In Biblioteca puoi scoprire autori e opere che non conoscevi o di cui avevi sentito parlare ma che ancora non avevi avuto modo di leggere. Ed è per questo che abbiamo deciso di dedicare un angolo alla scoperta di questi "tesori nascosti". 

Oggi l'opera e l’autore prescelti sono: “Viaggio al termine della notte" di Louis-Ferdinand Céline.

Ho sempre un po’ di timore ad accostarmi a quelle opere considerate capolavori letterari, letture di una potenza e intensità tali da influenzare un’epoca, il pensiero, informare di sé l’intero panorama culturale del tempo. Tuttavia, sono stata ben felice di superare questo “timore” cimentandomi nella scrittura e nello stile di questo autore ritenuto uno dei più influenti scrittori del XX secolo, celebrato per aver dato avvio ad uno stile letterario nuovo, “moderno”. E così mi sono immaginata a percorrere le vicende di questo romanzo semi-autobiografico di Céline, la cui famosa introduzione mi aveva già inevitabilmente ammaliata: «Viaggiare è proprio utile, fa lavorare l’immaginazione. Tutto il resto è delusione e fatica. Il viaggio che ci è dato è interamente immaginario. Ecco la sua forza. Va dalla vita alla morte. Uomini, bestie, città e cose, è tutto inventato. È un romanzo, nient’altro che una storia fittizia. Lo dice Littré, lui non sbaglia mai. E poi in ogni caso tutti possono fare altrettanto. Basta chiudere gli occhi. È dall’altra parte della vita».

Da queste parole in poi anch'io ho iniziato il mio personale viaggio insieme all'autore all'interno di questo romanzo cupo e nichilistico, governato da un senso di profonda e inconsolabile sfiducia verso la natura umana, le istituzioni umane, la società e la vita in generale. Questa visione cinica si è scontrata quasi ad ogni passo col mio atteggiamento, all'opposto, entusiasta e fin troppo sognante nei confronti del reale, instaurando una vera e propria tensione agonica con certi atteggiamenti del protagonista Ferdinand Bardamu, giovane soldato nella Prima guerra mondiale e di Léon Robinson, antieroe sventurato e ambiguo nonché simbolicamente coscienza di Bardamu. 

Lo stile di Céline è molto particolare e, mediante l'ampio ricorso a ellissi, iperboli e parole gergali, appare perfetto nel riflettere senza abbellimenti o attenuanti i discutibili protagonisti delle vicende narrate. Non è stata una lettura semplice, piuttosto si è trattato di un'esperienza globale che ha necessitato di tempi lunghi di elaborazione; curiosando, poi, come sempre faccio a proposito degli autori in cui mi imbatto, ho scoperto che Bukowski aveva un'altissima considerazione di Céline (lo cita in diverse opere) e in un'intervista, alla domanda sul perché apprezzasse Céline, risponde con queste parole: "Perché si è tolto fuori le viscere e ci ha riso sopra. Un uomo molto coraggioso. [Il coraggio] è una questione di stile. L'unica cosa che ci è rimasta".

Qualche cenno sull’autore…

Louis-Ferdinand Céline, pseudonimo di Louis Ferdinand Auguste Destouches (1894 – 1961) è stato uno scrittore, saggista e medico francese, considerato un originale esponente delle correnti letterarie del modernismo e dell'espressionismo. Lo pseudonimo, con cui firmò tutte le sue opere, era il nome della nonna materna Céline Guillou. Partecipò volontario alla prima guerra mondiale, rimanendo ferito gravemente e parzialmente invalido, nonché segnato psicologicamente per sempre dall'esperienza. Per le sue prese di posizione politiche e affermazioni in favore delle potenze dell'Asse, prima e durante la Seconda guerra mondiale (si espresse anche in favore del collaborazionismo della Francia di Vichy con la Germania nazista dopo la sconfitta del 1940), esposte in pamphlet violentemente antisemiti, Céline rimane oggi una figura controversa e discussa. Emarginato dalla vita culturale dopo il 1945, il suo stile letterario fu preso a modello da alcuni scrittori che gravitavano attorno alla Beat Generation statunitense. La diffusione delle sue opere soffrì inizialmente a causa della sua evoluzione antisemita e filonazista; Céline era spesso trascurato dai libri di testo nei paesi europei, Italia inclusa. Il suo nuovo editore, Gaston Gallimard (fondatore della Éditions Gallimard, nonché cugino e socio di Michel Gallimard, editore di Camus e altri celebri scrittori) riuscì, tuttavia, a ribaltare la situazione.
