“[...] as long as ignorance and misery live on earth, books such as this one could possibly not be useless”
—Victor Hugo, preface of “Les Misérables”
i had this oc in my head for quite some time and i reaaaally wanted to draw him
i have an undying love for hugo's works, he is a genius, and i'm a hopeless romantic soul so yes, if i had to design a bsd oc, it had to be victor hugo
some facts about him :
—it absolutely doesn't show on this drawing but he's an ENFP
—he's a temporary member of the ADA after yosano met him in the street. he was fighting with his ability and screaming about justice
—he was basically kinda homeless before joining the ADA, but didn't really mind it, he met people and slept here and there and he liked it
—he just got his literature diploma in france and decided to go explore new countries in order to learn other cultures but he's super messy and chaotic and super super broke
—random fact about his design, i absolutely wanted to give him a gavroche in reference of a hugo's character, gavroche, that died fighting for his rights and his liberty
—kunikida's gonna question his whole sexuality and life plans and feelings when they meet for the first time
—yep, babe's gonna panic when he realizes he's in love with the french anarchist
—dazai is the first to notice (of fucking course) and proceeds to both annoy him and help him processing it
—victor's ability allows him to create a space where violence is prohibited. absolutely nobody can get hurt nor hurt anybody, the only thing allowed is talking. victor chooses who can enter and leave this space
—he is the embodiment of empathy and generosity (that's also why he's broke), he is a very sensitive soul that just wanna see inequalities and violence burn in the hell fire
—he's a huge fan of muse, cavetown and renaud
—fun fact, nobody understands a word when he's listening to renaud's songs and just assume he's relaxing but the lyrics are actually the most angry and anarchist and anti capitalist and rude lyrics you've ever heard
i could say so much more and i want to think about him even more but i'll stop there. anyway, i have some more wip of him on photoshop so i'll post about him again pretty soon (﹡ˆ﹀ˆ﹡)
kiss kiss fall in love everybody 💚

there’s something about bsd fics written by people who have read and enjoyed classics (usually the irl version of the characters) that hits different

while i am on the topic of bungou's author-characters btw, i think i understood how it's fictionalisation real writer figures works better once i realised bsd characters aren't caricatures of the authors as people, but more personifications of the collective literary oeuvre of said authors; the characters are adapted from their writing, rather than the people. obviously, the line gets blurred fairly frequently, for instance in references like the iconic photograph of dazai sitting cross-legged on the bar stool, but a degree of ambiguity is natural, when the boundary between real writers' construction of their selfhood and the construction of their artistic creations is so unstable anyway, hence why it's natural and smart to have bsd's author-characters so often motivated by trying to write narratives of their own selfhood, once again blurring the boundaries in this sort of many-layered tension between irl author's selfhood vs their fiction vs fictionalised bsd author's selfhood vs their fiction vs the fiction they are a part of (asagiri's). but generally speaking though. i think the characters are easier read as representations of the author's work, than as loose recreations of the authors themselves

I just discovered that Mary Shelley and Kunikida share a birthday (August 30th), which is funny because Asagiri also made them similar in other ways (blond, glasses, abilities related to creating things, have beef with the government, etc.)

While she was still alive, I did not think Hinako was more precious than the other children. But now that she's gone, she looks the best, and now I feel I don't need the remaining 6 children

what's your fave relationship of bsd mori?
(ex: mori and fukuzawa, mori and dazai, etc.)
Interesting question!
My favorite is his relationship with Ozaki Kouyou
They are extremely close and trust each other which is extremely obvious
Ougai gave her the opportunity to leave the mafia... She didn't
She genuinely chose to help Mori and continue working for him WITHOUT BEING FORCED TO
The parallels of Ougai and Ozaki, Chuuya's bio parents AND Rintarou Mori's parents are 🛐🛐🛐
I find amazing the fact that his right hand is a woman and I find it amazing because real life Ougai Mori, Rintarou Mori, did listen to women when he was alive, he didn't have the same opinion on them compared to his macho society (Rintarou was born in 1862 and died in 1922)... And it was so much that real life Akiko Yosano let Rintarou Mori name two children
Ougai Mori character was genuinely sad with the idea of losing her it breaks my heart
Ougai is extremely empathetic with her, he understands her feelings completely and I see it by the way he speaks with her I'm like 🥹💖
Ozaki Kouyou respects Ougai Mori but also jokes with him, orders him to shut up, and Ougai listens to her

I'm dissapointed in the lack of bsd ocs that are based off of authors.
Y'all! There are so many famous authors and you're telling me that none of them have been adapted into bsd ocs??? Where my Shakespeare oc? Where's my Doyle oc? Like picture it Hinton with an ability based on the outsiders!!!! that be fucking wild!
