AU Prompt #6 💓♪

Time slowed to a full stop around you as you focused, the chaos surrounding the silver tree all brought to a halt. Not even Pure Vanila Cookie or White Lily Cookie could move a singular fiber of their being. Such is the perks of having Dungeon Master Cookie as your patron. And, speaking of your patron, she stared down at you with her huge, white eyes. " So, the seal upon the silver tree has broken, thus releasing the five Fallen Heroes into the land of Earthbread once more. Now, Reader Cookie, I suspect you want to do something before I have you roll initiative, yes?" " That's correct, Dungeon Master Cookie." You reply, staring up at the holy, towering figure. However all the seriousness of this moment was thrown out of the window with a few, simple words. " I'd like to roll to seduce the Jester." Your patron seemed... unamused? Yet also as if she were expecting this. After all you did the exact same thing with Dark Enchantress Cookie, but that was just for the funny(plus, you got a nat1 that time). You were completely serious about attempting to woo Shadow Milk Cookie, maybe even another one of the Beasts if they showed themselves. " Are- Are you seriously doing this again?" She asked exasperatedly, to which you eagerly nodded. With a sigh and a wave of her hand, a D20 appeared in your arms. " Fine, fine, give me a Charisma check." And once again, fate blesses you. With a natural 20. " ... NAT 20 LET'S GOOOOO!!!!" You can feel the tired aura from Dungeon Master Cookie. " Alright, alright... I'll let you have this." She sighed as the world faded back into motion. You stood tall and proud next to Pure Vanilla Cookie + Gingerbrave and Friends before you stepped forwards. You're pretty sure that you gave PV war flashbacks with the expression on your face. " Reader Cookie for the love of the Witches-" He attempted to plead, but it was already far too late. " Shadow Milk Cookie, hm?" You began, your tone flirty as it always was when you did shit like this. " What a fine name for such a clearly ever so powerful cookie~" You hummed flirtatiously, batting your eyelashes at the gigantic jester before you. " Oh?" Shadow Milk Cookie hummed, leaning down to get a better look at you. " My my! I didn't think I had such an adoring fan of mine waiting for me here~!" He chirped, a subtle yet bright blue hue taking over his face. " Lord have mercy on us all..." Pure Vanilla Cookie mumbled to himself almost desperately. If both you and Shadow Milk Cookie are flirts... then you'll probably be here, locked in a battle of the heart for a while.

Unpopular opinion: There is no Link Click “trio.” It’s just the ShiGuang Duo + Qiao Ling

Now, before the Qiao Ling fans come after me, I just want to make it clear that I do not hate Qiao Ling. She’s a queen, and I love her. What I do hate, however, is the writers’ neglect of her character.

Warning: This will contain major Link Click season 1 and 2 spoilers.

Cheng Xiaoshi, Lu Guang, and Qiao Ling have been marketed as the main trio right from the OPs and EDs all the way to the different official artworks and PVs. But despite this, Qiao Ling has never been portrayed like a protagonist in the story itself. Her value has always been tied to some other character, and what’s sadder is that even as a supporting character, she’s still being neglected by the writers.

Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang both have something in themselves that push the story forward. Cheng Xiaoshi’s recklessness in s1 is what gives tension to the dives and what leads to the overarching plot related to Emma. His planning in s2 also keeps the plot going. On the other hand, Lu Guang acts as the voice of reason, grounding the fantasy aspect of the show. His hypocrisy revealed in s2 also reshapes how we view the entire story.

But what about Qiao Ling?

Throughout most of season 1, she’s been kept in the dark about ShiGuang’s powers, which in turn excludes her from a big part of the story. In s1, it was only during the kidnapping arc that we see a bit more about her, but the focus wasn’t on her at all but on some random extra. And at the last episode when she finally gets to be in on the whole eye power thing, Li Tianchen possesses her, overshadowing Qiao Ling entirely and redirecting our attention and interest to him. (Extra: In season 1, between Qiao Ling and Emma, would you dare say Qiao Ling is the protagonist? I bet you won’t.)

Then in s2, despite Qiao Ling’s extra screen time and more involvement in the plot, the neglect of her character is even more palpable. She got possessed by a murderer, nearly killed her friend, and even tried to stab her own brother, but even after all these, we barely get to see how she had to process everything.

It’s really no surprise many people loved this scene:

This, for me, is the one time, the ONE time Qiao Ling is portrayed as a character on equal grounds with Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang. If Link Click were a sports anime, this would be the scene where she discards her role as the female manager over a bunch of male athletes and expresses her desire to become a player as well.

But unfortunately, after this episode, Qiao Ling is once again pushed to the sidelines. She’s a player now, yes, but a player who’s just being pushed along the game. She may take the initiative in some things (like talking to Li Tianxi), but even then, the things she do are all still just to help her friends. You know, like a supporting character. None of what she’s doing is for herself alone. (If any Blue Lock fans are reading this, Qiao Ling has no “ego,” so to speak.)

Qiao Ling has no goals of her own, and this is how the writers failed her.

All the other major characters have their own goals. Heck, even the antagonists are more like protagonists than Qiao Ling.

Cheng Xiaoshi wants to find his parents. And he also just wants to help the people he meets in dives

Lu Guang selfishly broke the rules of time travel just to keep one man alive and will do it again if he must

Li Tianxi betrays her brother and Qian Jin just to find a way home

Li Tianchen approaches ShiGuang and later kidnaps Cheng Xiaoshi because he also wants to go home

And Liu Xiao wants to, I don’t know, change the rules of time and space entirely?

God, writing that last bullet makes me realize that even Liu Xiao, who only showed up in the last episode of season 2, has more weight in the story than Qiao Ling. This is ridiculous.

Seriously, what is Qiao Ling even here for??? Play big sister???

Just market her as a supporting character. It’s fine. She’s still badass.

I also don’t have much hopes over how she will be in season 3 because of how season 2 ended. Qiao Ling seeing Lu Guang’s memories means her worth in s3 will inevitably be tied to this secret. It’s the s1 ending all over again. At the end of s1, her worth was tied to the mysterious Red Eyes. At the end of s2, it’s tied to Lu Guang.

If the Link Click writers are gonna keep pushing her as a protagonist, then they better start treating her like one!

It’s not enough to just give Qiao Ling a goal, by the way (although it is very important too). She must also become a player who has the power to control how the game goes. If she ends up inheriting Li Tianxi’s powers, as many theories have said, then may the drama around her not be focused on how she may leak Lu Guang’s secret at any time.

I don’t know what she could do with her powers, but I think it would be very interesting if she ends up opposing Lu Guang.

Lu Guang wants to keep Cheng Xiaoshi alive, but...

...he’s no longer alive. The Cheng Xiaoshi we see is just a glimpse of the past...

What if… as Qiao Ling sees more of Lu Guang’s memories, she sees more of the real Cheng Xiaoshi and suddenly… wants to let go… wants to move on?

The fandom have talked a lot about how ShiGuang may react once the secret is out. But what about how Qiao Ling would react to it over time as she realizes those memories weren’t just her overthinking things?

In season 1, she couldn’t bear to face that kid’s father for years, and at the end of s2, she couldn’t bear to confront Lu Guang… In s3, how long can she bear looking at her dead brother?

The chances of her “giving up” Cheng Xiaoshi and returning to the original timeline is slim, though. I’m just giving an example of how she can be more like a protagonist.

Anyways, I’ll end here… I still have so many thoughts, but I can’t figure out how to organize them. This has also been in my drafts for over two weeks and I just want to post it already!

...I'm baaaack.

I mean, I made one post about Swap!PV and then got distracted for months, so I wouldn't really call this a comeback. The moment I did come back though, apparently a bunch of lore just fell from the sky! Beast Yeast is upon us and all of a sudden I remember making an alt. version of this goober.

Turns out there were a few things I wasn't satisfied with in the first one, so here I am with my Swap!Vanilla 2.0 human edition! Even after all this time I still don't have a name for him. There's more white in his design, he has four horns instead of two and they form a crown on his head(that might be a bit hard to see), he also has a halo, his staff changed drastically, and he lost his soul gem. Instead he has two new smaller gems on his "ribcage".

This time around I tried to invoke more death themes, hence the ribcage, more wrappings, the halo, and the burn marks from, y'know, being re-baked and essentially reborn. The halo also makes for a nice double meaning, showing his somewhat good intentions behind the violence and spreading chaos gig.

Speaking of intentions, I maybe or maybe not have mentioned the only swaps happening in this proposed AU are between PV and WL and [possibly] Black Raisin and Red Velvet. I say maybe because if I checked, all the writing would disappear and I would have to start over again. However, I have wondered if those two swapped, how would PV handled the kingdoms? Would it be the same as DE or would the fates of each kingdom end up being swapped as well? It's something I definitely need to think on and develop.

Anyways, ramble break, here's a few doodles I did for Swap!PV!

Yeah, I had a lot of fun doing this. SO! A few changes not mentioned prior. Eyes! There are more eyes, especially on his coat. I took a bit of inspiration from a certain blue jester and his realm of nightmares. It also plays nicely with the whole "truth revealed" theme. Why not give the holder of the light of truth a bunch of opened eyes to represent his awakening? Also they looked good and his cape-coat was too plain without it.

Fun Head Canons: He's always floating, even when he's relaxing his feet never touch the floor. This PV still has a lily garden, it's just hidden away because while he still misses WL despite everything, he refuses to show weakness in front of others. His coat can take the shape of angel wings when angry and multiple eyes can appear when furious or in distress. Speaking of eyes, the ones on his coat glow. Those gems on him are pieces of moonstone that got corrupted after saving him.

As for the story behind him, I had to make a few adjustments. For one, DE and WL are two halves of the same whole, and the only reason either of them exists is thanks to precautions taken by Elder Faerie. Which means Pure Vanilla somehow has to get the stuff from Lily, who came to Beast Yeast without saying much of anything to anyone beforehand. Secondly, it means the Pure Vanilla Kingdom can't be the last kingdom explored. Pre Beast Yeast, the order in which the kingdoms would be explored would change, where White Lily's area would be explored first instead and the Vanilla Kingdom would be last. I'll address the second issue on a different post related to White Lily, but first things first. Fair warning, I wrote quite a bit.

After forming the seal, White Lily falls ill due to the immense amount of power used. She's not used to using so much of her soul gem, much less creating a seal to lock away ancient evils. Seeing her faltering state, Elder Faerie takes her away to his palace to help her recover. During her time in the palace, White Lily becomes distressed because not only does she feel like she's being a burden, but she won't be able to continue her research on how cookies were made. That was the whole point of coming here, after all. She left her friends and home behind to find the truth and ended up sick and bed ridden instead. The least she could do to redeem herself was to find the truth.

Racked with guilt and regret, she asks Elder Faerie for two favors; she wishes to know the secret behind cookies' creation, and she requests a pen and paper to write with. Before long, White Lily gains a messenger(Silverbell) who gives her books from the library to read, and a way to reach the one other person she understands. Someone who should've known where she was most of all. Pure Vanilla Cookie.

From there the two keep exchanging letters as White Lily brushes up on fae and beast lore. But eventually White Lily would learn about the Night of the Witches in a similar enough way to canon, i.e. finding the book about it. While she's recovered enough, she's still not well enough to go, and Elder Faerie isn't risking her well being and safety for a banquet. She's devastated that her questions may never be answered. If only she could go, if only there was some way to witness it while being in the Fairy Kingdom. And then... she realizes something. Perhaps there is a way for her to know after all...

White Lily, in the discomfort of her hospital bed, writes a letter to Pure Vanilla and asks him to go to the Witch's Banquet in her place. She knows that this is a huge ask, and he has every reason to refuse the favor, but it would mean the world to her if he did. Elder Faerie hears about this and is rightfully worried, telling her about the dangers, and any cookie that goes doesn't come back the same, if at all. He sends his own letter to Pure Vanilla to warn him of the dangers that lie ahead. A few more letters come in from WL apologizing for her request, saying it was out of line and inappropriate. "What a selfish request," she thinks, "after leaving him in the dark for so long, I have the nerve to ask him for anything at all?"

However, despite everything, he eventually decides to go. He knows that this means everything to her, and a part of Pure Vanilla secretly wondered about it as well. White Lily searched heaven and earth to find the truth so she could help others. Why would he keep avoiding it for so long? If he knew the truth as well, perhaps he could use these secrets to help the people of Earthbread alongside her. Maybe now he would finally understand White Lily more.

He wrote a letter addressed to both WL and EF about his final decision. White Lily is surprised at his decision, and is eternally grateful, while Elder Faerie is more resigned and concerned, knowing that he won't be able to change his mind but still wanting to help. He asks her to help write her next letter, and the two send a package to Pure Vanilla. Inside was another letter with the faint smell of lilies, as well as a map to the location of the banquet and a moonstone from Elder Faerie as a show of goodwill and for protection. He in turn sends what would become his final letter to her, unbeknownst to the two reading. He expresses his gratefulness to both WL and EF and declares his determination to find answers both for her and for the sake of everyone, stating, "Let me be your hope when you have none, and you my guiding light in shadows..."

Pure Vanilla proceeds to head to the Witch's Banquet, discovers the bitter truth, and in his attempts to save the other cookies falls into the ultimate dough. The fleeting scent of lilies is the last thing he grasps in his final moments, and the faint glow of a moonstone ensures his survival. His soul gem shatters under the weight of the truth and is scattered across the world, longing to be made whole once again.

I should probably post more in general, but here’s my once in a blue moon tumblr post, complete with a new au.

Paramnesia

A hypothetical AU where Shadow Milk wears Pure Vanilla down over time. Revolutionary new idea? Not exactly, but still fun!

Essentially, it starts shortly after resealing via the “Light of Truth”, where SM plants doubt and paranoia within PV. He tries to ignore it, instead following what WL told him [to listen to her voice instead], but obviously that’s not an effective solution… especially when she’s not there to help all the time, she has duties to attend to, and other cookies do not know how to help. Even worse when you’re plagued with nightmares and some minor hallucinations that may or may not just be your own mind without the Jester’s influence.

Realistically, it takes weeks, maybe even months, for it to become truly detrimental. PV becomes more anxious, choosing to distance himself and overall isolate more. Not just locking himself in his room, but also him just making excuses to get out of social interactions. He’s paranoid that SM is right, and that whatever he does is going to harm someone. He’s terrified that he’s becoming a huge burden on White Lily, he begins insisting that he can do this on his own, that she shouldn’t worry. This is, very obviously, not a good solution, but it is enabled, and only keeps getting worse.

At a certain point, SM stops the semantics and just has casual [degrading] conversation with him in his soul’s abyss. These meetings become more frequent as PV keeps falling further and further into despair, and he soon starts to play the role of being “supportive”, which makes PV feel dependent. “This cookie is the one that made you realize the truth of your actions, he’s helping you” is the kind of mindset he eventually instills within the fallen king.

After a while, PV is essentially at his lowest. It’s yet another meeting, and SM proposes a deal. A deal where they swap positions. One where Shadow Milk Cookie takes over the “show”, and Pure Vanilla Cookie resides permanently in the abyss. Where he can rest and let the one who “knows what he’s doing” take over. Shadow Milk even offers him fantasies of his ideal life, all he has to do is close his eyes. Pure Vanilla, essentially completely broken from the long term pressure, agrees.

Shadow Milk Cookie takes hold of the body, biding his time for his strength to return. His first objective is to rid of the tree, and fully free himself and his friends. He is in no rush, eons of waiting in that tree have made him desperate. Manipulating Pure Vanilla Cookie has retaught him patience. He simply needs to wait within his new vessel. A rushed attempt at freedom is a faulty one.

Pure Vanilla Cookie, in the meanwhile, settled nicely into the Dark Side of the Moon, his new home. Never quite asleep but never quite awake either, clinging to the lies and “dreams” he is fed. It’s… addictive, after so long in despair, he finally experiences joy. He can finally forget about his failures and life. He finally “gets” what he’s strived for, a world of peace.

All he has to do is close his eyes.

A calming spring breeze flows through the open window of the castle, allowing the luxurious royal-blue curtains to flow freely.

Pure Vanilla was sitting on a couch, peacefully reading pages from an old book.

Clinging to his sleeve was you; and boy were you a mess.

Just imagine it:

Tugging on those luscious blonde locks, the beautiful sounds he would make, and the blush that would cover his innocent little face.

Each little visual made your heart beat that much faster, and turned you into even more of dazed and lustful mess.

"Oh my Pure Vanilla, it is quiet breezy today. You look cold... would you like to use me as a blanket?"

You had a small smile on your face, along with a glint of mischief in your eyes.

Pure Vanilla, on the other hand, seemed very perplexed.

"Ah, I'm not cold. And if I were, I do not think you'd be the best blanket, love!" Pure Vanilla would laugh innocently before going back to reading his book.

Yet another failed attempt.

It seemed that no matter what hints you'd give, or what pick up lines you would recite, your lover would be all too unaware to realize the true meaning behind any of them.

Maybe.. you would have to be more direct?

Yes, that seems good! More physical contact, along with more sensual touches. Would he get the hint then?

You really just needed him to fulfill this craving you were harboring.

You just needed him to fulfill you.

You cupped the side of his face and brought him to look at you.

"Do you need something?" Pure Vanilla asked you sweetly.

There it was. The wonderful blush that spread across his face.

You could never forget this pure, precious, beautiful look...

"I need... you."

He averted his gaze from you and onto the floor nearby.

"Well, I'm right here so-"

There was a misunderstanding again.

Sometimes you wonder if he secretly liked seeing you get like this, and was simply leading you on.

You'd cut him off. "No, I mean I need you. You get it, don't you?"

Pure Vanilla's face burned a bright crimson as you left a lingering touch on his side, moving closer to him.

"You'll help me satisfy these feelings, won't you love?"

Pure Vanilla would let out a hitched breath before nodding slightly.

"Y- yes.."

My thoughts on the blue lock trailer while trying to combat the people hating on it:

• At least we fucking have one.

• The shadows/lines are quite jarring in comparison with season 1, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. It’s new, give it time.

• FOR THE RECORD IT HAD CGI LAST SEASON; DON’T ACT LIKE ITS NEW.

• Shidou looks very awesome and I’m so glad my guy Karasu is finally in it. I’ve been waiting for this one

• U-20 v Japan is probably really good for them to keep gatekeeping it (besides lineup spoilers) AND to have Isagi’s va say “they put everything into [it]”

• Everyone is overreacting. I think it’s really not that bad

“Are they still following us?” you asked, your voice breathless in the salty, sea air.  Your heart thudded in your chest, loud like the waves crashing nearby, as he held your body close to his.

“I don’t think so,” he replied, his breath warm on your forehead. 

You were excited when Victor received the cruise invitation and picked you and Elbert to go. It would be your first cruise; being the maiden voyage, it was going to be a week of glamour and glitz on the high seas. 

Oh, there was also that part about a mission.

You should have known. You should have known that where the Crown was involved, trouble followed. 

And boy, did trouble follow.

When the ship docked at port, it was time for Elbert to complete his mission and follow the ring of thieves to their hideout. It should have been simple – follow them, and discover the location of where they had been hiding the stolen goods. But things didn’t go as planned, and simple turned into a race for your lives.

“Run!”

Elbert grabbed your hand; he didn’t need to tell you twice it was time to run. You both made a mad dash down the alley. You ran away from the dockyard, as far as your feet could take you. Until you couldn’t feel the ground below you. 

You ran until you found yourself on a beach. 

Alone. Hopefully. 

You looked up at Elbert, your body shivering from the chill in the air. His eyes met yours, brilliant blue staring at you from the deep, dark sky. With a gentle touch, he brushed a stray lock of hair behind your ear.

“They’re gone,” he whispered. “We’re safe.”

There was a hint of something - adoring or possessive, maybe? - in his eyes as he stared into yours. You felt his arm tightening around your waist, his fingers pressing against your skin. 

The fear of being followed now gone, your body relaxed in Elbert’s arms, allowing yourself to finally feel the ground below you, the air above you, the arms around you. You took a step, steadying yourself in the soft sand, and found yourself tumbling, taking Elbert down with you.

Landing on your back, the wet sand cushioned your less-than-graceful fall to the ground. Elbert’s body hovered above yours, his hands cradling your head, your arms clinging to his shoulders, as the waves gently lapped around your bodies, the sound of the surf drowning out your heavy breathing.

“You’re safe,” he whispered, his lips dangerously close to yours. “You are safe.”

Unfortunately I’m 20364683627164840 weeks behind on all the anime I’m watching right now… I need to finish blue lock, rewatch mp100, start trigun and bnha s6… so it will probs be awhile before I even remember to check anything out…

What animes will I be watching in Winter 2023? (+ Staff Roundup) - Part 1

For leftovers from last season, I have Blue Lock and To Your Eternity 2, which I will continue to watch. Now on to the new shows! I will admit and say that Winter 2023 on paper doesn't seem like the most exciting season ever, however I have been surprised before.

Buddy Daddies: Direction: Asai Yoshiyuki Series Composition: Kakihara Yuuko, Shimokura Vio Character Design: Sako Souichirou Studio: P.A. Works

P.A. Works has always been known for their original animes more so than their adaptation of manga series. Though recently they did adapt a heartwarming show in Ya Boy Kongming! They're now back in their roots with Buddy Daddies, the latest original anime in their lineup. Right up in the vein of Spy X Family, Buddy Daddies appear to be a family-centric story about two people with a dangerous profession who becomes intertwined with a little girl. The premise alone makes it one of the more interesting shows coming out in Winter 2023. Asai Yoshiyuki is not a director I have a lot of experience with except for some of his work in Fate/Apocrypha a series I didn't end up finishing mostly because of my school schedule at the time (I ended up forgetting about it). But Fate/Apocrypha if anyone has any praise for it, it has to be the action. Though Yoshiyuki himself probably wasn't very much involved in that aspect as a lot of the action praise likely goes to the action director, who we'll be talking about in the Fate/Strange Fake section. From my memory and just checking out the screenshots that people are posting on Twitter, his layouts are fairly nice, though I don't think he makes the best use of his lighting. It's sometimes overly dark and too many effects applied honestly. Looking at the trailer for Buddy Daddies, here it doesn't seem to be suffering from those issues due to it being a different style of anime completely. It's much brighter and less cinematic so I don't think those issues will plague the show. I wish I can talk more about Asai Yoshiyuki but aside from some nice wide-shot layouts, that I've seen from him and the flaws I've mentioned. I don't have too much to say. I expect Buddy Daddies action direction to be a bit above what P.A. Works has done in the past from eyeing the trailer, but I wouldn't be expecting anything similar to the output in Fate/Apocrypha. It should be a fun time on paper similar to this season's Akiba Maid War, maybe slightly limited animation at times but it's campy and fun.

Fate/strange Fake: Whispers of Dawn (Special): Director: Enokido Shun, Sakazume Takahito Series Composition: ??? Character Design: Yamada Yuukei Studio: A-1 Pictures

My reason for watching this series is well... I watch every Fate series. At the time that I'm writing this, there hasn't been much footage of the actual anime. So only the last image is actually from the project, while the other 3 images are from Fate/Strange Fake PV from a couple years ago. However, the staff from that PV is returning to work on the special here, so it'll look very similar. To tell you the truth I was a little disappointed that it was A-1 Pictures again for a Fate project and especially with some similar staff not only is it the same character designer, but both of the directors also worked as action directors on Fate/Apocrypha. One of the praised aspects of Fate/Apocrypha was definitely its action, so this is a good sign for Strange Fake here.. But I'm just slightly disappointed. A majority of the Fate anime series have often been done by different studios. Shaft, ufotable Silver Link, Deen, Troyca, and of course A-1 Pictures. I would have loved to see another studio's take on a Fate series, but this is more of a personal gripe. From the small glimpses we saw of Prelati, I personally think she looks great in the anime. They've captured her personality really well with her look so big credit to Yamada Yuukei. I think the designs as far as I can tell seem much more appealing than the character designs in Fate/Apocrypha. Much bolder and more stylized. The composition of the scene is also really nice, varying different color tones throughout, with warm lighting playing favor to the character's face in an otherwise shot with a cool color range. It's unfortunate that this isn't a full series, but I'm for sure going to be watching this and it's likely one of the animes I'm most hyped about in Winter 2023 regardless of my small gripes with the repeat staff.

In/Spectre 2: Director: Gotou Keiji Series Composition: Takagi Noboru Character Design: Matsumoto Kentarou Studio: Brain's Base

I've for the most committed to watching most sequels of shows I've seen before as long as I didn't completely dislike them. In/Spectre Season 1 was something I had several positive things I liked about it. The main protagonist in Kotoko is very likable, I can't say the same about her boyfriend in Kuro though. I thought their relationship was very constrained. The anime overall had solid production as you would expect from a Brain's Base work, it didn't blow my mind or anything of the sort, but it was good enough to watch without ever complaining. I thought the 2nd half of the season was really starting to pick things up and the mystery surrounding Kuro's cousin is genuinely very interesting. Yet, I can't really completely forgive the first half of the story for its painfully slow pace. This is very much an extremely dialogue-heavy show, which is completely fine. But I think the show could've used more engaging storyboarding in general, the scenes in which Kotoko is working out her plans and interacting with the people online, whom she's trying to convince to change the rumors of Steel Lady Nanase was done in a visual representation of a debate room in this almost like empty purple space. All of these could have been really cool, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired with plain shots and lackluster background design. It felt stationary and just very bland, making an empty purple void feel constrained when really it should feel vast and endless. I have had similar gripes with the dullness of the director, Gotou Keiji's work before in a series called Endride. That being said, I did enjoy Kotoko's breakdown of the case and her different tactics in trying to best Rikka. It was probably the most entertaining part of the series for me alongside with the interesting takes on spirits/ghosts designs throughout the show. I have higher expectations for Season 2 regarding the story because it seems like they're going to be exploring deeper into Rikka's story and her motive which is shrouded in mystery.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea : Director: Andou Hiroaki Series Composition: Murai Sadayuki Character Design: Fukushi Ryouhei, Kotani Kyouko Studio: Polygon Pictures

From the creator of Blame! and Knights of Sidonia, comes another CG anime in Kaina of the Great Snow Sea helmed by Blame! and Ajin director Andou Hiroaki. Polygon Pictures alongside Studio Orange are probably regarded as two of the best fully CG anime studios in the industry (with Orange receiving more of the praise) and this anime looks to be no different. The models have a very nice cel-shaded look to them similar to many of their animes, looking almost 2D in some shots. The environment makes good use of being 3D by being extremely large and the camera being able to display it all as it's a 3D environment. Hiroaki has worked with many CG shows in the past, so this will be nothing new for him especially when he's already worked on Tsutomu Nihei's other creations before. He is a very flexible director who while he specializes in 3D, makes very good use of 2D assets which can be seen in the extremely creative and also disappointing 2020 anime, Listeners. I don't have much to say about this due to the lack of knowledge of the story, but the staff is solid and the trailer showcases some impressive and large-scale environments that are nice to look at. I look forward to this one quite a bit.

Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible: Director: Koga Kazuomi Series Composition: Takahashi Yuuya Character Design: Saitou Yoshiko Studio: Pine Jam

Pine Jam is a studio that has been around for quite some time but hasn't been that active throughout. Releasing only 7 shows since it's establishment in 2015, however, its presence has been noted. Many animated shows from them have a very particular look when it comes to how it's animated. They experimented quite a bit with breaking the style for different scenes to establish a different effect. From just messing around in a slice-of-life anime by providing a surreal visual to break the established norm of the series, to breaking models in combat scenes to establish impact and movement, the studio historically has had very interesting ideas. Their final products also come out fairly refined without much for me to nag on. I don't know much about Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible, except for the synopsis provided on MyAnimeList and Anilist, but it seems to be the most well-regarded source material that Koga Kazuomi has had the opportunity of directing. Most people probably know him from the now infamous series, Rent-a-Girlfriend, but looking at that show from a purely directional and storyboarding standpoint, it is a charming piece of work that displays Kazuomi's strength quite well. Just check out the opening of the Season 1 of the show, it utilizes interesting color palettes in the background to provide emphasis on the makeshift panels of the characters dancing in a very cute way. His boards tend to have also quite expressive facial expressions that are cute. This should fit the cute high school vibe that Kubo seems to also have. I look forward to seeing what interesting experimental cuts, the Pine Jam staff plans to sneak into this little show and it should be a fun chill time.
