Thank you for your last answer to my question about your writing, that was really helpful and interesting! I have another question, I really like how you wrote NYADA in your fic “With Every Broken Bone”. I always wished they had done better with it in canon. Why do you think Kurt thrived at NYADA, but Blaine didn’t? I’m glad too you made reference to Blaine having some friends there, as I always assumed he would at least have some acquaintances.
Nonny, thank you so much for coming to chat with me! I don't get a lot of convos about my writing, so I appreciate it anytime anyone comes to talk about it! <3 <3
And, ooff, I mean, I had to make NYADA make sense. Because, man, that school -- I mean, I went to a university where I was part of the school of music, and nothing NYADA did made ANY sense.
First of all, I do not understand a school where Elliott and Jesse are rejected and Brody and those Sycophants were let in. How can Kurt bare his soul in an audition and not get in while Rachel has to stalk her way in after utterly failing? Why is the Dean of the school personally grading freshman assignments? MAKE IT MAKE SENSE!
I don't think Kurt particularly thrived at NYADA -- because other than the midnight madness thing, what did they even show him doing there? Not really anything. Meanwhile, I don't think Blaine didn't thrive professionally. He was an emotional mess who couldn't keep up with the entirety of his life. He downward spiraled out of college (as lots of people do). And despite me hating NYADA, I don't blame the college for Blaine's personal issues.
And, I mean, yeah, one of the problems with NYADA is that it was such a side plot that the show didn't want to develop that there wasn't really any time given to world building. I think Blaine is a very personable guy, who probably natural has more friends and is (said lovingly) better liked than Kurt just by his own nature. So it doesn't make sense for him NOT to have friends at NYADA. He's the one for whom it's easier to make friends, so I just had to include that.
That's my two cents <3

hmmm is you're losing me more of a finn song or a rachel song after the 4x04 breakup episode? i kinda think rachel song because she felt abandoned after he dropped her off at the train station, but i think finn was falling out of love when he saw her with brody

Christmas Eves (2/21)
Summary: Blaine makes a quick trip to Ohio to see his parents over Christmas. He certainly doesn't expect to run into his ex-boyfriend Kurt, or to reexamine every aspect of his life, but this Christmas Eve is full of surprises.
Rating: T
Chapter 2: Bikini
“I thought it was you,” Kurt said with a smile.
Blaine managed to find his breath. “Hey,” he said. “Wow, uh - hi.”
“Do you mind?” Kurt asked, gesturing at the empty chair across from Blaine. “I’d love to catch up. Unless you want to be alone.”
“No, uh, please,” Blaine agreed, although he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to catch up with Kurt, or be alone, or if maybe there was some third option he’d prefer.
He hadn’t seen Kurt in nearly ten years - not since they’d broken up Blaine’s senior year of high school, when the distance between McKinley and NYADA had proven too difficult for them to face.
Kurt sat down, leaning his elbows onto the table. He had a glass of something clear and carbonated, garnished with a lime wedge. “So, Blaine,” he said. “Come here often?”
Blaine laughed, and he felt a bit of the tension in his chest release. Kurt was funny, and disarming - how could he have forgotten?
“No,” Blaine replied. “Just in town for Christmas, and I needed a break.”
Kurt sipped his drink. Blaine tried not to stare, but he also wanted to scrutinize him, to identify all the little differences between the man sitting in front of him and the boy from his memories. “And where are you in town from, if you don’t mind me asking? Where have you been, all these years?”
There was a short answer, and a long answer. Blaine decided to go with something in-between.
“Well,” he said, “After we broke up and I was no longer dead set on New York…it turned out my options were sort of endless. And that was pretty terrifying, but also freeing.” He swiped his hand along his beer bottle, collecting condensation on his skin. “UC Irvine has a really good musical theater program, and that’s where I ended up. I still live in the LA area.”
Kurt cocked his head, seeming intrigued. “Is Cooper still out there?”
Blaine nodded. “Yep, I get to see him pretty often, it’s nice.”
“Is he back for Christmas too?”
“No,” Blaine said with a laugh. “He had better things to do.” He took out his phone and pulled up Cooper’s Instagram, displaying the latest photo - a selfie of Cooper and a woman in a bikini on the beach. “See?”
Kurt smiled. “So he hasn’t changed.”
Blaine shrugged. “People are who they are.” He put his phone away. “How long are you in town for?”
Kurt raised an eyebrow. “That’s an excellent question,” he said, pausing to take a drink. “I’ve been living here, for the last year and a half.”
“Oh,” Blaine said, startled. “I didn’t realize - what happened to New York?”
Kurt shrugged. “College was great. Post-college was…hard. Then my dad had another minor health scare and I had my quarter-life crisis and decided to regroup at home.”
Blaine felt something in him ache. “How is your family?” he asked.
“They’re doing well,” Kurt said. “I’m ready to leave them on their own again. I’m just not sure where I’ll go.” He twisted his lips wryly. “Like you said, endless possibilities are just as scary as they are freeing.”
“I’m sure you’ll figure it out,” Blaine said. He meant it - his breakup with Kurt might be a sore spot in his past, but he had nothing but well wishes for his high school sweetheart now.
“Anyway,” Kurt said, shifting in his chair, settling in. “Tell me about Los Angeles. Have you already started having plastic surgery? I hear it’s mandatory out there, and you do look great.”
Blaine was surprised by how easy it was to fall back into conversation with Kurt - to talk about their lives, to joke and tease like they were still seventeen. They avoided any touchy subjects, and still had plenty to talk about.
After a while Kurt checked something on his phone and said, “Oh my god, it’s late.” He held up the screen to show Blaine that it was 12:06. “Merry Christmas, I guess.”
“Merry Christmas,” Blaine responded. He’d finished his beer a while ago, and hadn’t gotten up for a new drink. “I guess I should head home.”
“Me too,” Kurt said, standing up. “I need to be up early to start cooking.”
They buttoned their coats and walked out together, emerging into the dark, chilly night.
“I’m really glad I ran into you,” Blaine said. “This was fun.”
“It was,” Kurt agreed. “Have a good holiday, okay?”
Blaine nodded. “You too. And say hi to your family.”
They said goodbye and went their separate ways.

@wowbright - I mean, if we're going for things that I don't fully buy in universe... just with Kurt...
I'm not sure I fully buy that his best friend becomes Rachel. The Season 3 push on that just feels... not right, and purposeful to solely support the Rachel Berry story line.
In fact, I can see Kurt and Blaine closing off entirely to the point where they really aren't involved in the rest of what's going on around them, and the rest of them just kind of roll their eyes and let them be.
Which is why Blaine has so many issues when Kurt leaves. I do buy that.
Meanwhile, there's no way 2 teenagers from Ohio are affording a $1800 a month loft (I mean are Rachel's parents that rich?). Don't get me started on the nonsense that is NYADA and how that just does not work on so many levels that it makes my heard hurt. And I don't buy that either of them would really be as accepting as they are with Santana coming in - nor would Santana really tolerate being there and not find her own thing to do.
(I mean, TV logistics dictates all of it, so I get it.)
While I do believe Kurt and Blaine would have relationship issues (really probably for the rest of their life that they do learn to work through) I don't fully believe they'd break up a second time. I definitely don't believe Blaine would ever date Karofsky (even though that has grown on me over the years). And the two of them coming back to Ohio to become teachers... makes absolutely no sense at all.
But then again, I do buy Sue locking them in an elevator so they'd make out.
Just because I don't really believe it doesn't mean I don't accept canon for the insanity that it was (is). Or that I can't understand the limitations of writing a television show.
So, there ya go. <3

Thinking about how the only person Blaine could have turned to in season 4 when he was starting to doubt his and Kurt's relationship that /I/ could trust to give him actually good and unbiased advice is Burt. Burt who cares immensely about Blaine, who asks to be the one to tell Blaine that Kurt got into NYADA.
We know he's not one to ignore Kurt's faults. He calls Kurt out on them, he wants his son to be the best person he can be. He would have done everything he could to help Blaine figure out how to talk to Kurt and he wouldn't be afraid to suggest that they take a break if Kurt isn't able to give the same effort in their relationship that Blaine is.
But there's no way Blaine would have actually thought about turning to Burt in that moment and devoid of anyone else to talk to he's just stuck in his own head catastrophizing and spiraling with no one to talk him down.
And a world in which Blaine had friends. Friends that weren't Kurt's friends first. Friends that wouldn't be inclined to defend Kurt even if he is in the wrong. Or at least friends Blaine can trust to be on his side and. He doesn't really have Sam yet. Their best friendship is just beginning. And Sam and Kurt have a complex history that would lend itself to him being overly sympathetic to Kurt to the detriment of giving actual advice.
What I would have given for Blaine to still have the warblers. For him to have rebuilt a friendship with Sebastian, or at least with Nick and Jeff, Trent and David. /Anyone/ he can talk to. Anyone to remind him he's still a person without Kurt, he's still whole and complete and deserving of happiness.
Burt would have given him that. But Blaine would never have asked. And he had no one else.

Tis the Damn Season
Day 9: Coddle
AO3
Coddle
He and Cooper were planning their escape. Y hey both desperately had to get out of this house. Two days of being home and he already felt smothered. Their only refuge was sleep.
Pam Anderson had the best intentions at heart. She missed her boys. But they were fed up. Literally. She kept feeding them.
So the only solution the two brothers could think of was going out to dinner. Mom couldn’t feed them before going and wouldn’t have a meal ready for them when they returned. Cooper booked them a table for two at a local restaurant and Blaine was very much looking forward to it.
Goodbye coddling at least for one night.
It was a Tuesday night so the place wasn’t terribly busy. They were sitting in the main dining room.
“So how’s school really?” Cooper asked while browsing the cocktail menu.
Blaine had given his parents the basic answer. He loved the city, all his classes (expect tap) had exceeded his expectations. Both of which were true.
“It’s good, Coop. It’s nerve wracking too. Feels like my whole future depends on the skills I learned there.”
“Well, you know I didn’t even get a degree and I turned out fine.”
Which was true. Right out of high school, Cooper took off to LA, moved in with a group of strangers and started auditioning his ass off til he could afford his share of rent. Now, almost 8 years later, he had starred in several country-wide commercials, been an extra in some hot television shows (Cooper was particularly proud of his role as corpse number 2 in NCIS), and had just auditioned for a supporting role in a major motion picture.
“You’ll be great, Blaine, give yourself some credit. You were the lead singer of the Warblers for 4 years. It’s unheard of for a freshman to get that spot. NYADA knows what they’re doing. They have a 90% placement. You’ll get a job. You’ll get Broadway. Mom, Dad, and I will be sitting front row on your opening night.”
Blaine was about to say thank you when their waitress asked what they’d like to drink. Cooper ordered some speciality holiday cocktail and Blaine stuck to water. He had offered to drive them in case Cooper got a little too tipsy tonight.
Cooper had said that was the best part of being an older brother. This short window of time between driving age and drinking age. He was guaranteed a designated driver. But the downside was only being able to take advantage of it when they were in the same city.
It was after ordering his meal, Cooper was flirting with the waitress, when Blaine spotted him.

Mike Change follows his friends to NYC for university-NYU Pre-Med with a shit ton of dance classes because his parents never said anything about a minor in the arts, only that he was expected to go to med school.
He has a solid support system in his glee friends but doesn’t mind branching out and is kinda excited to not be in Lima and to lean into who he is-he starts wearing the clothes he’s always wanted to wear, ones he bought on a secret shopping spree with Kurt on a summer steal away trip to Colombus their last spring break at home.
He lets Blaine talk him into a helix piercing when Blaine gets an earring and he loves having a family in New York.
A bunch of his dance class mates comment on it when he starts eating lunch with them. He feels a weird twinge in his chest when he notices half the compliments come from his fellow male dancers and realizes he doesn’t mind their attention.
But he also starts hanging out with an international students exchange club and meets Raphael and Ragnor and Catarina. He loves his glee friends but he’s starting to feel seen as his own person. Something that had been impossible in Lima and in HS.
He starts a study group with the beautiful Izzy in his Biology and Chem classes and becomes fast friends with her. He lets her do his make up and finds a thrilling sort of inner peace when he sees himself in eyeliner. She gushes and complains that her big brother would never let her do this.
He meets said big brother-a pre law giant of man (seriously taller than Finn!)- who glares at everything that’s not his sister, but smiles at Mike when he asks about the man’s archery medals. (Who the fuck is on an Olympic team and Doesn’t brag about it?!) Mikes chest twinges again and he tells himself it’s because Alec is the type of guy friend he’s always wanted.
He wakes himself up one Friday morning, sheets a damp mess with hazy memories of his dream but possibly Alec’s name on his lips. He shakes himself out of it and lets a pretty blonde ballerina from class push him into an empty bedroom at the party he attends that night.
He spends the next few weeks with all the various girls he dances with.
He spends an equal amount of Wednesday’s studying with Alec at a coffee shop-But! They both have that time free and they both like coffee and Mike’s never really made his own friends, they always adopt him, not the other way around! So that’s why he’s always so excited to see Alec.
It’s getting harder to lie to himself when the bottle he spins at the next party he’s at lands on a ginger ROTC guy named George. They make out to the cheers of the other partiers and Mike spends the night drunkenly telling himself that kissing is just an enjoyable thing. He spends the next morning soberly googling if a kiss makes you gay.
A couple more weeks, a couple more weekends spent with the dance girls, until Rachel and Kurt throw a NYADA midterms party and he only had a half a beer but let’s Kurt’s friend Imasu blow him in the bathroom. He tries to talk it away like the kiss-it feels good no matter who it is-until he’s on his knees reciprocating and finds he likes it as much as any other part of sex.
He skips that Wednesday with Alec and can’t explain why the “Hope you’re okay” text makes him ache when he ignores it.
He shuts down on himself, only hangs out with his known friends and throws himself into a short lived relationship with the blonde ballerina to try and keep himself “on track” when he walks in on her and their teacher. He wasn’t in love with her, but it does hurt and he definitely doesn’t want to be involved with whatever shit is going to hit the fan when the administration finds out about her.
He spends Halloween half drunk, crying and spilling all of this to Kurt and Blaine. They sit with him, cuddle him, drink with him. And they’re there with him when he finally says out loud that he’s Bisexual. They celebrate at 4 am with pancakes at the local all night diner.
He rejoins study group and explains himself to an icy Izzy who thaws and sends him a blinding smile and wraps him in a big hug.
Ragnor didn’t know that he didn’t know that he was bi but bucks him on the shoulder in solidarity. Cat hugs him and welcomes him back. Raphael tells him he doesn’t care as long as he doesn’t have to see any sappy shit.
On Wednesday he gets to their table early and buys Alec his stupid sweet caramel latte as an apology. He awkwardly stutters out an explanation and even more awkwardly comes out to the then man who is watching him with wide owlish eyes. Alec grins at him when he’s done and quietly comes out to Mike himself and if his whole being light up on the inside, then that’s Mike business alone.
He goes home at Thanksgiving and comes out to his family. He sister hugs him. His mom smiles kindly at him, but his father yells in a tone Mike’s never heard before. It’s ugly, it’s horribly painful and Mikes ready to get up and leave after his father vows to cut him off when his mother stands up for him. He leaves Lima with a hug from his mom and sister but totally disowned by his dad.
His mom’s parents step up to cover his expenses and tell him they don’t care who he loves and long as he’s successful and happy-San Francisco is good for them. He’ll keep his pre-med for now-he likes the idea of providing healthcare to those in need, but declare dance a double major to keep his options totally open.
He goes back to NYU and his friends and they mourn with him and rage with him and are there on his birthday when he moves to change his name in court so he doesn’t have to be tied to a man who hates him. (if his father wanted resort to Latin for insulting him, then he’s going to own that)
At the new year’s party he throws celebrating his new name and identity-he introduces himself as Magnus Bane and is greeted with an eager Alec grabbing him by the lapels of his jacket and kissing him In front of the whole party.
He walks into the new year a new man with an extended family he wouldn’t trade for anything and love he never saw coming.
