Book 38 of 2023 The Witch and the Vampire by @francescafloresauthor Thank you to @netgalley and @wednesdaybooks for the eARC. I really liked this one. Ava and Kaye are full of magic and secrets. Ava is on the run from her mother and step-dad, Kaye just wants to know who killed her mother - she thinks it's Ava (her former best friend). The forest provides a means of escape... but the forest has its own secrets. This is very YA, and I would have no problem recommending this to younger teens. The romance is very minor and sweet. 4 out of 5 stars. Recommend for those that liked The Midnight Girls or Cinderella is Dead. It shows how the Criminal Tribes Act of 1871 by British changed the fate of few communities forever. Although the government after independence repealed the act, it brought another similar inhuman act called the Habitual Offender's Act which continued to affect the people of these communities in unimaginable ways. It shows not all criminals chose to become one but they were forced into this profession by society. It shows how these people were used as puppets in the hands of few power-hungry people for their benefits and turned a few into criminals. Vikram Chhara, born in Chhara Tribe is an expert in committing crimes. He was manipulated by few political forces to commit few atrocities that he is regretting years later. He meets a rag picker one day who unfolds his past and provides him with all the answers to his unsolved questions. This is a story of mistakes, atrocities, communal violence, finding peace, redemption and forgiveness. The author showcased these sensitive issues brilliantly in his book. The riots, violence and the sufferings of the people were very heart wrenching to read. The twists and turns will keep you hooked till the end. Book 34 of 2023 How To Keep House While Drowning by @strugglecare I had this book in my to buy cart for several months and couldn't bring myself to push the buy button until I saw it at my local indie @bpmoscow and grabbed it off the shelf. I loved this book and its message. This is short, sweet, and direct. This is for anyone who struggles with caring (for their living environment, for themselves), giving concrete actions that can help, while acknowledging that some days are better than others.
