Takuzo Nagano’s Azran Studio

Here we ask some questions to Level-5’s main character designer Takuzo Nagano-san regarding some of the characters!

Character Designer Takuzo Nagano

He was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1979. He now works for Level-5. He has created unique characters in the world of Professor Layton, including Layton and Luke.

Mystery 01: When designing characters for Azran Legacy, which was to be the final chapter of Hershel Layton, what were you thinking about when designing the characters?

It was to be the last one, after all, so I wasn’t excited about that, but we were told that we would need characters to suit many more locations than usual, so I had to be aware of making the people in each different culture distinct. I thought “do the main characters need to change their clothes in the extreme hot and cold climates?” but it is only a game.

I was also looking forward to seeing how the funnier-looking characters would be animated. It’s fun to match the strange and unique Professor Layton characters with their puzzles.

Mystery 02: Who is your favourite character from “Azran Legacy”?

It’s easy to understand who my favourites are because they tend to get preferential treatment to appear towards the end or in the credits pictures. For example, Harald from Froenborg who is self-conscious about Sycamore and the big city, or Amanita from Phong-Gi… I have a favourite character from each place. In this game, I’m particularly fond of the Targent duo Rook and Bishop (Macaw and Robin in US). Robin’s funny hand waving when he runs away, and giving a puzzle to send a message, when I see such cute, good movements, I think of Suzuki (Jun-san, director).

He’s the kind of goofy, likeable bad guy that you would see in “Home Alone” or “101 Dalmations”. I was like “what did these two do wrong?”, but it was fun seeing them in the game. I would have liked it if they had appeared in the whole series. When playing, I wondered what happened to them, so I included what happened with them in the ending illustrations.

ナゾ01 - 工ルシャ ー ル・レイトン最終章と決まっていた『超文明 A の遺産』キャラクターデザインをするときに、どんな思いて描きまたか?

最後だからという気負いなどは無かったのですが、普段よりたくさんの場所に合わせたキャラが必要ということだったので、それぞれ文化の違う人たちが必要というところは意識しました。「寒暖の差が激しいので主人公たちの服装も変えるのかな?」と思いましたが、そこはゲームっぽくなっています。

あとは少しでも面白おかしくなりそうなキャラを作って、どう動いていくのか楽しみにしていました。レイトン教の住人は奇妙で個性的な方がナゾとマッチしていて楽しいですからね。

ナゾ02 -『超文明 A の遺産』で特にお気に入りのキャラクター は誰ですか?

僕のお気に入りは分かりやすく、ストーリー エンドの一枚絵や、工ンディングに出ていたりと、ちょっと扱いが優遇されがちなんです。例えば、恥すかしがり屋でサ ー ハイマンや都会を意識しまくるスノ ー ラのハラ ー ケ、ムスロッホのヒトヨとか・・・各地方に 1 人は好きなキャラがいます。その中で、特に今作で僕がひいきしたお気に入りはタ ージェントコンビのロビンとスワロ ー です。ロビンの手をぶらぶらさせる変な逃げ方や、念を送るようにナゾを出すところとか、ああいったかわいらしくて良い動きをみると、鈴木(純さん。ディレクタ ー )らしいなあ、と思います。

「ホ ー ムアローン」とか、「 101 匹わんちゃん」とかに出ていそうな、おまぬけで憎めない小悪党をちゃんとやってくれているので、本当に好きなキャラクターです。「この人たち何か悪いことしたつけ?」というくらいでしたけど、ゲームに出てくるのが楽しみでした。彼らがシリ ーズずっと出ていたらより楽しかったはす。僕自身遊んでいて、彼らのその後はすこく気がかりだったので、エンディングイラストで 2 人はどうなったのかを入れています。

Another adoption AU fanfic where Targent free Aurora from the ice before Sycamore, Layton and Co…

Or maybe Sycamore is there but he’s being restrained by Targent agents.

Rather than threatening the Azran emissary (who he needs to comply with them), Bronev is smart and acts as if Targent *rescued* Aurora and they’re here to introduce her to modern civilisation.

Targent take Aurora to Kodh, where they learn about the Azran eggs. Bronev has to interrogate deal with Sycamore sends a group of his most trusted agents out with Aurora to retrieve the eggs. These agents are: Swift (assassin/bodyguard), Emmy (Bronev’s personal spy), Rook and Bishop (just because). Surely this gang of hardened agents won’t bond with the Azran emissary…

Except, they do, starting with Bishop and Emmy, followed by Rook and Swift. They go on adventures with Aurora and recover the eggs, before returning to the Nest to have Aurora form the keystone.

When Aurora remembers the truth about the Azran civilisation — and what is will unleash — she is horrified, but Bronev is determined to go to the Azran sanctuary nonetheless.

Rook and Bishop try to escape with Aurora, which ends up with them being locked away at the Nest. They escape with Desmond Sycamore and pursue Bronev to the sanctuary.

They reach the sanctuary and recover an injured Swift, who finally listened to Aurora tried to free her, only to be knocked out by Emmy.

The gang makes their way through the sanctuary but they’re too late to stop Bronev— who stabs Aurora and releases the Azran golems. What do you know— they need five humans sacrifices to stop the golems and there are five on hand (Emmy, Rook, Bishop, Swift and Sycamore). The five of them die so Aurora pleads for the light of the Azran to bring them back to life.

Rook decides Targent will keep the Azran sanctuary, thank you, but Aurora refuses to hand it over unless Targent swear to change their ways and make amends for the damages they’ve done. So, they do. The end!

THE VENERABLE ALEXANDER ABBOT NEAR OMEGA LAKE (1479)

Saint Alexander of Oshevensk (+ 1479) was the founder of the Oshevensk Dormition Monastery and enlightener of the Kargopol area, and was tonsured in the White Lake Monastery. He appeared to Saint Diodorus of George Hill (November 27) in the seventeenth century when his Holy Trinity Monastery ran out of supplies. The brethren complained because there was nowhere to buy food in the wilderness. Saint Alexander reminded Diodorus of how the Lord had fed the five thousand in the wilderness and ordered him to go fishing. Fearing that the vision was a demonic delusion, Saint Diodorus ignored it. When Saint Alexander appeared a third time, Diodorus, wishing to test him, asked him to say a prayer. Saint Alexander recited “It is Truly Meet,” and his face shone with radiant light. The saint revealed himself as Alexander, the igumen of Oshevensk Dormition Monastery, and repeated his order to go fishing. Obeying this command, the monks went out and caught many fish.

APOSTLE ZACCHAEUS, BISHOP OF CAESAREA (1ST C.)

The holy Apostle Zacchaeus was a rich publican at Jericho. Since he was short of stature, he climbed a sycamore tree in order to see the Savior passing by. After the Ascension of the Lord, Saint Zacchaeus accompanied Saint Peter on his travels. Tradition says he became the Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine, where he died in peace.

The Gospel (Luke 19:1-10) describing Zacchaeus’ encounter with Christ is read on the Sunday before the Triodion begins.

A couple of people have messaged (thank you!!) asking for stories of what it was like ‘back in the day’. This episode of my podcast (with my sister and brother in law) has a lot of that. We had to be on the phone or going out of the house at all times if we wanted fun and interesting activities and this tells about quite a few, plus a lot of other interesting information. The Winner of the Ultimate Queer Icon Competition is....

Desmond Sycamore/Jean Descole!!!!

He fought off 31 contestants to be crowned The Ultimate Queer Icon!! Congrats!!

Don't feel sad if your fav didn't make it. Everyone tried their best and there's no ill feelings between any of the contestants.

In fact, all the contestants are currently at a party together:

Sammy Thunder and Randal Mann are in charge of the music. Surprisingly, it's fairly decent. Until one of the speakers explodes.

Descole is standing ominously in the corner, wearing his Ultimate Queer Icon Crown. Emmy is taking the piss out of him.

Randall wants to dance with Angela. Henry wants to dance with Randall. Drake wants to dance with Henry. They reach a compromise and do the hokey cokey together. That's not a euphemism for anything, they are literally dancing the hokey cokey together.

Simon Reinhold runs out of power and Frederick gets shot with a party popper. Both are laying unconscious on the dance floor.

Emiliana was the one who shot Frederick. He was being loud and obnoxious. Eve witnessed the event but did nothing to prevent it.

Cesar Chance and Tab Lloyd brought their baby with them and Janice and Melina are cooing over him.

Aldus and Jacques have a very intense conversation about the products they use on their mustaches. Poor Ernest gets caught in the middle.

A nearby crime is reported and Grosky rushes into action FOR THE YARD! Alfendi tries to leave too, but Lucy stops him.

Hershel Layton and Doug Scowers have a long, boring talk about archeology. Katrielle has to literally drag her father away.

It's Lettie and Jean's first time out together and they are very nervous. They spend the entire time holding hands.

There's an awkward standoff happening at the food table. Rook, Bishop and Mackintosh all want to get something to eat, but Leonard Bloom is standing right there and they're too scared to go near him.

Shortly after Descole left, Desmond Sycamore arrives with Aurora. She teaches him some ancient Azran dance ritual, which happens to be very similar to breakdancing.

Dimitri Allen spends the entire party holding a drink and standing awkwardly.
