i genuinely do think avery loves jameson solely because she so clearly sees them lasting and having a future together. we only have five (more like four bc we dont have ch 4) chapters of them but avery says things like "i could drown in it... in believing we could have it all" and being okay with asking jameson a dozen more times where he got his scar because "someday i'd get the real answer." it doesn't annoy her or irritate her that jameson won't tell her yet because she knows they have someday, that they could have all the time in the world.

avery also struggled a lot with being touched throughout tig. the first time jameson touches her, she notes that no one has ever touched her so gently before. every time someone hugs her or touches her, she has a visceral reaction. she's not used to it. but fast forward to tfg and she's not only okay with having jameson next to her in her bed but also sleeping next to him? she's letting herself be vulnerable with him and trusting him, taking that risk and she clearly finds it to be rewarding. if any of you are emily henry fans, it really reminds me of gus in beach read telling january, "when i watch you sleep, i feel overwhelmed that you exist."

avery never believed in an epic, all consuming kind of love until she saw jameson and everything clicked. when darkness (death) beckoned her forward and she was READY for it to swallow her whole, she heard his voice. then his voice got through to her while she was in her coma when nothing else had. then jameson told her exactly what she wanted to hear, the thing she needed to hear to push her to take a risk, to let herself having everything—for jameson to be her everything and have an epic kind of love.

hiiii!!! i hope everyone is doing wonderful and taking care if themselves, with that said, i hope you like these!

jameson can rub avery’s stomach in just the right way, it gets rid of her period cramps

they make each other those aesthetic, cute, and meaningful gifts when the other is feeling shitty

they tried that “you need a hug” trend when the boyfriend jumps on the girlfriend’s back, and avery fell over and hit her nose (jameson then felt so bad, he gave her so many cuddles and kisses)

they have onesies that are stitch for jameson and angel for ave

they sing musicals together and assign each other characters to play

i hc that ave has hormone problems, so jamie will help her by holding her hair when she throws up, holding her when she gets dizzy, and giving her cuddles (not me projecting again 💀)

in their room, they have a whole corner filled with cute stuffier

they take long drives sometimes and just talk about life and scream sing their fav songs

jameson once pulled ave into a closet (😏) and oren was going crazy trying to find her because he thought she was kidnapped again (they then had to sit through a 20 minute lecture)

everyone online calls them “america’s favorite couple”

jamie loves going shopping with her and he has good fashion taste, so he will help her find outfits

one time at the beginning of their relationship, she got overwhelmed by jameson touching her so she pulled away, and he felt like he did something wrong. she assured him it was ok and she just got overwhelmed so they made a secret tap that ave can do on jamie’s arm so he knoes to let go and give her space (though, she uses the tap less and less now)

at their wedding, jamie cried seeing avery walk down the isle, causing her to start crying and they met at the alter a bawling mess

they always hype each other up and stand up for each other no matter what

since i think it is pretty much cannon that jameson does nascar at this point, before his races, ave gets really scared that he will get hurt, so she will tell him things like “don’t die” and “if you die, ill kill you” and he just laughs and tells her he will be ok

at any event that either of them do, the other always brings them a gift pertaining to that event

ave is SUPER tickle ish, and jamie will tickle her sometimes until she cant breath (she pretends she hates it, but jamie kbows she loves it)

the inheritance games characters at a wedding!

as guests ofc

avery is rich, so she will bring the bride and groom the most expensive and crazy gifts for their wedding. for libby and nash’s wedding, she bought them an island. she’s overall a very good wedding guest, would recommend.

jameson is a wildcard. he will either get bored and leave early or if it’s someone important, he goes CRAZY. definitely spikes the punch at his brothers weddings yk. probs takes off his shirt at some point. do not make him the best man, his speech will be WILD.

grayson doesn’t care much for weddings. he finds them useless and impractical. but it gives him a reason to dress up, and you already know he doesn’t disappoint. dressed to the nines, perfect suit, styled hair, tons of rings or a fancy watch. he’s even more extra and dramatic than usual. he will remind everyone that it is a *blessing* that he’s there.

xander cries at every wedding, no doubt. he’s all jokes and laughs, but at jameson and avery’s wedding, he’s sobbing. but then when it comes time for the reception, he is jameson’s right hand man in causing mischief. he judges the scones/pastries, does crazy dances, and looks hot while doing so.

nash is another ideal wedding guest. he is respectful, mature, knows how to behave. but when nash gets drunk, OH BOY. hes a surprisingly good dancer and if you play hoedown throwdown, he knows the whole dance.

libby personally tries to make every single wedding cake for any wedding she’s invited to, even her own! most of the time, she gets asked to make cakes. libby is also a hopeless romantic and adores the aesthetic of weddings and just weddings as a whole. at her wedding, she def wears a black wedding dress with black bedazzled cowboy boots and hat for nash <3

max is just tagging along for the fun. she’s an even mix of party and maturity. she does get bored easily, however, and will quickly move from one thing to the next. it could be anyone’s wedding but she will be complaining like ‘when does this thing staaarrrrttt??” and at the reception, she mostly eats snacks and makes sure xander doesn’t burn the place down.

He was named Johnathan Tobias Hawthorne

He was born on March 21st at 2:45 in the morning.

Just like his dad, he was a screamer. He screamed so much as a child he was given the nickname screamy weemy. (Not even sure if that is a word!)

Very affectionate with to both his parents.

Even though he has more of his dad's looks of green eyes and lanky frame, he inherited his mother's honey brown hair and button nose.

A rambunctious child, He loved playing outside for hours. If it was a rainy day, the walls would be his best friend. Just like they were for his dad.

He is definitely competitive like his parents are. Sometimes going to the point of being very rough.

He loves being with his dad, but there are times he enjoys spending time with Avery. Reading books with her. Playing chess together.

Max and Xander live with Avery and Jameson in the big house, so Johnathan has some of his cousins to play with.

Hide in seek, tag, sports, playing in the trees, running around through the massive house, and pillow fights, was something the cousins did almost every day.

Even though extroverted, there were times Johnathan enjoyed being alone.

Some of his favorite memories was traveling with his parents around the world. Like Avery, he loved seeing the world. And like Jameson, he can't stay in one lace for too long.

He loves spending time with his uncles and aunts as well. Nash is definitely his favorite. He loves going out riding with him. And Libby makes cupcakes that are to die for!

He was scared of Grayson for many years. Whenever his unsmiling uncle came to visit, he stayed clear of him. He was so afraid of him, that he had a dream Grayson murdered him in his sleep! Crying into his parents room, he said he never wanted to see his uncle again. But after Avery and Jameson talked and calmed him down, he was better, and over time he warmed up to him. But there are still times he is very afraid of Grayson.

His daughter on the other hand.... Johnathan and Caroline are the best of friends and worst enemies too. But in a good way. They argue the most, but love goofing around with each other too.

He knows, and has mastered rock climbing, racecar driving, piano, baseball, bull riding, and skiing.

His favorite games to play are monopoly, chess, clue, uno, ticket to ride, settlers of Catan, risk, and twister. (I don't know why about that one, but he just does!)

He can be very emotional, and a harsh command can send him into tears. Which annoys Jameson very much.

Avery is the one that allows him to cry on her shoulder, comforting him. He find solace being with her.

He hates having Jameson help him with his home work. He prefers Avery since Jameson doesn't do it the right way. They get to sidetracted together.

But playing baseball is one thing he loves doing with his dad. Or taking a stroll with the dog through the estate at night if neither one can sleep.

Even though born into wealth and privilege, his parents make sure he never takes for granted what he has. He respects his elders and even volunteers at homeless shelters once a week.

He is hopelessly romantic, and dreams of having a beautiful wife and lots of children when he grows up.

Do you have any headcanons or short fics about averyjameson saying I love you for the first time?

Well, I don't have a fic although I could make one in good time. But, I can always whip up some headcanons so here you go.

Jameson says it first. It takes so little time for him to be sure that she is the one and maybe he's picked up a bit on Nash's way of going about romance (hey, he doesn't always dismiss his oldest brother; he knows when he's right and has good tips).

Avery is somewhat taken aback and gets shy about it but she knows she's going to say it to him too at some point. He tells her he isn't afraid of waiting as long as she is true and kisses her nose; she gets blushy (yes, even Avery Kylie Poker Face Grambs gets red at cute stuff the guy she likes does).

She takes longer, as expected, since this is her first relationship but somehow is also sure it's her last and tells him firmly after a game of Scrabble on the roof. His smile is the brightest grin she's ever seen and wishes she took a picture.

I really really enjoyed this one! The whole series has been amazing and I've loved going through all the twists and turns with Avery. The Hawthorne Brothers with always have a special place in my heart, that's for sure. Would definitely recommend!

I was sad about Toby having to become a "Blake" but I suppose this was a way to show he was serving a penance or something??

My favourite quote from the books is probably from Jameson Winchester Hawthorne:

"Secrets upon secrets. Riddles upon riddles"

I feel like it's a very good summary of the books and when other parts of the plot were unravelling I was just sat there thinking about how this quote really does fit with the series.

I also love Avery Kylie Grambs as a character. She is so intelligent and is a queen. Her and Jameson are everything. Tobias Hawthorne's very risky gamble indeed.

The only reason I rated it a little below 5 ⭐️ on storygraph was because I felt like at some points I got a little lost as it was a little repetitive, so I loet engagement. However. on goodreads it does not allow for decimal ratings and it was DEFINITELY not 4 ⭐️ so I ended up going for 5 :D

my reasons for averygrayson being endgame:

avery met him first

there’s always been a trend in which the m/c chooses the first love interest // the one first introduced particularly in the ya genre. we’ve seen this with will/tessa, mare/cal, alina/mal (unfortunately) etc. therefore my hope is that j.l.b follows this trend and doesn’t diverge with ave choosing jamie.

she’s also mentioned on twitter the main inspiration behind this relationship is the damon/elena/stephan triangle in the vampire diaries. who does elena meet first? damon. who does elena choose despite having been in a long term relationship with his younger brother, who everybody thinks she initially was going to end up with and preferred? damon. the parallels are so obviously there and leaning in avery/grayson’s favour.

i also wanted to briefly mention the amount of book-equivalent-screen-time (page time if you will) that jameson got in ‘t.h.l’ — this threw me off ngl but i do think it might be a method of 1) appeasing the avery/jameson people, giving them something to be satisfied with romance wise if she does choose gray and 2) we know j.l.b loves a plot twist. what would be more twisty than making everybody think ave prefers jamie and then having her choose gray (there are lots of subtly dropped hints that she hasn’t made any choice at all however so it won’t feel inconsistent with character and plot).

the enemies -> fake dating -> lovers pipeline

no, i didn’t start writing ‘rumours’ (my avery/gray fanfic if you don’t know) based solely on ideas from my own imagination, i have full faith that this is where ‘the final gambit’ is taking avery/gray and why would j.l.b introduce such a plot line you may ask if she’s only going to end up with jamie?? to solve the one problem with the progression of their relationship - grayson’s reservations about hurting jameson (like the selfless boyfriend he is) and thereby pushing avery away at the end of ‘t.i.g’.

what fake dating does is force them into close proximity thereby removing the distance and allowing them to realise and confess their feelings since neither can physically step away from it like they have before.

the hospital bed conversation

we hear what jameson says when avery’s knocked out after the plane incident (is this where he tells her how much he loves her?? not 100% sure haven’t read it in a few months) and we know gray is also in the room at a few points BUT we don’t hear what he has to say because i’m pretty sure ave goes conveniently unconscious while the boys are arguing over her. obviously if it wasn’t important it would’ve been revealed then and there but j.l.b has purposefully made it all mysterious, why?? because he’s probably also confessing his feelings or revealing something about him or jamie that changes the trajectory of the story.

we only see this from jameson’s perspective. obviously he’s going to tell her how he sat by her side the whole time and all that dramatic stuff that will persuade her to choose him — that she’s not a game or a prize, that she doesn’t have to love him (she doesn’t) and on a quick tangent, even as he’s saying this he’s making it into a game?! heads and tails and all that, and the mysterious disc thing he went back for?? everything about him screams that it’s all a competition and a riddle even when he says the opposite, avery even struggles to believe he’s being honest. anyway, back to my initial point, he hasn’t told her about grayson’s side of the story, he obviously wouldn’t, and like i said grayson never gets the opportunity to tell her either. we don’t know how often he was there or what he said outside of the argument she overheard and i wouldn’t be surprised that when we are exposed to his perspective (i think we will be in ‘t.f.g’) we find out he was there to support her just as often as jamie and/or told her something significant too and/or jameson mislead her.

emily and eve

this is a big one. JAMESON IS NOT OVER EMILY. he’s really not, he never has been in the way grayson is and we see this in how bitter he feels over her death and how he constantly mentions her :/, especially in ‘t.i.g’.

whereas gray is very clearly feeling guilty for the way that she passed but THAT IS IT in the way of feeling sorry for her. if any of you have read ‘rebecca’ by daphne du maurier and know the role rebecca plays in her widows future marriage, there is a very similar sentiment that surrounds grayson’s relationship with emily. if you have had the pleasure of reading the extra chapter written in his pov after the plane incident he HATES emily and the way she haunts him. he. does. not. love. her. anymore. even if he does seem obsessed.

jameson hasn’t reached this revelation yet. he doesn’t see her as the monster she was, in some ways he still admires how she played the game and pitted him against his brother (who he still blames btw) and very much has a romantic attachment to her.

what this means going forward you may ask?? eve is already being set up as a double of emily, thrown in to cause drama and potentially be one of the boys’ love interest. therefore if grayson hates emily, then grayson will hate eve. if jameson still loves her, and still loves playing games as we know he does, he will love eve by the same logic, seeing her the same way he did avery — as a game, a riddle, a mystery that is suddenly newer and more interesting. he even tells avery that’s what he loves about the ‘house’ (meaning his family) that just when one mystery’s answered there’s always another, and he will always have a drive to solve it ie. eve comes along as the next puzzle for him to obsess over as it is in his nature.

this leaves ave with grayson, proving that jamie never in fact truly loved her like his brother does and pushes averygray together. we know he’ll choose her over and over again above everybody except jamie, as soon as jameson makes that decision for him, gray will be ready too.

the kidnapping

this leads me very quickly to her kidnapping because the end of this book happens so quickly. thea says GRAYSON NOT JAMESON is hurt and needs avery, to essentially lure her into the passage where she’s kidnapped etc. etc. etc. that says something about how other people view her relationship to both boys. if it was obvious she preferred jamie to everybody else, wouldn’t thea use jamie to panic her because it would make her most likely to help him?? but no. she chooses gray. not the most convincing evidence but i’m just saying - everything in lit is a choice to drive either character or plot.

avery doesn’t love or trust jameson

he’s fun, nobody can argue or deny that he is a great friend to have and definitely somebody avery needs in her life BUT she does not trust him one little bit and i don’t blame her for it. there are points in ‘t.h.l’ when he comes through the fireplace that she feels ‘unsafe’ with him and can we please talk about that in contrast to grayson’s promise to protect her?? there’s a very obvious difference that j.l.b establishes subtly that is very, very important and i think it will come to a point where her character realises the longevity of a relationship with somebody you don’t have absolute faith in clearly has it’s limits.

she also doesn’t ever ‘see him on the cliff’ when she turns around she’s alone the first time max poses the question after she’s kissed gray on tv. when she’s in hospital and asks herself the same question both boys are there (because they’re physically stood next to her) and finally when jamie confesses he loves her she doesn’t ever tell him its reciprocated. she doesn’t even tell him he’s the brother she wants to see most when he asks her and ends up kind of dodging the question and half lying to him.

grayson’s emotional intelligence and jamie’s lack of

jameson, libby, alisa etc. all mention at one point how difficult avery is to read, it’s part of what makes her such an interesting character and a good ‘riddle’. but grayson?? he can read her like an open book.

i’ve defo seen someone else talk about this so if you know who please let me know as this is their theory, but as you may know i am from the UK and therefore have been looking at the british cover for ‘t.f.g’ on which they are stood on a chess board. avery’s shadow is that of the queen ie. most powerful (obviously) but grayson is the king ie. maybe not the strongest but most important. not jamie - he’s a bishop.

i used to be a little bit of a chess prodigy when i was a kid so i know it like the back of my hand and the bishop don’t get me wrong is a valuable piece, but, ultimately disposable, being third most pivotal. i read once that it’s used quite often as a ‘hero’ piece to challenge the opposing team which i thought was quite interesting in this context.

both boys in my opinion have a saviour complex that really needs some working on and, if i’m honest, i think gray more so than jamie so i was a little confused with why he’s not the bishop. BUT i realised that it’s in jamesons nature to be outwardly heroic, he wants attention and recognition for his good deeds (not to mention he is challenging) where gray is much more withdrawn and private, not to mention utterly selfless, so that’s my reasoning if you will.

the obvious point to this though is that the king and queen are a partnership that work to protect each other for the sake of winning the game, therefore avery and gray are going to end up together and essentially ‘winning’.

who doesn’t love emotionally distant, blonde boys? and j.l.b’s previous writing

does aaron warner ring any bells?? great character development, a similar enemies -> frenemies -> one of the most loved love interests in ya. potentially grayson is following in his footsteps. then there’s draco malfoy for the dark academia vibes and although i know he never really had a romantic subplot in hp, it doesn’t stop him from being the fan favourite. apparently there are also parallels with gray and the chosen love interest in ‘the naturals’ (j.l.b’s previous series) in which there was a similar love triangle thing going on so it’s something to keep in mind that she’s made a similar decision before.

i know there’s a lot of evidence in jamie’s favour too, primarily the nickname thing, and i might be completely wrong about all of this but i am convinced that grayson will be avery’s final love interest. if you have any more reasons why/theories please tell me them!! i need so much more reassurance <3

its my n1 girl birthday so here some headcannons/thoughts abt Avery Kylie Grambs <3

- aside from all of the reasons we alredy know, the grandest game was created bc it reminders her of the games she used to creat w her mother on rainy days

- constantly works more than she should or is recommended to her health. to the point other ppl have to interfer bc shes been on laser focus for so long she starts to break (its usually jameson to do so)

- is terrified of fire. like, rl rl terrified she cant even light a match or do anything related to fire (bc of the expl0sion in thl)

- shes a hopeless romantic. sorry i dont make the rules. avery is hannahs daughter and toby said that hannah LOVED fairy tales. avery inherited this part of her and always wanted all of the romantic films that one can imagine, it just used to be kept in a box in the back of her mind bc she was also terrified of entering a relationship and having to open up (when she started dating jameson he realized that, as tig takes place in the real world he cant always do big demonstrations of love, but he does whenever he gets the chance, see averys 18 birthday)

- spaces out a lot. like, a lot a lot. she used to do more bf she inherited bc its her copying mechanism (specially when she wants things) but she still does it

- would love lana del rey (you cannot look me in the eye and say that “National Anthem” is not tig coded) and would also love “guts” by olivia rodrigo (its her album)

- not a hc but shes rl close to the brothers, each one of them in their own way, but everyone knows that shes a honorably hawthorne (the “shes one of us, we protect her” actually became a say btw them, its an unspoken agreement: protect avery above anything else, of course each brother has a way to do so, nash and grayson literally protect her, xander distract her and jameson just do anything she wants him to do at the moment)

she'd be hyperventilating the entire time thinking that jamie was dead in a ditch with no clothes somewhere bc she knows thats a fucking possibility with how careless jamie is.

she would not sleep until she found him. she'd be up with the police or alone looking over all of the clues over and over again. she'd pass out due to exhaustion at some point.

she would smack jamie so hard the second they found him. she would not let him live it up.

she'd be complaining about how incompetent the police (and some of the family members) is and how 'no one can do anything right nowadays'.

she'd definitely be working with grayson most of the time cause two brains are better than one.

grayson:

like i said, he's working with avery bc he's so nervous he can't work on his own without panicking.

he'd stare at the wall blankly cursing jamie for 1. making his life more complicated and bc 2. jamie might be pranking them, and, if he is, grayson will kill him

following the last head canon, he's pondering over what way he should kill his brother.

he's calculating the probabilities that jameson is currently in a strip club against his own will in a thong dancing for old women (he comes to the conclusion that there is a 20.9% chance and everyone is shocked but also thinks it makes sense cause jamie would totally get himself in that situation due to his carelessness)

he made a pillow fort to hide himself in because grayson is scaring the shit out of him. he also made scones and is inviting everyone in for a tarot card reader (skye taught him how to. canon, he said in tig)

he's biting his nails in the back but then starts crying bc he doesn't want to ruin his cuticles.

locks himself in a room and screams in a pillow for 20 minutes bc he's tired of everyone and everything.

It's-a me with a new book series to hyper fixate on

So ehem I just finished the first book of the Inheritance Games (not adding it to my fandoms list until after I finish the series tho) and uh...

(spoilers below the cut)

And the ending though?? Like I WANT Xander to go to Avery and work together because they both have crucial information but I also want him to get the recognition he deserves I will die on that hill.

Jameson seriously gives me Sirius Black + James Potter vibes (idk is that just me 😭). But like 👏🏾 do 👏🏾 not 👏🏾 treat 👏🏾 Avery like a piece in this big game, get over your dead ex and tell her you love her pls and thank you.

But like you know those videos about the best book boyfriends and their nicknames (idk maybe it's just me lmao) but like "Heiress" and "Mystery Girl" and "Cinderella" I'm squealing.

Grayson- okay there's a lot to him. I am in love with Avery's chemistry with Jameson but Grayson's chemistry with her is adorable too (in the first book at least). Like they start nerding out about statistics and probability like I want a man who will not only just judge me but join me as I overanalyze the implications of outfit, song, and set choices in movies or question the bounds of the universe and talk about the possibilities of the fourth dimension thank you very much.

But like, he has suffered a lot, even if nothing is really his fault, he takes it upon himself to blame himself because believes as the all-knowing Hawthorne he is responsible for everything. That being said, he could've been maybe less of an asshole in the beginning like man wdym by "you're injured and you will tell me why." like yes, that amount of dominance is attractive at certain moments but dude just leave the poor girl alone 😭

Nash I relate to on a spiritual level like oldest sibling, knows pretty much everything that his sibling are still trying to figure out, couldn't care less, doesn't care less, etc etc like join the club lmao. Obviously though, being in the Hawthorne family and having three extremely clever younger brothers all competitive in their own way, he's definitely felt undermined before and probably just stopped trying to be better. And I get that, even if I still try to be better than my own younger brother but he's just living his life, razzing up girls as one does lmao.

And his relationship with Libby...don't get me wrong, they're adorable together, like he's persistent in making sure she's secure and stable and his overprotectiveness is well...ehem he wants this things as they are lmaoo. But even so, I'm still a little wary about him because of his dating history but who knows maybe he'll prove me wrong.

Avery's so funny like first thing she thinks about when meeting any of the Hawthorne's (the grandsons I mean) is damn he's hot. And I mean after everything, I just love her, her reactions are on point, she's just trying to figure stuff out lmao.

even though she usually doesn't care about social media and stuff she occasionally makes jameson take those aesthetic pics of her in the libraries at hawthorne house

sometimes at like three am she'll post those instagram stories that are like "ask me a question" and then just do a q&a for like an hour straight

the only thing that she drinks is super sugary coffee and cold ice water (honestly real)

one of the things that she loved doing after she got the money was to go on a shopping spree with max (but only once a year because she always ends up getting frustrated with prices... even if she can afford it)

she does one of those "vouge beauty secret" videos and most of it is literally drug store products because she never switched her skincare routine from before she inherited the money

she has naturally wavy hair but she straightens it most of the time

she teaches jameson how to do different braids and stuff and he does her hair most of the time for events

she wasn't the type of girl to get crushes when she was in middle school/high school

so basically jameson was one of the only crushes that she had since like the 6th grade

she's always super nice to any of the fans that come up to her even if her security is being super crazy about it

she lovessss friends (her favorite character is monica) her and libby watch it together all of the time

she had some kind of harry potter phase in middle school (like it was the only thing that she would talk about

her dream was always to go to universal studios and visit harry potter world with her mom and her and jameson got to go together

Part one of an Inheritance Games AU fanfic of mine.

-Basically an AU where Jameson and Avery are not together. If I continue this, I may put Grayson and Avery together as a side plot, maybe. Not sure. The premise is that the main character, Ashlyn Wolfard is a NASCAR driver for team 29.

“Can I ask you what possessed you to buy a NASCAR team?” queried Grayson.

“Alisa said it was an investment I should make. Falls in the same category as the football team, I imagine.” Avery replied as they walked through the halls of the facility.

 “Well, I, for one, think it’s a delightful idea,” said Jameson, eyes lit up as he took in the sights around him.

 “Your adrenaline junkie nature is simply being indulged at the moment.” Grayson rolled his eyes as he remembered the way his brother drove the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Reading his thoughts, Jamie smirked in response. 

 “Boys, don’t argue,” warned Avery, leading the way in turning a corner. “We should be almost there.” 

 “Where? The garages?” Jameson asked as he got even more excited. He really hoped she would take them there. She had to, right? What was the point of coming at all if they didn’t see the car, the driver, or at least one of the pit crew?

 “You’re still a ways off from those, my friend,” answered a second woman’s voice. Clad in a white, blue, and slightly red racing suit minus the helmet, she emerged from a doorway and shot them trio a friendly grin. “Hello there, strangers! How are you all on this fine day?” She stuck her hand out to Avery.

  “We’re just fine, Ashlyn. How about you?” Avery responded as she shook the brunette’s hand. 

  “Pretty well, I’d say. Who are these fine gentlemen you have with you today?” 

  Gesturing to each of them in turn, Avery said, “These are my friends, Grayson Hawthorne, and Jameson Hawthorne.” 

 “Ah, two of the ever famous brothers Hawthorne! A pleasure to meet you both.” She shook their hands.

  “The pleasure is ours, Miss…” Grayson prompted. 

  “Wolfard. Ashlyn Wolfard. But any friend of Avery’s can call me Ash, or Wolf. Everyone around here does.” 

  “Quite the grip, Wolfy,” quipped Jameson with his trademark smirk. His cool exterior was masking internal feelings of spontaneous combustion and nervousness. There was no damn way…

  “Appreciate it, Jameson,” she tossed back with a lopsided grin of her own. “You here to check on things, or you just showing your NASCAR team off to your friends?” she asked Avery.

 “Showing the boys around a bit, especially Jamie here. Big NASCAR fan. He loves anything having to do with cars, speed, or adrenaline.”

  Grinning again, Ashlyn turned her attention back to Jamie. 

No way…she was really looking at him now.

 “Really? It’s always great to meet a NASCAR fan! Do you have a favorite team?” 

 “Umm, I-there’s a couple that I follow more closely than others. No big deal really.”

 “He’s constantly talking about a number 29. He never misses a race of theirs,” corrected Grayson. 

 “Not constantly, Gray. Not constantly, just sometimes. One of the many teams I like, for your information,” the green-eyed boy argued with his brother, the latter of whom simply rolled his eyes.

 Ashlyn intervened, saying, “Hey, it’s okay,” as she laid a hand in Jameson’s shoulder. “Plenty of avid watchers have a favorite or two. Is 29 one of them? That would be pretty cool for you if your friend happened to buy one of your favorites.” She smiled at him again. 

 Is she ever not smiling? Man, it’s so cute. Wait, focus Hawthorne.

 “Well, yeah, I suppose 29 is high on my list,” he admitted.

 “Awesome! Is Avery giving you a tour?”

 “I was hoping to find someone who could show us around. I’m afraid I don’t know my way around the facility enough to lead a tour myself.” Avery hesitated. “Are you busy right now?”

 “Not particularly. I have to practice later, but not right now. I can take you guys around. How’s that sound?”

 “Great. Where to?” asked Avery.

 Please say the garages.

 “Well, it seems like Jameson would like to see the garages and track, so we can head that way, and I’ll show you anything important along the way. Follow me!” Ashlyn turned on her heel, whipping her hair in the process, and was off like a spitfire.

“That display section was rather impressive, Miss Wolfard. Your number has had a lot of success over the years,” commented Grayson after they passed it.

“Quite. I consider myself rather lucky to be able to continue in such a legacy.” She smiled towards the ground as she said that.

I wanted to tuck the hair that had fallen back behind her ear so I could see her better.

 “Alright Jameson, here we are! The garages.” She opened a door and there it was. The racing beast, the gears of team 29, a great Gen 7. Daybreak was an absolute monster. The team’s and sponsors’ colors decked it out in mainly brilliant reds and blues, with bits of white and yellow here and there. Daybreak glimmered in the sunlight on the track. Pit crew members were buzzing around it, ensuring it was in tiptop shape for practice. Wow.

 “Wow,” I breathed, eyes riveted to the busy scene unfolding in front of me.

  “She’s something special, isn’t she?” asked Ashlyn. Her rich brown eyes sparkled as she gazed at Daybreak lovingly.

  “Yeah, she is. Daybreak, right?” I asked. 

  “Yep. I’m assuming you know a little something about her?”

  “As much as any other self respecting fan. One of the newest Gen 7s, fitted with top of the line, some unique features and equipment.  She’s also one of the only race cars to have two seats and not only the driver’s seat. Despite that, unrestricted, she can reach some of the highest speeds of any other car.” I pause. “The other drivers must be pretty damn jealous of you, Ashlyn. I know I am.” I shrugged. Was that too much?? Crap.

  “Yeah, that’s right about the car. You really do know your stuff, Jameson! As for the other drivers, we can only go so fast in the races, so all’s fair in love and war, as they say.” A look passed over her face. “Um, I’ll be right back,” and she walked over to someone holding a clipboard near Daybreak. They talked for a minute while I looked toward Avery and Grayson. They were as confused as me. Then Ashlyn started walking back with a big smile. 

  “I need to loop the track a few times. Does anyone want to take a ride with me?” The offer was to “anyone”, but she looked at me practically the entire time she said it.

  “Really?? Do you mean it? Would it be okay??” I couldn’t contain my excitement at this.

  “Of course! I cleared it with the boss before I offered. Who’s up for it? I know you are, Jameson. Avery? Grayson?”

  Avery tilted her head slightly, then replied, “Well, why not?”

  There was an awkward moment of silence as we looked at Gray. I wiggled my eyebrows and smirked at him, an unspoken dare. He rolled his eyes in response, followed by a sigh. “Fine. I suppose we are in good hands. As long as you’re careful, Ashlyn.” 

 She smirked, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “I make no promises.” She laughed when Grayson’s eyebrows shot up at her joke.
