Heads up seven up

Taking another tag from @ink-flavored - thank you! Have an excerpt from Avis and Sid's escape back to Rade.

On his external screen, a round space of nothingness opened up behind Christina’s ship, only obvious because of the rim of kaleidoscopic colors around it, and the way it blocked out the distant stars. Her black-silver ship disappeared into it and Avis eased them forward to follow. He could see the warp coming up on them, but he felt their entrance more than saw it, like he was grass in a field being rippled by the wind, like the stomach-dropping feeling of going over a hill too fast, like the sudden wall of scent and steam when he stepped into a kitchen where he was cooking, except it squeezed the air out of his lungs for half a second and left his brain trailing behind, trying to catch up with their rising trajectory inside the tunnel of angry endless colors. “What is she doing…?” Avis murmured.    He hadn’t been in the bridge for the original transit to Ensaum, and he remembered it being kind of uncomfortable even with the screen-windows off, but it hadn’t felt like this. The readout said they were going a normal speed, maybe ten dots faster than they had for launch, but his stomach and his display said they were whipping around corners, taking too-sharp turns that shouldn’t be there, winding through in-between space in a way that didn’t feel possible.

Avi C. Engel — Too Many Souls  (Cruel Nature/Somnimage)

This music floats in a shadowy, liminal space, its minimalist folk textures hanging like mists; the songs feel not so much performed as tuned into, tapping spirit-ridden ambiguities at the edge of perception.  The artist, Avi C. Engel is from Toronto; they’ve been active in that cities out folk scene since the aughts, though only recently as Avi.  With Too Many Souls, they’ve built a hushed dreamworld, full of ectoplasmic tones and ghostly knocks.

The most striking cuts cluster towards the beginning of this album, “Hold This Flame,” especially.  The song seeps spectral emanations, a blinking long tone (maybe keyboard, maybe guitar) flickering like marsh lights in the murk.  Engel sings the title phrase at a near whisper, wreathing its slight tonal fluctuations in doubled vocals.  A guitar jangles in another room.  A rough cut bowing sound—possibly the gudok referenced in the credits—moans softly.  The percussion is kept to a faint tap of fingers on wood.  The parts are so simple, yet the effect electrifies. 

“Ladybird, What’s Wrong?” relies more on melody and beat, but for all that, wafts somewhere outside what you expect from folk.  Here again, the vocals shade each other like smudges of charcoal, in unison mostly, but flaring sometimes into eerie harmony.  The guitar pursues a bucolic ramble studded with blue notes, but there’s not a hint of sunshine in it.  Instead a chill blows in from parts unknown; a room where someone died turns suddenly, inexplicably cold.

Later on in the track listing, Engel turns to more conventional folk forms.  “Woolly Mammoth” has some of Kath Bloom’s wavery spirituality, while “The Oven Bird’s Song” reminds me, just a bit, of Sarah McQuaid.   These songs are lovely, but they don’t leave the same dream-like aftertaste as some of the others. 

Engel closes with a cover, the much-loved, much-interpreted blues spiritual “Wayfaring Stranger.”  In their hands, it takes on an eerie glow, a glitch beat of looped tones under the weathered swoop and sway of that bowed instrument.  The cut is as elemental as ever, and also futuristic, but maybe just outside time and the world we know, and touching those other worlds that we intuit sometimes.

Day seven of the drawing challenge I did back in October 2023!

Unlike all of the other pieces I made for Poketober, this artwork focuses on one of my personal characters and a whole monotype team that I created for them! I had actually imagined the idea before even drafting the prompt list itself, so I was really excited to get to this day! It's definitely not the most refined work I've ever made, and I've certainly improved a lot in terms of character design and drawing human in general since I created this piece, but I still think it's a good display of my progress as an artist!

This character is a newer one of mine (having only been created mid-2023), their name is Avis and they work at the library in their hometown! They have a lot of interest in the history of their planet, and are drawn to nature more than most people they know are! Avis is one of my favorite scrimbles... they are so precious.......

Day seven also marks the last day I worked sequentially for this challenge, so the next one I post will skip a few days ahead! It'll also be the last prompt I post for this challenge, since all the other sketches I made for it were too low quality for me to consider sharing online haha

Le film nous emporte dans un monde étrange séparé en deux. L’histoire d’amour entre Lucy Gray et Coriolanus est compliquée, entre devoir, non-dits et un monde en plein chaos. Si vous n’êtes pas familier à l’histoire de cette saga, il faudra voir un minimum 2 ou 3 fois pour saisir tous les détails du récit assez dense. Deux acteurs crèvent l’écran dans les rôles des deux protagonistes du film.…

This picture is bad but I wanted to draw her characters.... It's not even finished yet but I'm actually excited about the line work!!!!!! Look at it!!!!!!! LOOK AT HIS SHIRT??? HOW DID I DO THAT I HATE DRAWING CLOTHES SO MUCH.... Anyway, from left to right, top to bottom, we have Felix, teasing Ben about his crush for Chika, Chika, who is is shocked about this, Frederick, being amused by everyone, and Ben who is extremely flustered and probably threatening to ... I don't know... Make Microsoft more stupid on Felix's computer and/or just will not help him with his emails.

It will take me a long ass time to get Emet an amaro since that requires getting every dps class to level 80, BUT. in character, he has one, named Amicus. Which just. means "friend". Which is both cute and lazy because emet never puts effort into naming shit unless he feels the need to
