top 5 cornetto trilogy scenes
The World's End argument between the five musketeers at The Crossed Hands. There's such a journey in tone from all of them genuinely getting along at the beginning of the scene to everything falling apart after Shane Hawkins walks in. Each member of the group gets the chance to show their stripes and I love it so much.
Opening sequence from The World's End. The flashback doesn't even feel like a "scene" to me, it feels like its own mini-movie. I really like the music, the editing, and the subtle character establishment. The same goes for the montage of the five musketeers starting their days after the title card. If you count all of this as one opening sequence, that's👌👌perfection for me.
Nicholas saying goodbye to Janine in Hot Fuzz. I find it so funny, and the dialogue is such a fun mix of genuine character development and great jokes. I think it's really great for introducing Nicholas as a character, so enjoy it a lot. I also think him pointing out the broken window is one of the best moments ever.
The party after Romeo and Juliet in Hot Fuzz. I really love the small town vibes clashing with the seriousness of Nicholas' investigation (and Nicholas himself😄).
The fight sequence in the bathroom from The World's End. The choreography and the sci-fi reveal are so fun. The conversation after the action is so hilarious while also being so good at building the mystery and tension. I also really really love how little moments of character and relationship development are so seamlessly sewn into the whole scene (Peter hiding in the stall, Gary saying "Andy, did you see that?", etc etc).
These are somewhat off the top of my head, but I'm going for it because this ask is over a year old. Thank you @andrewknightley this was very fun 🫶💫

For my fellow The World’s End enjoyers, I have to HEARTILY recommend the podcast “The Cornetto Minute’”
They talk about each Cornetto movie one minute at a time - like, literally, each episode of the pod they talk about one specific minute of the movies
I’ve just started listening to their World’s End season and these guys get it. They get what makes this movie so special and so under-appreciated and get what makes it work so well and all of the layers and just, ah
If you love The World’s End, you have GOT to listen to these guys talk about it, meticulously breaking down every aspect of every minute and absolutely loving it just as much as we do 🖤
It’s so refreshing to hear meta on this movie that is just so reverential and gives it the credit it truly is due — so yeah, if you love this movie definitely check this out

the punching the wall thing... is like devastating if you think about it because in the "best night of his life" he was so angry for whatever reason he punched a wall. and that was The Good Night....
EXACTLY!!! Gary narrates the first punch with "there was drama," like it's one of the cool parts of the night. But. He was clearly not having a good time right then. As you said, that was his "best night." Having to leave your friends for a moment to have a meltdown...one so bad that you punch something & hurt your hand....that's!! unpleasant enough!! So what the hell were his BAD times like???
It kind of reminds me of this exchange just before the Punch Mode Renaissance:
Steven: Don't do a Gary, Gary. Gary: Oh, that's a thing now, is it? Oliver: It's always been a thing.
LIKE!! AGH. Gary's pain and his unhealthy ways of dealing with it,,, it's so PERVASIVE. It's always there! Damaging his relationships, hurting his friends, hurting him. Of course he's still responsible for his actions, I ain't makin' no foolish statements over here...nonetheless. It's clear that there's this big mess of emotion inside Gary that he has no idea how to properly deal with.
It's heartbreaking that All This invades Gary's life so much that he can't recount one happy night without bringing it up. He glosses over it when he's with other people, but imo, this is one of the moments that proves Gary knows he's always felt something bringing him down.

About a year ago an anon asked me on my multifandom blog (@pyramidofmice) for my headcanons on Gary King's home environment. I haven't responded because I plan to take some screenshots of the movie & do some reading before I analyze Gary (sorry anon 😭). But in the meantime I'd like to have a little fun speculating!
I assume that Gary's family = him and his mom. In my opinion, the movie + the commentary suggest that Gary's dad was absent. I imagine that, if Gary's dad ever actually interacted with his him, it was brief and intermittent.
There's a lot of room to speculate regarding Gary's mom. Gary definitely had negative experiences authority as a kid, imo, but I think it's uncertain whether that happened at home or only at school.
The only things we know about Gary's mom are:
Andy likes her and thinks she's "a good woman." Gary says that he agrees.
Gary evaded her attempts to contact him for 8 months leading up to TWE (if I remember correctly 🙊)
For me, Andy's affection for her doesn't rule out toxic behavior... a young Andy could've failed to understand whatever he was exposed to. I tend to imagine that, at the very least, she fell short in a few ways regarding parenting...but I'm not committed to anything. It could go all sorts of ways!
What do people think??? The movie is very ambiguous about Gary's home life... I'm sooo interested in hearing what others have headcanoned!!
