I’d like to dive deeper into my thoughts on Caleo, bc they have been taking up most of my brainpower rn:
I get where Rick was going with it. I really do. They started off hating each other, Calypso thinking Leo was really annoying and just generally being like “why is this tiny human talking to me?”, but then they grew closer, realised they misunderstood each other, and bonded over common ground. It’s sweet. But the thing is, Rick? You’ve already got a character that did all that with Leo in the previous book!
And his name is Frank.
1. You’ve already set up that dynamic! Why not spend more time focusing on fleshing out that existing arc instead of creating a new one?
2. There’s SO MUCH more potential with angst- Frank being afraid of Leo bc of his fire, Leo being afraid of Frank because he’s twice his size and could easily crush his tiny body under his foot. Leo’s had to learn to survive on his brains and quick-wits in order to protect himself from bullies, and instantly gets defensive when he sees Frank. Frank is very insecure and sensitive, so immediately falls victim to Leo’s jokes. It takes a while for both of them to take those walls down, put aside their differences, and learn to trust each other.
3. It’s just hilarious how got-off-on-the-wrong-foot they were. A reminder that when Frank first met Leo, Leo had just destroyed half of New Rome. They both immediately judged each other completely based on looks- like it’s seriously funny how much you could compare these two to “Pride and Prejudice”. Also, the awkward misunderstanding that was the whole Sammy thing-
4. But they also have a lot more in common that Leo and Calypso ever did- similar trauma with losing their moms, and actually Leo is just as afraid of fire as Frank is. Both are incredibly insecure, and they both feel like they don’t belong among the other Seven.
5. You’ve also got that fun opposites-attract thing- Frank is big and muscular, Leo is built like a twig. Frank is big soft pookie bear, Leo is an absolute menace to society. Frank can turn into animals, Leo is a machines guy. Frank is Roman, Leo is Greek. You get the idea. They were written to juxtapose each other beautifully. They are the Yin to each other’s Yang.
6. They get so much more time together to establish a meaningful relationship. Their arc carries over three books, and we get to form connections as a reader to BOTH Leo AND Frank separately beforehand, so the payoff is a lot more satisfying. It takes time for them to open up to each other, and when they do it feels like they earned it. Calypso and Leo got a couple of chapters, that’s it.
It doesn’t have to be romantic! Leo can heal his trauma with friends and found family, learning to love and accept himself, learning that he doesn’t actually need the attention of a hot girl to be valid. He can find his place among his brethren with the help of all his friends, even Frank- the most unlikely of friends.
I wish Rick had put more effort into fleshing out the platonic relationships instead of just conforming to romance-centric ideals of “love fixes everything!” It’s lazy, and boring, and has been done to death. Platonic friendships make up 95% of our relationships, yet they are SERIOUSLY underrepresented in media. I’m calling for more interesting platonic dynamics. Leo and Frank could’ve been so much more, if Rick had actually taken the time to build on their relationship, and focused less on “Leo Needs a Girlfriend”!
So, when I say “Everything Caleo did, Valzhang could do better”- THAT is what I meant.
Also, Jason is so much better for Leo than Calypso, but that’s a whole other post.
[Edit: And I have made that post! You can find it here]

The Curse of Oenone (Leo Valdez xFem!Oc)
A/N: Fun fact! Leo x Echo is my favorite noncanon ship, they would've been much better than Caleo tbh -Danny Words: 2,148 Series' Masterlist Previous Chapter // Next Chapter Listen to: 'Cloud 9' -by Paravi
Tumblr media
VI: I Can't Beat the Simping Allegations
"Who did you see in Nemesis, Ara?"
The question is so straightforward it catches her off guard. Leo is allowed to ask that kind of stuff, but at the same time, he should shut up and mind his business.
"Aunt Rosa was the one who kicked you out, right?" Ara asks back.
Leo makes a face. "Yeah..." he moves on to Hazel so Ara can't keep asking about Aunt Rosa. "What Nemesis said about your brother..."
"Nico," Hazel's voice cracks. "He found me in the Underworld. He brought me back to the mortal world and convinced the Romans at Camp Jupiter to accept me. I owe him for my second chance at life. If Nemesis is right, and Nico's in danger... I have to help him."
Ara wants to help Nico, even if they have a complicated history. She doesn't hate the boy like that. "He probably never mentioned me..."
"I think he did," Hazel replies. "Sometimes he'd talk about people he met throughout the years, he'd mention this girl a lot... Lily Saggio. He said she's Italian too."
"That's our best friend," Ara responds. "She understands your brother better than anyone else."
"You're Birdy, right? That's how he calls you," Hazel gives her a sympathetic smile. "He respects you."
"What? Really?" She frowns.
Is Ara the only one holding onto the past? Or was Nico keeping things hidden because he couldn't give the context to Hazel? The truth is, she avoided him for a whole year thinking it was the only way to keep a civil relationship, and now she doesn't really know him.
If they rescue him, maybe they should talk without getting defensive, maybe he'll surprise her in a good way.
Tumblr media
"Ara, stop threatening to hit Nico with your book!"
"Then tell him to stay on his side!" I whine. "His stupid jacket is too big..."
I glare at Nico. We found him in this weird farm that's placed above a labyrinth's entrance, and for some reason, everyone thought it was a good idea to sit me next to this jerk.
We're trying to ignore each other, but at some point, he starts to squirm and insists he has important business to attend to with the owner of this dumpster, Geryon.
"He's good at making clothes? Is he going to cut your jacket in half so you stop looking like a dwarf?" I taunt him. "Can't even see your hands in that..."
"I'm not talking to you," he clenches his jaw.
"Lily's worried about you. You left without saying a word, and she's your friend."
"She thinks my father will kill her if I get hurt," he corrects me.
I frown. "So she deserves to fear for her life because of your tantrum?"
"My sister dying is not reason enough to be mad?" He turns to me with angry dark eyes.
"I didn't say that. I'm just telling you how Lily feels. It'd be nice if you went back to camp, but you can stay here and die for all I care."
"Ara!" Percy looks at me in shock from his cart. "Don't say that!"
I look away and sink into my seat, sulking.
Nico's voice is a little quieter this time. "You're still training?"
"Obviously," I glance at him with disdain. "You're still a shitty swordsman?"
His face turns red. "The labyrinth is above your skills, but if you die, you and Percy will get what you both deserve."
"Nico!" Annabeth gasps.
"You're a crybaby and an idiot who follows the ill advice of dead men!" I bark.
Everyone's looking at us from their carts unable to stop our argument. Nico and I continue to fight each other all the way to Geryon's place.
Tumblr media
Ara sees some boulders ahead. "There, let's take a look..."
She reaches the top easily, Hazel climbs after her and Leo is the last one to go up, but he slips and both girls reach out simultaneously, leaving them in an awkward position with Leo's face only a few inches apart from theirs.
"Um, thanks."
He lets go of Hazel's hand first and uses Ara's to steady himself. That should give her some reassurance, but it only increases her torment, because she can feel the anxiety coming from him. They cannot stay there huddled together without risking one of them slipping again, so she slips forward.
"I'll check the other side."
"Wait, you don't know—"
"It's my job," she says, eyes darting away so she doesn't have to look at him.
Ara's so distracted by her feelings that she doesn't see the young girl beside her, even though the girl makes a huge effort to be noticed. It's only until Hazel and Leo start talking again that Ara realizes she's there.
"...Cursed boy she mentioned." Utters a voice beside her.
Ara draws Almighty out of instinct. When she points it in the direction of the voice, she finds a young girl, wide-eyed and petrified. "Who are you?" She points the sword at the girl's chest. "Step back!"
"Step back," the girl raises her hands in surrender and stumbles backward.
"Ara? What is it?" Hazel tries to focus her gaze. "Wait, is that a person?"
"A person," the girl shakes her head miserably.
"Are you the cursed kid Nemesis mentioned?" Leo's brow furrows. "But you're a girl."
"You're a girl."
"Excuse me?"
"Excuse me."
"You're Echo," Ara studies the girl. "You came back! So you can't be a nymph, right? Nymphs don't have souls—Was I wrong to believe you were—?"
"Ara, she can't answer you," Leo slips down the boulder to join them, and Hazel follows suit. "You can't, can you?"
"Can you," the girl shakes her head again.
"What are you doing here?" Ara continues with the interrogatory anyway. "Nemesis's cursed boy... Is it him?"
"Him," Echo's eyes glisten with longing.
"Oh." Ara turns to the others with newfound energy. "I know who's guarding the celestial bronze."
Tumblr media
Nymphs are always fighting over a random dude.
"Alright, ladies, make room!" Ara uses charmspeak. "The faster we do our job, the faster you can go back to staring..." her voice quivers when she spots him. "At your man."
Leo sneaks his way through and whistles lowly. "Dang."
"He's gorgeous," Hazel breathes out.
"I am," the young man in front of them sighs dreamily. "I am so gorgeous."
"To die for," Ara hums in agreement, but she's looking at him like he's a mythical creature, which he kind of is. "Is he glowing?"
She realizes too late that's his soul light, therefore the others can't see what she's seeing, but they don't get confused with her ask anyway, because they're too distracted by the man's looks.
"It's the reflection of that thing," Leo scowls at the celestial bronze in the water.
Ara crouches next to the young man like she's dealing with an endangered species: Mister Universe, the last of his kind.
"How is your hair shiny yet not greasy?" She asks quietly, mostly to herself. "I'm sure you haven't bathed in centuries but you don't smell so bad—And don't get me started on your skin! That jawline—"
"Ara, you know who this guy is?" Hazel interrupts her.
"Narcissus," Ara's eyes are fixed on him. "He's what some of my siblings wish they were." She grins, and her expression only means trouble. "Watch this..."
The girl dips her finger in the water distorting the surface. Narcissus tries to push her away, but he misses and only grazes her shoulder, too desperate to find his reflection again. Ara laughs and reaches out again, but Hazel stops her.
"Wait—What's going on here? Why did Echo bring us here?"
"Echo was a nymph like us," one of the fangirls replies with contempt. "A long time ago, but she was a total chatterbox! Gossiping, blah, blah, blah, all the time."
"A nymph?" Ara frowns. "So was I wrong to assume—"
"Ara, focus," Hazel prevents her from derailing.
Ara dusts off her hands, gets up, and looks around trying to find a solution. She can tell this crowd won't make it easy, they want the cute guy to stay. Leo takes her place next to Narcissus while the nymphs keep arguing with each other.
"So, Narcissus. What's up?"
"Could you move?" The young man says without looking up. "You're ruining the view."
Leo turns to Ara as if asking Can you believe this guy? then leans forward to inspect the celestial bronze lying at the bottom of the pond. Ara can't help but compare the young men: Next to Narcissus, her boyfriend is a run-of-the-mill dude, Narcissus's features are masculine and chiseled, while Leo's are ordinary and childish.
However, to her, Leo's are familiar and more human. The sunshine bounces off the water's surface and hits his face in a way that reminds her of their soul light, his curls are a mix of copper red and golden that resemble the colors of a campfire. Even while standing beside Narcissus, Leo still holds all of Ara's attention.
It doesn't take away from the fact that he's not placing boundaries on Hazel, so realizing how deeply in love she is, is only frightening her even more.
"Right, great view," Leo looks back at Narcissus. "Happy to move, but if you're not using it, could I just take that sheet of bronze?"
"No. I love him. He's so gorgeous."
Leo looks back at Ara and her only reply is a shrug. This is the bronze they ought to take, and the sun is already setting.
"Man," the boy tries again, this time annoyed. "You do realize that you're looking at yourself in the water, right?"
"I am so great," he reaches down to touch his reflection, then decides against it. "No, I can't make ripples. That ruins the image. Wow... I am so great."
"Yeah," Leo says through gritted teeth. "But if I took the bronze, you could still see yourself in the water. Or here..." he pulls out a little mirror from his tool belt. "I'll trade you."
"Hernán Cortés would be so proud of you," Ara murmurs.
The boy looks up in outrage. "Ara, don't ever say that to me."
"Even you carry a picture of me?" Narcissus glances at the mirror before going back to the pond. "I don't blame you. I am gorgeous. Thank you." He grabs the small item and puts it aside. "But I already have a much better image. The color flatters me, don't you think?"
"I'm starting to suspect Narcissus isn't the brightest flower in the pond," Ara says sarcastically.
Echo sits beside the young man, hopelessly trying to make him look away for just a moment. Hazel pulls Leo and Ara for a private talk, and they gather away from the nymphs. Echo joins them sadly.
"Can't you just charmspeak him into giving us the piece?"
"Narcissus is too in love with himself to fall for my words. And the nymphs want him to stay, they won't listen to reason. But I got a sword and I know how to knock people unconscious?" Ara offers.
"Maybe that's our best bet. Nemesis was right," Hazel replies, almost as upset as Leo was a few minutes ago. "Some demigods can't change their nature. Narcissus is going to stay there until he dies again."
"No," Leo says with surprising determination.
"No," Echo repeats earnestly.
"We need that bronze," he presses. "If we take it away, it might give Narcissus a reason to snap out of it. Echo could have a chance to save him."
"A chance to save him," the nymph nods keenly.
"It could also make several dozen nymphs very angry with us," Hazel points out. "And Narcissus might still know how to shoot his bow."
"I wouldn't worry about that," Ara responds. "His arrows are brittle, and the string of his bow won't work properly, it's too old."
"How do you know that?" Hazel asks with surprise.
"Because I have eyes," she raises a brow. "And my friend Lily is an archer, I know how bows and arrows are supposed to look like when they're in good condition."
"Hazel," Leo continues, his eyes brightening. "Your power with precious metal—Can you just detect it, or can you actually summon it to you?"
"Sometimes I can summon it. I've never tried with a piece of Celestial bronze that big before," Hazel ponders. "I might be able to draw it to me through the earth, but I'd have to be fairly close. It would take a lot of concentration, and it wouldn't be fast."
"Be fast," Echo says excitedly.
Leo curses under his breath. He's got the broadest repertoire of bad words Ara has ever heard, and Michael tended to use pretty strong language on the daily.
"All right. We'll have to try something risky. Hazel, how about you try to summon the bronze from right here? Make it sink through the sand and tunnel over to you, then grab it and run for the ship."
"But Narcissus is looking at it all the time!"
"All the time," Echo pouts.
"That'll be my job," Leo makes a face. "Echo, Ara, and I will cause a distraction."
"Distraction?" Echo repeats.
"I'll explain," he assures her. "Are you willing?"
"Willing," the nymph nods.
"Doll?" He asks Ara making use of his cute puppy eyes.
It's not fair that he's got her wrapped around his finger like this. Usually, she's the one who makes others do stuff for her by pouting and being cute.
"Just tell us your plan," she sighs in defeat.

Many people misinterpreted Calypso's curse in Ogygia. It's not "cursed to automatically fall in love with the hero who washed up on her eternal island" but "cursed to stay on her prison island and being sent a hero who she can't help fall in love with" a.k.a. the heroes have a quality/personality that is worth being loved !!! She did not helplessly fall in love with a hero just because of the cruel curse, she fell in love with the hero by herself!! By her own heart's desires ❗❗❗
Die mad about this🙄

My opinion on riordanverse ships (canon and fanon) P.1
Percabeth: 10/10- Adorable, love their whole dynamic and they're literally one of my favorite fictional couples ever <3
Jiper/Jasper: 5/10- I felt like there was no chemistry at all, and their relationship was forced which made it worse. They could've been a better couple if they had more development, but overall, I don't really like it
Caleo: 0/10- Don't even get me started. I hate this ship so much. First of all, Calypso is literally THOUSANDS of years old and Leo is 15 (or 16 idk). Either way, that is disgusting. Just because Calypso looks like a teenager does not mean that their relationship is okay. Also, Calypso constantly degrades and insults Leo, who already has self-esteem issues. And then there's the whole mamacita thing- which I hate.
Frazel: 3/10- I don't like the age gap here either, but yall got really defensive last time so I'm not gonna explain further on that. Even if you don't count that, I don't think they had chemistry and I would have liked a platonic relationship. Also, it bothers me that everyone in the series had to have a significant other, and I would've liked to see some quality friendships.
(If you have specific ships you'd like to me talk about lmk!)

Things We Lost in the Fire, ch 34
aka Caleo uni au
Fic summary: Calypso starts studying at a new university, but to her annoyance her new flatmate is a loud mouthed mechanic who also likes to sneak his dog in whenever. Chapter summary: At Waystation, please don't ask me what part
A/N: Woop, not as long a wait as earlier! I am kind of surprised that this chapter ended up being easier for me to write than the previous one despite the emotional stuff L&C are talking about in it. But I'm also extremely happy I got it done!
Hmmm, should I say anything else? I guess I just hope you guys enjoy this monster chapter! (almost 5k words, a lot for me) And please, please let me know what you think of this chapter because I really, /really/ want to know!
Words: 4900+
Genre: romance & hurt/comfort
Warnings: none
previous chapter / AO3
...
It took Calypso a while to collect herself after her breakdown. On one hand, she felt bad that she had yelled at Leo like that, especially in front of Georgina. But on the other hand, she felt he had deserved it. When Leo had asked her if something was wrong, she had already been emotional because of the song and the feelings it had made her realize. When she added the frustrations caused by the ‘present incident’ and also her fear for her future and what her father might do to that, she was kind of surprised that she had managed to stay calm even that long.
After she had made sure that the redness on her face had faded a bit and she would be able to speak in a normal tone, she finally joined Leo’s family who had just started preparing the dinner. Leo himself wasn’t present; apparently Festus had been expecting a long Christmas walk, but Calypso still wondered briefly if that was only an excuse. Luckily she did quite enjoy cooking while listening to Jo and Emmie’s stories because that gave her something else to think about.
The dinner guests arrived about an hour later. Among them was a man named ‘Lit’ (Calypso had to raise her eyebrow at the nickname), who apparently took care of an actual living elephant among other things. With him was the ‘Golden Haired Dude’ whom Georgina had mentioned earlier, only he had dyed his hair brown recently. He introduced himself as Lester and he mentioned liking music, which piqued Calypso’s interest but she didn’t have a chance to ask more about it during the dinner. The two had also brought Lester’s young ‘master’ Meg with them. Calypso was still too distraught by the earlier events to really focus on getting to know those people better, but somehow they, especially the two men, seemed to be even louder than Leo was usually. Meg seemed nice, though, and Calypso found out that they shared an interest in gardening. She still noticed wishing that the dinner would be over fast so she could just withdraw into her room and try to calm down a bit.
***
”Alright, what’s going on here?”
Jo and Emmie dragged Leo and Calypso out of the dining room after the dinner. Calypso didn’t understand why; they had managed to behave perfectly neutrally while the guests had been there, at least in her opinion. Well, honestly speaking neither of them had talked much - mostly when they were asked some standard questions like ‘what do you study again?’ - but that was probably for the best. Otherwise Calypso might have said something she would have regretted.
“What do you mean?” Leo asked Jo defensively. “It’s not like I step danced on the dining table or anything like that! We were behaving just fine!”
“Mr. Valdez,” Jo used her most threatening voice, which actually intimidated even Calypso who had gotten used to many kinds of threatening in the past. “In your case that means that something is definitely going on. I have not gone through a single Christmas dinner with you where you haven’t tried to tell at least one of your favorite Santa jokes. And yes, don’t think we have just forgotten what happened this morning.”
“Besides, Calypso’s eyes have been red since this afternoon,” Emmie added. So she had noticed, Calypso sighed in her mind. She had made sure to wash her face carefully with cool water after her little mental breakdown and had even added some concealer under her eyes to hide the redness but of course these two wouldn’t miss a thing.
“And we did notice your glares at the table,” Jo finally finished the chastising.
“Listen, moms.” Leo crossed his arms. “I appreciate you trying to help but this is between Cal and me.”
“Alright,” Jo said. “Then how about you try to deal with it while doing the dishes.”
“Wait, what?” Leo protested. “Georgie needs my help with building the 1000 piece puzzle she got from the neighbors; I promised her I would…”
“Georgina can wait,” Emmie said firmly. “Leo, Calypso is our guest and no matter what your issue is, you two are adults and you should be able to talk it out maturely.”
Calypso had already learned to know the two women well enough to be able to tell that once they had decided something, you wouldn’t be able to change their minds easily. She too did want to protest because this was not how she wanted to do her ‘grand talk’ with Leo, but it seemed rather pointless. They really did need to talk, and the sooner they’d get it done, the sooner they might be able to find some sort of normalcy in their situation. Maybe. Calypso didn’t think their relationship had ever been particularly ‘normal’.
“Alright, we’ll do the dishes,” she said eventually. “But I don’t know what happens after that. I guess it depends.”
“Hmm, I guess we can’t ask more than that,” Emmie nodded. “OK, we’ll leave you two to it. And if anything breaks, remember, you will be replacing it!” she referred to the fancier dinnerware they had been using that day.
“As if I would even dream of breaking your plates,” Leo mumbled when his mothers were already on their way out of the room. Calypso almost snorted at his comment before she remembered that she was mad at him, and simply made a sound that was a bit like a sneeze.
An awkward silence fell in the room once the flatmates were alone.
“Well…” Calypso finally broke it after they had been scrubbing the dishes for several minutes without saying anything.
“Yeah…?”
“Are we going to talk about what happened today or not?” She folded her arms, dropping some soap water on the floor in the process.
“I don’t know, are we?” Leo attempted to provoke her, but he was lacking his usual spunk. When Calypso kept glaring at him, he finally sighed. “Listen. I know I acted like an idiot earlier. What else is new? But the thing is, this day is just… always getting to me. I can’t help it. I know it sounds pathetic, but…”
Leo was stopped by Calypso’s hand around his wrist. “I know what happened to your mother. I mean, the full story. Jo and Emmie told me. What happened was really, really horrible, but that doesn’t excuse you yelling like that when I was only trying to help. You also really made us worry when you ran away like that. I was afraid something was going to happen to you! And when you came back, you were acting like nothing had happened! Can you imagine how frustrated that made me feel?” Nearly tears in her eyes again, she finished. “It made me feel that you don’t care about us!”
“Calypso, calm down! I’m sorry, OK?” Leo raised his voice. “Yeah, I was selfish. And yeah, I shouldn’t have reacted like that. I didn’t think much at that point. I know it doesn’t excuse what I did but let me at least explain why I did what I did before you blow up the whole house.”
“Alright,” Calypso gave in. “Do explain.”
“Every day since my mom died…” Leo started, emphasizing the two first words, “I’ve been feeling guilty about her death. Some days I feel better, but it’s always worse during Christmases. Because that’s when she died.”
Calypso had a feeling that Leo wanted to say more, so she waited quietly, trying to look encouraging.
“This morning, before our present opening, I had a nightmare. Yeah, you probably already guessed what it was about. I saw how the fire started - I had left my blueprints too close to the fireplace and it just… spread - and how the policeman told me my mom had gone inside the house when… when I was lying unconsciously in our backyard. She had been looking for me because she didn’t know I had managed to escape.” He tried to clear his throat but his voice was still cracking when he finished: “My mom was my only family and she died because I was stupid and careless.”
While Calypso and Leo had had plenty of arguments in the past, she had rarely seen him as bitter as when he said those final words. It seemed as if he was in physical pain because he was so angry at himself. She wanted to say something encouraging, but she knew from experience that there was nothing that she could say in a situation like that that could make it better. Kind words didn’t bring the people you loved back. She did, however, try to show with gestures that she understood – she really did – and she moved closer to him, gently putting her hand on his shoulder.
Leo attempted to collect himself for a moment before he continued, blinking his eyes furiously: “It didn’t help me mentally that my aunt was forced to take me in after the fire. You can probably imagine her reaction. “You mutt, you really think you deserve to live after what happened to your mother?” Yeah. That happened. She told that to an 8-year-old boy. I’m almost thankful to her that she did eventually send me to a foster home. Only almost though.”
Calypso remembered his stories of the foster homes he had been in and understood what he meant.
“I hope that this explains why I don’t want to deal with fire now. Not because I’m afraid of the fire itself. But because I’m afraid of what it could do to people I love. So, yeah, that is why I was not thrilled to get those matches on this particular day.”
Calypso had to admit that after hearing the story from Leo himself, his reaction made more sense.
“I’m… sorry. About what happened to you and about the matches. I really picked an awful time to give them to you. But I still wish you had told me all that earlier instead of just waiting to blow up. And I never meant anything hurtful; I didn’t mean you need to use them any time soon… I just wanted to show you that I have faith in you. Because I do!
Leo was quiet for a while.
“Yeah… I know you were only trying to help,” he sighed finally. “I don’t know. I had such a good day yesterday and then one night turned it upside down. It’s not your fault. Some things… just had been building inside me for too long.”
“I know how you feel,” Calypso said quietly.
“You do?” Leo asked.
“Yeah. Um, I think it’s my turn to open up about some things. You told me your story so I should do the same.”
“Okay, go on,” he encouraged, seeming curious even though he was still visibly upset.
Calypso took a moment to decide where to start from. “As you’ve probably noticed, I’ve been battling with some ghosts of my past for a long time now, and this fall has been quite a rollercoaster for me emotionally.”
Leo nodded at her.
“I thought that when I would move out… escape from my father’s mansion… I could just put all that behind me and start from the beginning. And in a way I was able to do that. I do enjoy living here. I like my studies – even though it has been very different compared to what I did at home… sometimes difficult... but I’ve never been one to sit around when I know I have work to do so I. That’s the way I’ve been raised.”
She looked up from her hands. “I’m also really grateful that I’ve met all the wonderful people who have become my friends here. Yeah, believe it or not, you included. But… All that makes my fear even stronger. I’m afraid that it all will be taken from me again.”
Leo frowned. “I don’t understand now. Why would that happen? Is it because of your father? You mentioned something about that once.”
Calypso was on the verge of tears again but she bit her lip and tried to put herself together. “I… I did something awful when I was 16… and my father wants to make sure that no one will ever hear about it.”
“What happened?” Leo asked.
“I… had some… um, relationship issues, for the lack of a better word. My boyfriend of that time had discovered that his previous girlfriend had moved back to New York, and, surprise, he wanted to end our relationship. He wasn’t the first to do that. That’s what always happened. They always had someone who was more important to them than me.” Calypso rubbed her forehead tiredly. “I was pretty down after that because the 16-year-old me thought that no one would care about me.”
Leo looked at her with a ‘that’s bullshit’ kind of expression, but for once he said nothing. She could still see that he had sympathy in his eyes.
“So, one day pretty soon after that guy went back to his ex, I was invited to a party. Most of the people there were a bit older than me so yeah, there was alcohol involved. I was shy and still really upset about what had recently happened to me so I thought that maybe a drink or two would make me feel better. But I drank way more than that because I just wanted to forget about everything for a while. Someone at the party knew my big sister Zoë and thought that it would be the best for me if she’d come to get me home before something bad happened to me. Well, ironically…” Calypso’s vision started blurring as she attempted to finish the sentence. “Zoë would probably still be here if she hadn’t come to pick me up.”
She swiped her face into her hand very ungracefully and sniffed a couple of times before she was able to continue.
“So… she arrived and when we got into the car, she naturally started scolding me. I don’t remember anymore what exactly she said but I know I deserved it. But at that moment I was being an idiot so of course we got into an argument. And she didn’t…” She couldn’t hold the tears in any longer, instinctively searching for support from Leo’s shoulder.
“It’s OK, Cal… You don’t have to tell me more if you don’t want to,” Leo tried to calm her down, awkwardly patting her back.
“Can you hand me some of that paper towel?” she sobbed when she managed to get some words out of her mouth, pointing at the roll on the table. “I must look like a mess.”
Leo attempted to give her an encouraging smile even though Calypso knew that must have been hard because he was probably feeling as bad as she was on the inside.
“R-right, here,” he said and pulled one piece of the paper towel from the roll, handing it to her.
“Thanks,” Calypso mumbled and swept her nose and cheeks into the paper.
“No problem.”
Calypso chuckled at the irony of the situation while she was attempting to dry the last tears. “Why is it that I was the one who was worried about you… and now I’m the one who ended up crying?”
“Guess we’re both pretty messed up,” Leo concluded for her. “But it’s OK. We can… you know… try to support each other?” It was more of a question than a statement, and Calypso assumed Leo was still unsure if she’d let him stay in her life.
“Yeah… maybe we can. But, um… I should finish my story.”
“Take your time.” Leo nodded at her.
“So…” she finally said. “We were fighting. And she got so distracted that she… I mean, neither of us… noticed that there was a car coming really fast from behind a curve and the road was pretty narrow and… before she had time to brake… the car hit us.”
Calypso’s heart was still beating rapidly when she remembered that situation, but taking a couple of deep breaths, she managed to avoid another crying fit. A couple of tears fell on her cheeks but her voice turned angry rather than sad.
“She… she died almost instantly. I don’t know how I got so lucky that I ended up with only a couple of broken bones and bruises. The driver of the other car was injured quite badly but from what I heard, also survived. I bet my father was relieved about that,” she finished bitterly.
“Cal…” Leo tried to say something but she interrupted him.
“If you say your mother’s death was your fault, so was Zoë’s death my fault. She would still be here if I hadn’t messed up at that party. She would still be here if we hadn’t been arguing on the road. So, I know exactly how you feel.”
“Yeah… there are some similarities there…” Leo admitted. “But I don’t think it was your fault. It was an accident.”
“Similarly to what happened to your mom,” Calypso noted.
Leo decided to not continue with that topic. “One question: how does your father have anything to do with this?”
Calypso sighed out of frustration. “I told you once that he basically…” She decided to change her approach. “Um, after that accident he didn’t let me go anywhere anymore, especially unsupervised because if someone had found out that I had something to do with my sister’s death… that would probably have ruined his career. Instead…” she said darkly, “he was able to take advantage of people’s sympathy. ‘Oww, poor Mister Astal… he must have been devastated after such a loss!’ But you know what?! I know… he couldn’t have cared less. The only thing that man cares about is his money and power.”
Calypso noticed that Leo was clenching his jaw. “I… I haven’t even met the guy but I really, really hate him. Trust me, I’d punch him in the face if I happened to meet him. Hard. But honestly, I think he deserves way more than that. He’d deserve…”
Leo proceeded to tell Calypso what exactly he thought her father would deserve, and weirdly enough, somehow that made her feel slightly better. Sure, nothing would ever give her back the years she had lost because of him. But at least she knew she had people on her side, and that was the most she could ask for in her situation.
“Even though I support your plan 100%... which by the way isn’t something I expected to say… I’d prefer it if you never, ever had to meet him.” Calypso shook her head. “I’ve already told you that he is capable of ruining lives if he wants to.”
“And I’ve already told you that I don’t care,” Leo said challengingly.
“Yeah, but I do!” Calypso exclaimed angrily. “How do you think I’d feel if he hurt you, because of me?”
That finally stopped Leo from arguing with her. Maybe he realized that he would feel just as awful if something happened to her.
“Okay. I won’t be hunting him down right now. But I’m still sticking to what I said after the Halloween party. If he ever does anything to you, know that I will help you. No matter what it costs.” Calypso looked at him with awe. No one had told her before that they’d be willing to risk so much for her sake.
“Why… why would you do that for me?” she whispered.
Fire was burning in Leo’s eyes. Maybe because he was angry… maybe for some other reason too. Before Calypso could prepare herself, he announced without hesitation:
“Because I love you, Cal! It’s as simple as that!”
There. The words Calypso had been both hoping and dreading to hear were out now, and there was no way to take them back. She couldn’t say she was completely surprised by his confession after everything that had happened since Halloween, but still… to hear him say it aloud… it still felt different than just knowing that it might be the case. Only a few hours earlier she herself had come to accept the fact that her own feelings were deeper than just some regular crush, and now this… She felt extremely overwhelmed.
“Don’t say that,” Calypso mumbled, not able to look him in the eyes at that moment. “I’ve heard people tell that to me before… and they’ve never meant it…”
“Yeah, but I do!” Leo kept insisting. “You should know me well enough by now to know that I don’t say things I don’t mean!”
Finally, Calypso lifted her eyes from her hands to Leo’s face. He was watching her with a dead serious expression, but at closer look she noticed that there was also a certain softness, gentleness in his eyes. The kind that made her knees feel weak.
“I know that,” she said quietly, and before she could stop herself, she stepped closer to Leo and took the towel he had been using to dry the dishes from his hands and threw it on the table. Her heart was racing and she felt a bit shaky, but she moved even closer, leaving only a couple of centimeters between them. Before she progressed from there, though, she very lightly brushed his cheek with her thumb, stopping at the corner of his lip, to let him know of her intentions. For a moment he just stared at her dumbfounded before nodding slightly while blushing furiously, and that was the only sign she needed. Moving both of her hands to the sides of his face, she rose on her tiptoes and kissed him fully on the mouth.
Calypso still remembered how the kisses she had previously experienced had often felt like the other one had been in a rush to get somewhere, possibly out of his real love interest’s sight. But this time was different. When their lips touched, Leo froze for one moment (Calypso hoped it was because he was thinking ‘whoa, can’t believe this is happening!’ and not because he was horrified), but he quickly recovered from that and responded, at first slowly, lightly, but when she kept encouraging him, he got more eager. Before he got ahead of himself, though, he stopped and looked at her straight into eyes as if to ask if it was OK. That was how Calypso knew that he wanted this just as much as she did.
“Keep going,” she whispered, and Leo did what he was told to do. He pressed his lips firmly against hers and sunk his fingers into her hair, sending sparks down Calypso’s spine. Warmth spread through her entire body when he tilted her head slightly to get better access to her lips and deepened the kiss. She was surprised by how soft his lips felt against her mouth (for some reason when she had been picturing this situation – which, yes, had happened more than once, she had to admit to herself – she had imagined them a bit rough, like his hands) and she felt a little light headed as Leo’s tongue gently poke her lips to ask her to part them. She happily reciprocated and discovered he tasted like the gingerbread cookies she and Georgina had baked, which probably meant he had liked them.
Even though Calypso would have liked it to continue longer, soon they needed to break away to get some air. Her face was red, she was panting and somehow her hair had also gotten messy in the process, but she didn’t care. Why would she when she felt loved possibly for the first time in her life? Leo was looking at her gently and she wanted to reach in and continue from where they were left off, but before that she felt she needed to say something.
“Don’t tell your mothers that happened,” she mumbled while resting her head against his shoulder, trying to sound serious but knowing she was failing.
“Don’t worry, I wouldn’t dream of it.” Leo stopped stroking her hair when she lifted her head from his shoulder to see his expression. Leo’s eyes were so unlike they had only been about 15 minutes earlier when Jo and Emmie had ‘forced’ them to talk. Back then they had looked almost black and emotionless, but now they were back to the lighter chocolate brown Calypso was used to, sparkling happily at her comment. It made her very relieved to see him like that; she must have done something right after all.
“Good.” She nodded and looked at him expectantly. Leo picked up the hint, but instead of kissing her right away, he lifted her on a kitchen cabinet so she wouldn’t have to stand on her tiptoes (not that Leo was tall; Calypso was just that short). Calypso rolled her eyes at the gesture, but when Leo took her face into his hands, she forgot all about it and leaned in for another kiss. Unfortunately, this time they hadn’t taken into account that there was a cupboard right behind Calypso’s head so when they started leaning more backwards as the kiss got more heated, she hit her head against it. “Oh great, of course when I finally get to kiss the girl this would happen,” he rubbed the back of his neck and looked apologetic, but Calypso just chuckled.
“Don’t worry about it. Maybe it was a good reminder for us that there would probably be better places to do this than the kitchen of your parents’ home.”
“Yeah, maybe…” Leo had to agree. Before Calypso got off the cabinet, though, she pressed a light kiss on his forehead. She didn’t know why she did that; it just felt good at that moment.
When she pulled away from him, Leo asked, sounding a bit unsure: “So… does that mean that you love me too?”
Calypso shook her head, kind of amused that this boy who could figure out a really difficult math question within minutes was so unsure about her feelings. “What do you think, idiot?”
“I don’t know… I still wasn’t entirely convinced by those kisses,” he attempted to joke but quickly received a fist on his arm. “Ow! That hurt!”
“Not a good moment to joke,” Calypso stated.
“Fine, sorry,” Leo said while rubbing his arm.
“You are lucky that I happen to love you.” Calypso stuck her tongue out at him, but before he had time to say anything, she took his hand and squeezed it reassuringly.
“Yeah. I am,” Leo said, completely seriously this time. “But how did we get to this point from my… um, issues anyway?”
Now that Leo mentioned it, Calypso realized it was a valid question. It felt like everything she had felt that fall had been squeezed into a very small package and then suddenly just popped open. But she also felt relieved that they had finally managed to speak up about what was bothering them.
“I don’t know, to be honest,” she replied. “But I’m kind of glad that Jo and Emmie closed us here.”
“Yeah. Me too,” Leo agreed.
“Listen…” Calypso kept her eyes on their intertwined hands. “I don’t know what is going to happen. You know, with my father and everything. But you made me realize that I can’t just give up without a fight. That I can’t get what I want if I don’t try. So I’ve decided… I want to try this… us… if that’s what you want as well.”
“Are you crazy? I’d be the stupidest guy on earth to say no to you,” Leo said dramatically. “Even though this will sound cheesy as hell, I’ve noticed that I’m happier when I spend time with you. You know, just cooking, chilling, whatever. So, I’m thinking… Maybe together we will also be able to kick our issues’ asses. I will be working on getting over my fear. And… I guess I will also have to try harder to open up… about my past and all that… It probably isn’t always gonna be easy but hey, feel free to call me out if you need to.”
“You bet I will, Leo Valdez.” Calypso smiled at him, a real, genuine smile. “And I too will do my best to talk about what’s bothering me more. I realize now that I should have done it way earlier.”
“We are some stubborn idiots, huh?” Leo gave her a lopsided smile.
“Yeah.”
“Um, so… just to be clear… What do we tell the others? About… us?” Leo asked after a while.
“I’m thinking… maybe it would be better if we don’t tell everyone quite yet. I’ve had a lot of bad experiences in the past as you know so I’d prefer to keep it just between us for a while. You know, just to make sure that… nothing goes wrong.”
“Alright, that’s fair enough,” Leo agreed. “Although, nothing stays a secret from my family for a long time. It’s like they’re psychics or something.”
Calypso chuckled. “Can’t disagree with you on that. I swear that I’ve known them for a few days and they already know more about me than I do.”
“You’ll get used to it, though,” Leo reassured her.
“Hopefully so. Well… what should we do now?” Calypso asked tentatively.
“They’re probably expecting us to be done with the dishes by now…” Leo glanced at the clock on the wall. “But… I guess one more kiss won’t hurt?”
“I would hope so,” Calypso said and reached for him, pressing another kiss to his mouth.

Unpopular PJO/HOO/TOA opinions
This is gonna be wordy but I’m not sorry for it.
Percabeth is hella overrated. It’s nice, but I would prefer other ships over it and some of y’all Percabeth shippers are scary as hell
I love TOA. A lot people don’t like it because it doesn’t include the main 7 and another topic that I’ll mention later but honestly, I could care less. I’m glad that the others aren’t there other than cameos. It means they’re getting a chance to heal after everything and honestly, good for them. People like to cast TOA as an unnecessary spinoff that didn’t need to be included yet it gives y’all the type of character development you scream and beg for in other books. It’s literally the perfect character development trope you crave, yet puts a good spin on it.
Some of you haven’t even READ toa and say you hate it. Like what? How is that supposed to work.
PJO was way better than HOO. TOA sits in the middle of the two.
I love TOA because it shows Apollo’s character growth from one of the most arrogant, cocky, and prideful gods. And even then, he doesn’t go from that to a helpless mortal loving fool, he stays arrogant and prideful but less so. Not to mention more understanding of mortals and demigods live and what they go through. He doesn’t go from one extreme to the other, but one extreme to more of a center balance. It’s more natural that way.
While Jason’s death in TOA was sorta cheap, it goes to show demigods can die at the least expected times. If Jason had died during the war, then it would be “oh, well, that’s what war does. It kills people. Nothing new.” Compared to Jason going about life as normal and one small mission is his end. It’s more impactful and realistic that way. It goes to show that life as a demigod is always dangerous, fighting or not.
Jason’s anger to Percy for not noticing Nico’s feelings towards him is absolute bullshit. Fuck that as a whole. Nico acting cold and hateful towards Percy doesn’t and shouldn’t equal “I like you, notice me please”. The internalized homophobia should be Jason’s focus, not Percy’s lack of attention at Nico’s feelings.
Same for Leo about Calypso. Not to mention they both shove the blame onto Percy like its his fault when it really isn’t. Having your memory forcefully wiped mere months after a war isn’t gonna help when remembering stuff like that. Not to mention the Gods are bums who will try to do as little as possible and leave the rest to demigods. It leads to one sided anger and unnecessary confusion and guilt on the other side. Bad writing on Rick’s part tbh.
People need to stop acting like Jason didn’t die. That’s clinging into a ghost and not letting it move on. I hate to be the one who says it, but Jason is canonically dead and acting like he isn’t won’t change shit. It’s gonna lead to unhealthy habits in the future, trust me. You can’t write a fic post TOA then be like “oh yeah, Jason’s alive because I want him to :)))” because that isn’t how life works sweetheart.
People also need to stop pretending TOA doesn’t exist. You might not like it but you have to acknowledge that it is actually there and it follows the PJO/HOO timeline.
Paul was just a card to give Sally a nice man to lean on when it wasn’t necessary.
Percy should’ve been wayyyy more suspicious of Paul when he was first introduced. 6 years of abuse from a “father figure” isn’t just gonna go away because “oh he’s nice.” Guess what? Gabe was nice at first canoncially (even if it was for a very short amount of time).
Percy. Has. Serious. Anger. Issues. He’s sassy and stuff, sure, but he’s also got some severe anger problems that he both inherited from Poseidon and developed and festered over time from living with Gabe for 6 years.
Percy is the type to act like Hades or Apollo, attack a lesser being(s) because he can’t go after the big shot without fear of punishment. I wouldn’t be surprised if some his expulsions were from beating up various kids and/or teachers.
For the first half of TLT, Percy did not like Camp Half-Blood or consider it his “home” other than Grover and Luke. The camp treated him like shit because he was a noobie at first and then because he was a son of the Big Three. He hated Poseidon for his lack of care and lack of help when he and his mom were abused under Gabe. Had Luke talked to him during that time period and/or Kronos spoke to him in dreams, he would’ve joined the Titans. His loyalty for the camp didn’t form until near the end of TLT.
Nico and Percy basically had somewhat personality switches. Nico was an excitable, happy, laid back, and naive kid while Percy was a quiet, angry, and irritable kid. Nico’s switch came from Bianca’s death while Percy’s was more gradual. In the end, Nico became the quiet, irritable kid and Percy became the more happy, laid back kid.
Stop ignoring the fact that Nico, a literal 14-year-old, traversed into Tartarus. Alone. There’s always fics of Percy and Annabeth recovering or suffering from the after affects of the fall and war while Nico is relatively normal. The boy is not and has not been okay. His life has been one shitshow to the next ever since he was ten.
Both Percy and Nico have incredibly dark sides to their powers that they seemingly enjoyed that was fueled by anger. Percy with Achlys and Nico with Bryce. Percy admitted to liking torturing the goddess and Nico, though more subtly, seemed amused by Bryce and his attempts to justify his crimes and then frantic attempts to stay alive. Bryce literally says “I’m Bryce Lawrence! I am alive!” And Nico casually responds with “Who are you?” as he turns Bryce into a souless husk of a person. You cannot tell me that he wouldn’t have tilted his head innocently and cracked a small smile at that.
Piper’s portrayal as a Native American. Do I even need to go into that?
Percy. Liked. Luke. The boy knew the son of Hermes for what? 1 week? 2? Yet considered him to be a friend, possibly a close one at that. It probably went the same route Nico’s crush did. Hero adoration to actual romantic feelings but godspeed. Not because he just wanted to like a boy, but because, other than Chiron, Luke treated him with kindness, patience, and understanding as a male figure, something Percy didn’t really have growing up. Not to mention Luke helped Percy when no one else would. As a 12 year old, those type of feelings were bound to develop.
People who make the characters treat Percy and Leo as dumb, oblivious, or one dimensional sassy bois™️. Percy and Leo would be offended and/or defensive of such a thing because of childhood trauma. How many years do you think they can to endure that when they were younger from people they were supposed to trust or respect? You seriously can’t think they would be fine with it because their friends. Maybe a reference once or twice, but constantly? Absolutely not. Old habits die hard.
Solangelo seemed forced to me. I dunno, Nico’s whole confession felt like a ruse to get him set up with Will right away. I felt as though there wasn’t any real “connection” between the two prior to them getting together. It all felt rushed and out of place for the setting they were in. I’ve never understood it nor liked it and usually try to avoid it. That and Caleo seemed like a way to put all the characters in relationships so that they were “happy”, portraying that they needed to be with someone to achieve their happiness. Leo and Nico would’ve been better off single and learning to love themselves before loving someone else. Same applies to Sally.
Nico and Thalia would never get along because Thalia would be a reminder of what Nico lost (Bianca) and how easily how she could be replaced.
Demeter kids need more respect. I feel like that’s what Meg is for. To show that they can also technically be considered “Big Three” material because, if you forgot, Demeter is a child of Kronos as well. That means Demeter’s kids are cousins with the Big Three kids as well.
Aphrodite’s kids also need more respect. Aphrodite in the PJO universe is literally older than all gods, as she was born from Uranus’ gentials in the ocean and arose from there. Their powers could be exapanded wayyy more if they were focused on more.
Not to mention Poseidon kids could possibly gain attibutes of what would be considered Aphrodite’s powers since she was born from the ocean and vice versa. The possibilities are endless there.
That’s all I could think of for now! Lemme know what you guys think though.

30 Day Dragon Share Challenge
Day 25. Share Your Favourite Spirals (left-right)
-
➢ Choroma- He’s an interesting sort. Many think he’s an arcane dragon, due to his, also rather peculiar, pale pink eyes, but in reality he is an ice dragon; he’s something known as albino. He has all the other traits of albinism as well, including pale skin/scales sensitive to heat and sun, eyes sensitive to light, etc. He and his sister, Whyu never knew their true parents, and were raised by someone who found their eggs. They’re both fighters in the Empire, ones who focus more on their bodies as weapons as opposed to extra weapons such as swords. They will resort to weapons when needed, though that happens rarely. Choroma is the slightly older of the two, and tends to prefer defensive magic over offense magic, unlike his sister. He is calm, collected, and laid-back. He hardly ever loses his cool or his temper. Seems to have an excellent pain tolerance as well.
➢ Erebos- [no information for this dragon is available at this time]
➢ Chaytas- A tinkerer who cannot keep his hands still. He often works with Caleo, the Empire’s most experienced blacksmith and occasionally with Ashine, the goldsmith. He is friendly and talkative, and does enjoy spending time with others. He always has to keep his hands busy and he always has to keep moving in one way or another when awake, which is why he’s often tapping a foot or twitching his tail. He does have a temper though, and he’s very fierce when it’s awakened.

Caleo(war au)
It had been years-years, since she’d seen Leo. 2 long years. She’d learnt to cope. With the fact in mind..She’d had to go about her day. Getting used to the cold feeling when she’s awake with a cold and uneasy feeling.
Leo had promised he’d come home. And what was she supposed to do-believe he’d keep it? Sure...he’d always kept his promise..up until today. The nagging guilt in the back of her head for not believing him. But could you really blame her?
She’d spent her months feeling utterly alone-again.
She didn’t even have a daughter or friend to keep her company, while people like Hazel, Piper, Annabeth-even Nico, all of Leo’s old friends would attempt to keep her company, but none filled the silence in her painfully empty house.
The only voices that kept her from going completely mad were the voices of the authors in her books, and the voices of the angelic singers put on shuffle to fill the sound when she cried.
She just wanted Leo back-but she didn’t even know where he was.  She’d ache for him to call her sunshine just once more. It used to drive her nuts-now she craved it. Just once last glance at Leo Valdez. Just one more impish smirk. Just one more touch of the hand. Just to be graced once more by his lips.
The house was so long gone of his scent. Just the familiar scent of the flowers she garden. What she would give to smell his scent-the scent of fire, marsh mellows, and ink.
she hugged her sides, not wanting to get out of bed. what was the point anymore? When letters were all that were left anymore. of old events-a snapshot of history, of Leo’s life..what, but from around a week ago. without Leo by her side.
He could had been gone one year..to ten. It was all greatly uncertain. This was what made Calypso uneasy.
- She was sitting at the window sill, surrounded by a few plants, that looked as dead as she felt.
looking down at she book she held in her hands; missing you. A novel about a couple separated miles away from one another, but their relationship still lasted. Possibly this was Calypso’s last hope. to be held by Leo once more, to hear his laugh, eat his food. She wanted their high school years back. When it was simple and carefree.
Why did Leo have to go anyway! Calypso tried not to feel bitter. which was hard.
She found herself crying, the paper stained by another forgettable tear. She missed Leo so much-no matter how annoy and childish he could be. She felt her shoulder be touched. She world around in self defense as the person put their firm hands on her, a voice-one she hadn’t heard in what felt like an eternity said, “you don’t need to cry Cal, I’m here.” “L-Leo?” Calypso choked up, as if she didn’t believe it was real.
Leo looked different. but a good different. he’d grown taller, more fit, and even more attractive. Leo hugged her, and she hugged back just as fierce. for fear she’d loose him again. “I-I love you” she whispered into his chest, inhaling the scent she’d missed far too much.

Caleo Makes Me Cringe And Here’s Why
Yet another Heroes of Olympus anti list for your asses so prepare your butts because I’m about to blow ‘em clean off.
Note: Usually things apply. If you like Caleo and don’t care to hear counter opinions and that makes you aggressive and mean then this isn’t something you’re interested in, I’m going to have to ask you to move along :D I’m entitled to my opinions as you are yours. Any aggression targeted at me because I don’t ship what you ship will be treated with demeaning responses
You have been warned
Side Note: I have nothing but love for Rick Riordan, these are solely my opinions, which I’m entitled to have.
If you have anything to include, feel free to add your own thoughts.
I’m putting this under a Read More so people who don’t want to see this doesn’t have to.
1. To the people who say that Caleo is the best ship because “it’s not incest”. You are wrong. Calypso is Atlas’ daughter, Leo is Hephaestus’ son.  In Riordan verse, Atlas is Iapetus’ son, Iapetus is Kronos/Cronus’ brother, Kronos/Cronus is Zeus and Hera’s father, Hera is Hephaestus’ mother (and in some myths Zeus is his “biological” dad but we’ll ignore this for the riordan verse). If you’re using the incest card, it’s still incest as all gods and titans are related in some way as they all came from Gaea in some way, shape, or form. So kissing cousins apply here and that makes your argument invalid. Claiming it’s the only “healthy” or not gross ship is a lie or you could go along with Rick and his “genetics are a human thing”. The choice is yours.
2. They started out hating each other but skipped the whole tolerating/friendship stage and basically went straight into romance which doesn’t work for the short amount of time they were together. It was a weak build up and even now Leo looks like a lovestruck little boy while Calypso seems to be rather aloof and disengaged from the relationship. Kind of like now that people are around to see them she doesn’t want to be seen romantically with him? At least, that’s how it looks to me. This is my perception.
3. Calypso seems very angry still and I feel like it would be better for her to work on that solo rather than be in a relationship where she needs to kind of take it a lot slower than she would if she was alone. She has to take another person’s feelings into account so that’s not the best for someone with so much pent up anger. Take it from someone who has had something like that.
4. What would have been a more powerful story line for both of them would have been Leo realizing he doesn’t need to be in a relationship to feel validated and cared for. That being the 7th wheel isn’t a bad thing unless you perceive it that way. It’s a flaw with most books like this and young adult books. All the main characters simply have to be in a relationship. It seems like it’s a must and it’s not. A fair amount of people go through high school without dating. I had two boyfriends, one that lasted for a month (and he gave me fucking panic attacks) and then one that lasted about six months (before a tragedy), but I had friends who had been dating their S.O. since freshman year, some who chewed through boyfriends like no tomorrow, some who didn’t want to date, and some who just never dated. For what seems to be every young adult book ever, there are couples even if feelings don’t bloom until the very end of the book. So imagine my disappointment at how unrealistic these are becoming? It seems literally everyone in PJO/HoO/ToA are in a relationship even background and minor characters. I feel like it’s because people suspect this out of Rick now, and it makes me feel bad that he feels he needs to pair everyone up. I can’t imagine how stressful that must be. He shouldn’t have to do that. There’s this wonderful thing called fan fiction; you can read it, write it, and explore it. You don’t need to make that poor man feels like everyone needs to be in a relationship. It has negative affects/effects on people that age who reads them because then they feel like they need to be in a relationship to feel validated (like Leo) and could possibly end up in a bad relationship or feel like there’s something wrong with them for not being in one.
5. For Calypso because #4 was so long. Calypso’s story would have been a lot more powerful had she learned to love herself and the boat come for her. It would have been a real strong hit like “You don’t need someone to save you” and “You can save yourself” and self love promotion. (Honestly, both of their storylines could have done that but those opportunities were missed unless it gets horrendously retconned). In this day and age, I definitely feel like promoting self love is more powerful than Caleo unless you’re looking at it through rose colored glasses, like most shippers do. I’m guilty of this myself. I love Leo and I love Calypso, I just feel like there was a missed opportunity here.
6. Leo saving Calypso kind of made Percy look bad. This is a no-no. Making one character look bad for a relationship is a no-no. Percy usually keeps his promises. The only one I’ve seen him not keep was Bianca and even then I’m not 100% that was a promise? I don’t know. I just don’t like that Percy just “forgot” and basically made him like the other heroes that landed on Calypso’s island. I’m confident that’s not something that Percy would just “forget” but whatever. There’s a lot with HoO that I don’t like when it comes to Percy but that’s a post for another time.
7. Okay this is just because I seen a post from a pro caleo blog (and I’m not going to tag cause I don’t want to start a fight since this is a personal opinion and they made it clear they’re going to “defend caleo till they die”. I’m not trying to talk anyone out of anything. I’m stating my opinions, but claiming things about other ships without acknowledging your own ships faults is a no-no. (that’s the reasoning for the first reason on here). Here’s my defense (despite the fact I don’t really ship any of the canon ships but unfair attacks are unfair attacks) alright so here we go.      a. “ Percabeth = Incest.” See #1 because Caleo is also incest and I explained it above making this a useless excuse to ship Caleo.      b. “Tysella = Furry.” Okay, but Ella is a harpy and Tyson is a cyclopes. I don’t understand why furry is being claimed here but okay. You’re entitled to your opinion, but harpies were never considered animals as they are mythical creatures and I, personally, don’t include mythical creatures as furries but aiight. Furries have fur, not feathers. I haven’t seen any furries/fursonas with feathers. If I’m wrong all I ask is that you prove it without being vulgar.       c. “Grover/Juniper = Furry” Okay. Grover is a satyr which doesn’t really strike me as Furry since it’s humanoid, same with Ella, so it’s not furry as furry are completely animals? And anyways Juniper is basically a fucking nature spirit? It’s basically similar to how a dog likes rolling around in the grass? Whatever though       d. “Jason and Piper = Incest” again so is Caleo. skip Frank and Hazel because nothing was really said on this.       e. “Paul and Sally = Sally’s probably traumatized by Gabe beating the shit out of her” Okay, what does that have to do with Paul and Sally? That’s completely irrelevant to Paul and Sally’s relationship especially since there’s no hint at Paul being abusive to Sally? Sure, Sally is probably traumatized, but I would think she’s working through that since she seems to have a functioning relationship. But what does Sally’s trauma have to do with Paul? Weak excuse.       f. “Solangelo = Not only is Nico 85 while Will 14 but he’s possessive etc, etc”. Okay, but Nico is technically 14 himself? I mean, yes, he was born way back, but if we’re looking at age here Calypso is thousands of years older than Leo. And with possessive, I’m pretty sure Leo got mad at Percy about Calypso and was even kind of mad/jealous of Jason while he was trapped on the island because of Calypso not being interested in him and basically calling him scrawny or something like that. And Nico is in the body of a fourteen year old, he has the mind of a fourteen year old. He is a fourteen year old. He is in the mental state of a fourteen year old. Do you know how unsettling that would be if he dated someone “his own age”? His growth, mentally and physically, have been stunted thanks to the Lotus Hotel, so Nico di Angelo is a fucking fourteen year old. Let’s be clear that I don’t ship Solangelo, but after the shit that kid has been through he deserves to be happy. He lost all of his family, was forcibly outed by his sexuality by an asshole god, went through Tartarus by himself, and had to deal with feeling lost in a world that he didn’t feel accept him even among his peers/the people who should have understood him the most. If anyone deserves to be happy. It’s him. Fucking drop it.       g. “Chris/Clarisse” we’re back at incest and I’m back at Caleo being incest.       h. “Charles and Selena” again with incest because their parents are married. Atlas is Hephaestus’ great uncle so that’s seriously your kid dating your cousin. But Caleo isn’t creepy or incest. Okay thanks. Beckendorf and Silena are a ship that I actually enjoyed because they gave a shit about each other and loved each other despite parentage and then they died and it broke my heart. Honestly, if you find this creepy, a mother and daughter dated a police officer and his son in the Scream TV Series. That I found weird especially since that was all biological. Rick already said that genetics and gods aren’t a thing. The fact that I’m saying this more that once is exhausting. Just because your parents are married doesn’t mean it’s incest. To make this less creepy, Hephaestus and Aphrodite never had children and it’s a bullshit marriage anyways so. Whatever.
Honestly, if you’re going to be biased, at least know your facts.
That’s all I got now, feel free to start a discussion.

my friend @feelsofmyfandoms of fandom made an exellent point destorying the ‘rushed’ argument once and for all
and when percy was at ogygia for TWO WEEKS he said it felt like it was a couple years, and leo was there for three weeks so it was bound to feel like more than a couple years so calypso and leo felt like they were together for a couple years, which is more than enough time to develop feelings for each other
this is an exellent point. Time runs so much different on that island then it does in real life. It is clearly stated time has no concept on the island. So no Caleo is not rushed, we just don’t see the bonding and we didn’t see Solangelo bond either so stop being bullshit hypocrites

Okay, listen everyone!” Leo sat opposite Nico in the circle holding up a phone. “We’re going to play with this app. It’s really cool. It’s some sort of mixture of Truth Or Dare and Never Have I Ever. I have to type in the names of the players.”
Fidgeting nervously, Nico thought that joining this had probably been a bad idea.–
This is a HOO/PJO oneshot. Sort of Modern!au because they’re using a phone at camp.
3496 words
Solangelo is not canon yet.( ͡° ͜ ͜ʖ ͡°) Also Leo is single because I don’t ship Caleo at all and I just couldn’t bring myself to write them, sorry eeh.
Nico put on his dark jacket grudgingly. He was so not ready for this evening. Well, on one hand he was glad, of course, to spend some time with his friends. Gods, he was actually really happy to be able to call them his friends. They all had been through so much, but they made it. They had worked hard. Every single one of them still dealt with their personal demons of course. This was about healing internally. Scars on the soul, in the heart. But we’re on a good way, Nico thought.
Images of a boy smiling cheekily, blond curls gleaming in the sunlight, skilled hands gently wrapping bandages around Nico’s injuries flooded his mind. The son of Hades tilted his head back and squeezed his eyes shut, trying to push away the pictures that filled his body with a burning kind of warmth.
Suddenly light steps could be heard outside of the cabin. Then a few knocks on his door. “Nico, are you still alive in there? By the time you’re at Jasons everyone will be wasted.” Hazel. His sister.
Nico exhaled soundly and shook his head. He opened the door to see Hazel smiling up at him, eyebrows raised in a questioning way.  “You okay?”
“Sure.”
“Alright then, let’s go.” She pulled his hand out of his pocket and started walking towards the Zeus cabin. Nico looked her over, noticing the bounce in her step and her somewhat messier hair than usual. “You didn’t drink anything, did you?”
“What?” She gave him an amused look. “Don’t play the big bad brother on me. Of course I didn’t drink anything.” Nico wasn’t convinced. He decided to make it his soul mission for the evening to have a good eye on his sister. Besides, maybe that would keep his mind off other things. Or people. Maybe.
 ▬▬
Entering Cabin one, Nico was still not ready for this. The Cabin was a chaotic mess with way more people than usually in it. Loud music was coming from who knew where. Hazel hopped over to where Frank was sitting cross legged in a circle with Jason, Percy, Grover, and Connor, deep in conversation with the son of Poseidon. Percy had his legs propped up on Jasons lap and was gesticulating with his hands wildly. They all had cups or bottles standing in front of them. Jason, sitting between the two dark haired boys, was listening to them intently. Hazel set down next to her boyfriend cuddling his muscular arm and kissing the son of Mars on the cheek.
“I got him.” she said and pointed her thumb over her shoulder at Nico, who still stood awkwardly in the doorway. Frank and Percy broke their conversation to greet him enthusiastically. Percy pulled his legs off Jason to stand up and give Nico a sort of half hug. “About time, ghost king. You wouldn’t have wanna missed this party.”
Grinning, the taller boy walked through behind him towards Annabeth and Piper, who were standing at an improvised kind of bar with multiple glasses, cups and bottles. Piper seemed to make some kind of experiment. She had some glasses in front of her filled with a weird beige colored liquid. The surface was strewn with an open bottle of pineapple juice, a toppled over coconut milk can, some pieces of crashed ice and straws in pink and orange.
Percy put one of Annabeths golden curls behind her ear and brought his mouth very close to it to tell her something. When he pulled away after playfully kissing her neck, Annabeths gaze fell on Nico. She waved smiling and Nico waved back. Seeing those two together still gave Nico a slightly bitter taste in his mouth. But he was so very happy for them.
Annabeth gestured for Travis and Leo, who were standing on the other side of the cabin to turn down the music. Nico flinched as he noticed who else was accompanying the sons of Hermes and Hephaistos. Will was crouched down beside some kind of device turning different buttons. He wore a white shirt that looked nice on his tanned skin. His Camp Half-Blood necklace was wrapped around his wrist a few times and there was another bracelet. From his past visits in the infirmary, Nico knew that it was a leather bracelet with a tiny silver stethoscope.
Will seemed to sense someone staring at him. He turned to look at Nico quiet sudden. For a second they just stared at each other. Then, Will stood up and grinned at Nico, waving somewhat shyly. Nico tried to smile back, feeling like a complete idiot.
When the music was less loud the others all set down in the circle, putting their bottles and drinks in front of them. “Di Angelo, finally! Let’s get started guys. This is going to be fun. Nico you need something to drink.”, Leo said quickly, rummaging around behind the bar. Wait, how did he get there? Must have crossed the room while I was busy staring at Will, Nico thought.
“Leo wants to play a drinking game with us,” Hazel explained. “He found an app. Apparently it’s really funny.”
“What? Hazel I told y-“
“Before you start, no I won’t join. At least not with alcohol”
“Aw, Nico is worried about his sister”, Percy teased.
“Well yeah”, Nico said crossing his arms. “I don’t want her to get hurt.” Nico thought he saw a worried expression flicker across Percys face. Bianca. The temperature seemed to have dropped dramatically. “Look, I’m sorry…”
“No, I’m sorry.” Percy said, now back to his easy posture. “I get it. It’s sweet of you to think of Hazel like that.”
“Huh, yeah.” Nico exhaled relieved. This evening was supposed to be about having fun and enjoying each other’s company.
“Don’t worry, man. I’ll take care of her.”, Frank chimed in and put an arm around her shoulders protectively.
Hazel rolled her eyes and pushed him off. “Like any of you’d want to get me sloshed.”
“Hm, I wouldn’t be so sure to trust everyone here.” Nico said looking at Leo.
The Latino boy held his hands up defensively. “Hey, compadre. I’m not doing anything. So what do you wanna drink? Some shots?” He grinned and his eyes glinted suspiciously.
“Uh, no thanks. I’ll start out with a beer.” Nico said.
“Oh, c’mon. You can’t play a drinking game with beer. You should get really drunk you know. That’s the fun.” Leo said disappointed.
“I can do whatever I want, Valdez.” Nico snapped. He couldn’t really hold his liquor very well anyway. Who had time to get drunk when there are constant quests and monsters to take care of? He picked up a beer from the bar and sat down next to Travis and… oh Hades, Will. The blond stopped talking to Connor on his right to grin at Nico.
“Hey, how are you?”
“Is that how you’re going to great me for the rest of my life? “How are you?” I’m good, thanks. It’s not like I’m going to pass out any minute.” Nico answered more confidently than he felt.
Will laughed. The sound sent a chill down Nico’s spine.  “Alright, alright. I’m just being polite… Also, be careful.” He added.
Nico rolled his eyes and took a sip of his beer.
“Okay, listen everyone!” Leo sat opposite Nico in the circle holding up a phone. “We’re going to play with this app. It’s really cool. It’s some sort of mixture of Truth Or Dare and Never Have I Ever. I have to type in the names of the players.”
Fidgeting nervously, Nico thought that joining this had probably been a bad idea.
▬▬
Nico had discovered that the game was equally fun and dangerous. Some people had to drink way more than others. Right now, especially Percy and Piper were more than tipsy. Piper was standing at the bar mixing a weird alcohol-free cocktail for Hazel and Percy laughed at everyone and everything. Annabeth sat next to him and shook her head with an affectionate smile on her lips.
“Those who will sleep in a single bed tonight give out 5 sips”, Leo announced. “Yes!” He punched the air triumphal. “Finally that single life pays off. Jason take 5 sips.”
“Seriously? All five?” Jason shook his head but laughed and put the cup to his lips.
“I say Annabeth has to take my five sips”, Nico said grinning.
“No! This evening will end badly.” She took the sips squeezing her eyes shut. Percy kissed her enthusiastically but missed her mouth and ended up smooching the side of her face. She laughed loudly and tried to push him off without much success.
“Hey Will, you’re single! Who takes the sips?” Leo asked.
“Yeah it’s a shame.” he answered with a side glance at Nico, who felt really hot all of a sudden. “Hmm, I guess Leo.”
When Frank and Hazel, who were technically a couple but still slept in separate beds had given out their sips, Leo swiped left and red out the next one.
“Game. Would you rather be able to fly or read minds? Everyone vote at the same time, losing group drinks 4 times.”
“I already can fly.” Jason said smugly.
“Show off.” Travis shouted. “I think flying really is better though.”
“Yes,” his brother agreed. “Imagine all the pranks you could pull on people. Like you could fly above them and drop stuff on them.”
“Dude, I don’t know. Flying isn’t my thing. I say reading minds.” Percy said.
“You really wanna know what everyone thinks about you?” Will asked.
“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean?” Percy tilted his chin up, raising his eyebrows and looking at Will.
Nico laughed and the others joined in.
“No, but mind reading could be beneficial for fighting monsters. Like, you’d know if they’re lying or what they’re planning.” The satyr chimed in.
“Thank you, Grover.” Percy raised his cup towards his best friend.
In the end, the losing group that had to drink where Percy, Grover and Piper because the rest had chosen flying.
“Virus: Annabeth you’re the eye of the snake! Everytime you meet someone’s gaze, he or she drink 3 times.”
Annabeth laughed. “Hey at least half of you just looked at me. C’mon drink.”
“Oh, no. I won’t be able to look at you at all.” Percy said frowning. “What kind of game is this?”
“Don’t worry. At one point the app will say that she’s not the eye of the snake anymore. It won’t last throughout the whole game.” Leo explained.
“Oh, ok. Fine” Percy said and promptly looked his girlfriend in the eye. “Oh for gods sake!” he exclaimed and took three sips. “This is impossible.”
“Next one. Nico, if you’ve ever had a McDonalds order that was more than 20 dollars, give out 5 sips. Otherwise drink them.”
“I definitely did.” Nico said laughing.
“Wait, really?” Will asked.
“Uhm, yeah I need them for… well…”
“For raising the dead.” Percy finished the sentence for him. “He uses Happy Meals to raise the dead.”
Will stared at him. “What.”
Nico couldn’t help but laugh again at Wills expression. “Well, I talk to them and as a reward I do give them Happy Meals. That’s true. Also I say, Will, you drink.”
Will shook his head in disbelieve and took the five sips.
“Game: Video game consoles, the first to run out of ideas drink 3 times. Grover, you start. Oh, that’s stupid. None of us know much about video games. Let’s change that to… uh…”
“Deadly weapons?” Grover suggested casually. They agreed. “Okay, I’ll say my pipe. It can be very deadly.”
“What, how?” Connor asked.
“I can control the nature around me with a song. Has been very helpful in fights.”
“Katie sure would like that.” Travis said sounding melancholic. “She’s got a green thumb, remember?”
They listed some other weapons until Will didn’t know anything new and had to drink.
“Haha, this one’s good. The hairiest person has to drink 5 times.”
“That’s Hazel. Because of the frizzy wild hair.” Percy called.
“What about, Frank? When he changes into a furry animal?” Jason considered.
“He isn’t an animal right now, Jason. I agree with Percy on this.” Annabeth said.
“Thanks, Wise Girl.” He moved to kiss her but she dodged him. “Hey, you just looked me in the eye.”
“What? Oh, that’s still going? Dammit.”
Piper finally returned from the bar and put a colorful cocktail in front of Hazel. “Here, take your five sips. I made this with my heart and soul, Hazel.” She stumbled through the circle, tripped over an empty cup and let herself fall onto Jasons lap.
“Game. Connor, mime a scene from a movie. The first person to guess the correct movie can give out 3 sips.”
Connor stood up a little shakily. He thought about it for a minute before putting on a really serious face. He reached into his shirt like he would pull out something. Then, he put his hands to his face as if to put on glasses. He took another imaginary object out of his shirt and held it out in front of the group. He moved his thumb as if to push a button.
“Huh?”
“What?”
“That could not be more unclear.”
Connor repeated this at least eight times, before Travis shouted: “Men in Black!”
“Yes, for Zeus’ sake! It wasn’t that hard, c’mon.” Connor returned to his place in the circle.
Travis explained that Connor had put on the protective sunglasses like Agent J and K in the movie and the device to delete the witnesses’ memories. To Nico, the movie sounded really weird.
When Travis had given the three sips to Connor, Leo read out the next one.
“Drink 3 times if you’ve ever spent more than 1200 dollars in a day. Nope.”
“Well, my dad probably did.” Piper said. “But me? No.”
“Right, your father is famous.” Percy said.
“Yup. I’d like not to talk about that.” She pulled a face and gestured for Leo to continue.
“Drink 4 times if you made love within the past 48h.”
“Ah, made love. What a cute way to say it.” Piper said.
Percy gave a short laugh and he and Annabeth drank.
“Damn!” Travis and Connor said at the same time, laughed and high fived.
“Seriously, we’re the only ones?” the son of Poseidon asked.
“Not all of us have a wild sex life like you two.” Leo said grinning.
Annabeth who was a little red faced threw a green drinking straw at him.
He laughed and red out the next one. “People wearing glasses drink 2 times.”
Jason swore and drank.
“If you’ve ever secretly read texts on your significant other’s phone, drink 2 times!”
“Who in their right mind does that?” Frank asked.
The others agreed.
“Annabeth you’re not the eye of the snake anymore.”
“Oh thank the gods!” Percy exclaimed and kissed his girlfriend lovingly.
“The host of this place, give out 4 sips. If there isn’t a host, Leo give out sips!”
“Yes! Nico, take four sips.” Jason said grinning.
“Game: Decide who is the most intelligent person in the room, who must now drink 2 times.”
“Annabeth!” shouted Percy, Piper and Hazel all at once. The others nodded.
“Thanks guys.” She said smiling and drank two times.
“Hey smartie pants, give out 3 sips.”
“Does it really say that?”
“Yeah”, Leo confirmed laughing.
“Okay, Will. Three sips.”
“Game: Would you rather have a rewind button in your life or a pause button? Everyone vote at the same time, losing group drinks 4 times.”
“Pause button, hundred percent.” Percy said bitterly.
Annabeth, Will, Nico, Hazel, Frank and Grover agreed.
“But with a rewind button you could relive all funny moments again and again.” Leo considered.
Leo, Travis, Connor and Piper were the losing group that had chosen the rewind button.
“Would you rather stub your little toe every day or have a shower only twice a week? Vote at the same time, losers drink 5 times.”
“Virus: Be polite to Will, who will now be serving everyone’s drinks.”
“Percy, if you have long and beautiful hair you can give out 2 sips. Otherwise drink them.”
“Virus: Piper, from now on you must repeat each word twice saying something. You drink each each time time you you forget forget.”
“Nico and Grover, read out loud the first message displayed when you type “miss” in the search bar on your phone. Whoever passes drinks 3 times.”
“Percy, write a silly post on Facebook with the words/verbs “damage”, “herpes”, “Queen of England” and “Grover”… or down your drink.”
“Will has done enough, he/she can stop serving drinks.”
“Piper, you can speak normally again.”
“Virus: Frank The Mad Hatter. Everytime you clap your hands, everybody drinks.”
“Game: Would you rather be Gandalf or Dumbledore? Everyone vote at the same time, losing group drinks 2 times.”
“Percy, send “I love you” via text message to a person chosen by Connor, or drink 5 times.”
“Frank is no longer the Mad Hatter.”
“Travis, imitate a turtle for 5 seconds or drink 2 times.”
“Leo, if you stay quiet for 5 minutes, you can choose someone to finish his/her drink!”
“Game: Go around the room and say “thank you” in a language other than English. The first to run out of languages drink 2 times. Percy, you start.”
At this point of their party, everyone was at least tipsy, most of them outright drunk. Only Hazel had kept her promise and hadn’t drunk anything strong.
“Uuuh, sorry. I don’t know many languages.” Percy said with a sad look on his face. His head was laying in Jasons lap and at some point he had taken off his shirt. He moved to take his cup when Annabeth interrupted.
“Percy, you’re a Greek demigod, remember?” she said. The daughter of Athena’s hair was a mess and the floor in front of her was littered with straws and empty cups.
“Oh, right. Uhm, ευχαριστώ? “
„Well done, Seaweed Brain! “ Annabeth clapped her hands appreciatively. “Dankeschön, that’s German.” she added.
“teşekkür ederim“ Connor said. „I have no idea why I know that.” Nico noticed that he was wearing Percys shirt now. His own had been used to clean the place where he had spilled his drink earlier.
Now it was Wills turn. His cheeks were a cute rose color and his eyes glistened a vibrant shade of blue. Nico couldn’t tear his gaze away. “¡gracias!“ Will said loudly.
“Oh no! I was about to say that!” Leo shouted and threw his hands up.
Will gave him the finger and turned to Nico. “Your turn, Di Angelo.”
“Easy, that’s grazie. “ Nico said proudly.
As the rest of the group continued Will moved closer to Nico. “Hey, wanna get some fresh air?”
Nico looked up at him surprised. “Sure.”
They stood up carefully. Nico swayed a little so Will took his hand to keep him from falling down. The other boy muttered a small “thank you”, feeling his face heating up. He followed the blonde out of the Zeus cabin into the fresh night air. The abrupt change of the atmosphere, as the door closed behind them hit Nico like a slap in the face. But in a good way, he thought. The cool air and the soft sound of waves lapping against the shore further northwards relaxed him. Nico closed his eyes and exhaled slowly. Suddenly he felt an itch in his neck and whipped his head around. Will was standing beside him observing his face. He caught Nico’s gaze and smiled. “The air is nice, huh.”
Nico tore his eyes away from the blue ones and looked into the distance. “Yeah, I didn’t notice how loud it was in there.” He said with a nod towards the white cabin behind him.
“True.” Will crossed his arms and turned to face into the same direction as Nico. “It’s complete chaos.”
“Yes, but it’s nice. Really nice. Spending time together like this. It’s so…” Nico couldn’t find the right words. Suddenly, his mouth felt very dry.
He knew Will was looking at him when the son of Apollo said: “I know what you mean. For us demigods it’s… precious. It’s not to be taken for granted.” Then, as if he had read Nico’s mind he added: “Wait a second, I’ll get us some water. Don’t shadow travel away!”
“I won’t” Nico replied chuckling. “I won’t” he whispered the words into the dark night air when Will had closed the door behind him. Far away in the woods a creature howled. Southwards you could hear the chink sounds of some Hephaistos kid working the forge. A warm breeze tickled Nicos face and brought the scent of the strawberry fields with it.
In this near to perfect moment Nico felt at home. The door behind him opened, Nico Di Angelo turned around and smiled up at Will Solace.
I hope whoever read this liked it. I guess my English isn’t too bad but I’m sorry if there’s a wrong expression every now and then. I’m very open to writing advice/ constructive cirizism.
By the way, I was referring to a real app here. It’s called “PicoloApp” and is so amazing. If you don’t know it yet, you should try it!

Things We Lost in the Fire, ch 27
aka Caleo uni au
Fic summary: Calypso starts studying at a new university, but to her annoyance her new flatmate is a loud mouthed mechanic who also likes to sneak his dog in whenever. But as she learns to know him better, she realizes they might have more in common than what she first thought. Eventually, even the darkest secrets come out…
Chapter summary: The exam season is underway (yet somehow I don’t mention the exams all too many times...)
A/N: Yay, I'm back with this fic!! I think I can promise a bit more regular updates at least in the near future, but I will be starting to work longer hours possibly starting from next week so I will have a bit less free time then. I am still determined to keep up with my 500ish words per day goal so it should cause too much delay!
That's that, I hope you guys are as happy to return to this universe as I am! As usual, please let me know what you think :) This fic is about to take my longest fic position from Love Can Melt the Ice, so knowing that there are people who care about it really means a lot to me!
Words: 2393
Genre: romance & hurt/comfort
Warnings: none
previous chapter / AO3
Leo would have been lying if he had claimed that everything went back to completely normal after the talk with Calypso. Sure, they both really tried harder to act as neutral and friendly as possible around each other; whenever they were at home at the same time, they chatted casually about how things were going at work and at the university, their latest TV show or music discoveries, or some silly thing one of their friends had said or done recently. Sometimes they even watched something together or cleaned the common area together. However, the earlier confessions were never mentioned. On the surface things were ‘just fine’, but the unspoken words and lingering looks spoke for itself. Leo knew things were still heating up under the surface and sooner or later they would have to make some difficult decisions. But until then, he wasn’t going to risk anything by disrespecting the guidelines that they had set during their ‘big talk’, even if it was hard to resist sometimes.
One evening Leo found Calypso studying for her upcoming exams on the common area couch. She was wearing a pink, tunic length sweater that matched her lip color, and black leggings that hugged her legs tightly (not that he’d ever tell her that he had noticed such things). She had also pulled her now medium length hair into a messy ponytail so it wouldn’t bother her while she was reading, showing her nicely shaped facial features better. Despite noticing all that, Leo’s thoughts soon went to the facts that he had recently learned about his flatmate. Now he knew more about the hardships she had gone through; a dead sister, an abusive, controlling father, being alone all those years and the nightmares she had mentioned while drunk. Yet, somehow there she was, having escaped her father’s grip and looking perfectly content doing something as boring and normal as studying for exams. The girl was way stronger than he had earlier given her credit for, and Leo admired her capability to stay so calm; he wasn’t so sure the ghosts of his own past would leave him alone that easily.
“Hi,” he finally said before Calypso noticed that he’d been standing there just watching her far too long despite the rules they had set. “What are you reading?”
Calypso showed him the book. If she was surprised to see him, she hid it well. “A collage of Frenchmen’s experiences at the front lines during World War II. I know. A very cheerful way to finish the day.” She grimaced.
“Huh? I thought you were mostly focusing on older history? I didn’t know you study that stuff too,” Leo noted, shifting from one foot to another.
“Well, they do require us to have a good enough understanding of the newer events as well,” Calypso replied, now looking at him directly. For some reason that one look managed to make chills go down Leo’s spine. “It is true, though, that I am more interested in ancient history. There’s so much we still don’t know about those times and I want to be able to discover more.”
“I see,” Leo said. “I think I understand what you mean. I am constantly hoping to discover new ways to create things that will be useful for all of us. Flying dragons that use energy drinks as their energy source? How epic would that be?” Excitement surged through him when he simply thought about it.
“Isn’t that a bit out there?” Calypso asked, but Leo didn’t miss the amused glint in her eyes. “And what if everyone had flying dragons and that would cause horrible air accidents? I don’t know about you but to me they don’t sound very safe.”
“Sunshine, what’s life without some danger?” Leo questioned.
“Hmm, let me think: safe?” Calypso retorted.
“Ouch. Well, I don’t think I have time to invent flying dragons any time soon, so you don’t have to worry about that,” Leo reassured her, but now that the idea had been planted into his head, he decided to return to it some day in the future. Hopefully when he would be able to handle fire.
“That’s a relief,” Calypso replied. “Speaking of your inventions… have you decided what you’re going to do about your studies? The last time I asked you said you haven’t been in contact with your professor yet.”
That was a question Leo had been dreading for. He preferred to not talk about that topic unless he had to, but the truth was that he was still quite unsure about being able to continue. However, he hadn’t made any final decisions yet.
“I’ll… I’ll keep working to overcome my fear,” he responded vaguely. “I think I’ve made some small progress during our sessions. If I can keep that going, I may be able to retake the test next year. Small steps, you know.” In reality, so far he had managed to stay close to a small, burning candle for a short period of time without freaking out, but he still didn’t want to try the matches whenever Calypso suggested it. There was still a long way to go before he’d be able to use all the machines he needed during lab classes and at work.
“Okay,” Calypso said, but to Leo she sounded a bit unconvinced. Her voice got more reassuring, though, when she added: “You know that you can ask for my help any time you need it.”
“Yeah, thanks.” Leo nodded. “And same right back at you. I mean, you can ask me. If you need anything.” For some annoying reason he managed to only get stuttering out of his mouth at that moment. “Even if you simply want me to make you a miniature dragon in the middle of the night. It’s fine. I’d totally make it.”
“And why would I want you to make me a miniature dragon in the middle of the night?” Calypso looked at him questioningly. Before Leo managed to answer, her face softened into a smile and she added: “I really appreciate the thought, though. It feels so different… in a good way… to have people in my life who genuinely support me. I haven’t had that, well, since I got separated from my mom.”
She sat a bit straighter on the couch, her gaze going back and front between Leo and her book, and Leo wondered if she was debating if she should reach for him and touch his shoulder or something. Maybe even hug. One side of him wished she would just go for it. But that would have violated their newly made rules and neither wanted to make things even more complicated than they already were. They simply kept staring at each other for a while, as if trying to read each other’s thoughts, but finally Calypso sighed and turned her focus back on her book, closing it.
“I didn’t realize it’s already this late…” She said, adjusting her hair a bit with the hand that wasn’t holding the book. “I still need to finish an assignment for tomorrow.”
She stood up and started walking towards her room, but when she got past Leo, her arm briefly touched his. Leo’s arm was still tingling after Calypso closed the door behind her.
A few days later, Leo was still thinking of that incident when he almost fell over a big rock that was standing on his road. He and Jason were currently having a well deserved evening off after finishing their last exams of the semester earlier that day (Leo felt like he had at least succeeded with the calculations but his essay writing was a bit sloppy) and in honor of that they had decided to go for a long jog and after that have a big, unhealthy meal in one of their favorite pizza places. While they were on their way there, Jason had been explaining something about his holiday plans when Leo had zoned out, and Jason had to grab his arm so he didn’t fall.
“Hey, man, you OK?” Jason asked, frowning. “What just happened there?”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m OK.” Leo brushed some dust off the sleeves of his coat. “I was just… thinking. And didn’t notice the rock on the road.”
“Hmmm, what got you that thoughtful?” Jason inquired. “I bet you didn’t even hear what I just said.”
“You know I have a pretty nasty case of ADHD, sometimes I just zone out randomly,” Leo said defensively, not wanting to admit aloud that recently he had been even more distracted than usual because of a certain flatmate of his. “And no, I didn’t hear you.”
“Alright,” Jason shrugged. “I was telling you that Piper’s dad has invited us to visit him over the break. I’m not sure yet if we are going, though. Piper didn’t seem very enthusiastic about it. Sure, she wants to see him, but she suspects he’s still working most of the time so it would be the same to just call instead of traveling all the way to LA.”
“Mmmh,” Leo mumbled, trying hard to stay in the present moment. “I’m going to be at Waystation during the break so if you guys decide to stay, we can still hang out.”
“Okay, I’ll let you know what we decide to do. That wasn’t all, though…” Jason continued, his face becoming concerned. “I think Piper has seemed quite distant lately, and not just when we’ve been talking about that trip. Sometimes I worry that she’s gotten bored of me, or something.”
“No way, man!” Leo exclaimed. “I’ve seen you guys together often enough to know that she loves you. Maybe she’s just going through a rough phase or something.”
Jason didn’t seem quite convinced. “I guess so. It’s just that usually she tells me directly what’s bothering her. This… keeping things inside her isn’t like her.”
“Maybe you just need to give her some time,” Leo suggested. “It’s like me with Cal; I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut more often and in exchange she has slowly started opening up to me more recently.”
“She has? That’s great!” Jason cheered up. “How is it going with you two anyway? I heard some things about the Halloween party aftermath…”
“Nothing happened after the party!” Leo yelped, raising his hands. “Whatever Piper has told you, all lies.”
“Really? So you two wouldn’t have kissed if Piper hadn’t interrupted you guys?” Jason raised his eyebrow.
If Leo’s cheeks hadn’t already been red from the jogging, he certainly would have blushed. “Um… well… the point is that we didn’t. Besides, we’ve set some rules that we’re supposed to follow because we don’t wanna make our co living too complicated.”
“So there is something going on between you two and you are acknowledging it,” Jason teased. “You wouldn’t need to set any rules otherwise.”
“Yeah, yeah,” Leo muttered. “If you must know, we did admit that we like each other after the party.”
“But that’s great!” Jason exclaimed.
“It feels pretty crazy,” Leo replied. “Sometimes I wonder why she likes me, but maybe the Bad Boy Supreme’s magic is stronger than I thought.”
Jason snorted at his comment. “I don’t know Calypso as well as you do but I doubt it’s the so-called Bad Boy Supreme side that she cares about. You pretend to be all cool and try to seem like you don’t care about what’s happening around you but I think you do that only because you care too much. Maybe Calypso has noticed that as well.”
“Dude, you’ve been hanging out with Piper too much.” Leo shook his head. “That’s something she would say. ” “Well, she’s not wrong. Anyway, what happened after the big confession?”Jason asked curiously.
“We’re not together if that’s what you’re asking, ” Leo denied immediately. “I just mentioned the rules, remember? We wouldn’t need them if we had decided to go down that road.” “Ouch… but why? Why didn’t you just decide to do it?” Jason wanted to know.
“For some stupid, noble reasons,” Leo grunted. “I’m not gonna go into the details because it’s up to her to talk about it, but long story short, she thinks it’s safer that way. I think she’s afraid of hurting one of us.”
“And do you think she’s right?” Jason inquired.
“I… No! I’ve told her I can handle it. But I’m not gonna push it - believe me, Jo and Emmie have given me long lectures about respecting women’s boundaries. If Cal and I wanna keep living together, I have to let it be.”
“Yeah, I can see your point.” Jason nodded.
“Besides…” Leo added after a moment, his face falling as he thought about his past. “Bad things tend to follow me. Who is to say that I wouldn’t be the one getting her into trouble?”
“Why do you think that?”
“Because when have I ever been successful with anything I’ve done?” Leo asked in return.
Jason seemed to finally understand what event Leo was really referring to. “You’re still beating yourself for things that happened years ago?”
“Why do you think I’m not capable of going to some of the lab classes? Because I simply think that skipping is fun and I don’t care whether I pass it or not?” There had been a time when Leo hadn’t cared about his school success, but back in those days he hadn’t cared about much else either. Now that he had dreams and things to live for, he hated the idea that anyone would think he’d throw it all away just because he could. His new family deserved better than that for what they had done for him.
“No, no, I was not thinking that! You just never talk about it so I assumed… whatever.” Jason didn’t want to make Leo even angrier so he decided it was better to change the topic. “Maybe we should talk about something else. I still hope that you and Cal will work it out eventually.”
“Yeah. I hope so too. Same for you and Piper.” The friends had gotten close to their destination, so Leo exclaimed quickly: “Hey, I’m smelling the pizza now! Whoever is last at the door pays!”
“That’s a bad deal because you know I’m faster than you. I train every day!” Jason pointed out but soon sprinted after him.
