Even with all the controversy don’t you think Bellamort has roots in canon compared to other totally random and performative ships? I think a lot of fans get annoyed with Bellatrix’s personality and dismiss her because she’s intense, but to me that’s exactly what makes her special, she doesn’t care about fitting gender norms expected from women, like not even Voldemort could handle who she is. That just proves her fanaticism is driven more by what she believes in than by her world revolving around him. And even if it did I don’t get why people complain about that lol it’s her choices as an independent woman. A lot of Voldemort ships end up twisting the other character to resemble Bellatrix anyway or give them similar traits like that main ship of his I’m not even naming here hahahaha
I mean, Bellatrix and Voldemort do have a kid in the Cursed Child - so if you consider Cursed Child canon, then of course they're canon.
In the main books, Bellatrix definitely is in love with Voldemort (or at very least speaks to him "as if to a lover.") Helena Bonham-Carter and Ralph Fiennes also lean into this - Bellamort shippers need to get ON the cut scene where Bellatrix tries to give Voldemort her wand (32:12)
youtube
But I would say that how Book Voldemort feels about Bellatrix is deliberately kept ambiguous. The question of how Voldemort defines love, and if he's even capable of remorse, or the *type* of love that is Harry's main superpower, is very tied into to the plot and theme of the book. Dumbledore (who the books frame as an authority on these sorts of things) comes down on the side of Voldemort not being able to love. The most he'll say is that Voldemort gets fond of people. "I think he is perhaps as fond of [Nagini] as he can be of anything." Also in the job interview flashback, Dumbledore roasts Voldemort for calling his Death Eaters "friends." says they're really his "servants."
("Voldemort is incapable of feeling love" is very boring from a character standpoint though, so I'm not surprised that fan writers interested in Voldemort ... ignore that.)
Actually, now that I think about it. It if you want to get into Voldemort ships with both textual evidence and authorial intent behind them... you could do a lot worse than Voldemort/Nagini. She is a human woman trapped in a snake body (I mean, if you consider the Fantastic Beasts films canon.) Which means maybe she does technically pass the Harkness test? Either way, JKR saying that the giant snake used to be a human woman (and that she knew this the whole time) is... an interesting choice.
Dumbledore - who considers himself a bit of a Tom expert - says he's the most fond of her. Nagini has part of Voldemort's soul inside her (so cue all the Tomarry headcannons, equally relevant here.) AND she kept homunculus!Voldemort alive with her venom? which is... something. Voldemort also seems to give her the most delicate assignments, she's his main executioner, she can possess and move around other dead bodies? So um. That's on the table for them. I guess.
(He's Voldemort, he's not going to have a vanilla love life.)
So what does he feel about Bellatrix? I don't know. He calls her by a pet name (Bella), but he also groups her in with Lucius when he's feeling angsty and trust-no-one.
it had been a grave mistake to trust Bellatrix and Malfoy: Didn’t their stupidity and carelessness prove how unwise it was ever to trust?
He alludes to punishing her in some way (... sexy?) and but then completely ignores her.
“Be quiet, Bella,” said Voldemort dangerously. “I shall deal with you in a moment. Do you think I have entered the Ministry of Magic to hear your sniveling apologies?” “But Master — he is here — he is below —” Voldemort paid no attention
Hot and cold, really. Some definite mixed messages. Which Snape of all people calls out:
“He shares everything with me!” said Bellatrix, firing up at once. “He calls me his most loyal, his most faithful —” “Does he?” said Snape, his voice delicately inflected to suggest his disbelief. “Does he still, after the fiasco at the Ministry?”
There's the interesting scene at the Malfoy dining table, where Voldemort gets all the other Death Eaters laughing at her:
“I don’t know what you mean, my Lord.” “I’m talking about your niece, Bellatrix. And yours, Lucius and Narcissa. She has just married the werewolf, Remus Lupin. You must be so proud.” There was an eruption of jeering laughter from around the table. Many leaned forward to exchange gleeful looks; a few thumped the table with their fists (...) so jubilant were they at Bellatrix and the Malfoys’ humiliation. Bellatrix’s face, so recently flushed with happiness, had turned an ugly, blotchy red.
But then he shuts that down, and gets Bellatrix feeling grateful and doubly committed to him:
“Yes, my Lord,” whispered Bellatrix, and her eyes swam with tears of gratitude again. “At the first chance!” “You shall have it,” said Voldemort.
So, if nothing else... he's manipulative, and his manipulations are working on Bellatrix. (or maybe she's got a humiliation kink, who knows.) But he seems to like alternating between punishment and reward, and Bellatrix is never quite sure which one is coming.
I've seen the read that the "the happiest he had been in fourteen years" is referring specifically to the fact that *Bellatrix* has escaped Azkaban, but I would say that one probably has more to do with the power/success/euphoria that comes from generally winning, and effortlessly executing a mass Azkaban breakout. Same with his "scream" after Bellatrix's death, I think that's more to do with the fact that the tide of the battle has definitely turned.
Like, I love Bellatrix, I think she's fascinating. And I would say she's definitely a fan favorite - everyone loves a really gleeful bad guy, especially in a universe where a lot of characters are very angsty.
The Harry Potter books also have this pattern, where if you're a female character who doesn't have kids, and isn't interested in taking care of kids - then you're at best kind of tough and cold (Amelia Bones, Madame Pince.) But who are we kidding, you're probably just a baddie. (Bellatrix, Rita, Umbridge.) So weirdly, a lot her villains can have this almost... feminist flavor to them? Which makes them very compelling, in the eyes of her adult fans.

It's no wonder Dumbledore was in love with Grindelwald. I mean it in the same way as it's no wonder Bellatrix was in love with Voldemort.
They're all so fucking vile.
P.S: Why the "anti-Dumbledore" tag is filled with 'pro marauder' and 'anti Snape' shit? Ew. For some reason all the posts are 'anti-anti Dumbledore'

This is so fuckin True. Both present day Lord Voldemort and young Diary Tom Marvolo Riddle literally viewed Harry as a fuckin Parasite who he just couldn’t get rid off that was stealing from his greatness and Life. He also hates people who tried to change him. What he actually wanted as revealed in the Books and explained by Rowling was a Home and People who accepted and loved him for WHO and WHAT he was rather than who he could be. And the only one who genuinely accepted him and loved him unconditionally was Bellatrix
He needs to feel that anger and hate in order to become better. Bellamort is the easier ship. Harrymort is the ship of redemption, of drama, of passion, of trying to develop genuine respect for each other, of humanity.
This is all that I need to know that this anon does not understand or genuinely like Voldemort, otherwise they wouldn't want to change him. Voldemort hated everyone—Dumbledore, Mrs. Cole—who as much as thought of changing him. How can you think he would ever regard someone who wanted to change him—him!—with anything but utter scorn? Especially someone like Harry, a boy he viewed as nothing but a pathetic child.
I don't think Tomarry (and Tomione) shippers truly understand Voldemort. They certainly cannot see through his eyes or empathise with him. Perhaps they like him from a distance as admirers, or maybe the idea of him, but they don't know him like I do. While I can't speak for other Bellamort shippers, I ship him with Bellatrix because I have been Voldemort. Nay, I am him. I know what he needs, and what he needs isn't someone who, like many others before, hates his true self and wants to impose their ideas of morality on him. What he needs is acceptance, true and unconditional acceptance, and only Bellatrix can give him that, because she, too, is him. A kindred spirit who alone can know what it's like to be Voldemort. Not see his thoughts, but to be him, to see things as he does, to want what he wants. To magnify who he is instead of diminishing it.
Harry could never never be that. Nobody else could.
If you dislike Voldemort and want him changed, you can ship Harrymort all you want, but I love Voldemort and I want him to be who he is, so I ship Bellamort.

The one Bellamort shipper and the one Bellamort hater should stop arguing. It's honestly getting tedious and clogging the page. It's so repetitive too and always goes like this:
Bellamort shipper: here's some critical analysis that's well supported by quotes from the books and shows clear awareness of how the writer's choices shape meaning and create effects. Logical. Well structured. Sound.
Bellamort hater: b-but, here's the thing I just made up!
I don't know why the Bellamort shipper puts up with it. Are they masochistic or something?

Lol I think it is so curious you have such interesting HC on Voldemort and then I find out you like Tomarry. I was surprised sure but I couldn't have been more wrong. Obviously, anyone who calls Voldemort Tom instead of using the name he chose gives themselves away instantly. Only Bellamort shippers understand and appreciate Voldemort. It starts with the obvious, the ship has 'mort' in it and most others only started liking Voldemort because of the pathetic image called Tom Riddle. Voldemort is everything he wanted to become, but you cling to a version he despised. How bigoted. If at least you had stuck to your analysis instead of diving into the ships area that fully undermine the canon and the author's own work, maybe you'd have more credibility. Just a professional advice.
LOL
just a *professionals* advice (don’t forget the ‘s’)
“How bigoted” “undermine the canon and the author’s work” (didn’t she fund an anti trans bill??)
“Cling to a version he despised” sounds like a you issue, I’m too busy frolicking.
“Maybe you’d have more credibility” damn, I didn’t know I needed a degree in JKR canon for headcanons and analyses

for some reason, I think Bellatrix would feel like having a child would be the greatest betrayal to herself
I firmly believe that Bellatrix agreed to have a child only because it was Voldemort's son, otherwise she would never have agreed to carry a pregnancy.

You handled those anons with so much grace. I suspect the Bellamort fandom has a sockpuppet issue, which might be the source of all the current rage bait/cop behaviour from their corner, including those anons, especially since their most vocal member has you blocked. Those anons read like a pastiche of their style. You handled them like a pro and your analysis is on point, but I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Something is deeply weird there.
Anyway, thank you for creating such impeccable fanart and spreading so much fandom joy 💖
😭😭<-happy tears. Thank you so much, this is so sweet!! I really appreciate your message. It’s a weird situation, but unfortunately kind of a thing that’s happened in fandom forever. Hopefully bringing it to light and talking about it will help get rid of it though. Thank you again 💚💚💚💚

Hey, guys. Most of you are probably here from my main account, @vyrid, in which case—welcome back! I’ve been meaning to start a discussion/analysis/review blog for a while, but never got it around to it. Well—here it is!
Down below are going to be the lists of things I write about, and currently, there are 3 main categories: Books, Characters, and Ships. I believe those 3 sum everything up pretty nicely, but if anybody has other ideas, please let me know! (There’s also a 4th category where people ask me specific questions on posts I’ve already made, so #4 is basically an extension. Feel free to skip!)
P.S; please do not be offended if your ask doesn’t get answered as quickly as other’s asks! The main reason I might be putting yours off will probably be for the following reasons:
I haven’t read the book you want yet, and it’s on TBR
Schoolwork is getting in the way
I’m working on it
No ask will go ignored and I swear it’s still in the ask box, waiting to be opened! Please be patient 🥹❤️

What do you think of Bellatrix? Would you have liked to explore more dynamics about her?
I *love* unpacking sibling dynamics and toxic relationships, so of course I find Bellatrix fascinating. (Also "Bellatrix Lestrange" might be my favorite name in a series full of very good names. 10/10.)
To me, what's key about Bellatrix is that she's the oldest of the three Black sisters. She could have been written as the indulged, attention-seeking bratty baby... but that would be a less interesting character.
Growing up, I think Narcissa was probably the quiet, passive child. That's her strategy when Voldemort shows up and she's once again living with a powerful, unstable authority figure. (I mean we have no info about what Cygnus Black was like, but he's Walburga Black's younger brother, and I imagine they probably enforced each other's extremism and intensity after their brother got blasted off the tapestry.) Narcissa's strategy is fade to the background, don't react, don't let them see what you're thinking, let them ignore you.
(I also think it's very believable that she went subtly went low contact with the Blacks after she married Lucius. The Malfoys have *always* been much more squeamish about violence, and much more politically moderate. I think Narcissa likes that.)
Andromeda you can take in a couple of different directions, but she was probably the problem child/scapegoat. And if she wasn't before she married Ted, she DEFINITELY was after. She also looks so much like Bellatrix that Harry does a double take, which I think... would have really bugged Bellatrix growing up, and informed their dynamic. Bellatrix sees herself as SO exceptional that she wouldn't want to be compared to anyone... but if she were, then it would be important that any casual comparisons come out in HER favor. (Which can't have been fun for Andromeda.) It's interesting that Voldemort underlines the connection between the two sisters as a way to get under Bellatrix's skin, and it works *really* well. She's got a competitive streak.
Because Bellatrix would have 100% grown up the *Golden Child.* Powerful, driven, beautiful in a striking way. The Daddy's Girl energy is off the charts (and she was probably Aunt Walburga's favorite too.) Bellatrix is described as acting like a queen, which is exactly how she sees herself. She grew up in an echo chamber not only telling her that people like her were special and better... but that she was the most Special one within the Special group.
So she meets Lord Voldemort. He's beautiful, driven, brilliant, power levels off the charts. He's Grindelwald born again (but straight) (probably.) He's not just the Dark Lord, he's a King. He wants to rule the world as an immortal god-king. He tells Bellatrix that this is going to happen, and she believes him.
And like - of course she's into that. But also, seeing yourself as a temporarily embarrassed Immortal Goddess Empress requires such a specific self-concept. You are going to need a delusionally high opinion of yourself... but also enough talent/power/beauty/external validation to carry that idea into adulthood.
(also Rodolphus... he doesn't count. Good Marriage was just another box to check as a young woman so Bellatrix could remain Perfect. The rules are different if you're a Immortal Goddess Empress anyway. Any consort she had would be so far below her own power level, or the power level of her King, that he literally would not matter. But she's not going to have a *kid* with Rodolphus. She's Voldemort's favorite, Rodolphus is not good enough. You sire PRINCES with the KING.)
Voldemort of course would know all this. And we see him have so much fun finding ways to creatively torture Lucius. He's a sadist in general sure, but there's something specifically about bringing pureblood royalty low that he gets REALLY into. He *likes* bringing up the werewolf nephew-in-law and and watching Bellatrix scramble desperately for ground, crying, while the rest of the Death Eaters point and laugh. Until he tells them to cut it out, because he's the only one with enough power to do that.
And then Bellatrix goes back to her room and probably constructs a whole narrative about how that was actually Voldemort protecting her, because she's the most Special, and it's all in good fun really. Because the alternative is having to admit that she's not extraordinary, she's just a punching bag (like Lucius Malfoy.) This is where a lot of her anger and instability come from. Every time she's in a situation where someone else is doing something *more* or *better* ... she lashes out.
In the main timeline of the books this mainly shows up in her dynamic with the other Death Eaters (and Narcissa.) Bellatrix tries to give orders in Malfoy Manor and I am sure it really annoys her that Voldemort is using Lucius' house as his HQ. That isn't how it's supposed to go! We even get the fun detail that Dumbledore thinks Bellatrix is going to try really hard to get into Grimmauld place - and of course she does, she wants to volunteer the better HQ. Narcissa is sacrificing Draco for the Dark Lord? Well, Bellatrix would have five sons (hypothetically) and sacrifice them all (happily.) She tries to shift the blame for Department of Mysteries thing 100% onto Lucius, and gets really defensive when Snape implies that he has more emotional intimacy with Voldemort than she does.
But she's still really, really useful, and Voldemort knows this. She is talented, and powerful, and his best enforcer. So he would have so much fun dangling that carrot just out of reach, forever. The prophecy makes such a big deal about Voldemort marking Harry "as his equal," because that's just not a thing he does. BELLATRIX certainly isn't his equal.
(dumbledore though... we can maybe revisit.)

Hey! I'm not really big into ships whatsoever when it comes to Harry Potter and rather ignorant of them. I like to indulge in the idea of a homosexual Tom Riddle, just as a bit of a shameless self-insertion, but I still think that's something he'd not even really act on whatsoever besides to manipulate someone. I really don't enjoy the concept of Tom x Harry though. As someone who I know has a distaste for it, would you mind explaining to me what exactly the appeal of it is to others? I feel like it's so out of character for Voldemort to do anything to Harry besides want to murder him. 😆 Thank-you for reading.
You're completely right! Tomarrymort fans insisting their ship is anything more than a crackship they can enjoy (nothing wrong with that) never fails to amuse me. I think Harry being Voldemort's 'horcrux', him being the main character, and people wanting to turn evil hot Tom Riddle 'good' is where that ship's appeal comes from. Harry and Voldemort are also supposed to be each other's foil.
They think their Horcrux connection would somehow connect them emotionally too, and that if Voldemort knew Harry was his Horcrux he would want to protect him. What I don't understand is why, even if that did happen, would 70 years old LV develop a romantic relationship with 19 years old Harry? Perhaps to manipulate him to keep his Horcrux safe? He would still never be able to even like Harry truly because they are as incompatible as two people can be. But I don't think he would risk having his soul in his enemy in the first place. According to Rowling, Harry's scar hurts because he is not a proper Horcrux and whenever Voldemort is close that piece of soul wants to rejoin him, which solves this problem because in that case it would be very easy to get that piece of soul out and then kill Harry.
Second, Voldemort would never want someone like Harry who has all his weaknesses that he wants to shed (being halfblood, being raised by Muggles, looking like his father) but none of his strengths. Harry is quite an average kid: in intelligence, magical ability, talent, willingness to learn. Voldemort acknowledges it several times and says he is nothing special, not even worth recruiting let alone becoming his boyfriend. Harry is very stuck in the concepts of good and evil which prevent him to think outside of the box, something Voldemort would hate. His nagging and moralistic nature would disgust Voldemort.
He is the anti-Bellatrix, who in the books is supposed to be the sole object of his affection. Curious, extremely intelligent, powerful magically, an aristocrat, not afraid of darkness, in fact, attracted to it as he is, an intellectual, basically royalty. She has all his strengths without his weaknesses, as she is Pureblood and an embodiment of his Cause itself.
Bella accepts him as the greatest wizard ever, appreciates the beauty of his darkness and 'justifies' his flaws (those that they really think of as flaws, like his blood status and childhood), which is why I think she was so outraged when Harry so casually mentioned his blood-status, not because she didn't know as people think. Lack of acceptance was what to me mainly made him want to rid himself of his humanity in the first place. And she? She wanted to learn from him, did learn from him. What an absolute honour that would have been for him, especially after Dumbledore's rejection.
Harry, on the other hand, pities him, which is perhaps the worst thing he would ever expect from anyone. That alone would be enough to earn him an Avada Kedavra, the expression of pity and the shame, the disgust, it would bring him, the sheer nakedness of it would pain him immensely. As does Harry's version of sacrificial love, that Voldemort never got, which he wanted to shed to completely dehumanise himself, and he did to an extent, if not for Bellatrix. Him saving her in the Department of Ministry sacrificially seemed to have been a huge blow, otherwise I doubt he would have completely separated himself from her for a while, which she insinuates in HBP. A parallel to what Dumbledore says he does by closing his mind to Harry after he feels his sacrificial love for Sirius while possessing him. It's very unlikely that was just for a prophecy.

As a Tomarry/Harrymort lover I can understand those who don’t like toxic relationships not liking Bellamort, but I don’t understand those who do and think it’s garbage. Bellamort is like toxic ship 101. It’s so delicious when you give it a try and read those lovely metas and analysis the fans make of it (plus the fanart?! Absolutely spectacular!). It’s 1000% better than Tomione, that’s for sure.

Bellamort fans find hints of love everywhere 😅 but Nagini was probably the only being he "loved" (debatable still) in canon. I think his character is so much more interesting, beyond the questions of whether he could love or not. That's why I love blogs like yours. <3
The nice thing about fandom is that they’re allowed to think whatever they want lol, and that’s beautiful. I personally don’t ship it, but I won’t yuck their yum. Nagini is a special case, I can see him loving her and not, it’s entirely dependent on how you interpret them.
Thank you! I’m so happy you like my blog, I’m actually getting tired of the love thing and will quit soon because I have other things I’d rather talk about. I just have a few asks to answer, but after I think I’m gonna go back to my regular WWII stuff and analysis on his character. I also just find discussions on love mind numbingly boring when it comes to Voldemort.

Now I have to ask, what do you think of Voldemorts and Bellatrix's relationship? I see why people argue he was fond of her, but there's been some analysis recently that feels like shippers reading a bit too much into things (like suggesting he puts himself in danger to protect her because he loves her so much) so I was wondering where your thoughts lay.
You have come to the entirely wrong blog.
I almost don't want to touch this one.
First, what you see there is shippers doing what shippers do. And the bellamort shippers are intense. They're up there with the Sherlock people in terms of intensity/shipping across fandoms. They will dissect the subtlest wigglings of Tom Riddle's eyebrows for how much he darkly cares about his Bellatrix.
As for me, I don't see it.
He does take action on her behalf, more so than he does other Death Eaters, but it never felt that special to me. More, she knows so little about him and what she worships is an illusion that's not who he is. To me this is the death knell of any real chance at a relationship between them.
Sex could have been had but I don't see it after the resurrection as I'm not sure Tom Riddle had functioning equipment after the graveyard fiasco. Not to mention Bellatrix was on death's door thanks to dementors.
So, yes, not my thing.

I find those anons' attitudes rude, but they do have a point about Bellamort being canon, no one has ever truly disproved it through careful, faithful analysis of the books. Either way, keep posting and don't let those weirdos get you down 💜
The thing is that I never even mentioned Bellamort and none of the stuff they were freaking out about had anything to do with Bellamort 😭
The fact that I believe Voldemort respects Snape more than the other Death Eaters doesn’t mean he doesn’t give a fuck at all about Bellatrix. That not the argument being made. They don’t ‘have a point about Bellamort being canon’ because none of this was about Bellamort. They pulled up on a post that had nothing to do with that ship to be angry about me not talking about their ship lmao.
I’ll do an analysis of Bellamort at some point, because I DO think they’re really interesting. And they are canon, just not in the way people want them to be.
