I'm beginning to realise that a major reason why I woke up in the middle of August and was like "I REALLY DESPERATELY URGENTLY FINALLY NEED TO DRIVE AROUND ICELAND FOR TWO WEEKS ON MY OWN" (apart from, you know, seeing Iceland) is that this will be the first time since Ireland that I will completely on my own schedule and on my own and off to clock and not available and it's really interesting that the people in my life who are the most like 'why would you want to go to Iceland on your own, there's nothing there, that sounds boring, it's empty and cold' are the ones I most need a break from. It's you, the stressor is you.

☆ 25.07.24 ~ Thursday ☆
Having the most amazing week in Berlin, I can't believe we have to come home in a couple days 😟 The weather here is gorgeous and I've spent most of today sitting in the sun and reading up on the roof terrace at the hotel 🥰📖
Yesterday we visited the Berlin Zoo, which was incredible, I have hundreds of photos, but I'll post some of them in a reblog (they won't all fit in this post!)
This has been such a fun but also relaxing week, a nice way to recover after exam season before I start preparing for September/October

Back from our mini-break to Berlin 🇩🇪
Pics from the top: Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag building (the government building - we walked all the way to the top of that central glass dome on the roof), Victory Column, remnant of the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
On day 1, we took a 6 hour guided bike tour around the city, which was totally the best way to see all the major sites as Berlin is quite a spread out city. We were away with five of our friends and we all absolutely loved this. It gave us a great overview and our guide told us lots of the history too. The photos show some of the places we saw.
On day 2, we started early and went up the dome of the Reichstag building and learnt about its history. Then we went to the Stasi museum and then the Stasi prison. Wow, I learnt so so much about life in East Berlin under Soviet rule. All those spy gadgets you read about in James Bond actually existed here, hidden cameras in ties and bags, listening devices planted in walls of rooms, members of your own family could be informing on you. The prison tour was so moving, many of the guides had been inmates there until as recently as 1989 when the prison closed down (I find it absolutely mind blowing that all this happened so recently). When the wall came down and East and West Germany reunified, all the prison staff, psychiatrists and doctors were granted immunity from prosecution so they went on to continue practising therapy and medicine for the general population, even though they had been involved in performing extreme psychological torture in the prison interrogation rooms. There were at least as many interrogation rooms than there were cells, so that tells you what went on day and night in that prison. The guides asked that we didn’t share photos of the prison on social media as they don’t want it glorified in any way.
On day 3, we went to the Topography of Terror, where we learnt more about the Nazi party, how they came into power and brought in their ideologies. Then we had to head to the airport to catch our flight home.
Berlin is a really fascinating city with so much history that it doesn’t shy away from but lays out for everyone to learn from.

One of the best-loved Christmas songs was written by a Jew, Irving Berlin. He wrote it for the now-classic 1942 film Holiday Inn—but it was not intended to be the movie's big hit. That honor was to go to "Be Careful, It's My Heart," another Berlin tune. But "White Christmas," introduced by Bing Crosby, was the public's choice. It also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The worst part about being a Classics fan is that objectively nothing happens in classics but characters being really fucking gay and/or cunty so I’m trying to talk about it and it sounds so boring coming from my uneloquent mouth

☆ 30.04.2024 ~ Tuesday ☆
Some favourite photos from my trip to Berlin this weekend!
We were only there for a couple days so we didn't get up to too much, but I LOVED visiting the sealife center! I have hundreds of photos of all the animals (I wish I was exaggerating!)
I can't wait until we go again in July and we get to visit the Zoo and do some more sightseeing, especially the river cruise we're going on!
I also managed to find a fan that matched my walking stick perfectly! Well, I was borrowing one this weekend, but it did make me finally embrace that I do, in fact, need a mobility aid, and that's okay!
So, I ordered a very similar stick from amazon which arrived today, and I'm taking it to university tomorrow, which is quite daunting, but I think it'll really help!
☆ what did you do this weekend?

📽️ White Christmas (1954)
I absolutely love this movie. It’s so simple and heartwarming. I understand that this movie isn’t for everyone, but it’s totally a classic. I personally believe that you’re basically a Scrooge if you don’t like Christmas movies, and this movie falls firmly into that category. It’s just so much fun. Now, there are several musical numbers that are a bit hard to swallow at times, but the storyline totally makes up for that. I want to watch this every Christmas season from now on.
Sex/nudity: 1/10 (some revealing dancing outfits, kissing)
Language: 1/10 (one instance of d*mn)
Violence: 1/10 (brief war scene with no injuries shown)
Overall rating: 9/10

Holiday Inn | Bing Crosby Sings "White Christmas"
"White Christmas" was composed by Irving Berlin for the 1942 musical film Holiday Inn. The composition won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 15th Academy Awards. Bing Crosby's record topped the Billboard chart for 11 weeks in 1942 and returned to the number one position again in December 1943 and 1944. His version would return to the top 40 a dozen times in subsequent years. Since its release, "White Christmas" has been covered by many artists. The version sung by Bing Crosby is the world's best-selling single.
