Marten moodboard! Martens are polygamous, meaning that one marten of any sex may have multiple mates at once. They are omnivorous and one of their most common foods is voles. American martens are prized for their pelts in northern Canada by indigenous tribes.

Back when I was younger and became obsessed with European pine martens, I'd spend hours scrolling through youtube videos and google image results of them, and at some point I started noticing when they were misidentified. This is what started my interest in identifying them, and part of the inspiration for this blog.

The most common animal to be incorrectly labelled as a pine marten was the beech marten, also known as the stone marten. I thought it would be fun to do a general post on how to tell them apart, since this was the thing that started it all!

They're actually quite easy to tell apart when you know what to look for!

Beech marten (Martes foina)

The beech marten is more 'stoat-like' than the pine marten in appearance. They are generally a bit smaller, and with shorter, rounder ears. They also have white undercoats, pale noses, and a white bib.

European pine marten (Martes martes)

The pine marten has a darker undercoat, larger ears, and a pale cream or yellow bib. They have black or brown noses, and slightly longer legs.
