Wouldn't You Like to Know ch. 2
Two
“Why are you buying this book again?” Eloise asked.
Whenever Colin was back home in New York, he tried to do something with all of his siblings. Eloise was always hardest to get since she was a journalist and usually traveling for a story, or working on her podcast. “It was Marina’s favorite. I’m hoping that she’ll see this as a gesture, and take me back.”
The two of them were sitting in a coffee shop somewhere in Brooklyn. Eloise had moved there after graduating from Columbia. She could have easily saved money and stayed at home with their mother in their Upper East Side penthouse, but Eloise liked her freedom. This way, she wasn’t constantly being hounded by her mother to help with Violet Bridgerton’s YouTube channel.
            Or about getting married.
Eloise tilted her head to the side. “You know she’s not worth it, right? She was cheating on you the whole time. She lied about who she was. She was using you for publicity.”
Colin glared at his younger sister. “You don’t know anything.”
Eloise laughed. “I’m a journalist. I know everything. I’ve heard things I keep from you because I care for you. Anyway, this whole hitting a photographer thing hasn’t done your career any favors. How long has it been since you booked something?’
Colin took a sip of his coffee. That was something he both loved and hated about Eloise. She was brutally honest and kept him in check, even when he didn’t want to be. “Almost a year. But that’s why I started the production company.”
“Right,” said Eloise, “and Wallflowers is supposed to be your first film?”
Collin nodded. “I don’t know. There was something about it I related to.”
Eloise snorted. “Of course you did. It probably feels familiar.”
Colin furrowed his brows together. “What makes you say that?”
Eloise gave him a knowing look. “Playing the fool does not look good on you, brother. This was you and Penelope all through high school.”
Colin scoffed. “Penelope Featherington? Your little friend that always followed me around like a puppy dog? No, that wasn’t us.”
She rolled her eyes. “Yes, it was. You liked her but you cared more about fitting in. Probably for the best, anyway. Considering the snake in the grass that she turned out to be.”
Colin raised an eyebrow. “What are you talking about?”
Eloise took a sip of her coffee. “You remember that little gossip Instagram that was always posting about us and everyone else at our school?”
Colin rolled his eyes. “How could I forget? It followed our every move.”
“We could never figure out who did it. Well, I did. It was Penelope Featherington. That’s why we stopped being friends.”
He stared at her, unblinking. “Penelope Featherington? The---the curvy redhead that was always so quiet? She was that Whistledown Blast creator?”
Eloise nodded. “I had to use her phone for something one day and she left her account open. I called her out on it and that’s when we stopped being friends. Of course, her father also stole money from our mother’s business, but that wasn’t about her. Still, it hurt to realize the girl I thought was my friend had brought my family so much grief. She’s the reason Daphne didn’t get married to the prince.”
Colin snorted. “Oh, please. Daphne was in love with Simon Basset for years. Her and Prince Freddie were never going to make it after they graduated. Whistledown Blast breaking the story of the two of them being in love with each other was the best thing that ever happened to Daphne. She’s in love, and happy, and don’t forget our adorable nephew, Augie.”
Eloise smiled. “Yes, Augie is adorable. But I think Daphne and Simon both would have preferred it happened without someone posting all of their secret texts online.”
“Alright, I understand that. But…I don’t know that whole thing seems so unlike Pen.”
Eloise shook her head. “She’s a snake in the grass, brother. Quiet doesn’t always mean innocent. Sometimes it means people are watching very, very carefully.”
Colin laughed. “Tell me how you really feel, El.”
Eloise rolled her eyes. “Anyway, that’s why you relate to Wallflowers. Maybe instead of focusing on trying to get Marina back, you should look up Pen.”
Colin frowned. “I thought you were telling me not to trust her.”
Eloise shrugged. “You’re an adult, aren’t you? You can do what you want. Anyway, my history with Pen shouldn’t interfere with yours.”
Colin raised an eyebrow. “Is this about you and Theo?”
She took another sip of her coffee. “This is about friendship and trusting the wrong people. Anyway, do what you want Colin. But be careful.”
Colin chuckled. “Always a pleasure seeing you again, El.”
Eloise winked at him then stood to leave. “I’ve got to go. I’ve got a meeting with my editor. But I’ll see you this Sunday at dinner, yeah?”
“Course.” Colin stood up and hugged his sister. The two of them parted ways, and Colin took out his phone to look up Penelope. Strangely, her old social media hadn’t been updated since she had been in college. Still, he took a shot, and sent her a DM anyway.

The writing was so bad can’t believe I ever complained about S1. Like what happened? I feel like there had to have been some creative dispute. It seemed like they couldn’t decide what story they were telling.
S1 was comparatively much tighter and more cohesive. The characters had more depth, here only Anthony does because they otherwise spread themselves so thin. Don’t get me started on how wrong they did Kate (and Mary and even more egregiously, Edwina)
The pacing was as bad as the reviews indicated and the general plotting also not bad. Their attempt to vaguely fuse TVWLM with whatever new story they were actually trying to tell just didn’t work. So haphazard.
I nevertheless loved Kate/Anthony—Simone and Jonathan were able to rise above the inferior and little material they had to work with. But without seeing them married I feel like we missed out a lot on Kathony’s signature dynamic. It was endless angst with little respite. Where’s their playfulness and ridiculousness? Dragging the love triangle out to the eleventh hour and then them continuously circling one another zapped the energy out. And because they did admit clearly they wanted each other I didn’t understand what was preventing them, beyond vague ~duty~.
Also they should’ve ended the engagement after the dinner party. You still get Edwina being heartbroken and mad at Kate, plus the scandal of a broken engagement. It was comically unbelievable that both family’s recovered from a runaway bridge that quickly (the Queen hand waved it I guess?)
it was definitely all over the place with excessive the side-plots. The tightest writing by far was when it was just Kate and Anthony, and then the Bridgerton family stuff (Violet and Anthony, surprisingly Daphne and Anthony, Colin and Benedict being hot messes together, etc.).
I actually think Edwina got a lot more depth in the show than she ever did in the books (Charithra is brilliant), and she was well within her rights to react the way she did when she realized on her wedding day that her husband-to-be (who btw is 11 years older than her) is in love with her sister. On the other hand, Mary lost a lot of screen time and character depth.
And I do agree, because of how the plot was set/the pacing, all we mostly got was Kathony angst. There really wasn't much of their playfulness when they were sparring (save like, the first scene when they met). Even the pall-mall scene, when they were alone, was romantically tense, but almost had a somber feeling to it. But the romantic tension between them was top-notch, heavy breathing and Anthony's multiple reprises of "I am a gentleman" but "I'm still horny for you" included.
I was just super struck by the epilogue and their dynamic, and my final takeaway was that I wish we'd gotten a little more of that.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Do you think that he will speak german? Or maybe he knows english? Oh, do you recon if His Highness had ever travelled?” you asked excited at your brother, Benedict, while you entered at the ball.
“I do not know, sister. You can ask these question to him personally, tonight.” he said ironical smiling at the Lords who walked beside you.
“If he will have time for them, my dear brother. I am sure that if he’ll want peace he will have to disappear somewhere where the Ladies will be not able to find him.” you both laughed searching around the room your sister Daphne.
“Be careful with that tounge, Y/n. You know that I love you for that, but not many Lords will think the same.” he warned you kindly knowing that your temper wasn’t like the others Ladies.
“Fortunately I don’t want many Lords. I think that Lord de Bethencourt had hit the right string in me, and he likes me for who I am, Benedict.” you smiled thinking about your suitor, Lord de Bethencourt, that since the first ball had started courting you as a true gentleman without boring or offending you in any ways. “Look, there is my sister with...Simon.”
Benedict could hear your smirk even without looking at you, indeed his attention was captured by the opening of the large doors followed by the entrance of Queen Charlotte with her nephew, Prince Friedrich of Prussia.
“Oh, they are arri...ved....” your breating stopped for few seconds causing Benedict to look at you; however your gaze was fixed on the guy who’s arm was intertwined with the Queen’s. You would had sworn to have seen Cupid himself revealing his face for the first time as he did with Psyche after their marriage. When his eyes met yours, you were sure that Canova must had taked ispiration from him for Cupid’s sculpture, because never in your life you had ever seen such beauty as the Prince himself.
“I will be not surprise when you will drag Colin in Prussia at your next travel.” Benedict joked smirking looking the Prince who now was approaching your sister.
You woke up from your dreams blinking many times to understand what was happening. The Prince now was speaking with Daphne but at some point she laughed, and from his face you could see that he hadn’t say something funny. “Well, surely now he knows how the Bridgertons are.” you said shrugging slightly keeping your elegant posture. “One of us should go and apologies for her.”
You looked Benedict, he looked you. Both wanted to send the other because neither of you liked to speak with the Queen. “Look your Charming Prince is coming, I must let you to know him.”
“What! No you must stay here and intimidate him! It is what you brothers are made for.” you tried to keep his arm in your hands without looking clumsy, but obviously he was stronger than you.
“Trust me, sister, you can intimidate him perfectly by yourself.” he gave you one last smirk before slipping away among the people leaving you alone. You heard the heels of the Queen approaching, and with still your amused smile you turned around ready to meet them.
The Prince’s eyes were already on you making your cheeks turned into a soft pink. His smile suggested you that he had assist at the scene with your brother, even if he couldn’t hear what you said, and when the Queen spoke briefly about you he wasn’t surprise to know that you were also a Bridgerton. He noticed happily that you were a particular family.
“Miss Y/n Bridgerton, he is Your Highness Prince Friedrich of Prussia.” the cold voice of the Queen interrupted you from staring Prince’s eyes.
“Your Grace, it’s a pleasure meeting you.” you bowed slowly wanting to remember at the Queen that Daphne wasn’t the only one who could bow in a charming way.
“Please, my aunt loves the title, but Prince Friedrich is more than enough, Miss Bridgerton.” he smiled kindly at you when you stood up. He bowed too, kissing your hand over your glove charmed by your smile. He had the pleasure to see it long before approaching, when the smile had began more polite and less amused. He saw you interacting with your brother in such a natural way that he couldn’t not think that you were the only two people who didn’t hide behind a mask.
“I hope you enjoied the journey, Prince Friedrich. I heard that the English Channel is not always so kind with its sailors.” he appreciated that you didn’t say the same questions or senteces of the others Ladies he met, but instead you chose to make an indirect question adding a true fact and leaving him the word.
“I was lucky, the sky was blue and the sun had welcomed us with the warmest of its rays.” you were happy to hear the German accent in his voice while he kept speaking, like you had imagined since the news of his arrival.
“I am happy to hear that, and I wanted to apologies for the behaviour of my sister, few moments ago. We are a very...vivacious family.” you giggled at your last words thinking about all the time that you and your brothers had made your mother loosing her mind.
He could not hold a laugh at your comment, knowing perfectly what meant growing up in a big family with people you love. He ignored Queen’s eyes on him that was waiting to walk away; he just staied still admiring your features while with still your smile on you were looking the couples who were ending their dance.
“Have you had already the pleasure to dance, Lady Y/n?” he asked curious letting the Queen understand that he hadn’t the intention of going away.
“Unfortunately, not yet. I have arrived few minutes before you, Your Grace, and your arrival had shadowed my presence here, I think.” you raised an eyebrow turning your gaze on him. Benedict was right, you could intimidate people by your own and you had so much fun doing that, because it was beautiful seeing the men taken back by a woman.
He raised his hand offering it to you with shining eyes and a little bow. “Your beauty is too shiny to be shadowed; I beg you to let me repair at what I have done. Perhaps with a dance?”
The Queen looked him shocked while your smile grew bigger. “I do not think it will be appropriate, Friedrich.” she said worried.
“It is my fault that this beautiful Lady has not been invited to dance yet, I cannot let to this injustice to happen.” he felt his heart lighter when he heard your laugh.
You took his hand happily to have the power of doing something that the Queen didn’t approve; she had made the mistake to understimate you just because your vitality that a Lady shouldn’ t have, and now you were taking her nephew away under he own nose. “I suppose a dance can repair your damage, Prince Friedrich.”
You hadn’t realize that you were actually to be about to dance with a Prince, untile all the eyes were on you. You two were let alone at the centre of the room, standing in front of each other without looking away from the other’s eyes. Whispers could be heard around you, Benedict was looking the face of the mothers around him to make a laugh while Daphne was positively surprised with beside her Simon had a huge grin on his face.
After bowing you stepped closer to let one of his hand resting on your hips while with the other he took yours. You rested your left hand on his shoulder and the music began covering the whispers and leaving the only two of you to dance.
“It is a honor being your first dance of tonight, Lady Bridgerton.” he said breaking your silent.
“You flatter me, Your Grace.” he spinned you taking all the space you wanted since no one had yet joined you. “Although you stil haven’t meet my all family; you would find yourself less honored and more...longing to walk away and never meet us again.”
With your surprise he laughed lowering his head a little looking the ground for a moment. He felt attracted by your humor; it made him feel more relaxed and it brought him memories about his childhood with his cousins with who he was used play and laugh every day.
“I find it quite impossible, my Lady, but tell me something about you...I heard that you are a traveller; which place has the unattainable fortune to own your heart?” his voice was smooth and sweet but still with the firmness of a Prince. You wondered if the choice of wearing the same blue of his eyes had been his own choice or it was you that sometime observed too much.
“I’ve been in few places with my brother, Lord Colin Bridgerton, but I hope to see more.” he nodded understanding the feeling. “I found Scotland quite lovely, but if I have to be honest, my heart would like to take a little farm in Ireland and settle there among the green of its beautiful landscape.”
More you two spoke, and more he noticed how much things you had in common. You hadn’t problem to talk sincerely, you knew he was out of your league; in that room there were few Ladies who could be a future princess, and you were very aware that one of them was your sister. However the feeling that Cupid was in front of you in all his beauty was still in your chest; you couldn’t even decide which part of him you liked the most, because every thing of him matched perfectly together; his warm smile suggested the humility he had, his big blue eyes seemed belong to a baby who looked everywhere with wonder and his curly blonde hair looked like freshly cut wheat.
When the music ended you bowed at each other. He took your and kissing it without taking his eyes away from yours. Were butterflies those in your stomach? “You put me in a difficult position, my Lady. I cannot compliment with a part of you without mention the others.” his smile and his voice made you blush while he was still holding your hand. “You are a wonderful woman, Miss Y/n, and a divine dancer. I shall look to meet you again, if you allow me.”
You felt your heart beat fast in your chest, almost as it wanted to speak with Prince Friedrich personally. “Your words enchant me, Prince Friedrich. I would be more than delighted to talk with you again, maybe next time you could tell me about Prussia and suggest some place to visit for my next journey.”
“I will be not surprise when you will drag Colin in Prussia at your next travel.” you heard Benedict’s voice in your head laughing at you, but the Prince’s presence was like a drug to you.
“I will look forward to hear about your journeys, my Lady.” with a last smile, you walked in different directions still with all the eyes on you.
He found himself looking for you around the room more often than he were conscious; he learned fast that the gentleman with who you danced few times was Lord de Bethencourt, a French Lord who since your first debut had expresses the interest he had toward you in the most romantic way. He saw you two laughing, speaking and dancing with a chemistry he envied. When you would laugh due something that Lord de Bethencourt had whispered in your ear, he would ask himself what he had said to you and the same when you were commited in a deep conversation about God knew what.
The Queen had tried to make him dance with Daphne, but he wasn’t blind and he could see the affection that your sister shared with Simon, but at some point of the night Lady Cressida fainted in his arms catching the attention of everyone.
You saw with a smile that the two of them made a beautiful couple, and Cressida had always radiated royalty in everything she did. To be honest, it didn’t touch you at all; you had enjoied Prince’s company and the dance had made many gentlemen coming to you and ask for a dance so who you were to complain?
When you fell asleep you could not ask yourself why Cupid had decided to reveal his face at you so soon when with Psyche he tried to hide it everytime. You didn’t know there could exist such beauty in just a person, and still the Prince where there, in your same city and you had shared a dance together. You wished that just like Psyche, Cupid would come to you and take you away to live together, but this time Cupid was a Prince, and as a Prince he could not avoid his duty.
Dear readers,
I know you were waiting the edition of the morning, and after what happened last night at the ball I can understand you.
If you weren’t at the ball then you didn’t assist at the rivelation of the season. We all know that Daphne Bridgerton had been declared the Diamond of the season by the Queen herself, but it was another Lady who danced with Your Highness of Prussia. Indeed, Prince Friedrich and Lady Y/n Bridgerton had shared their first dance together under the disapproval look of the Queen.
Surely Lady Violet must be excited to have under her roof a future Duchess and a future Princess, and if you think that I am too fast to judge then you didn’t see Miss Y/n and Prince Friedrich at all. But Prince Friedrich must had seen that Lady Bridgerton had already a suitor, the handsome gentleman Lord de Bethencourt, I am sure we all are curious to see what will happen.
However the Prince seemed to have taked the attention of another suitable Lady, Miss Cressida Cowper. The young woman had fainted between the arm of Prince Friedrich and he helped her like a real Charming Prince, but if your eyes had fallen on Lady Y/n for a moment you could have seen that she was smiling, and not a polite one, but a true smile!
Is it possible that the charm of our Charming Prince didn’t charmed her at all? Maybe her heart is already living in France, but I would not be surprise if in few day the Prussia will reclaim her heart as its own.
If something happen, I will be the first to tell you.
Yours, Lady Whistledown.
“How was the Prince? Did he invite you at palace? Was he like the princes of the farytails?!” the shrill voice of Hyacinth filled the room in the exact moment you entered in the Living room the next morning.
“Let your sister breath, Hyacinth. Come sweatheart, sit here and tell us about last night.” your mother said making you sit on the couch beside her excited.
“Mama, I stop you here before you start to hyperventilate. We shared only one dance and it was beacuse I almost forced him to do so.” you giggled at the lovely memory of your dance.
“Although, he didn’t seem forced. I would say he quite enjoied your dance.” Benedict said slyly and you launched a pillow at him hitting his face.
“You were beautiful together, Y/n. Everyone couldn’t stop looking at you during the ball.” Daphne said smiling sweetly making you blush.
“Stop! All of you. It was only a dance and-”
You were interrupted by three servants who entered in the room with three baskets of flowers. “A gift for Miss Y/n Bridgerton.”
They put the flowers on the table leaving all of you Bridgerton looking at each other curious. It wasn’t unusual that someone sent you gifts, but no one had ever sent you so many flowers; usually it was enough just one baskets or few rose.
“Whoever send these must want your hand badly.” joked Colin while you walked toward the table.
“Maybe he will, look at this Lilies!” Lilies were your favourite flower, indeed there was a spot in the park full of them where you were used to go whenever you wanted to relax alone.
You took the ticket that was on the second baskets seeing that there was your name written with an elegant handwriting. “Make sure to read it out loud, sister.” said Anthony with a smirk.
“Lovely Miss Y/n,
the memory of our dance took the charge of my thoughs and the time we shared together seems a dream. My heart wish to hear more about your journeys and dreams, I hope my presence in the park these days will be accepted from you and perhaps we could talk again.
In the meantime, I thought about what you said of living in a little farm in Ireland, and I could not resist but imagine that these flowers would be perfect in your future garden.
Sincerely, Prince Friedrich.”  your voice had become exciter after the first part of the letter, and now you didn’t know if it was a dream or it was all real.
“I didn’t know that in Prussia had such low standard:” Benedict.
“Our sister will become a Princess!” Colin.
“Yes, a Princess who will make all the Prussia crazy due her talkativeness .” Anthony.
“Y/n Bridgerton! Did you tell at the Prince that you want to live in a farm?!” Lady Violet yelled shocked by her own daughter actions.
“In my defence he liked it!” you said trying to hold a laugh. “And then...come on! Who would ever imagine that he was truly listening me?! I though, and still thing, that he is out of my league so why not being sincere?”
“Well, I would dare to say that he was truly listenting you.” said Benedict giggling earning a death glare from you.
“It is his fault!” you pointed at him looking your mother.
“Why mine?” he stood up suddenly confused.
“He left me alone when the Prince was approaching! I was unsupervised, and you know what happen when I am unsupervised.” you hoped that it would be a good excuse, but the look of your mother said otherwise. “Alright, when I’ll see him again I say that I’ve lied, my real dream is living in a huge castle full of jewerly, rules and boring stuff. Because we all know how much I love the boring stuff.”
Your drammatic tone made everyone laugh until the arrival of the first suitors for you and your sister.
You tried to stay focus on what they were saying, but every now and then your eyes felt on the baskets of flowers that were on the table worring about what the Prince was doing. Had he visisted some Lady? Maybe Lady Cressida? Or maybe he sent flowers to all the Ladies with who he had danced the last night...you wouldn’t be surprise since you had seen how much was big his kindness.
Waking up with the sight of his flowers in your bedroom made your next mornings starting in a good way. That afternoon you would meet Lord de Bethencourt at the park, and in a hidden place of your mind you were hoping to see Prince Friedrich there.
You had the beautiful idea to taking a walk with the horses so you had the opportunity to put on your new dark blue suit. The clouds were covering the sun colouring the air around you of a light shade of grey, indeed there weren’t many people out letting you two to enjoy the company of each other.
“And what was the thing that inspired a lovely lady like you to learn French?” Lord de Bethencourt asked you curious.
“You see, my Lord, with my passion for travelling the desire to know other languages came by itself. It wasn’t easy at the beginning, I must say, but I find it so romantic that I could not stay in my ignorance.” you looked over his shoulder for a moment seeing a blonde haired head sitting not far away from you.
“There is so many places in France that would be lucky to being seen by you, my Lady. Perhaps the next time shall I talk about them?” he asked taking firmly his reins ready to return at his home.
“You must, Lord de Bethencourt. I wish you a good night.” you smiled at him and after having wished you a good day he kicked his horse making him trot away.
Could you go home and relax with a good book and warm blankets? Yes.
Did you wanted to do so? Absolutely no.
So in a very natural way you turned around your horse and went towards the blonde haired man you had seen few moments before. The park was huge so you started to look around enjoing the green that was around you and looking the swan that was in the middle of the little lake at your right.
Few metres before the man, who you saw was sitting at a table admiring the lake, some guards stopped you and your waitress from going further. “I am sorry Miss, but you cannot get closer.”
“Then would you be so kind to guide me at home toward another street?” you replied with fake concern. You knew very well that there were plenty other street that would bring you home, but you wanted some fun earning his attention.
“I am really sorry Miss, but I cannot let you go further.” he looked truly sorry, but most of the men forget that a woman has more power than what they believe; indeed it was you favourite hobby making the Lords apologies with you for whatever and whenever you want.
“Then let me adjust this problem.” you cleared your throat holding the smirk that fought so hard to be free. “Your Highness! When you said that you would like to stay in my company again I didn’t expect that you would forbid me to go home.”
Prince Friedrich turned around looking surprised at you. The guard’s mouth felt open while you kept your sweet smile on your face rather amused by all the situation.
“Lady Bridgerton, for a moment I though to have seen a mirage...tell me, my guard had been unkind to you?” he walked closer to you, but you didn’t get off the horse kepping your back straight and looking him up down.
“There is not enough sun for a mirage, Prince Friedrich; unfortunately it’s just me.” you let out a giggle and a smile appeared on his face. “Although, no you guard didn’t do anything out of your orders, but I was unhappy when I found out that I couldn’t get back at home...”
“Your unhappiness bring me pain, my Lady.” he brought a hand to his heart bowing respecfully. “I cannot say that I am not pleased to see you again. Can I apologies for this misunderstanding wìth a cup of tea?”
You smiled with pride seeing that you made the Prince asking you sorry twice without even commit yourself too much. You looked behind you your brother Anthony that had been your silent chaperon for all day and after he gave you a nod smirking you turned your attention to the Prince again.
“How could I say no after the wonderful flowers you sent me?” he offered happily his hand to help you to get off the horse and you accepted it gladly. When a guard approached to take your horse you looked at him carefully. “Be careful with her. She is not fond with men due her...brutal childhood, so be kind and treat her as a Princess, because she is, right Cassidy?” you caressed your horse affectionately before giving the reins at the guard.
“What happened to Cassidy?” the Prince asked curious bringing you at the table and holding the chair for you.
“She was born to race. Her first owners used to do illegal races and it wasn’t unusual for them to beat her to make her run faster. My brother, Lord Anthony Bridgerton, found them and all the horses had been selt, but she was frightened by everything; so an afternoon I decided to visit Cassidy and day by day I took care of her.” you said lost in your memories with a little smile on your lips.
“She had been very lucky to find you, Miss Y/n, and do you like riding often?” he offered you a cup of tea that you took thanking him kindly.
“Oh yes. Mostly when I want to go in the countryside and take a walk among the green. I find horses beautiful animals.”
“I agree. So, I hope I had helped your immagination with those flowers.” he smiled with a little blush on his cheeks. If Cupid owned already such beauty, why he must own even the most melodious voice that your ear had ever heard? Wasn’t enought enchanting your eyes? What did he want from a normal human like you? Why didn’t he fly to his Psyche and let you live happily?
“These flowers made me dreams more vividly about my future garden, Prince Friedrich, and your words had been poesy for my eyes.” he must had done something to your tea, because with few words you were drunk of his presence. You didn’t dare to allow you to dream about a future with him, because you knew he was a dream to live day by day so that when you would wake up you would not have any regrets.
You talked and talked; he made you laugh and your spontaneity made him attracted to you even more. He watched your smile, your eyes, your pink cheeks and the beautiful light that turned on everytime you talked about something you loved. He found out that weren’t you only a strong woman, but you were also acculturated, clever and smart; this made him liking even more your power to stand up for yourself even with men.
“But if I will go to France, the first thing I desire to see if the sculpture of Cupid and Psyche, their story affascinate my since I was a kid.” you ended your speech about the place you wished to go in the future.
“Such a beautiful love story. I read it long time ago and still it is in my head so vividly that I could recite some part of it.” he agreed completely absorbed in your conversation.
“Indeed, I dare to say that is one of my favourite love story ever. He, the god of love find love in a human girl due his own mistake, and to protect her and himself from the mother he decided to hide his face. I mean, yes his love started because one of his own arrow hit him, by I think it was destiny.” your voice was music to his ear, he wished to be able to listen you all day.

Bridgerton S1E3: "Art of the Swoon" | Thoughts
❝ After Daphne catches the eye of a royal suitor, she turns to Simon for relationship advice. Lady Featherington tries to browbeat Marina into marriage. ❞
Tumblr media
Find my reactions to other episodes of Bridgerton here and to episodes from other TV shows here! 🐝
Am I taking too much time out of my schedule to watch Bridgerton? Probably. Am I going to do it anyway? Yes, certainly. Time to move on to episode 3 where I share my thoughts as I watch through the series for the first time!
Not Daphne getting turned on by Simon licking a spoon 💀
An accurate representation of me doing the bare minimum and still being exhausted:
Tumblr media
I love Daphne and Simon's smiles while joking around with each other, so precious
Daphne's little snort giggle and Simon grinning in response is so cute!
Tumblr media
Daphne and Anthony trying to figure out how to light the stove but then settling on cold milk is honestly me not deciding to cook something and settling for a Nutella sandwich
Super cute that Anthony calls her "Daph" and is so protective over his sister
"Some people are not meant to be together, no matter how much we might wish otherwise" isn't that the truth or what?
I don't think I've mentioned this yet, but I love that Eloise has such a feministic view on life. It's really interesting to see her beliefs clash with those expected from a girl her age in that time period
Me to my brain trying to get it to stop wanting to watch Bridgerton and actually focus on studying for exams:
Tumblr media
Aww, this scene between them was honestly adorable. Like look at them holding hands, how could you not ship them?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, the fact that Simon didn't end up going to the opera to sleep with Siena must have something to do with the fact that he's slowly feeling closer to Daphne and doesn't crave the spontaneity that he gets during these encounters with different women 😏
Eloise being my favourite feminist character in this series:
Tumblr media
Also I do kind of like the relationship that Eloise and Daphne have. They are two different girls with different viewpoints and priorities of life and while they do disagree on those, it's pretty clear how much they still care about one another
PLEASE, imagine getting the sex talk from your future love interest. Someone get these girls some sex education, stat
Also, I think Eloise and Benedict’s relationship is very precious in their own way. The fact that they bond over smokes in the middle of the night and confess their fears to the other is adorable
“I do not believe there could be a more ridiculous notion than that of us ever being friends” “You were a convenience… a diversion… but nothing more” OUCH SIMON, he's clearly pushing her away because he's caught the feels!
Honestly, if I didn’t know Anthony has Kate in season 2, I would’ve found his “I’m here because I miss you” to Siena cute
Can I just say that while I don't really like Siena, I do wish she deserves better than Anthony in this situation? While I don't like that she seems to be chastising Anthony for putting all his responsibilities to his family over her, I do like how she delivered the line and especially when she says "I shall always be the woman you may love in darkness, but never in the light of day" 😔
I feel kind of bad for Marina, it's a shame that Lady Featherington truly believed that manipulating and forging George's letters would be what was best for her
When Daphne steps out on the balcony in front of everyone and picked herself up after Simon broke her heart 😍 yesss girl
I'm not sure why it took me so long to finish watching episode 3 (probably because of school and work), but I really hope Simon and Daphne find their way back to each other soon. Hopefully, Simon realizes that he shouldn't fight his feelings for her and that Daphne feels the same way he does!

The Potential In Philoise
Tumblr media
gif credit: @vakariaan
tw/ sexual assault, abuse, depression, suicide, julia quinn’s writing
AN: Okay, so I said awhile ago I would explain why Phillip and Eloise are my favorite couple in the series so get ready...it’s a bit of a long one.
I read four Bridgerton books immediately after the show ended. Skipping over The Duke and I because I wasn’t comfortable with the assault scene between Simon and Daphne and also because I had already seen the romance play out onscreen. I fell in love with each romance I encountered, mainly because I didn’t read them as they were but as the show would make them out to be. I romanticized a romance series as weird as that sounds. Yet, none of the romances struck me the way To Sir Phillip, With Love did.
It’s not a perfect book. In fact, it's incredibly problematic. Phillip rapes his depressed wife, Marina (although given Julia’s history with crossing the lines of consent I doubt this is the way she wanted us to interpret the scene. Actually, the way it was written made it seem like we were meant to sympathize with Phillip and his loveless marriage. Hence the way he immediately grows ill afterward.) Marina attempts suicide and dies due to disease later on. Given her storyline in the show and the fact that a young biracial woman is playing her was disheartening, to say the least.
(AN: I don’t consider the character to be Black representation, she’s biracial. As a black woman who enjoyed her character and arc, no part of me felt seen and represented through her because she was half black. She's Biracial rep, not Black rep and that’s okay. Just putting that out there. )
Phillip seeks a woman to take care of his children, fuck and do the shit he doesn’t want to do. His mental illness is handled in such a shitty way. The independent nature Eloise once has is almost stifled by Phillip and what he wants for some reason. He’s neglectful, erratic and he does dismiss potential negative feelings Eloise could have in their relationship because of his past relationship.
It's fucked up. The entire book.
And yet, imagining how this problematic romance would play out on screen once properly adapted for modern audiences makes me fucking giddy. All because of one, simple thing that remains the reason I am so fucking excited to see this pairing onscreen.
The unrealized potential the pairing and Phillip as a character have in the novel.
Let me explain.
Their romance is unique. Phillip and Eloise are not strangers when they meet. They’ve been writing to each other for months, picking each other’s brains every week or so. Getting to know each other in a way that other couples in the series don’t at first. Intellectually. They’re able to keep such a steady, enthralling dialogue through letters, and it's a friendship that they both enjoy. Phillip stimulates Eloise’s mind, something the show has emphasized her wanting, for months. He’s her intellectual equal, or at least...he has the potential to be. Of course, he slaves over the letters (which is cute as fuck because he really just wants her to like him) but it's still his words. It’s his voice. It is Phillip, at his best.
I hope the show can play this up. Phillip is a botanist and a scholar before he inherits his family’s estate. Eloise has a desire to learn and further her knowledge of the world around her. Bonding over their shared love of education, fun banter based around teasing the other and their individual studies, taking an interest in what the other desires to learn.  Reading books together in the greenhouse, etc. The show could easily play up the fact that Phillip was not only a gardener but a literal man of science, something Julia neglects in their book despite it having the possibility of playing a major factor in their love story.
The possibilities of it just...makes me swoon.
Moving on, Eloise choosing to pursue a possible future with this man is a big fucking deal. Running away from home to go after a future for herself IS her displaying her OWN agency. Sure, Phillip poses the question of it but she’s the one who chooses it. Phillip doesn’t demand her to come to him, he simply suggests it and she’s the one who acts. The one who pursues. And if they hadn’t been bombarded by her brothers, it would’ve remained her choice of whether or she wanted to be a part of this man’s life permanently.
Phillip wouldn’t have forced her, he could’ve easily tried to. By going to the Bridgerton house and discussing with Anthony the possibility of marrying her but no, he asks her. HE ASKS HER AND SHE CHOOSES. I fucking love that. It's like the bare minimum but given the time period and the number of couples where the man has the final say on the marriage, this just makes me giddy. The show could change this and give Eloise more time with Phillip to the point where she chooses him and isn’t forced into the marriage which I hope they do.
Also, their first meeting where neither one of them is what the other expects sounds amazing ngl. The initial confusion, shock, unease, and undeniable attraction, it's gonna serve why lie?
Despite how much it affects him, the subject of Phillip’s abuse is handled so...wrong. As someone who shares an experience with abusive parents, I understand the fear of becoming like them. Of hurting the ones you love and being angry and feeling guilty. Yet, Phillip never confronts these fears. Not really. Sure, we get the scene in the nursery but thinking of how the show could handle it and his relationship with his children makes me excited. Having him being neglectful of his children was the wrong move, especially if his fear is hurting them in an attempt to discipline them. It's clear he loves them and ultimately wants the best for them which is why he’s searching for someone to better take care of them despite the shitty bitch he already has hired. I hope the show capitalizes on that.
Have Phillip be involved but not a disciplinary figure. Yeah, I get that he’s the man or whatever but it's clear that Phillip finds no enjoyment in the act or even pondering it. But he does love his kids. Have him be overwhelmed but still involved. It just felt weird that Phillip didn’t want anything to do with his kids despite one of his main reasons to look for a wife was so that they could be properly taken care of. Have him try but struggle. A lot.
It’d be funny to see Oliver and Amanda running the house and Phillip struggling to keep up. They’re supposed to be mischievous, they should play that up in the show. Having the kids be little gremlins but instead of him ignoring them completely, he could just give in to their whims. And when his anger does get the best of him, then he could run. Be distant, wrestle with his internal struggle with abuse but also knowing he can’t let his kids run his household like this and go about as reckless as they do.
Speaking of abuse, I hope they scrap the nursery lady altogether. I know it’s supposed to show him stepping into dad mode but it just felt like unnecessary and triggering of his own child abuse. He could easily step into this role by learning to deal with his anger, learning to control it. Eloise could suggest journaling the way she does (another bonding moment that could be less cute and more intimate if done right.) Having him put his anger into gardening, I interpreted it as it being a safe place and coping mechanism for him in the book and that would be nice to see.
Having to finally put an end to his kids' tirade once he learns to trust himself and realize that he’s nothing like his father. Actual healing from childhood trauma and Eloise helping him do so. She could also suggest boxing with her brothers like...it just makes sense. As someone with a temper, boxing helped me sort through that and the opportunity to see Phillip and Simon bonding, while boxing, over their shitty dads, sounds pretty fucking cathartic (and hot).
I would just like the show to truly show that just because you’ve dealt with abuse doesn’t mean you have to be defined and like your abuser. Phillip is a pretty great candidate for it because the guy is...scarred, to say the least.
I love the physical side of Phillip and Eloise’s relationship. Like really love, it's said that they try different things and are comfortable in that regard with each other and it just...yeah, that makes me happy. Besides that, I hope they play up the intellectual side of their relationship. Two nerds in love are adorable and imagining Phillip ranting about plants and Eloise just being completely enthralled at this man and his passion sounds like the cutest fucking shit.
Speaking of intellectual, it's implied Phillip cares little about high society. Meaning, wouldn’t he care even less about societal expectations and norms? Meaning Eloise would literally find freedom with this man to just...do her. Despite the book showing how Phillip wants a wife, it never really says that he cares exactly how that wife maintains herself or their household. Eloise wants to fuck around and wear trousers? He doesn’t care. Eloise wants a private tutor and a study for herself? Cool. Eloise wants to take Amanda riding in the forest and then teach her how to shoot? All good. The man was literally proud to watch her beat her brothers in a traditionally masculine sport. He wants his wife to run his house and his entire life how she sees fit.
Julia really neglected how much agency and power that could give Eloise. She could be his equal, like really be his equal. Of course, Phillip becoming more involved in his and his children’s lives is a part of his arc but nothing leads me to believe he would want to control Eloise. The two of them being more than just lovers, but partners who allow the other their freedoms when needed sounds epic as shit.
Now some things that could easily be left out, the rape scene. It’s there to showcase that Phillip has lost his wife and there is no chance of reigniting whatever they may have had in the past. Yet, there are so many other ways to show that. Phillip could try and speak with her with no response. Hold her hand and she pulls away? He’s a smart man, it doesn’t take much to get the hint so that could’ve easily been written out and replaced with something else.
Second of all, I like the possibility of Marina and Phillip finding happiness at first. Of them trying to love each other after George and succeeding. The way Marina is written in the show, I doubt she’s quick to give up. So to see the two of them having an agreeable marriage and getting along would be nice. They could showcase her mental illness in a different form, it's clear she suffers from postpartum depression. She withdraws into herself, distances herself from her children. She’s depressed but it's not as stereotypical and easily spotted as Julia makes it out to be. Marina just gives up on her children and life without any fight? Absolutely not.
As someone who suffers from depression, the way Julia wrote it is so...??? The truth is, I would like Phillip and their family to not even realize she’s suicidal. To not see it coming when she jumps in the lake and attempts to end her own life because that's exactly how suicide impacts so many people and their loved ones. They don’t see it coming. Phillip struggling with the guilt of that rather than the anger of being trapped in a loveless marriage sounds...a lot more interesting to me. Me, personally. Considering how much buzz the show has, it would spark up a dialogue and a good one if handled properly. I’ve thought a lot about Marina but this is just how I would prefer to see it handled if they go through with her canon death (which I am not actively rooting for by the way.)
Another reason I like the potential of Philloise is Oliver and Amanda, they just add some extra spice. If fully realized characters, watching them grow closer to their dad and form a relationship with Eloise would be so rewarding for two kids who have lost a lot. Also, the amount of comedic gold in their pranks with Eloise and dynamic with each other would give the season even more humor on top of Eloise herself.
And as much as I love the line, “this-us-is heaven.” They could easily modify the love speech. Like very easily.
My point is, I think their potential outweighs the problematic factors in their story and I doubt the show will fail on realizing it and ridding itself of the problematic aspects. One could even say they already started, I mean look at the way the show made a point to show Eloise’s disgust with fathers and husbands who abandon their family, and then comes Phillip, doing the absolute most to protect his remaining family. I mean, Bridgerton did turn the weakest romance in the series into a whole pop culture phenomenon. My hopes are high. Okay, that’s all.

Anthony, Penelope, Marina and Colin deserved better...
Beware, rant ahead
Ok I wish I didn’t feel such strong need to continue beating this dead horse but oopsie, I will very much be beating it some more.
Like, my fave books of the Bridgerton series are Anthony’s and Colin’s books, so I’m seething about what they did with their characterizations, Anthony and Penelope in particular, because Colin’s only real sin was being boring, and if you remember how funny he’s in the books it makes me wanna fall on my knees and ask Chris Van Dusen whyyyy omg why would you do something like that to such a dynamic character. So yeah, Colin is boring af and a moron but at least he isn’t an asshole the way show Anthony and Penelope are, and I’ve seen people say that they can always be redeemed in future seasons, if we get them, but that’s exactly my problem, because they never had to be redeemed in the books, to begin with. Penelope more so than Anthony but let me begin by defending my boy.
Is he a jerk sometimes? Sure. Is he actively awful and uncaring towards those close to him, especially his family? Hell no, quite the opposite, in fact. Not to be controversial on main but in the books... he was right in not wanting Daphne to be courted by a man who he knew damn right had no intention of marrying her and as far as he was aware was only making her waste her time, and he was right in demanding Simon pay for compromising her honor. Could he have been more mindful of what Daphne had to say and listened to her wishes? Of course, but considering Simon and Daphne (both in the show and in the books) aren’t exactly masters in communication themselves, Anthony doesn’t come off as the biggest offender in that situation.
What he never did was force Daphne, or any of his sisters really, to do anything; if they didn’t like a guy then that guy was out of their lives no question asked, and he loved them enough to always have their best interests at heart, for his sisters and his brothers, to the point that even though he’s traumatized and thinks he’s gonna die young he’s still willing to get past that to do his duty and marry, because he doesn’t want to pass that burden on to his little brothers (so him deciding to leave all his responsibilities to Benedict so he can fck off with his mistress is... like, a choice lmao). In fact all the subplot with Siena felt like a choice on the writers part, like they truly liked Benedict and Sophie’s story so they just slapped it on Anthony so he could act all sad and sexy while they gave us foreshadowing with the subtlety of a warharmer that he’s ending up with Kate anyways (and that Benedict is ending with Sophie anyways too, so they would be using that storyline twice, unless they do make him bi and fall in love with a man, but maybe that’s too much of ask for this show), so what was Siena’s purpose in the story? Who tf knows not me.
Now Penelope, my god. Yes I know I joke Penny has never done anything wrong in her life, and I still love her, but she was wrong. Very much so. What she did was significantly worse than what Marina did, which I still don’t condone at all. Like yes, I still maintain that Marina tricking Colin into marriage was wrong (and I’ll go later on why that whole subplot was racist af), but what Penelope did could have not only ruined Marina and herself and her sisters reputations, but it was basically condemning an innocent unborn child to a life in the streets, that’s messed up. Even if Marina was rose-coloring her potential life with Colin and he might have grown to resent her, at least the baby would’ve been alright. And my problem with that whole subplot is that all of it was resolved so neatly, with Sir Phillip sweeping in to save the day so we don’t have to actually see what Penelope’s actions could have caused, but the implications are still very much there.
And I’m cracking my mind trying to figure out whether the showrunners just... really hate Colin’s book and Penelope as a character so they’re trying to inflict some kind of character assassination on her so they can get away with writing him off with another person without causing much outrage, or if they just thought there wasn’t enough ~drama~ or stakes on their book so they have to add them, and give him some kind of bullshit tragic romantic past to explain why he doesn’t want to marry, whereas in the books, the reason he doesn’t marry anyone is because he doesn’t feel like it, and that’s ok, there’s no need for every character to have a tragic backstory and to be riddled with angst; Colin is that character, he’s an easy going guy who’s just not interested in marriage until he falls in love with Penny AND THAT’S VALID, just because he doesn’t have the most complex motivations out there doesn’t mean he isn’t a compelling character. The stakes in his story after he discovers Penny is Whistledown are, as he points out, that she has insulted so many people there’s no way some of them wouldn’t want to retaliate if word came out, and he cares for her and doesn’t want her to get hurt (there’s also a dumb part about him being secretly jealous of her accomplishments as Whistledown, but thankfully he gets over that pretty quickly).
But while I am on that, it is true that Penelope wrote some uncharitable things about the mean people around her, but she never ever ruined someone’s reputation, let alone endanger the future of a child. Was she a bitch sometimes? Yeah, but she was also kind to a lot of people and her criticism was never unwarranted and never did more damage than maybe annoy a couple of girls like Cressida. I just hate the idea of this needing to turn into some sort of ~redemption arc~ for Penelope because, again, in the books she really didn’t have to make up for anything, definitely not to Colin, who was actually the one who had to do much of the heavy lifting in their relationship when he realized that he literally slept on her for years.
And now regarding Marina, like yes, she was wrong and I stand by that statement (but not as wrong as Penelope), but tbh I find it hard to be mad at her when they gave her such a racist storyline, as the scheming woc who gets pregnant out of wedlock and then tries to seduce the innocent white man, until the virtuous white girl needs to step up to save him. At least that’s what I thought initially as the writers intention, but honestly I’m not so sure anymore, I doubt they will continue to write her and Colin as a couple otherwise they would’ve bothered to show them interacting outside of her manipulating him and him acting like a bumbling idiot, the most sincere moment they had together was when he comforted her about the lie, but by that time this bitch (me) was empty and didn’t give a shit anymore. Literally all their other interactions where shown through Penelope’s POV to let us know she was sad, and Colin’s most significant scenes where again... with Penelope (because it isn’t as if he has a family and his own moments in the books outside of being an object for Penelope to pine after).
And as I said before, Marina had a—relatively—happy ending: married to a man she doesn’t love (just as she didn’t love Colin) but who will treat her right and care for her and her child in comfort. Is arguably a better ending than if she’d married Colin because now she doesn’t have to go through the trouble of explaining things to her new husband and run the risk of him resenting her forever. Phillip may not love her but he knows who he’s marrying and why he’s marrying her. That’s literally the same fate Marina had in the books, and it makes me wonder why, oh why would the writers do that.
Why create such a contrived plot to give a character who appears in one(1) chapter of an 8 books series then promptly dies, all at the expense of the characterization of one of the most beloved heroines of said books series? Why would you write this racist storyline for a character whose fate is dying? And now I’m horrified at the repercussions that can come with Marina committing su*cide like in canon, because the implications would be that Penelope would be responsible for it (and I hate the idea of blaming one person for the su*cide of another, fictional or otherwise, is harmful and we need to be careful with making such implications), which would make her even less redeemable or like, likable in general. Not to mention that would be like putting the final racist nail in Marina’s coffin by giving her that ending.
It makes me wonder, seriously, if Chris Van Dusen hated Romancing Mister Bridgerton that much, if he loathed the idea of writing a fat character finding love and getting sex that much. I just wanna know why lmfao.

pls give me everything on hattie & anthony!!!!
we stan a fucking couple though
the first thing that Anthony ever really loved about Hattie was way back when they first met, she was never fazed by his name.  She didn’t care that he was a viscount and she was a professor’s daughter, or about gender roles or anything, she always talked to him like an equal
She mocked he and Simon for dumb shit they did while drunk, dressed as a man to go to courses with them, joined both he and Simon in making fun of one another’s rakish ways (until she and Simon got together), and really she just always treated him like Anthony and not Viscount Bridgerton which was super refreshing to him
She also wasn’t afraid to call him an idiot and debate with him on anything and everytihng
But also she genuinely cares about him and respects him and supports him and they exchange letters endlessly after he leaves Oxford and she’s the only person he ever feels comfortable talking to about his anxieties over his position and whether or not he’s doing enough for his siblings, especially leading into Daphne’s first season!  She’s always seen him in a way that no one else does, as who he is and not who she thinks he should be, and it makes her the only person he’s ever been totally honest with
for Hattie... honestly she had a crush on Anthony before Simon, but Anthony was clearly just looking to fuck his way through England and she wanted more than that (and she did like Simon, she was in love with him, this isn’t just like “yeah consolation prize I guess”), and that’s what gave them the opportunity to become such close friends!
and Anthony is one of the few people who ever saw her as a person and not just a girl!  He never thought that she wasn’t as smart because of her gender, he never dismissed her opinions (even when he didn’t share them), and he and Simon always had way too much fun helping her sneak into courses with them.  Hattie took care of their drunk asses so often and, as much as she cheerfully bitched about it, she was always there for them.  The first time Anthony realized that he really saw her as a friend was the first time that she took care of he and Simon while they were hungover — she complained plenty about how disgusting they were but she also made up a very believable lie about food poisoning and pretended to be sick too so that they wouldn’t get in trouble!
They were still at Oxford when Anthony realized that he had romantic feelings for her, but she was with Simon and he genuinely wanted them to be happy, so he never said anything.  But god when she turned down Simon’s proposal he was floored and lowkey very hopeful, but Hattie never wanted to talk about it so Anthony fully respected her boundaries and never pushed!
Over the years after that, as they continued to exchange letters, Hattie opened up to Anthony a lot about her desire to learn and see the world and her resentment over never being allowed to do that because society had decided that all she was good for was pushing out babies for men to pass on their legacies — and that’s when Anthony promised himself that he would never tell her about his feelings, he never wanted her to feel like that’s all he saw her as.  (also yes, Hattie and Eloise are going to be very close and we love that for them tbfh, Eloise is the ultimate Hathony shipper because she wants her as a sister)
This is so rambly but like ultimately everything for them boils down to the fact that they trust each other so much and see each other so clearly and both of them feel like no one else in the world knows them as well as the other and it’s just
so fucking soft and I love it
but plenty of miscommunication goodness because Hattie is under the impression that Anthony has no interest in love or marriage and Anthony is under the impression that Hattie hates the idea of being someone’s wife so like
you know that’s going to be a fun time!

Chapters: 12/? Fandom: Bridgerton Rating: T Warnings: Presumed Character Death Relationships: Colin Bridgerton/Penelope Featherington,  Eloise Bridgerton/Penelope Featherington(besties),  Bridgerton Family Dynamics, Simon Hastings/Daphne Bridgerton Characters: Colin Bridgerton,  Penelope Featherington, Eloise Bridgerton, Anthony Featherington,  Benedict Bridgerton,  Portia Featherington, Violet Bridgerton, Genevieve Delacroix Additional Tags:  Bridgerton, Polin Summary:  Unexpected bad news arrives for the Bridgerton Family (and friends) regarding Colin's travels. This will be a series that is set after "The Duke and I" or season one of the show. It is a companion piece to "Goodbyes".
It took nearly a week for the tensions to calm down after what posthumously was dubbed ‘the night of the burnt dresses’.  Anthony for his part had attempted to make things right by purchasing a series of new dresses for Penelope.  He knew that he took things a bit too far but he’d only wanted to protect her like he would any of his sisters.  At the end of the day, he wouldn’t change a thing about the actions he’d taken.
He wouldn’t come right out and say it but he also felt a bit like he’d done the poor girl a favor.  Her mother had clearly been dressing her in poor fitting dresses in the poorest excuse of fabric colors for years.  Dressed in decent clothing, it was abundantly clear that had she had her new wardrobe in the last season, things might have played a little differently for her.
He knew better than to put that out into the universe though since he’d barely escaped unscathed from the daily glares, silence and intermittent tongue lashings from the family.
Benedict hadn’t exactly been forgiven either.  Whenever he came into the room, people got up and walked out all together.  Eloise and Benedict had hardly went a day since Eloise was born without talking to each other and even she was keeping her distance.
It was enough to drive anyone mad.  There was only so long that Benedict could avoid being home by drinking and making art.  As much as he needed his outlets, he also did enjoy the comfort of family around him.
He needed to take action but he didn’t know what to do.
Fortunately for him, he didn’t have to do anything.
He was alone the study when he heard the door open.  He was busy working away with a sketch with his charcoals and he didn’t bother to look up. In his mind it was either going to be a servant or someone who would walk right back out.
He was surprised when it wasn’t.
“Benedict,” he heard after a long moment.
He looked up and there was a strange sense of déjà vu that hit him.  Just like she’d sought him out before on the swings and things had seemed to be working themselves out, she was there again.
She cleared her throat.  There was something quiet, unsure about her voice which reminded him of how she’d always been instead of the confident girl that he’d been watching her grow into.
“Can we speak?”  she asked.
“I’ve been trying to speak to a week,” he said knowing there was some edge to his voice and he softened it once he caught himself. “I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings or deceive you.  I was just caught off guard and -  I would have told you I didn’t send the dress.”
“This isn’t about the dress,” she told after a moment, lips pursing into a tight line.  “I know that none of you would intentionally hurt me. It was my thought for jumping to conclusions and thinking that you were trying to romance me. I’ve never actually had anyone attempt to romance me so I was too blinded by it to think logically and Eloise didn’t help.”
“I didn’t know that you wanted me to romance you,” Benedict said after a long moment raising an eyebrow.   It was uncanny really that even now the thought of actually romancing her was foreign, weird.  Even after all these weeks, he still thought of her like another sister. If he set his mind to it, he could do this properly.  “I mean, I thought that you hadn’t set your mind to accepting my proposal so I was honestly giving you the space you required.”
“I don’t know what I want,” Penelope confessed after a long moment.  That didn’t seem an accurate depiction of how she felt though since she knew precisely what she wanted and it was something that she could never have.  All the time in the world could pass and she’d still wonder about how differently her life might have been had Colin not been lost at sea.  “I won’t begrudge you secrets because I have plenty of my own – I can’t marry someone that I can’t trust and I wouldn’t want that for someone else.  You can’t grow to love someone if you can’t trust them.”
It was that point that he realized she was still wearing the ring he’d given her and everything seemed to fall into place. She was actually considering going forward with this after everything.  An even bigger alarm went off in his head at the fact she thought she could have some secret so big that he might have a problem with it. He cocked his head gazing at her as if trying to read through it all to figure it out.  There was literally nothing there.
“I won’t lie to you any more then,” he said after a long moment. “And while I can’t think of anything more than a white lie that you are burdened by, I suppose you can do the same.”
Penelope visibly winced at that.  There was something about the expression on her face that made it clear that she was holding back something big and he was at a loss so he just listened and waited, prepared for her secret to be something absolutely innocent.
“Then I must tell you something now,” she started. “You must promise to never tell anyone.”
“I promise,” he told her. He nodded, anticipating building and a chuckle already threatening at his lips for whatever would come out of her mouth.
“I’m Lady Whistledown,” she confessed.
Confusion flooded his feature and that chuckle did escape though almost waiting for her to laugh as well. Surely, this was a joke!  There was absolutely no way.
“Did Eloise put you up to this?”
“No, I’m serious.”
“But – that’s impossible!” he found himself arguing knowing that there was no way that the awkward little wallflower who hung around his little sister was that the proprietor of that wretched gossip column. “There is no way that you’d have nearly ruined yourself and the whole Marina Thompson thing easily could have –“
“Colin,”  she said after a long moment as if to justify it. “I couldn’t let Colin go through with it.  I tried to talk him out of it and he wasn’t listening so I used the only tool that I had that would stop him.  I’d rather be a spinster than someone who lets. I regret the hurt that it caused but I don’t regret – well, I do actually.  If I’d not done it, he’d still be here now and you wouldn’t be trying to ruin your life by marrying me.”
That was enough to render his speechless and he rose from where he’d been sitting, pacing for a moment to try and gather his thoughts.  His family had been absolutely obsessed with that woman, trying to figure out who she was every time they delighted in what she said or were angered.  He didn’t know whether to be upset or proud that Penelope was capable of such a stir.
The truth of the matter was that she’d never said anything that was false (as far as he was aware) about their family or other families. She merely speculated, stated what she observed and candid.  He couldn’t hold that against her, especially when more times than not she’d saved them.
The fact that she blamed herself for saving Colin from a loveless marriage built upon a lie hit him like a ton of bricks and the heaviness of it reminded him of the grief that he’d locked down. He wasn’t happy that his brother was gone but he didn’t blame Penelope or anyone else for the death.  He could have just as easily blamed Anthony for the fact he’d felt like he needed to see more of the world.
Benedict let out a long breath of air that he didn’t know he’d been holding before crossing the room,  decisively taking her hands as if to show that this information didn’t bother her.  He wasn’t going to go and tell the Ton this information.
“You’re not the reason he’s dead,” he said after a long minute.  She wasn’t quite looking at him though so he reached down to force her to look up at him.  “Besides, Colin would be furious if he knew you were blaming yourself for that.”
She was clearly going to dismiss the words but it was essential that he knew as much.
“Well he at least wasn’t furious enough to come back and haunt me,”  she said quietly after a minute. She’d honestly begged him to do it and he hadn’t.
“Well you’re just not looking in the right place. He’d haunt the kitchens. Even in death he’d be a bottomless pit,”  Benedict added, with a sad, wiry smile. Even if it was painful to talk about him, it did feel nice to have Colin’s name not be avoided.
“I can’t argue that,” she said after a long moment.  “Are you really sure though?”
“Yes, I’m sure,” he insisted.  “You’re just crazy enough to survive our family.  We might as well make it official.  I suppose, I could put one condition on it.”
“And what might that condition be?”
“Our first born son,” Benedict said after a long moment pausing to try and make the words feel less weird. “He’d have to be named Colin.”
Something about that touched Penelope to the core and she felt tears forming in her eyes. She wasn’t quite sure how much of that was still grief and how much was the moment.  Her words didn’t form for a long moment.
“What if we only have daughters?” she finally asked.
“Colleen clearly,” Benedict added with mirth.

Beloved Readers it appears that the mourning black of recent days is about to transform to new, exciting shades. It  thrills me to announce that the confirmed bachelorette Penelope Featherington will not be forced to spend season as a wallflower.
As previously reported, she took up residence with the Bridgerton Family some time ago. While there was speculation around the Ton to what this might mean,  we can now confirm that from grief new beginnings have formed.
Benedict Bridgerton, the second eldest son of the family, has allegedly proposed and said proposal has been accepted.  The news has brought joy where in recent weeks there has been little positive news to report…

some thoughts on anthony bridgerton
I’ve been stewing in my feelings ever since I finished bingeing the show so I decided to get on my anthony bridgerton soapbox, because S2 has got so much in store for this boy.
...as head of the family
the way I see it, the divide between book!anthony and show!anthony is so large bc show!anthony has a bit more growing up to do to than book!anthony did especially with the changes in the timeline. this is the first time he’s had to present one of his sisters it makes sense he’d be overprotective (he’s mentioned to be this even in the books). he only really overstepped with berbrooke when violet brought up how edmund would have had daphne married already (and we all know how this boy has severe daddy issues) but he backed off and he grew from it! the prince had zero faults and was the best option yet he didn’t force daphne’s hand! this gives me hope that the writers do know that anthony just wants the best for his family, and are exaggerating his anxieties about being the head of the family for the drama (and of course to have daphne spout vaguely feminist statements)
as for his supposed failures in failing to fill in his father’s shoes, I can really only think of two scenes when this was brought up, first by violet then by simon. of which both times I don’t consider to be very reliable. simon said it because he was upset from his marital problems, and was lashing out. violet on the other hand was upset with daphne’s situation but she was also definitely upset by the fact that he was keeping siena as a mistress. no matter how sympathetic violet is portrayed, she is still a marriage-minded mama and she would see his being a rake as a neglect of his duties. but despite these things, he is shown to take his responsibilities seriously (see: daphne’s suitors, siena mentioning he constantly checks his watch and runs off to his sisters/mother, working late in his study)
...in love
and speaking of siena, I know a lot of people are upset or frustrated that she was made a major plot point, and I can’t say that I disagree just because I feel like they didn’t really develop her further than as anthony’s mistress (except for that one scene with genevieve which I loved). but really I don’t see her as a major obstacle to the events of TVWLM.
1) siena being his only onscreen partner when anthony’s supposed to be a rake so kate doesn’t want edwina anywhere near him? daphne’s first impression of simon is tainted even moreso because he’s friends with anthony. if his own sister thinks this way, I’m sure members of the ton would have even more to say about him. but I can also see the writers going down the path of anthony sleeping around after swearing off love even if he is looking for a wife, because let’s not forget that anthony was okay with the idea of having mistresses because he was never going to fall in love with his wife (sidenote: I wonder what the odds are of kate having her own sexual awakening by seeing anthony in flagrante delicto with someone ala the study scene in the book, I mean the drama of her being angry with him because he’s courting her sister warring with her newfound feelings? it writes itself)
2) kate was the first and only woman he ever loved so him being in love with siena is all wrong? well for starters, his relationship with siena isn’t developed enough to sell this love. he says that he loves her but he constantly left her to attend to his other responsibilities, he cut her off when violet told him about her disapproval of his actions, the only time he thought of running away with her was when he thought he was going to be exiled. he cares for her to be sure, and maybe in love with how she makes him feel, but his actions don’t really reflect of a man who has found The One. even in their final scene together when siena breaks it off (which I’m glad she did because I love anthony but really the poor girl), she knows that he wasn’t in it 100% and she tells him so. when he meets kate though, it will be different. it will be different because she knows how important family is VS siena’s who only had herself. it will be different because he will open up to her about his fears, and she will do the same, and they will heal together. in that way he will realize that it is different, and that it is real, and I cannot wait. (PS: personally I don’t think it would detract from kate and anthony’s love story that she’s not the first because she would most definitely be the last, but I know that might be an unpopular opinion)
TLDR: I love anthony bridgerton very much and I look forward to watching his growth because he still has a long way to go

Random and Not So Random thoughts while watching Bridgerton: Season 1, Episode 6
It has taken me a while to do this. But I write this shit down so....
I wonder if they got busy in that carriage.
Probably.
Ok Clyvedon! Y'all are definitely not in the square anymore.
Aww Mrs. Colson. You're so proper and ready to show off and he's just trying to break that back in.
Gahh that place.
Ok Simon, go off!
Aw we're really just diverting there.
You really don't want to know Hyacinth.
Eloise is not here for the shits.
Oh, Colin. You fucking idiot. The one time Violet and Anthony are in agreement.
Colin you happy, dumb boy.
Brothels though?
Colin has a point. He is older than Daphne.
To be fair Colin and Daphne are both getting okie doked.
You horny mfs. I love it.
"You are already Duchess of all this." Yes please.
Ooooh that flip and the way he patted at her hips. They are too good.
Aw Daphne is trying to be proper and Simon is like "fuck all that."
Your Graces.
Jeffries dgaf about this damn honeymoon.
Oh Daphne, she just wants to show you around without YOUR commentary.
Redecorating? Didn't she say she did a bunch of improvements?
"A perfect Duchess." Ok you shady bitch.
Yeah that nursery shit is coming back.
All dressed up and no where to go.
"You're so far away." He wants his WIFE!
They have no chill and the staff don't know how to react.
Mrs. Colson absolutely does not approve.
Girl he hates that place. Gut it!
This man and the way he takes off gloves. Good fucking gawd.
Their poor staff.
I swear I swear I swear that man man is living, breathing, dripping seduction.
Well shit take it outside then.
Queue the rain.
Yes. Remove the wet clothes. ALLUM!!!!!
He is the king of playin with it. And I fucking love it.
"Do you like this?" Fuck yes! Talk. To. Me.
I wonder how many orgasms this man has caused.
"Tell me what you want." Keep talking, yes.
And by "you" she meant that dick.
"Does that hurt?" No boo, it sure doesn't.
But your ignorance on the subject does. Him taking advantage of your ignorance also does.
I love love love Simon but I'm having a harder time with his evasion now that they're actively getting busy.
She's bound to figure it out though, right?
Ahh they're still hot af to me.
Oh shit they're still going.
That picnic. Omfg. Flippin that ass like.....
Head on a ladder?!?!?! Get you some Daphne. Oh sweet Simon....
Sex on a ladder too.
They're really like "fuck the staff." And the staff is like "haha, keep fuckin."
Don't go there Mrs. Colson....
Welp.
That shoe dropping. Gawd yes.
Daphne really went from knowing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to getting that Grade A like a beast.
Though Simon is obviously a withholder, the man is sexually attentive and attuned to her physical desires. He comes to please, indeed.
That tangle.
Ok, girl tell Rose your business.
I do love Rose. I want more of her.
"His physical inability to have children." Oh the sting of lies and ignorance.
"Difficult entanglement." Go head Rose.
Oh Colin, you fucked up lil buddy.
Hyacinth is a treasure.
I like that Violet does try to be supportive.
Penelope and her passive aggressive ass is saucy.
She's mad af.
The sisters do crack me up.
Penelope is dripping salt.
Oh Eloise. They really are putting you out there homie.
Awkward Marina.
Portia is mf hyped! She is all about that social climbing.
But she's gotta negotiate the bag before she pop tags on new Dresses.
Aw shit Marina caught Delacroix. Her French accent was a bit cartoonish.
Curious Eloise.
Oh children.
Oh poor oblivious Daphne. Simon, help your wife.
A fucking tie. Bitch they gotta kill them to eat them. Simon, again, help your wife. Tell your wife THINGS!
Y'all fucking dumb off all that sex and living in la la land apparently.
Well somebody liked his evil ass daddy.
Diplomatic Daphne.
Another sprinkle of kids....and pregnancy too.
I saw that longing look.
Aww she's worried he's hurt by being around children. If only you knew.
"I thought only of you." Really, mf?! As you keep up this lie.
She's so optimistic about her circumstances.
He's lucky he's beautiful. And that I pity him a bit. Because he's a motherfucker.
How did you get so lucky? Well you're lying to your wife and she doesn't know how sperm works sooooooo there's that.
What a beautiful expansive scene though.
Penelope is PISSED.
No belly yet.
Passive. Aggressive.
Oh this dinner is so awkward.
Portia you are not subtle at all.
Anthony is still CLEARLY not here for this engagement.
Oh is she about to snitch.
Well shit. She's kind of snitching.
Aww. He thinks your such a good friend, but hes got this.
You're sneaky and he's stupid.
Marina is hustling.
Eloping is always a grand idea. Colin you fucking dummy.
Marina is so relieved.
Aw where's Simon?
Sad Daphne is not a good look.
Grouchy workaholic Simon is not a good look either....but he does have a lot of responsibility in all fairness.
Mrs. Colson is so sick of Daphne.
Homegirl is just trying to find her footing. At least Rose stays supportive.
Have I said how much I love Rose?
Damn no one wants to talk to Daphne.
Aw she's befriended the pregnant lady with the screaming toddler.
I'm glad someone is finally explaining shit to Daphne. She can't grow if she don't know.
Too busy for his wife now......I'm not liking this vibe.
Aw she's trying to hash it out with Mrs. Colson.
Oooh she's looking for guidance about Simon.
He really hasn't told her shit about his life.
The power dynamic of their relationship is frustrating.
All this talk of being barren.....
She misses Simon's mama.
Strong seed got her thinking!
Penelope you sneaky, lying ass....what are you up to?
She has hope yet again. She about to expose her mother.
She ain't giving up.
Marina is damned and determined to marry Colin.
Oh Marina went there THERE.
You're gonna see your wife, Your Fucking Grace.
Stressy Simon is such a grouch.....but I'm not judging. I'm the same way.
But when they're affectionate, fuck.
He really just tossed her up on that desk like "Fuck work."
And he proceeded to fuckin work that mf thang.
How many people in the world are fucking like crazy right now because their significant others stay turned on by this show.
If I were not single, I would most definitely be pouncing on my partner ALL. THE. TIME.
Ok. Back to the show.
That was a mighty aggressive pull-out.
Relatable Simon. I too like foods after fucks.
Oh shit Daphne connecting the dots.
Rose out here saving the day like usual.
Well at least Daphne knows where babies come from now.
Everything is about to shatter, amrite?
She can't even hear a word he says. She feels so betrayed.
The piglet.
Dat ass though. And those shoulders.
Yeah that's gonna be a no tonight.
Oooh and now he wakes up without her.
She's fucking heartbroken.
The man she loves took away her choice with his deceit.
He allowed her to believe he was unable, not unwilling.
Would she have married him if he told the truth?
He was ready to die about the shit and still lied though.
All he ever had to do was tell her the whole fucking truth.
Everything this WOMAN knows about love and sex, she's learned from this man (and the real MVP Rose). He has literally taught her everything from the start of her sexual awakening. He knows better than anyone how ignorant she is regarding literally ANYTHING sexual in nature. I know he's insanely damaged, but this fucking hurts.
It's a unique feeling of unease and helplessness when you feel or realize you don't have agency over your own body.
An absence of the option to consent if you will.
I know this is a show, and I suppose it's doing its job because it's getting me deep into my thoughts and feelings. And I sure as a mf ENJOY THE FUCK out of watching them literally breathe in the same room with each other....among the many other things they do onscreen together. I guess I'm just heartbroken too. Shit. Plus y'all know I love tf out of my girl Daphne.
Ok back to the show again. This episode is fucking with my emotions.
Daphne is stewing!
But fuck if this isn't romantic as a mf.
These 2 fuck me up every time!
JPOLND - The End. That's this song. And this song is perfect.
Yes y'all! Rip them clothes off.
Daphne looks wild as hell. Carnal. She has a carnal look about her.
Ok bitch. Climb that mf tree then!
Is she anger-fucking him?!
Either way, he's loving it!!!
This song really is perfect.
Oh shit she's not letting up.
Fuck.
This shoe dropping?! Gawd NO!
She was literally like you took my choice so I took yours.
These fucking two.
He's hot with it for good reason for sure, but she is going in!
How the fuck could you think she knew how this worked when she didn't know what masturbation, let alone sex was until you got a hold of her?
YOU. PLAYED. ON. HER. IGNORANCE.
Maybe this conversation should have been had before y'all got naked.
They're both right in their own ways.
But they are absofuckinglutely wrong in so many of their own ways too.
He didn't ask for her pity and she didn't ask for his betrayal.
They are tearing me apart right now!
Big Sean said it best. "I guess drama makes for the best content."
I'm still rooting for them. I love growth and we still got 2 episodes left. They can't stay stuck like this, I'm sure.
Oh hey Whistledown.
Aww go to your friend.
Wtf is going on?
Are they all trying to kill me?
Aw fuck. Marina has been blasted by Whistledown. It's over.
Pure little Colin.
Oh Simon is heartbroken and Daphne.......she's desperate for a baby.
"Can the ends ever justify such wretched means?" That's a great question Whistledown. I'll have to get back to you on that.
I will close this with happiness because I refuse to accept this heartbreak.

2 prompts. he / she will never be you, and I would rather do difficult with you than easy with someone else. For santhony
Thanks for the prompts! I chose to do the second, hope you like it! <3
santhony + “I would rather do difficult with you than easy with someone else”, set during 1.08, after Siena agrees to go with the ball with Anthony, wc. 1.9k (ao3)
She checked the time on Anthony’s pocket watch on the bedside table and groaned. Siena swore the damned thing moved faster than any normal watch. By this rate, she was going to be terribly late and wouldn't have any time for a quick warm-up before her performance tonight.
The man to blame for her lateness stirred behind her and proceeded to place light kisses on her shoulder, his hands around her waist pulling their bodies closer, his front against her back.
“I am not done with you yet.” He said, his mouth moving up, trailing kisses from her shoulder up to her neck and sucking on the spot just below her ear that he knew drove her crazy.
Siena couldn’t help the moan that escaped her lips.
“We can’t.” Her protest came out weaker than she would’ve liked. They had spent most of the afternoon in bed, and she still felt hunger for his touch, his warmth next to her. She had tried giving him up, but the time apart hadn’t helped at all. She wondered if there would ever be a time where she would be immune to him. It seemed unlikely. “I must get ready for my performance.”
His kisses stopped immediately, though his mouth still hovered on her neck and she could feel his breath caressing her skin as he spoke. “I thought you would get someone to cover for you. How will you be performing if we’re going to the ball?”
Siena bit her lip. He got her there.
“Well, I thought I would do my show and meet you at the ball later.”
Anthony frowned, though she couldn’t see it. What she proposed wasn’t unheard of. The ton’s parties were known for extending well into the evening and many people in fact attended the opera or the theater first before arriving fashionably late at whatever ball they had also be invited to. But it wasn’t what Anthony had in mind when he invited her to go with him. He was planning to meet her at her door, with the prettiest bouquet of flowers he could find - he had never given her flowers before, not even to congratulate her on her performances, and he knew she would understand the importance of the gesture. They would ride on his carriage (during which he would have to contain himself to not kiss her and ruin her dress) and enter the ball together, arm in arm, so there wouldn’t be any mistakes about the current status of relationship. Then proceed to dance the night away. Just the two of them. In no part of his scenario, he expected to spend spend half of his evening sulking in a corner and waiting for her to finish her performance. And there was the way she had said it…
“But you’re still coming, right?”
“Of course!” Her voice was too high and her answer came too quickly. She realized it at the same time Anthony turned her around so he could see her face.
“Siena…”
She tried turning back and getting out of the bed, but Anthony was faster, his hand on her chin, keeping her in place and their eyes locked. “No, don’t do that. Don’t turn away from me, Siena. Tell me…what’s going on?”
She hated when Anthony went soft on her. It made it so much harder to be logical and practical. But she knew she had to.
“Maybe going to the ball wouldn’t be the best idea.”
“I told you, no one will say a thing.” He answered confidently, smiling at her.
Siena sat properly in the bed, his hands falling from her face to her thigh as she started speaking.
“And I said, not to you. Not directly. But are you ready for all the gossip and the whispers? For the men commenting about how they had me, with my legs open in my dressing room?” Before Anthony could even think of defending her honor, she added, “And it will be true! In some cases at least. Are you ready for that? And the women, your mother and your sisters…maybe they won’t say anything to you. But they will say it to me.”
Anthony sighed. Siena had always been the most pragmatical out of the two of them, his brave soprano who still didn’t call him by his first name despite sharing his bed for the last two years. And, as always, she wasn’t wrong to have concerns. He wanted them to have their happy ending. It wouldn’t be as easy, or as painless, as he had initially told her, but it would be worth it. Of that, he was certain.
“Is that what you’re worried about? The gossip?"
She bit her lip. It wasn’t. Not exactly. Being the talk of the ton would be nothing new - she was the most notorious opera singer in London, after all -, and it would have been worth it. If she had been certain of the outcome, that is.
She wasn’t.
“You can change your mind, my lord. At anytime.” Before Anthony could contest, she continued, “You did it already! You promised you would always take care of me! And you changed your mind.” Regret quickly crossed his face and Siena could feel the tears forming in her eyes at the reminder of that morning, when he had tossed her aside as if she had been nothing more than an inconvenience. It wouldn’t do to start crying now. She was stronger than that.
“Right now, you’re happy we’re back together and you think we can overcome anything. What’s going to happen when everyone you know and respects turns against us?”
“You're right.” Anthony answered quickly and Siena couldn’t hide her surprise. She had wanted him to come to his senses and agree with her, of course she did. His idea had been utter foolishness after all, born out of the high of being in each other’s arms once more. But she had expected him to at least put up a fight. It was okay, though. It only confirmed she had been right all along. She wasn’t disappointed. She wasn’t.
“Of course I am. So we can forget ever going public…”
“You're right that it won’t be as easy as I said.” He interrupted her. “Me being a viscount…my sister being a duchess…none of that will stop the talk of the ton. In fact, my mother might be the one to most strongly oppose us being together.” Anthony couldn’t hide his grimace. His mother’s reaction to his choice was the one thing he had tried to avoid thinking about at all costs. Violet Bridgerton wouldn’t give up just because he and Siena went to the Hastings’ ball together. As a matter of fact, it might only serve as further motivation on her relentless pursuit of a suitable bride for her first-born. He could count on Benedict to be on his side (his brother was pursuing Siena’s closest friend, after all) and Eloise’s curious nature would endear Siena to her, he hoped. But what about Colin? Would his brother be accepting of their relationship, when Anthony had so adamantly opposed his engagement to Miss Thompson? And Daphne and Simon, would they come to his aid as he expected, or would they worry about their own status first? Simon only referred to Siena as his mistress and Daphne wanted nothing more than to be a proper lady of the ton. Maybe neither of them wouldn’t be willing drag the Hastings' name into another scandal just for Anthony’s sake. His own family might not offer the support he craved, though he hoped they would come to understand his decision. He couldn’t keep hurting his own heart in the name of duty and honor. “It won’t be easy. But, Siena, I would rather do difficult with you than easy with someone else.”
She shook her head. “You don’t mean that, my lord. You can’t mean that.”
Anthony let out a small laugh of incredulity, “Can’t I? And may I ask, why not?”
Siena opened and closed her mouth, at loss for words. Before she could come up with an answer, though, Anthony's hands enveloped her waist and he pulled her back to the bed and on top of him, kissing her quickly in the mouth. Surprised, it took her a moment to respond, but he was already pulling away, though his arms remained around her, his hands positioned low on her back.
“I know what this is.” He said, smiling at her. “You're scared. Scared I’m going to leave again, break things off once more and let you deal with these people’s snide comments on your own. That I’m going to see you the same way they do and I’ll turn away.” Her brown eyes looked at him with surprise and she wondered if she was indeed so transparent or if he just knew her that well. Sometimes she dreamed of the life she and Anthony could have together. More often than not, these dreams turned sour as the Anthony in them realized she would never be more than a lowly opera singer, only good for entertaining him at night between the sheets.
“One day you will.” She murmured softly against his chest.
“No, no, never.” He protested, holding her face up, and hoping she could see the truth in his eyes and in his voice. “Siena, I wish you could see yourself as I do. The most talent, incredible, funny, smart woman I’ve ever met. There’s no one but you. Not for me. I’m sorry that I hurt you and made you ever doubt that.”
She closed her eyes for a moment and Anthony saw a single tear escape as she sighed, her hands on his chest shaking for a moment. “You make it so hard for me to do the right thing.”
He kissed her cheek where the tear had dried before turning towards her mouth and kissing her again, hard and desperate.
“I want you to do the right thing for us. For us and no one else.” His hand was in her hair, their heads as close together as they could without touching. “Choose us, Siena.”
It sounded so simple when he said it. He made her believe anything was possible. But she knew this thing between them was fragile, powerful and uncontainable, yes, but fragile. It had been broken and mended together by sheer force of will, and any strong push could shatter it for good. If they wanted it survive and flourish, then they first had to protect it.
“I can’t go to the ball with you. Not tonight.” She saw the disappointment flash through his eyes and be replaced by a mask of cold indifference as he nodded in understanding, already starting to pull away from her.
“But I am not going to the opera either”, she quickly added and Anthony looked at her in confusion.
“I thought…maybe we could stay in tonight? We can have dinner with your brother and Genevieve later.”
Siena looked at him expectantly.
A compromise, that’s what she proposed. Maybe they weren’t ready for the harsh light of day and the deep cutting remarks of society, but it didn’t mean they would never be. In the mean time, they could allow a little light in as they grew stronger in the dark.
“I suppose…Benedict and Madame Delacroix shall make for a decent conversation.” He answered and the smile Siena gave him was so bright it was almost blinding. “As long as you’re by my side, my lady.”
And, because he knew she would, Anthony kissed her before she could voice her protest over his choice of endearment.

Why don’t you like Daphne
TW: sexual assault / It’s not that I don’t like Daphne. Honestly, all of the four oldest siblings had the potential to all be my faves of the clan because while they are all emotionally dumb as hell for most of their books they’re all snarky and fun and intelligent and charismatic and exactly the kind of characters I love ( i’m biased towards older/oldest siblings mostly because i am one ) . I know this is harped on to death but I loved Daphne, even in her naïveté & her ‘ cool girl ‘ aesthetic, until she decided to sexually assault her husband. I’ve seen a lot of defense of Daphne in that scene that she’s young & she didn’t know much about consent or sex at all, in big part due to Violet’s lack of preparing her daughter for what having sex meant ( The Duke & I is a walking ad for comprehensive sex education tbh ). I’ll even say that Simon was not in the right at all for lying to her about his ability to have kids or what ‘spending’ himself on the sheets meant but that doesn’t mean that he deserved any of what Daphne put him through. There are a few reasons that I wanted to rage quit TD&I over the last two nights, even more so than the first two times I read it in 2006 & 2012.
One ) I’d argue that Daphne knew damn well about consent because she punches Nigel Berbrooke in the beginning of the book for trying to kiss her after she’d refused him. So - that’s not an excuse . She knew that no meant no for her, why was it ok when it came to Simon? Not only does the book start that scene with a Drunk Simon in bed with Daphne but Daphne waking up and deciding to take advantage of Simon’s drunkenness. “ Daphne felt the strangest most, intoxicating surge of power. He was in her control, she realized. He was asleep and probably still more than a little drunk, and she could do whatever she wanted with him. She could have whatever she wanted. “ The book states multiple times how strong Daphne is, how she’s stronger than other women because she has four brother, because she’s had to help raise the littler ones & JQ makes sure that she uses that to her advantage. ‘ Daphne bore down on him with all her might ... she planted her hands underneath him using all of her strength to hold him against her . she would not lose him this time. She would not lose this chance. ’
Two ) I really loved Daphne & Simon’s easy friendship & how believably she fell in love with him & that scene & the last 2/3 of the book ruin any goodwill that friendship turned to relationship has gotten in the first part of the book. Especially when after she had done this Simon goes straight into a panic attack & his stutter is triggered to the point where he could barely talk to her because he felt so violated & tried to tell her that but couldn’t. “He opened his mouth to pour invective over her, to castigate her for betraying him, for taking advantage of him, but his throat tightened, and his tongue swelled, and he couldn’t even begin a word much less finish one.” & it never gets talked about, he never gets to tell her that HE felt wrong about what had just happened. It’s blanketed over because he thinks she’s pregnant & it’s treated like Daphne is the victim. As if some great conspiracy not to give her a child was more important than the fact that she sexually assaulted her husband, not only that but she didn’t care & tried to rationalize it after. ‘She didn’t feel guilty. She knew she should be, but she wasn’t. She hadn’t planned it. She hadn’t looked at him while he was sleeping and thought - he’s probably still drunk. I can make love to him and capture his seed and he’ll never know. It hadn’t happened that way. ‘ Except it had, two pages earlier. Literally.
Three ) I’ll admit that in 2006 when I first binged the series ( I picked up TVWLM first so i was more than excited that it was a series & TVWLM my first romance novel at that ) I didn’t see anything wrong with The Duke & I. I’d met Simon & Daphne already in TVWLM and knew that they were happy and pregnant, but I was also 14. 14 year old me thought that that was fine & that appalls 28 year old me because there are women who STILL think that it’s ok, women who were older than me when they read it the first time & don’t understand that what JQ did to Simon was not ok because she tried to write in such a way that made it seem like Simon actually wanted it, despite being drunk & despite telling daphne multiple times he did not want kids. because if it had been the other way around ( daphne didn’t want kids & Simon ' tricked ‘ her & held her down while she was vulnerable to impregnate her ) it would have STILL been sexual assault). It perpetuates every stereotype that male victims of assault have to deal with. ‘She was strong but he was much stronger than her.’ ‘He was drunk but he got hard in his sleep & went along with it when he woke up.’ & I know that it’s a book, it’s fiction that came out in 2000 which was a different time, when male victims of sexual assault were taken even less seriously but that doesn’t change the fact that it was wrong & I think it’s important that books that are problematic are acknowledged for what perception they’re putting out into the world. Modern romance novels are about empowering women & making it easier to talk about the fact that women were/are sexual beings & the men that love them don’t have to be aggressive with them but see them as their equal. That’s what they’ve always been about for me & it’s disappointing that people STILL make excuses for what this book perpetuates. That being said, I hope that they either remove the scene all together or they make sure that it is handled properly ( not like law and order svu but acknowledge what happened to Simon & make a serious effort to make sure that power imbalance doesn’t happen again ) in the show.

Day 17: Blanket Fort
Welcome to Fluffytown
Summary: Simon and Baz are spending the holidays at Pitch Manor. Simon just wanted to take a nap, but Mordelia has other plans...
Word Count: 1545
This was heavily inspired by the blanket fort episode of the tv show Community. If you want to see their epic blanket fort in all its glory, watch this clip.
Read on AO3
I take a deep breath, appreciating the fresh forest air. I love going on runs when I’m at home for the holidays. The scenery is gorgeous, and it reminds me of playing football, which I dearly miss.
As I approach the manor, I can’t help but smile when I remember who’s inside. My family is, sure. It’s been great to see them, even though Mordelia can be a pain in my arse, and Fiona makes suggestive faces whenever Simon and I walk into a room.
Simon. It’s him I’m more excited about. He said he was taking a nap when I left for my run. I think he ate too much at lunch and needed to sleep it off. Typical. Disgustingly, my heart swells just thinking about him. This is our first real Christmas here together, and it’s been wonderful. Simon fits in with my family surprisingly well, and I love watching him play with my siblings.
Taking a huge swig of my water bottle, I let myself in the house. It’s strangely quiet, so the kids might be down for naps. “The kids” includes my boyfriend, apparently.
I walk up the steps to my room, panting. My hair is slick with sweat and has somehow fallen in my face in spite of my headband. I recognize that I probably reek, but I want to kiss Simon before I shower.
Smiling, I open the door to my room, prepared to creep over to the bed and softly wake him up. Instead, I’m greeted by an angry Mordelia.
“Baz! You are not allowed in here!” She guards a pile of blankets with folded arms.
“What have you done with Simon?” I grumble.
I hold back a laugh as Simon pops his head out beneath the blankets. I need to maintain my anger for Mordelia’s sake. If she knew I found this even slightly funny, she’d hijack Simon more often.
“How did she wake you up for this?” I ask.
“Never had the chance to sleep,” Simon shrugs.
“I think we’ve answered enough of your questions,” Mordelia says, turning to Simon. She points down, and he immediately sinks back into the fort.
“I’m showering, and then you’re cleaning this up,” I say, turning away from the door.
“Did you hear something, Simon?” I hear Mordelia ask.
“Nope!” Comes a voice muffled by blankets.
I roll my eyes, but a smile creeps its way onto my lips. I love that the two of them get on so well. I take a long shower, trying to warm my bones from the chilly December air, and then head downstairs for some tea. Might as well indulge them a little longer.
In actuality, I end up indulging them for a few hours. I take my book to the study and get so warm and content by the fire that I have no intention of moving. If Simon needed me, he would come find me. He knows I end up here, reading by the fire, at least once a day.
We’re three days into our stay at the manor, and Simon and I have gotten into a nice routine. It always involves me reading for a bit while he goes and plays with my siblings or watches a movie. It’s nice, almost domestic.
Finally, I snap out of my reading trance as Mordelia marches into the study.
“Basilton. You’ve been summoned to your quarters. The builders have finished the renovations,” she says, then promptly walks away.
How much have they done? I don’t have much time to think, because I realize I’m meant to be following her. As Mordelia opens the door to my room, I can’t help but gasp. They’ve basically turned my entire room into a blanket fort.
The blankets are strewn together so that it almost looks like one big quilt. Upon closer inspection, I realize the fort is a quilted mess of sheets, blankets, and shower curtains. I’m sure Daphne will be happy about that. From here I can see that they’ve strung Christmas lights through the whole thing, which sort of gives it a nice atmosphere. The pillows they’ve added to cushion the floor and serve as seating make it feel cosy. Crowley, I can’t believe I’m saying all this about a blanket fort.
Simon emerges from the entrance, and I have no idea how he fit in there with his wings. “Welcome to Fluffytown!” He exclaims, looking proud of himself.
“This is amazing,” I say, a hint of sarcasm in my voice.
“Shut up, Baz. I know you love it,” Mordelia rolls her eyes. She’s gotten quite good at doing that since we last visited.
“Can I give you the tour?” Simon waves his arm to the entrance ceremoniously.
I follow behind him reluctantly, both of us crawling on our hands and knees. I have to be careful not to trip over Simon’s tail, but it seems like they’ve made the sides extra wide and tall for him. It’s sweet, really. The fort is mostly one long tunnel, but occasionally another tunnel intersects it. Simon keeps saying ridiculous things like down that hall is the teddy bear room, and over there is the Turkish district.
“Over here,” Simon points to a small alcove to our left, “is the Belgian chocolate tasting room.”
“I’m not engaging in this make believe, Simon,” I mumble.
He turns around to face me, incredulous. “It’s not make believe, Baz. It’s literally the Belgian chocolate room.” Apparently my face still shows my disbelief, because he drags me in.
Somehow, it really is a Belgian chocolate room. They’ve taken our stash from the kitchen and put it on the makeshift table.
“Care to try our dark chocolate with nuts?” Simon wriggles his eyebrows at me.
I settle on the cushions next to him, resting my head on his shoulder. “Fine,” I say. “You win. I believe in the magic of the blanket fort.”
“I knew you would!” Simon smiles. “You’re a romantic at heart, Basilton.”
I roll my eyes at him, but press a kiss to his cheek. “What chocolate were you trying to woo me with earlier?”
“Oh nevermind that,” Simon says. “We’re saving the rest for Mordelia.”
“The rest?” I raise my eyebrows.
Simon’s cheeks flush.
“He ate a lot,” a voice in the doorway answers.
We both jump. Mordelia snuck up on us like the little spy she is.
Her eyes look from me to Simon, then back to me. “You two are gross. I’m going to the teddy bear room.”
“She’s a great kid,” Simon says, his voice low.
“Only for you. She’s fascinated by you.” I’m surprised at how soft my voice has gotten.
Simon nods. “I’m quite special.”
“Mm.” I kiss the triangle of moles on his neck.
Simon smiles, bending down to kiss me. I hate to admit it, but this whole thing is perfect. The blankets make this place really comfortable, and I’m sitting next to my favorite heater. I smile into the kiss, which just makes Simon lean in deeper.
“I love this pillow fort thing, but where are we going to sleep tonight?” I ask when we pull apart.
“Don’t worry, there’s a tunnel that leads to the bed,” Simon says absentmindedly, his hands running through my hair. “Also, it’s a blanket fort, dear.”
“Is Mordelia sleeping in here tonight?”
Simon laughs, moving to see me better. “Oh, yeah. She built herself a little room and is planning on sleeping on cushions.”
“Little devil,” I mutter.
“I heard that!” Mordelia shouts from the teddy bear room.
“We didn’t have the budget for sound-proofing the place,” Simon says sheepishly.
I scoff. “She just proved my point.”
“I think what I have to show you will make you forget about Mordelia,” he smiles.
I follow him further into the maze of blankets. We pass the entrance to the bed (hallelujah!) and a library, Simon narrating all the way.
“Here we are!” Simon announces, “The music wing!”
My record player is set carefully atop a table, tiny fairy lights wrapped around it. This room has more cushions than any of the others so far. It feels like laying on a cloud. I settle in as Simon puts on music.
A wave of calm washes over me, and I close my eyes to soak it in.
It's that time of year When the world falls in love Every song you hear seems to say Merry Christmas
I love “The Christmas Waltz,” which is a secret I keep locked deep in my heart. I realize that I may have mentioned it to Simon once, against my better judgement.
“Who’s singing this?” I ask as Simon lays down next to me. He flops down on his stomach, propping himself up with his arms.
“She & Him,” he explains. “It’s one of Mordelia’s records.”
“Of course,” I laugh.
Apparently already tired of holding himself up, Simon moves over to rest his head on my chest, wrapping his arms around me. Even his tail curls around my ankle. I sigh, content.
We stay like that for what feels like forever, just listening. I’m surprised at how much I enjoy this version. I’m warm and happy, and my heart is full of love.
“I’m happy you came this year,” I breathe.
“Me too.”

An older ask had asked you how you would rewrite return to zombie island. How would you rewrite scoob?
Oh I’ve already put some thought into this while I was actually watching the movie simply because I was thirty minutes in and didn’t see it getting better.
The first change I would make is that I would get rid of the whole beginning scenes with them as kids. We didn’t need it and it literally added nothing to the story. You can convince your audience that the characters are close without needing to completely illustrate why.
I would definitely open the film up with them probably in mid-chase at the climax of a mystery because that’s just how you need to open up a Scooby movie. Right from the beginning this is where I would introduce the character conflict. Maybe after they’ve caught the guy and the police are commending them they wouldn’t really have anything to say to Shag and Scoob (who are probably disheveled and starving from running for their lives once again). Shaggy and Scooby have never felt bad about being cowards so I doubt this would really hurt them that much (maybe annoy them at the most). But it identifies where the story is going to focus.
We’d then move into some transitional scenes where you can watch how the gang’s dynamic works and this is where you sell their friendship. This ain’t just a Scooby and Shaggy movie, this is a whole gang movie (the central conflict just stems from Shaggy feeling under appreciated). So their relationships are an important part of getting the audience to care what happens. I would say you subtly show how Shaggy might break up little arguments or remind them to eat. Nothing in your face, more or less it would be weaved in with the gang’s standard banter.
Then we’d get to the gang talking about turning MI into a legitimate business by finding investors and stuff. I think this would be a good opportunity for a montage scene where we get to see a lot of other Scooby/HB characters without it taking too much out of the story (this is where I would show the Blue Falcon and Dyno Mutt). All of them seem to reject the proposition though. I didn’t have major issues with Simon Cowell because random celebrity cameos have always been a Scooby thing but I mean.... Why Simon Cowell of all people? I feel like there are way more suitable celebs to choose from. I feel like it would be funny if they brought in one of the actors from the 2002 live action film (playing themselves) and everyone is just like: “Who the heck is this?” And then Shaggy (who always knows who everyone is) just goes: “Um??? You uncultured swine??? That is obviously Linda Cardellini!” And then she’s the one who is finally willing to invest but says she’ll only do it if Shag is out (Scooby can stay because animal mascots are in and it doesn’t get anymore in than a talking Great Dane).
And the gang gets all offended at this and Linda (it doesn’t have to be Linda but for all intents and purposes I’m just saying it is) will just be like, “Fine, I’ll give you my money if you can tell me what he does for you. For your team.”
And they’ll all stay silent, trying to think of something and that’s when Shaggy finally takes it personally. It’s one thing to be judged by people he hardly knows. But for his best friends to be given like the easiest ultimatum and they can’t even deliver on it? He wonders if he’s being taken for granted. He decides he is and explodes. Shaggy never explodes so it freaks the gang out.
I think he’d call them out for not considering his constant submission into being the bait as a contribution - despite the fact that he always states that he’ll never do it again. But of course they wouldn’t count that because they’re always too focused in on the details to miss the big picture in front of them. Because, ultimately, that is what Shag adds to the team. Daphne, Fred, and Velma tend to get so wrapped up in the small factors that they sometimes miss the obvious. And that’s when Shaggy will point out the big thing that they’re missing. Shag has always been big picture over nuts and bolts so of course he’s the one to bring up the primary detail missed. This has been an element in almost every single show so I feel like it’s funny that it’s never been spelled out.
Velma is a little hot-head who doesn’t love being demoralized by anyone so she might say something uncalled for and that’s when Shaggy walks out and Scoob follows suit. That’s a pretty major conflict to take up the runtime so there you go.
Shag and Scoob being pissed at the gang makes a little more sense now and can be further elaborated and expand into Shag’s self-confidence issues. It’s at this point that the two of them can get kidnapped by an unrevealed villain because why the heck would I take the mystery out of it?
It wouldn’t be by a group of semi-sentient robots because this the 70′s or 80′s and technology wouldn’t be that advanced. Instead, I’d shoot for classic, masked henchmen (maybe disguised as horrifying Greek gods or something) who swipe Shag and Scoob from the bowling alley without even giving them a chance at a comedic chase scene because the audience is supposed to feel unnerved.
We’d cut back to the gang, 1/3 of them a little steamed and the majority feeling bad for selling their best friend short. It’s revealed that they didn’t take the investment offer because there’s no way they would further exclude Shaggy from anything. They decide that they should let everyone cool down before they go and talk things out and while that’s happening Daphne is trying put together a list of all the things Shag and Scoob add to the team. She gets even more upset with herself because this is their best friend and this shouldn’t be that hard.
In the background, Fred and Velma start arguing and it would act as a kind of callback to the beginning where we see Shag break up their bickering. But since he’s not here the fight begins to escalate and it’s only when they start yelling that Daphne comes between them. Then her face lights up and she gingerly adds that to the list.
As the movies cuts back and forth between Shag and Scoob’s perspective and the gang’s perspective the list gets longer.
Speaking of, Shag and Scoob are being kept prisoner at the abandoned carnival because that’s always an interesting set-piece that just so happened to be totally pointless in the actual movie. At some point the two of them are split up and this is when it’s hinted that the kidnappers where originally aiming for just Scooby but Shag was also there so they just rolled with it. But because Shaggy isn’t important to them, nobody is really guarding him anymore (they were originally guarding him because Scooby was with him).
Scooby being taken is the motivation he needs to try and escape and save his dog (in his head he’s pretty sure these whackos are gonna freaking sacrifice his dog to the powerful god of all things creepy). His escape attempts would be interspersed between scenes of the gang looking for him, and Scooby being intimidated by the masked big bad (who is of course explaining the plan in great detail). The gang’s hunt for their guys would be a lot more difficult since they can’t just Life 360 up where he is. It would rely more on visual clues, eyewitness testimonies and choppy security footage, which is overall more engaging and gives the gang an actual thing to do.
While Shaggy is formulating an escape he’s able to pick up bits and pieces of what the crazy people want to do with Scooby and this acts as him getting closer to finishing a puzzle. But he doesn’t analyze the puzzle pieces he gets and tries to guess what the puzzle will look like, that’s not his area or his goal at the moment.
In a big triumphant moment, Shaggy escaping and the gang figuring out where he is happen at the same time. This gets the spirits high before things go wrong again.
And when I say wrong - I mean the gang get capture by the villain. Shaggy isn’t aware of this as he’s sneaking around the carnival grounds trying to figure out where someone would keep the actually important prisoner. I feel like a comically large circus tent would be a cool location for the climax of a movie Scooby’s probably in there. But when Shag gets there he’s quick to hide (like under the seats or something) and this is how he’s able to finally see the whole puzzle put together.
The gang escapes rather quickly because say what you will about Danger Prone Daphne but she’s just as good at getting out of tough situations as she is at getting into them. And so begins the epic journey to find their boys (they escape and Velma just instantly goes, “It’s obviously the huge circus tent.”). And at this point it’s like a One Piece arc and all you want is the whole gang to be reunited again. But first we need a fun scene of the VFD trio trying to evade the henchmen to like a Smash Mouth song or something because remember this is Scooby-Doo.
Shaggy realizes he has to do something fast otherwise his dog is going to be used to open the Underworld. He runs out of the shadows without any real plan with just the goal of taking down the bad guy. But he doesn’t get there in time and the whole tent like erupts into green and blue flames as Cerberus stomps out of the gates and Shaggy is just frozen in place. The masked guy seems a tad surprised to run into Cerberus so fast but is quick to gain control of the beast. He orders the monster to start wreaking havoc on a nearby town something, he doesn’t care so long as he can enter the Underworld without distraction.
But before he can do that, he gets jumped by Shaggy who’s really only trying to keep him pinned down while he comes up with a step two. But Mr. Mask has some fight in him so it becomes this epic struggle between Shaggy, Scooby, and the bad guy while the place is still on fire and we have an epic orchestral score playing in the background.
Right when it seems like the villain has the upper hand, Daphne comes in and like roundhouse kicks him in the head, and he’s out cold. And before Shag and Scoob can react they’re dogpiled by the other three and it’s very heartwarming.
Fred eagerly ties the perp up and then we get our unmasking and it’s Scrappy-Doo!!! Just kidding that’d be stupid. I’m really not sure who would be the best surprise villain but if anyone has a good idea for one please let me know!
When the bad guy comes to, Velma starts shaking him to tell them how to get Cerberus back into the Underworld and how to close the gate. He reveals that all you need to do is whistle and he’ll go home (Cerberus is Hades’ domesticated puppy so obvi that would work). Maybe we get a gag where someone tries to whistle but it’s too hot in the tent for it to work and they’re like: “Does anyone have like some water?” And then Shaggy just rolls his eyes and whistles and boom, big angry puppy comes home.
Daphne smiles and says, “I’m gonna have to add that to the list.” And Shag is like, “Like, the list of what?” And she explains that the gang has been putting together a list of all the things he brings to the team and it makes him happy that they’re putting in the effort.
We cut back to Velma torturing the info out of our mask on how to close the gates and he just evilly laughs and only a dog or dog’s best friend can close the gate. But, unfortunately, the gate will take them back down to the Underworld. The gang just sits in shock because there is no better option there.
But without missing a beat, Scooby decides he’s gonna do it and runs for the lock. He’s about to put his paw on the thingy when Shaggy beats him to it and nobody even gets a second to process before he’s sucked in and the gate vanishes.
The whole gang run to the spot where the gate used to be and Daphne falls to her knees crying, Scooby is digging at the ground trying to get to the gate and Fred has to get him to stop.
“I never even got to give him the list...” And Daph pulls it out and just drops it on the ground. Velma is on the verge of tears as she adds, “I still owe him an apology. I owe him a lot of apologies...” And as Fred is comforting Scooby he says, “We all do...” The scene ends with the gang all hugging Scooby and the list bursts into flames and disappears.
Then we cut to Shag in the Underworld and he’s just leaning against the gate and crying because what else is he gonna do? “At least I was finally useful to them...” He thinks and slowly begins to walk around and is surprised to see that the Underworld is prettier than he expected.
“Thank my wife. She’s always looking for ways to brighten this place up so I don’t feel so miserable when she’s gone. “
Shag screams bloody murder and jumps like a ten feet before turning around and seeing a dude in a chiton. Surprise surprise, it’s Hades (Who can also be a celebrity cameo whatever). We get some nice banter before Hades holds up something and asks, “Is this yours?”
Shaggy looks down and sees that it’s a piece of paper, he shakes his head.
“Really? Because it mentions you an awful lot.”
Evidently it got snagged on the way down and ended up in Hades’ lap - he’s certain he wouldn’t have even noticed that Shaggy was there if it weren’t for that. And then Shag’s face lights up and he realizes it must be the list, as he reads it we cut to all of the times Daphne thought to write these down on their trip. Finally he believes that he’s useful to the team, that he is a valuable part of the gang.
Hades looks at him and just says, “How do they survive without you?”
And Shag just shrugs and goes, “Believe me, like, I have no idea.”
Hades smiles and replies, “Then you best not keep them waiting.” Before snapping his fingers and poofing Shaggy back home.
When he gets there, the gang are slowly making their way out of the tent so they don’t see him. So Shag takes the opportunity to say, “I read y’all’s list.” And everyone instantly makes a 180 turn with their eyes super wide and he continues, “You know I think you missed a few but it’s the thought that counts.” And then we get dogpile number two of the movie.
The final scene is the gang opening up Mystery Inc. and them asking Shag where the entertainment is and he’s just like, “I asked our surprise investors to put something together for us...” And then we get the Hex Girls performance we deserve and I can totally buy them investing in Mystery Inc. because they freaking love Shaggy and Scooby so.
We get an ending shot of the gang going off to solve their first monetized mystery (we could have like a soft instrumental version of the first theme song playing) and then we fade to the end credits where we get the What’s New Scooby-Doo theme.

The Thin Line Between Pretending and Actually Loving You - Chapter 7
Chapter 1 || Chapter 2 || Chapter 3 || Chapter 4 || Chapter 5 || Chapter 6 || Read on ao3
Summary: Simon and Baz have dinner with Baz's family on Christmas Eve.
Word Count: 2372
A/N: Thank you @carryonsimoncarryonbaz for inspiring me to write a nicer, more accepting Malcolm. He didn’t appear for long in this fic, but it was definitely different for me to write a Christmas dinner where he didn’t end up arguing with Baz.
Also, I got the “very close talking” thing from Psych. I've always wanted to use that in a fic.
***
Baz
Simon and I arrive at my parents’ home around noon on Christmas Eve. The big family dinner is planned for tonight, and tomorrow morning is for just my immediate family.
I lead Simon through the first level of my house, introducing him to aunts, uncles, cousins, and their various partners.
Fiona immediately demands our attention from her place on the couch next to her boyfriend, Nico. She starts firing off questions, demanding to know everything about how Simon and I met, and she only stops when I promise to tell her all of the details later. (Hopefully, we will have “broken up” by the time she expects me to make good on that promise.)
After that, we move on to Nico’s sister, Ebb, and her partner, Annie. While Annie is quietly polite, Ebb is a bit more boisterous but kind all the same, pulling Simon into a bone-crushing hug.
After a few cousins who are more interested in whatever is on their phones than meeting my new boyfriend, we end up next to Dev and Niall, who glance between our faces and clasped hands with unreadable expressions before offering Simon genial hellos.
It seems like they may finally be accepting that our relationship is real.
Simon has begun to look a little overwhelmed by the time we make our way to the kitchen, but he still manages to offer up a polite smile when I introduce him to my stepmother, Daphne.
“It is so nice to meet you,” she says to Simon, wiping her hands on a towel before holding one out for him to shake.
He takes her hand for a brief moment before letting his hand fall awkwardly back to his side.
“Nice to meet you, too,” he says quietly.
“Do you need any help in here?” I ask, dropping Simon’s hand and moving farther into kitchen.
“Oh, no. I’ve already finished most of the preparation, so I’m good here. Besides, you should go entertain your guest.”
I try not to blush as my brain supplies me with a few different ways that I could do just that, none of which would be very appropriate at this moment, in a house filled with my relatives.
Careful not to look at Simon, I nod before turning and leaving the kitchen, heading back towards my extended family members, who I would prefer to avoid.
None of my siblings have appeared yet since we walked into the house, so they must be off playing somewhere or hiding. I wish I was still young enough to disappear until dinner was ready. Unfortunately, being a grown up apparently means being forced to make polite conversation with people I don’t usually spend more than a few hours with a couple of times a year.
“Everyone is so nicely dressed,” Simon whispers, stepping closer to me and taking my hand in his again as we head back towards the living room. I have to take a slow breath and remind myself that this is just for show, that he’s holding my hand because he has to, not because he wants to. “I look underdressed in what I’m wearing.”
“You look fine to me,” I say, keeping my tone neutral. “But if you are really worried, I may have something in my old bedroom that you could wear.”
“You’re a bit taller than me. I’m not sure any of you clothes would fit me.”
“We can make it work.”
“Okay,” he shrugs.
Five minutes later, Simon is wearing my clothes, and I can’t take my eyes off of him. It’s a suit that I only ever wore once, but it looks way better on him than it ever could have on me.
 Simon
Baz has begun to act weird again. Ever since I stepped out of the bathroom wearing this suit, he hasn’t been able to take his eyes off of me for longer than a few seconds.
I keep waiting for him to tell me that’s something wrong with the way that I look, but he stays silent as we head back downstairs to join his family again.
I should have known when Baz picked me up wearing a stunning, dark green suit that I was underdressed, but I thought that maybe it was just a Baz thing. That was until I walked into mansion-sized home (of course, he grew up in a mansion; it makes so much sense) and everyone was wearing their nicest clothes. And while it’s not like I was wearing a t-shirt and jeans before, I still looked like I was just some guy he had picked up off the street on his way here. I looked completely out of place.
Baz’s suit is only a little long, and while I don’t usually care for wearing suits, it’s different when it’s Baz’s suit that I’m wearing. It obviously isn’t something that he wears anymore since it was still in the closet of his old bedroom, but something about it makes me feel special to be wearing it, like this is where I belong.
It's a ridiculous feeling. I’m only here to convince Baz’s friends that he’s not single. I don’t belong here, and I definitely don’t belong by Baz’s side. As soon as this whole charade is over, I’ll be cast to the side again, and I won’t matter to anyone in this house.
I knew that from the beginning, but it still hurts to think about, so I push that thought away and try to enjoy this afternoon with Baz’s family.
I spend the next hour sitting next to Baz on his couch while he makes pleasant conversation with some of his family members. The entire time, Baz holds my hand, his thumb rubbing idly over the back of hand, never letting go, not even when one of his sisters – Adelaide, I think – climbs into his lap, squealing about how someone (presumably one of their other siblings) is trying to catch her.
Then, it’s time for dinner in the formal dining room where two tables have been set up. The larger one has been set up for the “adults” while a smaller one is off to the side for the kids.
I wish that I could go join the kid’s tables. I’m sure that it would be a lot better than sitting awkwardly with all of these people that I don’t know and have no idea what to say to. Luckily, there is enough food to keep my mouth preoccupied with other things besides talking.
A few minutes into dinner, though, Baz’s father seems to suddenly notice my presence. I didn’t see him before when Baz was giving me a tour of the first floor, but there are plenty of places that he could have been hiding in this giant house.
“Baz,” he says, his voice loud and booming, but also kind-sounding. “I haven’t gotten the chance to meet your boyfriend yet.”
“Dad, this is Simon.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Simon,” his father says, smiling in my direction.
“You, too, sir,” I respond quietly.
“Call me Malcolm,” he says with a dismissive wave of his hand. “‘Sir’ is a little too formal for my taste.”[AH1]
When I imagined actually meeting Baz’s father, I always thought that he would be strict and someone who wouldn’t exactly be welcoming of his son’s new boyfriend. I had only seen him from afar while we were in college, and he looked just as dark and mysterious as Baz always has.
Now, as I sit just a few seats away from him, he pulls me into a pleasant conversation about how he met Baz’s stepmother, and I’m pretty sure that it’s his own way of saying that he’s okay with me and Baz being together. I even begin to relax after a while, feeling increasingly welcome in this place I’ll never be in again, by people I’ll never see again.
Even though I just met these people, I hate that I’ll have to part from them. I’ve never had a big family. (I never had a family at all.) And being welcomed so warmly by someone else’s family makes me realize just how much I’m missing.
Baz must sense the change in my mood because his hand finds my knee
“Are you alright?” He murmurs, just for me to hear.
I nod. “I’m fine.”
“Okay.” He smiles warmly at me before moving his hand back to his own lap, and I miss his touch.
It was stupid of me to offer to be his fake boyfriend when I had feelings for him. Now, I’m counting down the minutes until tonight is over so that we can go our separate ways, and I can go back to pretending like I don’t have feelings for him.
 Baz
I expected most of my family members to leave right after dinner was over, but they seem to have chosen to sit around and talk for another hour or two. After a while, I excuse me and Simon from the table, and we go off in search of my siblings.
“Want to go upstairs?” He asks, stepping closer to me once we are away from anyone who would care whether or not we’re acting like a couple. I don’t move away, though. I like having him this close to me.
“And do what?” I ask curiously.
“Just get away for a moment. Maybe make people think that we’re kissing or something.”
“Okay,” I say warily.
His hand slips into mine, and he starts leading me away even though he has no idea where he’s going.
I follow him up the stairs, not saying anything even though I’m dying to ask him what he has in mind. He turns right at the stairs, in the direction of my room, so I assume that that is where he is headed, but after a few more steps he stops and turns to me, a strange look in his eyes.
Then, he steps towards me, backing me up until I hit the wall. My heart begins to race in my chest. I didn’t think he was being serious about the kissing thing, but he keeps moving closer to me.
I freeze for a moment before I shift my weight start to lean forward to meet him. I’m not going to say no to kissing him. Even if it doesn’t mean anything to him.
“You know we’re not actually going to kiss, right?” He asks, looking amused.
“Yeah, of course.” I let go of his hand and lean against the wall, but then he relaxes his stance, leaning towards me until our lips are just a breath apart.
“I thought you said we weren’t going to kiss.” I’m not sure why I’m whispering. No one else is around. I doubt anyone even noticed that we disappeared.
“We’re not.”
“Then, what do you call this?”
He bumps his nose against mine before saying, “I call it very close talking.”[AH2]
“Hmm. That is interesting. I’ve never done this before.”
“Really?” He lifts a brow, and I blush, glad for the darkness.
“Have you?”
“Nope. Just you. But if anyone walks by, it will look like we’re kissing.”
“Maybe we should make it look more convincing.”
“How?” He actually looks interested.
Without saying anything, I wrap my arms around him and pull his body closer, one hand settling on his lower back, the other drifting lower, stopping just before I reach his waistband.
He looks surprised at first, but then he smiles. He slots one of his legs between mine and lift a hand to cup my jaw, and when he touches me, I jerk slightly, and my lips brush his for the briefest of moments. I freeze and force myself not to react and not to push him away. Luckily, he doesn’t say anything about it. He must not care. But I’m not sure whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing.
We stand like that for a few minutes, not saying anything, just staring into each other’s eyes, our lips mere centimeters away. All I would have to do is tilt my head down a bit, and we would be kissing.
But I don’t do that. Because this isn’t real, and Simon doesn’t want to kiss me. I have to remind myself about that until he finally steps back, saying that we’re probably good now.
Nobody came by, and I’m actually relieved about that. That moment felt way more intimate than simply kissing would have, and I’m glad that no one bared witness to it.
This is starting to become too much. It’s getting harder and harder to fight the urge to pull him to me and pour out my feelings for him.
I need this all to be over. It’s easier to hide my feelings for him when I’m not being forced to be so close to him.
By the time most of my family has finally left, I have a plan in mind for how Simon and I can be broken up by New Year’s. It begins the moment that we live this house, and the plan is to tell Simon all about it on the drive to his house, but then Daphne invites us to stay the night.
She says that there is no point in us leaving, just to make the drive back up in the morning. There’s plenty of room in the house for us.
I can see Simon hesitate, but then she mentions the breakfast she has planned for tomorrow, and I have no hope of making it out of this house until late tomorrow afternoon.
It will be fine, I tell myself.
This could actually work to my advantage. Without Dev and Niall here, Simon and I can act less like a couple. And I can plant the idea that our relationship isn’t as strong as it appears in my parent’s heads so that it won’t be too big of a surprise when I announce our breakup in a couple of days.
This will all be fine. I just need to let Simon know that he will finally be free of me in a couple of days. I am sure that he will be delighted to hear this.
[AH1]Thank you @carryonsimoncarryonbaz for inspiring me to write a nicer, more accepting Malcolm. He didn’t appear for long in this fic, but it was definitely different for me to write a Christmas dinner where he didn’t end up arguing with Baz.
[AH2]I got the “very close talking” thing from Psych.
