potential culture shocks for Bojan in Finland? 👀 do you think he has something more to add to the list next to very chill waiters and suspicious door handles?
hmmmmmmm i might be the wrong person to answer this because to me nothing about Finland is a culture shock or weird lmaoo something in the same general category as door handles and locks (which apparently are unusual to a lot of foreign people..?), one thing that comes to mind is sisäovi. jere's place is so new that he probably doesn't have a sisäovi but those seem to confuse foreigners sometimes! it's a door right after the front door, so like, you open the front door into a home and bam, there's another door to open right after. their point is insulation and soundproofing but they're not as common in new houses anymore. it's a shame jere probably doesn't have one, because i'd like to imagine bojan not expecting another door right after the front door and walking straight into it 😌 also, fun fact! in finland doors that lead outside (almost) always open out (except of course sisäovi has to open in, because you can't exactly have two doors right after one another opening the same way). there was an order to make it so in 1882, after six mass hysteria disasters in christmas churches between 1669 and 1882 killed 97 people. the common thread was that people thought there was a fire in the church (there wasn't, in any of the cases) and then tried to escape in a wave of mass hysteria. and in three of these cases people then got trapped, when the big church doors would have to be opened to swing inside the church, but the mass of people swarming to the doors made it impossible to actually open the massive doors. so people got trampled and suffocated between the doors and the mass of people coming from behind. and so in 1882 they made it so that doors in churches had to open out, and that has been the custom with all other doors that lead outside too. this has been your finnish history/culture lesson of the day that nobody asked for.

Hetalia characters as tweets but half of my twitter tl is in german so I attempted to translate it with my mediocre german abilities
Tumblr media
(Besserwessi literally would translate to “better westerner” but it’s a play on the term “besserwisser” (know it all) used by East Germans to talk about West Germans who are arrogant and condescending towards East Germans, especially when discussing economics or politics)
Tumblr media
(“Mof” is a Dutch derogatory term for Germans, mostly used after wwii, and I don’t speak Dutch so other than that this is according to google translate)

I felt obligated to do these last two bc of the meme

TF on the archetype of Papa
Marquee Magazine (October 2015)
NAMELESS GHOUL: Just as Roger Moore and Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton and George Lazenby, they all represent and sort of embody an idea of a person and the person that we know as James Bond, this sort of super human, uber cool, womanizer agent. And just as James Bond, Papa also is a stereotype and you can find Papa. Everybody knows someone who is very much like Papa: this older, besserwisser, wounded, you know, has a little rain cloud over him, has seen all, known all, doesn’t learn anything — or he does, but still he’s intuitively too macho to acknowledge it. He will. Eventually. He’s a sensitive guy too. He cries. He cries.
FADER (December 2015)
NAMELESS GHOUL: Well, all Papas are definitely the same sort of breed. They're all that sort of man that you've met at some point. Either he's your father, or he's your grandpa, or he's your friend's father, or he's the owner of the restaurant, the guy who gladly has to do speeches at weddings –and even maybe two speeches– and knows better and y'know... tries to fuck your wife.
VÄRVET (May 2018), in Swedish with official English subtitles
TOBIAS FORGE: 'Where's he from? What does he like?' Well, first of all, 'he' is several characters. And they're stereotypes. They're supposed to be someone you know or recognize. You often see them in movies, as restaurant owners or someone's dad. Some Italian dad in some New York movie –either watching TV in a white tank top– or putting on nice clothes, then going out and… He's a thin-skinned, easily offended, angry, turgid, but also humoristic person. That's a bit interesting.

The regular targeting and harassment of ms Rachel Zegler is making me SICK to my stomach. This also includes the shipping of her and her friends, as well as pure hate being thrown at her lovely boyfriend. Today’s pop culture will never not be nasty, but the burning hell these trolls have put her through? Really? Get a job, kiss a girl or actually do something.
I am so unbelievably proud and happy for this wonderful, strong, talented and beautiful lady. As a young woman myself with hopes and dreams, emotions and passions - her realness is beyond comforting with honest words that makes me feel less alone in the dark shadows of my mind.
I don’t want to get into drama, nor act like a besserwisser police officer - but some humans are beyond concerning. Josh Rivera and Rachel Zegler together, are one of the most beautiful couples in history, with a such a sweet and loving dynamic that these idiotic fools could only dream of. THE PEOPLE YOU SEE ONLINE AND IN MOVIES ARE HUMAN. Now, you might think “who does this girl think she is, she’s nobody?” AND YES. This is true because I am practically nobody. But I do have emotions and a voice. Isn’t that a concept for uttering?

You, being alone in the state you were in was a dangerous situation. At least in my opinion. But hey, maybe I'm the only one who thinks that way. Maybe I was overreacting and you had everything 'under control'. What do I know.
And be careful. If you keep telling me that my questions don't annoy you, I might start to think that you are being kind nice to me.... And nobody wants that, right, Herr Besserwisser?
Seems you are the only one who thinks that it was dangerous, given no one else was concerned or cared. And I always have everything under control, why is that in quotation marks? Of course I would never do such a thing, Fräulein Dummchen.

I am just relistening early episodes of Jago & Litefoot (you should too if you have Audible or Spotify or have like pennies to spare, the early seasons are really cheap these days) and goddamn the chemistry between the gentlemen is chef's kiss <3
The Necropolis Express is like the best episode to introduce the series to a newcomer, if you really must just pick one random episode. The contrast between Litefoot and Jago is really prominent mostly cos they are still somewhat new in their relationship, so they're bit more formal than later seasons, which brings out the upperclass vs lower class, formally educated vs learned on the job, science vs supernatural contrasts -
BUT
The thing that makes Jago & Litefoot makes so good that never sides with one characters. For example in The Necropolis Express the first half is poking fun at how superstitious and frankly ridiculous Jago is thinking that all the corpses in the coffins are alive and how the movements on the earth are machinations from Hell, and Litefoot is pointing out natural and calms explanations for all of them - ONLY for Jago to be exactly right on the money, and Litefoot is just painted bing annoying not believing first hand witness.
Then again, later in the same episode, they meet a person who has veiled their face is harsh, but somewhat polite, suspicious, yet Jago is giving every benefit of the doubt. He may be poor, down on his luck, not used to visitors, shy and reserved and that's contrasted against how Litefoot is immediately thorny and made his mind o the person - and this case Litefoot is ON POINT, he's the motherfucker of the story.
But do you see how their dynamic would work in different situations? neither really character flaws per se, they just have different sets of assets. In some episodes it's absolutely vital that Litefoot is solid on his scientifics and does't swallow any old nonsense people spew - but in other episodes that makes him a quite a annoying besserwisser. Jago is easily spooked by stories and has talent of making himself more scared with imagination - but he he doesn't doubt on the face of the devil, if he has to kill a werewolf or fight a zombie or whatever he can't be stopped by saying "but but there ain't such things as zombies." Bitch, if it bites, I act upon that, right?
Also, it's generally a positive personality trait that Jago is never bigoted or prejudiced person. On some episodes it does put him in a harm's way tho if he excuses someone too long. Litefoot has that on the spot vibe check that more often than not is useful in their infernal investigations - but it has made him strongly despise some people for flippant reasons, that make him less kind that he probably thinks he is. And on that note, sometimes he also trusts people solely on the fact that vibes didn't go off, and that's also dangerous.
So you know. Every personality trait they have is good on an one episode and bad in the next. That feels really realistic to me.

some thoughts on ADHD and ASD
Hej, my name's Ise (she/they), 24 years old, student, and about a month and a half ago I was diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. I am currently in treatment (meds and therapy) for ADHD, but my doctor says that we should first tackle that before we look at its brother, ASD.
The too-much gene
Jenna Marble's phrase "too much gene" really resonates me, because when I get excited I also have a tendency to be a bit too much to handle. When speaking about my passions, I can talk anyone into a corner, and I will dominate any seminar if I find the subject even a bit interesting. I also have a strong tendency to be a "klugscheißer" or "besserwisser" (i think that is the more international one), so I will often correct people, not to show them how i am better than them but in the interest of creating the best product. I also gague when to make those remarks: I will not apply the same scrutiny to a text written by someone who is a beginner in that language as I would to a text written by someone who is a native speaker. I usually point out, correct and sometimes explain, but I dont belittle, e.g. by saying how elementary that is.
That too much gene also shows itself in my writing, as you might have noticed. What was supposed to be a straight forward short text turns into a novel. I have really big problems narrowing in on just one topic: when tasked to write a paper one any topic regarding scandinavian monarchy, I spend two months on researching the entire history of three royal houses and earldoms and in the end could not single out a reasonable topic for one term paper.
And I have a bit of anxiety that the ADHD meds will only make me more unbearable, more to handle.
2. How do I know they are working?
I am on a constantly rising dosis of Medikinet, as of today I am taking 30mg of them in the morning and another 20mg around mid-day. While I do notice the constant tiredness that had been bugging me has reduced, i still dont "think in HD", as my doctor said I might. I am still trailing off in class, but can nevertheless still answer when the prof asks a question. I can write a pagelong essay for the student magazine in one sitting, but thanks to hyperfocus that was something I could do before. I think that maybe my energy and my motivation has risen, but not so much my ability to (control my) focus.
There is also the general problem that I am a very critical person, not (only) as in self-critical but also very much as in critical theory, how do I know that what I am experiencing is real and not a simulation, critical. Okay, maybe thats a bit too much, but more like: how do I know the meds are doing their job and this isnt just a placebo effect taking place? And what if my increase in energy is simply due to my surroundings, the sun coming back and the end of the semester approaching, the new flat, different people I hang out with or my diet and exercise, and not the meds?
And additionally, how do I know that my brain does what it is supposed to do, when it has probably never in my life done that? (And lets not get into a rant about normativity here.) This is actually a thing I was already thinking about when I was about ten years old: how I can I know what I am feeling, both emotion and sensory/pain wise, when those feelings dont come with a label and I can never know what exactly someone else is feeling?
Life doesnt come with a pop-up menu for stats, where you can clearly see whether the pain your feeling is the worst pain imaginable or whether that little hitch in your breating is due to anxiety, walking up the stairs or a cold.
