I’m slowly getting back some of my start-of-year getting-my-life-together energy back and I reorganized my bookshelf to be in a color gradient because that inspires people to such heights of rage. I think it looks nice. (Definitely made easier by the fact this is a small fraction of the books I actually own and that the bottom shelf of this bookcase is a bit more chaotic.)

My sort of maybe embarrassing “late to the game” thing I’m learning now is how to tell if oil has gone bad.

I feel like most other foods have obvious visual tells like mold or they end up smelling foul and obviously bad. But I was googling about oil and the internet says “if it smells like crayons, it’s bad” which would not have been my first guess. And I tested it out on my somewhat old sesame oil and was like “by god, I would describe this as smelling like crayons”

Anyway protip if your old oil smells kinda like crayons it’s probably no good 🖍️

people want to make a video essay, but nobody has any fucking critical thinking skills or any amount of charisma that makes sitting through hours of them speaking with pictures sometimes popping up bearable. stop talking like the burger king foot lettuce meme with extra awkward pauses between words that shouldn't have an entire minute of silence between them. it's okay if you can't talk for an hour about whatever "niche topic" you want to ramble about. it's fine! ramble away for 30 minutes! Absolutely do NOT pad out the run time simply to justify calling it a deep dive! not everything needs to be a deep dive, or even "deep"!

look, i get video essays take a LOT of time and i love and respect anyone who puts themselves out there and decides "i will type out, record, and edit an entire video about my favorite topic, X" because that's leagues more work than I will ever do. I'd rather type it out here, or force my friends/family to listen to me. I don't have it in me to record and upload for the internet to see. for that, every person I'm criticizing is still above me in that regard.

But also, I get so fucking annoyed when I realize that video essays about a niche topic I'm interested in, or a tv show I have a lot of nostalgia for, is just a summary for an hour minimum, followed by thirty minutes MAX of the creator justifying why I sat through and watched them hand-hold me through a series I already watched. There are people who can do that and I enjoy it and didn't notice/caer, but I just- I'm at a point where for every one person I find who CAN, I had to get through 3-5 people who...I hate to say it, but really CAN'T.

i used to be so good at writing strong, thoroughly-researched, thoroughly-edited essays.

as a kid in hs, my teacher literally came up to me, holding my 40 page essay on the intersection of the European witch hunts and capitalism/exploitation/gender roles (it was supposed to be 7 pages...whoops) and went like "this is literally a master's-degree level thesis. what are you doing?? you could literally use this as your final dissertation in a master's program, what the fuck."

NOW??? NOW?? you'd think I'd be oh so skilled. but alas. i can barely piece together two ideas. adhd skill-regression is so so real. im SOBBING
