Deep Work by Cal Newport

In order to make good progress on meaningful work, you have to designate long periods of time and be free from distractions, including social media and email.  Concentration is like a muscle that you have to strengthen and the internet is like adding a cheese pizza to a keto diet.  Even minor distraction like seeing an important email or getting a notification can be enough to either break your attention or divide your concentration, which leads to worse results. 

I enjoyed the book and liked the ideas it presented.  I have long thought that social media can be harmful and have felt myself in moments of boredom or study be distracted and not get much work done.  Some of the ideas presented may seem extreme at first but the results speak for themselves and the real-world examples back them up.

Reading. And loving Deep Work by Cal Newport. This quote leapt out at me. As you may know I am very interested in productivity. But it’s not because I want to be industrious. In fact I’m always surprised when people tell me how busy they think I am. I’m really not busy. I am ambitious though. And I really want to make things happen. I have dreams and I want to make them real. And I want to feel spacious. And find the most direct and effective route. So much of the time the struggles we put ourselves through are pointless. Because there really is another simpler easier way. That’s the way through I am looking for. Or the one that has the most beautiful engaging scenery to make the journey a delight. It’s a cliché, but today I want to talk about Instagram

Last night on a whim, I bought Cal Newport’s Digital Miniminalism. The book is about how we need to reframe our relationship with technology.

I am about halfway through the book now (I’m really enjoying it!) but I am not sure how much of his philosopy I subscribe to. There are lots of interesting aspects to Newport's thinking and maybe I’ll discuss those bits another time, but today I want to talk about Instagram.

I really like Instagram! Unlike Facebook, which I got when I was 13, I joined Instagram late. Most of my friends were already on it by the time I joined (aged 21).

Without Instagram, I would not have reconnected with my friend, Jodie. Nor would I have known it was Alice's birthday today!

And the few times I travelled solo last year, Instagram provided a lifeline for when I felt like loneliness might consume me. I enjoyed posting photos of where I was, and I loved connecting with people in my social circle who had also visited these places.

But I also hate Instagram. I hate how it feels like a slot machine and how I want to constantly open the app to check for updates.

So following Newport's advice, I will have the app deleted for the next seven days (okay... he advocates 30 days, but I am weak) to see if I gain a clearer idea of what role I want Instagram to play in my life. Stay tuned.
