Game Dev Blog 03: Collision Detection Cont.

Issues💾

Issue: grid based collision detection does not work well for isometric game view because we have a staggered step of blocks that do not conform to the angle of the floor lines where we should walk (See below)

Solution: transform the game map into an X/Y based grid to draw the collision boxes accurately

However, a new problem arises. Now we have a difference between what is shown on the screen vs where our collision boxes are

The solution is to have a game space and the visual space (being rendered to screen) to be separated but interact in the following way

We'll do our collision detection in the game space (where our collision boxes exist). Thus, we need to transform the position of our character from the visual space -> game space

I created a skew, scale and transformation matrix to perform this calculation on the coordinate point of the player

To do:

Implement matrix math on the boundary box position instead of the character position🔲

i think its really interesting (read: disturbing) that we as a trans community tout the fluidity and non-binary nature of sex to transphobes (i.e. "there are more than two sexes", which is true), but then seemingly forget it when it comes to concepts like "afab transfem" and "amab transmasc"

we acknowledge that intersex people have complex relationships with sex as a gotcha when speaking with transphobes, and then accuse the same people we used as a talking point of being transphobic for having a complex relationship with sex

we say "afab" intersex women can grow beards, have heightened testosterone, have ambiguous genitalia, have low voices, be perceived as men - and then deny them the word "transfem" to describe their experiences

we say "amab" intersex men can grow breasts, have heightened estrogen, have ambiguous genitalia, have high voices, be perceived as women - and then deny them the word "transmasc" to describe their experiences

we know that the sex someone is assigned can change based on different doctors or events in their life - but then tell them that "there's a word for a cis person who identifies as their assigned sex" as if they can easily be lumped in with cis perisex people

if someone has a relationship with their sex that is not cut and dry, are they exclusively meant to use the word "intersex" to describe their experiences? are intersex people simply not allowed to use transgender language to talk about themselves?

I think some people need the reminder that you can just not like things. For whatever reason. You don't need to justify things you don't like to anyone, as long as you're not making people feel bad for liking it.

You're able to not like something, but that doesn't make it weird.

You're able to not like that people like something, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad people (within reason of course)

And it's also important to remember that you may like something that other people don't like. That doesn't mean they have a personal vendatta against you for liking it.

That doesn't mean you're wrong, nor are they wrong.

People have preferences for everything. Just because you prefer something, that doesn't mean you're "right". This is fandom, there are very few things that even have a "right" and "wrong" side.

I am not Folly or the Dreamer, this is just an AU I thought would be fun to mess around with. I'll have a section with some details regarding the AU further down.

My pronouns are he/they/it, Folly and Dreamer are both She/Her.

I am a bit rusty and shaky in playing Folly so pardon any bumps as I learn.

I am OPEN for cross-universe interactions, interactions in general, and overall silly things.

-------------------Story Information--------------------- The Dreamer is a reincarnation from a fragment of Folly's shattered mask post-cleave. However, her earliest memory is the great ones betrayal, and none of what followed. Similar to Folly, she doesn't trust easily anymore, but is a lot more scared and confused than anything.

The relationship between the two is strained, but protective. Folly often ends up speaking for Dreamer to elevator goers, but Dreamer is slowly regaining trust in the world, much to Folly's bitter displeasure.

Folly in this AU is a lot snippier than typical, and more outright mean in some cases, but also unintentionally showing another side to her in the instinctive protectiveness over the fragile innocence of her old self.

Dreamer 'lives' in a hollow known as 'Dreamers Hollow'. The Elevator cannot visit this location (yet). Visitors have to take a path through Eternal Limbo provided by Folly to visit her.

Dreamer is not allowed to leave the hollow/area/eternal limbo without permission and is discouraged from wandering.

Dreamers close and only friends are Lampert, Poob and Infected (Kasper). She met them while [redacted]

Folly is easily flustered if you catch her off guard.

Universe wise: Folly is aware there are multiple timelines, and many ocs/other versions of canon characters are not from this AU's timeline. Dreamer however, is not.

Also, they can only form from trauma so the additional disorders wouldn't be relevant except in the way that being autistic in today's society is inherently traumatic.

Noticed a particularly touching detail in the Warbird section of EAA AirVenture yesterday, July 24. And I’m not going to lie, I got a little emotional.

All of the wheel chocks being used in the warbirds area were painted drab green with white bars ends and white stenciled text. On one side was stenciled the words “FIGHTERTOWN” accompanied by two little silhouettes of P-51 Mustangs

The other said “REMEMBERING SNORT”

Dale “Snort” Snodgrass is a legend in aviation, “one of the most highly regarded military pilots” and “one of the best fighter pilots of all time.”

Snort will forever hold the record for the most hours in the F-14 Tomcat with a total of 4800 hours out of his total 8000 flight hours over the span of his highly-decorated 27-year naval career. He both attended and taught at TOPGUN, was the commanding officer of a Fighter Squadron, and was an F-14 Tomcat Demonstration Pilot for 10 years.

If you don’t know of Snort, you might know of this famous picture of an F-14 Tomcat being piloted by Snort.

The plane is on its side for a high-speed, low-level pass with the wings fully extended and the wingtips below the level of the flight deck of the USS America all while in full afterburner. Don’t worry, despite what you might hear this “banana pass” was both planned and approved.

After he retired from active duty he returned to the air show circuit, flying in over 850 airshows before his death.

On July 24, 2021, Snort was killed when his SIAI-Marchetti SM. 1019 crashed while taking off at an airshow in Idaho. We will forever keep him in our hearts and minds. His spirit lives on in every plane that crosses into an Airshow box.
