Fukuzawa Yukichi is a man of few words. This makes whatever he says all the more important and heavier in weight, and even the slightest hint of his true feelings was noticed by anyone.

That is, anyone but you.

“It’s because you’re too subtle,” Ranpo once said to him. “At this rate you’ll only ever be a friend to Y/N.”

He wasn’t wrong, Fukuzawa knew that well, yet he just wasn’t programmed to be bolder. You’ve been friends for so long that he was genuinely afraid of what you’ll think of him if he tried to be more honest about his feelings.

You handed out a keychain of what appears to be a cat in samurai clothing. He smiled softly as he accepted your gift, not just because he appreciated the gift but also because his heart fluttered at your last sentence.

You and a mutual friend of yours went to a feudal Japan themed park over the weekend before you left the country for a few weeks. It wasn’t unusual for you to hang out with close friends one-on-one even in far trips like this, but…

“Nao-kun even said it looks like you,” you chuckled. “Don’t look at me like that. He’s the one who said that, not me!”

Fukuzawa wasn’t annoyed at the comment itself. His mind had wandered to that one thought he’s been suppressing for some time now.

Haven’t you been hanging out with him a little too frequently?

Sure, he’s the one who always invites you to these little escapades. Sure, you think they’re just friendly “dates” (why do you even use the term?) as with any other person. But what if the day comes when he invites you as something more than a friend? What would you do?

“You should just ask Y/N out. It’s not that hard!” A little imaginary Ranpo exclaimed in his right ear.

Fukuzawa ignored the tiny menace and focused on your stories about your weekend. Your soothing voice and bubbly excitement were enough to squish the nuisance to oblivion.

It’s always somewhat bothered him that you yourself never asked him to go out with you – even just as a friend. Aren’t you close? You’ve had wild adventures alone with people who were barely acquaintances, but the most you’ve ever invited Fukuzawa to was for drinks at a fancy bar after a long week. Did you just not like him enough?

“Which reminds me,” your tone suddenly changed, snapping him out of his thoughts “Are you free next Saturday?”

No, no he wasn’t. Morning ‘til night he was swamped. “What for?”

“I was thinking that maybe we should go watch that movie you were talking about last. Dinner’s on me, too! I feel like I owe you this much, plus I’m not going to see you for some time after I leave this Sunday.”

The little imaginary Ranpo popped up beside his ear once more.

“Damn that’s unlucky.”

“Be quiet.”

The rains were pouring heavier than ever.

The windows were being battered by water and wind and the steel skies made noon seem like night. That meant no difference in Fukuzawa’s workload, however, and he continued to read and sign papers like usual.

The tea Haruno had just placed before him would cool down faster than normal, he had to remind himself. There’s no enjoyment in drinking cold tea that tastes like lead.

The noise from the storm outside grows louder yet for Fukuzawa there was a sort of comfort in it. His thoughts eased by the warm tea felt secure; it was as if only he could hear them. Not that many people could (even Ranpo sometimes doesn’t get what he’s thinking) – nevertheless, he let his mind and heart wander together for a moment.

You had promised to keep your Saturday free just in case his would turn up free as well. Since then he’d been hoping that somehow his meetings would just disappear, yet it seems that even if that did happen the heavy rains prevented any “date” from taking place at all.

His eyes landed on his untouched phone. Would it hurt to ask if he could meet you once more before you left? It was already in the middle of the work week and you must have already made plans with other important people in your life. As much as he didn’t want to intrude, he just couldn’t resist the desire to meet you again. He just had to. Even if you were just going to grab something quick to eat. Even if it was just a short walk to the station. Even if it was just for a single passing moment.

He was afraid that he might never see you again.

“President,” Haruno knocked and peeked inside. “I’m here to confirm your schedule for the rest of the week until the next. Some clients rescheduled their meetings…”

She continued to explain things for him, scribbling on the clipboard she placed on his desk. His mind barely took in any information but one portion stood out to him.

“They wanted to move it from Saturday afternoon to Tuesday morning…”

As she finally ended her rundown of the next 7 days’ schedule, he glanced once more at the portion for this Saturday’s activities.

“That means there’s nothing by Saturday afternoon?”

 “Yes, sir.”

The moment she left, he quickly picked up his phone and dialed a familiar number.

Fukuzawa prayed unusually hard that morning. Please let this afternoon be spared from the storm, he begged, or else the trains may stop working and you’d have to cancel. Not now when he put in the extra effort and anxiety into today’s affairs.

He bothered to wear something a little different. Still the usual yukata but the fabric and colors were slightly more refined. One would assume that he simply had an important event that night and not think about it twice. But of course there were some who knew the truth.

“Don’t worry too much about it, Boss.” The real Ranpo surfaced from the Agency’s couch. “It’s gonna be fine.”

Fukuzawa grumbled in response. The weather wasn’t the only thing that was unpredictable, he thought, and it’s not like he had much experience to prepare for this in the first place.

“As long as you’re honest it’s gonna be fine,” the detective repeated.

But could he really be, given that he’s been trying to hide these feelings for so long?

So far, only the warm sun and sparse clouds filled the bright sky. Now he was waiting patiently for you to arrive at the garden you wanted to walk around at. It had a traditional sort of arrangement, one which he very much liked. He wondered if that meant you had chosen this place out of consideration for him but he quickly dispelled the thought the moment his heart began to latch onto it.

Fortunately, his mind didn’t have to wander for much longer.

“Yu-kun!”

You waved your hand as you ran to him, not at all worried if you slip on the pavement. The uncontrollable thrill at seeing him in a setting like this had made your legs move faster than you thought they could.

“D-did you wait long?”

“Not at all,” he replied, a small smile present on his lips.

There weren’t as many people in the garden as he had hoped. Just like the weather, things seemed to be going well. Too well, even. Your conversation was nothing short of meaningful and pleasant, and the scenery had only heightened the experience.

Suddenly, a drop of water tickled your nose.

“Is it drizzling?”

Before either of you knew it the rain began to fall. With only one umbrella at hand you two dashed for the nearest gazebo, both of your garment almost getting completely soaked by the sudden downpour.

“I guess dinner will have to wait…”

Your eyes were glued to the skies but your mind was fixed on the man beside you. Without him saying a word, you could tell he was beyond disappointed. That was the last thing you wanted from the person whose smile you wanted to see the most.

The shame clung to you more than patches of your wet clothes.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“I should have-“ the words got caught up in your throat. Now was not the time to be emotional. “I knew this might happen and yet I chose this place. I’m sorry-“

“There’s nothing to apologize for. It’s not your fault.”

His low voice was softer than usual so you had to scoot over closer to hear him. The rain had dampened not just his words but also his temperament, it seems. But had you moved an inch closer you might have noticed the conflicted yet bashful expression on his face.

“There’s… something I’ve been curious about since I called.”

“Yeah?”

“If I said today were to be a proper date, would you have come?”

His eyes remained focused on the grey sheet covering the garden, yet his ears were still attentive to your small gasp. He wasn’t ready to look at your face let alone your feet from the embarrassment. Strange how even at his age his entire body managed to react so violently.

“I-“ Your lips struggled to form the words your heart had been screaming since the very beginning. “O-of course I would.”

Finally, his head slowly turned to face your own. Surprised eyes met gleeful ones, and soon they all softened just the same. For several silent but serene moments, only the sound of the pouring rain and beating hearts filled the space.

“Can I ask you something, then?”

“Of course.”

“If I asked you out on a date after I come back, would you say yes?”

Your cheeks began to turn scarlet the moment you spoke and only darkened when he chuckled lightly. This warmer side of Fukuzawa felt so surreal to you that if he hadn’t gently grazed his calloused fingers on yours, you might have thought this was all a dream.

“Yes I would, without question.”

I've read that article about the romanticization of the Darkling and while I absolutely understand people who are pissed off/sad and I agree that it's shitty, I find LB's attitude towards Darkles stans very funny in a "girl what are you doing" sort of way because it's so petty like I've never heard of a bestselling author writing a portion of their fans into their books as a crazy cult before, it clearly hit a nerve

I'm new to the fandom but the feeling I get is she wrote something problematic ten years ago and became very embarrassed about it afterwards so she turned on the fans that liked it as a way to absolve herself. Especially since fandoms in general have become a lot more focused on discussion of what constitutes healthy/acceptable relationships to write about. And in a way I get it I had a huge Twilight phase in high school and afterwards I was super embarassed about it because of how problematic and cringe it was. But now with distance and more maturity I'm able to both still see why it was problematic and also why I was drawn to it (mostly the very unhinged representation of female desire) and like...it's really not the end of the world and no it never made me believe that breaking into somebody's room at night to watch them sleep was actually ok in real life lmao. This feels so obvious to me but apparently it needs to be said.

And of course it's good to have these discussions about how historically romance tropes have echoed social dynamics of men's shitty behavior being romanticized and excused. But these days they often are so simplistic and focused on chasing clout that they become this weird new puritanism and moral panic about oh now women are reading novels it's going to make them hysterical or something

So you have these weird assumptions that you can't like a character and also be critical of their actions, or enjoy certain parts of a character and not others, or wish they were written differently and like them more for their potential (which I'm sure stings a bit for an author lol) - it assumes that if you like a character it means you would approve of their actions in real life, or that people just stupidly reproduce whatever they see on TV. That tendency to treat fictional characters like real people is the thing that actually worries me, to be honest, because it indicates a lack of distance and critical capacities regarding how stories are used and received. But people - fans and authors - are so scared of being called out as problematic and harassed for it that they're going to shy away from any nuance.

And yeah I think that it's good that standards of what constitutes an ideal relationship are evolving and becoming more feminist and communicative and all that and we definitely need more of that. But not all fiction has to be aspirational! Sometimes you just want to read about fucked up shit, because it's cathartic or fascinating, even healing at times because with fiction you are absolutely in control and can choose when to close the book. Toxic relationships in fiction can have an appeal specifically because they go to extremes of feeling that we don't want to go to in reality, in exactly the same way as horror movies or very violent action movies - which I don't see a lot of people besides fundamentalist Christians argue that they turn you into violent psychopaths (and that feels very obviously sexist). And for women, who are often taught growing up that love is the purpose of life, the "saving someone with your ability to love" can be a power fantasy in the same way that being a buff superhero who saves the day with their capacity for incredible violence can be a power fantasy for men. Still doesn't mean those women are going to fall in love with actual murderers or that those men are going to start beating up people at night. And love is scary, and weird, and weirdly close to horror at times, with all the potential for loss of self and being vulnerable and overwhelming feelings and potential for being horribly hurt and it should be possible for stories to explore that without anybody screaming about how this is going to Corrupt the Youth or something

And I mean I get it LB wanted to write a cautionary tale for teenagers, but it just did not work for reasons a lot of people have already written about - the fact that the Darkling is the leader of an oppressed minority and is the only one with a real political agenda to end that oppression in the first trilogy, the fact that he helps Alina come into her own power while her endgame LI is someone she keeps herself small for, that she's shamed for wanting power after growing up without any, a generally very wonky conception of privilege, and a lot of other stuff with yucky regressive implications to the point where stanning the villain actually feels liberating and empowering which is a surefire sign that the narrative is broken (unless it's a villain focused story lmao). But of course that Fanside article makes almost no mention of the political dynamics, it's all about interpersonal stuff which is an annoying trend in YA, there are those massive events happening in the background but it's made all about the feelings of the hero(ine) ; war as a self-development quest (which is kind of gross). Helnik is kind of an example of this too - I like them, I think they're fun ! But Matthias spends a big part of the story wanting to brutally murder Nina and her kind, and he mostly changes his mind because he finds her hot. Like you don't feel there is some sort of big revelation that his entire moral system and political framework is completely rotten ; it's all better because of feelings now.

As a teenager that kind of sanctimonious bullshit would have annoyed the hell out of me ; I read those books in my early twenties and I found the ending so stupid I wouldn't have trusted any message or life lessons coming from them. And I liked reading/watching dark stuff as a teenager, as a way to deal with the very intense inner turmoil I was dealing with - and I turned out fine ! Meanwhile I've seen several times women in very shitty relationships being obsessed with positive energies and stories ; they were so terrified of their life not being perfectly wholesome they ended up being delusional about their own situations.

Like personally I think the Darkling is a compelling, interesting, alluring character and also a manipulative, murderous piece of shit and that Alina should get to punish him (like in a sexy way) - but he's also the end result of centuries of war, oppression and trauma and reducing that to "toxic wounded boy" feels kind of offensive ngl ESPECIALLY since the books don't offer any kind of systemic analysis or response to oppression beyond "the bad guy should die" and "now the king/queen is a good guy our problems are solved!!!!"

In Lives of the Saints, we see how Yuri is abused extremely badly and almost killed by his father, and so when his father dies when the Fold swallows Novokribirsk, he thinks the Starless Saint has saved him. Later in KoS/RoW he's turned into this fanatic who explains away all the Darkling's crimes. The other followers talk about how the Starless Saint will bring equality for all men. Then the Darkling comes back and actually thinks his followers are pathetic, which feels again like a very pointed message to his IRL stans. Which is absolutely hilarious to me. Like oh no, if he was real he would not like you and think you're pathetic ! Yeah ...but he's not. Real. Damn right he would not like the fics where Alina puts him on a leash. I'm still going to read them. What is he going to do about it, jump out of the page ? Jfjfjjdhfgfjfj

Anyway I think the intended message is "assholes will use noble political causes for their own gain and to manipulate people" and "being abused/oppressed is not an excuse to behave badly." Which. Sure. But that's kind of like...a tired take, honestly ? A big number of villains nowadays are like this ; either they've been bullied as kids, or they're part of an oppressed group, or they have "good ideals but too extreme". This is not surprising because a lot of mainstream heroic narratives present clinging to the status quo as Good and change as chaotic and dangerous. And like sure in real life people often do bad shit because they're wounded and in danger. But if you want to do a story like that, you have to do it with nuance, talk about cycles of violence, about how society creates vulnerable people to be exploited, about how privilege gives you more choices and the luxury of morals, etc. The Grishaverse does not have this level of nuance (maybe in SoC a little bit but definitely not in TGT). So it kind of comes off as "trauma makes you evil" and "egalitarianism is dangerous" and "if you're abused/oppressed you're not allowed to fight back". And ignores the fact that historically, evil generally comes from unchecked privilege.

I guess my point is that there are many things I like about LB's writing, she knows how to create these really exciting character dynamics, and the world she has created is fascinating. But these stories are not a great starting point for imparting moral lessons. And her best characters tend to be, at least in canon, the morally grey ones. I hope one day she'll be at peace with the fact that she wrote the Darkling the way she did and leave his fans alone but in the meantime I'm just not going to take this whole thing seriously I'm sorry

Sandrone

Always monotone. Which, as his creator, I'm legally obligated to say I speak exactly like him about 80% of the time. Very dull, monotone, steady at all times. It's annoying! Or at least, I've been told. So, yeah. That.

Ohm

Puts his work first always. Those who know him only know a small smidge of the work he does and it would seem like there's no way in hell he has SO much work regarding that one section. But yeah, he's a workaholic who does just.. a lot.. behind the scenes.

B. Best: What is your OC’s best personality trait?

Sandrone

He's very observant! He can be dense regarding romantic stuff of course, but other things he's hella in the know. Sulien remembers or notices everything somebody he cares about says or does regarding things they like. So yes, he will always have your favourite takeout and snack ready before you even realise how sad you actually are. He knows.

Ohm

Like youngest like eldest I suppose. Ohm is also incredibly observant. Ohm is a bit more annoying with it because he will know you're injured even if you try to hide it. But beyond that, he's like a dog. You're sad? Cool let's go do something! Literally contradicts his above annoying trait but I mean, Ohm is weird as hell, he manages too many two faced traits. Anyways have a lollipop.

C. Child: Your OC encounters a crying, lost child. How do they react?

Ooh.. He's confused.. Sulien doesn't do well with people crying in general, let alone kids. He's had some practice with Tartaglia's little siblings, but that's not very much. He's kind of a yk criminal, so he'll probably bring the kid to the nearest location that looks like it'll be able to help them find their parents. He won't stick around for all that long, he's so awkward.

Ohm

He is on a fucking mission. Ohm is a doctor, he's a very good doctor, he's crouched down talking calmly within seconds. Always has lollipops on hand for this, and for himself, but mostly this. The kid's hand is in his while they're chewing away happily within moments. Then he'll find the parents, and they WILL get scolded on losing their child. Captain Ohm is not pleased ):<

Yes. He does. A natural infiltrator, Sulien is known as a betrayer for a reason. Merely a job for the most part, a business transaction if you will. All relationships can be sacrificed in exchange of Freedom. He doesn't care. Sulien is tired, he has few friends as is, sometimes people need to go.

Ohm

No. Because betraying a friend for what he desires means to throw away everything he's ever signed his own life away for. Ohm can't do that, no matter how much he craves Death or Peace. One is obtainable if he makes a mistake and the other is unobtainable. He'll get there in the end without betraying somebody.

E. Excellent: Which of your OCs is the most virtuous?

This one will surprise people who don't as intimately know their stories. I mean come on, you have the Medical Captain of the Knights of Favonius vs a Fatui Harbinger, right? And yet, Sandrone is the more virtuous. Curious, isn't it?

F. Forgive: How good is your OC at apologizing? Do they own up to it when they’ve made a mistake? How easily does your OC forgive other people?

Sandrone

He's so condescending without meaning to be.. Mostly because the times he's apologised, it's been while arresting or killing somebody and he's saying sorry for betraying them. He makes an effort once he's realised he's hurt somebody he cares about, stumbles over his words, but he'll try. He always owns up to mistakes though, especially since he makes so few and he needs to be a good impression to his subordinates so THEY don't make any mistakes. It would depend on what they've done to him. He doesn't forgive nor does he forget sometimes.

Ohm

Very good! He's a fantastic liar :D! Ohm knows that sometimes to appease people, you have to do what you must, and he's a king with words for a reason. Another one who leads people and needs to show up as a good leader, Ohm always owns up to his mistakes. There are though.. Some things... In his personal life that he's only ever told two.. maybe three people.. Those mistakes.. They run so deep. Hurt too much. Ohm may be a very forgiving person, but he never forgets. Never.

G. Guilt: Does your OC often regret their decisions? If so, describe a decision they regret.

Conditioned to not feel, he ignores things like regret or guilt. He isn't programmed to feel them. He can't afford to. So it isn't often that he'll regret a decision. But when he does, he thinks about it forever. What he could have done better, what would have changed the outcome, he's supposed to be the best in his field at analyzing any given situation and yet.. Sulien just thinks too much sometimes.

Ohm

A lot of the things he has done he regrets, even if he deems them necessary to choices to make. I suppose Ohm is interesting like that, outwardly, he keeps going, keeps pushing forwards. Inwardly, it's a constant blizzard of guilt. I've always likened Ohm to a man damned, so his feelings about his decisions and the guilt he feels when he makes a bad one definitely fits into that.

H. Honesty: How often does your OC lie? Do they believe lying is ever justified? Describe a time your OC told a lie, or told the truth even when it was difficult.

Sandrone

His job is to lie. Head of Reconnaissance for the Tsaritsa, the puppet's function is to infiltrate what he needs to in order to gain the information he needs. Always adaptable, moldable, he's a liar at any given time. Even if he'd rather tell the truth, he never does, in Her name everything was justified. To tell a time he lied would be just looking at his work history. To tell a time he told the truth even when it hurt, would be more interesting. To compromise; in /almost/ all of his voicelines, he's actually telling the truth. Try and figure which are actually the lies..

Ohm

Ohm is clever, cunning, his personality handcrafted, perfectly put together piece by piece. Unlike his younger brother, Ohm is a natural liar. It comes easy to him, every honeyed word spoken from a tongue of silver. He has sins to hide and karma to beat back, if that means lying? Well. So be it. His most obvious lie that's revealed throughout his story quests would be that he's almost never on expedition to a nation for medicinal supplies, but rather he was infiltrating Snezhnaya to try and find his brother. A lie very few people knew the truth of, most notable being Varka, who gave his approval. Some hard truths are better off buried for Ohm Ambros.

I. Individuality: Is your OC’s morality more influenced by the society they live in, or their own critical thinking?

Sandrone

I mean... I'll just be honest, Sulien got tortured into utter compliance by way of forcing him to forget everything he ever knew. He's smart as hell, but if he has no frame of reference, then yeah... It's influenced by the people around him, his environment. Sulien is getting better about it though.

Ohm

His moral code is a roulette wheel and he's not sure where the bullet is. But hey, it's fine. Literally, I have nothing else to add. Ohm kills people, like, straight up disposes. But he's also a very nice man, so..

J. Jealousy: How often does your OC get jealous of other people? Do they keep their jealousy in check, or does it influence their behavior?

Both of them aren't very jealous people, one because Sandrone doesn't even fucking know he's jealous. And two, Ohm is just kinda dense unless someone is like.. uncomfortable, then he'll notice.

K. Knack: What is something your OC is skilled at?

Sandrone

Sulien's skill that I like to talk about the most is the fact he personally repairs his mask(and other things) with Kintsugi! It requires a lot of patience and technique and he is very good at it. Takes him forever though ngl.

Ohm

He loves his origami. He's very talented with it and can make pretty much anything. A lot of stuff he can do either one handed or without looking, but the more complex stuff he actually needs to concentrate on. He has a nasty habit of folding his briefing papers into cool little pieces.

L. Loathe: What qualities does your OC loathe in other people? Do they tend to be judgmental of others, even when it isn’t warranted?

Sandrone

He doesn't like super whiny people. It's just a personal pet peeve of his, he'd rather not. Like the whole high pitch "hmf!' kind of whiny? Yeah. Despises it. Otherwise Sulien isn't very judgemental! He's pretty respectful in general.

Ohm

Lmao Ohm is a hypocrite. He dislikes people who are reckless and put others in danger. He'll willingly put himself in danger, but not his team, which is the only real difference. It's weird, he's best friends with Kaeya and yet- ahem anyways. Call it the Doctor Vibe or w/e.

M. Mistake: Describe a time your OC did something bad, or was wrong about something.

Sandrone

War Criminal! Congratulations! He was behind the scenes making sure the sigils of permission were done correctly. I mean, he's a war criminal in general though. Personally, good dude. His work? Mm.. He's done things!

Ohm

I can't even be like "this dude killed two people when he was fourteen! that's bad!!" cause it was sort of warranted. I think, to Ohm, his biggest mistake would be "failing his parents' one task to him" which was to protect Sulien. And he failed to do that and lost Sulien for pretty much eleven years. It haunts him constantly.

N. Negative: What does your OC believe is their worst flaw?

Sandrone

Sulien has a bit of a thing where he hates how emotional he can get. He's been equated to machine so often that when he feels, he doesn't feel real. He dissociates and he hates that feeling. To him, it is his worst flaw. The puppet being emotional? What's the point? But he also doesn't know how to express his emotions in a healthy way, and I think it makes it all that much worse when he feels so strongly sometimes.

Ohm

Somebody who has a low outlook on themselves, there is very little Ohm likes. Though his inability to feel like he belongs or perhaps the karma attached to him would be the worst ones. To be haunted by demons, among other things, it is utterly ridiculous to him. And yet, here he is. How one can find comfort in somebody like him is just, beyond him.

O. Outlook: Is your OC more optimistic, pessimistic, or realistic? How likely are they to believe a bad person can change?

They are both Realists. To take a situation upfront and deal accordingly is who they both are at their core. Sandrone is more likely to believe somebody bad can become good, because /he/ wants to be good. Ohm is less likely to believe this, no matter how much he may want it to be true. But at the end of the day, products of environments that were so truly unkind, they are both realistic of the grim world around them.

P. Positive: What does your OC believe is their best personality trait?

Sandrone

For some odd reason, Sulien thinks how blunt he is at times is a good personality trait. I mean, like, I guess? He believes it at least. Sulien just thinks that being blunt is a good way of dealing with things without any communication problems or misunderstandings, and that's true to an extent.

Ohm

A man bound by contracts, it'd be how dutiful he is. Diligence is the name of his game, ultimately. He's been doing this since he was a child, he better be good at what he does, and he is. He always fulfills his duties, always does his role, always plays his part. His work is who he is.

Q. Quirk: Does your OC have any (minor) bad habits? If so, what? (Biting their nails, sleeping in, procrastinating, etc.)

Sandrone

Honestly most of his work takes place at night or the evenings, so he usually sleeps the day away. It isn't the best for a person, but he does what he must.

Ohm

Due to his insane alcohol tolerance, he definitely drinks way too much. But it never really hits him...? So he just kinda drinks those lil fruity drinks of his cause he likes the taste haha

R. Respect: What qualities does your OC admire in other people?

Sandrone

Honesty. He admires honesty the most. Sulien has been lied to a lot, had things taken away from him that nobody should ever have taken away. He just wants somebody who will tell him the truth, even if it hurts.

Ohm

Surprisingly, Ohm likes people who are resourceful, a little bit cunning maybe. He likes people who are useful to him, and being useful means being able to think fast on your feet.

S. Success: Describe a time your OC did something good, or was right when others were wrong.

Sandrone

Most of the time LMAO bye. Sulien functions on one perfected line of code. "Analyse the situation, filter what is appropriate, narrow the results, speak." He tells Pierro straight to his face that he's a better information gatherer because "the difference between your recruits and me lies within step three." He's not often wrong, the other Harbingers hate him for it.

Ohm

He does his best to do good things to make up for all of his bad karma. A doctor, a captain, an adeptus. He sacrifices his own vitality to heal others. I mean the list goes on. He tries, very hard, to make up for the things he's done.

T. Troubled: Which of your OCs is the most flawed?

They're both flawed in their own ways that I can't really compare them.

Sandrone was broken down into bits, had literally every sense of self or shred of dignity stolen from him, and then he was turned into a tool and used time and time again. That trauma will never go away, nor the problems or flaws that arise from it. Then you have Ohm, who was forced onto a path of bloodshed and slaughter in the name of Celestia. A pawn that has lost everything, everyone. Who failed, time and time again, and has to live with that, with himself. That also doesn't ever go away.

And I think to compare them would be unfair. Especially when the more they learn of each other's pain in their separation, the further they fall into that guilt and pain for their twin. They always blame themselves for what happened to the other.

U. Upgrade: Does your OC strive for self-improvement, or are they less concerned about becoming a better person?

Sandrone

He does what he can with the circumstances he's in, if that makes sense. There isn't a lot that Sulien can do to change himself or the things around him. But he tries to learn better life skills(like cooking) or pick up new hobbies and stuff like that. He really does try though.

Ohm

I don't think that Ohm sees the value of self-improvement. He knows he isn't a good person, and I think he knows, deep down, that he can't really change that.

V. Value: Is your OC more selfish or selfless? What would they sacrifice for a loved one? What would they sacrifice for a stranger?

Ooh they're so similar haha.

Sandrone

Selfless, he is always doing what other people want. His opinion always comes second. For a loved one? He will lay his life down. For a stranger? Well he'll do his very damn best if the situation calls for it.

Ohm

Selfless, following a set path laid out in the stars before him, he has no choice. Fate has called and he has answered, what he wants does not matter. But put his loved ones in the firing line? He'll die before they do, he can guarantee that, and he has the power to ensure that. An innocent stranger will receive very close to the same treatment, too.

W. Worst: What is your OC’s worst flaw?

Sandrone

He accidentally gaslights people a lot.. Like he lies to lie at times because he's so used to it? And if you've never been gaslit you are so lucky, its such an awful feeling. A lot of the time when he does it to people he cares about, he really doesn't even notice. And I think that's pretty much his worst one. I mean and he kills people but w/e.

Ohm

He's self destructive. It's such a big part of his character and just who he is and it shows a lot about who he actually is. Ohm can't stand what he's been pushed into doing and yet he continues to do it. He'd do anything to wash himself of these feelings and it leads to incredible self destructive behaviour. He also kills people but w/e.

X. X-ray: Does your OC believe that they’re a good person? Would you consider them a good person?

Sandrone

No, he doesn't believe he's a good person. I, as his creator, know that he's a genuinely good person put into a bad situation and forced to make bad choices to survive. He just doesn't see it that way, he can't, he's been conditioned to believe whatever they need him to believe to get him complacent.

Ohm

Also doesn't believe he's a good person. And I, as his creator, know that he's bad at his core, but he tries so hard to do good things. He wasn't given a chance, not really. He tries to make up for it, tries to cleanse his sins, but that blood never washes off..

Y. Young: How has your OC been influenced by their past? Are they a better person because of their past, or a worse one?

The answer is the same for both of them. Heirs to a clan favoured by Celestia, paths set in fate, destinies controlled by stars. They are influenced by things even further than their own pasts. Sandrone was allowed to forget his past, forget who he is, and what he means. Is that good? Is that bad? Who knows. But when he did remember as a child, he was very much influenced by it. Then Ohm, well.. Past mistakes and failures are who he is, right? The last thing he remembers is his father's words too him regarding destiny and given how ingrained that is in their family line. Well..

The past means everything to them.

Z. Zealous: Does your OC have any guilty pleasures? If so, what? (Watching reality TV, drinking soda, reading cheesy romance novels, etc.)

She-Ra S5 E08 - Shot in the Dark

There might be spoilers for the rest of the season in this post!

I absolutely LOVE this episode, and at first, I couldn’t really put my finger on why I liked it that much. And then Noelle tweeted this:

And yeah, that’s what it boils down to. This is the first *happy* Catra episode since... basically since “Once Upon a Time in the Waste” - and back then, the happiness didn’t last long.

(I also just think that story of AJ being so worried about Catra and Noelle reassuring her with every script is so adorable. I love to see how much they all care about these characters.)

Now let’s get into the episode!

- “Why does space hate me so much?” Yeah Glimmer, as I’ve said before, your powers don’t work in space because otherwise things would be way too easy and this show would be over way too quickly.

- “So, your plan is to, what? Ram through an armada of ships?” “No! ...Maybe!” 😂 I love Adora.

- The way Catra’s hands are shaking when she tells Adora they’re going to get caught... oh, baby 😢. And how Adora suddenly looks so worried... gosh, these two.

- Catra and Adora playfully arguing over whether or not Catra ‘defeated’ them in the past is so cute. I love this kind of ‘former enemies’ bickering and it’s why I was so glad they didn’t wait until the very end of the show to redeem Catra.

Bow: “Adora, Catra’s right.”

[Everyone’s eyes go wide.]

Bow: ... “That felt weird to say.”

😂 Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. Bring on all the ‘former enemies’ bickering, please!

- So, is this just because Wrong Hordak’s “brains were scrambled”, as Bow put it, or do all the clones randomly blurt out that Horde Prime has a weakness whenever they hear someone ask about it? I’m going to assume it’s the former. Also, the way he keeps blurting out more and then denying that Krytis exists is super funny.

- I like how they set Krytis up before with Catra having visions of it back in Taking Control - still pretty convenient that just hearing the name lets her make the connection, but I’ll take it. (Is it meant to be some lingering effect of being connected to the hivemind that she’s having visions of it again now, or is it just her remembering what she saw before?)

- I love the detail that Darla’s information on Krytis is locked and they need administrator clearance to access it. Shows again that the First Ones aren’t that different from Horde Prime - they were also ashamed of their failure to conquer Krytis and tried to hide the information on it.

- “In- In- In- Incorrect. It is located nowhere, because it does not exist, because Lord Prime destroyed it.” I honestly think this line should be a meme. When you want to hide something from someone (but you know it does exist), just quote that exact line (kind of like “There is no war in Ba Sing Se”). I once said it to my sisters when they asked about certain fanfics I wrote as a teenager. (“Nope, they are located nowhere, because they do not exist, because Lord Prime destroyed them.”)

- Changes in the opening: Micah, Spinnerella, Scorpia and Mermista are now standing mind-controlled around the Heart of Etheria in the villains’ shot. They’re also all missing from the final heroes’ card. In that final shot, Perfuma and Sea-Hawk both look sad now, and Netossa looks angry.

- Catra touching her neck when she sees the spire on Krytis... 😢. I’m here for the angst, but I also just need Catra to get lots of love and comfort after everything she’s been through.

- Can we talk about how absolutely ADORABLE her space suit is, though? Bow is absolutely right to coo over those ears. And when she tries to take it off with her foot? And Adora laughs about it? And Catra smiles when she sees her laugh? ❤️❤️❤️

- Wrong Hordak still denying that Krytis exists while currently being on Krytis is absolutely hilarious to me. It reminds me of flat-earthers or anti-vaxxers, or people who try to deny Covid exists (while others are currently dying from Covid) - not that any of those are funny, of course. I just mean that wrong Hordak nicely demonstrates how ridiculous they can sound.

- Catra calling out the Best Friend Squad on how dumb their plan is and then reacting with “Honestly, what did I expect?” is absolutely iconic. They really were missing her as the team’s braincell all along.

- Bow and Glimmer teasing Catra about her “first mission”, Catra grumbling that she’s going to kill Adora’s friends, Adora responding with a really calm “Please don’t” - everything about this is perfect. 🤣

- Also, small detail, but I love how Catra has a hard time walking in her spacesuit because she’s not used to wearing shoes.

- The remaining rebels looking around the destroyed camp is really sad. Frosta immediately trapping Castaspella in ice and checking her neck is great, though. That’s what they should have been doing all along. Why didn’t they also check Shadow Weaver’s neck, though? I know she’s intimidating and all, but there was no way of knowing if she’s chipped.

- “How did the rebellion lose so many of our finest members and yet we’re still stuck with you?” Castaspella’s asking the real questions! I like how literally no one in the rebellion likes Shadow Weaver. (Though honestly, I’m also glad she’s not chipped. Imagine how hard fighting a chipped Shadow Weaver would have been.)

- “But if you try anything, I won’t hesitate to strike you down.” Castaspella said ‘I won’t hesitate, b*tch!’

- Every single part of Wrong Hordak’s existential crisis (and Entrapta’s handling of it) is absolutely hilarious. I’m not going to quote all of it here, but pretty much every line of it is comedy gold. My favourite moment is probably “It seems Wrong Hordak has begun to question the meaning of life” (and everyone’s annoyed expressions at his crying) 😂😂. (On a more serious note, though: As much as it’s played for laughs, Wrong Hordak turning his entire worldview around in such a short amount of time is also pretty epic.)

- Catra just cutting through that door - damn, she’s strong! And I love Adora’s blush! (Yeah, the door was probably just an illusion, but my point still stands. She’s at least strong enough that it doesn’t seem completely weird that she'd be able to just cut through a door like that.)

- “You have an arrow that turns into a magnifying glass? I can’t believe we were losing to you guys.” 🤣🤣 Catra realizing the people she was fighting are actually idiots will never not be funny.

- It goes hand in hand with Bow realizing Catra is actually a cute kitty with an adorable sneeze. Good stuff. And the way her tail gets fluffy when she insists she’s not cute? D’awww. (Bow saying “The angrier you get, the cuter you are” reminded me of that scene in Steven Universe where Peridot loses her limb-enhances at the beginning of her redemption arc and Steven calls her cute and “an angry little slice of pie”.)

- Castaspella’s cape getting stuck in tree branches and the like is pretty funny, ngl. This is why Edna Mode said “No capes”.

- Shadow Weaver saying that her gifts are “far subtler” than mind-control is very fitting. Her thing is manipulation, after all. She doesn’t need to control people’s minds when she can just manipulate them and raise them in a way that’ll make them do what she wants. It’s scarier than mind-control in a way because it’s far more realistic. Mind-control doesn’t exist in real life, but manipulative parents (or just manipulative people) who will mess someone up emotionally? Very realistic.

- I like that you can tell that something’s off about Entrapta’s voice this time if you pay attention to it.

- “Seriously? How have you guys stayed alive this long?” Yup, the people you were fighting are idiots and you’re the braincell of the team now, Catra.

- I love the creepy music when Entrapta tells them it’s the first time they’ve talked since the last floor.

- Also, I love how Catra’s first instinct is to just launch herself at Melog, even though you could tell she was terrified just a moment earlier.

- I really like the moment where Glimmer realizes there’s magic on Krytis, especially since she doesn’t have her other powers right now.

- Melog bonds with Catra because they have the same sneeze ❤️❤️

- “Are you... are you petting the thing that’s been trying to kill us?” I love this whole moment 😹. I also love how Adora is so protective of Catra and immediately yells “Get away from her!” when Melog seems to get angry.

Catra: “I’m sorry. I got angry. It’s something I’m working on.”

Adora [with sparkling eyes]: “Aww, you are?”

Catra: “Yes! Now can you please...” [deep breath] “Yes. I am.”

I love everything about this. Catra genuinely working on her anger issues, Adora being so touched about it (remember back in Taking Control where she wished that Catra would ‘at least try’?), Catra having to hold back her anger because she realized Melog responds to emotions - perfect. ❤️😂👍

- Catra is so sweet when she calms Melog down. And the moment where they form their bond is really nice.

- So, can Catra understand Melog because of their bond, or because they’re both cats? I’m assuming it’s because of their bond?

- Melog’s backstory is really sad. But Adora offering to take them to Etheria is a really sweet scene.

- I like the parallel between the Best Friend Squad realizing that magic is Horde Prime’s weakness (and that the only planet he ever failed to conquer had wild magic) and Shadow Weaver telling Castaspella that the First Ones weakened Etheria’s magic and they have to set it free.

- “Stop me if I try to take the power for myself.” I’m not sure how I feel about that line. I like how SPOP has very much written Shadow Weaver as ambiguous so far. She’s not a good or nice person by any means, but is she at least on the side of the good guys and really trying to help now or is she still only after her own selfish goals? I very much did not want Shadow Weaver to get any sort of redemption or forgiveness, and I’ve always interpreted her as still being power-hungry. So, I have mixed feelings about this line. I like that it canonically acknowledges that Shadow Weaver is still tempted by power and might actually try to take the magic for herself, but asking Castaspella to stop her if she tries makes her look more selfless and like she’s taking precautions against it. (But then again, could Castaspella even stop her if she tried? I’m pretty sure Shadow Weaver is the stronger one of the two. So, you could still read this as Shadow Weaver being a master manipulator and only saying this so Castaspella will feel more inclined to trust her and go along with her plan - while knowing full-well that she could easily defeat Castaspella if it ever actually came down to it.)

Glimmer: “So, just to make sure I get it - We’re going to go running through a Horde blockade while relying on the magic of a creature we just met?”

Catra: “That about sums it up, yes.”

You know what this means - Catra’s a part of the Squad now!

- “Punch it, Darla!” I still love that the ship’s name is Darla. Also, all of their expressions when they fly through the blockade should be a “draw the squad” meme.

- Catra holding Adora’s hand and getting embarassed about it ❤️❤️ (while Adora is dumb and doesn’t even notice).

- I did not expect us to get a Glitra cheek kiss this season, but I’m not complaining! Also, Catra complaining while Glimmer and Bow are hugging her is such a cat thing; I love it.

- “We made it. We’re home.” Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is actually the first episode this season that ends on a happy / hopeful note and not on some kind of cliffhanger. And I really like that. This is where the “space arc” of season 5 offically comes to and end and I’m glad it has its own little happy ending. (And as much as I like the final episodes of the season, the space arc is still probably my favourite half of it.)

I love this episode, mainly because of what it means for Catra. She’s finally happy, she saved the day, she’s bonding with Bow and Glimmer and constantly flirting with Adora, and she has an amazing therapy cat now! I loved all the bickering between her and the others and how she’s starting to open up to them. Also, Wrong Hordak was absolutely hilarious in this episode and I commend Entrapta for having the patience to deal with his existential crisis. This was a really nice way to wrap the space arc up and bring the Squad back to Etheria.

I’m so so SO glad you’re liking it!!!!!! It can get kinda heavy but it’s such a great story.... honestly I’d been wanting to start it since I saw the first pv for the anime all the way back last year but I was like, you know it’s a mappa anime! so I wanted to watch the anime as a new thing, cause I love mappa, but three episodes in I couldn’t hold back and just binged it. Bedivere x Arturia - Ship it

What made you ship it?

TBH I was one of those few people who shipped it based on that like 2 second scene at the end of FSN. The Camelot Singularity just reinforced it. A lot came from the original Arthurian legend as well. Bedivere is similarly insanely loyal as he is in the game, and like in Fate lore, he’s been with Arthur longer than most.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Irisviel x Arturia - Ship It

What made you ship it?

I think I was bound to the moment I watched Fate Zero. When I was younger it was overshadowed by the feels Diarturia brought and not to mention Kiritsugu and Iri but this ship is damn good on its own.

What sold it though, is the argument she and Kiritsugu have in Episode 16, right after the last Saber and Lancer fight. Irisviel, who we all know loves her husband so much, forced Kiritsugu to answer Saber. That’s just how important Arturia was to her.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I think they both found in each other something they themselves lack. It’s actually kind of funny. Arturia is human, and yet she’s so heavily consumed by her ideals that she doesn’t act like one. Irisviel, on the other hand, is not human, and yet everything that she does and wants to do is exactly that.

Throughout the anime, Being with Iri puts Saber into such mundane, ordinary situations that it teaches her to live. The suits, the escorting, being a passenger instead of a driver, appreciating the water by the seashore, etc. It's like the woman wants to leave her with some appreciation for the world, especially when she herself doesn’t have all that much time left.

On Irisviel’s part, I think she found in Saber the companionship she would have wanted from Kiritsugu during the last few days she remained on the Earth. Arturia had been the perfect knight in shining armor, taking Irisviel around to see the world as much as they could amidst a war. If they’d just had more time, I have no doubt Arturia would have taken Irisviel even more places, you know?

It makes me sad :( but in a good way.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I’m pretty sure Irisviel would wear the pants in this relationship ya know what I mean? Hahaha

Much as I love this ship, I think that it becomes all the more valuable because of how it ended. To each other, they were this brief, fleeting feeling of happiness. A love that was so short and yet so strong.

Shirou x Arturia - Don't Ship it

Hooooooo boi. Hear me out, mkay ? But this is just my personal opinion so pls no hate

Why don't you ship it?

I’m gonna start out by saying I don’t think I need to, tbh. Hahaha there’s enough content for this ship being fed to us, so my liking it or not is immaterial. But the reason is well...I watched FSN and Shirou x Saber was...not the best thing about it (the best thing about it was the soundtrack omg iconic) Shirou comes off as a bit of a misogynist, and kind of immature, and the whole time it’s like he doesn’t really listen to Arturia at all. Plus, it’s kind of like he just likes her looks at times. The final deciding factor was the date scene. That was just unbearable.

But then I go online and I see all this good stuff about them. And my friend ships them cause they’re canon, right? So, I’m like okay, what if I judged too quickly, let’s play the VN...and I did. And I still didn’t like him with Saber at all. So, I played the next route, watched the next anime, trying to redeem 1st route Shirou as much as I could but it just....didn’t happen. I think I can safely say I tried to like them. I really did. But no.

What would have made you like it?

Removing the misogyny and the immaturity and letting him listen to her. Like he should have.

At no point in their interactions did it feel like they were standing on equal ground, ever. Either he was speaking over her or the opposite. So less of that and a lot more respect.

And when you compare this relationship to what he has with like with his other two love interests, it makes this ship fall completely flat. It’s pretty...bland and honestly kind of shallow. It’s like the story just tells you they’re in love but there’s no answer to why they’re in love. Make him fall in love with her for her without necessarily forcing his need to save everyone on her.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

I may not like how they got there, but in the end Arturia was able to pass peacefully.

I acknowledge that Shirou was important and made a change in her life.

That ending scene where they meet after so long, NGL is pretty sweet.

A lot of my headcanons happen post-Shirou, so there’s also that.

Archer x Rin -Ship it

What made you ship it?

Tsundere x Cynic has gotta be one of the best dynamics out there.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

His true identity. The fact that she dragged him all the way across space and time to return as her Servant, that’s just bloody fate at work.

The fact that he keeps acknowledging she’s a strong Master despite his later conduct in UBW.

Archer is ridiculously crass and Rin is easily riled up. In the Fifth Holy Grail War, they had the best Master-Servant relationship period. They have this explosive chemistry that just works so well.

When he smiles at her at the end of the route, and you just know that Tohsaka’s gonna be stubborn enough to make sure Shirou doesn’t end up going down the exact same path.

I think it’s sweet that he ends up going along with her whims because he secretly likes housework.

THE PRINCESS CARRY/ CATCH. MAN OH MAN.

Unlike the previous ship mentioned here, these two actually stand on equal ground with each other.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I don't think it's exactly an unpopular opinion, but I think they really ought to have more official content y'know? Rin is important in every route, and Archer's the actual climax of UBW and also entirely significant across three routes.

Medusa x Sakura - Don't ship it

Why don't you ship it?

Because while journeying through the routes, I always saw Rider as more of a best friend/sort of motherly figure to Sakura.

Or that Rider fulfilled the kind of relationship that she wanted to have with Rin, while Sakura unknowingly filled the void Medusa's sisters left in her life. I thought she was more of a guardian angel really, not a romantic interest. Kind of like how Heracles was to Illya.

What would have made you like it?

If I could maybe forget about the threesome with Shirou and the implied romantic feelings Rider has for him in Ataraxia that would be great.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Sakura deserves all the happiness in the world and I really do believe that Rider could fulfill that.

What made you ship it?

oooh this probably sounds surprising since based on my content you'd think, no i dont ship this BUT I DOOOOOOO (i just happen to hc them as bros more often)

Honestly what did make me ship it is the parallels.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

IMO They have the biggest potential for hurt/comfort amongst all the ships mentioned here.

They can help each other get through their trauma. Their whole relationship would be extremely healing and supportive.

I love that Diarmuid seems to have idolized Cú Chulainn at some point and honestly who wouldn't be honored to stand beside him, no?

They could be up to the funniest shenanigans because Cú is chaos and Diarmuid would absolutely be an enabler because when he isn't angst-ing he's super damn chill.

BNHA Chapter 306 Spoilers Quick Thoughts: Holy Shit, Deku

Ok, I’ve decided to wait until I read the ReadMHA fan translations to make a full “Spoiler Thoughts” post because it’s easier for me to look at them than look back and fourth at various Twitter accounts to get the full picture.  Regarless, THIS CHAPTER OH MY GOD!!!!!!!  I haven’t been this antsy for leak images since the “Dabi is Touya Todoroki” reveal.  I wanted to write this last night, but I was already in bed crying and screaming my head off that I couldn’t.  Now that I have most of it processed, I need to write down some quick thoughts at least to get some stuff out:

First of all, I need to address THE BALLS ON HORIKOSHI-SENSEI FOR PULLING THIS SHIT OUT ON US AND MAKING IT WORK SWEET JESUS I DID NOT SEE THIS COMING AT ALL!!!!!!  THIS MAN BAITED US WITH THE 2ND AND 3RD ONE FOR ALL USERS AND MAYBE SOME THERAPY FOR OUR KIDS BUT NOPE!  HE JUST PULLED THE RUG UNDER ALL OF US AND THEN MADE DEKU LEAVE UA AND GO ALL VIGILANTE ON OUR ASSES!!!!!  I HATE IT HERE BUT I ALSO LOVE IT HERE I-

Second of all, the big topic that we all need to talk about: Deku leaving UA and everyone else to go off on his own.

Out of all the twist Horikoshi has pulled on us, I think this is the biggest and most unexpected one.  I honestly did think that some UA students would quit trying to be Pro Heroes after the war because of how much corruption and trauma has been brought to the surface.  But, Deku was one of the last people on my mind.  Out of all the characters in this series, I would think Deku would stay and prove to everyone that it’s ok to keep striving towards being a hero.  But, no...  He still wants to be a hero, but not the way any of us expected.  

Before Deku left, he wrote and left individual letter for every one of his fellow 1-A students (and hopefully his mom, All Might, Mirio, and Eri (OH, ERI ;~;)).  In it, he tells them the truth about One For All and why Shigaraki and All For One are after him.  Of course, all the kids are devastated.  What’s interesting to me is that we didn’t get reactions from everyone, it was mainly Uraraka.  This makes me wonder a few things:

1. If Deku wrote these out individually (his arms probably mostly healed at this point b/c he’s using them in the last page), I wonder if he wrote anything special for some of them.  Especially the people he’s close to.  Like, I need to know what he wrote to Iida, to Uraraka, to Inko, to All Might, TO SHOTO, TO BAKUGO.

2. WE DON’T GET TO SEE SHOTO’S AND BAKUGO’S REACTIONS TO DEKU LEAVING THEM AND I NEED TO SEE THEM NOW!  I DON’T CARE HOW SAD AND ANGSTY IT WILL BE I NEED TO SEE THEM!  I WANT TO SEE SHOTO BE A LITTLE BETRAYED BY THE LYING BUT ALSO COME TO AN UNDERSTANDING THAT DEKU DID THIS TO KEEP EVERYONE SAFE!  I NEED TO SEE BAKUGO WONDERING WHERE HIS DAMN NERD WENT AND MAYBE TRY TO FIND HIM BECAUSE HE WAS THE ONLY OTHER STUDENT WHO KNEW ABOUT OFA!  I KNOW I’M SCREAMING BUT AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

The final panel takes place in April, about a month after the war started and ended.  We weren’t given a specific timeline in when exactly Deku left UA, but it’s somewhere within that month.  So, does this mean he’s been on his own for nearly a month?  What has he been doing this entire time?

And that final double-page spread...  Good lord almighty.  It shows Deku standing on top of a building looking down at a villain attacking the city.  He’s in his hero costume but it’s all ripped up and worn out (probably what remains of it after the war arc.  I noticed his air gauntlets and arm bracers are gone too after looking at Deku again.  He still has his iron soles for his Shoot Style though).  He has his backpack on him and what looks like the rest of Gran Torino’s cape.  It hasn’t been confirmed if Gran Torino is alive or dead if Deku took his cape, but I can only assume he died based on Deku’s sad face and that there’s honestly no way Torino survived his injuries I’m sorry.  I’d be shocked if he were alive at this point.

And the last panel...  Deku looks so tired.  The light in his eyes is just gone as he says “A big villain” while looking out at the city.  Bringing us back to Chapter 1 of BNHA where one of Deku’s first pieces of dialogue was “A big villain!” while watching it rampage in the middle of the city.  Everything’s come full circle it seems and in the most depressing way possible.  I feel so bad for Deku.  He’s only 16 and even though his will to be a hero is still strong, I feel like a part of him has died honestly.  That childlike hope and innocence he’s shown since the very beginning doesn’t look to be there anymore.  My boy’s exhausted, Horikoshi, please give him a break.  And give yourself one too.

I wonder, if Deku is still doing hero work, but isn’t at UA anymore, does this mean he’s a vigilante?  I know he has his Provisional License, but does that thing even work if you’re not enrolled in the Hero Program you went to?  Because if it doesn’t, then Deku has technically gone full vigilante.  He looks like he’s about to put his bunny mask on in that last panel actually.  His current state of his costume screams vigilante to me even.  I’m really interested in seeing what Deku’s been doing and what he’s going to do now.  We know he left UA to protect everyone he cares about (because OFA is like a beacon to AFO now), but how long is he going to keep this up?  Is he going to run into Bakugo or anyone else in the meantime?  Is he going to run into the vigilantes from the BNHA Spin-off manga (Koichi, Pop-Step, Knuckleduster) or other vigilantes?  Is he ever going to see his friends and mom again?  Will any of our UA kids drop out of the hero course too?  I have so many questions, guys.  I want to go back to high school shenanigans, but that’s clearly not happening soon.     

Finally, the chapter appears to be titled “The Beginning of The End” or “Opening of Final Chapter”.  Ngl, I legit thought that this meant that the series was really ending like Horikoshi talked about in his last interview.  I took that with a grain of salt, but I don’t know anymore.  This could mean an end to the whole “Academia” part of the story.  We might get a big time-skip like Naruto, One Piece, Haikyuu, and a lot of other manga did before it.  I kinda don’t want this to happen because I like seeing characters grow in chronological order and Horikoshi-sensei has been pretty good at twisting the usual tropes, but I don’t know this time guys.  The chapter ends on a good spot to do a big time-skip if Horikoshi wants.  But, honestly, everything’s up in the air right now.  I have so many theories in my head right now about what might happen next.  This is truly some peak fiction though like goddamn.  I really hope this doesn’t mean that we’re reaching the final arc of the series, but if Horikoshi want it to be, then I have no choice but to respect that.  I really hope it isn’t though.

uhhhhh.....i mean i've been told that my characterization is good? like, ppl being able to picture the actual characters when they're reading n stuff, so that's nice. and i could write introspection forever, u don't even know man, i get in the zone. i love getting in a character's head and picking apart their emotional state

writing dialogue really trips me up because i get picky about word choice lmao. i can be writing uninterrupted for twenty minutes cuz it's all a character's inner monologue but the second they gotta speak out loud im sittin there like ok what words sound natural and how much would they be willing to say etc. etc. suddenly it's an hour later and i've written three lines of dialogue. plus i tend to edit as i go so i'm always stopping and going back and rewriting stuff instead of just finishing the damn story

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

Got bored, decided to write an essay about everything I could remember about splatoon lore because what else do you do with your spare time?

I wrote all of this in one go without taking any breaks and you can probably tell

So without further ado, I hereby present my incoherent ramblings about funny squid game story :)

(oh yeah major spoilers for like. everything but mainly the octo expansion so be warned I guess)

SPLATOON LORE:

Ok so basically Splatoon takes place in a post-apocalyptic Earth where the humans kept doing wars and ended up bombing the ice caps and they were killed by the rising sea levels and that’s why its all marine creatures but that isn’t important

So theres these two races right? Inklings (squids) and Octarians (octopi). There’s also these fucked up tentacle soldiers but the octolings are the important ones here (the -ling part means they’re anthropomorphic, that’s why they look like that). So they used to get along but then the sea levels started rising again so there was this huge war called the Great Turf War between the inklings and Octarians to decide who would get to live on the surface.

ngl the Octarians were kicking the inklings asses because they were too lazy and never got up early enough to defend against the attacks (no I’m not kidding) and they had these huge things called the Great Octo Weapons (those are the bosses in the games’ campaigns). So they were winning but then someone accidently pulled out a plug and all the octo weapons were deactivated (I’m fully serious) so the inklings won and the octarians went underground.

So like 100 years later Splatoon 1 happens, theres this thing called the Great Zapfish (a lot of things are Great huh) that powers Inkopolis which is where the inklings live, theres also all these normal zapfish I guess. The Octarians stole literally like all of the zapfish including the Great one and the inklings were like “damn that sucks I guess, hope the Great Zapfish comes back soon” because everyone thinks the Octarians went extinct.

But theres this guy named Cap’n Cuttlefish who used to be a sergeant in the Great Turf War (his troop was named the Squidbeak Splatoon I forgot to mention that) and he was like “yeah it’s the fucking Octarians again, cringe” so he recruits a secret agent to do agent things in the NEW Squidbeak Splatoon and get all the zapfish back and that’s Agent Three :) Oh yeah and the Squid Sisters (Callie and Marie) are his granddaughters and are also agents so theres that but they couldn’t help because they were busy with idol work.

ALSO the main enemies you fight in the campaigns are the fucked up tentacle guys I mentioned earlier but in some levels you fight octolings. Literally every single octoling that appears in splat 1 and 2 that works for the Octarian army wears these funky goggles (in the first game) or these weird shades (in the second game). I don’t know why I mentioned that, I’m sure its of no relevance

So they get the zapfish back eventually after kicking the Octarian leader’s ass and imprisoning him in a giant snow globe (his name’s DJ Octavio but he isn’t important right now) and everything is fine until about two years later when he escapes and steals the zapfish again. But Three and the Cap’n cant help because they’re on a different mission that definitely isn’t important or anything, so its just Callie and Marie. PSYCH its just Marie because Callie went missing like. On the same day that the zapfish were stolen which isn’t suspicious or anything. So its just Marie and she’s like “Ok this is pretty cringe, I gotta get a new agent to help” and that’s Agent Four :)

Oh yeah also Callie and Marie were the news hosts in splatoon 1 as well as idols and secret agents but they stopped doing it after the game ended because they wanted to work on their solo careers so the news hosts in splat 2 are these two fucks named Marina and Pearl and their group is called Off the Hook. They’re pretty cool. Also Marina is an octoling and literally nobody knows so that’s a thing that wont be important. Also her and Pearl are super gay its canon mr Nintendo told me (its seriously like the most popular ship in the splatoon fandom)

So Four goes to kick DJ Octavio’s ass again and Ah! Wow! What a shock! Callie was kidnapped by the Octarians! Basically Octavio is a bastard and hypnotized her with some cool sunglasses (huh, sounds familiar… oh well :) ) so Marie literally snipes them off her face and plays the Calamari Inkantation (oh yeah I didn’t explain that. So like Calamari Inkantation slaps and all but in universe it literally has like. Supernatural powers. It boosts the energy of any cephalopod that hears it and it is literally encoded in their veins, that’s really a thing, look it up. It can also break mind control which is convenient) and Callie goes back to normal, they sing and Octavio gets his ass handed to him for the second time and is put back in a snow globe. The End :)

Oh yeah also the reason the Octarians kept stealing the zapfish was because they needed the extra power for the places they lived underground, called domes. They’re gigantic and although they were able to live in them for like 99 years, they started running out of power just before splat 1. Without enough power the domes will collapse, killing all Octarians unfortunate enough to still be inside, so they mainly took the zapfish out of desperation. If you go into the boss levels and turn up the volume you can hear very heavy, loud crashes as well as faint screaming, which is probably the sound of one of the domes collapsing.

Octavio kidnapped Callie in the second game because the Calamari Inkantation is what fucked him up in the first game, it powered up Agent Three and made his shitty beats that were meant to power up the Octarians ineffective. With Callie out of the picture and working for him, the New Squidbeak Splatoon (or NSS) wouldn’t be able to use the Inkantation against him, and the Octarians would be able to keep the zapfish so they could survive. But like they’re the bad guys lol they’re mean and they look like this >:( so they deserve no mercy I mean trying to LIVE? cringe amirite

Also its heavily implied that every single octoling you fight is under hypnosis and don’t have any free will since you never fight any that don’t have something covering their eyes but that isn’t plot relevant so it doesn’t matter

And that’s it :)

    Lmao did you really think I was done? FOOL There’s also the second games dlc, the Octo Expansion (don’t look up octoling expansion dontdoitdontdoitdontdoitdontdoit) so we have to talk about that too :D

So basically when Three and Cap’n Cuttlefish went on that mission during spat 2 they were investigating some like. Suspicious location or something. And when they were looking around some place there was like. One (1) octoling there so Three fought them. They probably would have won tbh but I’m pretty sure some random person in a hazmat suit attacked them halfway through and made them fall into a huge facility run by this business called Kamabo co. that does clothes and nothing else definitely not :) btw the hazmat suit guy is never elaborated on or explained in game

So Three ends up getting separated from the Cap’n (fucking somehow??? they were both unconscious so like???) and he wakes up in some like. train station place along with that octoling, who ended up losing their memories from the fall (they were also humming the Calamari Inkantation before they came to but that probably doesn’t matter lol. The Cap’n is genuinely like “Oh you like the Calamari Inkantation? That’s based, we can be friends” and that’s why he doesn’t try and attack them for being an Octarian and technically one of the bad guys).

They try to find a way out and end up in this OTHER train station place which is way bigger than the last one. And they find this phone thing that talks using 80’s slang (the entire dlc is 80’s themed I forgot to mention. Idk why, its never explained, it just is) which tells them that this place is called the Deepsea Metro and its connected to the different “““““““““test””””””””” stations ran by Kamabo co. and if they complete all the tests and get the four “Thangs” they can get to the “Promised Land” (I’m not going insane. I’m not.) which is the surface. It shits out a metro card and this thing called a CQ 80 (which is basically just the level select in-game) and the octoling ends up becoming the 10,000 and 8th test subject (wow, that’s a lot of test subjects! I wonder what happened to them? I guess they got to the surface :) ) And the Cap’n is like “10,008 huh? I’m just gonna call you Agent Eight cuz its easier” and so the octoling becomes Agent Eight :)

They get to the tests by using this train (hence the name “Deepsea Metro”) that’s run by a little sea slug guy called C.Q. Cumber. He’s cool I guess, just doin his job. The only other noteworthy person there is this isopod called - you guessed it – Iso Padre. He’s just chilling, mainly interested in these mem cake things that Eight gets after the tests that are apparently their memories? I think? Idk its kinda confusing. It doesn’t really matter anyway

After the first test the Cap’n is like “Hey Eight nice job, I’ve just been fucking with my radio to try and contact Agent Three but they wont answer theirs which sucks :(” But then suddenly the radio turns on! It isn’t Three tho its Marina and Pearl because they found Three’s radio just lying around on the mountain where they all fell into the Metro and they’re like “Huh you’re stuck underground and you don’t know where you are? That kinda sucks man, we’ll help” and by help they mean run mission control like Cap’n Cuttlefish was already doing and occasionally offer advice or information but they’re cool so everyone just lets it slide.

The details of the tests aren’t important but Eight gets a mem cake every time they finish one which is nice :) Also in the tests they fight against Octarians which doesn’t make sense because they should be friendly to Eight right? But these Octarians are all pale and green and its almost like they’re just running on single-minded orders they’re getting in their brains like “destroy” so that’s cringe. They also have no vital signs according to Marina so they’re basically mindless zombies

Oh yeah also remember what I said about C.Q. Cumber just doing his job? Well he supervises the tests as well and whenever Eight fails he has to reset their progress. So Eight has this ink tank strapped to their back right? Like most inklings do in turf was and stuff. Theres this bag of liquidy shit at the bottom that doesn’t really do anything most of the time, but if Eight fails a test, the bag rapidly fills with more of that teal “““““““““ink””””””””” shit that literally every enemy in the dlc uses and it explodes and kills them instantly :) This happens many times

Also during the dlc, theres these text conversations between Marina, Pearl and Cap’n Cuttlefish. They aren’t that important for the overall plot I guess but thanks to the Cap’n literally being like. An army veteran, he realizes that Marina is an octoling and shows her army file to Pearl, presumably while Marina has a panic attack over her secret being exposed and thinking Pearl’s gonna abandon or kill her which would be lame. But Pearl’s like “huh. Anyway,” and quite literally threatens to stab the shit out of Cap’n Cuttlefish if he tries to be prejudiced against her for being an octoling and he’s like “ok damn” so its all cool :)

So eventually Eight gathers all of the Thangs and they make this giant machine that looks… kinda familiar but MORE IMPORTANTLY the phone says it’ll take them to the surface so its cool beans :) They and the Cap’n get inside and its only when they’re in and the machine starts that Marina and Pearl realize “wait. Wait that things a giant blender OH FUCK”

So Eight and the Cap’n almost die but Marina is a hacker and activated the distress signal on Eight’s CQ 80, and all of a sudden (I am being completely serious) Agent Three busts through the fucking roof wearing a sick cape which they just???? had I guess???, breaks the blender, and immediately knocks themself unconscious. Marina is like “Well that was fucked up, hey Eight the hole Three made in the roof seems to lead to the upper layers of the facility, you can probably get out through there” so they leave while the Cap’n takes care of Three.

The actual escape sequence isn’t very noteworthy apart from the fact that Eight doesn’t have a weapon for the first half of it so you have to do a stealth sequence which is definitely not nerve-wracking. Also we occasionally get snippets of dialogue from the Cap’n who keeps hearing the phone make noises? Then it suddenly starts ranting about how they’ll pay and does fuckin. Something to Agent Three, and Marina later comments on them and the Cap’n just fucking  s p e e d i n g  upwards at a high velocity and she’s like “huh I guess they’ll meet you at the top Eight :)” We don’t hear from the Cap’n again during the escape sequence but he’s probably fine

Eventually Eight gets to this massive elevator that leads to the surface and Pearl’s like “Aight dope we’re coming to get you guys, Marina we’re bringing like 10 helicopters to pick them up” for some reason but whatever I guess. So the elevators going up but then suddenly it stops and Three appears with a tied up Cap’n Cuttlefish! And they are just fucked UP, I’m ngl. Theres that same “““““““““ink””””””””” stuff from earlier on their face and the Cap’n is like “Bro the telephone spat some shit at Three and now its controlling them, this isn’t good” so Eight and Three have to fight.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that if Eight dies in a test we see their little ghost go back to the last checkpoint before they respawn, but if they die at any point during or after the escape sequence, Marina and Pearl freak the fuck out and theres no ghost, they’re permadead. The game just. goes back in time to when they were still alive. So that’s fun :)

Anyway Eight beats Three and that goop stuff disappears, but they’re fucking unconscious AGAIN so Eight and Cap’n Cuttlefish bring Three with them up to the surface where Eight sees their first sunrise :) Then Marina and Pearl come with like 20 helicopters just blasting music and they all fly off into the distance :)

But PLOT TWIST, that bastard phone isn’t dead yet! It turns out that the upper layers of the facility were inside this just MASSIVE replica of some famous statue or something idk art lore, and the phone appears in its head. Its like “Alright you fuckers listen up I’m bouta lore dump. So I’m an AI called Commander Tartar that was created by a human scientist like forever ago. I was meant to share humanity’s knowledge with the next sentient species but you all were so fucked up with your arguing over clothes and race wars and shit that I was like ‘This aint it chief’ and decided to wipe all of you out with this  s u p e r i o r  l i f e f o r m  l i q u i d I got from the other test subjects so like. Bye lmao we’ll be fucking seeing you”

Then the statue’s mouth opens and theres a giant laser inside that, according to Marina, has enough power to destroy the world, so that’s kinda lame. But she’s like “Ok this sucks but this statue is solar powered so if you cover it in ink then it wont be able to charge the gun anymore.” So Eight does that, but the laser is apparently going to fire anyway. Luckily they are directly in its line of fire so Pearl is like “Ok gamer time” and gets out a Killer Wail (it’s a special weapon from the first game. Inklings final smash, remember?) and just fucking screams as loud as she can and the two beams clash like god damn harry potter and of course she wins and blows the entire statue up.

Then after that they can finally relax after having saved the world               The end :)

Oh by the way, so you know how those parts Eight was gathering made a giant blender? You know how there are literally no other test subjects in the Metro? You know how that teal gunk Tartar was using was “from” the other test subjects? Yeah, that shit aint ink. 

And that bruh moment stew was being used to turn regular Octarians into those weird green versions through a process called “sanitizing” which seems to get rid of all of their free will and turn them into single-minded undead soldiers which is almost what happened to Three :)

So yeah! That’s the (incredibly traumatizing) Splatoon lore! Funny squid game, amirite?

Adrian finds out Nova is Nightmare, and confronts her

 Nova looked at the mask held in Adrian’s hands, the glint of metal handcuffs hanging on his belt, the bright red R emblazoned on his chest.  Anywhere but his face.  He glared daggers into Nova, and the change from his soft gazes filled with joy to this hard stare made her shrink back. The face that used to be soft curves and gentle smiles, was now a mess of barely held tears, a clenched jaw and eyebrows slanted angrily.  

Nova’s eyes accidentally caught his, and she flinched at the hatred in them.  

Why had she been so damn stupid, to think that there was an ending that ended in something other than tragedy for them.  

“Adrian, I can explain-” she started, knowing it was pointless.

“Stop.  Talking.”  He said tightly.  “I don’t want to listen to your lies.”

“Adrian, I swear I’m telling the truth.”

“The truth?”  He scoffed, tone incredulous.  “Why the hell should I believe you?”

Nova felt tears gathering up, threatening to spill over.  “I’m not going to lie to you anymore.  I just need you to understand.”

Somehow, his tone got angrier.  “Oh, I understand plenty,” he spat viciously.  “I understand how you were working against us for months, while we were ready to die for you.  I understand how you used me, and Ruby, and Oscar, and Danna, just to get something for yourself.  I understand how you pretended to be a Renegade, just so you could bring it all tumbling down.  I understand how you faked everything with me, you used me, made a fool out of me.  I understand exactly who you are, Nova Mclain.”  he paused.  “Or, should I say Nova Artino?  You’re just like the rest of them. I’d expect nothing less from the niece of Ace Anarchy.”

“Adrian, that’s not true-” she tried.  “I did care about you.  A lot.  Enough to leave my entire life behind.”

“Are you denying it?  Are you saying you aren’t an anarchist?  You aren’t Nightmare?”  He held the bright metal mask up, a reminder of the chasm of lies in between them.  

Nova shook her head, the tears finally spilling over.  She couldn’t control anything anymore, it seemed.  “I was Nightmare.  I was an Anarchist.  But I’m not anymore.  I left, so I could be with you, and I could do good.  Adrian, you made me realize that I wanted to be a good person.  I wanted to be a hero, not a villain.  I was ready to give my whole world up for you.”  She dared to meet his eyes, tears still spilling out of her own, tired brown ones.  

There was a second where everything was soft.  Adrian was looking at her with… it almost seemed like hope.  And, though Nova could have imagined it all, it seemed as if there was still some love left in his gaze.  

But it was only a second, and reality is never what Nova would wish it was.

“Lies!”  Adrian screamed.  “Stop manipulating me.  Stop trying to make me believe this complete bullshit you are coming up with.  You’re just flailing in deep water, trying to claw your way out of this hole you dug yourself.”  He inhaled, and straightened, his eyes slightly glassed over, as if he was trying to hide the emotions warring in his mind.  

Nova felt a part of herself break apart.  “Adrian..”  She should put him to sleep, and run away.  She should fight her way out of this mess, and survive another day.  But she couldn’t bring herself to lift a finger against Adrian.  She couldn’t hurt him more than she already had.  Nova honestly didn’t think she could live with herself if she did.  

“My dad’s and the rest of the council will be here soon.  They will take over, and you will have a short trial, and then be shipped off to Cragmoor, like the criminal you are.  Then, you will be administered a dose of Agent N, and you will cease to be a prodigy.”

“And you’re fine with all of this?”  Nova asked desperately, feeling as if she were about to throw up.  “You’re fine with them wrongfully banding me as a criminal, when everything I have done is to help this organization?  When you don’t even know the whole story?  Adrian, I never chose this.  I didn’t ask for my parents to be killed, and for my uncle to be the only one who would take me in.  I didn’t fucking ask to be manipulated and forced into a hatred of the Renegades for my whole life.  I never had a choice.  I was leaving for you.  I’m not a criminal, I’m still a scared little girl, who’s screaming as the world's passing me by, looking at all those people who don’t spare me a glance.  Please, will you at least listen to me.”

Adrian’s fists tightened.  “You didn’t need to stay with the Anarchists.  You could have left.  You could have forgotten them, and just told me the truth.  You never had to hurt anyone.  You never had to hurt me”

Nova shook her head.  “How?  How could I have left my entire life?  Everything that I knew was with the Anarchists.  They fed my hatred, they fueled me on my journey for vengeance.  They wouldn’t have just let me walk, and you know that.  Adrian, you need to understand.”

“The council is almost here.  I hope you save some of your begging for them.”  Adrian’s voice was ice once again.  Nova dared to look at his face, cringing away from the anger and hostility radiating off of him.  

“For what it’s worth,” she said quietly.  “I’m sorry. For hurting you.  I never wanted too.”  She paused, then added, “and it was all real.  My feelings for you.   I just wish you could understand it wasn’t my fault, and I’m not the guilty one.”

“Stop talking now,” Adrian spat.  “I can’t listen to your voice anymore.”

His wristband buzzed, startling the both of them.  He looked down.  

“One minute until you’re out of my life forever,” Adrian said tightly.  

Nova felt that panic inside her writhe.  She wasn’t going to be a prodigy.  She’d be forced to spend her life as a prisoner, when she had been ready to leave the Anarchists for Adrian.  It would be ironic, except Nova was shaking with both fear and exhaustment, and she was just so tired.  

And still, she tried to sway Adrian.  

Maybe it was fruitless, but she had to make him understand.  

“Adrian, I deserve your hate, your anger, all of it, I do.  I lied to you, and I now see that was the worst decision I could have made.  But are you ready to succumb me to a fate worse than death, without even beginning to hear my side?”

“The council will give you a trial.”

“The council?”  Nova couldn’t help but scoff.  “The council are the ones who left me to die 10 years ago.  They won’t give me a fair trial.  They’ll look at the metal mask, and paint me guilty without bothering to ask me why any of this happened.  The council would sentence me to death if they could.  Hell, maybe they will!”  

Adrian glanced up, looking to the sky.  Thunderbird was hovering high above them, waiting to descend. 

“Your time’s up.”

No.  Nova couldn’t let this happen.  She couldn’t let herself be captured.  Not now.  Not with so many things left unsaid.  

Unthinkingly, she grabbed onto Adrian’s hand quickly.  It was warm, the calloused skin so comforting to her.  She could sense his blood flowing, her heart beating in perfect sync with his. 

“Adrian, you cannot let them do this to me,” she begged, fully sobbing now, both from grief and fear.  

For a brief moment, Nova thought she had gotten through to him.  She thought he was about to step out of her way, and let her flee the city for good.  She thought, maybe he finally understood that she wasn’t the villain, she was the victim.  

Instead, his voice hardened, and his eyes turned as cold as ice.  

“Let go of my hand,” he hissed.

List of what I wanna see and what I don’t wanna see in the next book

I love the idea of Myron maybe having saved Jacob and Noor by teleporting them out of V’s loop. So maybe at the very beginning there are a few lines hinting at something or someone saving them or whatever. Like a huge hand is closing around them and they assume it’s Caul, but it was actually Myron—and boom they’re at Abe’s house (credits to @shibibble for the idea with the hand) (also yes I know Ransom Riggs has read a bit of the beginning in his first livestream I think? But yeah, so ahaha we’ll see)

Just Myron coming back in general. I’d kill for another family reunion

Myron and Miss P talking again!! Very important!! I want them to get along at least a tiny bit

Where is my boy PT—the last time he was mentioned was when Myron had to leave him outside the library cause PT wouldn’t fit through the entrance and now I’m scared he died in the collapse

Where is Kim? In LoS at the end they were even searching for him for a moment, which made his vanishing sound important

Okay but I’d find it so funny if Caul heard of that theatre play of the Battle of Devil’s Acre and will be forcing that peculiar theatre group to perform in front of him and the whole time he’s interrupting the play like “boring!” or “is that supposed to be me?” while eating popcorn or something, I dunno what a giant tree monster would like to eat. Meanwhile the peculiars are performing, while badly trembling with fear

What I would also really love is if the book ended with Jacob being a couple of years older and telling his story to a bunch of young peculiars, so that the whole series was basically him telling his story (so he does what Miss P and Miss Cuckoo suggested him to do in AMoD, cause I think years later he’d be ready to share his story. Like sorry, but I don’t think that only two months later he should already open up about all this, even though he still has to deal with it himself)

UHM PLEASE GIVE JACOB AND THE OTHERS THERAPY PLS!! OR ALL OF PECULIARDOM, ESPECIALLY THE KIDS. But peculiar therapists, cause normal therapists will just be like “damn you crazy”. Peculiar therapists know that all these “crazy” things are an everyday thing but that they can be traumatising. Well the wights shooting, kidnapping, killing people is definitely traumatising, there’s no denying that

Caul PLEASE NOT being defeated just by being sent to some inaccessible dimension again (I already have a whole scene with him being defeated in my head and I hate it, cause it makes me have very specific expectations lmao, but I will probably talk about that in a future post)

More about Abe, that was the very thing that opened the story of this trilogy after all

Jacob maybe actually succeeding to explain everything to his parents. I feel like he hasn’t completely given up on that, or if he has, he shouldn’t (also he left their car in Abe’s garage in AMoD 👀 what if that will lead to his parents finding out all that about Abe)

I wanna see the kids’ peculiarities at their peaks. At least the ones that can improve like Hugh, Emma, Enoch, Fiona, Noor and Jacob. Imagine Enoch leading a VERY big army of dead people/animals like he never did before for example. That’d be epic. Or, I don’t know, Jacob controls even more than 11 (?) hollows like he did in LoS. Like 20 maybe, or even 30

Maybe more about the Bentham siblings 👀 I feel like that’s another reason why Caul was brought back into the story

Hopefully the apocalypse spreads into the normal world too and not only peculiardom. I mean bad for THEM, but hehe exciting content for the readers. Also in TCoTB in chapter 3 Miss Peregrine says that if a war or something broke out NOW, it would be too hard to cover or make the normals forget/manipulate their memories. And after all Caul was also talking about how oh! Back then! They used to rule over normals! And how they were at the head of the human table! Pretty sure that that’s what he wants

Some epic, scary interactions between Caul and Jacob, because as I said in some previous post, I think their rivalry is becoming very real just now, becoming personal and oh shit

I think we can all agree that we all very badly want to see more of the girl and her plushie? Pensevus who were in the epilogue of TCoTB

Bnha is a little too irregular for me right now (covid is the worst :( ), so I started reading One Piece and it's like, soooo long. Got me thinking, how long do you think Bnha will be? Personally I think we're just before time skip and it will take, like 300-400 chapters to end? So manga would be 600-700 chapters long. I could be wrong of course. Thoughts?

One Piece is fucking awesome, and the beauty of it is that is is 12 million chapters long so it will take approximately 182 years to finish reading, and you are almost guaranteed to be entertained for the vast majority of that time lol. I actually took a break from it a little ways into the Wano arc (sometime in the middle of what would later become volume 92) because it was getting harder for me to keep up with the plot week by week, especially since I was really into BnHA fandom by that time. my plan was to binge it once Wano ends. however when I was looking at the list of chapters on Wikipedia just now I saw that Oda is only 11 chapters away from breaking the 1k mark, which is pretty awesome. so I might try to catch up in the next month or two in celebration of that milestone, because damn.

with BnHA though, my own guess for how long the series will be is actually a lot shorter than most estimates I’ve seen. first of all, full disclosure that I am definitely biased regarding the timeskip part, because I personally am not the biggest fan of BnHA timeskip theories, unless they’re really short timeskips like the 3-month one we got recently. the thing is, this is explicitly a manga about their time at UA. it’s in the title and everything lol. and I like that. I like reading about them as kids, little hero eggs gradually growing into little hero chicks who will eventually become big hero birbs, but not just yet. a lot of the story’s appeal for me comes from that. there’s a certain... I don’t necessarily want to say innocence, but idealism, maybe?, that’s associated with stories about young adults, and doesn’t always carry over into the stories about those same adults once they’ve grown up. and I want the story to keep that.

there are a lot of things about the current setting that I’m very attached to and don’t want to lose. I like that they’re kids, and that they’re full of potential but don’t always know what they’re doing, and they screw up and make mistakes and get in over their heads, and are dealing with all of their messy jumbled teenage emotions. I like that they’re living with each other in the fanfic dorms and seeing each other every day in their classes. I like that romance isn’t a big part of the series (though there’s still plenty of shipping fuel to go around). I like that we get to see them interacting with their parents and siblings and get to see those relationships. and most of all, I like that -- unlike almost every other young adult series I can think of -- BnHA acknowledges that they are just kids, and the adults by and large actually treat them as such. and yes, I’m even including the child soldiers arc here, because the decision to basically draft them into a war was handed down by the HPSC (an organization that likely has a history with child abuse from what we’ve seen). U.A. was against it, and tried their best to keep them away from the front lines, chilling out in the woods and helping with evacuations instead of fighting villains. contrast this with, say, a:tla, which I love, but which is very much one of those series filled with full-grown adults who are all “it’s up to this 12-year-old and his assorted 12-to-15-year-old friends to lead the battle to save the world lulz.” and this includes possibly the most beloved full-grown adult of all time, who nonetheless peaces out with an ironclad argument of “while it is true that the final villain is my actual brother, I’m still going to let the 12-year-old handle it because something something politics slash destiny.”

but anyways lol got sidetracked there. so steering this back on course now, I genuinely, truly love that in BnHA there are all these adults in the characters’ lives who are trying to keep them safe and nurture them and shield them from that extra burden of responsibility for as long as possible while they’re still learning. and so the kids have that extra safety net of support, which to me as a reader is just... comforting, I guess. like, I understand that it’s not going to last forever, but it’s reassuring to know that it exists for them for now. and I’m not in any hurry to say goodbye to that in favor of just tossing them out into tHE REAL WORLD!! lol. like omg no my babies.

anyway but so the point is that, with respect to everyone else’s theories, I personally don’t want a timeskip lol. and tbh I don’t really see the need for one either? if anything, we’re about to enter the most chaotic period in the entire manga once this arc ends. I’m assuming Tomura will survive this and escape somehow, the better to live and fight another day. and so if that’s the case, I feel like this would be the absolute weirdest time to do a timeskip, because how far ahead can we even jump lol. too far and we’d basically be coming back to an already-destroyed world lol whoops. basically I just don’t see how we can jump ahead more than a few months at the most, assuming that the threat of Tomura is going to be looming over everyone’s heads the entire time. plus we’d miss out on what I’m betting is going to be some of the most intense worldbuilding drama in the entire series, with our beloved characters potentially being swept up in like half a dozen political controversies. I sure don’t want to miss out on any of that. we didn’t wait so long to see this war play out only to skip out on the highly entertaining aftermath of it all.

anyway so that’s my as-usual-longer-than-necessary rant about timeskips. so now let’s talk about the series length. and here, I’m basically just basing my guess off of what Horikoshi has said in interviews. off the top of my head, there are three times he’s mentioned the ending of the series in interviews. first, there’s this interview, published in July 2018:

Interviewer: Previously in SUGOI JAPAN*, you mentioned that you would like Boku No Hero Academia to be a short and concise story and not drawn out, but what percentage of the story is complete at this point?

Horikoshi: When the decision to extend the series happened, I personally thought “I guess I want to end it here” and it was around Volume 30.

Interviewer: So then are you 2/3 done with the story?

Horikoshi: That’s what I had originally planned, but when I think of all the things that must be set up before getting into the last arc, I realized, “Ending the series at Volume 30 will be impossible” (laughs). However, the current arc that is going on all has purpose that will be relevant in the last arc.

*this is referencing a remark he made back at an awards ceremony back in March 2017.

second, we have this interview from August 2018, where he again mentions wanting to keep the story concise:

Do you know what the ending of My Hero Academia is? Do you think it'll be 80+ volumes like One Piece?

No, it won't be infinite – I don't have the stamina for it to be as long as One Piece. I'd like to keep it concise.

What can you say about the future events of the manga?

I’m conscious of the end of the series, and writing towards that. I think the story will always be moving in big ways going forwards. My Hero Academia has a lot of characters, a lot of characters doing different things with different motivations, and the story is heading towards a conclusion where all of that comes together and heads towards the end.

my takeaways from these interviews are that (1) he originally planned for the story to be about 300 chapters long, (2) he’s had a clear idea of his overall endgame for a while now and has been steadily working towards that (as he put it in another interview, he knows all of the dots, but is still figuring out the lines to connect them all), and (3) he specifically said a couple years back that he did not want to write a long One Piece-length series, and his goal was to write a more concise story than that. Horikoshi’s pacing has always been much faster than Oda’s (or Kishimoto’s, or Kubo’s, etc.), and so I think it’s a realistic goal for him to wind up with a significantly shorter story in comparison.

my best guess is that BnHA won’t be much longer than 400 chapters, or a little over 40 volumes. he said back around chapter 180-something that he was nowhere close to being two-thirds of the way done. but it’s been two years since then, and if we haven’t reached at least the two-thirds mark by this point, I would honestly be very surprised. it would mean we’ve barely made any progress at all, and I don’t know about you, but the past few arcs have felt very purpose-driven to me. I think he has a pretty good idea of where he’s heading at this point, and that to me supports the idea of a shorter story than a lot of people have speculated. mind you, he might end up doing a sequel or something afterwards (although I kind of cringe thinking about all the ways we’ve seen that kind of thing go wrong in the past, ngl).

but as far as the series proper, yeah, I’d say 400 chapters is my best guess. ultimately I just hope he’s able to tell the story he wants to tell and gets as much time as he needs to do so, without feeling any pressure to then drag it on past that. knowing when to end your series is so underrated honestly. I have my fingers crossed that it’s a skill Horikoshi hopefully possesses.

Alright fuck it I figured it's time to put my nuts in the ring when it comes to writing up rwde reviews about shiddy writing.

I already made a post about how closure doesn't exist in rwby, so that SHOULD trim this a bit. Hopefully.

These last two of seasons of rwby have been ASS and idk even know where to start. So lemme do some character progressions instead of jumping all over the place. Let's start with my fav: Neo. And I'll be as unbiased as possible.

Starting from v6, she came back and teamed up with Cinder. Cool? Cool. Fair enough. V7 onwards she's been treated like a BITCH by Cinder and has visibly shown her disdain for that on screen. And yet she still chooses to hang with her? Why? Like... Genuinely why? Is Neo not like the stealth queen? And the driver of a thousand vehicles? Why does she even need Cinder? Could she not have just jacked an airship herself, flown to Atlas after getting the info from Cinder, and began her hunt there? Instead she's just some minion to her now? Okay fine so let's say their team up makes sense in some odd world. Why the fuck would Neo agree to go to Cinder in the Satan Whale? Why? Why the fuck is she there? After being denied multiple times to get to Ruby and even being treated like shit with visible disdain, she should have absolutely left with a middle finger to Cinder. But nope. We get to see her be visibly uncomfortable in this cult and clearly wants out. Which she does, so good shit. She snatches the lamp and heads out. Fair enough, I guess? I don't know why the fuck she trusts Cinder to go back to her after being treated like shit. After Cinder's doodoo attitude towards her, Neo should be like "wow maybe she's lying to me about roman lemme check with this genie bitch" but no. And don't say "oh well she can't talk so jinn wouldn't be able to answer her." Fuck that. 1. I should hope that the password wouldn't be so ableist against mute people. 2. Neo's resourceful as hell. Text to speech and boom. There ya go. Instead she goes back to Cinder like a lost puppy after being shown multiple times how much she hates her. Why the fuck does she need Cinder to get to Ruby? I have no fucking idea! And then everyone's favorite scene. I know I know she killed Blake's hip atta-- I mean character devel-- I mean Yang. That scene. Was doodoo. And I'll get into more intricacies about it much later. But for now, why the hell was Neo so sloppy in that assassination? Like gurl you revealed yourself so early from, apparently so far away? Pretend to be a passerby with everything disguised (I saw that lamp) impale her and boom. Done. Not sure why she went for a slash either when a thrusting weapons like that would be best for a quicker impale. It would have made any on screen death so much more confirmed instead of up in the air bullshit.

Next we have Ironwood. Oh James. How far you've fallen. I don't really understand what the hell they're doing with this character any more. Like... At all. I fully expect him to turn into the joker and join salem at this point lmfao. At first he was complex, but cool, right? Ok a stern leader who still wants to help people and see team rwby in beacon grow and be successful. Fair enough. Then came v4 and he was like "hey yang. Heard about the arm. Here ya go homie." That was pretty cool to give to a young veteran. Fair enough. But good god once v7 hit, everything just went haywire. He started making the dumbest decisions. Kind of. I understand how he's like "aite let's sack mantle to ensure atlas lives cause otherwise both parties will be dead." except idk why he didn't just make a plan to evacuate everyone to mantle first but whatever. I mean team rwby did it like... In a day? Shouldn't have been hard. Then he started losing his fucking mind. There was an entire thing about trust issues and plans (ngl I didn't care enough to pay much attention) and he ends up wanting to arrest the kids more than actually stopping Salem. Like homie. Why. You have a gang of strong ass hunters on your side, don't just throw that away. They could say "acab fuck the police anarchy reigns" and you should still keep them just to fight literal satan on your doorstep. But he fucking drops everything and resources and materials on arresting them. Like why???? And then he just shoots a child just because? And he goes around full fascist mode and his character is just gone at that point. He literally actively wants to kill the people of Mantle now instead of stopping Salem and I don't fucking get it. He could literally plot with salem about how to nuke mantle and I'd be like "shoulda seen it coming". And then when he gets outta jail he kills Jacques... Just cause? Like why? I understand Jacques let Salem's forces in and eventually led to this shit show, but like... Atlas was falling. Just leave. I don't understand. But I guess it's to show how hateful he is towards those who oppose him, so whatever. Idk I'm so done with him. This man is just so boring I just can't wait for him to get killed off so we can be done with him. I'm sure I missed a fuckload of intricacies about Ironwood but I really don't care at all about this schmuck.

Next on the shitlist is the entirety of team rwby. Just to compact it all into one. Ruby has been getting on my nerves SO much. She is so holier than thou and always right. If she had just openly talked with Ironwood about all these secrets and shit, none of this would be happening. Yeah there would be panic, but homie what's the alternative? Fight in secrecy against the police and Salem?

"hey Ruby I noticed that lamp you keep hanging around. What is that?"

"oh uhhhh definitely not a grimm magnet HAHAHAHAH"

Like no shit everyone's gonna be pissed when you lie to them and keep these secrets. Also these plans are dogshit. "We gotta get a message out." To who??? The rest of the world is gonna see some lil kid be like "hey Ironwood's gone crazy and some evil witch bitch is here tryna kill us all." Like who are they gonna believe? A random girl or the fact that ironwood is the head of the largest military state in the world? For all they know it's just some prank and it's totally unbelievable.

Team RWBY sippin team for v8 and doing nothing all volume? Nice. "But they needed to protect Nora." You mean to tell me Ruby, May, Blake, and Weiss all had to be there to protect someone. The Grimm attacked once and that was it. You guys have no medical history. At all. All you did was wrap her up and drink tea during the volume where there's a literal war happening outside. You don't just "wait for help" you ARE THE HELP you're hunters you fucks! Go out and get shit done. Have like one person stay behind just in case shit goes wrong. Preferably Weiss so she can have those meaningful conversations with her family members she never fucking had. But whatever. Ruby and Yang get into... A fight? That lasts for five seconds when they leave and then when they see each other again it just doesn't matter so I'm not sure why the fuck it was brought up at all. It had no impact whatsoever. And there's a ton more I'm sure I'm just burning out at this point. But let's just talk about the big shit. Yang's death. Everyone's saying she'll come back because plot armor but I'm in the "I genuinely think she's dead" group. She turned to Dust as she fell. I mean who knows maybe Deus Ex machina rears it's convenient head. I hate hate hate how that scene was done. That was such an unbelievable death. Weiss, Ruby, and even Blake all have ways of catching her. Easily. Weiss has like fifty ways of catching someone between summons and semblance. Ruby can teleport around the world. And Blake can just shadow clone jutsu her way there but WHATEVER. I guess everyone was too busy being nerfed and sucking ass. Again. And the reactions? Dog shit. Even when she sacrifices herself for Ruby, it's still all about the bees. It's so genuinely annoying. Ruby just whispers her sisters name and that's pretty much it aside from a >:( face here and there. Weiss doesn't even grieve she just comforts Blake who's losing her shit. And I don't know why Weiss doesn't grieve cause SHE WAS HER HOMIE TOO LIKE C'MON RT LET'S SEE SOME UGLY SOBBING DAMN so now everyone's gone feral (except Weiss who just doesn't give a shit about Yang apparently.) And despite Blake saying "yo let's not kill people aite Yang?" She's gonna say fuck that and have it out for Neo and Cinder out of revenge. Alright I guess. That's fair honestly. Challenging ones own morals based on emotions. Good enough. But god I just wished we could see more from Ruby and Weiss during that. Also I'm so sick of the "oh this character fell are they dead are they not?" Thing that rt keeps doing. Just have Neo impale her and go. Easy as that. On screen confirmation. I'm sure team RWBY has a fuckload more to crit but I'm done with this topic.

Winter. Bootlicking to the extreme that she casts aside her own sister and doesn't care if her friends die. Nice. No closure at all after she turns back to being a good guy I guess. I'm done with her. Not a whole lot to say.

The aceops are just so dumb. I'm done with them. Everytime they talk about genocide for the good of atlas I'm just rolling my eyes. Just say you're fascists and move on. And idk why the fuck harriet is gonna bomb an empty mantle. Atlas is already falling on it, you literally have no reason to do this. And this plot point is stupid as hell. Next.

Cinder. I'm not sure why they decided to randomly drop her background story into the mix. Like I don't think anyone gives a shit after all the crap she's done. I'm so sick of rt trying to make her some "uwu woe is me" woobie after doing so much shit and killing so many people. Her uwu crying moments are just stupid. Honestly watts is one of my fav characters just for telling her how crappy she is. Next

Hazel. Homie is dumb as hell. He hates Ozpin because his sister died in a mission. Fair enough. Why the fuck would you ever join Grimm Hitler when Grimm are what killed her in the first place??? Like??? Just hate him on your own time dude, jesus. And he is consistently hypocritical and it's so stupidly funny how bad this character is.

"HOW MANY MORE CHILDREN WILL YOU HURT OZPIN" as he beats the piss outta Nora, Ren, RWBY, Oscar, and probably some random five year old on the street while shouting OZPIIIIN to the skies. It also didn't take a whole lot to convince him how stupid he was thank god. His character was so cool in design and in theory but good god he got executed soooo fucking poorly. Kinda glad he's dead just so we don't have to deal with his stupidity. Next.

Emerald. This bitch. I can't. I LOVE how easily rwby just forgave her. It was so stupidly funny. "oh but yang was ready to fight her at first and snatched her weapons" yeah for five fucking minutes. Then came the part where she helped stabilize Penny and gave a half assed speech about switching sides. Meanwhile everyone's just magically forgiving of her like OH THAT EMERALD AHAHAH like she didn't help orchestrate the fall of Beacon, the death of many, including Penny, and all the terrible shit that's gone down. No resentment from RWBY except for my favorite line delivered this volume. It was Weiss's ever so beautiful "SHUT UP" LOL (I play Smite and I love how her VVGQ Quiet voice line sounds the same. So when I heard this line, I thought of Smite and immediately laughed. Kudos to you Weiss.)

Salem. The hound attacked Penny in the mansion... Why? You already established connection with Watts in jail. Did he not tell her "ay she cool with us." And in turn did she not tell him "ay she cool with us don't hit her"? I guess not? Cause the hound and penny shoulda bounced together the second they met up lmao. Other than that, salem's done nothing this volume except try to be scary and get her ass beat by hazel. She could easily just go out in the field with her grimm and blasts some people or SOMETHING GOD so far our main villain is just so boring and unimposing that literally every other villain, including her subordinates, feel more like threats than her.

Now I'll just talk about scenes.

The scene with ambrosius was COATED IN CONVENIENCE. Apparently Ozpin didn't tell the gang about the WinMore button they could just fucking walk to until now because??? Idk. I LOVE how team rwby just assumed that penny would be okay when they took her robot parts out. Realistically she should just be a floating husk of aura and nothingness. Like she never had organs. I don't understand how she's a real person now? Which, by the way, I'm pretty fucking insulted about how they handled that. Why make Penny human? She was already a real girl and accepted by her loved ones. Like shit, she was a character that a LOT of transgirls, myself included, could relate to on a personal level and we LOVED how Ruby handled it in v2. It was cute! It was sweet! She said she was a real girl back then and it made all of our collective kokoros go doki doki. Fun stuff!

But now? It feels like none of that was validated until she got an actual human body. Like damn I wish I could just get my ideal body within seconds. Shit. I've seen and heard a lot of upset from my fellow tgirls about how doodoo that scene was, because it's implying penny wasn't a real girl until after she got her human body and that's probably how most of the rwby fandom is gonna see it too. "oh wow penny's a real girl now!" And just forget Ruby's cute speech in v2. So annoying. Minor nitpick, if she's got the aura of a black man inside of her (her father), and her robot body is gone, why the fuck isn't she black? Like? Idk minor nitpick I guess. But anyways back to ambrosius scene. I love how rwby had the answers for everything within the hours worth of planning they were given by Ironwood's motive. Totes believable. And yet the "one way ticket to vacuo" thing was the simplest shit they could have avoided lmfao. Like THAT is what you trip up on? Not the portals you're trying to make or the assumption that penny lives without her robot parts? Insane. (side note: how did oscar have a flashback to that scene if he wasn't even there?)

And now everyone's favorite scene. Yangs death. Already covered it early I just wanted to add more on. This scene is insane. Like... If they actually go through with killing her (i don't see how she could have survived turning into dust) then roosterteeth is dumber than I gave them credit for. Like... They have to realize the shitstorm they're gonna receive right? First they kill off clover, an lgbt+ coded character. Next is Yang? A main character who is WIDELY loved by all. Apart of their most pandered ship in existence: bees. (Both the ship and the character make them so much money in merch btw so this was stupid from an objective standpoint.) You can't just kill a main character that is heavily lgbt+ coded in THE most popular ship in the show. Like... How dumb can they be? They're gonna lose so many fans at the very least. Sales? Down. Death threats? Way up. It would be astonishing if they weren't up to their necks in shit in backlash by that decision. Bury Your Gays trope strikes again folks. But this time with everyone's favorite! Like I just... Idk that decision was stupid and that scene hardly was given any real pomp or circumstance it deserved. She's a major title character and that scene lasted like a minute lmao. It's gonna be RWBY without the Y. RWB. As in rt is a bunch of rubes for making that decision. A cynical part of me thinks they did that just because they want an excuse to off Neo, another really loved character. (Well if everyone hates her now we can kill her off cause god knows we don't know what to do with her), but I'm not gonna make this about her. I honestly don't know how to feel about this death tbh. On one hand it's shitty and *points to essay above*. On another it lets Blake be her own character for once. We get to see who she is on our own. And we can finally shift gears from The Bees Show featuring Some Plot to RWBY without the Y. But again that scene was done horribly with doodoo writing already explained up above. They're gonna use this as some edgy excuse to have the heroes start killing again or grieve or whatever bullshit shock value.

(now that I think of it tho, Neo shoulda killed yang in v2. How the fuck did Raven know she was finna die again. Lmao)

Okay I know I already asked but if you feel like allowing another request, Lan Xichen?

Lan Xichen, oh Lan Xichen.

How I feel about this character No thoughts, feelings only. Flute swirl cute. Fingers? Cute. Gnawable. So elegant and conducts himself so gracefully. What a good boy. What a joy to the eye. Someone should kiss him a lot.

He’s so consciously good to everyone all the time. He’s so invested in being fair and he thinks about the world and how people and he himself relates to it so much. (“If there was no one but you in this world, Young Master Wei, you could do anything at all you wanted, but no man’s an island and we live in a society.”)

Massively fucked up about him always. It’s so fucking unfair. It’s, oh no. Canon gives him no path to recovery. I talked about cathartic negative emotions before, but this one feels too raw. From a shipping perspective it is a pretty satisfying note to end on ngl, but my mind still shies away from such total devastation. I can handle Jin Guangyao passing away, apparently, but letting myself think about Lan Xichen having to deal with the circumstances that led to that for the rest of his life is how I end up with fifty bazillion post-canon scenarios where there’s some closure because fuck that, actually.

All the people I ship romantically with this character Just the one guy. This is now a xiyao free space.

People have probably pointed this out before, but it really struck me the other day that the clothes Jin Guangyao is wearing when he first gets legitimized have the Jin sigil on the damn shoulder area like everyone was wearing as wee baby students during the Cloud Recesses lectures. During those episodes post-Sunshot, he’s not even a proper Jin. He’s a Jin pupil. He’s on PROBATION.

Meanwhile Lan Xichen is wearing the biggest, fanciest clothes he does in the show (I guess you could make an argument for the costume in the Empathy flashback), this is absolutely a man with power. Put them next to each other and look at them for a little while and you have like the largest possible gap in social standing they can have while being recognized gentry.

And this discrepancy was all that I could concentrate on while watching the episodes with that one Jin gathering where Wei Wuxian downs Lan Wangji’s drink and throws his weight around. Lan Xichen waits for the cup-slapping feat. Jin Guangshan to be over and quickly goes through the motions with the end-of-event niceties as a Lan representative and then, in his heavy-ass robe, hurries after just-an-intern Jin Guangyao like wait honey here’s a napkin (handkerchief) from my purse (sleeve) and oh man, he does not personally experience the person that is Jin Guangyao in terms of their social standing.

...Then they stand shoulder-to-shoulder in these fits in later episodes/scenes and pass opinions back and forth without either one being a particularly dominant voice in the conversation, generally sharing an outlook. Cute.

My non-romantic OTP for this character Wei Wuxian! Okay, not really, but I do find all of their scenes together and their varying levels of tensity entertaining. I love Lan Xichen’s moments of gentle trolling in the show, whether or not they’re out of any particular personal fondness. Wei Wuxian shows a certain carefulness around Lan Xichen, I think. It’s a fascinating relationship in all of its iterations.

I should answer Lan Wangji, probably, in that he’s the actually close non-Jin Guangyao relationship Lan Xichen has that I’m most about but, hm. You know how sometimes people ship things in a way where [character A] is the one they’re actually invested in, and [character B] is merely a convenient vessel to make whatever they want to happen with [character A] happen? That’s pretty similar to my feelings on the twin jades.

I like Lan Xichen’s devotion to his brother, and how you can read a whole lot personal sacrifice into it (you will never convince me that the baby brother wasn’t their mother’s darling), but that’s about Lan Xichen, not the both of them. The small gestures of concern from Lan Wangji’s side do make me feel some emotion about them as a unit, but it’s, as has been pointed out, a very uneven relationship. That’s not really a bad thing, and it’s really what you would expect considering everything from their birth order to their family situation, but I don’t feel particularly strongly about Lan Wangji, who necessarily is the main focus both in canon and fandom because of that, so yeah.

My unpopular opinion about this character I suppose there are the usual opinions regarding ignorance, intelligence and passivity. That last one is what I dislike personally; basically every scene Lan Xichen is in he is doing some sort of complex situation management. Unfortunate that a character so resistant to the textual bad guy of the story (mob mentality lol) is such a joke to the fans at times.

However, I’m not here to talk about any of that. I’m here to talk about Lan Xichen and force! Used against people, but also in general. Because I’ve often seen expressed the wish that he should “get” to kick ass more and oh man, I don’t think Lan Xichen should fight, not more.

Okay, let me back up a little, it’s not that it’s a horrible thing that he, like, was very effective and active in a war most of the cast fought in, or goes on night hunts occasionally. But it doesn’t seem like it’s of a particular interest to him, either.

There’s this promo picture for the Untamed that I love where all the other Lan are posing with their swords (not Lan Yi, we’re not counting Lan Yi), but Lan Xichen’s is nowhere in sight and he has his flute, instead. It’s not that it’s not a weapon, also, but it’s so much more than that, and even when wielded as one it has a much wider variety of uses than purely destructive ones. The Lan have their music, but Lan Xichen seems particularly associated with his instrument over his sword.

Or take the live action scene where he blocks Nie Mingjue and people love to focus on that one part, but he... never draws the blade, the scene starts with him standing to the side, because he understands that it would be better if the two more relevant parties in this conflict managed to sort their differences organically between themselves, and ends with him standing aside again, because Meng Yao indicates he wants to take the lead. The bulk of the defending/persuading he’s doing is purely verbal (and eloquent!) and he raises his scabbard only when it’s literally the one thing that’s stopping Meng Yao from being cut in half. It’s the final option.

I like it when characters have “obvious” in-born traits (big, strong) that would seem to lead them down a certain path, but do not in fact suit them particularly well in reality, and when they are allowed to be recognized for qualities they themselves feel more connected to, which to me in Lan Xichen’s case is diplomacy and de-escalation. It can be an interesting reminder every now and then that, yeah, he could probably take control of a scene within seconds if he felt like it, but really only because it underlines how he’s... not doing that. When Zewu-jun has to actually go on the offensive, it feels like a loss. That’s not what this person is here for, fundamentally.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon The eyes-closing thing is nice, it says to me that he often finds the goings-on stressful, and that the way he recharges is by checking out for a moment. He’s worked hard, he should get to do that! Permanently. Let Lan Xichen walk out of society for good.
