16, 17, 26 and/or 31 for the fic writer game! (feel free to pick and choose whichever ones you feel inclined to respond to!)
Link to asks here!
Hey thanks for asking! Let's see. Sorry in advance.
16. What do you struggle with most when writing?
Looking at the words so much they don't make any sense and panicking that it's garbage and every one will kill me if they read it because it was so bad it actively caused their brain harm. My apologies to everyone who has ever interacted with me in this phase of my writing. I know it's annoying. The feelings are real when I am having them. I am always so sure it's that bad and then someone reads it for me and I'm so sure they will shake their heads sadly and tell me I deserve to be smited. Smote. Smitten. For having written something so profoundly irredeemable.
then they say "it's fine you fucking dramatic raccoon" and I look at again and think "oh maybe it is fine"
17. What is something you recently felt proud of in your writing?
I got a comment recently assuming that my career was the same as the one of the characters in my fic which always fills me with wicked glee. Hahahha no I do not have a medical or engineering or paleontology degree I am a fucking poetry major behold the power of the humanities!!!
Tumblr media
26. Do you ever "prep" your fics with outlines or warmups before you start writing, or do you just dive right in?
Hahahha I can not convey to you the depths to which I don't. I spend a lot of time walking around or gardening kind of daydreaming on vibes for my fics which is a valid part of my process no matter how many memes I see about how daydreaming about the vibes of your fic is not the same as writing your fic.
I mean, sure, but they are also not unrelated. So most of the time I spent a few weeks/months/years sort of mentally puzzling through the concept of a fic while falling asleep or whatever (I usually have a few fics in the old brain loop at a time) and then after sufficient brain marination, I usually spend a few weeks doing research about whatever the major themes are and maybe create a meticulous 30 page doc of sources.
And then I just fuck around and write and see what happens and then after about 10-20k words and blah la la blah tuppy tap typing I have a breakdown because I didn't plan anything because I'm a fucking idiot and now fucking what? And then I get through that and figure out what they are doing for a while till I hit another wall.
And wonder why I was born and also why don't I enjoy exercising or cooking health food or meditating or some other hobby that is healthy and productive or even something dangerous like ax juggling, anything that isn't writing.
It depends how much rising action/turning points/climax there are in the fic but pretty much all the turning points make me wish I had never seen a keyboard and that I was a person who made plots.
sometimes I think of all the writers I know who make a plot and then write all the scenes. Just like. In a row? And they know what's going to happen?
and I think they must be the happiest people alive and why can't I be like them??? They probably also enjoy exercising and cooking healthy food. I bet they do all of the exercises their physical therapist assigns them and their knees never make a weird creaky-clicky sound on the stairs because they are responsible and kept up with their exercises.
But the thing is --- that if I know how a fic ends it's not as interesting to me to write it. One reason I am so productive as a writer is I genuinely don't know how my fics will end and I want to know.
Often I struggle to finish a fic once I have got near enough to the end to know how it ends. This usually happens with a chapter or two left. And I have to just chain myself to my desk and hammer those chapters out like it's a fucking work email because blahhhhhh I already know this why do I have to write it downnnnnn.
Is this helpful? Should I write a flow chart of my process? (That is a joke)
31. What fic meant the most to you to write?
Probably Plastered just cause it was my first fic and I was incredibly sad when I wrote it and writing it really made me feel better. I have a whole thing about it at the end of the fic if you want to know my business.

I've seen you criticize multiple of the Batman movies before (Nolan/Burton/Schumacher/etc.).
Do you personally think any of the theatrical Batman movies are good adaptations of the comics? Or do they all suck in their own way?
I have a bit of a soft spot for Batman & Robin (1997) if only because it's tonally consistent unlike the previous three films and also its funny. You can't be mad at Batman pulling out a Bat Credit Card.
Hmmm...I don't really think I care for Batman (1966) in any capacity, the show didn't translate to screen, at least in the format that they chose, though I do like individual scenes like how Batman and Robin need to rip ass down the highway in the Batmobile to the airport to pick up their Batcopter, everyone who sees them flying to the coast waving or saluting.
Batman: Mask of The Phantasm (1993) I have issue with on the subject of its portrayal of the character and how it "Marvel-izes" Batman. Now, when I say that, I mean that Marvel (and, to be frankly honest, Kirby, Ditko et al.) introduced the overarching concept of Superhero as a Burden, that this line of life kind of sucks. It starts from day 1 when in Fantastic Four #1, Ben Grimm becomes The Thing while he sees his best friend become Mr. Fantastic, and throughout (broadly gestures at the entire history of Fantastic Four) has to reconcile his obligations of being heroic with the fact that he is "apart" from society at large because of how people view him as unsightly and monstrous. Back to Batman: I really do not vibe with the concept presented in this film (and continued into Batman Beyond and to a lesser extent Justice League) that being Batman is burdensome to Bruce and that being Batman is painful and that Bruce will never be happy and eventually he'll be cut off from everyone because he's a jackass and blah blah blahhhhhh. There is obviously a certain air of darkness at the core of Batman but I'm generally of the opinion that we need to see Batman (at least, Batman "proper" that we follow from issue to issue or episode to episode) as a person who is well adjusted and accomplished and makes a positive impact on the world. Now, if you want to counter that and you do it really fucking well (see: The Dark Knight Returns) then we can have a new conversation, but until that point? Can't we let Batman be nice and happy. Can't we let Batman have friends. Can't we let Batman relax. I think he deserves it. 🖤

Piggybacking off of, but not hijacking, Plaidos's post here about transmasc Harry DuBois I have to say like.... I've never really understood MOST transmasc reads of characters. Like, the characters that transmascs try to project onto are always the cis male characters in media (because, like transfems, the idea of projecting onto the main character is always enticing)
But like, it takes such HUGE fucking leaps in logic to actually do that. I come primarily from the KH fandom and transmasc reads of either Sora or Riku, while some of the more valid ones in fandom in general, are still WILD to me, and I think it really embodies a really really large divide in the way transmascs and transfems both view characters and also view transitioning at large
If Riku was transmasc, for example, transmascs would be happy if he was able to undergo medical transitioning and top surgery in his youth, and then quietly become a man and then stealth there without any sort of intervention. Like, that's the goal, right? It's "his parents were good about it, he found a good doctor, and then he stealthed it".
When I project being transfem onto Sora, it's usually like "post KH3 she's just wracked with guilt and learning from Xion and Namine that she can just decide to be a woman and does that and it comes with a lot of heavy emotional baggage" and it's like... I dunno. Transfems want to see the struggle in a character, want to see our hurt externalized and view an ideal journey through a character we relate to and like, make that journey worth it, right? Like, our own lives are so hard, we want to see a woman who, despite it all, makes it through it and enjoys herself.
Transmascs... just kind of want to see the end result and be done with it, I guess? Which is very indicative of a lot of irl transmascs I've observed, like, they want to transition and then stealth and then be a Man. I don't want to be a Woman, I want to be a trans woman. Like, my struggle is a part of me, being clocky is fine, my bond with other trans women is way more important than my bond with like, cis women. But transmascs just kinda wanna shed the whole thing and leave it behind (and sometimes leave behind transfems and trans people as a whole, cough cough) and it's FASCINATING to see that reflected in a fandom mindset, right?
And I dunno, even with characters like Xion and Namine who are widely considered transfem coded over anything else, it's due to their like, NARRATIVE nature. It's the idea of "they were nothing and chose to be girls" and that's an important part of their like, transfem journey, just like irl transfems. Transmasc headcanons are usually so "i dunno i wanted them to be transmasc" and ignore so much of the like, narrative nuance, or the character identity, and just fjdksalgjdslk I dunno!! It's almost frustrating to see sometimes, I always hated the Sora/Riku transmasc headcanons because it just. Made so little sense. Especially Riku, which was the more popular, holy shit what a bad transmasc headcanon, that bitch is a girl
(Also obviously this doesn't apply to all transmascs or all transmasc headcanons blahh blahhhh blahhhhhh blah but it is a pretty large percentage of them from what I've observed in fandom and having transmascs in my life, so)

i HATE the "true selves" thing IM SORRY I DONT CARE BLAH BLAH BLAHHHHHH
like uhm have you ever thought of the beauty of having walls of confidence/masks (literally and figuratively) up and then they slowly come down and the other loves eachother more HUH YEAH I SAID IT
also in the show they try to cut that bullcrap out like that one time adrien is confused (dont ask me the episode i dont remember) and plagg told him that he isnt adrien and he isnt chat noir, and that he's both, ITS IMPORTANT, and tikki/alya is constantly reminding marinette that she is ladybug and they're the same person
If I have to read another fucking comment about how "marichat is better than ladrien because in the former they can be their true selves with each other" I'm going to commit a federal crime with violent repercussions.
Ladrien is another peak side of the love square and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.

I think using the term "boomer" as a slang term for anyone over the age of like, 45? 50? Kind of highlights how ridiculous the categorizing of distinct generations are. Like most of the people we talk about or see as baby boomers would be closer to generation x, and conversely as lot of gen x would be millennials and blah blah blahhhhhh.

I love fanfic where people dont know how to write Liverpool slang i just get so amused by them saying anyroad and oi lad 24 times in a sentence.
Yup ^^ (admittedly tho ive probably done this in the past haha) I think a lot of writers who over do it with scouser stuff though are probably only just getting into writing Beatles fics, and/or they’re not from the UK, so they just, like, don’t get it lol
But honestly, no fic will ever make me cringe harder then this scene, so thats something
