[The Gaffer, cont.] “ ‘But my lad Sam will know more about that. He’s in and out of Bag End. Crazy about stories of the old days, he is, and he listens to all Mr. Bilbo’s tales. Mr. Bilbo has learned him his letters – meaning no harm, mark you, and I hope no harm will come of it.’ ” ~ The Fellowship of the Ring, A Long-expected Party (Art: “Where to Begin” by ayumi-lemura on DeviantArt)

“You are not the hobbit that you once were”
I could just imagine Bilbo in his late teens reading outside, thinking about adventures but never getting the courage to actually go on one himself 🌾🍃
Not my usual style but I was looking to go out of my comfort zone

bilbo: hey, has thorin been acting different?
frodo: honestly, i haven't seen him. what did he say, when you asked him what's wrong?
bilbo: uh...
frodo: you didn't ask him? sheesh. it is a wonder you're not a landscaper, the way you beat around the bush.

Some days you want to work hard on your little fanfic epics, spending hours detangling the lore and timeline and plans for stories crying in the night for an update, and some days you're sick off your rocker and just hacking a lung out while haze-blinking into the horizon as you halt reading someone else's fic summary mid-first sentence to hard left turn into a very blurry but detailed daydream about the dwarves thinking Bilbo died in the Battle of the Five Armies while Bilbo--unaware of a king and his company upending their own mountain in a fit of grief as he heals among the Men or Elves--ends up in an awkward Race to Mordor with a Sauron he is barely aware of alongside his own ironic Nine, made up of himself, Gandalf, Bard, Legolas, Tauriel, and a trio of dwarves (Dís, Gimli, Gimli's mom) plus an unexpected favorite cousin (Falco Chubb-Baggins) who all broke off from the first convoy of Blue Mountain immigrants to Erebor to go along and protect Bilbo.
Place bets now on how Thorin & Company hear of their burglar's survival and latest insanity (highest bids placed on the remaining Blue Mountain travelers passing along word vs a smarmy message from Thranduil), how quickly they shake off their shrouds of mourning and royal pseudo-widowhood, and where exactly on the path between Erebor and Mount Doom they manage to catch up to and dog pile an unwitting Hobbit.
#apologies for the sick day rambles#bagginshield#story ideas#I need to master the art of authors who cover a whole adventure/story in flash scenes across a series of short fics#i'd get so many of these ideas down in at least written form if I could master that vs my impulse for 100K+ monsters#bilbo fellowship au#i'm normally not for a 'bilbo destroys the ring early' since i love lotr so much I don't want to derail it too much but~ when the ideas hit#still it feels wrong to have only 1 hobbit in a fellowship so I played off those falco chubb-baggins lore tidbits#and I headcanon falco as a young curly haired michael sheen. just cause I love him & think he looks a fair bit like martin freeman.#bonus points include early gigolas humor gimli mom lore dis-bilbo in-law bonding & bilbo carrying a dwobbit frodo the entire gd time#last 2 points leading to Thorin slamming into the action ready to scream at his Hobbit--only to get blindsided by screams from his sister#queue bilbo frozen in shock as 2 royal siblings-fight trying to quietly sneak off-only for 2 very different royal siblings to bodyslam him#and dis screaming at her sons to be more careful with the hobbit and when why comes out All Hell Breaks Loose because wtf bilbo? THORIN???#(and no bilbo did not know either when he left erebor—life just be rude like that)#and yes somewhere in that the ring and gollum and sauron and gandalf and probably saruman too. the wizard can handle the actual plot right?#and yeah eagles come in to save everyone at the last frustrating minute. because what's a tolkien quest without that in there?

sometimes it hits me that Bilbo, Frodo, Merry and Pippin are all heirs to their clans like ??? like i love the comedic exploration of Bilbo is the grandchild of Old took, the Thain, the effective "leader" for matters of the shire and tho not direct line really, it does makes Bilbo a prince to an extent if u wanna go royalty terms and thats funny to pair with Thorin and Company. But then u peel back and like,,, oh,,, sam is literally the only with the humble background and like its not that Frodo Merry and Pippin are just "nobles" and gentlehobbits no no, they're heirs to their clans, literally the two big shot families with some of the biggest smial (hell theyre two different regions entirely. we talk abt hobbit settlement as The Shire but Buckland is its own thing too!!) like the entire fellowship is just a bunch of princes and a gardener like guys *head in hands*

Lord-of-the-Rings-Event Week: Day 4: Frodo Baggins
Tumblr media
Welcome to my LotR charts event!
Date of creation: 19.05.2024
I included the tags "Infant/Baby Frodo Baggins" and "Child Frodo Baggins" despite both being subtags of "Young Frodo Baggins", meaning that the numbers for these two tags are included in the "Young Frodo Baggins" tag. But because there were so many hits for these two subtags, I included them.
I assume no guarantee or liability for the completeness, correctness and accuracy of this chart despite my best efforts.
Includes fanfictions in all languages available on Ao3, NOT English only.
More charts will follow. :)
Want to have a chart for different pairings, headcanons etc. in your favourite fandom? Send me an ask!

Bilbo: I saw a lawyer today.
Frodo: Why?
Bilbo: I’m putting together my last will and testament.
Lobelia: We'll miss you.
Frodo: Lobelia!
Bilbo: Don't worry. I'm not leaving her squat.

[The Gaffer, cont.] “ ‘Anyway: there was this Mr. Frodo left an orphan and stranded, as you might say, among those queer Bucklanders, being brought up anyhow in Brandy Hall. A regular warren, by all accounts. Old Master Gorbadoc never had fewer than a couple of hundred relations in the place. Mr. Bilbo never did a kinder deed than when he brought the lad back to live among decent folk.” ~ The Fellowship of the Ring, A Long-expected Party (Art: “Visit to Bag End” by KatChan00 on DeviantArt)

Can you do "Sharing a hot chocolate" with Bilbo and Frodo when Frodo was younger? (non-romantic)
WC: 456

This is my first countdown to Christmas from this ask game!
Notes: Frodo was 21 (11-12 in human years) when Bilbo adopted him, which would have made both Merry and Sam around 5 in human years. Frodo’s parents died when he was 12, around 6.5 in human years, but he lived in Buckland with relatives for 9 years before coming to stay with Bilbo.
Bilbo hummed a slow christmas carol to himself as he peeked out the window above his kitchen sink to see Frodo was supervising and leading Merry and Sam Gamgee in making snow angels outside. They stood on the new benches Gaffer Gamgee had just put up in the garden and fell gently into the two feet of snow in order to get perfect snow angels.
Bilbo turned back to the kitchen table which was covered in sugar cookie ingredients. He wanted his young nephew to have the best possible christmas this year, but he knew that Frodo was going to miss his Brandybuck relatives, this being his first Christmas without them. Thoughtfully, he started mixing up the cookie dough, making one batch of plain sugar cookies, which was his favorite, and one batch of peppermint sugar cookies, which were Frodo’s favorite. He rolled the peppermint cookies in red sugar and the plain ones in white sugar, and soon the cookies were in the oven and the hobbit hole smelled amazing.
Just after he took the last of the cookies out to cool, Bilbo glanced out the window again to see Frodo teaching the younger hobbits how to build snow-hobbits. The plump round constructions each had one of Frodo’s scarves around it’s neck, and glistening coal eyes. Bilbo decided to give the children a bit more time playing together while he made some hot chocolate.
“Frodo! Time to come inside lad!” Bilbo called a short while later, smiling as the younger two scampered off toward home. A minute later, Frodo walked into the kitchen, covered in snow, still bundled in his winter coat.
“I-i-is that pepp-p-p-permint I smell, U-u-uncle?” He was shivering so hard he could barely speak.
“Yes lad, I made our favorites, plain and peppermint sugar cookies, and hot cocoa too! Now go change into some warm, dry clothes and then come and we will have our afternoon tea together.”
A few minutes later, Frodo walked back into the room, just as Bilbo plopped a few marshmallows into two steaming mugs of hot chocolate, warmth radiating off the mugs. The cocoa and the milk swirled together in mesmerizing swirls as they mixed together.
As they sat, nibbling cookies and sipping hot cocoa, Bilbo smiled to himself. It would be hard for Frodo to live here, but at moments like these, he knew he would eventually acclimate to calling Bag End home.
