She knows, with increasing tangibility, that the path she’s on will end soon. She’ll leave nothing but a legacy, and that’s only if the human race is very, very lucky. Or, five conversations Laura Roslin had and one she didn't. Written for @galactica-bigbang

Me, writing BSG fic? In the year 2023? Yeah, it wasn't on my bingo card either. But that's been a theme this year, and this weekend marks the 20th anniversary of BSG's premiere, and...here we are. I have some feelings about this, which will go under the cut.

I joined Tumblr after the heyday of the BSG fandom, so many of you didn't know me during that time (others haven't gotten rid of me since). It was a long time ago! The last time I wrote Laura Roslin fic was in 2011. BSG was my last major fandom during the LiveJournal era, and after it came Doctor Who and the start of my Tumblr era, which has lasted much longer and been (mostly) a joy...

But nothing's ever been like BSG. The glory days of my time in that fandom are untouchable. No fandom, and very few other external factors, have impacted my life the way BSG did. If I hadn't begrudgingly watched this show that I was deeply skeptical about (I had never watched sci-fi and had no real interest, but a friend insisted) and loved it so much that I spent most of my free time talking about it with people on the internet...

I'd be a fundamentally different person. The trajectory of my life was altered with that first episode. And now, twenty years after it first aired and coming up on seventeen since I first watched it, there is virtually no part of my daily existence that isn't impacted by/the direct or indirect result of my decision to watch this show all those years ago.

This is because of the people, of course. The incredible cast that brought this show to life, and Mary McDonnell above all, who remains very dear to me in ways I never could have imagined way back when. Laura Roslin was and is one of the greatest characters ever created, and to this day remains my favorite of all time.

Much more, though, it's because of my friends.

Most of us haven't talked about BSG in years. It's not something that I even think about particularly often, not explicitly. It's foundational, not front and center. But BSG directly gave me so many of the people that matter most, and indirectly has led to so much more joy and chaos, and so many more people, through the ripples that are still making their way into my future.

I signed up for this challenge on a whim, thinking it would be fun to revisit BSG and Laura after all this time. Then life happened, aggressively, and finishing this ended up being much more challenging than I expected. I'm glad I did, though.

It's been a ride. I'm excited to see where it will take me next.

One thing i am loving writing in my Roslin x Adama fic is the strong friendship that is developing between Lee, Kara, Dee, Billy and EJ (Bill and Laura’s teenage daughter) I’m also enjoying writing Lee and Billy becoming brothers, even though i’m deciding on exactly what changes to make to sacrifice, it’s gonna hurt to write.

I briefly debated whether to go with my last 10 fics in the order I posted them on AO3, which are all BSG '04, or to go in the order of when I wrote them, in which case some of my Yuletide fics would sneak in. I went with the former because I'm too brain-tired right now to sort out when I wrote what. 😆

The Last Dance - My first BSG fic, written when I was waiting impatiently for season 2 to start.

First Glimpses - A not-especially-IC but still fun piece I wrote in response to a photo challenge.

Laura Roslin clicked along the corridors of Galactica, her stride even more determined than usual.

Gods' Gift - Sequel to "The Last Dance," equal portions of angst and heat spiced with a jot of humor.

"You did not." "I did." "You absolutely did not." "I assure you, Madam President, I did."

Zeus Descends, Hera Rises - My response to the demand for tent sex fic after "Home part 2" aired. 😏

It is a deeply moving and arresting moment, the stuff of which legends are made.

Doc Cottle's Day After - and a piece set right after ZDHR, pretty much all humor this time.

Major Cottle was pleased. Normally he had to go from reminding to ordering to badgering before people would grudgingly come to sickbay for the medical debriefing required of all personnel after exposure to a strange planetary environment.

Essence - As the tag says, "enough pining to build a two-story cabin"

He didn't ask. He surely knew, but he didn't ask.

Gossip - A trope-tastic romp capped with some of my choicest smut.

Lieutenant Louanne "Kat" Katraine was clearing the decks.

Alternative Therapies - In which the angst of "Essence" segues into some amusing complications.

"This is officially the damnedest thing I have ever seen." Doctor Cottle made his pronouncement in his usual pack-a-day rasp.

B is for Boxing - Written for the adama_roslin LJ comm's alphabet challenge ... jeebus, 16 years ago. 🤯

"Thank you, Lieutenant Gaeta." Laura Roslin smiled as she returned the young man's conscientious salute. Stepping off the ramp of her shuttle, she glanced around. "Did the Admiral get caught in CIC again?" Bill tried to meet her arrivals whenever ship's business didn't detain him.

The Commander's Eyes - A gift fic for someone who wanted an A/R piece from the POV of Billy Keikeya, Laura's chief aide.

Billy Keikeya was nothing if not observant.

So as far as patterns go, I apparently tend to start with either short, straightforward sentences or dialogue. Though the first line of ZDHR breaks that mold a bit.

None of my longer stuff really seemed to lend itself to this, so it's Laura's POV on a challenge piece I originally wrote from Bill's perspective; that may or may not be breaking the rules, but I’m presumptuous enough to assume you’ll forgive me.

"Never give up hope," she'd said with Bill and the fleet in mind, and with the unfathomable weight of humanity's survival soon to rest on his shoulders alone (Baltar hardly seemed capable of easing the burden).

Hearing it turned back on her feels like a sick joke. And she knows he doesn't mean it that way. And she tries not to take it that way. But it hurts. It brings back the flood of things she knows but tries not to think about on a minute-to-minute basis - the feelings she’s carefully restrained for the duration of their meeting - until now.

After all, what does she have to hope for? That the mets spreading through her viscera (she thinks of them nonspecifically these days - they're everywhere now, so no need to bother with an inventory) kill her before the ones in her spine paralyze her? That if the ones in her spine do paralyze her, at least they won't hurt anymore? (Fat chance of that, she thinks darkly, remembering how it had played out for her mother.) She hopes for the fleet. Wants for the fleet. Plans for the fleet. 

No, hope is a thing that other people have. For herself, she only hopes it’s swift.  Now, she simply wants to move, to get away from this conversation, because she feels her composure slipping and he doesn't need to see that. This had been meant to fortify him, and she very much doubts that ending the meeting with a breakdown will accomplish that. .

She hears herself mumble a dismissal as she readies herself to stand, but her legs - traitorous frakkers - wobble beneath her. Instantly, his hands are on her, supporting her, helping her back to her feet, and the metaphor of it isn’t lost on her. Despite their rocky start, he’s been supporting her in so many ways, large and small, since the fall. 

She staggers slightly, the sudden change of position triggering a moment of lightheadedness, but his hands never leave her. They only shift as she regains her equilibrium, one hand suddenly feeling impossibly hot on her hip, warming her against the ever-present chill that’s come to permeate her life, even as his arm remains intertwined with hers - ready to catch her if she should fall. She’s about to say something - to deflect from the embarassment of her weakness (she had hoped for a more stately egress), when she feels his fingers, warm on her chin, turn her face to his.

He holds her gaze with those eyes - impossibly blue - for a long moment, and she smiles in spite of herself. She’s going to miss this man, she realizes as he looks at her with a tenderness that makes her ache.  As he moves closer still, she realizes his intent; something in her softens. 

She kisses him back. 

For that too-brief moment, she’s not dying, and the worlds haven’t ended. She isn’t about to abandon him with the weight of the responsibility for humanity’s continued survival. She is warm. 

She feels her mask melt into a smile, perhaps one more genuine than she’s felt in years, and a soft giggle escapes, like a nervous schoolgirl.  She hadn’t realized she could still feel this. 

Even as he carefully hands her off to Billy and she takes the first laborious steps back to her bedroom, the glow of it lingers, taking the edge off the pain; the feel of his touch lingers, keeping her warm for the first time in weeks.

The Battlestar Galactica books are less than stellar, except for these two paragraphs from Laura Roslin's perspective in Sagittarius is Bleeding...

Removing her nightgown, she stepped into the shower, mindful of the need to keep it as brief as possible. The fleet had already had to cope once with the loss of water that had put them into crisis mode. She wasn't about to forget that and endlessly squander a precious resource. Get in, get cleaned off, get out.

She remembered with amusement Billy's suggestion that they mount a campaign centered around "Save water; shower with a friend." Involuntarily her thoughts turned once more to Adama...

Don't. Go. There.

"Boy," she muttered, soaping her hair, "you really are a glutton for punish-"

Between Billy being the innocent young lad that he is and Laura thinking some thoughts, skimming through three books of poorly written fanfiction was worth it.

Death was supposed to be cold.

Billy survives the terrorist attack on Cloud 9 and struggles to come to terms with his continued existence after throwing himself between Dee and a bullet. Aside from the pain of gunshot wounds he finds himself numb and tempted by the nothingness of the possible afterlife.

This was supposed to be a short introspective piece to work on in between working on my animatic (also for BSG) and uh, take a look at the word count,,,

Turns out I cannot write for a long time when I have outlines, but I can ramble for 10 pages and get something I’m actually super proud of.
