he cant stay for long at that moment in time, got a multiverse to save and all that

but the brief interaction opens doors to many opportunities in the future

hobie gets to hear about the brief reunion between you and gwen from her, after she went back to her own dimension before it was show time

he becomes very intrigued by you

Do you take requests?

No, but I do take suggestions! The main difference is that I can pick and choose between suggestions for ideas that I like and want to draw from, you're welcome to send in suggestions whenever! Can you draw my OC/AU?

As much as I love everyone's OC’s and AU’s, I cannot draw for everyone, and to be honest I am a lot less likely to draw someone's OC/AU if I’m requested. Don’t take it personally, I have a weird thing where I would much rather gift someone art rather than be asked to draw it for them, it makes it feel like my idea and therefore I’m more passionate about doing it for them! It’s why I don’t request people directly to draw anything for me. Again everyone's ideas are amazing and I love seeing how creative people are. It's just that I'd much rather gift people art of their OC/AU than be requested to draw it, I will draw things for people when I have the motivation to do so!

Why do you tag some of your art as suggestive?

Just to be safe, I know I draw “sus” stuff sometimes and I mainly want to make sure people keep themselves safe when viewing my stuff. My blog will never explicitly post anything NSFW, the suggestive tag on my art is mainly for sex jokes, pinup style clothing/posing or ass. Again it is just to be safe, you’re not obliged to reblogs with the same tag as me, it’s just to make sure people don’t see something they don’t want to.

Who are the recurring characters that keep showing up here?

Oh, you mean my children? Let me give a rundown:

Mango (He/They) - Mango is my sona! I use him all the time for answering things and also just in general. He is part Dr Mario and part MLP pony from another dimension that somehow got sucked into the SMG4 universe. He works as a doctor in the SMG4 universe, he’s a bit cynical at times but he’s still a kind and caring guy, he’s just sick and tired of all the BS that happens in the SMG4 universe.

Smug (He/Him) - Smug was originally a weird bootleg SMG3 plushie that got turned into a human somehow, he is still a plushie just much bigger now. He spends all his time scamming people in various ways to get what he wants out of them and has no care or regard for them. He has a friend/partner who’s a bootleg SMG4 plush, however she wasn’t transformed as much as him and therefore is the same as before, she can just move and talk now.

Telly (They/Them) - Telly is a happy little accident that somehow occurred out of nowhere, they are the child of Mr Puzzles! They are a shy yet friendly little child who just wants to make friends and watch TV. They struggle with meeting people due to their speaker not working as they can only make static noises to communicate, but they are adventurous and always looking to have fun! They love and look up to their father a lot, he's their biggest inspiration.

Do you have any AU’s?

Yes! I have a werewolf SMG4 AU! I need to work on it. Werewolf SMG4 is a version of SMG4 who's been cursed to turn into an out of control werewolf every night, his friends are constantly working to try and find a solution to this curse while 4 is busy trying not to get anyone killed. It's very angsty and sad I promise, one day I will work on it more, you are welcome to ask about it whenever! It might motivate me to work on it more lol.

What do you think Matty would be like in very early stage of relationship like before you make it official ?

Oh my gosh, I hadn’t really thought about this before. But….hmmm. Off the top of my head?

I think he would be very shy and soft. Like, he would be blushing every time you paid him a compliment or attempted to flirt or something. And would look at you with admiration and awe and be like “you really think so?” Or “really?” Like he can’t believe you like something about him.

After hanging out / going on,like, your second or third date, as he’s dropping you off/ walking you home he would be like “May I call you tomorrow? What time works best for you?”

He would text you later to tell you what a good time he had. When he does call, as promised, after the initial pleasantries and asking about your day, he would just be like “when can I see you again?” And you’d collaborate on planning the next date.

He will remember tiny details about things you like, things you’ve told him about yourself, important dates coming up for you. Like, maybe you mentioned growing up near a farm and liking ducks or something, so he gets you a toy duck the next time he sees you. Or you casually mentioned not being able to stay up late one evening cuz you had an important thing at work. You’ll wake up to a text from him wishing you luck on the work thing.

He’ll still be bold and hot about it though. Like he will look you dead in the eyes and say that he “can’t stop thinking about you.”

He’ll hold your hand when walking through crowded spaces.

He’ll fuss over every detail of his clothes or his hairstyle and change a million times and try out a different way of doing his hair and scrutinize everything about himself before the date, but when he shows up in his leather jacket and his jeans and bold shoes, he walks in with such confidence that it never occurs to you that this same man just spent the past 3 hours debating whether or not funny graphic tees from vintage stores were date appropriate.

He asks permission before touching you, if you’re at the kissing stage, he also asks for verbal consent before doing it cuz he doesn’t think you’re at a stage where just kissing you randomly is okay.

He asks really invested questions about your family, your best friend, pet, or anyone/anything that you’ve made clear is significant to you, and remembers the info. “Did your sister get that promotion she was stressed about?” “How’s your dad’s new golf hobby?” “Have your friend and her husband settled on a name for the baby yet? Aww that’s so cute!”

He’d willingly share his favorite books, authors, artists, music, etc with you and want to know your take on them if you also enjoy them/ know of them.

He’d get really heated about socio-political issues that he cares about and then apologize about it. “Not trying to be woke or whatever. That’s boring. You don’t want me explaining the world to you, right?” Lmao.

He’d tell you stories about the guys and smile to himself when you say stuff like “Adam…he’s the one with the baby, yeah? The dad?” “Ross is the bassist with the perfect smile and the perfect hair.” He’s Matty though so he’d be like “what am I then?”

“The short one.”

He’d lend you his jacket when going for a walk but also undermine the gesture by pointing out how cliche it is.

Mid-hang out, and for absolutely no reason, he’d tell you that he’s having the best time with you.

He’d smile to himself every time you text him or any time that he says your name out loud and the boys would tease him so much about it. “What can I say, I think I really like her…” he’d blush.

Oh so @osatokun asked about my Balor/vampire pairing. I’ll write it out so I don’t forget, and later after I’ve talked to the artist and gotten permission, I’ll share the art I have of them because they’re super cute.

So I made this ghoul, Tansy. She’s the most vanilla mortal I can make as a base, + Auspex and Potence at one. So she’s a little bit strong, and has heightened senses. She’s shy, she’s socially awkward, she’s addicted to her noise cancelling headphones and true crime podcasts. Her motivation is to find her sister, who has been missing for a few years, and her case is cold and she has no new leads. Her domitor, Gerhart, is this super old extra sexy handsome and charming guy, and he promised her he’d help her find her sister, but first he has to train her to be not shy and dress sexy and learn how to tango. This absolutely terrifies her but she’s a ghoul and has no choice. He’s also a Tremere so she is like… the absolute lowest peon in the vampire hierarchy, addicted to pleasing a man who’s only interested in shaping her to what he wants her to be.

And then his player gets booted from the game for being a sex pest. Oops!

The ST scripts his death so he dies trying to get knowledge from a Gangrel Elder swamp witch. Before he undergoes her trials, he makes her promise that if he dies, she will take Tansy as her ghoul. The session before he’s booted I make jokes about how Tansy will be way happier as the Swamp Witch’s ghoul. He fires back that she probably doesn’t have electricity or wifi and I let him know that he’s deeply underestimating the appeal of living as a bog witch.

So the ST asks me if I’m cool with being her ghoul and I say sure! I’m always up for a traumatic turn of events. The Tremere Alastor (vampire police) drags her out to the bog to find her domitor’s remains, and the forest witch tells them that Tansy belongs to her now, actually, and if they want the remains, they’re down at the bottom of the well. The Tremere makes her go down the well by herself and gather the remains and his belongings.

That’s when she meets her first fae.

She meets a wichtel (a German digger fae) and she promises to pay him in pomegranates if he lets her live and helps her escape the well. He agrees, and he shows her two doors. I’m aware of other people trying the two doors before - the wooden door is always locked, the metal door leads back to the city. Tansy tries the wooden door first, it’s still locked.

So she knocks.

It opens to a trod (not that she knows what a trod is), and she enters the dreaming for the first time. Alone, she follows the silver path into a dark and shadowy forest, where something is watching her. She tries making friends and small talk, but nobody talks to her. She follows the path to a lake, but before she goes, she writes a thank you not to the shadows, and then heads into the lake, emerging on the shore by the city bridge.

She returns all of her domitor’s things to the chantry, and they walk her out with her little cardboard box of belongings and she goes to live in the bog. She’s out there a night or two when she runs into another vampire. A huge vampire. A big, scary, intimidating punk named Nails. But he doesn’t know she’s a ghoul, and she doesn’t know he’s a vampire. But she’s in her master’s territory, so she’s safe to a degree. She warns him off, and tells him that she’s looking for her sister. He offers to help her, and she doesn’t trust him, but agrees to meet him later.

There are many adventures they go on. She figures out he’s a vampire when he rescues her from being kidnapped by a spider monster and takes her out to eat, but doesn’t eat anything. She tells him he can kiss her, but he refuses until he can show her his face - he’s a Nosferatu! But she sees him and kisses him anyway, because he’s her hero and the only man who’s ever really shown up for her.

They fall in love! She keeps going down into the well and meets dragons and chimera and monsters that try to eat her. She’s strangely not scared about this, even though she’s scared of everything else. He takes her to cover up a masquerade breech, and while she’s there, she discovers a way to open a little portal to the dreaming where she talks to a captive duchess. While she’s talking to her, she hears the voice of her sister. Tansy tries jumping into the portal but Nails stops her.

Eventually they find her sister, who is now a Boggan. Her sister recruits her to trying to free the Duchess, and Tansy gets more and more involved in the fae world and more and more fae things keeps happening to her.

Eventually she finds out she has the soul of a long lost Balor princess in her, and thus begins the struggle of learning more about Princess Tanwen and her past, and keeping her asleep so she doesn’t have to give up her beloved Nosferatu husband. Her fae parents find her - her mother heals her with blood magic and she gains the Balor flaw of scales on her skin. She rescues her father’s heart and convinces him to free the duchess.

She discovers an evil duke has been manipulating fate to keep her story in line with the way he wants it to go. She discovers he had her husband embraced on purpose because he has the fae soul of her one true love. She’s been frantically searching for a way to restore him and bring back the soul of her fae love while keeping her own fae soul asleep — and she’s getting very close to figuring out how.

I don’t know Viv and I never have.

I watched her YEARS ago back on deviantART when she was Vivzmind. I really loved her art and I still do. The few times I ever interacted with Viv, when I commented on her shizz, I remember her being fun, casual, and nice. True, maybe I don't know the "real her", whoever that is, but I have few if any qualms with Viv on a personal level. Judging every single artist who makes creative decisions you disagree with by John K standards is fucking hyperbole. I don't hate her.

What I HAVE always hated, and the thing that eventually drove me to quietly stop following Viv in 2013, are her fans....

There were two kinds of Vivzmind groupies back in the day, 1) the majority, aka ppl like me, and 2) this one very specific kind of Vivz-stan. While the basic majority of fans (me) were as lovebombing and prone to hype as anyone would be about the artist they admire, the people who were REALLY rabid for Viv's attention (stans) felt possessive. They felt hostile. Like, imagine you say outloud that you like the popular kid at school cuz everyone does and there'd be a weird false friend of theirs listening in, constantly @ing you with "yeah, well I like her MORE" or coming to their defense on perceived slights against her. I'm sure a lot of it was based in just social ineptitude and not anything too serious, but again it was beyond what was usual for popular DA artists.

When people say “Viv can not take criticism”, what they really mean is these fans could not take criticism.

I know all I have to go on is heresay given that much of her gallery and old work is gone but here's what I remember:

>>If you were a newbie follower and you accidentally did something Viv vocally didn't like, you'd pay for it. If you were like me and said once Viv’s art reminded you of neopets, Viv herself would say nothing but these fans would tear you to shreds for daring to not know Viv’s comfort zone. >>If you were asking for context on what was happening in one of her pics with characters you didn’t know, fans would inform you in a passive aggressive manner. "HOW DARE you not remember! Viv posted it, ugh yer so annoying, Felicia"

>> One thing Viv def did not like was people “stealing” her artstyle - not tracing or using her art w/o permission, just very clearly being inspired by her in making their own characters or pictures. She hated that. I get how, when you’re JUST a popular artist on the site it can seem annoying, like someone’s Patrick-Star-ing your every move while acting like they don’t know you...that's rough, trust me, but it’s STILL not the same as art theft-! Even so, Viv complained and would post journals about artists “stealing” her style. One time she happened to do this to an artist I did art trades with. Because of Viv's 'endorsement', he left dA forever. His profile was bombarded by passive-aggressive to just straight up mean Vivstans dogpiling him about how he "needed to give Viv credit". One of the few times I talked to Viv it was to say "hey I know you’re mad, but this guy’s kind of my friend", to which she said to me "tell you friend that it’s wrong and not okay to do this." So I did. He told me he more than knew by that point and was off the site within the week. This was long before I just fell out of interest and stopped watching her, but it always left a bad taste in my mouth that I did that. That's the thing: there's no big-style discourse, just a lot of little microaggressions that'd build up and wear you down.

Ppl often characterize "white knights" as being directed by their beloved artist to do the deed, but, as far as I know, Viv has never been the "DEFEND MY HONOR"-type. Viv never seemed to talk to these uber fans AT ALL; she was far more abt chit chatting with her friends and casual viewers. The vibe I always got wasn’t that Viv weaponized her worst fans’ behavior, it’s that she ignored them and also ignored how they may have hurt the rest of us. On paper nothing about Viv saying “ya’ll, I’m tired of these specific comments abt my work; copycats; non criticisms being dished,” is wrong. It’s that her underground stan-base would be the ones to pounce on you for it, for whatever reason I don't know. Maybe it was some kind of bid for Viv’s approval or maybe it was just cuz they felt better doing it; THAT is what you feared. So, when Viv did the bare minimum of get peeved at someone or something, it was a circumstance that meant nothing if it’d happen to any other artist but it would hurt because there was her initial judgment, and then there was her followers' judgment. This is important because while I think this exact attitude/relationship has changed, like hell do I think it’s gotten better...

~~~Part 2~~~The Spindlehorse chain of command, aka Vivziepop now

Now that Viv's the auteur creator of a beloved Indie series, I fully believe Viv's base has matured into a DIFFERENT breed of toxic. I’m always stressing this because it couldn’t be stressed enough: Hazbin Hotel is a preemptive fandom: It was made with the help of numerous internet famous animators collabing with an already devotedly popular creator at the helm; it was promised and hyped and kept up as a fandom before there was ever even a product (the pilot) out, and way before it was properly picked up in 2020; because so many internet people were working on it, it was a darling to many the animation/art scene on youtube+ people had a deep attachment to it; the fans have almost direct access/ability to talk to the showrunners directly and vice/versa, so the fans feel very ‘in’ on the show in a way other budding cartoon fandoms couldn’t really say. All these elements mean that Hazbin+Helluva are made with a great deal of love, devotion, and earnestness to them. It’s a very passionate, very close-knit community and just so we're clear, there's nothing wrong with that.

It just also means that the creator and the fans do not have great boundaries with each other and I think may be a little blindsided by the joy of creation. Where back in the day the 'old verse-same-as-the-first' would be Viv'd have a tiff w someone and that someone w be bombarded by basement stans, now there’s a different kind of vicious circle at play:

when the HH/HB fan communities hear rumors of “a critic” or “a bully” (usually just negative reviews /redesigns/fan theories that contradict what the creator wants) there’s a real threat of that 'critique' working it’s way up the chain of command TO the creators themselves. And by 'critique', I mean the real words and intent being taken out of context or twisted to fit the stans' pov. (ex: "Stolitz is a bad ship and Stella is a wasted villain" get's telephoned into "I hate that these characters are gay; I want Stolas to go back to his abuser")

The creators have no incentive of their own to comment on this bs. They're busy. BUT, because they are just as much the makers of as they are fans of their own show they feel the need to comment on any controversy they hear because they don’t want things getting out of hand. On paper, understandable; But in practice-

-the Spindlehorse crew don’t really know the context of the situation. They take it on good faith that their fans aren’t misrepresenting things to them, to which they then say nothing to stop people from being harassed, OR-

-they casually dish out their own comments in response to a situation they’re not actually a part of.

In 2018 Frootrollup1, a then-underage fan, drew redesigns of the cast of Hazbin because she draws redesigned versions of all of her fandoms → some fans saw her art as mocking/attacking Viv because assholes have done their own redesigns of Hazbin to spite Viv in the past → these same fans took their complaints to Twitter where a bunch of people, including Viv, all dunked on Frootrollup for being another “hater”...and only backed off when they learned her age and that it wasn’t a pic drawn in spite. "Oops." Frootrollup WAS a fan of Hazbin. She’s not anymore because people took her art out of context, had their own kneejerk reactions to it, and embarrassed her in front of the creator directly, who took these people’s sides. This isn’t an isolated incident and it keeps happening because the crew doesn’t discourage fans from reacting or asking for their input on crap that shouldn’t involve them. 

“Lots of fanbases have shitty fans” is not the point here. Hazbin/Helluva are a unique case. Yes all fandoms kinda suck, technically, and any case where you have the creators reacting to fans is gonna get parasocial. My point is that Spindlehorse is waaay to accustomed to their fandom as fans themselves and not outside viewers.

Remember back in 2015, when that one Steven Universe fan was being bombarded for her problematic art when it was really just a glorified hate campaign by some of her ex friends wanting to bad mouth her to the fandom?; and then IT WORKED? Imagine now that one of the people running the hate campaign on her had taken the 'evidence' to the Crewniverse directly, and Rebecca Sugar herself was like “wow, what a bigot!”- adding to the dogpile of hate that almost got that fanartist to kill herself??? Scary hypothetical, I know, but that's what scares me about this. If that isn’t already happening already, with a bunch of critical fans and redesign-artists going silent out of fear of the Vivbase, then it’s at a real threat of becoming a reality. 

-----brief aside, we gotta mention Tapatalk and why they're awful and you shouldn't dismiss them/accidentally condone them----

Complicating matters more is the BadWebcomicsWiki. While not KiwiFarms or 4chan, the wiki forums had the same problem of being made exclusively for bitching and moaning at webcomics ppl didn’t like (many of which were bad, but it's just as likely that should a webcomic DARE to be liberal or furry or lgbt themed it was suspiciously torn apart by people all too eager to note said things..). That is what the wiki and forum were made for. That is what they were always made for. Do not @ me abt how it was 'good once' or people had good intentions and didn't wanna use it for hate. I know, I'm getting to that ->

In 2015 When Zoophobia got a thread and later an article there, a bunch of randos from outside joined the forums simply because it was one of the first and only times where former Viv fans could congregate + explain all the details to the newbies+ talk about the bullying and microaggressions Viv’s base did that hurt them and how she did nothing to stop it; i.e. people started to use the shittybitch forums for genuine talk about the comic and criticism.

((never had, nor do I want a BWW account, but I used to check in every day back in 2015 for updates on one webcomic I hated before wising up and realizing the site was run by centrist chudheads. This is how I found out abt the Zoophobia discourse at the time))

The problem being that, when you go to a forum for any kind of dissenting opinion to be made, ANY KIND of dissenting opinion WILL BE made. It doesn’t matter if some ppl meant nothing wrong and just wanted a place to shoot the shit about how bad Viv’s stans were. A "bad-media-is-bad-lemme hate on it cuz I'm cool"-based wikiANYTHING is going to lead to truly bad behavior. That moment came for the ZPBWW forums when one user showed up posting graphic art of Angel Dust raping Viv’s severed head as a joke. If I remember right, and it's prolly still on their forum now, other users on the forum were mad that he did that, but it doesn't really matter. Viv HAD/HAS ALL the right to disassociate w that forum regardless of what, how, or why anyone else used it for. That’s what you do when your understanding of a website is-“oh, that place where people hate on every little thing I do including the guy who mailed me art of myself getting raped?”. And that’s before we even get to LincarRox/theToyTaker drama and how he scoured the BWW forums once he was kicked off the normal Hazbin fan scene for stalking/harassing Viv. 

The Vivstans know this harassment against her exists. They don’t understand the real depth of it, but they know it’s there. What they do is use that harassment’s existence to justify their own dogpiling. 

The most egregious part is, given how big the Spindlehorse fandom is, it’s not very hard at all for other fans- big name or indie creators, to be misinformed and believe only the stans’ versions of events without question → which adds even more stigma because if in this ‘cancel/DNI’-obssessed microculture we got on Twitter and Tumblr. People aren’t questioning or really knowing the situation any more than Viv does. Except, these people are just fans, not the showrunners, and should be more open to hearing (legit) criticism. They’re not and that’s leading to a lot of the regular fanbase to I think develop tunnel-vision. As an outsider, I can't tell you for sure if any of Erin Frost's claims are 'valid' or legit. The most upsetting thing by far though is HOW FAST people were to call her a liar or act like her complaints at Spindlehorse are "nothing".

tl;dr I think two truths currently coexisting at the moment are

Viv has been harassed and treated horribly by people saying they’re “just being critical”. I 110% believe this woman when she says she ‘hates creeps’. I've seen first hand some of those creeps. I don't envy her.

Viv and the Spindlehorse crew have terrible boundaries and foresight into their fandom’s innerworkings and should NOT be commenting on them- because they exacerbate the issues within.

Viv’s base in uniquely unhealthy and overprotective. From the stanbase on the fringe, to the excitable but vulnerable fans that make up the whole, to the creators themselves who aren’t equipped to micromanage or even just manage all this drama. I see a bubble of pent up aggression seeping under the surface of the Helluva/Hazbinverse fanbase and I’m really scared when it pops. 

I have no idea what’s actually going on with the Spindlehorse folks or what’s in their hearts. I’m not interested in rumors, and I’m SO not interested in stupid petty AntiHazbin shit that perpetuates the hateflow (PK Russel, BWW, DaftPina I'm lookin at yoooo). I want to be a fan of Helluva and be excited for Hazbin. I want to take part in all this seeing as I did follow Viv and still do like her art and her general attitude about animation. It’s always cool when someone you followed casually makes it big- you want to support them! But, I’m also just naturally skeptical and sardonic and critical of things I like. So I’m in constant fear that overprotective stans are going to take my words and embarrass me in front of Viv and crew. And that? That WILL def make me hate Hazbin. No, still not enough to join your weirdo AntiHazbinnie tags or stalker threads, but it WILL make me hate it.

I don’t want that, none of you fans want that, and I know the creators don’t want that to be happening on a mass scale with people who're just skeptical of their show.

In comparing Helluvaverse to any other animated show's online fandom, there's no one to one, but consider how rabid and anticritical Steven Universe was- consider how dismissive and gatekeepy the Rick & Morty fandom is, consider how inconsiderate of creator's boundaries the Bronies were. Hazbin isn't out yet and if Helluva goes for all long as Viv and Brandon intend, it's also in it's infancy. We all have an opportunity to fix these problems before it begins- I say we do our part.

Hideyoshi: I do the bare minimum to avoid losing my title. Japanese folks love their titles, y’know, and the title of ‘Charismatic Historian Popular with the Youth’ is one I’d like to keep.

Keito: My favorite manga artist said something similar once. When you’re doing something you like, nothing feels like ‘hard work’.

Hideyoshi: That’s why it’d be like, a real problem if I was told to stay uninvolved with this ‘goldmine’ of a show.

Hideyoshi: So, hear me out.

Hideyoshi: Today, you guys are gonna make a version of ‘Rumbling Heaven and Earth’ without any of the ‘Three Sages.’

Hideyoshi: Then, you’ll do the same thing, but with a different variation.

Keito: What do you mean by that…?

Hideyoshi: I mean, like. You make a version of ‘Rumbling Heaven and Earth’ the way that I, Hideyoshi-sensei want to see it, and then you like, make a version of the show tailored to the way the other two proposed it, respectively.

Hideyoshi: Then we compare all the different versions and pick whichever is the most interesting.

Keito: So what you’re saying is that we should hold an audition of sorts?

Hideyoshi: Yup yup. Unlike history, or well, the past, the future is unpredictable, and we can never tell what’s going to happen 100%, no matter how hard we try.

Hideyoshi: You’ll never know for certain what the right choice is. That’s why preparation and rehearsal are so important.

Hideyoshi: If you screw up, there’s no recovering from that, right? It only makes sense to try and reduce the likelihood of that happening, even it’s only by a little bit.

Hideyoshi: It doesn’t matter how hard you think about things in your head. In reality, history is a tapestry woven both consciously and unconsciously by countless people.

Hideyoshi: You’ve gotta proooperly compare it with reality, y’know? That shitty old m— Ieyasu-sensei, I mean, and the other one might have a different opinion, though.

A Little Goncharov for Thanksgiving

I learned about Goncharov the way I learn about most memes and pop culture, from my teenagers. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, we had a group chat spring up on Discord that included two family friends who were going to be joining us for the holiday from out of town. One of the topics of conversation turned to Goncharov, the imaginary film around which an active Tumblr fan community had sprung up, as if it had been a real, little-known cult classic from 1973 made by Martin Scorsese. 

It became a fun creative exercise—in the middle of the day, one of the kids would send a question about Goncharov: “What do you think about the relationship between Katya and Sofia?” or “What did you make of the clock tower imagery?” or “Goncharov… iphone or android guy?” To which someone else would playfully answer. 

This same kind of thing was happening on a massive scale on Tumblr, where artists created movie posters and promotional materials, composers posted songs and soundtracks, people posted deleted scenes and script fragments. There are reviews and academic papers, fictitious Wikipedia and IMDb listings, and A LOT of fan art.

Lynda Carter posted a photo on her Tumblr with Henry Winkler that she captioned, “Me and ‘The Fonz’ at the premiere of Goncharov (1973) at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.”

Discussions popped up about the characters and who would play them in the reboot. Posts were shared hundreds, then thousands of times. A Goncharov (1973) Lore Google Doc and Discord server were created to help keep the content organized.

Our family’s fan-favorite character was Ice-Pick Joe, so I wrote “Musings on Ice-Pick Joe” in between chopping veggies for stuffing and waiting for the sweet potatoes to roast, complete with some AI-generated art. That was four days ago, and the post has been liked and shared more than I anticipated, and I keep thinking about why that is.

Conversations around Goncharov have continued, and I find myself wondering what it is about this moment in time and this type of activity that continues to capture so many people’s imagination and engagement?

Tumblr is a hub for public fandom culture and community in a way that the other social media platforms are not. It’s where you can find discourse and fanfiction/fanart for almost anything.

Still, this is a little different and on a much larger scale. At a time when people are looking for Twitter alternatives, with the stress and joy of holidays approaching, what is drawing so many people in?

We talked about this over Thanksgiving: the way Goncharov allowed people low-stakes permission to create, to play to their particular strengths, to connect with other people, to escape reality for a moment, to build a new community. We talked about the shortcomings and challenges we saw: power dynamics, issues of race, etc.

It’s an evolving experiment, and as such, it has been shaped by the many variables involved and course-corrected each time someone notices a gap or opportunity: What would a musical look like? What if some of the actors had gone on Sesame Street or the Muppet Show? What if Gonzo played Goncharov and Miss Piggy played Katya? What would the remake look like set in 1980s NYC? What recipes might be created for the Goncharov cookbook? (I remember how much fun we had making the Forking Good cookbook.) There really is no end to what people can come up with. I’m waiting to see if Goncharov gets a Tom Gauld comic or a mention on Saturday Night Live. 

It seems relevant that role-playing games, both online and tabletop, have recently increased in popularity. Dungeons and Dragons was the cornerstone of Stranger Things, and 50,000 people attended Gen Con (tabletop game convention) in 2022. It’s not my world, although I’ve watched the joy my kids take in it. My energy goes into writing, but I can absolutely appreciate the fun of playing together. 

As a writer, I walk around with worlds in my head, but I don’t get to share them until they get published. Something like Goncharov, which was not an intellectual property “owned” by anyone, gives people permission to imagine and play.

I think it speaks to a need we have an human beings to experience connection, joy, wonder, and hope. We've always had those needs. People have been gathering around fires or tables, telling stories, for thousands of years.

Today, the hearth may be a computer or a phone, but the desire is not that different. My November began with the publication of Mother Christmas, my graphic novel, the secret origin of the Santa Claus story which is rooted in the ancient Muses, whose gifts inspire humanity. One of the questions my story attempts to answer is: Where does inspiration come from?

If we look at Goncharov we can see that inspiration comes from so many places. So much is possible when people given themselves permission to play, to shrug off the inner critics and outer trolls, and to imagine for a moment a different world that they have a part in creating. That is such a powerful and compelling idea.

Stories remind us that we are not alone, that we share struggles, and that we can overcome obstacles. There are so many challenges in the world right now.

Maybe Goncharov is a lens through which people are seeing themselves and each other, reminding us how much fun it is to make-believe and how powerful it can be to have a shared image of the world.

The first step in creation is imagining. Exercising that muscle, allowing ourselves to play and tell stories and make art is a worthwhile one, and I think it's one that we need to survive.  The Goncharov phenomenon gives me hope, because if we can have this many people put their energy into creating a whole world around Goncharov, just imagine what else is possible?

hello i am thinking about ofmd.

queerness in piracy. the openness to the queer relationships aboard the revenge and the normalcy of it all. queer pda without judgement. without harassment. in fact, the opposite. queer pda with encouragement, joy, love, respect, excitement. further, the inclusion of people of color and of varying ethnic backgrounds. the respect and found family of the whole crew, without seeing differences in a time where differences were incredibly seen, present, and established as methods of othering.

no othering was done on board. the only othering was that of the people in power, those under the government’s watchful eye. or those who were nasty, cruel individuals who othered pirates, those who threw the first punch. and in those cases, dare i say, it is rightfully done.

i am not siding with pirates or with privateers, especially considering that this is a fictional show! and very clearly fiction, fun for being fun.

that said, ofmd brings an incredibly interesting reversal of good vs evil. the older i get, the more i begin to associate The Greater Beings with negativity and weakness, as they are in such high power places yet act so foolishly and with such little care. so yeah, the pirates winning is refreshing to me. it makes me happy.

it makes me happy to see people like me win. the outcasts, the queer, the ones who love more than they ever should and it comes to bite them. the ones who are cruel because they don’t know how to express softness. the ones who are unapologetically themselves, especially when they are objectively incredibly annoying and/or boring.

it makes me happy to see the character development, the small guy winning, the big guy losing.

is the show an accurate portrayal of piracy? fuck if i know! probably not! or maybe it is, and we have been victim to fearmongering anti piracy pro privateer propaganda since the golden age of piracy. i certainly do not have the qualifications to speak on the subject outside of my handful of facts that i randomly know, but i do have the qualifications as a queer person for the following:

it is refreshing to see so many queer couples on television. and, of those queer couples, they all are diverse. it isn’t a copy pasted mlm relationship, or a wlw relationship for shock and sex factor. it is a pompous man and his “lowlife” boyfriend, who help each other become the best versions of themselves, combining traits instead of replacing. it is an artist and a guy who just thinks art is cool. it is two traumatized people who lift each other up before anything else.

ofmd isn’t about historical accuracy, it is about bringing forth questions about the state of piracy as a criminal offense. were they as bad as everyone said? likely. were they loving and caring and soft like the show? unlikely! one thing that they both had in common is that they supplied a found family, one that is incomparable to other ways of living, as the crew becomes the only people you would know for long periods of time. ofmd is about finding yourself and loving others through it, forgiving yourself, and giving yourself the permission to change.

spend an unhealthy amount of time on a drawing, your limbs became numb during the creation of it, it's something you have wanted to draw for a year and you're very pleased with how it turned out, especially since you've been experimenting with colour lately and your skill is improving in that regard. nobody cares, because it's fan art of some mainstream characters being fags and it's awkward for them to spend even a moment in your twisted mind. you spend less than an hour scribbling animals in black and white. barely any details, not much thought was put into it. people immediately erupt into applause, offering you marriage proposals and doxxing you just so people could thank you in person for making such beautiful, meaningful and passionate art, some people even leaving huge sacks of money on your doorstep and running away because they want to get a big back tattoo of it but are too shy and daunted to ask for permission so they just brought a shitload of coins and paper monies to make up for it. you don't know what to do with your life so after months of losing artistic motivation from people's clear display of pathetic biases and a very underdeveloped artistic sensibility, you use the worthless mountains of money sacks to hire a hitman to kill you. you told them to make it long and slow and deliberate. when you meet in person you are so excited to die and be gone from this world, but they just stand there for a while being quiet, then let out a sigh and they finally say that they have been watching you for years and you just happened to come across their killing business, and they have been following your art all along, since the beginning, and they refuse to kill you because they respect you too much. you're stunned into speechlessness and just scoff in disbelief a little bit, not sure how to respond to such a compliment. they seem to have read your mind because they say to you, "hey, you don't have to say anything... how about we... go to dinner? is that weird? i don't know. but i have recently come into money (haha), and am feeling a bit generous on this very evening. would you feel so inclined as to partake in some supper? or perhaps dinner? you can say no if you want to. i care a lot about Consent and i really respect it if you don't Consent to eating dinner with little ol' me."

you Consent to eating dinner with them. at the table in a lowkey restaurant, they mention how cool they think it is that you had it/its pronouns listed in your social media bio and that they use exclusively he/him pronouns. you wish you should go back, option + command+ F your memories (find and replace for all you non-mac users in the audience), and replace all the times you thought of him as a "they". while you were lost in your thoughts, he had pulled an accordion file out of his coat and started pulling out pieces of cardstock. he looks at you expectantly, but not in a desperate way. which is awesome because all those other people who were "fans" of you were acting like starved wolves whenever you were confronted by them. you finally register what is on the pieces of cardstock. it is faithful recreations of dvd cover art. you look back up at him. and he shrugs. "i haven't showed this to anyone before in my life, but my secret passion is renting movies and then drawing the dvd cover art as accurately as possible. but i hide some little secrets in them. like in this one for so i married an axe murderer, i changed it so that mike myers' head is tilted back 16 degrees more than it is on the actual thing. watchya think?"

you feel kind of put off by him asking for your opinion, and much more so by his choice to spend so much time on something related to that movie. “i think your dedication to your craft is commendable,” you say. you hope he can’t tell that you’re being kind of dishonest. he nods and says, “thanks, man. oh! do you Consent to being called a man? i know you’re a guy, but the pronouns throw me off a bit and i don’t want to mess up anything.” you shrug. “i think your fixation on framing everything as an issue of consent is a bit disconcerting. it’s not that big of a deal. yes, i’m a man, i get called a man because i am a man. it’s quite simple.” you don’t know what caused you to get annoyed enough at him to have a bit of an outburst. you don’t have enough time to feel apologetic, though, because he pulls out a gun from his coat and holds it in front of your face. “do you still consent to dying, you piece of shit? what if i shoot you right in the face at this very moment? what then?” your brain is overloaded from so many questions in a row and you can only think to say, “hang on, let me think,” not being very aware of where the conversation is now. “would you mind repeating that?” you ask. “it’s just, i have adhd and whatever, and it causes me to have some issues following what people are saying.” he takes a deep breath and sets the gun down on the table in front of him. “yeah. yeah, sorry, i got ahead of myself. jesus.. listen, i’ve had a long day and this didn’t really go the way i thought it would, so. if you don’t mind. i just wanna go home. i’ll even refund you.”

you jolt up in your seat. “no way am i taking back any money. the familiar serial numbers on the bills would remind me too much of your inadequacy as a hitman, and i hate the stinking things anyway. money…. ugh .... god, why did the one fucking hitman i hired have to be you?”

he looks mournful, almost like a dog who has been yelled at. “listen, uh.. i’ll hire a hitman to off you with the money you gave me, alright? it’s the least i could do. i just need to know—does it have to be tonight? i’m not sure it could happen on such short notice, but i’ll try my best.” you look away from him to glance down at the gun on the table, and around the general vicinity of the restaurant. how does nobody notice or care? “yeah, it’s fine,” you say without giving it much consideration. “wouldn’t want to inconvenience you.”

a week later, you are sitting on a bench in the middle of a park. you’ve been going out in the open as often as possible, waiting for the hitman to kill you, providing endless opportunities for your murder. something across the fountain catches your eye. a familiar coat. it’s the hitman. the one you're acquainted with. he looks equally surprised to see you, and gives a little wave. you wave back. suddenly, a completely unrelated human being drops down from a tree branch overhead and tackles you on the bench. they are holding a knife and they stab expertly into your neck, killing you instantly.

🎤 Interview: B.A.P, “All six members each have different colors”

Rookie 6-member group B.A.P (Bang Yongguk 22 · ZELO 16 · Himchan 22 · Daehyun 19 · Youngjae 18 · Jongup 17). Debuted in 3 weeks and already gaining members on their Internet Fan-cafe for over 20,000, debuted with the song ‘Warrior’ which is already topping on various daily music charts. “The team was formed with a goal to conquer the earth. We want our music to reach all over the world”.

- Lately we heard you guys are becoming more popular. Did you realize?

“I don’t know. When we perform and saw our fans cheering, it makes us feel stronger. Leader Bang Yongguk hyung and ZELO had debuted earlier and it was very helpful for the rest of us. The members had to give their handphones during trainee days, I don’t know how to respond to that. There is almost no contact with the outside world.” (Daehyun)

- So the handphones were taken by the company.

“It’s not that. The members volunteered to to give them away. We dont really need handphones in practice room and the dorm except to call parent and members’ family only. The aim is to focus on practice and the members only have one handphone for later use but then lost it. We’ll borrow from manager-hyung if needed” (Yongguk)

- A little pre-debut story.

“Since middle school I play dae-gum (flute-like instrument)·Janggu (drum-like instrument)·ggwaeng-ga-ri etc as a major in traditional music. Then suddenly, I got into black music like hip hop and R&B. Naturally, I have the dream to be a singer and was street-casted and later was able to join the team.“ (Himchan)

“There was a talent show on my Middle School campus and I sang to SG Wannabe’s song. Standing on stage having friends shouting and cheering is overwhelming that I cant put into words. Since then, I’ve been knocking to audition hoping to be a singer." (Youngjae)

“Since 3rd year in junior high school, I’ve been working with underground hiphop artists. When my parents found out about it they strongly opposed on the idea. Then I got to vocational school (Yuhan Technical High School) and said that they would allow me to be a singer if I did well so I studied hard. Then a scholarship was offered from a named college and in the end got my parent’s permission. Passed to college but have not attend.” (Yongguk)

“I fell for dancing eversince I was a kid. In middle school, my friends and I created a dancing clubs and entered dance competitions. The show was by a casting manager. I was really lucky.” (Jongup)

“I joined a dance academy in my 5th year of elementary school. Watching DBSK and Super Junior brought me up to be a singer. Joined the team after passing the academy’s audition.” (ZELO)

“I dream of being a singer eversince I was little. I worked hard to audition and sing professionally to learn more skills and I had to also study hard in school. Auditioned last summer and joined the team at last. I dream to be a great vocalist like 4MEN’s Shin YongJae.” (Daehyun)

- The title track ‘Warrior’ has an intense dance which is often compared to H.O.T’s debut song ‘Warrior’s Descendant’.

“It is an honor to be compared with the seniors. But the seniors were from the 90s and at that time, we were too young to know anything properly.” (ZELO)

- How is it like living in one dorm?

“We live together in a villa in Hannam-dong, Seoul. There are a total of 3 rooms and we use one room together. Another one is the closet-room, and the other one is a music studio. We have the chores divided thoroughly. Maknae ZELO does the laundry, Jongup does the dishes, Himchan throws the garbage, Youngjae keeps everything organized, as a leader I am in charge of managing (what goes around) the dorm. Haha” (Yongguk)

- You are in the same company with SECRET. Are you familiar with each other.

“The sunbaenims took care of us eversince we were trainees. They make us food on Chuseok (Thanksgiving) · Lunar New Year and brought it to the rehearsal studio for us.” (Youngjae)

General roleplay etiquette applies. No god modding, no controlling my character, etc. Literate roleplays are my go-to unless they are crack/joking with others and dash commentary. You are not obligated to match my length and vice versa, but do put some effort into the writing! I use icons as well that I make myself and format my lettering. If you want to write and find my formatting difficult to read, just let me know and I will happily use plain text. Also, if you are new to roleplaying/writing on Tumblr, I am much less likely write with you. I just prefer experience, is all.

Plotting is important to me, but not absolutely necessary. I enjoy knowing where to push the plot towards for better and more efficient writing. However, I am very capable of spur of the moment interactions so feel free to do either.

Please don’t take anything said as beliefs or morals of the mun (Me) unless specifically stated otherwise. Sometimes bad guys say bad things, sometimes good guys say bad things. If you don’t care for how I portray Clora, then that’s fine.

Activity can be spacey. I love to write, but irl responsibilities take priority. As a college student and an artist, I dip often. But I almost always lurk so feel free to send messages/asks.

Let me know if you’re interested! I’m usually not the type to message first because I hate to come off as pushy. So just let me know if you want to write! Jonathan’s Life (just a teaser)

“Jacob had sleeves. One arm was rather dull. You know, the kind of bland Viking ornaments you see on every other guy in the street. But I liked the other sleeve. Four names twirled around his other arm from wrist to shoulder in shadowed lettering together with bands of small flowers and vines. When he talked about it, that it was the names of his siblings, what they meant to him, how he had designed the sleeve himself together with the tattoo artist, how happy and proud he was with the end result, his whole face lit up. I guess that’s why I forgot all about it being totally cheesy. I liked it, I really liked it, because he being so delighted with it was the only thing that mattered in the end. And of course I liked it because it was a sleeve.

Have I told you about my thing with tattoos? Yeah, it’s a thing. I like to look at them. I like to touch them. As in caressing them. The bigger the tattoo, the better. Yes, I know, a weird, a stupid, sometimes a problematic thing. I mean, it’s not always easy to get permission to touch other people’s tattoos because it involves touching their skin and normally skin isn’t supposed to be touched by strangers. Once, that was a bad day, I asked one of the Angels if I could touch his. That was a really stupid thing to do and nearly cost me a broken nose. But I’ve also been lucky. At one of Tony’s afterparties I met this older dude, older than me at least, who had Jörmungandr tattooed on his back. All of his back. In colours. He took of his T-shirt to show it to me, never put it back on, and let me touch it for an hour while he talked with Tony and some friends. An hour. I was in heaven. And he didn’t even want me to go home with him which I thought was the obvious cost of playing with that gigantic beast. The mythical worm, not the man, that is.

I don’t have any tats myself, I haven’t gotten around to it, which is an excuse for saying I have never found a tattoo I want. I want something special. Or not just special, I want something unique. I know I could go down to Paint Shop by the canals and have them draw a tattoo specifically for me. Like that guy with the worm did. That would be unique, in some ways. But I don’t have that kind of money and although they never use their templates more than once, all of their tattoos still look the same. With some help I might be able to draw a template myself, that at least would be one of a kind, but every time I think about what to draw my mind just doesn’t want to come up with anything that seems worth it. I mean, if I have to walk around with something etched into my skin for the rest of my life it has to matter, right? Like getting the same tattoo as your husband on the day of your marriage because you’re going to spend the rest of your lives together. That kind of matter. But as I don’t believe in everlasting love, I’ll have to work out my tattoo predicament on my own. The only thing I know is that I don’t want any colours.

Jacob’s tattoos were all black. And he let me touch them. Didn’t even blink an eye, only smiled, when I asked him. We even changed places in the bar so I could easier touch the names on his left arm. Yes, his sibling’s names were on his left arm, as in closer to his heart. I don’t know what was wrong with me that evening. Everything about Jacob was this absurd mixture of cheesy, ordinary, and ironic. Maybe it was because I got to fondle his tattoos, maybe it was down to the beer we had, but that evening his ironic ordinary cheesiness didn’t bother me at all. The only thing I hadn’t really given a thought was that even a straight guy might get ideas when your fingers trace every single black line on his arm all evening. It’s not that I didn’t listen when he ironically commented on braking up with his girlfriend. And I think I did notice the fact that he didn’t withdraw his arm when I told him that no, I don’t have a girlfriend, and no, girls aren’t really my thing. I mean, I should have realised there can’t be that many straight dudes, like the worm guy, who willingly lets you caress their skin for a prolonged period of time while you smile at them and tell them that you’re gay.

“I’ve never done this before.” As soon as the words came out of his mouth he looked down. Anywhere but my eyes. No, I really wasn’t on my best that evening. It must have been that shitty rehearsal where I got yelled at again and again, not only by my director, but my fellow performers as well. But I honestly had no idea what Jacob was talking about. The only thing that came to mind was me objectifying him by giving in to my thing.”
