okay. So I've finished book 1 of keeper of the lost cities for the first time. And I'm loving this keefe dude already?? Like I never thought I'd like a fictional character so quickly. All it took was like one page for me to fall for him, I am aware that keefe is one of the most loved characters in the fandom, and I can see why (correct me if I'm wrong).

Also the book is a solid 9.5/10, the only thing I was frustrated about was probably the slight info dumping about the whole blackswan thing towards the end? because it took me like 3 reads to understand the whole situation, of course, we could just narrow it down to me being slow too, lol. But I'm VERY excited to continue reading the rest. So while we're at it, I'll put in my first impressions of the characters, so I can look back on it after I've read all the books, to see how much my perception has changed of them.

Sophie- i like her, she's really mature for her age, I keep forgetting that she's like 12 lmao. But she's well written, her emotions seem very raw and natural. Of course, she may seem overpowered but, I think that's the whole point of the story, she is supposed to be overpowered, so I don't mind and i wouldn't call her a Mary sue. Overall great protagonist, my girlie deserves a break tho, she got dumped in the hospital atleast 6 times lol.

Fitz- i actually think he's cool. I liked him better in the beginning of the story tho, I feel like afterwards, the dude kinda just disappeared a little? Keefe and Sophie seemed to have more private interaction than those two, and keefe literally only came by in the middle. But yeah, I feel like he had more of a personality in the start. Keefe and Dex, in my opinion had more personality in 5 minutes than fitz did the whole book, but I wouldn't judge so quickly, it's only the first book after all, Hopefully he'd have more page time in the later books. I still like him tho, just not as much as keefe.

Dex- Yeah he is such a typical best friend, I love him. His beef w the vackers is so funny lol I was relieved when Sophie stuck with him even after she became popular tho, also, he seems to have a crush on sophie right? It's kinda obvious, but overall friendship goals 10/10. I vocally "AWW-ed" after he said "are you kidding, i can't wait to tell everyone that you're my first friend" like I need a guy bestie like him :(

Alden- honestly, my heart warmed so much with his father-like dynamic with sophie tbh. He seemed to genuinely care about her well being, but I don't want to get too attached to him tho, just in case becomes a traitor or some shit later on, you can literally never tell with the adults lol. I've read enough books to back that up. But yeah, i really like him and della, the amount of reassuring hugs he gives sophie really heals me :(, They're like sophies 2nd (well, in her case, 3rd) parents. The amount of effort and lengths Alden put to get her out of trouble is actually sweet.

Elwin- This guy is such a W. He is like an adult keefe tbh. He is probably my favorite adult so far lol.

Cassius- I'm sorry, but Mr jerk face over here reminds me SO much of Lucius Malfoy??? Like ?? I feel so bad for Keefe, like poor baby leave him alone smh. I really wanna deck his royal highness in the face tbh.

Biana- absolutely loathed her in the beginning, she gave off such bad snob vibes lol but I love her now. I like the trope of two people forced to be friends w eachother by someone actually end up becoming friends. It's rather uncommon as far as I've read, atleast.

Grady and Edaline- is it bad that i thought they were going to be evil? Yeah I have so much trust issues, it's concerning. But yeah, they're both big W's, their backstory, their temporary contemplation to reject sophies adoption, everything aligned well with their backstory. Greatly written characters.

And last but not least, the king himself, Keefe- okay, he's like added to my list of fictional crushes now lol (along with Percy Jackson, Jason grace, Steve Harrington, chat noir, Eugene fitzherbert, edmund pevensie and Ravi singh ofc). How does sophie not have a fat crush on him, like- ma'am if you don't want him, I'll take him. But jokes aside, he feels like the most authentic character out of them all, tbh. Epitome of great writing. He was inserted to the story as this random dude that sophie runs into, and becomes an og in like 5 minutes. He is like a mix of Eugene from tangled, Kristoff from Frozen and chat noir from mlb all at the same time?? I cannot wait to see more of him and his backstory, especially with his parents. I know alot of people dislike the humorous guy with depression trope since it's overused, but I like how it played out on keefe, he uses school as an escape, which is very relatable.

Also, bonus, i LOVE the world building, the light leaping and all, very creative. I cannot wait to get my hands on book 2

Who's your least favorite KOTLC character and why?

OKAY.

So.

Least favorite IN UNIVERSE or least favorite AS A CHARACTER?

Because in universe, I have so much hatred for Lady Gisela that it isn’t even funny. How could you do ANY of this to your son. Like even Vespera, who is insanely ruthless, has the whole numb-empathy-making-it-so-nothing-feels-like-hurting-people thing making her 1% more sympathetic (she still sucks majorly—don’t get me started on the thing with the humans). But Gisela just does all of this to H E R. S O N. I dislike Cassius of course but Gisela was just cruel, especially for showing at least a little affection……and then always having been manipulating him and then CHANGING HIM WITHOUT HIS PERMISSION IN A WAY THAT COULD HAVE KILLED HIM??? Also who seals a creepy doorway with their tiny son’s blood that’s just SO MESSED UP. Like, NO. Stop being the way you are. Just stop. This isn’t even just because I love Keefe. Even if you hate Keefe you should despise Lady Gisela. I hope Keefe gets to stab her. Or Sophie. Or actually Fitz that could be so good, his act on behalf of his best friend who he hasn’t talked to enough lately. Actually all three of them could stab her. Actually the whole crew could do an Ides of March and just totally Julius Caesar her…. All of them get to stab her.

BUT. Gisela is a great character. So who do I hate as a character? Probably Timkin Heks actually. His existence just angers me and there isn’t any great redeeming value to him, other than the fact that he gives background to Stina’s family and that stuff gets a little interesting. Which probably means Shannon is doing a GREAT job with the way she write him cause we’re not supposed to like him. Or wait wait wait. Councillor Alina!! GET RID OF HER. We don’t need her. GONE. POOF. She serves a purpose in the story sure, but I don’t have to LIKE IT.

I would never choose to make Gisela vanish from the story—I would choose to let the Keeper crew get their revenge (especially Keefe) and destroy her entirely. But if I could never have to meet Timkin Heks and just know that he exists for plot reasons, I’d be chill with that. And if I could poof Councillor Alina out of existence, I totally would!! Sure there would have to be another council member being gross and annoying, but I have so much beef with this woman, like honestly I hope the rest of the council just banishes her.

I'm SO glad that post was well received, because I was sweating BULLETS.

To preface this post, I must admit I have been a Fitz girlie since day one. A lot of my issues with Keefe stem from the WAY he is written, and the way the narrative favors him and justifies him. Fitz comes into play, because Fitz and Keefe are used as narrative devices to contrast one another. However that was not always the case. In the earlier books, when they were still close friends, they agreed on a lot and seemed to know each other well. And then BOOM- Neverseen hits, Keefe is super reckless (even if his heart was in the right place) and is immediately forgiven for it. He became a fan favorite, and thus the decline in Fitz's original character begins. Shannon had to ruin Fitz's character to prop Keefe's up in the later books-- which comes off as supremely lazy to me. And I just cannot get over the complete character assassination of Fitz. Which again, not really a KEEFE issue, but more so my beef with the writing and execution.

That was a giant preface. I'm sorry. anway-

In previous posts about Keefe, I've gone over the way he often airs out and announces Sophie's emotions to the room, and he uses the fact that he can feel her emotions to get her to share secrets with him that she otherwise wouldn't. This is never seen as a bad thing, but when Fitz- who is not privy to Sophie's emotions- asks her how she's feeling or for her thoughts, it's suddenly 'invasive' and 'pushy'.

I've also gone over how Keefe lets Ro, his bodyguard, just verbally insult and berate Fitz, his supposed best friend, and never comes to his defense. Keefe- while consumed with his own issues, is often dismissive of others' issues. Which I don't blame him for- but he's never held accountable for it.

With quotes like (and I'm paraphrasing) "Yeah but you get to go back to perfect Vacker Land when all is said and done"- this was directed at Fitz when Fitz was trying to bring perspective and comfort. I believe this happened in either Neverseen or Lodestar. He also refuses to relate to Fitz or meet him in the middle on any issues ever. When Fitz points out that they both have traitors in the family, Keefe is quick to scoff and dismiss this olive branch.

Another moment is when he tells Tam that the role of "Mommy/daddy issues is taken" and in inadvertent ways, pokes fun at Tam's coping mechanisms. in front of everyone.

And then you get moments, like in Flashback, where Fitz directly tells Sophie he doesn't feel like he's allowed to be hurt the way he is- because he doesn't have it 'as bad' as other characters. <- huh wonder where that comes from.

Just not a great look imo.

I am also just really tired of the 'I use humor to hide how broken I am' archetype often found in literature. And while it may be relatable to many people, and a reason why he is a favorite- I'm just tired of seeing it, and I think it could have been done better. But it is a middle grade series, so of course it's a bit dumbed down.

I also get annoyed when Keefe butts in to any moment concerning Sophie because he just HAS to get a word in. He HAS to prove why he 'Knows Foster best'. All of the characters do this to an extent, but he does it the most and it's like- STAWP PLEASE.

Keefe is also just... blatantly mean in his own POV? Especially towards Fitz. He calls him boringly perfect, mentions how he wants to punch him, internally agrees with Ro's jabs etc-

and the other half of his POV is just ruminating on his sucky life and the 'cute worry line between Foster's brows'

and maybe I'm not being fair to him. Because LISTEN- I don't want him to be a perfect character. My issue is that he's obviously NOT perfect, but the narrative never makes him out to be imperfect. It runs circles around itself justifying him and his actions- but doesn't offer the same grace to any of the other characters besides Sophie.

South Indian!Biana Having A Half Sari Function

A/N: Let me self project with cultural headcanons thank you very much... even though I don’t remember much from my own function from years ago agh—for the record, basically what a half sari function is a South Indian tradition for females after they get their first menstrual cycle to have this big momentous event where they wear a half sari and people bless them. According to tradition, they’ll wear half saris to all formal functions afterward, until their wedding, where they wear a full sari for the first time.

Anyway in this AU the Neverseen don’t exist

And they are ~human~

Biana was thirteen years old when they hosted the half sari function

And she was excited

She’d gone to plenty of her family member’s half sari function (shh let’s pretend all the vackers are south indian okay)

Because finally it was her turn

The days leading up to her half sari function were hectic

Biana went to an insane amount of dress fittings

She also had to take a bunch of pictures

Those were all pretty boring, for the most part

Getting henna done was actually pretty fun, though

The henna covered her hands and forearms

She also got it done on her feet

Waiting for it to dry was a pain, though, since she couldn’t really move

And also she had to fight the urge not to peel it off

She’d gotten her cousins to get henna done with her so at least she had a distraction

Getting makeup done was also a long time of sitting still

AND THEN she had to fit into another lehnga for the first part of the ceremony

Finally, when the second part of the ceremony began, Biana could fit into her actual half sari

But of course there had to be a lot of pictures

Like... a LOT of pictures

Even more than when she was just in her lehnga during the first half

Everyone had to line up and take pictures and then bless her

The whole situation would be taking hours, she was told

Fitz kept cackling at Biana’s scowl

He still had to be in a lot of photos as her brother

There were a lot of family pictures involved

But for the most part it was Biana and the guests

After all the elders and the adults blessed her would Biana be taking photos with her friends

Keefe would not stop posing

He did all the faces and acted like he was on Project Runway

Marella basically did the same thing

Sophie mostly hid in the photos

Dex just. grinned.

Tam and Stina looked like they wanted to be anywhere else apart from all the people but at least they gave Biana their best wishes

Linh was very very excited about the whole thing

Wylie was the only one who was actually normal

Eventually Fitz pulled them all away to go eat

The buffet had all the food

Biana had wanted to try all her favorite dishes *cough* gobi manchurian *cough*

But no

She still had pictures to take :/

Fitz promised to have the chefs save some of the food for her

He’d been to plenty of half sari functions and he knew how fast the food ran out

Tbh Keefe were the ones eating most of the food

He was having a field day at the buffet

Not that his white people taste buds could actually handle that much spice lmao

His tongues were on fire after a single taste of REAL chili chicken

”THIS ISN’T WHAT I HAD AT YOUR HOUSE FITZ”

“Keefe, we lowered the spice levels accordingly for you.”

Fitzy had the chefs make Keefe mild *cough* bland *cough* dishes when they were cooking another round

Marella went and got henna done

She ended up roping Sophie into it

“It’s so pretty and Biana told us both to go talk to the henna artist.”

”But I want to try the gulab jamun—”

”Not now!”

Linh was the one who ate all the gulab jamun by the time their henna dried

Stina ended up having beef against Gossipy Desi Aunties

They started being all judgy and then Stina absolutely threw hands

Gossipy Desi Aunties left early (much to Della and Fitz’s delight)

Stina is now an honorary Vacker

Wylie somehow ended up at a table with the Tired Indian Uncles

They were discussing cricket

Wylie had never watched a cricket match but acted like he knew what they were talking about

All in all the situation was very awkward for him

He asked Fitz later why the Tired Indian Uncles were so... well, tired

Fitz didn’’t really have an answer

”Desi uncles are just like that, who knows why.”

(also for the record, in ~brown culture~ we’re just supposed to call adults “uncle” and “auntie” idk why—)

Tam and Dex went off and did A Thing for Biana

And by that it meant that they went searching to go find something that worked as an adequate present since they didn’t realize they had to bring her one

(even though actually presents weren’t really necessary, that was only something the adults did—)

They ended up building her a tower out of plastic forks

Biana still keeps it in her room to this day

She did not get to try her gobi manchurian, for the record

Because of all the photos she had to keep taking

She did end up getting to eat some of the jalebi that Fitzy and the chefs saved for her though

And she had pretty henna to show for her half sari function

So for the record it was half okay

Though she was very happy when she could finally change out of the half sari because as pretty as it was the jewelry was really weighing down on her

Biana took a nice long nap afterwards

Shane MacGowan: A Crock of ****? Part One

So, we had Julian Temple’s film about Shane MacGowan on BBC4 the other night, called The Crock of Gold.. And hard work it was too; I had to watch it in three separate viewings. Just like having to spend an evening with an unpleasant and patronising drunk. (Think Sid Vicious in Temple’s film of the Sex Pistols,The Filth and the Fury, nodding out by the side of Nancy, and making about as much sense.) Now, I’m a big fan of Temple’s work, including his peon to London, London: the Modern Babylon, and the city in some way provides a link between all three of Temple’s documentaries. I’m not proposing to discuss MacGowan’s ‘Irish  poetic genius’, but do want to explore why he has been proposed as such, and to why some (mostly) men are so sycophantic and brown-nosing around and about him. An alternative title for this blog was Just like Keith Richards, in that both men have been lionised by a particular type of music fan, despite having produced nothing of any value for several decades. Both have been spuriously celebrated for being still alive at this point in time - the difference is that Richards is quite likeable and seemingly modest, and seems to be in reasonable shape. MacGowan lacks both qualities.

The Crock of Gold was financed by Johnny Depp, in the news recently for his own particular contribution to #MeToo. Depp clearly so wants to be ‘rock and roll’, and seems to find McGowan’s every utterance unutterably hilarious (they aren’t, being mostly incomprehensible). Ditto the usual suspects, Bobbie Gillespie and Nick Cave (similar exponents of macho posturing, vide Murder Ballads and Vanishing Point, for example). Even Bono gets in on the act. MacGowan’s  posturing about the IRA (in person to Gerry Adams, ffs) invites similar ridicule to Gillespie’s around The Black Panthers and Cave’s around Stagger Lee and the reductio ad absurdum of the utterly tedious ‘O’Malley’s Bar’ (on Murder Ballads). Add The Clash to make a toxic stew of white male testosterone (beefed up by unhealthy doses on narcotics, in most of these cases, Strummer excepted). Despite the incredibly loyal Victoria Clarke, MacGowan’s audience seems to be overwhelmingly masculine. (The live Pogues film clips show the audience to almost entirely consist of shouty, sweary and sweaty blokes, intoxicated with their own belligerence and pissed swagger.) The violence against women in Cave’s oeuvre has drawn much comment, but MacGowan mainly reserves his own ire for those who have somehow upset him for whatever reason, Bob Gelfof (now I wonder why?), the English generally (”I feel guilty for not joining the IRA” is one of his more preposterous  bon mots), W.B Yeats.

MacGowan’s self-presentation of a horny-handed man of the Irish soil and public house seems rather contradicted by his obvious tipple of choice (and it ain’t Guinness or whiskey): the sheer fact that he’s nodding out in nearly every ‘shot’ is testament to Thailand’s favourite export. Despite the whole ‘survivor’ shtick (which has served Keef so well), he seemed confined to a wheelchair at the time of the film, having apparently fallen down the stairs (can’t think how), coincidently the mode of death of Sandy Denny and John Balance (or lack of same, unfortunately). He looks absolutely TERRIBLE, and yet this seems to only spur on the sycophants and celebrants, who giggle at his every pronouncement and tablet from the mountain. (Sample: “the most popular Irish word is “fuck”, cue side-holding and tear-wiping from the likes of Depp and Clarke: ‘feck’ might have been more accurate?) The down side of this sort of hagiography is that it continues to promote decades-old ‘jazz cliches’ about substance abuse and creativity: McGowan’s brief spurt of creativity (approximately 1984-8) seems to have finished once he discovered the joys of narcotics.

The Pogues’ first three albums were wonderful (up to a point), but I think comparisons to Yeats himself, Joyce, Behan, O’Neill, Synge, etc. (as on the inside sleeve of If I Should Fall from Grace with God) stretch credibility, and underestimate the considerable contribution of the other band members. (For example, the best track on the latter album was by Phillip Chevron, ‘Thousands are Sailing’ and the ‘ka-ching’ fave, ‘Fairytale of New York’, was co-written with Jem Finer, it needs stating.)

Chicago Music Scene

For this blog post I am going to in a completely different direction as per usual. Music scenes are generated by a singular idea or motive and from there develop into something really special. It is seen all over the country in many specific ways such as Detroit HipHop, DC Hardcore, San Francisco Punk, etc. The history, setting, people, time, sounds and sights are all very integral factors in creating a music scene From these factors a large aspect develops, something special, that is a direct reflection of the community. The specific music scene that I am going to cover today is something I am sure many people are not familiar with, and it is Chicago’s drill music scene.

Drill music is a style variant of trap music that was said to have originated in the South Side of Chicago in the early 2010s. Chicago drill rap is a scene which practically revolutionized hip hop. According to Dario Lorenzo, “The genre’s songs, which are typically hallmarked by furious lyrical outbursts over dark trap beats, have long been controversial due to the violent and nihilist nature of their lyrical content”(Dariolorenzo.com). However, that is not the biggest reason why Chicago drill is unsettling to unfamiliar onlookers, it is the fact that the artists that are creating these songs are very young.

It is said that artist Chief Keef symbolizes Chicago drill and he was one of, if not the main reasons as to why it became so popular. He is known as the symbol because he is the most popular out of all of the other artists that created drill music. To put this into perspective, “Chief Keef was 16 when his fame jettisoned him from the Drill-sphere into the eyes of the mainstream public. Or take the case of L’a Capone and RondoNumbaNine. The two rappers were 17 and 16 respectively when their hit single ‘Play For Keeps’ came out, racking up millions of views on YouTube”(Dariolorenzo.com). So there was this large rush of young stars, who were all out there throwing around extremely violent lyrics which naturally led to more critical scrutiny of the genre.

Only more scrutiny and speculation came after 18-year-old rapper Joseph Coleman, or Lil Jojo, was shot and killed after an internet beef with rapper Lil Reese. So after Coleman’s death, more and more critics used his death as a platform to disparage the genre for its crass presentation of violence and frequent inciteful taunts, saying it encouraged criminal activity.

This diagnosis from music critics only showed to be the start. There was a huge increase in criminal violence in response to the genre. Now whether it was directed related to the upcoming of the music genre, that I do not know, but it sure is not a coincidence. A great number of the songs in the Chicago drill category were tributes which is so crazy and sad to hear. Many of the songs were made as tributes to fallen friends and or family, the lyrics showed violent and nihilist tone, and often spoke of retaliation. Certain songs like GMEBE Pistol’s “Letter to Shayla and Roe, Part 2” were made as tributes after his sister Shayla and his best friend Roemello were killed in street violence. Songs such as this one brought another subgenre to the Chicago scene. According to Dario Lorenzo, “In a way, this departure from the typical conventions of Chicago drill beats is rather emblematic, for what Pistol has encapsulated quite totally in this song is the other side of Chicago drill”(Dario Lorenzo). Lorenzo then touches on this again and I need to share it because this is so well said. He says “The song does not shy away or skirt around emotional vulnerability as other songs in the genre do; it functions as an emotional conduit, a direct corridor into the heart, a humanization of the suffering which is so often depicted by the music industry without a second thought”(Dario Lorenzo).

I am not even that big of a fan of this type of music, but I have listened to Chief Keef in the past and it was a great experience to learn more about the background of Chicago drill and how it has inspired so many different songs nowadays. Without certain music scenes such as Chicago drill, there would not be some songs that we all know and listen to everyday.

gir rarely barks, but he can scream. he’s eaten things that would probably kill your average dog and been completely fine. his fur is so nasty that it looks green in certain lighting. he smells of old beef and syrup no matter how much you wash him. gir is so goddamned strange that people joke that he’s not really a dog. zim will become extremely defensive if anyone brings this up.

dib is secretly fascinated by humans, but he’s doing his best to hide it. can’t get attached to the beings you’re trying to destroy, after all. both he and gaz have holographic disguises, but sometimes they don’t work properly (shutting off at bad times, glitching). his antenna got bent sometime during his testing phase, but thankfully that antenna wasn’t connected to anything important. he lowkey has doubts about taking over earth, but he’s well aware that gaz could send him back to earth to be disassembled if he tried anything. he’s not trying to stop zim to save earth, but because he thinks zim is a rival invader here to steal their mission.

zim

zim isn’t an alien in this au, he’s just strange. hes not a very responsible pet owner, since he usually lets gir run wild and feeds him the stuff he won’t touch (which would be bad if gir was a normal dog). he’s still grossed out by a lot of earth food and he absolutely hates the feeling of getting wet (although he won’t dissolve if you put him in water. dib tested that out already). from what everyone can tell, he lives alone. he’s actually distantly related to red and purple, but neither of them want to admit that they’re related to him. gir is probably the closest thing he has to an actual friend (except for keef, but it’s pretty one-sided). maybe it’s because zim has been better with animals than people all along. or maybe it’s because gir is just happy that he gives him food.

gaz

gaz is allergic to meat and sensitive to grease, but that hasn’t kept her away from pizza, even if it gets her sick every damn time. her plan is to wait for the right opportunity to take over earth. for now, she’s more than happy to just sit around and play video games all day while waiting for that perfect moment. during her time in the irken military, the tallests quickly found out that while she was excellent at combat, she was taking her anger out on her fellow invaders instead of the enemy. bitters deemed her defective and planned to have her deactivated, but membrane insisted that she be sent to earth for just one more chance.

The Library Book by Susan Orlean

This book, by Shaker Heights native and the author of the Orchid Thief, tells the story of the huge fire at the Los Angeles Public Library. Because it took place during the same week as the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, not many people outside California know the story. The author reopens the unsolved mystery of the most catastrophic library fire in American history. The fire was disastrous: it reached 2000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed four hundred thousand books and damaged seven hundred thousand more. Investigators descended on the scene, but more than thirty years later, the mystery remains: Did someone purposefully set fire to the library--and, if so, who? Part mystery, part love letter to American libraries, Orlean tells a fascinating story.

Say nothing: a true story of murder and memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe

This book which appeared on all the major top ten lists for 2019 is a great true crime story that reads like a novel. In December 1972, Jean McConville, a thirty-eight-year-old mother of ten, was dragged from her Belfast home by masked intruders, her children clinging to her legs. They never saw her again. Her abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress.

Fiction

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

I found this book to be one the best surprises of the last year. Eleanor Oliphant struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country this fictionalized account was one of my favorite books I read last year. At once both heartbreaking and heart warming, it tells a story you will remember long after turning the last page.

This weekend we had a Humphrey Bogart marathon. Watched To Have and Have Not, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, and The African Queen. Besides killing a Sunday afternoon it was so much fun hearing all the classic lines and enjoying the wonderful supporting performances.
