Housebound - 2014
Morgana O'Reilly, Rima Te Wiata, Glen-Paul Waru, Ross Harper, Cameron Rhodes, Mick Innes
Review: Well, from the reviews of this that I read before I watched the movie, it seems as if I'm in the minority here in not really caring for this movie. They tried something different which I can appreciate, but overall I think it spread itself to thin and didn't really nail any of the things it tried.
The movie is a horror/comedy and starts with a woman named Kylie and her accomplice try to rob an ATM machine, which ends in them being caught, and her being placed under house arrest at her mother's house. We find out as the movie goes on that this house is a hotspot for local tragedy and history. She's assigned a probation officer, as well as a mandated counselor that comes and does sessions with her on a regular basis.
The first part of this is a haunting. We find out that the house use to be part of an asylum and an angry spirit is still hanging around the house because a counselor from the old asylum did something resulting in her death. It turns out the Kylie's probation officer is also an amateur ghost hunter, and they hunt for ghosts. These few scenes are the only ones in the movie that made me laugh, and I enjoyed quite a lot.
I was getting into the story about the haunting, but then it all of a sudden switches and the movie focuses on the fact that there has been a man living in the walls of the house without them knowing.
The fact that they decided to go with a dude living in the walls doesn't make any sense to me. They have a scene in the movie where Kylie's cell phone rings. She is on the second story of the house when the phone starts to ring. She assumes it's in her bag, and searches for it, but the phone ends up being all the way down in the basement. So, you're trying to tell me that she could clearly here her cell phone ring from the second story of the house, to the point where she thinks it's actually in the room with her, but a dude has gone unnoticed living in the walls of the house?
The movie tries to do to much. They have the haunting, the dude living in the walls, and then the end when they do the twist reveal of Kylie's counselor being the one that killed the girl in the asylum back in the day. He then tries to kill them, and chases them around the house. It all comes together in the end, and Kylie wins.
The movie was alright. In my opinion it was mediocre in all of what it tried to take on, and it makes the movie incredibly forgettable. It's also lacking on the comedy parts, and the horror parts.
5.6/10

Carrie Soto is Back
One thing I love about Taylor Jenkins Reid is her writing style, so when she released this book I was really hyped and curious to read it as it was about a tennis player whose name briefly was mentioned in another book. It was different from her previous books that went viral such as Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones.
However what I noticed about books like those and even Malibu Rising was that there was a deeper underlying message beneath the story itself, if that makes sense. For example, the story of Evelyn Hugo showcased how she rose to her fame and the significance of each husband that contributed to that. But at the same time it was about the struggles of a woman in a male dominated industry during that time and the struggles many people faced hiding their sexuality and how they were forced to manage it etc etc.
Same with Daisy Jones in which the surface of the story is the rise and the downfall of the band, but also how detrimental addiction can be, the importance of relationships (romantic or platonic) and accepting the reality that not everyone is destined to be on the same path.
That’s why I was excited to read Carrie Soto as not only was she a name that popped up in a previous book similar to Mick Riva (who reoccurred in many of the stories), I had high expectations as I was anticipating another emotional story but honestly, this book didn’t hit me the same way as the others.
Now, the other books are not completely perfect either but I still loved the emotional and bittersweet endings they both had. Carrie Soto was not at all a bad book. At first I was disappointed, however, the more I considered it, the more I realised that the story itself was quite entertaining.
Initially I was going to go off the fact that the main character was not likeable, but then I realised that I didn’t particularly find Evelyn Hugo a likeable protagonist either. But I still understood why she did what she did and sympathised with her.
However with Carrie, I just genuinely can’t think of any way to sympathise with her. Off the top of my head I remember her mother passed away which is traumatic but honestly, she had a supportive father and was incredibly successful. What irritated me was her obsession with being in the absolute number one spot, and how easily threatened she became over every little thing. I understand that she was a determined woman and coming out of retirement to hold her title was extremely courageous but overall what I’m trying to say is I just don’t think her character really had an impact on me. I didn’t really get the chance to become emotionally connected to her the way I became with Daisy or Evelyn (I’m not mentioning Nina because although I did like reading Malibu Rising, I was still disappointed by it.)
Anyway, I read this book quite a few months ago so I honestly can’t remember every single detail but all I can say that it didn’t really wow me and honestly what kept me reading it was the way the author wrote, other than that, the characters were quite difficult to endure. Although, I did appreciate how thoroughly Taylor Jenkins Reid explored Tennis in the story and the attention she gave to the sport, I don’t know a thing about it so for all I know every single thing she said could’ve been incorrect but I enjoyed reading it nevertheless.

While enslaved people were mostly overseas, in colonies, out of sight, slavery funded British wealth and institutions from the Bank of England to the Royal Mail. The extent to which modern Britain was shaped by the profits of the transatlantic slave economy was made even clearer with the launch in 2013 of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership project at University College London. It digitised the records of tens of thousands of people who claimed compensation from the government when colonial slavery was abolished in 1833, making it far easier to see how the wealth created by slavery spread throughout Britain after abolition. “Slave-ownership,” the researchers concluded, “permeated the British elites of the early 19th century and helped form the elites of the 20th century.” (Among others, it showed that David Cameron’s ancestors, and the founders of the Greene King pub chain, had enslaved people.)
But as Bell-Romero would write in his report on Caius, “the legacies of enslavement encompassed far more than the ownership of plantations and investments in the slave trade”. Scholars undertaking this kind of archival research typically look at the myriad ways in which individuals linked to an institution might have profited from slavery – ranging from direct involvement in the trade of enslaved people or the goods they produced, to one-step-removed financial interests such as holding shares in slave-trading entities such as the South Sea or East India Companies.
Bronwen Everill, an expert in the history of slavery and a fellow at Caius, points out “how widespread and mundane all of this was”. Mapping these connections, she says, simply “makes it much harder to hold the belief that Britain suddenly rose to power through its innate qualities; actually, this great wealth is linked to a very specific moment of wealth creation through the dramatic exploitation of African labour.”
This academic interest in forensically quantifying British institutions’ involvement in slavery has been steadily growing for several decades. But in recent years, this has been accompanied by calls for Britain to re-evaluate its imperial history, starting with the Rhodes Must Fall campaign in 2015. The Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 turbo-charged the debate, and in response, more institutions in the UK commissioned research on their historic links to slavery – including the Bank of England, Lloyd’s, the National Trust, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Guardian.
But as public interest in exploring and quantifying Britain’s historic links to slavery exploded in 2020, so too did a conservative backlash against “wokery”. Critics argue that the whole enterprise of examining historic links to slavery is an exercise in denigrating Britain and seeking out evidence for a foregone conclusion. Debate quickly ceases to be about the research itself – and becomes a proxy for questions of national pride. “What seems to make people really angry is the suggestion of change [in response to this sort of research], or the removal of specific things – statues, names – which is taken as a suggestion that people today should be guilty,” said Natalie Zacek, an academic at the University of Manchester who is writing a book on English universities and slavery. “I’ve never quite gotten to the bottom of that – no one is saying you, today, are a terrible person because you’re white. We’re simply saying there is another story here.”
