The Frozen Shore is a stretch of coastline that sits on the Bay of Ice, beyond the Wall. 

The men of The Frozen Shore have queer names, as they name themselves after beasts of the region, while their women clad themselves in sealskins.   They employ chariots made of walrus bone, pulled by dogs as large as direwolves, as transport, and also breed reindeer.    Huts of ice are used by some inhabitants of the Frozen Shore, and while most free folk worship the old gods, some coastal tribes worship gods of snow and ice.

There are at least two factions of them, one wearing antlers on their hats and others wearing walrus tusks and the two sorts do not get along with each other.   Wildlings from this area have oft raided the Westerosi Bear Island, and prior to Mance Rayder negotiating peace, the men of the Frozen Shore, particularly the walrus men, warred with the cannibal ice-river clans

Beyond the Wall

Oh my gosh, I loved this book. A huge part of that is Novak/Simon. He is such a likeable, happy person, he totally made this book for me. I am so glad he stuck with Daxia, and his corny jokes absolutely made my day.

Daxia needs to journey beyond the wall to find the fabled Maha Eyes - not only the incredible treasure, but the little known Maha Tongue as well, the only thing that can cure her sister. With her mother's dying wish, Daxia promised not to undertake the journey alone.

Except nobody is signing up to travel with a girl, even a girl who's managed to get all the quest permits needed - something in rare supply. Until Novak shows up last minute, claiming he has everything he needs to be able to help her. Even though that doesn't include a sword, or a sense of direction.

Some people aren't a fan of "journey" books, and yes, they are on a trail for a large portion of this book. It's a quest! Despite Daxia's worries that they're staying with the caravan for too long, since she has limited time to save her sister, Novak isn't worried. And things move along at what I felt was exactly the right pace. There was plenty of action along the way, just what you'd hope for in a quest!

I received an ARC through Booksirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Though I'm already putting this on my mom's list for her High School library, and when it arrives I plan to hijack things and make a little stand to draw some attention, because I think so many people will love taking a chance with Daxia and her journey. Plus, have I mentioned Novak?

BACKGROUND

I grew up on the streets of Greenbough alone, orphaned, and poor. I had no one to watch over me or to provide for me, so I learned to provide for myself. I fought fiercely over food and kept a constant watch out for other desperate souls who might steal from me.

I slept on rooftops and in alleyways, exposed to the elements, and endured sickness without the advantage of medicine or a place to recuperate. I've survived despite all odds, and did so through strange powers that I have no recollection of obtaining.

Magic served me well, allowing me to protect myself and claim resources that would otherwise be out of my reach. However, the magic grew and became uncontrollable, eventually attacking a travelling band of adventurers.

One of their party, Dulcimer Silverchair, attacked and severely wounded me. I would be dead if not for Jemma Rex, their witch companion who adopted me and offered to train me to control my magic. I currently work for the betterment of Western Andros, assisting with magical requests and calls for adventurers through the guild founded by Antorn.
