Clearing out some prompt debt. The prompt was: 

11. things you said when you were drunk

Here I was, thinking I’d do something goofy and cute with it, but you want to be tortured, you say? Somehow, a certain scene from early S4 comes to mind.

She’s been dealing as good as she’s been getting. She deserves it - she knows she does - but it still stings to have it thrown back in her face. (It wouldn't feel like this if it weren’t true.)

She wants to snarl something back at him, shred all the overly hopeful, painfully naive predictions about her prospects he’d insisted on spouting when she’d first told him it was back. He’d tried so hard to put a positive spin on things, but it’s clear - painfully so - that he’s never seen doloxan work up close. It’s easy - so easy - to dismiss the treatment as a foregone conclusion when you haven’t smelled the vomit, cleaned the sores that won’t heal, prepared meal after palatable meal only to throw them away uneaten. And for what? A death that’s slower and messier. 

And of course she’ll die alone. Everyone does, in the end. They might be around you. Next to you. But nobody can be with you as you take that final step.

But meaningless?

Afraid her death would be meaningless? Where the frak did he get off? Every pilot, every crewman aboard the ship believed that if they died in the line of duty, it meant something. He said as much at every funeral and he made sure they believed it, because it was that thing, that kernel of promised valor that let the rest of them face it, day in and day out. But hers would be meaningless. Frakker.

So much for his rosy frakking outlook and his delusional insistence that it would all work out. She should’ve known taking him up on the offer of hospitality was a mistake. They still have the dregs of a civilization to run and even with the tears out of her system, she can’t quite imagine facing him again. Not now. 

Oh, she’d played her part, too - showed her claws, and let out a side of herself she’d almost forgotten about - catlike and vicious, looking for the weak spots to strike. She wouldn’t deny that now but with so much weight on her shoulders, a drunken Bill Adama is one more burden she cannot take.

There is an impulse, however brief, to leave that fistful of hair behind. Let him find it. Let him see. Let him clean up the mess for once and know - really know - what they're in for. Petty. Childish. Passive agressive. She wads up the strands and stuffs them in a pocket. Sets the impulse aside. Washes her face and sets about finding somewhere else to be.

Alright, friends. The sequel to One Dear Perpetual Place has crossed 100k words and I hope to start posting it soon. In the meantime, anyone wanna play hangman to figure out the title?

I just want to see them happily retiring together, with him as a Battlestar Commander turned househusband, and her as the Secretary of Education, a working wife. Then, years later, a party asks her to run for presidency, and she gets elected, and they become the unstoppable power couple they are.

(Also not me, trying to write a fanfic where they first meet at the Galactica decommissioning ceremony and then fall in love. Adar regrets losing her, especially to an aging soldier he deems unworthy and socially inferior.

He even insults them, saying she's playing a matador, messing around with a Tauron bull, and trying to SA her. But she punches him in the face (because Bill taught her boxing skill), and it's all caught on camera. Suddenly, she's the talk of the town, praised for defending herself against assault and becomes the new face of #metoo.

And Tauron people all become fans of her because she chose to defend her Tauron partner and chose him over the frakking President of the Twelve Colonies himself. And baby Kyliegh Curran as Lenore Usher, may or may not be their granddaughter from Lee and Dee, who's so close to and loved by her grandparents <3

But since English isn't my first language and I'm so busy with work and adulthood, I don't even know if I could find time to continue drafting this shite. I just love Roslin x Adama in AUs without the attack soooo sooo bad.)

Feedback Fest 2024

Since everything I've read for the past 1.5 years has been pilots, all 10 of the fics here are Kara/Lee from Battlestar Galactica. I'm only listing one fic per author, so be sure to check individual author pages if you liked their style.

1. In the Whole World by pennyante (M, ~80K, WIP)

Summary:

The Cylons aren't quite human, and the humans haven't quite forgiven them. Political stability is less certain than ever now that the war is over: Lee Adama finds himself up for re-election, where being defeated will mean a Gemenese theocracy puppeteered by Leoben Conoy. Meanwhile, Kara Thrace has nothing but questions about her death and destiny. The only answers available come in the form of the vision of a temple, and from her hybrid/comatose husband's cryptic ramblings about a sister artifact to the Arrow of Apollo.

There's violence in the air. Civil war looms. Can Lee and Kara save each other, and keep the fledgling colony whole?

Thoughts: The best season 4 fix-it, lives in my head rent free, rewired my brain, etc. Also I've read it, like, 3 times (and I cried).

2. We're Not Friends by ninety6tears (M, ~25K)

Summary:

When two soldiers in the middle of a war can't seem to like each other, baptism by fire is apparently the natural solution. (AU in which Kara never knew Zak and first meets Lee after the fall of the colonies.)

Thoughts: I love a different first meeting AU, and this one takes pilots on a fun rivals to lovers spin that works surprisingly well. They're still very unwell about each other, though, make no mistake.

3. Artemis Rising by clairza (M, ~11K)

Summary:

The next morning Lee makes a few phone calls, and when everything has been organized and his credit card has been used for the first time in three months, and he’s had the pleasure of telling his mother that no, he has plans this week, he tracks Kara down in the quad. 

She's lying on her stomach poking sticks upright in the grass. He sits down beside her, and he can see the tension in her shoulders.

“So,” he says casually, and he’s very proud of the way his voice doesn’t shake at all. “I hear the Aegean Peninsula is nice this time of year.”

“It probably is.”

“I’ve booked a unit.”

“Where are you going with this, Lee?” Thoughts: I have a huge soft spot for fluffy academy pilots and this fic absolutely delivers. Happy baby pilots go to the beach five stars no notes.

4. An Arranged Meeting by lark_ral (E, ~11K)

Summary: Even outside of wartime, you might be surprised by the pressures our service men and women are under. The most effective among them either have, or need a release valve. Thoughts: Lee and Kara are scene partners for years, then the Cylons come. Somehow less messy than the show, but still delicious.

5. Rota by leda13 (E, ~2K)

Summary: The days are arbitrary, in space. Bereft of the guide of a planet's rotation around the sun, they live in slices of time, stealing as many as they can. Thoughts: Emotional support curtain fic of pilots sneaking around.

6. Sufficient to the Day by rachelindeed (T, ~1.5K)

Summary: At the sound of Lee’s voice, she feels her stomach twist and drop. Reluctantly, she opens her eyes and sees him come to a stop an arm’s length away, settling one elbow onto the corner of the bleacher behind her. His jacket is unbuttoned, his hair mussed, jaw ghosted with stubble, and the frakking sun is rising behind him. The look on his face is casual and fond, but he breathes as if he’s been running. Thoughts: Mandatory UB morning after fix-it...sort of. I really like this one because all I wanted was for Lee to get to Kara first. Or for him to call her bluff. This fic is both. It's not a showdown on main street like I enjoy joking about, but it's quiet and it's them (so it's better!).

7. Contrecoup by Fahye (T, ~2.2K)

Summary:

Contrecoup (n): A concussion or shock produced by a blow or other injury, in a part or region opposite to that at which the blow is received, often causing rupture or disorganisation of the parts affected. (One story told right-way-up, the other told upside-down, but both in the same narrative.)

We begin at a single point in time. The present goes forwards. The past goes backwards.

The story is AU-within-canon and set after episode 1x11, "Colonial Day."

Thoughts: I can't say too much because I don't want to spoil the fic. So: a bit angsty, a lot sweet, with a side of Kara's amazing problem-solving skills.

8. Lee's Emo Coffeehouse by haycorn (M, ~2.9K)

Summary: Lee has a bar, and sometimes Kara makes his life more interesting. Thoughts: I love cute modern AUs in general, and I love them even more when there's pining involved. There's not nearly enough of this type of fic for pilots, either! Many thanks to the author for their service. Would read 100K of this 'verse.

9. Breathing Room by callmeonetrack (M, ~12K)

Summary: Kara and Lee adjust to their new, very separate lives on the Pegasus. Badly.

Thoughts: My favorite Pegasus fic! Being on the Pegasus sucks, but then Lee and Kara find each other and things get better. Chef's kiss, peak pilots.

10. And I Feel Fine by hazellazer (M, ~2.4K)

Summary:

“That was… that… why?”

Her hands stay firmly on his face, thumb brushing over his cheek. “I was just thinking—”

Cutting her off, he smirks. “You think?”

She swats at his arm, hard enough that it might actually bruise. “I thought you were dead, Lee.” Her gaze is harsh on his, voice rasping, before something softens. “And I should’ve done this the second I knew you weren’t.” Thoughts: Season 1, but Lee and Kara are together. It's nice, refreshing, and plain good.

Me, writing BSG fic? In the year 2023? Yeah, it wasn't on my bingo card either. But that's been a theme this year, and this weekend marks the 20th anniversary of BSG's premiere, and...here we are. I have some feelings about this, which will go under the cut.

I joined Tumblr after the heyday of the BSG fandom, so many of you didn't know me during that time (others haven't gotten rid of me since). It was a long time ago! The last time I wrote Laura Roslin fic was in 2011. BSG was my last major fandom during the LiveJournal era, and after it came Doctor Who and the start of my Tumblr era, which has lasted much longer and been (mostly) a joy...

But nothing's ever been like BSG. The glory days of my time in that fandom are untouchable. No fandom, and very few other external factors, have impacted my life the way BSG did. If I hadn't begrudgingly watched this show that I was deeply skeptical about (I had never watched sci-fi and had no real interest, but a friend insisted) and loved it so much that I spent most of my free time talking about it with people on the internet...

I'd be a fundamentally different person. The trajectory of my life was altered with that first episode. And now, twenty years after it first aired and coming up on seventeen since I first watched it, there is virtually no part of my daily existence that isn't impacted by/the direct or indirect result of my decision to watch this show all those years ago.

This is because of the people, of course. The incredible cast that brought this show to life, and Mary McDonnell above all, who remains very dear to me in ways I never could have imagined way back when. Laura Roslin was and is one of the greatest characters ever created, and to this day remains my favorite of all time.

Much more, though, it's because of my friends.

Most of us haven't talked about BSG in years. It's not something that I even think about particularly often, not explicitly. It's foundational, not front and center. But BSG directly gave me so many of the people that matter most, and indirectly has led to so much more joy and chaos, and so many more people, through the ripples that are still making their way into my future.

I signed up for this challenge on a whim, thinking it would be fun to revisit BSG and Laura after all this time. Then life happened, aggressively, and finishing this ended up being much more challenging than I expected. I'm glad I did, though.

It's been a ride. I'm excited to see where it will take me next.

Kara/Lee Fic LiveJournal Links

It occurred to me a while ago maybe not everyone is familiar with navigating LiveJournal, much less how to go about finding fic there. I figured it could be helpful to have a list of personal journals and communities to make that easier, or just to have on hand. Note: You might notice reference to a specific archive for Kara/Lee fic, called Fallout Shelter, as you explore these links. The bad news is that the site is offline. Unfortunately, the site wasn't archived very well either, so pretty much all the fics that were exclusively archived there are gone. The good news is that the archive was a repository for fics originally posted on the ApolloStarbuckFic yahoo group, which was saved during the massive archival effort to backup YG back in 2019/2020. The even better news is that the data for that group might become available some time next week. I'll make a post explaining how to go about sifting through all the messages if/when the data becomes available. Keep in mind though that I haven't seen this data yet, so I have no idea what, if anything, is saved in the group's messages and files. Still, though, definitely something to be excited about!
