said... and of course she always refers to her boats and the ocean using she/her. laughs like an old man too, eheheh... always keeps the mood light

but, uh, when she gets flustered she uses "um" and "uh" a lot. especially when backed into a corner. sounds a lot less wise. her sentences get shorter when she's upset. real short. she tends-- you see, she tends to stutter a lot more when she is stressed, or in a tense mood. corrects herself, or-- sometimes, she cuts herself off before she says anything too harsh. her tone grows a lot more "childish", and she wants to sound like she knows what she is doing. won't raise her tone. just gets rather blunt with you.

unless she gets very irritated. because then she starts to emphasize certain words to you in an almost condescending manner, and-- and she still might stutter over her words because she is thinking less about them, but they are all flowing out of her mouth at this point. and if you push her too far she'll start yelling! exclamation point! it is rare to get an exclamation point from her! if you push her hard enough she'll scream! she'll fucking yell!!

SOOOOOOOOO sae as of right now is being used in a killing game rp which means i get to write for her pretty oftennnnn :) she gets to hang out with a whole cast of awesome characters that are both amazing and stressing her out so badly. as hell. it is chapter 2 currently (we're at the motive!!) and literally every single thing is going wrong (the motive concerns her family and of course her afi was threatened bc thats all shes got, her plan to escape failed miserably and shes starting to resent people with very little reason, somebody in the killing game knows JUST WHAT TO SAY to seriously push her buttons) but she'll persevere 😍 she'll persevere and get so much worse

i loveee the rp server bc the people there love to write fics and draw art of their own AND each others characters and i eat it up every single time. me included i love creating for these rps :) which MEANS i actually do draw and write for her a bit often!! now a lot of it is practice and/or doesn't get sent to the server lmfaooo i think the last fic i wrote for her (and finished-- i keep starting things and stopping 😔) was a backstory fic for her about that one bad memory i mentioned in the last ask :) a single person has read it and that is the person running the rp in the first place ghfdjkg

okay so this is super self indulgent but preface for those who arent aware i have this whole full world for my ocs & basically its like a 50/50 chance for any given person to have psychic powers called abilities & this ability is entirely dependent on the person themself & has nothing to do with genetics. ur either born with them or u can get them if ur from a different world & are isekai'd in. the only real thing about abilities is it has to be something a person can do with their mind/state of mind & isnt just like some super power like super strength.

anyway i realized this week i feel like i know the isotopes well enough so i ended up spending a lot of time thinking of what abilities they would have and i give u all my final decisions!!!

Kafu: she has something im going to call window creation. basically the ability to call forth 'windows' which ranges from just invisible walls in the air to creating a pane that lets her (or anyone near by to see it) see into a different place, time, or both. these are in effect solid walls/windows so its theoretically possible to use them as a weapon but given how kafu is i doubt she would think that way & instead would take a more defensive route, using them as a sort of force field or to get info the group otherwise wouldn't know

Sekai: i'm calling hers shadow manipulation. she can take control of shadows in the area and turn them into a semi-physical thing & from there pretty much becomes a distance attacker or defender depending on both her mood & what's necessary. i would like to think she also keeps a little shadow as a pet & it just follows her around or sits on her shoulder. the shadows can change shape btw

Rime: pyromancy. she gets to create & control fire at will. i like to think she puts too much pressure on herself to learn it & ends up unable to do it at first because of that but the second she lets herself breathe she finally gets it & from there puts in so much practice that her style with it ends up absolutely beautiful to watch. default flame color is red bc thats her color but it changes color/temperature with her emotions. u threaten one of the others and watch how fast it ends up blue-white.

Coko: fox. by shifting her mental state she can transform into a fox & while in that form can do things like create wil o wisp/fox fire & force fields, but mostly i think she'd specialize in creating illusions. she probably actually has multiple tails in that form but after drawing the rest of her outfit i thought one was enough to get the idea across. yes this is the third time im giving a chara this ability its bc im not allergic to fun normally people cant talk in the fox form but i like her so i guess she gets a little telepathy as a treat too.

Haru: consciousness walking. that is, she can separate her consciousness from her physical body & move around almost like a ghost. she can interact with the physical world on a minimal level in this state, but more importantly it allows her to see & interact with other people's consciousnesses in a way that's very easy to mess with their perception of the world & throw off their judgment & things like that. kind of like astral projection but not really, also if she gets really skilled with it she'd be able to move both her physical & spiritual forms at once although that is very tiring

Experience in RP — I've been rping since I was a kid back in forever ago before I even really knew what rping was. It all started on a chat site and I wasn't sure what was going on but I liked it LMFAO. I think it was probably about middle school-ish time for me. 6th grade I guess??? So a while.

Best experiences — AAAAA many! I think some of my best experiences rping was when I was doing things with my friends on Twitter and Deviantart. They always inspired me to draw and we were constantly designing characters / joining art rp groups back then which helped me improve drastically. Ughugh I miss doing things like that sometimes.

Pet peeves / dealbreakers — Godmodding. The quickest way to make me drop a thread is making Ozy do something or saying he did something without consulting with me. That's a pretty big dealbreaker for me as I've been put in really uncomfortable situations as a result of people doing this. Also instantly coming at me with ship ideas is a bit of a put off if we like...have literally done one thing / I barely even know you. I had that happen day one of me making Ozy and it almost made me want to leave before I even did anything. Only time I will shake you around and be like, "yeah let's gooooo!" is if we've known one another a long time / I'm comfortable enough to do that.

Muse preference ( fluff, angst, smut ) — That depends. I love writing things where it's deeply discussion based over beliefs, philosophies, and the like. Emotionally charged threads too since that gets my muse really going, but it doesn't need to quite be angst so IDK AAAAAA. Fluff is okay sometimes, although Ozy isn't exactly 'fluffy' most of the time and it's a 50/50 with him and his fickle moods. Smut is nice to write every now and then too because there can be a lot of characterization in intimate moments like this. I don't think I have any kind of definite preference when I think about it -rubs chin-

Plot or memes — Memes usually (or just throwing unprompted stuff in my inbox)! My attention span is absolutely terrible. I like plotting but I have a tendency to slowly lose interest if it goes on for a while as I like getting the barebones as to what we're going to do, have some discussion, then jumping straight into making a thread. Discussing things as we go along and have things already started is just more fascinating for me.

Long or short replies — I loooove long replies, but those tend to be done at a slower pace unless the muse is really gripping me by the throat. I remember the days when I wasn't working and I could get through like ten threads a day or something but thinking about that now has me like, "how did I even do this?" So a nice mixture of short and long is nice! That way I can pick and choose what I feel like replying to that day.

personality: to start off, i’m very introverted (ITSP). i need a lot of alone time to recharge, but i can manage to be around people even when im drained if i like them enough 😭

i’m very understanding, and i’m VERY empathetic. i can empathise with pretty much everybody and i’m great at giving advice, or even just listening to people’s struggles if that’s what they want. but i can also be extremely blunt and honest at times since i really hate lying & sugarcoating things.

How you met: Civilian As you sat in the relief of the cool fan breeze on your face, you re-wrapped your hand with your light blue handwrap. In recent months, you started to train in the ring more often and you loved the gym you found. The air smelled of sweat and the sound of grunts and punches filled the room but it satisfied your competitive spirit. "Aia, you're up!" your trainer called and you walked to the ring to find your opponent. While he was taller and more muscular than you, his kind smile made you feel a little bad for the ass beating you were about to deliver. You had see him around before but this was the first time you would have a session with him. "Kyle," he said as he approached you and gently shook your hand. "Aia," you exchanged and soon took your stance. It was clear when you started that Kyle was a pressure fighter, bombarding you with a barrage of attacks then retreating out of your reach. While his goal was to exhaust you, you were an out-boxer and focused on anticipating his attacks and returning them with a long range punch. Most out-boxers were taller than you but you were able to methodically plan your attacks and kept Kyle on the offensive. You danced around the ring, making intense eye contact with his dark brown eyes until you finally managed to land a winning punch to his sternum. As he fell, you stood above him in victory. "Good match," you complimented as you held out a hand and helped him up. "That was one hell of a punch," he said as he massaged his chest, "I definitely have to train with you more." "Looking forward to it," you replied and exchanged numbers with your new gym buddy.

A peek into your relationship: When you weren't going to the gym with your boyfriend, you enjoyed a nice night in with a cookbook and drinks. Tonight, you and Kyle were attempting to make creamy garlic chicken pasta, a recipe he had suggested. You danced around the kitchen as Kyle took care of the chicken and you handled the pasta. "Babe, this is a great chicken," you said as you peeked a head around his torso, "some might call it im-peck-able!" Your corny joke was met by a hearty laugh from him as you kissed his cheek. "That was bad," he replied and you rolled your eyes as you finished draining the pasta. "I'm just eggs-centric," you said with a smile and this one was met with groans. As Kyle tossed the pasta, he kept poking fun at your humor. What I liked was, of course, Jon’s awesome self being awesome. I also liked that finally, Jordan & Sarah’s mental health issues were acknowledged again. As someone who (1) has depression, and (2) has experience in helping a sibling during their panic attacks, the portrayals for these weren’t terrible! On that whole, getting a job to combat one’s depression, it could go either way depending on if the work isn’t suited to Sarah and/or what she needs from it, but it is true (ime) that ‘useful distractions’ can help - empty distractions, like just watching whatever is on TV or something equally as unengaging, are more likely to worsen things. Having a reason to push yourself out of bed that you don’t hate, especially if it’s something that you could work with your brain to latch onto - like, for Kyle, he cares a lot for his people, so as he said, reminding himself that what he was doing was for them, helped him do what he needed to each day - can be vital.

Sometimes, all I’d get out of bed for, when I woke up in the early-hours after not getting any sleep yet again, for another awful day of school and other terrible things, was making breakfast for the other kids, because I knew they wouldn’t have time to eat otherwise. To that point, I could then push myself to also eat. It was like picking up breadcrumbs, so very tedious and possibly pointless, but, if I focused on the task and found a way to tell myself it was for someone else or the like, it was easier to pick one up, then one after it.

(I imagine this is what Jon does, btw.)

Not to quote a depression commercial, but: a body in motion, tends to stay in motion, while a body in ‘rest,’ tends to stay as such.

Anyway. I have panic attacks, too, but mine are the ‘silent’ type (it’s the trauma. Or the caregiving-sibling thing? Whatever), so for Jordan’s anxiety portrayal in this episode, I had to draw on my experience in Jon’s spot. I think the dialogue was actually terrible, so that sucked (that NEVER helped my sibling to calm down, BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T, IT DOESN’T WORK LIKE THAT, if they’re panicking, you can’t just say ‘calm down,’ ffs). But Garfin did great and so did Bishop; Jordan was self-soothing AND not lashing out, which I appreciated seeing. Jon kept a calm and steady presence and voice, which was also appreciated. I still immediately had several ideas of how the dialogue SHOULD have gone, as I was watching, but, it’s S&L.

Overall: I was still disappointed in the ep., I imagine that’s not going away, but at least we got to return to Jor, Jon & Sarah dealing with mental illness. And no ableist curing!

hi! sorry this took me so long to get to-i woke up late and then had to be at work for the rest of the day; also funny note-i was JUST thinking about someone asking me how i draw bodies-idk that's funny to me-so idk how exactly to do this-so um-good luck to me i guess

HERE WE GO

so! i usually start-with the head! and depending on who I'm drawing (or what kinda drawing mood I'm in), i either use a circle, a rectangle, or some sort of mix

i'll be using the rectangle for this demo-and you would think (okay so you draw the neck-next, right?) nope! straight to the shoulders/upper torso! and usually this "square", for me, means the chest area-so there will be muscle just behind it

then i usually go for the waist/lower torso, but sometimes-i go straight for the arms

from there, i mostly doodle until i find placements for my arms and legs

and then from there-its just refining and refining until i find something that feels correct to me.

I did use to use that-stick figure guide thing-but i found that to not work for me as well as it used to, so it turned to-using shapes of the body instead, like how the torso area/shoulders look like this

and the better you understand anatomy, the easier the shapes are to see and make out, and then you can just-do this

honestly-i really dont know how to explain HOW i draw bodies? i guess i use shapes and the good ol stick figure guide but like-made it more me?? idk

my way of drawing bodies really comes from me tracing over references and learning the shapes-the curves, the natural points and distance-between it all, and soon enough I'm really able to just-scribble till i get a pretty anatomically correct pose/body. do not be afraid to trace over the reference, it will help in the long run-because it trains your brain/hand to recognize-oh-this is how this goes and this is how this sits-its not cheating-its learning/memorizing/practicing. i still have a lot of practice to do with bodies, for instance-im horrid at drawing the backside of like-anything-my head anatomy really needs work-and so many other things, but I've gotten really good at dynamic poses-while my straightforward ones are shoddy and need a lot of work. i still need a lot of work drawing different body types-such as my own-but hey-im working on it. hope this helped or this was entertaining at all? idk lol

all of my Polka redesigns! (polka is a character i made) from around 2014 to today

her name is polka but it was at various points pola, apollene, apollo. a couple characters also merge into her, i will tell you when.

i didnt date my drawings so every date will be an estimate but they will definetaly be in order bc i know how my style evolved. this is all the art i kept, i threw alot out.

i wrote more and then tumblr deleted it hh but tldr all my old characters are super personal self inserts and this one is my adhd before i was diagnosed

heres the first pola! that was in 1 or 2 year of middleschool. she was loosely based on my friend pola from summer camp and spiced up with the fun bubbly character archetype (example pinkiepie from my little pony) she cant stop herself from being energetic and over the top, she will either cheer you up or annoy you. she is kind of lighthearted at this stage and lacks the later bitchiness, all the problems she causes are not on purpouse. in this drawing (if you cant tell.. i dont blame you) she is hanging from the ceilling and thats why everyone else is upside down

i used to glue all my good drawings into a sketchbook. these are all from middleschool still. bottom left is marceline, based on a goth girl by the same name whom i met at the hospital. one thing about my irl friend is she would cling to the popular older kids bc more freedom and privilleges

now heres a whole page of temmie, a travelling salesman i really didnt want to admit was based on temmie undertale. thats late middleschool. what is she doing here? by the time we reach highschool there will be no temmie because i thought it was too unoriginal, but all the character traits and some design elements (notably utility vest) will be merged into polka and become half of her.

this is a highschool drawing where polka splits into 2 again. the one who keeps the name polka is the short one in front and her character is the same, however from her old design only a bandana and blouse remain. the other polka-esque character on the left is fairly unimportant and merges back in about 2 years.

this one is from today! she will keep evolving tho. right now shes a wolf(?) instead of a cat(?) short hair seems to suit her more because she wouldnt care for her long hair and keep it healthy but she still wants to be pretty and cool. how cartoony she is and what nose she has depends on what shes in, if i decided to make a super serious comic i would give her a human nose. one thing im not sure about is the colors, i think green is a realistic color for a vest like that if she got it used or found it in her dads closet (she did for sure) but green is not a very energetic color so i also liked when the vest was yellow and the sleeves red. Red is the color of her personality. when i stopped wearing pins i stopped giving her pins, and i stopped bc they make noise and annoy me so they would annoy her too and reduce her cat/wolf stealth (but im concidering giving her patches for that pop of colour. probably 4-5 on the back and 1-2 on the front above the pockets). Polka is a thrill seeker, energetic, an anarchist, and a bit of a hedonist. she will always cheat if she can, and she doesnt always recognise other peoples needs, but she tries to keep the people around her in a good mood and is always a social butterfly until bad rumours inevitably spread about her (i dont see her as a bad person though, shes just like that and theres little to do about it besides damage control)

Question I’ve been asking myself lately—from one struggling bipolar to the next

this is a good one bc it really is hard to tell sometimes 😭 i feel like ive been having mental health issues from s u c h a young age that everything just sort of melds and all of those symptoms seem like they were formative to my self and personality (whether or good or bad) so drawing that line is hard….but necessary!

i think for me i can recognize now that when im actively trying to manage my mood and symptoms (which is not all the time lol) there comes out a kind of version of me that feels authentic, and usually i can identify that through my creativity/writing i think?? when im not dealing with depression or mania or Whatever constellation of shit is going on i see myself engaging in my interests in a way that actually feels good and healthy, and i kind of identify That Person with a separation from bipolar

but! i also know that the fundamental way i process my emotions and everything around me is always going to be filtered through the lens of neurodivergency and bipolar regardless of how seperate i feel from it or how healthy at any given moment. when im managing myself decently and reading, writing, going out into nature and doing the things i like (and actually enjoying them!!) i actually can appreciate the fact that theres this different element to the way i think….

Inumaki has always been an interesting character and while I don't have yandere headcanons for him at the moment, I'll try to incorporate some as we go on. oooooh interesting question! so i noticed a couple of habits;

jungwon: kisses with him are always slow and soft. they could last for a long time yet still stay that way. his hands mostly stay on my cheeks or shoulders. we always have to rest our foreheads together at the end, he absolutely loves it

heeseung: they’re always slow with him but it switches between soft, passionate and rough, depending on the mood. he loves placing his hands on the sides of my neck or lets his fingers draw shapes on my thigh or something

jay: with him it’s… weird. they’re always soft like our lips would touch lightly, even when they’re fast and desperate or includes tongue. he mostly likes to hold my head in place (by the side of the neck, my cheeks, back of my head- it differs)

jake: jake and i’s kisses always ‘take forever’ (in the words of jay). they annoy the others because we take a minimum of two minutes- even if we have to take breaks, it can never be truly short. the ‘techniques’ differ and he loves to hold my body close

sunghoon: sunghoon’s kisses escalate. they would begin soft and turn more passionate, whether right away or after a few moments. his hands will either just stay on my waist or one of them would tangle themselves in my hair

sunoo: kisses with sunoo are, like jay, very light. but this month we experimented and tried out harder kisses, which i think he enjoys. he likes to place one hand on either the side of my face or the back of my head, and the other on either my shoulder or back

niki: riki lets me lead the kiss. even when he initiates it, he would immediately surrender and lets me set the pace. he would mostly rest one hand elsewhere (like the chair’s armrest, for instance) while the other is tangled in my hair
