(Ignore what a dork I look like, I am Not photogenic 🥲) Whomever said “Never meet your heroes” was sorely mistaken, because yesterday I had the absolute pleasure of meeting @masonalexanderpark and folks… let me tell you about this precious human being. Spending more money than I have to see a show I hadn’t an inkling about has never been a better decision. The #cabaretmusical was fierce, fun and unfortunately still topical as hell. Every single performer gave it their all and I barely even noticed my legs cramping in the cheap seats 😂 If anyone has been following my other less professional social medias you might know that I’ve lost more than a few friends this year over politics. I hit a deeply rough patch emotionally and I’ve been throwing myself into my work as an author partially to avoid facing what a scary reality we’re currently living in. There’s a storm coming, and anyone with two brain cells and/or a queer friend can see it. Through the scariest year I’ve had in a long time, however, the Quantum Leap fandom has had my back — more specifically, Mason’s fans. I felt it again waiting to see them outside: their fans are so sweet and so friendly and Mason themself is no different (despite, I’m sure, the exhaustion of having just performed). I’m probably rambling a little, but my point is that everyone I’ve talked to surrounding this person has said the same thing: Mason has created something profoundly beautiful just by being themself and being visible. They’ve given a lot of people a lot of hope in a world where Cabaret is still relevant, and their (paraphrased) words to @cassandrahaswell have stuck in my head: “Keep going, if you can. It’s harder for us but it’s so important.” So I’ll keep going. One struggling queer artist to anyone who’ll hear: Keep Going. We need each other right now.
