I think the most beautiful thing about writing of Howl and Sophie's pair is that they are written as people before being written as a pair. Let me explain this very quick.

The thing about book Sophie and Howl is that they are not really fully fitting into any "classic" romantic trope. They are not exactly enemies to lovers, as their angry chats are definitely cannot be considered a life or death battle, they are not rivals to lovers because the only aspect of rivalry between them is the cleaningness of Howl's room. They are not friends to lovers, as their relationship just doesn't fit into "friendship" structure at the very start, nor they are roomates (yes, they live in the same house but that's not the core aspect of their relationships). Of course, you can go on and fit the name of the trope you found specifically for them, but that's the thing.

They simply cannot be processed through a pairings lenses only, in order to understand how they act in relationship you need to analyse them separately, as a characters first of all. Cause that's what the book itself does!

Sure, it doesn't have a whole lot of romance instead, but it gives us time to learn and observe the life of incredibly written, alive characters, understand them as personalities first of all, while slowly immersing the dynamic between two characters (in this case, Howl and Sophie) into work. They are written as personalities, both being fully separated and interviewing, changing eachother's point of view.

It's difficult to find a trope for them. They're are not a trope. They are Howl and Sophie, and that's probably the only way their dynamic can be properly described. Just as real people, they are not really fitting into the boxes of linial character progression, but go way deeper into being complex, filled with little differences and moments only people with their personality can have in romantic (or any different) kind of interaction. They're imperfect, and silly, and multidimensional and the reader knows them well enough to imagine them interacting way beyond of what the book says to them.

They are being people before being a ship, a pair of a trope — and that's why they work so perfectly charming in the end.

Howl and Sophie are unique in being themselves.

aftg au where bee adopted andrew and later aaron when they were teens. she owns an apple orchard that the twins and occasionally a few of the foxes help run but it's almost harvest season and she needs help prepping everything for the town's fall festivals so she decided to put up a help wanted ad. neil, tired, alone, and running out of options, decides to apply. bee let's him use the renovated barn loft as residence when she learns he's homeless. andrew is wary, his family means everything to him and neil is a flightly little thing that could only bring bad news, but something about neil is familiar. maybe it's how he checks all his exits or how he flinches when people touch him or how he cradles the key bee gave him in his palm like it was a treasure instead of a piece of metal. he asks neil for truths and it's like bleeding a rock but he finds neil is more willing when truth is reciprocated. they spend their days walking down the lines of apple trees, harvesting and talking, and andrew is only a little mesmerized with the way neil's auburn curls blend with the red of the apples and his eyes match the sky like something deliberate, like he was meant to be here. andrew thinks that maybe he doesn't hate how neil looks at him like he's worth something. andrew thinks that maybe he doesn't want to lose this. he's still learning how to accept that not everything is transactional, he doesn't need to make deals to keep people close, hes still figuring out how to want things without the fear of them being snatched away. his mind screams at him to turn away and push any feeling aside but then neil is handing him an apple and smiling and telling him stories he says he's never told anyone else and andrew doesn't think he deserves this but he wants it

i don’t think rhaenyra would call it like a condition on her love, i think in slightly different (safer) circumstances jacaerys could eventually prod her into talking about harwin and yet i do think jacaerys feels like there is a sort of condition on how much she is capable of loving him because she refuses to be direct with him about the harwin of it all, and it’s not even really on jacaerys for being resentful because it’s like - she knows what it’s like to mourn a parent when you’re young and she knows what it’s like to feel undermined by the parent you are supposed to be the heir of, but she completely cuts off his ability to mourn & understand his own father even in privacy with her (she Will Not Speak The Truth even when he asks when they’re alone and she does that TWICE!!!), and pretends like it’s not a horrible thing to do to him. but if she admits that she maybe hurt jacaerys’ feelings when she refused to tell him anything about his father even after his father died & then got remarried .2 seconds later and just expected him to roll with it, then she also has to admit viserys hurt her by marrying her best friend .2 seconds after he killed her mom and that completely destroys the way she has conceptualize the last two decades of her life. he’s telling her directly as he is capable of to her face that something has gotta give and she is saying “i don’t know what you’re talking about everything is fine.” well eventually, that’s just not gonna work anymore lmao.

I’m glad you’re liking it! Unfortunately as much as I’d like to type everything up so its easier for y’all to read, I’m trying to keep this as stress-free for me as possible so I don’t burn out. The extra effort of typing up all the text doesn’t sound like much but I know myself well enough to know that if I add one more step to posting I’d very likely end up just not drawing or doing anything at all. If i had a bit more energy I’d be so down to do it but unfortunately for now y’all might have to put up with my occasional blurry chicken scratch :’D

We went out to our first ever straight racing meet today. I was intending to just talk to people, check things out, and let Misty observe, but she had an opportunity to do a practice run and we took it! This is right after I caught her and got her off to the side, do you think she loved it??

There is the usual plastic bunny I'm familiar with, but there's also a squeaky stuffed animal that makes noise as it bounces along the ground and. This is a dog who is obsessed with the bunny. This thing had her in full crazy mode. I've never seen her run so intently. She is muzzle trained, because I've been wanting to try this someday, but today was her first time running in it. Muzzle? Forgotten. We'll have to go out again and get more box practice, but she's otherwise good to go!

non fiction i an interested in reading & have been for awhile but haven’t gotten around too. p sure there’s been second editions published since i put them on my lists 🤧

stuff i’m reading bc it has to do with my areas of interest re: writing. i’ve been interested in horror & building suspense, who Doesn’t turn to ursula le guin when they’re trying to write fantasy, 2-3 of the main characters are inuit in my own writing so i just read (and watch) random shit so i don’t sound like im talking out of my ass.

stuff i want to read but it’s been hard to find them. i’ve checked every legal channel i know to not have to pay for we shall be no more & it is Nawt available for less than $50. im like 70% sure i’ll be able to get a request filled for the other two but it’s a lil hit or miss sometimes when you’re requesting from a university library.
