young fukuzawa was sent by the government to kyoto to assassinate a traitor.

he was instructed that for the duration of his mission, he will be staying in a gov’t-affiliated traditional hotel whose owner is a veteran secret intelligence officer who will be providing him more information about the traitor. there, he meets a beautiful geisha named kin.

he arrived at the hotel and on his first night, he wandered into the dining room where his eyes landed on the beautiful countenance of a geisha named kin. the first time he saw her, she was playing the shamisen for a small audience of hotel clients. after her performance and as everyone was applauding her, her eyes lingered on fukuzawa for a while, knowing that he’s the famous and handsome Silver Wolf that the entire hotel personnel have been waiting for. she smiled at him but given his cold personality, which she also heard about, he broke the eye contact without a smile and left.

in the one week that he stayed in the hotel, the elderly hotel owner provided more information and helped him plan and prepare thoroughly for the mission.

kin also tried to get to know him. but with his usual aloof and mysterious self, he only gave one-word or one-phrase answers and cut their conversations short. however, the ever so curious and relentless kin didn’t give up and eventually, fukuzawa warmed and opened up to her, finding himself more and more comfortable in her presence. and all this while, he kept asking in the back of his mind why kin was so interested in him.

on the night of the assassination, kin saw him off and told him to take care before he left. hoping to see him again and spend more time with him, she also told him that he’s welcome to return and stay longer in the hotel even after the mission is completed. fukuzawa didn’t give a definite response on whether he’ll return, but he thanked her.

kin waited for him all night, until she fell asleep. she woke up with a start. hoping that fukuzawa returned, she briskly went to his room. slowly opening the sliding door, she was extremely delighted to see him sleeping soundly on his mat.

fukuzawa decided to stay another week in the hotel in the guise of wanting to rest after the continuous missions he has done these past months. but truthfully, he found himself yearning for kin and he wanted to get to know her more and be with her even just for a little longer.

during the extension of his stay, they enjoyed each other’s company to the fullest while doing a variety of things: kin performed musical pieces for fukuzawa and she even taught him the basics of how to play the shamisen. they ordered everything in the menu and ate those together. when they ran out of activities, they lazed around in fukuzawa’s room and talked about life and asked everything they wanted to know about each other.

as the hotel staff were putting away the bodies and cleaning the aftermath of the attack, fukuzawa couldn’t help but reflect on true nature of his life, his job, and the dangers of it all. he realized the bitter truth that in order to keep kin safe and happy, he would have to leave her.

kin persuaded him that she could endure everything, that she’d be supportive, and that she wouldn’t be a burden for him. but fukuzawa has made up his mind. right before leaving, he stood in silence as kin was crying behind him. he was hesitating whether to admit to her that the days he spent with her were truly the best days of his life and that she taught him to open his heart and be honest with his feelings. he badly wanted to admit those to her, tell her that she changed his life, but he knew that it would even make things more painful for kin. kin was in tears as he left.

many years later, soon after the Armed Detective Agency was established and fukuzawa has retired from being an assassin, he could no longer fight the urge to secretly visit kin and see how she’s doing. despite the many years that have passed, he couldn’t forget her after all. he’s been missing her terribly and he wanted to see her, even from a distance.

he saw that she already had a family, a husband and a toddler daughter. they were having fun at the park. a combination of feelings coursed through him all at the same time: he was surprised, happy for her, and partially regretful. he couldn’t help but imagine that he’s your husband and the father of your daughter. but he quickly shook his head to push away the thought before he got too depressed. he watched kin with a painful smile, telling himself that this is the last time he’ll check on her.

“You’re not my homeland anymore, so what am I defending now?”

kin noticed a man walking away. she wasn’t sure who this man was as his back was turned to her, and yet she felt that something about this man was familiar and striking. she fixed her eyes on his figure and eventually realized who it was. she was in shock as she thought that she would never see fukuzawa again since the night he left her many years ago. although she wanted to chase him and talk to him as an old friend, she decided not to. past is past.
