I’m a new writer-director finishing up film school and I keep getting into little spats with some of my instructors over my characters talking too much/for too long.

My stock response at this point has basically become “Well, it works just fine when Mike Flanagan does it.”

I don’t know if it’s because I come from a theatre background or what, but I really don’t like the seemingly common wisdom that characters talking—actors orating—is boring for audiences. That you have to have Something Happening all the time, and that characters “just” conversing or telling a story doesn’t count, as though “to speak” isn’t a verb.

Since you tend to have characters speak at length and it turns out riveting—I’m thinking specifically of the confetti speech from Hill House and Hassan’s speech about being a Muslim cop in NYC from Midnight Mass—I was hoping you could share some of your thoughts on balancing action with conversation, giving actors room to “just” talk, and keeping lengthy oration engaging.

I also come from a theater background. I wouldn't be too hard on your instructors - in fact, they sound like they're pretty in sync with a lot of executives in the industry.

I received similar feedback when I was a film student. My first few student features were very talky. We were studying the breakthrough work of Kevin Smith, Spike Lee, and Jim Jarmusch. The indie movies that were selling at Sundance and hitting theaters were The Brothers McMullen and Chuck and Buck. Tarantino had hit the scene and his characters were dropping pages and pages and pages of thick, unhurried dialogue. Reservoir Dogs posters were hanging on every dorm room wall on campus, and that movie was essentially just a long conversation. We watched My Dinner With Andre in class. So yeah, most of our student films were emulating that.

I have always loved a monologue. Going back to Robert Shaw's hypnotic story in Jaws, to Harry Dean Stanton's jaw-dropping monologue in Paris, Texas. It's an art form. Giving actors room to speak, to find music in dialogue, to transport a viewer just with mere words... that's an incredible feat, I think. It's some of the oldest magic left.

That said, I've always tried to balance that out. It's a visual medium, after all, and whenever I've found myself leaning too hard on the words, I've tried to counterbalance that was a very ambitions visual sequence, a long unbroken camera maneuver, or something else that honors the difference between filmed entertainment and theatre.

One of the reasons I made Hush was to challenge myself to eliminate words from my arsenal and focus on visual storytelling.

I take a fair amount of flack for my monologues and dialogue, first from studio executives and then from a small percentage of viewers whose attention spans are being challenged. The most common note I get on any project is to take out talking. It can be disheartening, but I'm always trying to be fair about it, and to be sympathetic to the fact that a lot of movies and television have actively tried to shorten viewers' attention spans for decades now. Audiences are being trained for things to happen faster, louder, shorter. What good is your amazing 6-minute monologue if people changed the channel two episodes ago?

There are times when it is more important to me than others. I dug in hard on Midnight Mass, where the words and ideas in those soliloquies are a big part of the point of the show... but on The Midnight Club, I didn't push for it. I kept scenes relatively short, and there isn't a monologue to be found.

But my overarching feeling is that an artfully written and well performed monologue is a gift, and a dying art. It celebrates great acting, it requires great trust of the performer and of the viewer, and it has the power to transport us with one of the oldest magics human beings ever discovered - the spoken word.

Storytelling began that way: monologues around a campfire. Over the millennia, we've harnessed that campfire light, we've even learned to paint with it, to pull our dreams out of our minds and put them onto giant screens, so the whole world can dream together... but the real magic still starts with the words.

Which is my long-winded way of trying to encourage you to make your films the way you want to make them. Make the films you want to see. And if you love words... that's a great thing. Try to find a balance, never lose sight of the visual medium, and if you're going to drop a big chunk of words in there, try to earn it with something visually challenging as well.

Or, just tell your instructors you'll make it shorter, and then cut out ten frames of air. ;)

He survives the events from the movie and we're also left traumatized since we saw him almost die and every now and then we stare at his scar and try to not think back to that day :( and we're trying to hide our tears from him :(

5) So in the book, they had to go to Morioka, not Kyoto. So that sparked a scenerio in my head. After tan hangs up (it's the phone call before they meet with the yakuza, that scene) : we say "We're stopping at Morioka though, not Kyoto." "No it's Kyoto, love" "No, the destination says Morioka." We show them the details we were told, and we all start to realize there's something wrong. (Ignore the fact that we didn't tell them 😘😘)

So, for a good....maybe 87% of my life, this one specific scene from the 90s animated sequel movie "Fievel Goes West", has lived rent free in my head. And thing is, despite that I have not actually sat down and WATCHED the film as an adult. And. I finally saw a clip of it on YT and well...just look at it.

No but really look at it. Look at this brief comedic 'hero training' montage clip, and you realize this simple, cute little family blockbuster sequel, had WAY much more mind-blowing effort put in than it ever had to.

-To start, that clearly is the famous classical music piece "Hoedown" being used to inspire the soundtrack here, but it's being made somehow almost even more triumphant and fast in a span of under a minute.

That kind of 'cleverly deliberate homaging classical well known songs but not so much it's obvious or a ripoff' scoring takes a compositional genius. You don't know it's even in there til you listen for it! Exactly as bone-chilling good to listen to as the original and as much now as it was decades ago. My brain was shocked that it still evoked shivers, watching a fat orange cat doing rope tricks. Speaking of which-

THEY DREW THIS. And PAINTED ALL THIS.

Every single bit of it OVER. AND OVER AGAIN. BY HAND.

Watch this clip again, slowed down. Watch all of this cat's many tiny fur tufts and fat rolls, and the wrinkles and expressive motions on this sheriff dog character. Someone had to draw all those moving around. They never had to. Who is the madman responsible for this. It wasn't some iconic Disney legend like Milt Kahl, and we know Do .Bluth was not here, so who the hell was it!

-The whiskers on Fievel and his tail being unnecessarily curled and punching IN TIME TO THE SONG as he is rooting his friend on.

-All these 'mummy' ropes, and the shadow on them.

-The shafts of light and the falling dirt and cave water drips at the beginning when Tiger prances about mockingly in the mine tunnel entrance.

-At 2:17 the bottle glass all reflecting OUR view of Tiger then shattering and the smoke on his slingshot and the excessively cool way Tiger twirls it around and then pockets it like a gun, complete with "action movie/fancy anime fight" style camera panning round and down his body in towards the holster.

-Look at the part at 2:06 with the punching dummy, from the clouds of dust and tiny straw bits that fly out when Tiger hits it, to all the different camera angles and the way they chose to bounce from third to first to third person again: look at when Tiger rushes up at the scarecrow with a pitchfork. They add 'camera shake' as a way to simulate the off balanced way he as a fat, clumsy, but now highly enthused excitable character specifically would run!

-ALL THOSE FEATHERS

They drew the movement of ALL THOSE FUCKING ***FEATHERS!!!!😱***

This isn't even a major scene. But it's taken so thoroughly seriously. This is pure art. This is pure gluttonous showing off. That is brilliant. I really cannot believe how strong this lives up.

Spring started as Flug entered the esteemed halls of P.E.A.C.E.'s academy. Looks like his forgery skills really benefited him much more than he expected. He looked around the assembly hall and saw a sea of new freshmen taking pictures, teasing each other, and talking to one another. This place really was like those scenes in the teen movies, but this time, it was in real time. It was like a dream and a nightmare for Flug, however, though. Not only was there thousands of soon to be heros here, he needed to watch what he says and not slip up or else he would be going to jail and he wouldn't be able to get his pilot licence. It would have been an absolute loss for him in this scenario. As he was looking at his notes while walking to the crowded, it was a very fatal mistake. He bumped into someone, knocking him backwards. He looked up and saw a good-looking and muscular man with brown chocolate hair. The man was clearly a jock like his old classmate Metauro. He covered his face as he saw that the man was raising his hand. He waited for the impact, but it never came. "Hey, hey, you didn't really expect me to hit you, now did you? Here, let me help you up.", a slightly deep yet sweet voice told him. He looked up and saw that the guy was trying to help him up by offering a hand, "S-sorry, I really didn't mean that..... are you OK?", he asked as the guy chuckled. He looked at the man who was clearly amused by his reaction, "Am I OK? What about you? I'm pretty sure I should be the one asking that since I am the much bigger person between the two of us.", he said as he wiped his happy tears away. Flug scratched the back of his head 'Shit, he's right.... It looks like pure souls really come here to become beckons of light, huh?', he thought as he looked directly to the guy's hazelnut brown eyes. Then a finger snap brought him back to reality, "Wha-? Huh?", Flug said, startled, "Looks like you spaced out there, buddy. Are you a freshman?", the guy asked.

Flug nodded akwardly, "I see.... no wonder you're lost. Well, you're in luck! I'm actually a senior from the hero program. I'll tour you. Oh, right? I haven't told you my name yet. Nice to meet you, I'm Herbert Leth. You are?", the guy said with a huge smile. Flug gulped and shook the guy's hand,"Kennings Flugslys.... Nice to meet you too, Herbert....", he said as he quickly released Herbert's hand. Herbert then casually put his arms around Flug's shoulders, "Kennings, huh? Nice name! Unlike mine...", he grumbled, "Anyways! Come on, Kenny. I'll give you a tour of the place. I'll also give you some advice about some academy secrets that people here don't really talk about, too.", he said as he winked at Flug. Flug blushed since this has been the first time he was shown this type of attention before, at first meet too. Herbert also seemed to have guessed his nickname. Flug was then dragged by Herbert everywhere. From the assembly hall to the school gym to every classroom. Flug panted, Herbert sure had a lot of stamina. They had been walking nonstop for an hour now! Herbert looked at Flug and chuckled, "Looks like someone need to work on their cardio.", he said while patting Flug's back. Flug also chuckled at his comment, "Big talk for a trained hero who can most likely throw a whole building at someone.", he said as he stood up and they continued to walk to the boy's dormitories.

Herbert then looked to his side and saw someone. He scowled and let out a 'Tsk.' sound. Flug raised an eyebrow and looked at the direction Herbert looked at. There, he saw a tall, long-haired man with forest green eyes. Out of curiosity, Flug asked, "Woah, who is that handsome devil? He looks like Jean De Morter.", Herbert looked at Flug clearly unimpressed by his reaction. "That's because that is Jean De Morter. But I'll tell you this once Kennings, he's a vile, narcissistic, posh bitch. Don't even bother talking to him.", Herbert said his voice laced with annoyance. Flug was a bit unnerved by Herbert's negative reaction to Jean,"I see....", he muttered as he continued to follow Herbert to the inside of the dormitory. Though Herbert wouldn't say it out loud, Flug could feel that Herbert was pissed. He didn't know if it was him asking about Jean or Jean himself but he felt obliged to try and lift Herbert's mood up again, "Y-you know-w I think your q-quite handsome t-too. Well, not like Jean handsome but y-your own kind. Hehehe.....", Flug said, trying to hide his face, clearly embarrassed. Herbert's footsteps stopped, "Hahahah!...... you really think so? Do you really think im handsome too, Kenny?", he said as his face came close to Flug's face. Flug's face reddened like crazy and he nodded, "Y-yeah.... also scientifically, you're also very attractive. Sharp cheek bones, perfectly shape almond eyes, a-and if I took a meat cleaver down your face, it would result in matching halves.", Flug said, explaining Herbert's best facial features. Herbert's frown turned into a smile hearing those words of compliment. He hugged Flug tightly, "I see. Thank you, Kenny..... I never realised how.... attractive I was. Hehehehehhe.....", he said, smiling widely at Kennings. Flug smiled back adorably, "Glad to make you realise that, Herby!....."

The two began there classes over the next few days. Flug was taking his time to study properly and thoroughly for his pilot licence. One day at the canteen, while he was sitting eating, he felt a pat on his back. It was Herbert! "Hey Herbert! How's things going on the hero program?", he asked as Herbert sat down with him clearly exhausted. Herbert placed his head on the table, "Exhausting. They weren't kidding when they said they were gonna push us past our limits.", he said as he showed the red rope lines on his arms. Flug was startled, "What?! What type of training is this?!..... Feels like their torturing you guys...", the smaller male said as he searched his bag for an anti-inflammatory cream. He then rubbed the cream on the red lines on Herbert's skin. Herbert smiled, "Thanks... but it is for the best. So that we can be great heroes. Also, can I ask you a favour, Kenny?", he said as his brown eyes looked at Flug's. Flug titled his head, "Yeah, sure, what is it?", he said concerned for his new friend. With a smirk and a desire, this would be the start of a very messy friendship that will shape both men's future.

overall i really liked the 1st two episodes. a few things i liked:

it really felt like star wars like it felt like they were trying to connect to the original source material especially aesthetically and musically. my husband lost his shit when they did the scene transition like the original star wars movies.

i thought natasha liu bordizzo truly did her homework on this one. the way she delivered her dialogue in her very first scene, i was like she IS sabine wow. probably one of my favorite parts of the series so far.

also it hit me like halfway through the second episode that pretty much every character is a woman? this is truly a show about women, but not in a pandering way where it's like "look guys!!! we included women!!!" and then proceed to do nothing with them (cough cough rose tico). i love it so far.

CHOPPER. that is all.

a few things i wasn't crazy about (don't get me wrong i liked the episodes):

the timeline was a bit confusing for me and my husband, who have both watched rebels multiple times. at first we thought it took place after the rebels epilogue because they kept citing sabine's training with ahsoka, which never actually happened in rebels. but it seems like between ezra's disappearance and the rebels epilogue, sabine trained with ahsoka, and then in ep. 2 of ahsoka we get the rebels epilogue.

i didn't really want sabine to be force-sensitive. i know she trained with the dark saber but it wasn't because she had shown any sort of ability with the force. interested to see where they go with this one.

so far, rosario dawson falls kind of flat for me as ahsoka. i feel like there isn't enough emotion in any of her scenes so far. i didn't mind it during her cameos in mando/tbobf because she was supposed to be a somewhat mysterious side character, but now that she's the main character it just didn't fully work for me. older ahsoka is supposed to be wise and mysterious, but she was also generally outgoing and kind. hopefully that changes as we see more of her.

You are correct, Donatello is my favorite turtle in every iteration. I love an unhinged scientist.

But Raphael in all iterations is so important. And in every iteration he has the softest heart and the biggest feelings.

I did write a post a while ago about how my feelings on 2003 Raph had changed as an adult. As a kid, I didn't like him all that much because he always seemed mean and angry and loud. But now I understand that anger and how he acts tough because he's a big softy. He doesn't like to be vulnerable, so he acts brash and mean. He buts heads with Leo because his emotions are so big and he can't keep a cool head when his heart's on fire. He's a very passionate kid and he keeps an eye on his brothers. I think he knows them a lot better than they think he does. One of my favorite moments for him is actually the episode with Mrs. Morrison. He cares about people and he's really a gentle soul underneath all that attitude.

2007 Raph breaks my heart. I know a lot of people took his attitude in that movie out of context and misinterpreted it to hell and back. Raph doesn't hate Leo, he missed him. Leo is their big brother, their leader, the one who was supposed to be there to guide them. When Splinter sent him away for training, they expected Leo to come right back after his time was up. But he never did. He didn't say anything. He never came home. Can you imagine that betrayal? How much that must have hurt? Leo is always the opposite for Raph, usually as the cooler head to Raph's heated temper. But Leo was gone and as far as anyone knew, he wasn't coming back. And Raph just had to watch Donnie run himself into the ground trying to keep them together. Watch Mikey try and keep up a smile when there was a big gaping hole in their family. Watch while all the scum in New York started getting ballsy again because no one was out there knocking heads. So when Leo finally comes home and acts like nothing's changed, of course it pisses Raph off. Of course he's angry. His big brother disappeared without a word, and then has the fucking gall to show up and expect them to fall back in line, for things to carry on as usual, for it all to pick back up again right where he left it. But it can't. Because Leo was gone and that drastically changed things. And Raph's so angry and hurt, probably feels betrayed and abandoned. His brother just fucking left them behind. The dialogue before their fight on the roof in the movie hits me hard every time. Raph's letting out all his pent up emotions, all the frustrations and hurt is spilling out of him, and that line, "We got along just FINE without you!" Goooooodddddd that scene kills me every fucking time. And how pissed at himself he is when he realizes what he's done, how terrified he looks when he realizes how much he damage he could have actually done. How much he probably hates himself for it. I really, really wish we'd gotten the other movie(s?) that had been planned for 07. I wish we could have had more time in the 07 movie to explore how things had changed between the turtles and how they had to figure out how to work together again. 2007 are MY turtles and I love them with my whole heart. They also break my heart when I think about how messed up their family ties must be now.

Rise Raph is kind of like a breath of fresh air. I love that Rise took a chance and changed up the dynamic of the turtles and gave them a chance to show off in ways other iterations really hadn't allowed. I think Raph being the one to shoulder the responsibility of leadership forced him to mellow out and learn how to control his temper. We still get glimpses of that Raphael temper, and I really love that it especially shows up when Leo's the one needling him. It's always been Leo and Raph butting heads and that doesn't change in Rise, the nature of it just shifts a little. Rise Raph being the biggest and oldest, learning how to be gentle where his other iterations never really had to. Rise Raph is a sweetheart and he wears his emotions on his sleeve just as brightly as every other Raph, they're just in a different color. He's a big guy, with a big heart, and big emotions. I love that he's big enough to hit as hard as he promises to, I love that he uses that to do exactly what every other Raph has always done--throw himself into harm's way to be a shield for his family.

And I know you didn't ask, but I'm just gonna take a second to mention Mutant Mayhem here. Because, my gosh, those kids are about to go through it, I'll bet you anything. Somebody book them a farmhouse, we about to watch Shredder wreck their shit. MM Raph is a riot. This kid has been cooped up in the sewers his entire life, with his paranoid brother hovering over his shoulder. And the second he's finally let loose, he goes off. And I love that for him. We haven't seen a lot of that classic Raph temper, but the kid's definitely got a lot of energy and emotions inside him. I hope the show gives all of the turtles their own individual arcs that let them grow, I hope we get to learn more about them. Because that's one thing the movie really lacked, was fleshing out their personalities and letting them be individuals. I'm really looking forward to what Mutant Mayhem has in store for us.

Overall: AWESOME MOVIE! The animation and art style is to die for. If they release an art book I am preordering that shit asap. I was laughing so much throughout the entire thing. The emotional moments hit too (if yk yk). And the FIGHT SCENES. DAMN. The animators understood the assignment fr.

(Btw, there is a mid-credit scene that is veryyy important for the future of this universe. Don’t miss it.)

He is so cringefail and lowkey pathetic (rizzless Leo is canon)

But at the end when he pulled through and he got all excited AAAA it was adorable

They comment a lot on how Raph is always angry, but he wasn’t rlly? It was more enthusiasm and aggression, not outright anger. Not a complaint just an observation

About Splinter, I rlly enjoyed his storyline. It’s made rlly clear how much he loves the turtles and how hard he’s trying. But the movie actively called out his behavior without making him a villain. Bravo.

Speaking of villains, Superfly slapped. Mans was intimidating, cool, smart. Rlly liked his and Splinter’s parallel arcs

Kinda iffy on the whole ‘they learned ninjitsu through media’ thing.

I hope that in the show they can touch on that. Maybe show that they’re training is incomplete and have them improve their skills with a proper teacher

I think my only other nitpick is that the other mutants don’t have enough moments to shine. They def make do with the time they have and it works, but I would’ve liked more ( Bebop and Rocksteady specifically)

Splinter making out with a mutant cockroach was not on my 2023 bingo card

I had tons of mixed feelings about that ending. But the mid-credit scene saved it

I think the turtles being “normal” kids has potential to be explored. I’m not against it

Now lets talk about April and Leo

It’s not explicitly stated to be canon. April going to prom with Leo felt like it was framed to be a casual, just friends thing. And I rlly hope that’s what they were going for.

Do I ship it? No.

I’m glad that Leo and April didn’t rlly end up together. Because it would’ve been super unnecessary and forced. Nothing I got from the narrative or message suggests that a romantic pairing helps the plot. I despise the ‘girl is clearly not interested but ends up with guy anyways’ trope and I’m glad that it kinda wasn’t there?? Again, it wasn’t super clear. But nothing romantic between them was shown at the prom or anywhere else so I’m going to choose to believe it’s not canon.

IF THAT WERE TO CHANGE depends on the upcoming show.

If the show has a well written, healthy, and developed relationship. I’d be all for it.

Just please do not pull a 2012 again. I saw that meet-cute ik what you’re trying to pull writers you better tread carefully.

And speaking of 2012; when you’re gonna introduce Casey Jones (i say when because yes), if you’re going to try the whole April love triangle thing again, at least make it funny. You managed to make rizzless Leo entertaining I’m sure you can do the same here. Just don’t make it as annoying as Capritello was in 2012 learn from your mistakes

Better yet, pull a Spiderverse and subvert expectations by making Casey an absolute bro to Leo. Idk, be creative with it.

Ya know, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the expedited aging factor from mutation and wondering how they might use it more in Mutant Mayhem/Tales of the TMNT…

Idk if many people caught it because it actually took me so many watches before I started thinking about the aging timelines of the turtles and the other mutants despite being mutated at the same time and age(ish), but it catches my attention every time I watch the movie

I started wondering why Superfly and his siblings were all already adults while the turtles are still teenagers. Plus, Splinter regales that he was in his early 20’s when he was a pre-mutated rat. And yet when we see him mutated 15 later older he seems to already be more in his 60’s or 70’s with his white hairs and massive balding and less teeth, not like someone who’s actually only in their mid to late 40’s.

And it finally hit me. “Because I was older, I became older rat man. You guys was babies, so you stayed baby turtle creatures. If you think about that, it couldn’t make more sense!”

For the longest time this line kind of struck me as strange because it seemed Splinter was simply explaining that he stayed older than them in his mutation, and that they stayed babies of course. Which like, that’s obvious. Why have a line about it? It finally hit me that Splinter said he became an older rat, not in relation to the boys, but to his age pre-mutation. At first when he mutated he still looked pretty young, and in the Eye Know montage we see him develop his huge curly fro, then become the bald, whiskery white-haired rat who needs glasses by the time the turtles are done training. The mutation aged him up at a faster rate somehow and the line clarifies that, but that it had no effect on the turtles.

Which means it also affected the other mutants that same way, because they’re strangely closer to their own age group more in the 30’s or 40’s maybe.

Not to mention, there are varying levels of strength too. I mean Superfly is the toughest mutant around and dude was on that level since he was a baby. Rocksteady couldn’t even take him on and it was literally a rhino against a super buff fly lol. Maybe there’s something to be said about the fact that he’s the oldest too/the first one mutated. And strangely, when the blue “de-mutantizing” goes into his bloodstream he’s turned back into a regular fly looking more like how he did as his baby self 🤔

Maybe the way everyone was exposed to the ooze had varying effects on each of them. Superfly and his siblings were experimented on and created much more intentionally, seen floating in their canisters of ooze in the beginning scene. The turtles were exposed slightly more indirectly, and then Splinter even further removed with how little ooze he was exposed to. It does seem that between all the mutants there’s varying in age; Superfly as a baby was very astute and calculated, while the turtles were still hardly aware of much going on around them when the vial of ooze had splattered all over them. But it’s also harder to tell the exact ages of babies.

This whole aging element is something completely new introduced in this version of turtles, and honestly you have to question what led the writers/creators to make such an interesting change. I’m so excited and curious to see them explore this factor in the future and why it works the way it did with Splinter, the older mutants, and not the turtles. I think they could do some really interesting stuff with that change.

THE WAY ONE OF THEM SIMPLY FALLS IN LOVE WITH ANOTHER MAN AND FEELS COMFORTABLE ENOUGH AS A WOMAN TO FORGET IT WAS ALL MEANT TO BE A DISGUISE. THE FUNNIEST OCCURENCE OF BRAND MARKETING IN A MOVIE I'VE EVER SEEN. HOT WATER BOTTLE AS A BOOZE STASH. WITH ALL DUE RESPECT, THOSE TIDDIES.

THE FIRST TIME I HEARD OF THIS MOVIE HAD BEEN ON A GIFSET OF THE FINAL SCENE HERE ON TUMBLR AND IT STILL HIT ME LIKE A TRAIN WHEN IT CAME.

THIS MOVIE'S SO GOOD I WANTED TO REWATCH IT THE MINUTE IT WAS OVER.
