the unofficial rules of reading comic books (in my completely unqualified opinion)
1. do not start by reading Alan Moore comics (speaking from experience,, they're good but I would recommend getting used to the medium and understanding the social context of them first)
2. adapt to any new information given and accept that you will likely never fully understand everything
3. you will eventually find that comic writer that you hate with a burning passion (everyone has one) (and if you don't, you will)
4. new 52 fucking sucks (there are a few exceptions)
5. sometimes they will set up a storyline and then drop it
6. you do not need to understand the context of everything you read
7. you do not have to read everything in order
8. most comics have arcs of about 5-6 issues, these will likely come out at trade paperbacks or graphic novels later
9. YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY HAS GRAPHIC NOVELS!!!
10. try not to get stuck, I know it's easy to just read batman or just read marvel comics but please try to branch out or try something new,,,, reading only X-Men is fun and all but sometimes you gotta read some Blue Beetle too
11. other comic fans have different opinions to you, that's fine
12. every single comic has a biggest fan and a biggest hater (this is okay)
13. support your local comic shop/comic fairs
14. comics can be very dumb
15. the biggest difference between Marvel and DC is the name of the publisher
16. most DC writers/artists have written/drawn Marvel comics and most Marvel writers/artists have written/drawn DC comics
17. You should check out other comic publishers like IDW, Archie, Dark Horse or Image,, or even check out local comic makers in your area
18. canon is the things that stay the same when a different person writes a character
19. at some point every comic fan will read these comics, House of M, Watchmen, One of DC's many Crisis Events, a Marvel comic where The Phoenix Ruins Everything, the Comic you Hate Most in the World, Probably Something Written By Stan Lee and The Sandman
20. no one stays dead except Bucky Barnes, Jason Todd and Uncle Ben
21. the nineties in comics were the nineties in comics
22. you must read comics that don't have batman in it (please I'm begging you)
23. your favourite cartoon was likely inspired by comics (or written by) a comic writer
24. someone else has a completely different interpretation of your favourite character (and both interpretations can co-exist) (it is the nature of a medium that has so many creators telling stories about the same characters for details to contradict sometimes)
25. comics are artforms, they tell stories, they can be beautiful and thought provoking and gut wrenching and heart breaking and hopeful (or they can be none of these things)
26. questioning character choices, small details and information given in the comics you read is the first step to analysing and engaging with the material (so you think batman should kill??? now think about why he doesn't.) (you believe magneto is right??? now tell me why he's considered a villain)
27. sometimes it's deeper than you think
28. sometimes it isn't
29. remember the names of the writers and artists you love, too often comic creators are under appreciated
30. Jeff is people too
(feel free to add more)

Ben 10's middle name
Something I wanted to bring attention to before I clock out tonight.
So I'm a massive fan of Ben 10. It was one of my favorite shows growing up, and I can say without a doubt that it not only encouraged my love of superheroes, but also my love of sci-fi and outside-the-box creature design.
Because I'm sad, Ben 10 trivia takes up a massive amount of my brainspace, and one of those pieces of trivia is that Ben's middle name is Kirby. In isolation, this always seemed odd to me, as I generally associate the name with the Nintendo character. It wasn't until very recently that I learned the name's true significance.
Another piece of trivia that I know is that Ben 10's creators: Man of Action, are a small writer's collective founded and owned by four comic book writers and artists. And with that context it might be a bit more obvious that that unusual middle name is instead an homage to a very different person called Kirby.
Yes. That Kirby. *The* Kirby. Jack Kirby, the co-creator of pretty much all the major Marvel characters and teams you can name off the top of your head. The guy was a legend in his own lifetime, and for good reason, and I'm sure many of us know how tragically that all turned out.
But more than just being a legendary artist and passionate creator, something of particular note here is an artistic technique attributed to him called the "Kirby Krackle".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those pop-art-esque dots were all over the guy's work, especially when depicting cosmic power for the Silver Surfer or even his Fourth World works over at DC.
And they're very familiar to Ben 10, too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So thank you, Jack Kirby, for all that you did to drive the comic book medium and the superhero genre forward, and all those that you inspired to continue in your footsteps both on the page and on the small screen.

20 Questions for fic writers
Tagged by @bad-at-names-and-faces and @i-did-not-mean-to
Thanks guys!!
1. How many works do you have on AO3? I have 96 works in Ao3 BUT I have 104 on Fanfiction (yes, I still post there don't judge me.) I think there are just like 3 works that I have on Ao3 that I didn't pu up on FanFiction.
2. What's your total AO3 word count? 411,089 (Not too bad, not too bad)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Primarily I write for Tolkien works, Star Wars and Batman (bat fam to be more specific). But I'm very much a, write one for each thing I love kinda gall. Honorary mentions include Sandman, Frozen, Twilight Avengers, Merlin and Teen Titans.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Lonely Stars Drifting In The Black (Star Wars) (so not surprised XD)
Kudos: 2,276
The Unexpected Pop Of Things (Lucifer TV)
Kudos: 1,265
This Isn't What It Looks Like (Lucifer TV)
Kudos: 762
Death of a Star (Lucifer TV)
Kudos: 760
Alone Never More (Batman comics) (you are just an okay story, why are you here? 😭)
Kudos: 729
(I'm kinda surprised and offended that I didn't put Lucifer on the honorary mentions and it still took places 2, 3 AND 4 👁)
5. Do you respond to comments? Oh yes (though I might take a couple of months if I some slip my mind). Almost all of them. I tend to not answer back to emojis because I'm like... I don't know what to answer?
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? This was kind of a hard question and it took me way too long to answer, so here, have the three runner ups.
A Crime Of Passion (Twilight: New Moon)
Ends with: Carlisle being forced to drink blood and being unable to deal with it.
At The End Of The Earth (Hellboy del Toro movies)
Ends with: John Myers being mauled by wolves and his last thoughts being of how alone he feels and of dying alone.
She's not a very good mother (Batman comics)
Ends with: Janet Drake dying as she chokes on poison and regrets she wont be able to do better by her son. She always thought she'd have more time.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Unlike the last one, this one was so easy to pick because, yeah... I'm an angsty girly for sure so the pool for REALLY happy endings was SMALL.
Drizzle Bt The Sea (Teen Titans cartoon)
It's quite short and all around just happy in vibes. Just Robin and Jericho playing by the sea under the rain.
8. Do you get hate on fics? I don't remember that I ever have? Thought I thought a couple might get hate, they didn't.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I tired it ONCE. And you know what happened? The sex was interrupted by trauma and they characters had to top to talk about the whole thing.
There is also that other one time but we're not going to talk about it.
But all in all I'm much more interested in exploring gen stories ✨
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? I LOVE crossovers. I don't have many, but I am plagued mentally by them. I have 3 posted (only one on Ao3). And I'm not sure which one's craisiest. But the 2 on FF are both Rise of the Guardians crossovers, one with Avengers and the other with LES MISÉRABLES. What was younger me smoking? I would really like to know.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I'm aware 👁
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I think someone might've asked one or two times? But I honestly don't remember, if it ever happened, it was ages ago.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Oh yes! It's always so fun to me. I've done it a couple of times with @slightly-crimson-tornado and I'm currently working on one with @pushing-daisies-renaissance ✨
14. What’s your all time favourite ship? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Steve Trevor x Diana Prince I think. Close runner up is definitely Satine Kryze x Obi-wan Kenobi. And I'm VERY fond of Bruce Wayne x Selina Kyle.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? I have a stupid amount of wips so I'll just go by posted ones. I have this story idea that I REALLY Like but I came up with it ages ago, and though i still like the idea I'm doubtful that I'll ever give it the time it deserves to go back to ):
Because the truth was too terrible (Avengers)
It's a story about Natasha being trapped inside her mind and Thor getting in to wake her up. I'm still pretty fond of the general gist of it. But it's OLD now.
16. What are your writing strengths? Aaaaaahhh. Trauma management? Like, they way people go about it and navigate it; how they talk about it with others? At least I THINK that's my strength. People keep complimenting those things XD
17. What are your writing weaknesses? I am too flowery with wording and I get sick of myself. It's out of control and I sometimes can't help it.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I love it. If I can't get help I'll just wing a google translate, or god forbid do some research on structure. I'm BAD at it, but I love it and use it frequently.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Inazuma Eleven (anime) hehe. Love of my youth, protect me.
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? I love this this Twilight one-shot I wrote some years ago. It made me suffer a lot (for reasons you can find in the author's notes) but the idea has always had a tight grip on me. I really like it (and hope to got I can get the sequel out one day).
A Crime Of Passion (Twilight: New Moon)
BUT two honorable mentions. One, my Star Wars series where Obi-wan get's rescued from Death Watch by Jango Fett. And Two, my VERY self indulgent crossover between Avengers x Merlin, I love the story and I'm really super fond of what I've gotten down so far.
Celestial Bodies Of The Lonesome Variety (LSD) (Star Wars)
Of The Old Things Hidden In The World (Merlin x Avengers crossover)
Ya know, just in case you feel like it, tagging @slightly-crimson-tornado , @cilil , @dottie-wan-kenobi , @fishing4stars , @arlenianchronicles , @scary-grace

How do you think MV19 is going to adapt "Moominpappa's memoirs"? Because it seems like they're also doing the comet adaptation, so they are going to clash both¿
I doubt Gusty would have the gall to make a straight adaptation of Moominpappa's Memoirs so late into the series and somehow fit it into the plot of Comet in Moominland, or at least I hope they don't have the gall to do it in their 13 episode runtime.
They already referenced the story in good detail in the Golden Tail episode, they've already referenced Edward, the Muddler, the Nibling and Hodgkins, now we just need them to follow it through with something more substantial, because the show's viewers who haven't watched or read anything else of Moomin are definitely going to be wondering who exactly Muddler and Hodgkins are, and what the heck a Nibling is.
They've already used up the Ghost (or at least a character similar to it) and sent him to the aurora borealis in season 1, I can imagine that maybe they would, like, do a throwback to him but honestly who even thought about the 2019 Ghost in any substantial way after that episode? The creators don't even bother putting Emma or Ninny in crowd shots or give them small character bits past their respective episodes, so it's doubtful they'd being the Ghost back. It'd be redundant to have an episode dedicated to Moominpappa's backstory adapted into a stage play only for us to see a flashback version of it unless they really wanna go out there with it. The Joxter lacks even a peep of reference which is super weird so it'd be double weird to bring him in with Muddler and Hodgkins who have been mentioned, like, who the hell is that guy?
If they want to bring in Moominpappa's Memoirs in a way that feels more natural for the final season of a show they should probably just adapt the epilogue where they have a big family reunion, perhaps interweave Moominpappa's character into it and make him proactive in seeking out his old friends for the adventure and we'd get the adaptation through his reminiscing while the end of the world is ongoing, I think that'd be neat.
You could even sprinkle in a little heartbreak and say he's doing it for a proper goodbye because if they did in fact make Moomins and the Great Flood canon then that would make Moominpappa abandoning his family for years canon, and that could extend to him abandoning the Oshun Oxtra without warning because something something he was too selfish and he gets character development when he realizes how self-centered he's been and tries to make up for it.
Perhaps that would be the B-plot with the Moominparents instead of them staying at home waiting around like in the book while the kids go off on their mountain-trotting adventure.
Honestly I just want Sniff's character arc to end with him finding his proper parents who care for him along with getting the cat he adopts in Comet in Moominland. Everyone else has been very rude or disregarding him throughout the show, that was even his main thing in season 3, so it would mean the world to me if he just. Gets a Happy Ending.
What I'm most worried about in an adaptation (adjacent) of Memoirs is the infantilization of the Muddler, everything else is either already gotten down by the show (Moominpappa's character) or difficult to mess up unless they're actively trying to (Hodgkins and Joxter's characters) but Muddler........ It's already a problem within the fandom and we know Gutsy and Moomin co. do cater to the fandom quite a bit. Maybe it's just that he's my favorite character ever but I am. Worried about him. Especially considering characters like Sniff or Toffle.
But like, yeah, you can do alot with Moominpappa's Memoirs but I doubt Gutsy writers have the imagination or brain power to manage it alongside a Comet in Moominland adaptation some the likely adaptations of the comics or original plot episodes. That episode based on Moominvalley in November is the most egregious thing they've done in the world as an adaptation and I hope they don't stoop down to that again but, yeah.
It really sucks that the showrunners weren't sure if they were gonna get past season 2, they could've done alooooot better with the show's plot and character arc structure and I'm sceptical about the quality of a simultaneous Comet in Moominland and Moominpappa's Memoirs adaptation for the final season. But we'll see.

Fic - Chapter Three
I apologise for the lack of updates recently. I've been super busy.
Chapter 1
Prev
Current Comic update
March 22nd
"Happy Birthday dear Will! Happy Birthday to you!" The mottled choir finishes its song with a swell of emotion. Robin Buckley, co-founder and Co President of Hawkins High Pride, pats a mildly embarrassed Will Byers on the back.
Robin’s insanely cool. She's a loud, talkative senior, and one of Jonathan's friends from drama class. She also seems weirdly bonded with Steve Harrington, which Will finds odd, but Robin assures him Steve is nice. He thinks he'll take Robin’s word for it.
"How can you be 15 baby Byers?" She asks, a nostalgic grin across her freckled face. Robin’s girlfriend, Vickie, ruffles his hair.
"Seems like only yesterday we blackmailed Troy Walsh into leaving you alone in the sandbox. My God, that was back in Elementary School!"
Vickie grimaces, as if to say, Jesus I'm old. Robin whacks her on the arm.
"You're an old lady!" She teases Vickie, that evil glint in her honey eyes.
"Are you into old ladies Rob?" Asks Will, wiggling his eyebrows up and down in a suggestive fashion.
Vickie roars with laughter at the sudden flush of colour on her girlfriend's face. Before this interesting situation can escalate any further, Eddie Munson, the slightly intimidating, but hilariously clumsy, other co-president and founder, spills a full 2 litre bottle of Fanta into a bowl of doritos. Everyone in the small group descends into chaos as they attempt to sort out the bowl of soggy corn chips.
"Okay everyone! Stay safe, I hope everyone had a good spring break and–" Robin cuts herself off before she can start rambling. She's not very accustomed to being the centre of attention, she's just starting to gain her confidence. Her autism and adhd can make her a bit rambly sometimes too. Eddie Munson takes over, he's more used to being in the spotlight than Robin.
"We'll see you next week!" He grins and waves as the handful of students file out of the classroom.
There weren't as many kids at Hawkins Pride today -not that there were usually more than fifteen anyway- but the seniors were only kids back at school today. To be completely honest, Will wouldn't have come today either if Jonathan and El didn't have things on at school this afternoon too.
Jonathan's photography club won't be finished for another fifteen minutes so Will wanders in the direction of the gym. El's there with the Captain of the Cheer team, Chrissy Cunningham.
Chrissy, despite being popular, seems nice. She's offered her afternoon to give El extra coaching for the cheer team. Will won't lie, he was surprised when El decided to try out for the cheerleading team. But so far, she's loving it. Will keeps finding her practising tumbles and jumps and God knows what other crazy tricks in her room.
He shoves the door to the gym open. El and Chrissy are in the centre of the gym with a gymnastics mat. El holds up a pom-pom and waves at him as Will takes a seat on the bleachers. He'll let them finish off whatever cheer stuff they're doing over there. He pulls out his sketchbook and begins drawing what he sees. El in her cheerleading top and black leggings, her hair pulled back into a bun.
Chrissy does some flippy thing, her blonde ponytail twirling around in the air. Will giggles a bit when El attempts to copy, but ultimately mucks up the landing and falls on her ass. Before he can yell out and ask her if she’s okay, Chrissy’s helping her up once more.
***
“You pair ready for school?” Asks Hop. He surveys the twins. El’s hair isn’t done, and she’s missing a sock. Will only has one shoe on and his backpack seems to have gone walkabouts. Both have scarlet blood dripping from opposite nostrils. There’s cushions hovering next to El and gold sparks flickering around Will’s fingertips.
Jonathan wanders in, ready to leave, his keys dangling in his fingers. El and Will watch as an eyebrow climbs its way up his forehead. The cushions fall to the floor with a soft thud and the sparks disappear with a crackle.
“What on earth are you both doing?”
“Friendly disagreement!” Will quickly supplies, an explanation would send them down a rabbit hole.
“Super friendly!” El agrees, nodding hastily.
Jonathan’s not sure he’ll ever get used to the wacko antics his siblings get up to. It was weird enough gaining a half-sister, let alone one with superpowers. And then, as if that wasn’t enough to process, his little brother can electrocute people with nothing but determination. Yep, it was official, Jonathan Byers was no longer the weirdest in the family. Damn it, he’d loved that title, so typical of the twins to steal it from him!
“Hurry up!” Jonathan threatens as he ushers Hopper outside. Will and El’s nonsense can’t cause the entire household to be late. Some family members have, like, actual jobs that they need to be on time for.
He stops back in the kitchen to shepard El away from the Eggos and again in Will’s doorway to remind him that no– he doesn’t have time to get his paints out, not if he wants to bike to school with the rest of his friends. He loves the twins– really, he does, but they do seem to have inherited Joyce’s slightly scattered tendencies. They do manage to get out the door on time though, and Jonathan waves to them from his car. He watches that they meet Max at the end of their street, then makes his own way to Argyle’s place.
Meanwhile El greets Max with her usual running hug, yelling Max’s name from about half a street away. Will just laughs. They’re just so cute, the best of friends.
Will and Max strike up a conversation as El swaps shoes from her white converse to her favourite purple roller skates.
“So… Mike’s starting today?” Will asks, and really, truly, he’s trying to sound casual. It doesn’t help that he and Mike got along so well at the park the other day. He can’t help it, okay? Mike is the definition of good looking and he’s Will’s estranged best friend. What more could you want?
Unfortunately for Will, Max is blind, not deaf. She hears the excitement in Will’s tone and shoots him a coy, lopsided smile. Will groans internally. Why are girls such scheming little terrors?
“Yeah that’s right!
El subtly steadies herself with her powers, clutching onto Max's arm and she wobbles about on the stopper of one skate. When she regains composure, and ceases to resemble Bambi on ice, the three race onwards, speeding towards Dustin’s Street.
As Will pedals, they pass Hawkins Laboratory, or at least the skeleton of it. He shudders lightly, remembering his God awful stay there as a twelve year old. The scar on the inside of his wrist tingles as they pass the perimeter quickly. Will steals a brief glance at El to check she's alright, but El seems to have flown ahead on her skates.
Bother her! Will thinks as he stands up on his bike to accelerate faster. Max enjoys zooming down the road, not too fast, but not slow enough that she'll lose the race to Dustin’s place.
They reach the Henderson's in record time, four minutes from the Hopper/Byers house. El has the most shit eating grin on her face as Will catches up to her, waiting outside Dustin’s house.
"I won!"
It's then that Will spies the bright red drop threatening to spill from El's nostril. He knew it! She was cheating! El gives him a cheeky wink, which plainly says "welp, you put the idea in my head. No take backs!"
Dustin’s front door opens and the man himself emerges.
Will takes a moment to assess Dustin’s appearance. His hair is standing on end and the sleeves of his jumper are rather singed. It looks like he's stuck his fingers in a powerpoint. El vocalises this, giving Will a playfully accusational glare.
"You know it wasn't my powers, I was with you the whole morning!"
"I wasn't with you when you lost the race!"
Dustin cackles, almost rolling on the floor. Will honestly wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Dustin was descended from a family of hyenas. He's basically the meme guy of the group. Will's pretty sure Dustin's sent more Tiktoks to the group chat than El has posted pictures of eggos to her instagram. (Half of them aren't even good photos. She usually forgets not to devour half a waffle before she takes the picture.)
"Oh man! Nah I can't– Oh Jesus– El you're hilarious–" Dustin leans himself against a wall trying to breathe. Max rolls her pale white eyes. Her bemused face hasn't changed a bit.
"Ya' know Dustin, this is probably the first time in my life I actually wanna see you!"
After learning that Dustin was attempting to invent a phone charger that ran on potato peels, Dustin had jumped on his bike and they hurried over to Lucas's.
Lucas is waiting outside his place, already on his bike. His green and orange basketball uniform can be seen poking out of his duffle bag. He greets everyone with a wave and his giant friendly grin. Except Max– She holds her hands out making a grabbing motion. Lucas plops his face into her hands and lets Max feel his face and hair.
"You got a haircut!" She exclaims as they pedal or skate slowly toward Mike's house.
The house looks just like it did in Will’s vague memories. Old, probably built in the seventies, maybe earlier. Two stories and decent size, a home built for a family.
"It could be a bit of a wait." Dustin warns Will. Everyone dumps their bikes and skateboards to sit on the curb. "His dad's kinda… unhelpful."
Not necessarily a family home anymore, from what he’s been told. Mike doesn’t seem to get on with his dad very well. That’s weirdly relatable to Will. His real dad, Hop, is perfectly fine, he loves Will, El and Jonathan so much it can actually be a little unbearable, but Lonnie?
Lonnie Byers was an asshole, and Will’s glad he’s pissed off to Indianapolis.
From somewhere inside the house, loud music’s playing. Will recognises the song as Fight for your Right by The Beastie Boys. He giggles a little– what a random song to be blasting at 8:30 on a Thursday morning. Out of the corner of Will's eye, he notices Dustin sneaking up behind Lucas.
There's a loud SLAP noise, then…
"I like ya cut G!"
Lucas turns around to glare at Dustin. He gives him the most deadpan, unamused stare that Will's ever seen.
"I actually hate you."
Dustin sits down between El and Lucas. His shit eating grin says it all.
"Nah, you actually don't."
There's a shout from somewhere inside the house and the music switches off. Heavy footsteps sound and the front door bangs open and closed. There stands Mike, his hair pulled back into a ponytail. Off his arm hangs a small girl. Her hair is blonde and in two pigtails and she appears to be wearing an Elsa t-shirt. She looks mildly terrified.
Mike stands at his door and quickly raises his middle finger. Then he looks down to the little girl– presumably his sister, Holly –and apologises. Then he joins everyone else at the curb.
"One– Sorry, dad's a dick! Two– hey everyone! Three– Will, Jane, this is my sister Holly."
Holly waves her hand rapidly at the twins, so fast Will’s half afraid it’ll fly off. She then point to the top of her head.
"Cat!" She exclaims, gesturing to a pair of pink glittery cat ears. Then she runs over to Max, meowing as she trots. Will bites back a chuckle. Kids will be kids.
"Um. Yeah. She's going through a cat phase." Mike explains hastily. He looks really awkward, rubbing the back of his neck. El wraps her arms around Mike's waist and pulls him in for one of her death hugs. Will swears he sees Mike go blue before El finally lets go of him. One of these days she’s going to make someone pass out from a lack of oxygen.
"Hi!" Says Will softly as Mike wheels a fancy looking bike out from the garage.
Mike beams back at Will. His smile could light up this whole town.
"Hi!" He echos.
***
"So Will, tell me: is there anything about Hawkins High that I oughtta know?"
They're walking leisurely down the hall. Will's been instructed to just walk about with Mike, show him around from a student's perspective. He contemplates Mike's question. Hawkins High is pretty standard honestly. Nothing out of the ordinary. There are plenty of assholes, this is Indiana after all.
"Well… There's mean girls and rude jocks. Lucas and Jane could give you a pretty good run down of them."
"Jane gets bullied? But she seems so… happy?" Mike has a look of utter disbelief on his face.
Will shrugs. That’s El’s way of coping, she balances out the negativity by being super positive and nice to everyone all the time. Not at home though, at home she’s a menace. Still excitable, but she looks a whole lot less innocent when she’s playing pop music obnoxiously loud and wearing Will’s favourite flannel like it’s her own.
That’s probably just a sibling thing though.
"She's on the cheer team. Most of the girls are nice… Angela Darwin though…" Will trails off.
Mike's eyes widen. He most definitely knows Angela Darwin. Her days as Queen of Hawkins Grammar School still haunt Mike. Her fake nice voice. The way she would casually give Max flack for not having much money. Her stupid walk.
"That bitch? Is she still strutting around like a peacock with a pencil up her ass?"
Will bursts into a fit of laughter. He pictures Angela’s face atop a peacock's body. This is definitely something he has to draw later. He might even watercolour it!
"Bro the mental images–" He manages to say between loud sniggers.
Mike, who'd been doing a fairly decent job of keeping a straight face, smirks. When he meets Will's eyes, all composure dissolves and they're basically leaning on each other laughing.
When they finally regain the ability to look at each other without cackling, Will continues to tell Mike about El's experience on the cheer team.
"She joined up last term. I was sceptical, but most of the girls are really nice. Team captain is Chrissy Cunningham, and then there's Jennifer Hayes, Ruby Schwartz, Delilah and Amelia Ashfeild and Trinity Jacobsen."
Mike nods. He can't think of anything else to say right now… his brain's still stuck on Angela the Peacock.
He’s silent for a beat, then Mike's lips part into a mischievous grin. He quietly snickers, stealing glances at Will waiting to make eye contact. When Will catches his eye, he too snickers, correctly guessing that Mike's still picturing a feathered Angela Darwin. Together they erupt into another fit of giggles. (And Will calls Dustin a hyena!)
The boys keep laughing, not hearing a classroom door creak open. They don’t hear the soft thud of footsteps, they keep laughing, leaning against each other until Will catches the sharp “Ahem” coming from possibly the most grumpy teacher in all of Hawkins High School.
He looks up from where he’d buried his face into Mike’s shoulder and straight into the eyes of Mr Durham, the Algebra teacher who reeks of coffee and hates Will’s entire existence for some reason. (Probably because of that one time he made Will cry in class and promptly got a full Hopper family ‘talking to’.) His face, if possible, looks even grumpier than usual.
“Byers! What the HELL do you think you’re doing?”
Will swallows hard. Usually he’d just mumble an apology and be on his way, but Eddie’s been bugging him to stand up for himself more, and Jonathan’s given him plenty of pep talks about this guy. He takes a deep breath and tries to find some confidence within him.
“Leave him alone! He was just showing me around!” Mike spits, before Will can think of something to say. Mike’s eyes are narrowed and his hands are on his hips. He looks like he means business. Will gets a strange feeling of deja vu, he’s definitely seen this look on Mike before, somewhere inside his fractured memories of kindergarten.
“Well, well, well, Michael Wheeler! Didn’t think I’d be seeing you here!” Mr Durham spits.
Why on earth does he sound like a cartoon villain? Will can picture him in a mask and elaborate black costume, actually. (Now he’s got another caricature to draw!)
“I didn't think you were still allowed to teach, after what you said to me and Will, but here we are!" Mike retorts.
Mr Durham's face contorts to look even more angry. Will hadn't thought it was possible to get that mad, honestly. He's surprised there isn't a scribbled cloud over the teacher's head. He seems to take Mike's words as a challenge.
"Well, it looks like I was right! Look at the two of you, cutting class together. You pair of f–"
"Finish that sentence and I'll make sure you get fired!"
"Yeah! Homophobia ain't cool brochacho!"
Mike and Will whip around to see Jonathan and his strange friend Argyle standing just outside the opened classroom door. Jonathan's angry face strongly resembles Joyce's, to the point where Will's almost certain it is his Mom standing there. Argyle looks high as a kite, but still protective, in his own quirky way.
"Ah! Jonathan Byers–"
"Don't call me that name. I've told you a million times it's Hopper now."
Mr Durham closes his eyes and sighs in frustration. Will really hates this teacher. He acts like it's a personal attack that he and Jonathan don't want to have anything to do with Lonnie Byers.
"Okay then Hopper, why don't we all just go back to where we should be." The sarcasm that drips from Mr Durham's voice sends chills down Will’s spine. He's so–
Will doesn't even know what!
"That," Jonathan says, his tone low and warning, "sounds like the best idea you've had all day!"
Mr Durham gives Will and Mike one last awful scowl, then marches back into his classroom. Jonathan shoots Will a wink and reluctantly follows his grumpy teacher back inside. Argyle waves his whole arm at Will and Mike, yelling:
"See ya, my dudes!"
Will chuckles and waves back. That's Argyle for ya. He then turns back to Mike, who looks pretty frustrated still.
"We should probably get out of here."
"No arguments from me!" Mike agrees.
Will runs down the hall, to the staircase, gesturing for Mike to follow him. Mike's rather un-athletic run is pretty amusing to be honest. When Mike catches up to him, Will perches on the handrail and slides down.
Mike lets out a laugh, some of his anger fading. He slides down in a similar manner, then follows Will outside into the school yard.
***
Will covers his ears when the school bell clangs at recess. (It’s so noisy, and for what?) He shows Mike a spot under a shady tree. It’s in close proximity to the assisted learning block, which is useful for Max, it means she doesn’t have to walk too far, and can just use her cane and not have to have someone guide her.
El likes being outside in nature, to feel the sun and hear the birds, she missed out on a lot of that, being trapped in the lab. Sometimes she’ll just lie there under the shade of the tree and rest. It’s probably the only time she’s not moving. She loves the feel of the grass on her skin, even if it makes her itchy afterwards.
Dustin likes that it’s secluded enough that he can show everyone tiktoks without getting into trouble for the volume or language. He can sing to himself and nerd out about his current fandoms without getting heaps of negative attention. Mostly he tells a bunch of horrible puns. Only El laughs at them, Will’s a little concerned that Dustin’s corrupting her sense of humour.
Lucas likes that there’s space for him to run around the tree without stepping on anyone. He’s the most sporty out of the group, with Max at a close second. Lucas never could sit still, in the entire time Will’s known him, Lucas has always wanted to just run. That was part of what made his parents suspect he had ADHD. Now he’s on medication the urge to run isn’t as strong, but he likes having the freedom to do so anyway.
And Will? He loves the beauty of the spot. In the fall when the leaves turn orange and red. In the winter when snowflakes fall soft on the exposed branches of the tree. And now in spring, when the tree is covered in flower buds and the sun shines its golden rays through the gaps, bathing everything in warmth. He loves to sit and sketch the landscape, or his friends in the aesthetic lighting.
Will has a feeling Mike’s gonna like it here too.

It is a bit odd that almost all of the most lovable IDW characters are the ones that aren't as smart, and that they're specifically portrayed as the better option in most of the comics.
I think about the Swerve vs. Perceptor thing alot. Both of them are considered annoying for talking too much, but when you get to the MTMTE comics and Swerve's character arc you get to see that he's fun and lovable and a little bit of a mess- he's someone to relate to and see as a classic "Good" character with tangible growth and an entire storyline where he gets friends and people who care about him even though he's "annoying".
On the other hand, Perceptor is consistently punished for being excited by scientific pursuits. He's told to dumb it down for the masses, to stop talking so much about the things he enjoys, to keep it simple and short all the time while he's part of the Wreckers during the war. When we get to MTMTE, he's more withdrawn and silent, and he doesn't get much of a character arc that is easily seen. He regains his excitement a small bit while interacting with Brainstorm- who is yet another unethical scientist in the IDW line of villainous scientists- and slowly comes around to being a bit more outspoken like he used to be... in the background. He's forgotten for the most part, and only brought up when something scientific happens that needs to be explained by someone other than Brainstorm, but he isn't really loveable to the readers and his returning verbosity isn't given any sort of recognition as healing or growth on his part. Most of his interactions are just playing off of Brainstorm's, and he's barely got anything to himself during the entire MTMTE and Lost Light series.
Between the two chatterboxes, while both are good guys, one is actively portrayed as a good character- and it isn't the smart one.
(To be clear, I love Swerve and Perceptor both, I like the subtlety of Perceptor's growth in MTMTE even if I wish he got more time to show it and a bit more recognition in the comics for it, I just wish he wasn't seen as annoying during his time with the Wreckers because of him getting excited over science stuff. It's sad to shut down something that makes someone so happy, and it happened consistently throughout the times we got Perceptor content in IDW- let the guy ramble about electrons or something, just once is all I'm asking! Let him be a cute nerd damnit!)
Overall, there was a very heavy pro idiot bend to the IDW comic's writing and it honestly makes it unreadable for me.
I didn't like Rodimus from 86 because he didn't feel like a good replacement for Dadimus but I didn't actually hate hate him until IDW. I'm sorry, they'd all have been fucking dead in two mega-cycles at best with that characterization of Rodimus in charge. Basically every death is because of him and others being dumbass but it's the smart ones that get blamed.
Hated during Optimus into an abusive asshole.
Hated the victim blaming. Hated the toxic, co-dependent shit that was romanticized. Hated the celebration of abusive personalities.
The writing in general is just... bad. In my opinion and I'm not saying mine is brilliant or anything but for fucks sake. IDW is a trainwreck.
Anyone wonder why I get my villainous Autobots from IDW? Here's a hint, because it's a smorgasbord of horrible personalities and behaviours some fans go fucking wild for.

An introduction!
Tumblr media
"It's 1987. The colleges were just on the brink of summer break. Strange annuel disappearances have burdened the people of Bellsville, Ohio, for the past few decades now. It's not until August's older brother goes missing do the unholy horrors of the quiet church town start to reveal themselves. He won't be alone in uncovering the truth, though. Maybe he's closer than August thought."
Hello and welcome all newcomers and horror fanatics!
I have decided to finally give a small introduction to a horror book/graphic novel I'm in the hopes of developing called Dog Days.
This project is something I first began developing in my senior year of high school. I took time from it originally, due to the fact I didnt have a clue what I was doing in terms of story development; but have recently picked up the project again and have become very passionate about it once I began to flush out my characters once again and started to grasp concepts here and there.
I would absolutely adore some tips and pointers from more seasoned writers/graphic novel artists on how you develop your stories! I am mainly looking for tips atm on how to organize and develop plot points for the story!
Tumblr media
Here, I have a lineup of my characters. Below, I will provide a short description of each character!
August Briggs// Grew up in a very strict Catholic upbringing. He was born and raised on their family's sheep farm. His father, being the head pastor of their small town that enforced the law of God unto his 3 children. Their oldest son, Cain, August himself, and their youngest son, Reggie. August grew up with a deep passion for understanding the religious world and music, often attending and helping out at his towns local church events, even singing in the choir. He was the closest to his father. That was until his oldest brother went missing a short bit before his sophomore year of college. His parents became quiet, distant, and cold towards the other boys. August himself developing an underlying obsession about what happened to his brother. Though, he's often dismissed by his parents when he ask questions. August wants to help people around him and wants to see the best in everyone, even if that means attempting to manipulate them for what August believes, is for their own good. He's incredibly smart and attends college for a degree in religious studies to one day become a pastor like his father.
Donovan Meers// Honestly grew up with not much going for him. His parents were rather successful in finances, yet they never really made time for Don. Don being an only child, his parents often got him Comics and video games to keep him busy. This caused him to grow up reckless and unable to control his mouth, being raised more by books then parents. He constantly looks for escape through stories and more minor substances. Not having a guiding hand other than his childhood best friend, August. Don was put in the college through the grace of his parents, thinking he would make something of himself. He's rather good in the new computer sciences class, Science, and surprisingly, English. Yet, Don flunks at all others. Don is VERY co-dependent on August. August in turn thinks he can help Don change, even bringing Don with him to his father's church every Sunday, despite Dons protest on religion, Don seems to have a soft spot for August that causes little protest against him.
Annie Sholten// Is going to school in order to become a mortician. Having moved to Bellsville when she was in the 3rd grade, she and her family do not yet fully understand the customes of the town. Being fascinated with the concept of bodily autonomy, as well as death in general. Her father was a very big local game hunter who taught her about the mechanics of the body in animals that he'd kill. He also taught Amara a great respect for nature and the concept of life and death from a very early age. She's considered to be very spiritual and is often seen as a freak or the local hippie in the town, yet her parents couldn't be more proud of her.
Claire Boyce// Is the only one in the group who isn't in the local college the rest of the group attends. Instead, she works at her fathers mechanic shop, making a steady living helping her father repair old cars, her mom dislike its, thinking Claire should be more like girls her age and not elbow greased and smelling like motor oil. Claire couldn't care less and absolutely loves her job. She's very blunt about things but is handy when repairing cars and other motorized vehicles, even building her own bike in her father's shop.
Mikey Duffer// Is a top of the line athlete, he's the star quarterback of the local colleges football team, he's very sweet yet hard headed, he's Auggies first cousin and is Best friends with August's oldest brother. After August's brothers disappearance, he became distraught. This distraction in turn would cause him to becomes distracted during games, and his grades would slip. Eventually leading him to gain a knee injury that put him out for the semester. He vowed to help August and his "friends" find out what happened to his best friend, even if he does think they're a bunch of freaks.
I still have more characters in development for this story! Although I have a good idea of where it's heading. I thought I should give a little Introduction first to see what you guys think.
If you have questions regarding the story, feel free to let me know or DM me! I'm happy for feedback and suggestions! I hope you all enjoyed the little I've showed!

Nathaniel Barnes (& Harvey Bullock & Jim Gordon) Defending Homosexuality (Nathaniel Barnes x Male/Nonbinary/Not Cis etc. Reader, but this also has other cool stuff apart from romance like, uhm, him🤭😂)
@honestmrdual asked: So, about Barnes x reader request... How about Barnes and male reader, who insist on making their relationship known to public, at least in the precinct, and Barnes, pretty obviously, being opposed to this idea? Humour, or angst, or both, you can decide! :)
Author's note: Here are all of my thoughts, I hope you like them😊 This is soo much longer than expected
Reader: ambiguously not perceived as a woman (so a man, nonbinary, masculine/very androgynous woman, etc.)
Other featured characters: Harvey Bullock because he's gotta be against homophobia. Also a little mention of Jim & Oswald because they had something going there 😉
Warning: homophobia (not from the love-interest though 🙂), illegal homosexuality
First of all: whether homosexuality's illegal in Gotham or not, Nathaniel Barnes doesn't think of it as a sin. He may be a lawfully good character, thinking that the only line separating him from animals is the law, but he's not stupid: a healthy consensual relationship just isn't immoral, illegal or not. There's not the least bit internalized homophobia in him, and I can imagine that even if homosexuality was illegal, it would mostly go ignored by the police. Though it would be comically tragic for someone to get thrown into a cell next to an actual criminal. One's in for murder while the other just kissed their partner?? Gotham's crazy!
If it was illegal, Barnes would do anything in his power to make sure to help the wrongfully convicted. He starts out small by letting them go free on his own, going home in the evening to assure himself that you're still there in his arms, not in some cell. He knows he's already doing so much but what if it isn't enough?
He loves what you share and is very aware of how quickly things could go wrong, so when you ask him to make your relationship public, he's vehemently against it and very confused. "Did someone hit on you? Do you want to tell them that you're in a relationship? Because you have my full support to make up a partner if you want to."
When you tell him that that isn't the case, he assumes that it's something else. "Are you jealous? You know that I love you. I don't think that anyone at the GCPD wants to be with me." He leans towards you and lowers his voice, "But between us: I wouldn't want to be with any of them even if I didn't have you." He even tries to throw shade at his co-workers despite normally being very professional, "Some can be a little..." You smile at his obvious contrition, "Stupid?" you offer. He purses his lips and makes a vague hand gesture, which makes you laugh. He's really trying not to be mean.
Despite the now light-hearted atmosphere, you bring the conversation back to your request, and he gets serious again. The idea might sound naively dangerous to him but you obviously care about it, so he doesn't dismiss it right away. He wants to know whether there's a smaller problem that he can solve. Do you doubt his love for you? Are you afraid of someone taking him away from you?
If any of these is the case, he makes it one of his missions to prove you wrong. Not that he doesn't make you feel loved any other time. He's very thankful for you. But if it's not enough for you, then it's not enough. Feelings are valid...and so is your safety: he doesn't give in.
"Even just the fact that I'm a known police officer could put you in danger", he stresses, "And I can only think in horror of the hatred that would certainly be directed at us for other reasons."
Things continue as they were, until one day when he overhears some officers make fun of Jim Gordon for being called Penguin's bitch - with lots off ugly terms thrown at Jim - none other than Harvey Bullock, the man Nathaniel would have expected at least some homophobia from, defends his partner and gives them hell for the things they said.
"You got a problem with Jim banging a known criminal? That's fine with me, hell, I'd have a problem with it too if it was true! But you target my buddy because he's with a man? Seriously? Your girlfriend doesn't even know you've been looking at someone else, but you're criticising him for being in a consensual relationship, which, again, isn't even real?! Check your morals, man!"
"Okaay, Bullock, chill, I was just joking around. Besides: it's illegal, you know that, right?"
Harvey raises his eyebrows, "Well it shouldn't be." "Careful there, Bullock. Don't want to get thrown out by the captain, do we?" Harvey huffed, "I think he's got a little more common sense than you think." "You don't seem completely convinced." "Ugh, stop it. Get yourself a life. Maybe I'll ask him sometime."
Except that he doesn't. He has neither the time nor the nerves.
Nathaniel tells you the story, promising to work on it, just way slower than you wished. He waits until he heard the next hateful comment so that he could directly intervene, making his already planned speech later seem more natural.
So it comes that he spends more time outside of his office until one day when he heard Jim again, "Doesn't seem like Oswald if you ask me" followed by "Except that I didn't ask you, you fag-" "LANGUAGE", the commissioner's word gets everyone's attention, "like this is highly inappropriate here, any place really. You are police officers, show some goddamn respect!"
"But he's literally called his bitch in the streets-"
"Are we not in a police precinct?"
"Of course we are, sir, but it's also illegal to-"
"And do you not have a brain, detective?" "Sir, I wasn't trying to say that detective Gordon is seriously a f-"
"You're missing the point: hate speech of any kind isn't tolerated here."
"Got it-"
"-nor should you use it at home." He noticed the silence around him. "Have I made myself clear?"
"Yes, sir."
Wow, that felt good to get off his chest! He still needs to make that speech, which would normally be really easy but he doesn't want to make your relationship public or out himself to be honest. He wants to appear completely distanced from the topic, non-emotional, just rational.
When he asks what your ideas are, he's frustrated that something feeling so right, so wonderful, has to be justified at all. He's nervous about the speech: normally he only stands behind the law, and now he's speaking out against it? He's conflicted.
"Why don't you let someone else speak as well?" you try, knowing that he can take on too much work.
"What?" he asks, not wanting to put that burden onto someone else. You shrug, "Let Gordon say some things, he's the one you always complain about being one step away from being a criminal. And you say that he's got people who look up to him."
"No", he protests, "it has to come from someone who has never misstepped."
You give him an unconvinced look, "You have misstepped."
He takes in a sharp breath at the memory. "You killed a man and I still trust and love you, Nathaniel." He looks a little less sceptic now.
"That speech can come from any cop and it will come from someone who at least once committed a crime. I'm not saying that you should let someone else say everything, just that you might wanna talk about it with some other detectives first. Make it appear natural."
The perfect opportunity would come: the time when the crime incidents skyrocket and the precinct has to clean rooms to make way for prisoners.
"Alright everyone, listen up! We've obviously got too little room for perps, so we're gonna have to prioritize."
He takes a deep breath and thinks back to your impressed look at his practiced speech, "From now on, there are a few deeds we will no longer persecute. Not just because of the current lack of space but because they shouldn't be crimes."
He looks at the officers, most of whom don't look extremely bothered, and starts the list, "Anyone here on grounds of consensual relationships to someone of the same sex is to be set free without any entries."
By the end of the list of other "crimes", a few people are looking at him confused, some even angry but not many more than he expected. One officer raises his voice, "So what about that black-haired guy we got in for kissing another man?"
"He's in for sexual harassment!" Jim Gordon comes to his aid spontaneously. "He'll stay", Nathaniel continues, noting that a few people's sour expressions disappear.
"Finally for those of you still unconvinced, who don't have the brains to think by themseleves: before you arrest someone for any of the things mentioned before, ask yourself: would I rather harm one person or save many? A lot is on the line, we've gotten more bombings in four months than in the last year combined. So be smart."
"I'll drink to that!" Harvey shouts and the resulting laughter lightens the mood. That that day more people visit the GCPD captain's office or pass by and say their approval.
It's the beginning of a new time for the precinct and hopefully eventually for Gotham.
However, that still doesn't mean that he likes the idea of criminals knowing that you mean so much to him.
He'll tell some colleagues about you though. They deserve to know what a wonderful partner one can have as a police officer.

How goes your Curse of Strahd campaign? I really love your art for Van Richten! He's my favorite in that campaign module ngl
Hey Anon, and thank you for the compliment! Thanks for asking, get ready for a small essay because I love talking about DnD haha XD I'm throwing this behind a cut so I don't spoil anybody for CoS on accident.
We're on a little bit of a break while our DM does real life job things, but we recently hit level five and cleared Vallaki and the Feast of St. Andral and all that came after it, and we're about to head out to check on the Martikov's delayed wine shipment. Our DM is doing an amazing job fleshing the module out and we love to take our time with things, so we're definitely going pretty slow - the Feast was followed up by another fight that ended in almost every single key player in Vallaki dying (Fiona, the Baron, Victor, and Izek all went down in one big dramatic Shakespearean fight, it was a wild ride). There's a lot of questions still open about the town, like why are our buddies the ravens hanging around the Blue Water and what was with some of the stuff we found in the Reformation Center our DM fleshed out for us, but we're leaving our good friend Rictavio behind to do whatever business he needs to do and keep an eye on things in the meantime. He hasn't told us what his business is beyond "collecting stories" but we're pretty confident he's trying to built a circus in the woods. A totally normal circus. A very normal thing to do. Anyway, we are definitely currently in the process of trying to convince him to come with us when we finally depart the area.
On a totally unrelated note (jk very related), Van Richten is also easily my favorite at the moment and despite the fact that I love all the NPCs we've met so far, even the ones I hate, I don't expect that to change because one of my favorite character types is "salty sarcastic old man who screams at the sky and has A Lot Of Baggage" - plus the whole aesthetic is just A+. This old man really rolled into Barovia saying "time to fuck around and find out" with those shoes and those sideburns, a vibe which is amplified by the fact that our RvR has not disguised himself beyond possibly changing a few facial features and the kinds of clothes he's wearing (we still haven't seen him without the hat on, but my boy Vrinn has Eldritch Sight as an invocation and has narrowed down the general categories and whatever disguise he has on is subtle). The party at large has yet to meet him properly, but Vrinn ,who was immediately obsessed with the old man, managed to get his hands on a copy of Van Richten's Guide and rolled a nat 20 to notice some similarities between the writer and wonderful not-a-big-deal-don't-worry-about-me-I'm-normal Rictavio.
So that's where we're at. Our DM has changed a bunch (for example, he let Vasili be a real Vasili and not a Strahd disguise which added a lot of depth and a really really really REALLY intense dinner where we assumed we were with a man who might be Strahd even though Vrinn has Eldritch Sight and Divine Sense and has used it multiple times and detected nothing, only to have him use both of those while sitting next to Vasili at dinner for a totally unrelated reason because I thought there might be an imp and realize oh fuck they're two different people and I'm five feet away from THE DEVIL disguised as Vasili and have to ACT NORMAL, truly one wild session) and so there's a lot happening that probably doesn't compare super well to other campaigns. I'm currently working on 1 or 2 more poster-style illustrations for our little stint in Vallaki, and possibly some small comics, but it's slow going!

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love 🤍
Acid on the Horizon [Voltron, Keith/Lance & Shiro/Allura, 2017, 29,975 words, rated M]
With Shiro gone and only Keith left, the Jaeger Gridelin Leo needs a new co-pilot. Enter Lance, a cadet Marshal Allura has seen potential in. And far away, on the horizon, something stirs.
The first multichapter fanfic I finished. Pacific Rim Au. I was super proud of myself for finishing this one, and I still think it's pretty good even if it's, you know.. fucking Voltron.
2. Kick the Beam [Dragon Age, Fenris/Garrett Hawke, 2013, 7,823 words, rated M]
Leandra wants Hawke to get married. Hawke, however, is head over heels for a belligerent, broody elf. You can see where this is going.
I remember this being super fun to write, especially Hawke's pov, he's just such a fun character. It's a little old but still a very fun little read.
3. Stitch by Stitch [DC Comics, Jason Todd/Roy Harper, 2019, 17,843 words, rated E]
Jason is injured and finds a safe harbour in Roy Harper. An old teenage crush comes bubbling to the surface, even through Jason's innumerable personal demons. There is also the complication of Roy's daughter Lian.
Still very happy with this one, getting to explore Jason before a tentative rapprochement with the Batfam was great. Fitting pre-52 Roy with Jason was a fascinating puzzle to figure out, and I adored writing Lian.
4. The Baffled King Composing [The Silmarillion, Maedhros/Fingon, 2021, 13,007 words, rated E]
Great deeds have rekindled the dormant flame of hope within Maedhros. With one Silmaril taken back, he is now certain that the Enemy is not invincible. His plan now is to unite all the peoples of Beleriand under a single banner, and together they will all be victorious against Morgoth. The Shadow will be lifted, and the Oath will be fulfilled. And then, finally, he and Fingon can rest easy again.
I am so grateful to the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang for giving me the opportunity to partner up with the wonderful @nikosheba and make something amazing I'm still so proud of. It launched me back into writing properly.
5. Ever Decreasing Circles [Star Wars, Din Djarin/Luke Skywalker, 2022, 112,190 words, rated: E]
His newest (small, green) student has been completely inconsolable, and so Luke Skywalker decides to track down the Mandalorian Grogu calls father, however long it takes. Meanwhile, Din Djarin is coming to terms with the new, painful absence of the most important being in his life, and this damn Darksaber.
This one kept getting bigger and bigger as I was writing it. It's the longest fic I've ever written and I proved to myself I could do it. The urge to go back and edit some bits and pieces is strong (I'll get round to that when I print myself a physical copy) and the way I view Luke changed like halfway through, stupidly, but I'm still like... proud of myself for writing the Romantic Sewer fic and also starting a series which now sits at 176k+ words.

So this year, we're getting yet another GHOSTBUSTERS movie in the re-rebooted franchise, and a new Star Wars feature film looks to shoot later this year for a penciled-in May 2026 release.
I see a lot of skepticism on the internet over these particular developments, and I think a lot of it is rooted - in some way or another - in a legitimate concern. It seems most of the consensus on GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE, and its 2021 predecessor GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, is that it's taking a simpler property way too seriously. Treating it as if it's some serious legacy franchise, that has to be honored to the letter. Like it's... Star Wars!
I have yet to see GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE, I'm actually really not that big of a Ghostbusters person. I had seen the first movie a while ago and thought, "Yeah, that was kinda cool." But that's about it. I didn't remember it having a presence when I was a kid in the '90s. I do know that there was a cartoon airing on Saturday mornings in the late '90s called EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS (how of the era!), but I never watched it. So, yeah... Ghostbusters is not exactly my jam, but I do think there is some overreacting going on here regarding this new movie.
I totally get it, though. GHOSTBUSTERS III stalled and stalled and stalled, and then Harold Ramis - Egon - passed away, so Sony/Columbia opted to just reboot it entirely with a different continuity... And with four women playing the Ghostbusters, only to get greeted with nothing but contempt. Regardless of the 2016 movie's quality, it created this aggressively no-nuance situation where it was this ultra-hated movie (for all the wrong reasons) and that YOU - if you weren't a raging misogynist racist asshole - were morally obligated to LIKE the movie... Regardless of what you thought of it, in terms of its quality. Ya know, script, acting, direction, etc. The movie ended up flopping, so there was no future in this team, though they did appear in an IDW-published comic thereafter.
So, Jason Reitman, son of the franchise's co-creator Ivan Reitman, started a "true" third Ghostbusters that took place in the same continuity as the first two movies and brought back the remaining actors to play the Ghostbusters... Passing the baton to a group of kids, two of which were girls. Sort of treating it all as a legacy brand, which I understand can be annoying to those who feel like GHOSTBUSTERS - the 1984 movie - was at its core a small-scale comedy and not this worldwide thing. At the time, I definitely saw that particular movie as spite. A sort of kowtowing to the angry male nerds who honk "WOKE" like a defective goose at everything. But that apparently was not the case during production, it was just... Ghostbusters is a franchise, and in capitalism... Things *must* continue (facetious), even if it's well past its expiration date. An animated Ghostbusters movie is also in the works, which is being done up at Sony Pictures Animation... And me? I think this concept works great in animation, and after all, the cartoons are an important part of the whole thing so... Yeah, I'll likely see the animated Ghostbusters movie. I think exploring that universe in the animated medium might be a fresh spin on a chestnut property. Heck, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE came off of *three* theatrical live-action iterations of the character, so you never know!
This FROZEN EMPIRE sequel, I'm just indifferent. It exists. Someone will like it, for sure. AFTERLIFE did pretty well at the box office amidst the Delta and emerging Omicron variants of COVID-19. I was working the box office the week it came out, and I had a family come up to me to get their tickets for it... All dressed as Ghostbusters, complete with a homemade proton pack. And I thought to myself, "That's what it's aaaall about."
Tumblr media
Star Wars, admittedly, has gone in directions that I just don't care for. The last movie I genuinely had a good time with in the franchise was SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, which was already a very safe and workmanlike movie. The cast and old school space western vibe save it. Despite what we now know what it's like to work under Phil Lord and Chris Miller (as made clear by the stories that got out on ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE), I honestly would love to see what their version of that story would've looked like... But, we ultimately didn't receive that movie, so... And of course, I really liked THE LAST JEDI. Really liked how Rian Johnson took the franchise, which was becoming well-worn, and cracked it open and took a look at it with a fresh new perspective. And naturally, it was hated beyond belief, and mostly by the usual suspects... I think such a fervent backlash played a part in how Lucasfilm and Disney went forward with this franchise.
So when THE RISE OF SKYWALKER came out, I also took it as spite. Bowing to the angry assholes who just couldn't stomach that the franchise featured people other than white guys and had something more important to say. I was quite pissed off with how they significantly dialed down Rose Tico into a nothing character, instead they gave more time to this new character - whose name I, no shock, forget - who was played by some friend of J.J. Abrams that won a bet during development... Like, what the hell was that all about? Also didn't care for a number of things that just got... Thrown at you. It felt like it was made in panic mode, a Disney-mold please-all movie to end the sequel trilogy and the entire Skywalker saga as a whole. I could go on and on, but I wasn't necessarily upset with developments like "Rey is actually related to Palpatine"... They just come too late and are super-undercooked, all of it in one 2 1/2-hour movie that was following two movies that were saying and building up to something entirely different. The death of Carrie Fisher certainly didn't help, either. I didn't hate THE RISE OF SKYWALKER per se, I was left feeling "whatever"... Like... What the hell was that?
So I didn't bother with THE MANDALORIAN and anything else thereafter, in terms of live-action. And it appears that the Mando side of things informs the franchise going forward. The new movie is called THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU, and that just tells me everything I need to know. I'm curious about the movie featuring Rey 15 years later, that's to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. James Mangold could possibly make something cool out of his ancient Jedi movie, but... Honestly, it's all a big bag of "who cares" to me. With a universe so big and wide, with all kinds of planets everywhere... why does it always have to be about the Skywalkers, the Jedi, etc.? Just give me a Disney+ National Geographic-style documentary about banthas, that would be infinitely more interesting to me. That's why STAR WARS: VISIONS is on my watch-list, like... Enough about the Skywalkers and the Jedi already...
But, Star Wars is owned by big bad Disney. And Disney is going to milk this franchise until audiences collectively get sick of it. Sure, there has been plenty of Star Wars media made before the Disney buyout of Lucasfilm: Comics, video games, novels. It's always been around in some way or another, but I feel Disney just doubled-down on it. Probably because of the abundance of movies made and the amount of shows they're cranking out.
And then I try to place myself in 1977, when STAR WARS first came out. The original movie, before any sequels, before any TV specials, before the added "A NEW HOPE" subtitle, etc....
STAR WARS, alongside Steven Spielberg's JAWS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, are often seen as the end of "New Hollywood" and the beginning of the blockbuster era of Hollywood... And yet, STAR WARS was being made before that all really took off. When George Lucas and his crew were planning and shooting what would become the first movie, how they would they have known what kind of monster it would create? Not just the Star Wars franchise as a whole, but the blockbuster in general. JAWS was the only "blockbuster" at the time of this movie's making, having grossed over a record $130m domestically in 1975. In 1976, the highest grossing movie was ROCKY, with $55m. STAR WARS was one of those movies where it was looking like it was going to be this big mistake, this big flop. Who in 1977 wanted to see some pulpy kid-friendly space adventure movie? By late 1976, the movie industry was still in the era of adult auteur-driven films. Dramas, political thrillers, and smaller pictures that would be called "prestige pictures" today. Films that would struggle to make $50m domestically in 2024, let alone be released in theaters. It was the era of THE GODFATHER, TAXI DRIVER, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR, etc. Isn't it something that those kinds of movies were once regularly the biggest hits at the box office? And you wonder why Martin Scorsese voiced his concerns about Marvel movies...
You look at STAR WARS, and it is indeed part of that waning era of American cinema. At first glance, it's a kids' space adventure movie featuring a WIZARD OF OZ-esque band of weirdos, where people fight with laser swords and there's ships flying around... But it's actually, through and through, a 1970s movie. It's informed by Lucas' politics, the Vietnam War, the Richard Nixon administration... And to think that people complain that the franchise had gotten too political or too "woke" under Disney's ownership? Don't make me laugh.
In a way, you kind of come to realize... Well, this little space movie from the 1970s somehow became the highest-grossing movie ever for a period of time (Steven Spielberg's E.T. took the record in 1982), it spawned two sequels and a few TV specials and cartoons... And tons of comic books and novels and toys... And then three more movies, and more cartoons, and more movies, it's now owned by a massive multimedia conglomerate that wants MORE MORE MOOOOOOORE of it out there... And well... Capitalism. It becomes big, new people take it over every now and then, it's soooooooo far removed from the little anti-Vietnam War space movie it was in 1977 that could've gone down as an embarrassing box office disaster and subsequent cult classic.
And then you realize when it's time to get off the train, and quit going after the wrong people, aiming for the wrong targets. In that, the thing wasn't ruined, it's just so big now that it's not its earliest roots. When I see these new Star Wars things that throw in cameos and try very hard to play to fans who want Star Wars done up in a very specific way, I can't get too too angry... Because this whole "Star Wars, the way you've always loved it" thing seems to fundamentally misunderstand what the original movie, NOT the Original Trilogy, was in 1977. Repeating the past, instead of being someone's unique vision informed by the events of the era it was made in. It became a franchise, but it's okay to say when it's time to cap it off and go watch something else.
I extend this to my current gripes with Walt Disney Animation Studios and the majority of Disney's modern movie output that isn't Pixar, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight. WDAS may never be what it was a few decades ago, it'll certainly never be what it was under Walt's watch. I can gripe all I want about their recent films not entirely doing it for me, but I can still look for the things I like (for example, STRANGE WORLD had some really cool stuff in it, have yet to see WISH all the way through) and hope for the best next time. "The best", as in, a picture I really really dig and cherish. Even if I may not get just that. The reality is, these things grow and balloon way beyond what they started out as, and many different people are now involved, money drives it all, and thus those in charge take it the direction that they THINK is the right direction. It's never easy to guess what it is the audience might want or will like, ya know?
Sometimes things are truly special before they blow up into something else where there's too much money at stake and too many people making what they feel are the right decisions... Sometimes those things can still be special, too...

triggers: dysfunctional families / deadbeat dads
THE BASICS:
full name: charlotte jean wright
nicknames: charlie (she prefers this)
birthday: 1st april 1998 (25 years old)
gender: cis woman (she/her)
sexuality: pansexual
relationship status: very single

charlie was born on the 1st april 1998 in Indianapolis, born to two people who weren't really ready to be parents.
her parents were both very young, they decided to have a baby, to save their relationship but it didn't work.
her dad dipped when she was just a few months old, he couldn't handle the sleepless nights & charlie's constant crying, he didn't even leave a note.
from then on it was just charlie and her mother, which suited her just fine. she was also babysat a lot by her grandma, think gilmore girls but with proper boundaries and things are less dramatic.
you could always find her scribbling and doodling in a notebook or painting on something that she shouldn't aka her mother's living room walls. plus, her hands and clothes were always covered in paint.
but her mother didn't mind, she was glad that charlie had found something that she wanted to do.
art has always been her main passion!! that's always what she'd wanted to do!!
charlie's mother and grandmother supported her dreams and once she'd finished high school, she went off to college & studied illustration.
after she graduated she was unsure what she wanted to do, so she moved home for a little bit. but she was drawn in by the bright lights of new york.
charlie worked her ass off for a little bit and then she moved into an apartment in the bronx.
her apartment is small, cosy, and messy but it's hers and she adores it!!
she currently works for an indie illustration agency, doing graphics for brands, drawing illustrations for kids books etc.
but this doesn't really pay the bills, even though it's her passion. so she works as a waitress as well.
charlie dreams of becoming a comic book writer, when she actually has some free time, she's been working on her own zine.
she's published a couple of copies of it, and handed it out to friends but she still wants to make it big!!

alfred for the character thing im curious! failing that then cass <3
AAAAH MY TWO FAVES <3 I'm gonna do both but Alfred first!!
favorite thing about them
The dadliness of COURSE it's the dadliness. The general idea of how loyal to a fault he is, that he dedicated his life to taking care of this boy he cared for so much, and his family growing in turn, I just cry. I have so many emotions about how underrated Alfred's angle in the whole found family thing is - PLUS I think he has so much potential for emotionally resonate backstory and parallels with Bruce because of that. Do not test me I will break into DC and MAKE THEM let me rewrite Alfred's backstory
least favorite thing about them
Predictably from the last thing I hate it when he gets written as too stuck up to the point of fucking Bruce up even more as a child. Generally the idea of not allowing Bruce to be a kid when he's lost so much just makes me really sad, and I hate any timelines that involve Alfred OR Bruce hitting the batkids in any context :( listen I'm just a big baby I'm hear for camp not abusive family dynamics
brOTP
Oh my god so many. Him and any of the batkids - all of them have excellent dynamics, Dickie literally calling Alfred his best friend is my favorite thing. And of course I love him and Bruce's dynamic, these fuckers have had 1 (one) friend (each other) for going on two decades they are a bizarre little pair. Pure same guy syndrome I love it. Also of course Martha Kent!!!! I <3 want <3 them <3 to <3 be <3 best <3 friends !!! They go on vacation together, they gossip about love triangles in the league, they share casserole recipes, they kick ass. Adore them.
OTP
OUGH I will die on the hill of the Alfred, Thomas, and Martha polycule. I have an ungodly amount of thoughts about their shared history and positive impact on each other's lives and negative impact on each other's reputations but they got through it together,, making the Wayne deaths hurt like hell is my favorite pastime ♥️
nOTP
Only the obvious bat ones, I don't really have any grudges against run of the mill ships for him. Maybe him and Leslie Thompkins? I like to think Leslie is Lesbian, and I think they're coupling is always kinda forced and weird. They are mlm/wlw co-parenting solidarity
random headcanon
He has a passing interest in fashion, costuming, and sewing. He had a lot of fun helping Martha with her outfits, hair and makeup and it was one of the small things he missed when she passed. He was very excited when girls started joining the batfamily (and when dick had a more adventurous sense of style than Bruce). He wears the same thing every day but his kids will look good dammit
unpopular opinion
As funny as it can be (That "I raised a man too soft hearted for this world, luckily my mother can't say the same" post always makes me HOWL) , I really hate the whole 'alfred likes guns' thing. IDK, at least to me he'd have similar hang ups about it as Bruce, his best friends and his child's parents were killed my gun violence, I just can't see him staying into them. I like him better with swords
song i associate with them
Hmmmmm Happy Days are Here Again, especially with this montage from the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The end of this song gives me panic attacks in a good way <3 it's nostalgic and beautiful but also like. Very scary and urgent. Since I associate it with this scene it always gives me those panicked vibes of life getting increasingly more fucked up, like per say, starting as a butler for a loving idealic family, having them get murdered in front of their son, and ending with 9 vigilants on your hands
favorite picture of them
I cannot say enough how obsessed I am with tiny Alfreds in the tnba comics. Also not really a pic of him but honorable mention to "Alfred youre being goofy"

Do you have any recommendation for good yuri manga that's between adults? Not teens? Would you say you are kind, or mean towards your OCs? The difference being how much turmoil and conflict you put them through?
Ooo this ones a fun one since I usually try to consume/read decent adult yuri manga (not necessarily suggestive or nsfw themes)
My best pick would be;
Tsukutabe/tsukuritai onna no tabetai onna/She loves to cook and she loves to eat;
It's a refreshing series about food that i'm glad to recommend without hesitation, currently there are two english volumes that are out and there's a third one that's currently in JP, so I'm just waiting on that.
I'll make a quick synopsis here but Nomoto is an office worker that loves to cook, and she really wants to be able to make huge meals but due to her small appetite, she couldn't finish it so she doesn't do it until she accidentally makes a huge meal to calm herself down after a comment from her co worker that pisses her off. Here comes Kasuga, who is Nomoto's neighbor that she met yesterday, amd notices her large meal that's for herself to eat. This gives Nomoto an idea to ask and invite her to eat the meal that she's made. This in turn allows them to start a new friendship towards each other, and it's a wonderful development, that much I can tell you!
There's also a live action adaptation that's also very well made, that I just keep watching whenever I want to watch something nice and calming, aside from a few differences from the food thats presented from the drama and the manga.
(Also that's probably the only one that i've seen that doesn't use fat jokes in a series that talks about food, especially if you're familiar with any anime/manga, you'll hear comments about it)
Tsuki to suppin/moon and no makeup/Night and day
Another series that I enjoy, it's been on hiatus for a few years now, so it stops at a certain point. Now for this, it's a slice of life series from the beautiful and stunning Akari and the sleepy/bed headed Shiho, although different from their looks, their feelings for each other are the same, which is to make each other happy!
Lit a light
A oneshot manga about a mercenary who's at risk of endangering a storeworker due to repeated visits. As a oneshot, I won't say much but expect gun violence to be used throughout and a bit of food talk, as a bonding point.
Beauty and the beast girl
Okay for this, theres two versions to the beginning of the series; the pixiv and the solo book
The pixiv is the actual start of the whole series. The solo book, the official edition, if I remember correctly as the name, has updated art and small additions that were added throughout, but it's not so different that it differs greatly from each other, but I'd reccomend the official version as the translation better words Lily's words at a certain part, as they're probably the most difference that you'll see from both versions (if its the english one, the japanese, I'm not sure since i can't read it)
Now for the actual story bit; it revolves around a beast who is alone until she meets Lily Blind, who wandered into the forest and into the flowerbeds where they meet and start to converse to each other. After realizing that Lily can't see, she lies about being a traveler and gains a friend. However, after a certain point, she regrets it after hearing about how Lily became blind.
While official publishers say that it goes from 1-12 of the pixiv chapters, it actually goes up to 17, so that's something to keep in mind if you read the official version!
Speaking of; there are suggestive themes from time to time, mainly in the pixiv extras and r18 comics (there's 3 if i remember it right) so thats another thing to keep in mind
I believe this series is the one out of two where there are disabled lead characters in yuri works that I've seen at least treated well enough that they don't infantalize their characters for that. (the other is amayo no tsuki/the moon on a rainy night but that one takes place in high school as teen leads)
Otherside picnic/Urasekai picnic
This ones one of my all time favorite series due to the themes that it presents, through horror and self exploration and coming into terms past abuse that the main leads have faced. It's a sci-fi horror that takes inspiration to Roadside picnic.
There's a novel version that gives a lot more detail to our narrator, Sorawo Kamikoshi and her internal thoughts, which are the main highlights to the novels for me. The manga leaves this out but it should still be a good read, just without Sorawo's comments. The manga is currently at volume 3 of the novel series and the novels are at 8 and its a monthly update so it will be a bit slow if you wait for the manga after finishing the latest update, so if you're still curious about what happens then the novels are avaliable (unfortunately there's no audiobooks so it's something to be read yourself)
There's an anime adaptation but after episode 3, the order of events changes, contradicting each other so it's a bit unfortunate that its the way it is, as it could've been better for an anime adaptation for a wonderful yuri series. The animation is also not great as a whole, as some feel stiff and the use of 3d models could've been better.
Oc's time
I feel like for most of my ocs i'm nice at the beginning until i develop them more and thats where i'll add pain and agony into their character and stories. I feel like the more i put into certain oc's, the more that I'm open to poking fun at them for a bit, such as Rigby, since she's actually the longest I've developed a character without major skips of time from me.
Siomari's my next character in line with that but i actually don't make fun of her, it usually makes me sad since i understand bits from her. (Although this applies to Rigby as well, I'm just more open to making jokes about her for some reason, i guess more pain means more humor into it?)
Simply put; i'm nicer to new oc's and the ones that have more development and have some time to it will have a harder time having a happy life for themselves
(Imagine the Gordan Ramsey image with the masterchef kids vs hell's kitchen)
