VDL gang as fruits!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
trying to make up for not posting :/ so i’ll be spam posting a little bit!! sorry if it bothers anyone.
Abigail - Mamey Sapote
named “mother of all fruits” for multiple reasons, and abigail is basically like the 2nd camp mother, after ms. grimshaw.
Arthur - Apple
the main character of all fruits. if anyone thinks of a fruit it’s probably going to be an apple. 90% chance, and arthur is most likely going to be the first person you think of in terms of story game protagonists.
Bill - PawPaw
according to google, most forgotten fruit. bill is most forgotten in terms of gang members, and is always being pushed aside, ignored, and looked down upon.
Charles - Banana
one of many fruits that can adapt to almost anywhere. also thrives on its own just as well as it thrives in groups. Charles only joined the gang because of their code, but he could’ve left easily at any time and be just fine, as well as he can adapt to anywhere, and quickly figures out the animals and plants, which ones to eat and not to eat.
Dutch - Papaya
named “father of all fruits.” dutch is the father of the gang, along with being the leader/king of the game. a homophone for “father came,” as its name came from a compound word, “papa” which means father, “aya” which in hindi, means “to come in the past tense.”
Davey - Ansualt Pear
a fruit that has been extinct for decades. davey unfortunately became extinct in chapter 1’s cutscene.
Grimshaw - Mangosteen
dubbed “queen of all fruits.” grimshaw is the 1st most responsible in camp, as she has people doing the cleaning, and managing the cooking, as well as bickering arthur to donate (which i did), and as a queen is often responsible/loyal to her kingdom, grimshaw was loyal to dutch since she joined, and even when she died.
Hosea - Passionfruit
2nd longest lasting fruit, as apple is the longest lasting. Hosea was the 2nd member of the gang, and was the oldest, plus the longest living (before chapter 4 events).
Jack - Tayberry
hybrid fruit between raspberry and blackberry. raspberry and blackberries are similar, almost the same as each other. all though john and abigail seem to come from different backgrounds, they are both in some ways similar. they both had to do things to survive, and they both want the best for jack.
Javier - Grape
mostly comes in bunches, and can’t exactly thrive on its own without their bunch. javier was best with the gang, and after he was not mentally okay, and was on the run more than he was in the gang.
Jenny - Pineapple
described as “the friendship fruit,” and jenny had liked many activities, and shared common interests with other gang members, causing her to become a friend to many members.
John - Strychnine
most toxic fruit, extremely bitter and poisonous. john in rdr2 wasn’t exactly like this, but in rdr1 he was almost exactly like this. he would’ve done anything for his family (not including uncle), and was bitter to almost everyone he encountered before reuniting with his family. whoever would encounter john and get on his bad side would eventually end up dying, from either him or his son.
Kieran - Durian
most hate it, and kieran was hated/outcasted from the van der linde gang, and not even jack would take a liking to him, as he was previously an o’driscoll.
Karen - Ackee
the ackee is mostly favored for its looks, but it actually tastes horrible. Karen is liked mostly for her appearance, like her chest area or her body, but she has a much deeper personality other than her looks. Karen is considerate of others (the other women) but still isn’t afraid to use her abilities. (cutscenes with molly o’shea, especially the one where she punches her.)
Lenny - Orange
one of the most liked fruits, and is an amazing one. whenever someone names fruits, they will most certainly name orange. lenny is a great character in rdr2, and is one of the best.
Mac - Australian Finger Lime
the australian finger lime is widely unheard of, and most people haven’t seen the look of it. everyone but the rdr2 character designers have never seen mac. his look is unknown to everyone who didn’t work on rdr2.
Mary - Beth - Cocoa Beans
cocoa beans are versatile, but they’re most known for chocolate. Mary-beth can and has done multiple different things in her life, but she is most known for her love of books and writing.
Micah - Honeydew
arguably the worst fruit. don’t know how people can ever like it. just like micah bell is the worst character.
Molly - Densuke Watermelon
one of the fanciest fruits, but is still a melon. just like the other ones, just puts on a fake facade that they’re expensive. molly o’shea does that for dutch, and the densuke does it for money and fame.
Pearson - Rhubarb
goes well with stews, but doesn’t have much versatility. Pearson doesn’t know how to cook much else but stew.
Reverend - Coconut
coconut is one the fruits that represent god, and reverend has always led a god-driven life, even with all his sins.
Sadie - Pomegranate
pomegranate is split open, and bleeds out, and is never the same without its insides/seeds. sadie was never the same without jake, and will never be.
Sean - Cox’s Orange Pippin
the orange pippin represents ireland, and is irelands national fruit. sean comes from ireland, and is very prideful about his heritage.
Strauss - Yubari King Melon
the king melon is the most expensive fruit in the world, and strauss values himself above getting the debts, which caused arthur to have TB.
Trelawny - Jackfruit
jackfruits are rare to discover in certain places, and trelawny only appears when he has a lead, or when he has to travel back to the gang.
Tilly - Peaches
little sister of apples, as well as dating back to 6000 bc. tilly is seen as a sister figure to arthur/john, and she’s one of the first gang members to join.
Uncle - Cempedak
2nd worst smelling fruit, but tastes good. Uncle is notorious for smelling bad (plus being lazy and lumbago), but he has some positive personality traits.

The other day I was rewatching The Sandman with a friend and as I was watching Roderick Burgess summon Dream, I had a theory. In Overture, Dream talks about the two old gods that overpowered him in the Dreaming, imprisoned him, and then declared themselves the lords of the Dreaming.
Now, in the spell that Roderick Burgess uses to summon Dream, he calls upon the names of "the old Lords" and then names a bunch of random names that don't seem to ever be relevant to anything other than Dream being summoned by Burgess.
My theory is that Burgess, completely unknowingly, calls upon the long dead gods that had once imprisoned Dream to once again imprison Dream.
I got a lot of the information on these deities from this article which I found rather interesting to read, with some further google searching for some more information
Namtar is an ancient Mesopotamian god of death and disease and also means "fate" in Sumerian
Allatu is the Sumerian goddess of the underworld
Morax is a president of Hell, and it's worth noting that he's depicted as either having the head of a bull with the body of a man or the body of a bull and the head of a man
Naberius is a Marquis of Hell and is basically an equivalent of Cerberus, so is often depicted as having three dog heads, though he's also depicted as a raven
Klesh I cannot seem to find a deity that this figure was based off of, but in Hindi it means tribulation, so whatever this deity is, it's probably not a friendly one, it also means snake in Navajo
Vepar is a duke of Hell and is often shown as a mermaid, he controls water and can make ghost-ships appear
Maymon is the King of the spirits of Saturn, he can create snow and ice, and is associated with the direction north
Ashema-Deva I can't seem to find anything about, however Aeshma is a Zoroastrian demon of wrath
Maborym I cannot find anything about
Horvendile is the name of a character from the story that Shakespeare took a lot of inspiration for Hamlet from, it is also spelled as Ørvendil. Yet another spelling is Aurvandill, who is a figure from old Norse mythology. The name seems to mean something along the lines of "rising light" or "morning star"
So in summary, most or all of these figures are from various mythologies, but which ones may have been the ones that imprisoned Dream the first time?
I think that one of them is probably Morax, mostly because he is often depicted as a bull, which is probably the closest thing that someone can say that one of the gods shown in Overture looks like (though the god that attacked had both horns and tusks, which I'm not sure there is an animal with both horns and tusks, if there is please tell me).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second one, the one the helm was crafted from, is a bit more difficult because none of these figures from mythologies look even remotely similar to the helm (I guess that makes sense considering the design for the helm came from gas masks rather than a creature from mythology). But I suspect that it would be one of the names that I can't find any information on, so probably Klesh, Ashema-Deva (if we're assuming that this is a different deity than Aeshma), or Maborym.
Now from a symbolism perspective, Dream crafted the helm as a reminder to himself of his failure, but then later triumph. The helm is sort of an emotional support for him and a reminder of what he is capable of and a reminder of what he has at stake at all times. So I think to say that the helm is a symbol of tribulation is fair. Therefore, my best guess as to who the helm was crafted from, is Klesh.
So my running theory is that the Dreaming was invaded by Morax and Klesh. Now Roderick Burgess calling upon them probably wouldn't have done much to summon Dream because they're long dead, however, Dream is the Prince of Stories, so the fact that it would be poetic for his second captor to call upon his first captors to aid in capturing Dream (although he wanted Death), would make some sense.
Of course, this whole rabbit hole could be just that: a rabbit hole. but I think it's a plausible and interesting theory and definitely adds some complexity to Dream's relationship with his own helm.

@drelmurn
Also, warning to neopagans: This one is not for you. I try to be polite and respectful about neopaganism and y'all do some cool stuff, but this is specifically complaining about things neopagans do. So if that's your jam, this is a good place to stop reading.
So the thing is, for assorted reasons we don't have any writing from actual Norse pagans. There's archaeological records and what you divine (ha) from those, but everyone serious is telling you that we cannot have any real idea of what these religious practices look like. There were groves; there were figurines of gods which had their own spaces; it seems likely that rich/powerful people were also priests; there were sacrifices of beasts and animals, and some really freaking creepy funeral rites.
(Part of the volcano rant is about how prior to the volcanic eruptions there is sun symbolism in the archaeological record, and afterward, none. Probably related to the whole "ash blocking out the sun in the Arctic Circle for three years straight, leading to the deaths of 40-60% of the population" thing. So we have that sort of record too.)
And I'm also going to preface with how when I took a bellydancing class the instructor was careful to tell us that she learned from someone who learned from someone from the regions this was practiced, so we were at best three removes from the culture. When we're talking about Norse paganism, we are a thousand years removed from the culture. Put a generation at 20 years, that is 50 generations. If we want to be super generous and assume that every other generation some grandparent taught their grandchild the secret rituals they remembered, we are still 25 removes from a living culture.
Nothing has actually survived.
But, you say, what about the Eddas? Those were written down in the medieval period. Those are contemporary.
Nope! Those were written by Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241). He's an Icelander. Iceland was officially Christianized in the year 1000, it's very easy to remember. Snorri was born 179 years after Christianity got enough of a grip to be enshrouded in law. I've been reading the Grágás (early law book, ~1260) and it has an initial section specifically on Christianity, with the punishments for things like men not knowing the words to baptize a child, much less daring to fast incorrectly. These people were not pagan. Snorri was writing down what he could guess from very old stories, and he begins by saying the gods were Asians from Troy.
There's just a period in medieval Europe when paganism was considered cool, and so everybody wanted their own pagans, and they tried to resurrect the concepts and everybody kind of suspiciously came up with the same general kind of paganism, which is an artifact both of like. How monotheists think about polytheism, and of wanting to keep the cool elements from what they heard from their friend in France or wherever. It's like how everybody knows that vampires can't be seen in mirrors.
So that brings us to my archnemesis Stephen Flowers, who would really prefer I called him Edred Thorsson.
Mr. Flowers originally decided to research runes "after I audibly 'heard' the sound 'RUNA' on a summer day in 1974." Two years later, in 1976, he completed his handbook of rune magic, which he assures you remains largely unchanged in this its third edition, because he uh spiritually inherited everything there was to know about runes in two years. He believes the Norse pagan "ancestors never died but rather were reborn, generation after generation, always keeping their secrets with them - until now, they are us" because who doesn't love some Hindi wheel of reincarnation in their Norse paganism.
So this sort of reincarnation/divine inspiration is one way he gives himself legitimacy. The next is by judicious use of Nazis, because Norse stuff has always had a problem with Nazism. Mr. Flowers, rather than disavowing Nazism in his introduction, goes with "Indeed, the Nazis made use of the runic forms in their most external aspects, akin to what we might call 'branding' today. The beginning rune vitki* of today may take some strange comfort from the fact that the runes did continu to show themselves to be such potent symbols in the twentieth century!"
He will grant that "the Germanic spirit itself was not at the heart of this 'bureaucratic blasphemy,' but rather it was a sort of pseudo-Christian messianic Manicheanism that owned the soul of the Nazi party." Far removed from the true religion Flowers intends to invent! He, after all, intends to create "a system as free as possible from any Judeo-Christian influence" with the classic random flinging of the Judeo- prefix in to seem more, I don't know, cosmopolitan, without showing any sign of having done the slightest research on Judaism and whether it might apply to his construct religion.
*Flowers proposes vitki as a practitioner of runic magic, which he refers to as galdrar. I have been sufficiently wrong often enough not to argue with him on this point; I will say only that there are many words for magic, and for all I know galdr (nominative singular) does refer to runic magic. I have not seen the word vitki elsewhere as yet.
I am probably getting overly het up about Stephen Flowers; I am prone to doing so. He concludes his introduction as follows:
Too long has the Westerner suffered "bearing the cross of alien fruits." They have had their chance and have failed time and again in their impotent effort to satisfy the depths of the IndoEuropean soil. Their aeon has come to an end; the time is ripe for a reemergence of the wisdom of the Eriloz (the vitki). The breakthrough of holy power must take place within the soul of each individual - and it is in this hope that this work has been wrought.
Which just. Having established the word vitki we're now going to add another cool foreign word for the same thing?? Westerners have suffered bearing the cross of Christianity?? It has failed to satisfy the depths of the IndoEuropean - look, it's just a list of white supremacist dogwhistles, okay. And I could be wrong about that, because I don't know white supremacist dogwhistles, but it sure reads like that to me!
I have a friend who is a neo-pagan and is studying Egyptian magic. Apparently the Egyptian practitioners wrote their things down. Which is cool and great, they had a writing system and they were using it, I know nothing about that and have nothing to say about it. She also says a lot of pagan practices are invented wholecloth, which is true and great. It's the "we are reviving a practice that has simply lain dormant for a thousand years until we arrived to accept this unbroken tradition" that drives me wild.
Anyway the key concepts include: appealing to some sense of an ancient unbroken tradition, which should appeal to you specifically because you are special in [spiritual and/or racial trait], and you can reject [practice that many people have been hurt by] because your special nature was reaching out to this the whole time. Sprinkle in appropriate symbols. Use some cool foreign-sounding words. Throw a minority under the bus if at all possible.

✨I ranked all the indian stuff I watched in 2023✨
For context, this July I finally gave in to my decade-old urge and dove head first into indian culture. It's been nothing short of phenomenal. The more people I meet, the more foods I try, the more music I listen to, the more Hindi I learn, the more I fall in love with India.
Although I became more of a TV serial person, eventually, I gave in to the movies as well.
So here's everything I watched, ranked from worst to best.
(I'm sorry in advance)
Tumblr media
10. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani
This movie is useless, I'm so sorry. Somehow, it fooled me into thinking Naina was the main character, then the whole thing became about Bunny and I was so confused, who was I supposed to care about anyway? Can't complain though, Naina is a boring and uncharismatic cliché, I couldn't care less about her, had she disappeared midway into the story, I would've been thankful. Avi, Bunny, and Aditi, on the other hand, are loveable characters that deserved to be in a better movie — especially Aditi, I liked her so much. Too bad the movie seems to be about absolutely nothing. There was a message, I think, but it felt so shallow it didn't even matter to me, there was no actual relevance, no lesson, no impact, nothing. Maybe I'm stupid, but this movie is a drag. And the soundtrack SUCKS, Ilahi is the only good song in it.
2.8/10
Tumblr media
9. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2
The very first Bollywood movie I've ever watched. I wanted to like it so bad, it makes me sad that I didn't. Is it a comedy? A horror story? A dramatic murder mystery? Somehow, it's all of these and none at the same time, it can't decide on a tone to save its life, not even the humor can decide on what exactly it wants to be (most of it is just bad). The main couple has negative chemistry, their romance is so bland it's almost funny. Ruhan carries the whole movie on his back and is the only character with enough charisma to make me care, I honestly love this guy. His scene where he pretends to be possessed is incredible, and Tabu as Anjulika was great too. The plot twist was really nice, possibly the only good thing about the whole story, but then the movie ends so abruptly and on such a heavy note that it almost made me sick when the upbeat theme song started playing immediately after. This movie could not read the room, everything about it throws me off.
4/10
Tumblr media
8. Jab We Met
Aditya is a dream, Geet is kind of a nightmare. I have nothing against characters that are lively, optimistic, and cheery, but they have to be bearable, she was just way too much for me. I loved Aditya's character development, it was fun and endearing to watch. The movie itself is not bad, just overrated. Nagada Nagada slaps though.
6/10
Tumblr media
7. War
I wanted to love this movie just as much as it wanted to have a good twist. We both failed. Underestimating the audience's intelligence is one thing, but toying with us and making us feel like fools for the sake of a “big reveal” is something else. And no, it wasn't worth it. It wanted to be surprising, but it was just frustrating, shocking for all the wrong reasons. The action was fire though, no complaints there, and I loved the relationship dynamic between Kabir and Khalid, I would watch 11 seasons of those two going on missions with their team and fighting together, their chemistry is so good, I enjoyed every second of their scenes.
6.4/10
Tumblr media
6. Arjun: The Warrior Prince
As a Mahabharat fan, I had hopes, but that's on me. Loved the way the story was presented to the audience, simple but brilliant. Shaheer Sheikh's Brihannala altered my brain chemistry, and I was elated to see her again. The animation was gorgeous, that goes without saying. I just hated how it ended right before the war, right where Arjun has some of his best moments, and hated even more how they practically erased Krishna from the story. At least they made him dark skinned this time.
6.7/10
Tumblr media
5. My Name is Khan
Had this been based on a true story, I would've been the biggest fan of this movie to ever exist, I am a sucker for movies based on real life stories. Still, despite the disappointment of finding out this whole thing — as good as it was — was fictional, I see it as a touching, lovely, honest, and relevant story that kept me interested and broadened my horizons. Say whatever you want about allistic actors playing autistic characters, Shah Rukh Khan sold the heck out of this character and I bought it like the big neurodivergent fool that I am. I see a neurodivergent character onscreen, I am immediately on-board and loving them despite all their scripted flaws because “they're just like me fr”. "Marry me", indeed.
7/10
Tumblr media
4. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani
Is it innovative and groundbreaking? No, but it is so much fun. It's deep and honest enough, charismatic and funny enough, it's just good entertainment with a good message. I expected nothing to be honest, either way, the story just kept getting better? The dynamics kept getting deeper and more complex? Wait a minute, this was actually good! I went in for the soundtrack — I'm obssessed with Dhindhora Baje Re — but I stayed for everything else. I laughed out loud many times, I shed some tears, I rooted, man, this movie made me feel actual things! What a lovely surprise.
7.9/10
Tumblr media
3. The Railway Men
I went into it with such high hopes. Some of them were met, but part of me was left unsatisfied. As I said before, real stories are my favorite, but the way this show was presented feels too much like fiction. Good fiction, but still. And I know it’s not fiction. I am aware that many creative liberties were taken, and I'm not against them, at all, but the thing is: I could see them, I knew they were there. When I watched HBO’s Chernobyl, I was fully convinced that everything that was presented in the show was reality, exactly how it had happened, and I doubted nothing. I was shocked when they revealed that Ulana Khomyuk was a character created to represent many scientists that were involved in the incident. I had eaten her up, and I still can't believe she wasn't a real person. The Railway Men feels like the opposite of this, most of it feels like a creative liberty, very little reads as a real event, a real interaction, or a real person. I doubted a lot of what I saw, and had to do some research to fully understand what exactly had been real. But like I said, it was still good. I found myself caring deeply for each and every character, no matter how minor, I deeply empathized with their pain, rooted for them, cried with them, cried for them. It's heartbreaking, gut wrenching, revolting, yet it still manages to be inspiring. Why I never learned about Bhopal before watching this show is beyond me, but at any rate, I will be recommending this show to everyone I know.
8.1/10
Tumblr media
2. Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva
I will defend this movie's honor, I don't even care. I loved it so much that I made my mom watch it with me the next day, and she loved it. The dialogue is cringy, yes, unbearably so, some lines make my skin crawl. But COME ON, the plot is great, the concept is creative, the visual effects are wonderful, the soundtrack is divine —Mohan is dreamy— hear me out, I was hooked, on board, immersed, you name it. This movie made me feel so excited, I felt like a 7-year-old watching a super hero movie and wanting to have cool powers just like those, I honestly can't remember the last time a movie made me feel this energetic. Do I understand why Shiva and Isha were so deeply in love despite having met each other a week ago? No, but I was still rooting for them. Do I understand why sometimes people yell out the Astra’s powers in order to activate them like the Power Rangers? No, neither do I vibe with it, but do you think it mattered? The next moments were so freaking cool that I completely forgot what I wanted to complain about. (Oh, and Saurav Gurjar was in it! I gasped so loud when I saw him on screen, and playing a villain no less!) I was genuinely sad when it ended, I would've watched three more hours of that, despite the terribly written lines. I will fight for this movie and forgive every bad line of dialogue if it kills me.
8.7/10
Tumblr media
1. Mahabharat (2013)
In case you haven't noticed, I am absolutely obssessed with Mahabharat. Initially, I’d decided to face the 267 episodes of this show because watching stuff in your target language is a good way to learn (also, that Krishna guy was very easy on the eyes, looking at him a bit more surely wouldn't hurt). It took me a few episodes to really get into the story, but once I did, oh boy, I was so hooked on the plot I even forgot about the language (although I did learn some words from it). The thing about this show, other than the freaking superb plot and phenomenal cast, are the characters. They all made me feel something. And that's the thing with characters, I believe, they don't necessarily have to be good or bad, morally speaking, they have to be well-written and entertaining, they have to make you feel things, positive or negative. Shakuni, a villain, was freaking great because of how good he was at being bad. And the good guys, like the Pandavas, weren't just good, that'd be boring, they were also charismatic, unique, funny, inspiring, and sometimes morally grey, which made them even more interesting, even more human. Watching them get in conflict with their morals when things got dark was insane. Even when they messed up —I'm looking at you Dharmraj— I still wanted to see them win. They felt like family, I watched them grow, I felt so close to them that their struggles and victories felt like my own. “My boys”, I call them. Mahabharat is my Roman Empire, man, I could talk about this show for HOURS. Anyway, this became my favorite show of all time and I'm so glad I didn't let the number of episodes scare me away. (And yes, I am still very much in love with Saurabh Raaj’s Krishna, he is probably one of my favorite characters ever, my heart raced when I first saw him and it still does to this day, BYE)
9/10
Oh, this ended up being a Top 10. Nice.
I both thank you and applaud you for reaching the end of this ramble that is ultimately just a result of my obsession with making lists and ranking literally everything. And also my admiration for indian culture.
I would've included Porus and Chandragupta Maurya but I'm not yet finished watching them, but I thought I should say: I am liking them a lot.
What do you people think I should watch next year? Recommendations are welcome!
✨🇮🇳 ✨

kavetham storyboard for an animatic. i'm going to story board the whole song (eventually), but how much I animate is largely dependent on how hard animation is (the words of a woman who's never animated before)
now my native language (as in the one my parents speak) is tamil not hindi however being from a traditional indian family with a desire for u to be able to fit in India if we ever wanna go back means they tried to teach you some hindi so one of these days i'll explain the animatic with a shitty translation. (if you're a hindi speaker lemme know how well the animatic fits.
this is the song btw

made in loving memory of my parents. yes, really. my parents saw these two while I was playing Kaveh's hangout and thought they were married. I told them China hated gay people, they said "CLEARLY NOT" make of that what you will...

Top 10 Episodes From The 1979 Anime That Every Doraemon Fan Must Watch
many people were introduced to this franchise by the 2005 anime, however the previous series is worth watching as well if you wanna get the full doraemon experience! considering it has nearly 1800 episodes and has lasted for 26 years (1979-2005), one might not know where to start from, so here's a list of the best episodes from the series, if you're interested in watching it!
disclaimer: if you don't speak japanese, italian or hindi it's gonna be a bit harder to watch the 1979 series, as these three languages have the most episodes in dub. i have watched all these in italian on youtube so if you want to know the italian title of any of these episodes because you couldn't find it in another language feel free to ask!
p.s. every ōyama doraemon episode mentioned in my old post titled my favorite episodes that are centered around suneo could easily make it into this list but since i don't wanna be repetitive i won't include them in this post.
10. Lovey Dovey Umbrella
Tumblr media
あいあいガサ (#1328), 1994
in which nobita gets jealous after seeing shizuka and dekisugi walking back home while standing under the same umbrella, so doraemon gives him an umbrella that will make shizuka fall in love with him, if he manages to make her stand under it while he's holding it. obviously something goes wrong and that's what makes this episode fun to watch for me as i'm not the biggest fan of these gadgets that manipulate one's feelings.
9. Ichiyadzuke / Last-Minute Cramming (?)
Tumblr media
いちやづけ (1993), #1262
uncertain about the english translation of the title (as the one i found on the wiki, last-minute cramming, seems very unrelated to the plot and the used gadget) but i watched it in italian and it's called la verifica di matematica (the math test). with that being said, you need to know that i watch this episode before every math test for good luck (it never works but it's my fault, not doraemon's), so of course this episode had to make it into my top 10! as you can guess, doraemon lends nobita a gadget that can help him learn stuff without any effort, and when the teacher announces a math test, gian and suneo will do anything to convince nobita to share said gadget with them.
8. Confidence Machine
Tumblr media
自信ぐらつ機 (1985), #807
after hearing gian boast about his muscles and strength and suneo brag about his wealth, beauty and intelligence, nobita is fed up with their conceitedness so he borrows a gadget to lower their self-esteem; although the artstyle is more polished in the 90s and early 2000s, i think the funniest stories were mostly in the 80s. the following 15 years also have amazing episodes, don't get me wrong! the entirety of ōyama doraemon is truly a work of art and is very special to me, especially the early 2000s episodes which i grew up with.
7. Recollection Hammer
Tumblr media
思い出しトンカチ (1995), #1359
the ending is what makes this episode so good; recollection hammer is useful if you forgot something and would like to remember: all you need to do is tap on your head with the hammer while you think about what you're wondering and you'll instantly recollect your memories. first doraemon uses it to help nobita's father then gian tells nobita that he would like to remember a certain girl he was friends with during preschool, but for some reason nobita refuses to and runs away.
6. I Am Nobiko
Tumblr media
わたし、のび子よ (1996), #1402
nobita is absolutely convinced that girls have it easier and asks doraemon to make him become one. to prove him wrong he accepts his request and makes him use the what if phone booth. the next day at school everything seems to go well as nobita expected, until... well you'll have to watch the episode to find out!
5. The Generator Of Great Performances
Tumblr media
メー演機 (2002), #1691
worried and envious that dekisugi might get the role of the prince in the cinderella school play, nobita asks doraemon to make him become a great actor and thus get the role. at his audition he accidentally recites the lines of both the prince and cinderella, which will have its consequences; i'm surprised this is the only 2000s episode i could think of but maybe it's because the rest are on my other post.
4. Mind Reading Helmet
Tumblr media
さとるヘルメット (1986), #854
in which doraemon lends nobita a helmet that lets him read people's minds so he knows when gian is about to beat him up; no spoilers but this is one of those episodes that shows his kind and unselfish side and it made me cry, like i genuinely felt bad for him.
3. Boygirl
Tumblr media
オトコンナ (1993), #1215
one of the most important doraemon episodes and it blows my mind that a kids show would deal with the topic of gender roles in the early 90s (i don't think i need to remind you that japan isn't the most left wing country in the world). and for once it isn't played for laughs like in i am nobiko or in any episode where someone is made fun of for their interests or the way they act, because there's an actual scene where nobita discusses his thoughts and has a serious conversation with doraemon, trying to understand why certain things are considered masculine or feminine.
sure, the episode still doesn't deal with this topic in the most perfect way, for example after switching the gender roles, nobita and doraemon are disappointed at women being less kind and laugh at men for being more sensitive, so are they really above the kids who laughed at nobita for preferring indoor hobbies over outdoors sports?
we might as well talk about how nobita himself laughed at someone else *cough cough* suneo *cough cough* for the same reasons and more than once in other occasions, but with thousands of episodes it's hard to make them all coherent with each other so i'll give them a pass.
p.s. i don't agree with the gender stereotypes that the episode shows, for example after using the gadget on everyone, i don't think tamako's personality changed at all, she simply started smoking and is reading a newspaper but she was already strict.
2. Fellowship Badge
Tumblr media
なかまバッチ (1987), #944
nobita is upset that he doesn't have a friendship like shizuka and dekisugi's or suneo and gian's (especially after dekisugi excluded him from their studying session and gian beat him up because he thought he was bothering suneo), so doraemon gives him matching badgets, and the person who wears must come save you everytime you need it and viceversa.
1. Drunken Lid
Tumblr media
ホンワカキャップ (1984), #752
nobita wants to get drunk like his dad to forget the misfortunes of life but since he's too young to drink alcohol, doraemon gives him a bottle cap that can turn your drink into something that has the same effects as an alcoholic beverage without alcohol consumption; suneo is the absolute protagonist of this episode without the story being centered around him, bravo! needless to say that this is the most controversial episode of doraemon of all time and it probably won't get a remake in the 2005 anime.

OH EM GEE TELL ME ALL YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT ATSV :3
OF COURSE, atsv spoilers obviously
well first off, i really loved the scenes with the spiderpeople (gwen and miles really) and their parents, you were clearly able to see the love, but also the stress that is present in the relationships because of the kids not being able to tell who they are
that being said, rio's and miles' scene on the rooftop was so sweet and idk i really loved everything about it. i believe that in the next movie that he'll tell them about being spiderman, and i don't think it'll go as horribly as he may think
also miles is literally my favorite protagonist ever, he's the sweetest ever and so kind and he's so friendly (the nervous dance before meeting miguel and also calling him 'Tío') and he's so caring and he desperately wants to help whoever he can. if he is even sad for one second i will somehow beam myself into whatever universe and fight idc.
also for the family scenes, those were very relatable, i literally had my handss across my mouth when miles said whatever, i was like "no wayyyy" and also i cringed every time gwen said their first names, im sorry
i also adored the spiderpeople we met in the last movie and i adored the spiderpeople we met in this movie. i ofc loved seeing gwen and peter b (who reminds me a lot of my uni freshman math prof, especially with his child who was soooo cute) but it hurt when miles asked them about them visiting and during peter b's and miles' talk and the location thingy went off.
i also loved seeing peni, peter porker, and spidernoir in the end too, i missed them so much.
as for the new spiderpeople, ahhh they were the best!!! hobie's literally my bff idc (i can overlook the british for 1. ONE man). i also adored pavitr (i could sort of understand the hindi so win for me!!!) and margo was literally sooo cool.
jess and miguel were really cool and i really liked them as characters. as for miguel, i can sort of see where he's coming from (not that i like it but...), i liked his story and im really interested to see what's going to happen in the next movie for him, lowkey reminds me of a wet cat but whateverrr
i want to see jess moreee i really loved her!!!
i really liked how the spidersociety as a whole was designed, it was just a nice nod to everyone's abilities and what we know as the spiderverse as a whole.
im glad that gwen's dad is not a cop anymore. very glad.
i am also very stressed for jeff, i don't want him to die.
i am excited for the family scenes in the next movie, they will make me cry im sure.
the twist that he wasn't in his universe was so well done, i was literally shocked, but it made sense seeing the trains falling and all when he was going to his house.
also the ending!!! i'm really excited for what's going to happen in the next movie (also very stressed but i digress) it's really interesting to me to see the hero of the story face off against a different version of himself who is not so much that.
overall, i loved the plot, i am so excited for the next movie, and the animation was literally gorgeous, i loved all the styles and the different techniques and literally everything.
this movie was amazing!!!

Note
what are your top favoritest movies you've watched for the first time this year (whether they were released this year or you're catching them late)?
This is tough because my memory is shot right now but I WILL TRY!!!
Joy Ride--extremely fun but also extremely emotional (I cried) and I'm soooorrryyyy but but while the sex scenes were all very funny, the scene where the one basketball player was going down on intrepid heroine Ashley Park after whispering shit in her ear in Hindi and then it pans to the other basketball player leaning against the wall and translating for him like "he wants to make you come so hard" or whatever??? One of the standout moments in cinema of the past decade let's talk about it
Sanctuary--one of the best romantic comedies ever maybe, a total delight, the performances were amazing, the love story made total sense despite it basically being a bottle episode of a movie; I loved the humor and the depiction of their D/s dynamic was SO GOOD, which is so hard to find onscreen especially. Margaret Qualley is kind of a nepo baby queen I fear; the scene in the beginning where she delivers the dialogue he asked accurately, but you know from seeing his "script" that he'd instructed her to say it in a mean way and she says it in this open, vulnerable way? And it's your first indicator that she's fallen in love for real???? DUDE. CINEMA.
The Little Mermaid--such a pleasant surprise, and this is why you give shit a chance; I really expected to hate this but I loved it. I have some minor quibbles, but the movie is great, Halle is AMAZING in it, Melissa is fabulous, Jonah was a shockingly good Prince Eric. Was stunned by the emphasis on the love story, tbh, and the way Ariel and Eric play out is a testament to the importance of good chemistry.
Nimona--ugh, got my whole heart. I watched this the first time with my pink-haired, trans NB sibling and it was such a special experience. On top of the allegories in the story, it's also just an amazing found family movie, and I adore the conflict in Ambrosius and his bitter exes energy with Ballister and how EXPLICITLY CANON it all is. Also, really loved the animation style too.
M3gan--never has my mom been so excited to see a movie, but I actually ended up loving it because you know what we need in this day and age?? More absurdist, over the top, high camp cinema. That's all I want. The Titanium moment remains MAGIC to me.
