Book: 8.5/9?? (aka a series companion)

Summary: Unlocked is a companion to the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, written between book 8 and 9. Not only does Messenger continue from book 8’s devastating cliff hanger, but she goes on to reveal secrets and intricate details about the Lost Cities world and the series’s beloved characters.

Review: To start off this review, I’d like to applaud Messenger’s complex and detailed world building skills. The amount of detail put into the Lost Cities universe is immense, thrilling, and at times overwhelming. I couldn’t help but be in awe of the creativity and dedication it takes to build such a fantastic fictional world. Another addition I liked about book 8.5 was the perspective switch between Sophie and Keefe. The additional set of eyes navigating the story gave us more insight into Keefe’s new circumstances, as well as the warring sides of the love triangle. Here was my thought process (that no one asked for) on the love triangle as I was reading: *dump Fitz because he’s being trash rn. Wait no I’ve always like Fitz and he can still grow as a person. Dump Keefe because he has too many mommy issues and is problematic. Wait no Keefe seems to care more about Sophie than Fitz. But I also haven’t seen Fitz’s POV so it’s not fair to judge. They’re both being problematic ew no.* As a final note, don’t read this book until you’ve read all 8 books if you’re avoiding spoilers. Or do what you want, I don’t make the rules. I liked this book for the most part, and some of the world building stuff was cool, and some seemed unnecessary. Over all it was a decently quick read.
