You step out onto your front porch, a glass of lemonade in your hand. Taking a sip you watched as JJ pushed the mower across the front lawn. He was early this morning. He’d discarded his shirt and you could see the beats of sweat along his back, along with the muscles work. He was handsome, no doubt about that.
Stepping back inside before he saw you, you went and grabbed a cold-water bottle from the fridge and headed back out. “Hey!” You called out as you walked to JJ through the fresh cut grass.
He turned around and then bent down to turn off the mower, “Hey. Everything okay?”
You nod, holding a water bottle to him, “You need to stay hydrated.”
He takes it and generously gulps it down, “Thank you.” He can’t help himself; he lets his eyes wonder down your body. He’d always thought you were beautiful. This was the one house on figure 8 he didn’t mind working out in the heat for. You were always the nicest to him too. He knew you two could never be anything. He was a pogue and you were a kook.
“You’re here early this morning. I almost missed you.” You push your sunglasses over your head.
“Yeah, I got a few more yards to get done today, so I wanted to get an early start.” He wipes the back of his hand over his forehead, leaving a small piece of grass.
“You.. you got a little,” stepping closer your slowly brought your hand to his forehead and grabbed the grass.
He watched as you leaned in, your strawberry shampoo leaving off a fragrance. He could see you had freckles along your cheeks and a small scar over your eyebrow, something he’d never noticed. He’d also never been this close to you. You were close enough he could lean in-
“Y/n!” Your dad yelled.
He’d watched as you jumped at your dad calling your name, your demeanor changing. You jumped back, looking at him and faking a smile, “yes?”
“Your mother needs help on the back porch. Leave the yard boy alone.” He took a sip of whatever was in a glass. JJ wondered if it was alcohol. His dad drank early in the mornings too. Your family was perfect though, nothing like his family.
You turned back around, “Sorry, I gotta go.”
JJ nods, “Yeah, I gotta get back to work.” He stuffs the water bottle in his back pocket, “Thanks for the water.”
You slip your glasses back over your face, nodding, “of course.” You flashed him a smile and headed back to the house. He took a moment to watch you. No one else would have caught it, but he did. He saw it because he does the same thing; the small flinch when your dad put his hand on your shoulder.
~
JJ took a sip of the red solo cup as he surveyed the beach. It was a Friday night, you were always on the beach for these parties, kook boys following you around like a bunch of lost puppies, but he hadn’t spotted you.
“You looking for someone?” John B asked from next to him.
He takes another sip, “No.”
“He is. He’s looking for y/n.” Kie smirks, sitting on the other side of JJ.
“The girl you cut grass for?” Pope asks.
“She’s just usually here.” JJ shrugs, standing.
“Maybe she has other plans than party on the beach like we all do.” Kie says, “I mean she’s a kook. Her family probably took their private jet to the Bahamas for the weekend or something.”
“Her family is literally the definition of perfect.” Pope adds, “I deliver groceries there every Tuesday and I don’t think I’ve ever seen any dirt in their house. I mean the place is spotless. Same with the yard.”
JJ takes another look around the beach, “I don’t know if they’re perfect. No one’s perfect.” He looks at Pope, “Can I tag along Tuesday to help deliver groceries?”
“So, you can see her?” John B smirks, “Dude, you’re so whipped for her.”
JJ rolls his eyes, “No, because I need the extra cash.”
Kie hums, “Sure, JJ. Okay.” She does the whip motion with her hands.
~
Okay so he did need the extra cash but also because he needed a reason to see you. He wouldn’t be back at your house until Friday to work on the lawn and he wanted to see you before then. There was something not sitting right with him and he wanted to check on you. Obviously, he can’t just show up to your house, so delivering groceries to your house with Pope? Not suspicious at all.
“I got this, Pope.” JJ says, grabbing the groceries and stepping off the dock.
Pope nods, sitting down, “Good, cause I could use a break.”
JJ heads up the dock to the house, glancing around. The yard was perfect. Nothing was out of place. Maybe he just did a good job? Even after the rainstorm last night, you’d think there would be some debris from the trees, but there was nothing. He steps up on the front porch and knocks.
You slip down the stairs, wrapped in a blanket, but your dad beats you to the door. When he opens it, it’s JJ standing there with groceries. “Delivery.” JJ holds the groceries up.
Your dad nods, opening the door, “Just set it in the kitchen.”
He glances at you as he walks by. He wonders if you’d been crying. He could see your face was splotchy and red.
“I’ll take him to the kitchen.” You say to your dad, who waves you off before stepping back into another room and closing the door. You motion for JJ to follow you, “Pope okay today?”
“Huh?” He asks, following you.
“Pope. He’s usually the one who delivers the groceries. Is he okay?” You motion to the island, “you can just set them there.”
“Oh yeah.” He sets the groceries on the island, “I needed the extra cash is all. So, I tagged along.”
You nod, “Tell him I said hey.” You look through the fridge, grabbing two coconut waters, “And give him one of these. He likes them.”
“Coconut water?” JJ asks, raising an eyebrow at you.
You laugh a little nodding, “I keep it around for Pope when he delivers. He likes them.”
JJ shakes his head, “Pope likes coconut water.” He chuckles, “Alright I’ll give him one.” He starts to step away from you but turns back around, “You weren’t at the boneyard Friday night.”
“Keeping tabs on me, Maybank?” You smirk, raising an eyebrow.
JJ blushes, “I just..”
You laugh, putting a hand on his arm, “It’s okay. I um.. I had something come up.” You slip a piece of hair behind your ear.
“Oh. Okay… well I better get going.”
“See you on Friday?” You ask, following him to the door.
He opens it and turns to you, “Bright and early Friday morning.” He smiles and you return the smile, “Bye JJ.” Your voice is soft, almost like it would burst into tears.
He didn’t want to leave but he pushed himself out the door, “Bye y/n.” and stepped off the porch. Pope was right, the house was perfect and clean. Too perfect. I mean there wasn’t anything out of place. As he makes his way back to the dock, he takes one last glance at the house to see your dad standing at the window, watching him.

CHAPTER ONE
“where it all began: in prision”
SERIES MASTERLIST
MY MASTERLIST
who is max belinsky?
concept boards for the new characters
summary: Max Belinsky and JJ Maybank are the two troublemakers of Outer Banks. Going to parties, getting into trouble, having an attitude and being the two people you don’t mess with are the perfect ways to describe them. What would happen when the two people who seem to have trouble follow them around meet? One thing is fore sure, they didn’t expect this outcome.
Tumblr media
What are the perfect words to describe Max Belinsky? Well, there’s many. The first thing that people think when they see her is: here comes trouble. Her attitude, humor and the ways to get into trouble gave her that reputation. Sometimes, she wasn’t even tying to get into trouble, but somehow it had it’s ways and it would always find her. She would be walking and then around the corner, there it was; trouble. But she got used to that life, she started to love it, always wishing for that feeling of rush it would give her. She learnt to carry the fame that the people gave her on her shoulders, with pride.
Living in the lovely Outer Banks had it’s ups and downs, more downs than anything else. For example, downs? It was far from everything. And you had two options, living in a huge mansion, having everything handed to you without moving a finger, or working your butt off every single day to have a decent meal on your table. Ups? It’s paradise on earth! Or at least for some people. But Max liked living there... well, it’s not like she had the money to get the hell out of there. But, in the meantime, she had her best friend, an island that she knew like the palm of her hand, and the desire to have the best summer of her life.
She made that pact with her best friend, Sam, since the two of them walked outside their classroom the last day of school. But, it had it’s consequences, for example, ending up on the back of a police car after a accident in an abandoned building. That’s specific, because that’s where Max was on that lovely night of Saturday.
“Max, there has to be a last time where I have you on the back of my car.” Officer Presley said while watching Max on the driving mirror. She was looking at the trees passing and then a little laugh came out of her mouth once the memory came into her mind.
“Well, it’s not my fault that Officer Johnson can’t keep himself straight.” Max tried to hold on a laugh while the face of the Officer was going on and on in her head like a broken DVD.
“You ran towards him! You jumped and that made him fall into the floor.” Officer Presley let out a big sigh to calm herself. She knew Max too well, and she understood a while back that arguing with her was not going to get her anywhere.
“It was an accident!” Max said defending herself. “I was running away, and then I tripped making me fall on top of him. It was not on purpose! That was not my intention in the begging, but, my plan worked and my friends are safe from you guys. So...” She let her back rest on the back of her seat satisfied with her actions.
“Still doesn’t make it right, Max. You’ll get in serious trouble one of these days, and it’s going to be in your record forever. You want that?” Officer Presley always tried to guide Max on the right path, which was keeping her away from getting into trouble, but Max never listened. She would always ask something to change the topic.
“How’s the wife, Jennifer?” Max asked with a smile. But when Officer Presley was about to say something, was cut off by her little radio.
“Officer Presley?” The voice spoke. Max recognised Deputy Miller’s voice and started to listen to the conversation carefully.
“Yes sr?”
“You have Miss. Belinsky with you?”
“Yes, ready to head back to the station.”
“There’s been a call about a young man showing a gun at a party. He’s in the main beach with Officer Johnson. Pick him up.”
“Yes, sr.” The car made an U turn and now they were facing the beach.
“You know, that Miller, I don’t like him. He seems like a douche bag. Is it that hard to say ‘please’?” Max said while slowly shaking her head left and right.
“He’s my boss, Max, he doesn’t have to say please.” Max rolled her eyes and then let out a big sigh, making Officer Presley look at her in the driving mirror.
“You can do better, Jennifer. Being boss around by a man that doesn’t know how to be a decent human being? Fuck that.”
“Language, Max.”
“I’m just saying! You’re so much better than those guys.” Officer Presley pulled the car over once they were on the entrance of the main beach.
“Well, you better keep that to yourself since Officer Johnson is coming.” Max turned her head to the window next to her and noticed two figures walking towards the car. It was dark, but Max was able to figure out that the tall man was the cop, and the one next to him was the freak who showed to a party with a gun.
“You want me to say to Officer Johnson what I really think? Because you know me, I will.” Max said after looking back at Officer Presley.
“Max, don’t.” She said before getting out of the car.
Max shrugged her shoulders and then went back to looking out the window. She was trying to figure out who was the guy next to Johnson, but the light outside wasn’t enough. All she could see was that he was wearing some old boots and a sleeveless shirt. Max lifted her eyebrows once the guy stretched and a piece of light made it possible to see it his arms perfectly.
“Well... damn.” Max let out a little laugh once the thought of her being attracted to a guy with a gun appeared on her mind.
Officer Presley got inside the car and Max turned to her. “Be nice.”
“What? I’m always nice.” Max said in her defence but Officer Presley gave her a serious look. “Alright, I’m going to be nice to the dude that waved a gun to a bunch of people at a party, sure!” Presley caught her sarcastic tone and then added;
“That’s not what happend.” Curiosity hit Max’s body, but couldn’t ask anything about it, since the opposite door to where Max was opened, letting the mysterious guy enter the car.
JJ Maybank. The other famous troublemaker, the one who would get himself into fights, ending up drunk and having tourons around his arms. The both knew who each other were, their reputation amongst the police and the Pogues didn’t pass unnoticed by anyone. But they didn’t say anything to each other, they turned to the front seats once Officer Johnson got inside the car and his head popped out and looked to where JJ and Max were.
“I should’ve seen this day coming, we have the two most famous teens that fuck things up in our car tonight.” Johnson said and then a little laugh come out of his mouth. It was like he was making fun of them for finally being caught, and that made Max roll her eyes. Presley got annoyed at that comment and Max let out a little smile once she noticed.
“It’s nice to see you on your two feet, Johnson.” Max said and he rolled his eyes.
“This two have been causing me headaches since they started to think for themselves.”
“Aw, I’m honored to be recognised for that.” Max said with a proud smile.
“Yeah, we should get a price or something.” JJ said and Max turned to him with a smirk. He winked at her, but she just turned back to the front seats, ignoring the wink completely.
“The only price you two are going to get are community service hours. Now, shut up and let the adults talk.” Johnson said and then closed the little window they had between the front seats and the back.
“What a lovely man.” Max said sarcastically. She turned to see the street passing on her window, but when she felt JJ moving on her side, she locked eyes with him.
“The famous Max Belinsky...” JJ said and Max furrowed her eyebrows.
“Huh?”
“It’s nice to finally meet the other supposed ‘troublemaker’.”
“Supposed?” Max asked. She felt a joking tone on his voice.
“Well, people like to call us that. But I just see two hot teenagers trying to have fun while they’re on this boring ass town.”
Max lifted an eyebrow once she heard the word ‘hot’ coming out of his mouth. “You think I’m hot?” Max expected JJ to get nervous and shy when she caught him calling her hot. But it was the opposite, JJ let out a smirk and then nodded.
“Yeah.”
“Unbelievable. You’re flirting with me on our way to the police station... I guess your reputation it’s not a fairytale.” Max turned her head to her window letting JJ know the conversation was over, but when she heard him laugh her head never turned so quickly. “What’s funny?”
“Nothing. I’ll just wait to see you in action, then.” He said and a little smirk appeared on her face. Like Max expected to see JJ nervous earlier, JJ expect the same thing once he started to flirt with her, usually that’s what the girls get when he does it on them, get all blushed, but Max rolled her eyes and then looked the other way, making JJ get even more interested in the girl he had next to him.
Tumblr media
“Looking good Kelly!” Max yelled once Presley let her get out of the car and she locked eyes with the old lady that worked next to the police station. “Nice earrings!”
Kelly gave Max a little smile and then waved at Presley, but she was giving Max a serious look witch Max responded with an innocent smile.
They carried on walking up the stairs to the police station, and once they were inside, Max gained a couple of stares from the multiple people in the room, they all knew her too well, more than they would all like to. But once Jennifer took Max to the cell at the end of the long corridor, Max was out of their sight.
“Ah... the smell of fresh coffee. I’m never going to get tired of the smell in this room.” Max said to Presley, but she locked the cell and then walked away, without giving Max one of her famous lectures.
Max sat down on the bench at the side of the room and then let her back rest on the wall. She let her eyes went over the room, she saw it a couple of months ago when she ended up there after getting caught stealing some alcohol from some Kooks. The dark walls and the cold feeling the room gave off, even if it was one of the hottest days outside. She started to let her feet go back and forth out of boredom, when she heard the cell door open again and JJ Maybank appeared in front of her.
“Behave, or I’ll add you more hours to your community service.” Officer Johnson said and JJ saluted him, wich led to Johnson rolling his eyes and then locking the cell door once again.
“Well... I guess we’re going to be here a while, I guess it’s time for us to get to know each other.”
“Do we have to?”
“C’mon, you’re my cell buddy, we do!” JJ sat down on the floor across to where Max was.
She let out a little sigh and then crossed her arms around her chest. “What do you want to know?”
“Why are you here?” As soon as JJ asked that, the memory of Officer Johnson came into Max’s mind and a little laugh escaped her mouth.
“I went to the old building on the side of the road with a bunch of my friends, and I was the distraction once the cops came.” JJ gave Max an approval nod. He indeed was. He was starting to see the girl that everyone was talking about, even though they were already in a cell.
“Being the hero, nice bro.”
“Thanks.” The opportunity that Max wanted on the car came. “And I guess you’re here for waving a gun to a bunch of people?” She didn’t hesitate asking, since the words came out of the mouth faster than she intended.
JJ let out a little laugh and then looked down. “I didn’t waved the gun. It feel from my backpack after some annoying Kook pushed me.”
“Ah, the Kooks...” Max slowly nodded. “They never fail on making us angry.”
“Exactly. They are all a bunch of rich brats.”
Max pointed at JJ with a smile. “Now, the first time we agree on something.” JJ nodded and a little laugh came out of his mouth.
“Well, that’s not right though. We both agree that the other one is pretty hot.” He said and Max shook her head confused.
“I don’t think I ever agreed on that, dude.”
“C’mon! You were totally into me when i flirted with you on the car, don’t lie.”
“You’re not that good at reading people, bro.” A little laugh escaped Max’s mouth and JJ pretend to be offended.
“For your information, I’m pretty good at this stuff.”
“Mmm? Really? I don’t think so.”
“Are you coming to the Kegger tomorrow night? I can show you there how good I am.” JJ said quickly.
“I’m usually don’t impressed.”
“Well, you haven’t met me.”
“I just did.” Max pointed at herself and then at JJ. “And... I’m still not impressed.”
JJ nodded and then a little smirk appeared on his face. “Playing hard to get. Alright, I like a good challenge.”
“Don’t call me challenge, dude.”
JJ lifted his hands into the air. “Sorry, my bad. But seriously... are you coming to the party?”
Max lifted an eyebrow and a little smirk apoyos her face. “Do you want me to?”
“See now, you’re the one who’s flirting with me.” JJ said with a smile but Max shook her head.
“This is not how I flirt, believe me.”
“I can’t believe you, it’s really hard for me, why don’t you come here and show me? Like a demonstration.”
Max let out a fake smile. “Ha, ha. Very funny.” She said sarcastically and JJ shrugged his shoulders.
“Worth the try.”
Once both of them heard a couple of steps coming from the other side, they both turned their heads to the noise, finding Deputy Miller walking towards them with a arrogant smile on his face. “Having fun you two?” He said after opening the cell door. “Ready?”
After walking inside the Deputy’s office, Max and JJ sat down across his desk. Officer Presley walked into the room followed by Johnson.
“It was time these two got what they deserve.” Johnson let out a big laugh and Max rolled her eyes. She hated watching him so happy and proud with himself.
“Johnson, calm down.” Presley said annoyed.
Deputy Miller walked into the room and then proceeded to sit down on his desk. He wasn’t taking his eyes away from some papers he had on his hands, Max started to get impatient, but she didn’t want to show it. She had her natural little smile on her face and was looking around the room, but once she stopped on JJ, he turned to her and gave her a wink. Max gave him the ‘seriously?’ look, making JJ let out a little laugh.
Deputy Miller looked up from his papers and then sighed, taking his glasses from his face and then looking back at JJ and Max.
“You’re not going to get bored of this lifestyle, aren’t you?” They both looked at each other trying to figure out who he was talking to. “I’m talking to both of you.”
“Oh, that’s good to know.” Max said and Deputy Miller shook his head disappointed.
“We have two different cases here, but we’re going to handle them equally. You two are going to do 24 hours of community service. We’re talking cleaning beaches, docks, the water...”
“24 hours?” JJ asked surprised at the amount of hours they were giving them. Deputy Miller nodded.
“I have to work, man. I can’t do 24 hours.” Max said with the same expression as JJ.
“You should’ve thought that before going into that private property.” Johnson said but Max didn’t turn to him, she kept looking at Deputy Miller, trying to figure a way out of that situation.
“Is this or it’s going to stay in you record forever.” Miller said and then turned to Max specifically. “Now, Belinsky, I don’t think your parents are going to like this... am I right?” That seemed to had hit Max on the inside, since she straightened her back and then looked down. That caught JJ’s attention, for the first time since he knew Max, she didn’t respond, and that made JJ intrigued, but when Miller turned to him he looked away from her. “Maybank. I can say the same thing for you?”
JJ cleared his thought and Max looked up to him. “Yes, sr.” They both locked eyes but then looked away after a couple of seconds.
Maybe they had more in common than just their reputation.
Tumblr media
“Dude! I seriously can’t believe we’re doing community service. This sucks!” Max said once they were out of the police station.
JJ followed her once she started to walk away. “That’s what you get for being the hero.” He said. She was about to say something but when JJ sat on the floor and proceeded to take off his boot, she stood there confused.
“What the fuck are you doing?” She asked looking down at him.
JJ smiled once he found what he was looking for. He grabbed the blunt and Max felt disgusted once she saw the little white roll on JJ’s hand.
“That’s disgusting man!” Max said, but JJ didn’t bother, he grabbed the lighter he had on his back pocket and then proceeding to light the blunt.
“It’s better than being caught with weed.” He shrugged his shoulders and then continued walking away. But then turned around to see Max still standing in the middle of the street. “You want one?” He let the smoke come out of his mouth.
“I’m good.” Max reached the back of his shorts and took the blunt out from her pocket. JJ let out a big smile after she showed him the roll, and then walked back to where Max was, handing her his lighter which she took gratefully.
“I guess we’re going to see more of each other now.” JJ said after they were both happy with their blunts and continued walking.
“I guess.” Max let the smoke come out of her mouth and she enjoyed the feeling of the slight wind that was blowing on her face. JJ turned his head to see her and noticed a little star tattoo behind her ear. He wanted to ask her about it, but the words weren’t coming out of his mouth, like he was mesmerised by her. “I’ll see tomorrow, then.” Max said before crossing the street.
“Tomorrow?” JJ asked confused.
“Don’t you want me on that kegger you’re throwing?” Max asked with a little smirk.
JJ took the blunt to his mouth and then nodded. “I’ll be looking for you!” He yelled since Max was now far away.
This time, she was the one who winked at him, leaving the poor boy with a head full of questions about the famous Max Belinsky.

series based on songs from the album ‘folklore’ by taylor swift.
author’s note: hiiii sorry i’ve been gone for a HOT second. life has been busy and inspiration has not hit me lately, but here we are and i’m excited about where this is going. pls let me know if you would like to be a part of the taglist!
Part One (the 1) | Part Three (mad woman)
Tumblr media
her.
growing up, your favorite story was Peter Pan.
the boy from Neverland stole your heart quickly and you dreamt of a place where you would never have to get old. the adults in your life always seemed stiff and unlikeable. they complained about being invited and not being invited to parties. it seemed like they were confused about what they wanted.
being raised in figure eight meant too many fancy parties with stuffy adults and pretentious kids. through most of high school, you would show up at the beginning, but sneak out half way through to spend the night surfing with JJ. he had always been your escape from the uptight life that your parents made you live. they had dreams for you to go to college or marry into money, maybe both if it worked out for them. but that wasn’t what you had wanted.
college wasn’t your scene, you couldn’t imagine spending another four years learning about places and cultures, instead of actually experiencing them. you quickly wrote college off your list when you picked up a camera for the first time. at first, you was mediocre, at best, but eventually people were paying you hundreds of dollars to shoot their weddings in your first year. your senior year of high school, you created a name for yourself and through the power of social media, you was noticed by a multi-million dollar wedding company who offered you the internship of your dreams.
your parents didn’t approve of the offer, but at eighteen, you knew you wanted this and they couldn’t stop you. you packed up your entire life into her little Subaru and left.
this internship was the gateway out of the outer banks, away from kook life, away from the heartbreak, towards a new life. a fresh start.
he would have asked you to stay, but it wasn’t that easy. JJ brought a love you had never known into your life, but he also brought a heartbreak you had never felt before.
you had an hour left in your drive and as your stomach turned, you had to remind yourself that it was your choice to come back for the summer. JJ was a part of the package deal of returning. you pulled over to the side of the winding country road. in one swift motion the car door opened and you found yourself hurling out onto the dirt road.
“I’m trying, I’m trying, I’m trying,” tears were streaming down your face as the anxiety washed over your body. there was a certain desperation in your voice that scared you. knowing that if you were near the side of the road, maybe your car would get just a little too close and you’d go tumbling down, never having to deal with what was to come.
“fuck,” you slammed the door shut, breathing in through your nose and out your mouth, watching your breathing and gripping the steering wheel like it was a lifeline. as your breathing slowed, you shifted gears and the wheels of your car found the road again.
the love you had for him was still there and it scared you more than anything in your life. and here you were, driving straight into the storm that was JJ Maybank.
JJ.
JJ felt like he was floating as he rushed around the chateau, to clean up the mess his friends made the previous night. so many things have changed, he thought, three years ago, there’s no way in hell I’d be doing this. which was true. when she left, his entire mindset shifted. she was the one person he thought he would have forever, and with the rest of his friends out of the outer banks during the school year, he had to grow up.
john b left him the chateau during the school year. free rent in order to keep up the house? sold. he made the house his home. completely renovating the little shack on the water. it was the first time in his life he was fully responsible for something big, and he wasn’t going to fuck it up. so he kept to himself, fixed up the chateau, praying every day that it would pay off. praying that she would come back to him.
he knocked on john b’s door.
“come on, man,” he yelled, “you gotta get up and clean, she’s going to be here in like an hour.”
he could hear both john b and sarah groan and shuffle around the room. sarah opened the door, rubbing her eyes and yawning. “J, you need to chill out.” she said, making her way to the kitchen.
john b was still in bed, his mouth hanging open, trying desperately to succumb to sleep again, “dude,” JJ threw a shirt at his face, “get up.”
“why does everything have to be perfect, JJ?” his voice hissed and was raspy from the early morning wakening, “it’s not like you guys left on the greatest terms, so what does it matter?”
JJ shut the door muttering a “fuck you” as he walked to the kitchen and threw the beer cans into the garbage which made an audible clang. sarah jumped as she closed the cabinet door. “JJ, chill,” she poured herself a cup of coffee as he paced around the house.
“sarah, if your asshole of a boyfriend does anythin-”
“he’s not going to do anything, JJ” she leaned against the countertop, her face almost buried in her morning coffee, “he loves Fin as much as the rest of us. she left on a high note with us, but on a bad one with you, so i get why you’re freaking out.” she paused, thinking of the best words to say, “but you can’t let her see that. she doesn’t need to have that power over you. you’ll talk it through with her this summer. i’ll make sure of it.” she touched his shoulder as she made her way back to the bedroom.
he collapsed onto the chair in the living room. closing his eyes and placing his head in his hands. “i’m trying. i’m trying so hard.”
she was coming back. this was what he had been waiting for since she left two years ago. he wanted more than anything to prove that he had changed and wasn’t the same boy she left.
her.
you wiped your hands on the side of your shorts as you pulled into the driveway of the chateau. you could feel tears pricking in the back of your eyes, and blinked in hopes of pushing them down. you put your car in park and turned off the engine. “it’s now or never, get out of the damn car.” you whispered to yourself through your teeth.
the front door of the shack opened and john b was the first to emerge the little house. you stepped out of the car just in time for him to wrap his arms around your waist and lift you off the ground. it always shocked you every time he was able to take your feet off the ground. in no way were you as physically small as sarah and kie, your curves were prominent and there were times you couldn’t shop at the same store as the other two girls, but john b always made you feel just as beautiful. he smelt of a mixture sea salt and tea tree shampoo. it felt like home.
“i missed you, Finny,” he smiled against your neck, it felt right that john b was the first one to hug you. he was the one who had been there for you the longest, and even though you didn’t want to admit it (because he was a real dumbass sometimes) his friendship meant the most to you.
“i missed you, too, JB,” you said, as he broke the hug to kiss your cheek.
sarah let out an audible squeak as she wrapped her arms around your neck. “it’s been too long!”  you both rocked back and forth. until sarah let go, knowing you had a lot of people to hug.
pope and kie were next, it only seemed fitting that they both went in for a hug at the same time, forming a little circle. when pope left the hug, you grabbed kie to hold a little longer, whispering, “where is JJ?” kie could feel your hands shake slightly, clearly nervous to see the blonde boy.
you could feel her playing with the hair on your back, “i’m not sure, Fin. he’s around here somewhere. i think he’s just as nervous as you, if not more,” she placed her arms on your shoulders, separating the hug. “he loves you a lot,” she whispered for only you to hear.
“well, he had a pretty terrible way of showing it,” you sniffed, feeling tears streaming down your face. the entire scene was so overwhelming.
you had missed the sound of the waves crashing against the shore and watching the HMS pogue sway with the waves. you missed the salty air and the humidity that summer brought. you missed the sight of the chateau, while more fixed up now, just a little shack on the beach. you had missed this little family of yours.
“so,” john b clapped his hands together. “dinner?” everyone agreed in unison knowing the pizza that was awaiting them inside. kie and sarah wrapped their arms around your shoulders as everyone walked up the steps of the chateau.
it felt like a little piece of your heart was getting put back together. your friends were more of your family than your actual family ever had been. you breathed a small sigh of relief knowing the one person who you didn’t want to see wasn’t inside. whether you liked it or not, he would be around the next three months.
stepping inside you could see the amount of work that had been put into the home since you had last left. there were new coats of paint, new pieces of furniture, and there was a wall of pictures hanging up of the six friends in the different seasons of their lives. even the photos you had sent of your adventures in colorado were up there. you felt your stomach drop with the thought that your friends never actually forgot about you. instead, they were always supporting you from afar. tears pricked at your eyes. it was like coming home.
your eye caught a particular picture. it opened up an old wound you had spent so many years pushing down. it was you and JJ the summer before you left at the beach. his sandy blond hair pooling over your face as he looked down at you. it was a particularly warm day and instead of spending the day on the hms pogue, the gang had ventured out to the actual beach. it was one of your favorite days with JJ. you remember it being a day of snow cones and sandy butt cheeks and hitting a volleyball around the beach. it was like everyone agreed to fill an entire day with all of the summer adventures. it was a dream. until it wasn’t.
JJ.
he stood in the driveway of the chateau two hours after she arrived.
while the outer banks always had an ungodly amount of humidity, his hands were sweating more than usual. he chewed his bottom lip, unsure of where to go or what to do next. did he wait for her to come out? should he just walk through the door? it was technically his home and she was just visiting. no, it was definitely her home once too.
he ran his fingers through his hair, he knew he needed to see her. it had been two years since he had spoken to his best friend. but she was within walking distance. he could yell her name like all those nights after she left, but this time, she would hear him. he could run to her and wrap his arms around her waist and feel her warmth, her curves, her beauty and never let go. he could hear her laugh and listen to the stories of the adventures she’s been on, see the pictures she had taken. he wanted nothing more than to kiss her lips, and feel her love again.
the outer banks wasn’t big. so the entire town had known what he had done when she left. it was clear that she was running from him, but he didn’t blame her for any of it. if he was in her situation, he would run too.
he started to walk to the door, his legs felt like jelly, but it had been some time since she got there and he hoped she would be distracted by the others that he could just slip inside and listen to her talk from his bedroom.
the first thing he saw was her walk down the stairs, she was barefoot and her skin a golden brown. her t-shirt came down past past her hips and he was unsure if she was wearing any shorts underneath. it was by far his favorite thing she wore when they were dating. her hair had grew and was now far past her shoulders and cascaded down the front of her chest.
as his eyes came up, he locked eyes with the girl he loved since he was ten. and then his entire body went cold.

Just Friends IV / Drew Starkey
Tumblr media
not my gif, credits to owner!
A/N: Part four is here, honestly this is my favorite part at the moment, I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writting it.
Summary: You and Drew have been friends forever, and when you start to acknowledge your feelings for him, he is casted on Netflix’s show ‘Outer Banks’.
Pairing: Drew Starkey x reader.
Warnings: Being drunk, puking and period blood.
Word count: 1,211.
Saying that you were a bit tipsy was not the correct way of saying how you were feeling. You didn’t feel like you had drank as much, but apparently your body was thinking something else. ‘Hey, we had a talk talking and we talked.’ You sat next to Madelyn and Chase.
‘Yeah that’s usually how conversations work.’ Chase said laughing.
‘What are you even talking about, y/n?’ Madelyn asked in a very curious way.
‘We... He… Yeah he told me…’ You weren’t even realizing your words didn’t make any sense.
‘Honey, you’re not making any sense.’ Madelyn said laughing. ‘How many drinks did you have?’
‘I don’t know? Three? Maybe four? Maybe more? I have no idea to be honest.’ You said chuckling.
‘Okay, try to tell me what you were saying.’ You tried to tell them the conversation you had with Drew on the car, focusing very hard not to skip any detail. Since when is it so hard to focus on talking? You thought. When you were done you looked at Madelyn and Chase, who were looking at you smiling, especially Madelyn.
‘What? What is it? Did I talk too loud? Do I have something on my face?’ You said, taking your phone from your pocket to look at yourself in the reflection.
‘No, no. It’s just… It’s good news I guess. He’s not with her so you can tell him how you feel now, like you said.’ Madelyn seemed happy.
‘And he’s been looking at us back and forth since you sat.’ Chase said proudly.
‘What?’ You said, searching for him and meeting his eyes. He smiled and your heart skipped a beat. You smiled back, but you started feeling unwell, and he seemed to notice because he stopped smiling and looked at you in a protective way. ‘I think I’m gonna be sick.’ As soon as you said that you got up and ran towards the bathroom, getting there just in time to puke inside the toilet.
‘Y/n? Are you okay? Can I come in?’ Drew asked, by the bathroom’s door. ‘Shit.’ you mumbled. ‘Yeah, no, I’m okay. Don’t worry, I was just feeling a little nauseous.’ You said, getting up from the floor. You opened the door to find Drew waiting outside, he looked at you with worried eyes. ‘Hey, you alright?’ He said softly. ‘Yeah, but I think I’m ready to go home.’ He offered you his hand and you took it, following him. ‘Let’s go.’
‘Hey guys, we’re leaving. Y/n is not feeling well, so we’re gonna go home.’ He said, still holding your hand. You looked at Madelyn, who winked at you, and you smiled a little.
‘Get well soon, y/n!’ Jonathan said. You waved at them and left with Drew. To you, holding his hand felt like you were in the safest place on earth, there were no problems around, nothing to worry about.
The ride home was silent, but this time it wasn’t uncomfortable. Drew kept checking on you everytime he had to stop at a traffic light, making sure you didn’t need to get out of the car.
When you arrived he kept helping you, he filled a glass of water and placed it on your night table while you were trying unsuccessfully to brush your hair. ‘Ow, that hurted.’ You whined. ‘Here, let me do it.’ Drew took the hairbrush from your hand and started grooming your hair softly. He knew that touching your hair in any way made you sleepy so he smiled when he saw you closing your eyes. ‘Come on, all done, get in bed.’
‘Okay, dad.’ You said, moving towards your bed.
‘Now you’re just trying to turn me on.’ He said jokingly.
‘And what are you going to do about it?’ You tried to tease him.
‘Come on, get some sleep, you drunk idiot.’ He said laughing.
‘Hey, I’m not drunk.’ You said.
‘Yeah, sure.’ He said, moving towards the door to leave you to sleep. You stopped him, taking his hand. ‘Wait, I want to tell you something, come sit here.’ You touched the sheets to ask him to sit there with you.
‘What is it?’ His heart was racing, but yours was too. ‘Just... Thank you for taking care of me. You’re the best.’
‘You don’t have to thank me, you know you would’ve done the s-’ You didn’t let him finish, you crashed your lips into his, still holding his hand. At first he kissed you back, placing his other hand behind your neck and letting out a soft almost inaudible moan, but then he broke the kiss. ‘You’re so wasted.’ He said, getting up from the bed and leaving. And before you could reply you were deeply asleep.
When you woke up the sheets were wrapped around your body in the most uncomfortable way possible. You got out of bed and went to the bathroom. ‘Shit.’ You saw the blood on your underwear. Now last night’s sickness makes much more sense. I knew I didn’t drink that much, you thought. You got a pad from the drawer and put it on.
You entered the living room with your back arched because of the cramps you were having because of your period. ‘I want to die.’ You murmured.
‘Not on my watch.’ You jumped and let out a small cry, covering your mouth. You turned to see Drew on the couch, looking at you like he was having the most fun day ever.
‘God, you scared the shit out of me.’ Drew was laughing loudly now. ‘It’s not funny, I could have died!’
‘Isn’t that what you were asking for?’ He said, still laughing.
‘Someone woke up feeling funny today.’ You started preparing something to eat, but you stopped being hungry. ‘How are you? Is your hangover treating you well?’ He asked.
‘It’s not a hangover, I have my period so I’m feeling like death right now.’
‘Do you even remember anything from last night?’ He sounded cautious.
‘I remember you brushing my hair and falling asleep. See? I was not so drunk. Still have my memory intact.’ You said, tapping a finger twice on your temple.
‘Sure. Do you want something to eat? Chocolate? Ice-cream? I can go to the store and get it for you.’
‘Not right now, but thanks. Can you keep me company on the couch for a while?’ You looked at him innocently.
‘Of course, come here.’ You went next to him and sat on the couch, trying to find a comfortable position to stay in. You ended with your head on his lap and your legs on the armrest of the couch. He started moving his fingers softly on your arm, letting you know that he was there with you.
You spent the day on the couch, watching films that you knew would make you cry like a baby and Drew finding it amusing. He got you ice-cream and chocolate and all the sugar-based food he could find at the store. He took care of you like he had done before, knowing what was good for you at each moment. When you fell asleep he kissed your forehead softly, looking at you lovingly and wishing you would stay like that forever.

Music flowed through the Chateau as Y/N sauntered out of the spare room, aka JJ’s room, towel drying her hair and subtly dancing along to the melodies of Hozier. She was currently decked out in JJ’s hoodie and board shorts as she stood in the living room and admired what she’d done. Having snuck over just past the asscrack of dawn after JJ and John B headed their separate ways for work, she got to work herself giving the Chateau a major facelift that included a deep cleaning, some new throw pillows, and a freshly stocked kitchen. She’d managed to finish with enough time to give herself a shower, washing away all the sweat and grime she’d accumulated over the course of revamping the disgusting bachelor pad. Her phone chimed with a text from John B just as she opened the front door for the pizza guy.
‘Leaving figure 8 want me to get u?’
‘I’m actually out right now, meet you there?’
‘Sounds good 👍🏼’
She set the pizza boxes on the counter and gave the place a final look over as she sat on the edge of the couch to wait, but she began to grow impatient. Her left knee bounced erratically as she checked her watch every two minutes. She stood with a huff, walking to the kitchen and grabbing a slice, deciding not to wait for them anymore, and just as she took the first bite John B threw the front door open.
“Damn, how did you beat me?” He asked, head down as he came through the door and he let out a soft gasp when his eyes lifted from the doorknob, “oh my god, you did not.” He said, eyes scanning the room in amazement as he saw the place the cleanest it had ever been.
“I did! Welcome to your clean home!” She said in between bites, and she set her slice down as John B crossed the room and wrapped her in a bear hug. Pope and Kie were only seconds behind, muttering ‘holy shit’ in unison. John B kept an arm around her waist as he pulled away.
“I can’t even believe you did this, this is so nice.” He said and a grin overtook her features.
“I wanted to John B, I want you and JJ to be taken care of.” She leaned up and pressed a kiss to his cheek and stepped past him to open the cabinet under the sink, “but you see this? These are all the new cleaning supplies I bought you, there are sticky notes on everything telling you how to use it, what to use it on, and how often. Please for the love of god utilize it because I saw some shit in here that will haunt my nightmares for the foreseeable future.”
He chuckled and put a hand on the back of his neck, “yeah, it was pretty bad wasn’t it?”
“What was pretty bad?” JJ asked, walking through the front door, “holy shit.”
“That’s what I said,” Pope replied.
“Who did this, Y/N?” Everyone nodded and he crossed the room to give her a high five, “what the fuck, you’re so nice.” She let out a loud laugh.
“That’s the JJ version of ‘thank you’, I’m pretty sure,” Kie said, and as everyone laughed Y/N encouraged them to grab a slice. They migrated to the front porch food in hand, and before long they were down in the yard huddled around the fire-pit as the crickets sounded in the distance. Hues of red and orange illuminated each of their faces and their laughter echoed through the yard as Y/N effortlessly plucked the strings of her guitar delicately in the background. She smiled at JJ who was rolling a joint and he looked up at her, cheeks flushing when he noticed her gaze was already on him.
“What?” He asked, tongue flicking over the seam of the joint.
“Just checking your progress on that joint.” She smirked, and he chuckled before sticking it between his lips and lighting it.
“Just when I thought JJ smoked a lot of weed you came along and proved me wrong.” Pope said, eliciting a giggle from Y/N as she put her guitar down and accepted the joint from JJ, “and you’re so much more productive than him it doesn’t make sense.” She really laughed now, smoke puffing out of her nose at the unexpected jab at JJ.
“It’s the LA lifestyle, man.” She said, taking another hit, throwing on a cheesy grin and as Kie pointed a camera at her. This was life in the Outer Banks, and she loved it way more than she thought she would. Having come from such a vibrant and flowing city it was hard to adjust to the laid back pace of OBX, the friendly vibe throughout town where everyone knew everyone. She’d always secretly looked down on small-town life. When her dad moved she couldn’t even begin to wrap her mind around why he’d left but in the short six weeks she’d been here, she now knew all too well. The joint was gone as quick as it had been procured, having been shared between her, JJ and Kie and as Y/N laid against the cool ground she couldn’t help but smile as JJ followed. The two of them laid shoulder to shoulder looking up at the crystal clear sky, occasionally pitching into the conversation between their friends.
“Hey… I know I didn’t properly say it earlier but, thank you for what you did today.” He said softly, tilting his head towards her slightly.
“What did I- oh! That,” the day had been so long that mixed with the beer and weed she’d honestly forgotten what her morning had entailed, “seriously it’s no big, I’m happy to do it.” She laid a hand on top of his, which were folded on his chest.
“I know, it’s just… you don’t have to take care of us, but I’m kind of glad you are, despite how damaging it is to my ego.”
“If it helps you can think of it as benefiting from the Kook lifestyle that’s shit on you for so many years?” She asked and everyone laughed out loud, she hadn’t realized the other three were tuned into their conversation.
“She makes a good point, JJ.” John B said, and they both sat up, “but that doesn’t mean we’ll ever stop being grateful.”
“You wanna know how you guys can thank me?” She asked, and they both nodded their heads, “can I crash here tonight? I’m too tired and buzzed to drive at the moment.”
“Oh, yeah. You can crash here whenever you want, you don’t have to ask.” John B said almost dismissively as if he was amused by her simple request. As if on cue she was wracked with a massive yawn that she tried to hide by burying her face in her sweater paws.
“I’m pretty sure that was the cutest thing I’ve ever seen,” Kie said, snapping another picture of her and somewhere in the back of her sleepy mind she thought about how grateful she was to have friends that photographed everything not for their Instagrams but for each other, so they would always remember these summer nights.
“Yeah, same.” Pope agreed, the two of them were looking at her like she was a puppy and she giggled as she hid her face again.
“Come on, sleepy one. I’ll help you to bed.” JJ said, standing and holding his hands out to her. She stood and waved her hand and the mess they’d left, making a mental note to deal with it in the morning and bid goodnight to everyone.
“He’s so whipped already,” Pope whispered and everyone started snickering. Y/N was too tired to have heard, and if she had she wouldn’t have been able to process it anyway, but JJ heard loud and clear and flipped them the bird over his shoulder. His hand guided her by the small of her back as they walked through the house and after sending her down the hallway he grabbed her a glass of water from the kitchen. Her footsteps were practically shuffles as she approached JJ’s bed and kicked her shoes off. She threw the blankets back and crawled in, tugging the blankets on as she tried to cocoon herself in comfort. JJ entered the room and chuckled as he saw her, and she sat right back up with a soft smile when she saw him.
“Thank you,” she said before taking a sip and as she set the glass on the nightstand she watched JJ fidget awkwardly through her heavy lids.
“Alright, well I’ll leave you-”
“Stay with me?” She interrupted, patting the mattress beside her.
“Oh, it’s okay… you don’t have to- I don’t mind sleeping on the couch.”
“JJ.” She said, looking at him deadpan as she lifted the covers, “it’s just two friends sharing a bed.” She said and she smiled as he slid in next to her, “plus, I really hate sleeping alone.” They settled in, and for the first time in a long time, JJ felt nervous. It wasn’t the first time he’d had a beautiful girl next to him in bed, but it was the first time he’d had Y/N in his bed and it felt… right.
“I’ll deny it if you say anything, but… me too.” He lifted his arm and she immediately snuggled into his chest, exhaling as she relaxed against him. “You’re pretty amazing, you know that?”
She sighed dramatically, “yeah, it’s about time you mention it.” She giggled, “don’t get all sappy on me now, JJ.”
“I’m not, I’m not.” He playfully swatted the arm that was draped across him, “so, check-in. How you likin’ Pogue Life?”
“I love it, I feel… I don’t know, free? I guess I’ve never really known what real friends feel like. I’ve only known you guys for a couple of weeks, but like... I’d definitely hide some bodies for you guys.” She joked, “every time I came to visit my dad I thought this place was Boringville, USA, but I guess I never really explored past Figure 8.”
“Most Kooks don’t, don’t feel bad for overlooking the splendors of the Cut.”
“I’m pretty sure this is the most comfortable I’ve ever been.” If she was a cat, she was certain she’d be purring and JJ looked down at her, taking in her lopsided smile and closed eyes.
“How stoned are you?”
“10.” He shook his head and laughed, “maybe 11.”
“Stoned enough to forget Pogue rules?” He asked, half-teasing as his fingers began tickling her sides and she squealed as she tried to turn away from him. Her laughter was filling the room and flowing out the open window into the humid night as she tried her hardest to fight off his attacks.
Outside the three shared a look and John B took a sip of his beer with raised eyebrows, “well, at least they’re not fucking?”
“At least I hope not,” Pope said with a grimace as another bought of laughter floated through the breeze, and Kie downed the rest of her beer before turning the music up a little to offset the sound coming from the back of the house.
JJ finally relented, giving her a chance to catch her breath as she wiped the tears that were streaming down her cheeks from laughing. She turned her body away from him, pretending to be upset and he chuckled as he pressed against her, laughing again when her body jerked feeling his arm move over her waist, bracing for another onslaught of torture.
“I come in peace.” He whispered and she relaxed against him.
“You’re evil.” She muttered, eyes drifting closed as sleep began to tug at her mind.
“You’re exhausted, get some sleep.” She took a deep breath, exhaling as she snuggled back against him, her hand finding his under the covers.
“You get some sleep.” She said, trying to be sharp and teasing but the words came out slurred and raspy as she fought for the last shreds of consciousness.
“I will, just as soon as you do, sweetheart.”
She hummed, “alright. Goodnight, JJ.”
“Goodnight, Y/N.”

I’ve never actually been to one cause they don’t have one anywhere near me (they’re on the east coast, I’m a west coast gal). I’ve only had the the White Castle burgers from the store that you cook in the microwave. I actually like them, but I’m sure the real deal is even better. X
Why did you need your most recent x-ray and what were the results? I had to get a CT Scan a couple years ago. When it comes to ‘xoxo’, do you interpret ‘x’ as the hug or the kiss?  It’s hugs and kisses, so the X’s are hugs. What does X stand for in Roman numerals? Can you write the previous number?  X is 10, IX is 9. Why do you think xylophones are only popular with young children? That’s true, that is a pretty common baby toy. At least it was when I was little. Also, I played the xylophone in music class in elementary school. I don’t know why that’s a thing with kids. Y

Underwater America: The Outer Banks and the Graveyard of the Atlantic
SCUBA diving is an oftentimes exciting experience. With each dive spot we visit, my crew and I gain a greater understanding of the underwater world—although let’s face it, some of us are in it for the thrill. In the past week we seemed to have plenty of them, exploring wrecks and coral reefs and interacting with the aquatic life that inhabit within. It had gotten to the point, of course, where we couldn’t seem to go a day without diving. Unfortunately, though, that seemed to be the case, as our next destination would be several states and many hours away. We were able to get some sort of a head start by leaving Key West late in the evening, sleeping at a motel in Melbourne, and leaving just before the break of dawn and before I-95’s familiar heavy traffic. “I’m bored,” Squiddly, riding shotgun that day, said to me, his tentacles barely moving. “Sorry, Squiddly. I know it’s a pain having to endure seeing nothing but cars for hours on end.” “Who said anything about boredom, to begin with?” was how Mildew Wolf parsed it—and, close at hand, Breezly Bruin could be starting to doze off, feeling slightly drowsy. “On the other hand,” Loopy de Loop remarked, “it always pays to imagine the very possibilities of our next diving journey—and after such a wonderful time in the Keys, who couldn’t swear it was almost like Paradise to a diver?” “I agree, Loopy baby, even if it seems like another day away!” Hokey chuckled, resisting the urge to try to put his feet up on the driver’s seat. “I guess we could use a little pick-me-up,” I said, sensing the need for nourishment as we drove past the Florida–Georgia line. “We won’t dive there today, but if you’d like, we could go to Hilton Head Island or Myrtle Beach and relax there. No exploring or anything.” “Which,” Magilla chimed in, “suits me just fine. Besides, I could use a little stretching of the old muscles every now and then!” To which Hardy Har-Har chimed in, “You can say that again—” “The name’s Magilla Gorilla.” “And I am Hardy Har-Har. Don’t let my myopic looks or personality fool you.” “Meanwhile, what’s there to be fooled in Magilla himself?” “This I have to see to believe!” was how Mildew Wolf snarkily parsed it. “Meanwhile,” Loopy de Loop chimed in with inherent Québécois charm, “I can’t help but recall just how wonderfully blue Okoboji was when we were diving there just weeks back…and how equally blue the waters off the Keys seem to be.” “Hence,” Mildew rejoindered, “I take back any and all remark about laundry bluing explaining the blueness of Lake Okoboji. It was more or less intended in jest.” “I’d have to concur with Loopy,” was how Magilla added to the conversation, “when it came to just how remarkably clear those Keys waters can get to be…on a par with Okoboji!” “We need to cool off!” Wally said, wiping sweat off his brows as the sun’s rays continued to hit. “All right, we’ll do it. We’ll stop for breakfast in a little while. I’m sure we’re all hungry, anyway.” After getting a diver’s breakfast at a restaurant in Brunswick, we continued up I-95, eventually crossing into South Carolina. The lighthouse with the red-and-white stripes—otherwise known as the Harbour Town Lighthouse—was the sign that we had arrived in Hilton Head Island, one of the South’s growing tourist resorts. We donned our masks, harnesses, tanks and fins and, following the customary dive-and-safety briefing, we waddled into the beach, much to the bemusement of maybe one or two people looking on, wondering about those weird animals and their hobbies. This moment of fun and sun would be the prelude—and antithesis—to a dive both dark and historical: the Graveyard of the Atlantic in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, a stretch of land and ocean that holds many stories and secrets.
Tumblr media
Just about each of us had their own ideas for fun. “Just about,” I say, as I was content to just hold the film camera, slowly kick my legs as the fins bent upward and downward in a somewhat hypnotic motion, and watch. My friends discuss the joy that was had for about an hour that perfect day. As Magilla observed the town itself: “For a somewhat emerging resort as may not quite be Disney World, the underwater scene off Hilton Head may seem a little basic…but at least you had an opportunity to stretch out the muscles for the dive ahead.” And Mildew: “So it’s probably just ocean sand…yet you got an opportunity to basically recline on the bottom and kick back for just a few minutes.” Wally’s reply: “You know I had to join you. It never gets old, Mildew. Reminds me of the zoo! The better memories…” Breezly’s commentary: “Rather interesting dive discovery…and what an interesting way to relax, reclining on the sand alongside Mildew Wolf!” And here’s Squiddly: “Not interesting enough to go into the history books anytime soon, but whatever floats your boat, I suppose! Now this, meanwhile, is living…” he said, over footage of him spinning his tentacles as though they were the blades of a helicopter. Meanwhile, some others were playing tag, with Lippy commenting over grabbing Hardy’s fin: “Don’t sweat it, Hardy. Someday you’ll get the hang of underwater tag.” Here’s Loopy to close out the commentary: “‘Loopy,’ I said to myself, ‘is there nothing sacred when it comes to what you can do while diving?’ And I answer to myself, ‘what is there to be considered sacred?’” Without a boat, we simply came out the way we came in, like ten underwater monsters after human flesh. The hour well spent and our appetites well sated, we continued on our journey across I-95, reaching the town of Beaufort, North Carolina, in Cape Fear, by night, where we would get ourselves a nice dinner and lodging. Having consulted a guide book that evening for some possible wreck sites, I discussed a possible course of action for tomorrow with Magilla and Squiddly over some vending-machine coffee. Squiddly patiently waited for his cup to fill while I laid back against the wall with my cup in hand. “So we have two options,” I said to Magilla. “We could do a dive with more bottom time first, or the real deep one. The shallow dive will be the Hesperides while we tackle the City of Atlanta the day after. We can afford to do two days’ worth of dives here.” Magilla, nursing a cup of vending-machine coffee himself as was gradually becoming tepid by the long intervals between sips, couldn’t help but be fascinated at the idea offered. Especially considering where they would likely be able to do two days’ dives in the right conditions. “So, have any preference?” I asked the two of them, with Squiddly carefully handling his cup of coffee, rightly requiring two of his tentacles to do so. “We could do City of Atlanta first,” Squiddly said, wincing as he realized it was going to be difficult to set a cup of coffee down on the table with one tentacle holding the bottom, one wrapped around the cup, and both getting quickly warm. “That way I could go back there solo and get in a lot more deep wrecks. It’s no problem. You can go without me!” “Pretty amusing thing that Squiddly Diddly has for deep wrecks,” Magilla remarked. “And you wonder how that’s possible, particularly remembering his background as shallow-pool fodder back at Bubbleland.” “It’s not that I have a thing for them,” Squiddly replied with his brow arched as I helped him set down the cup. “It’s just that these wrecks may be deeper, and you oughta know you can’t do multiple deep dives like that with all that nitrogen buildup. That doesn’t affect me.” “Are you sure you’ll be fine?” I asked. “Now that the cup’s on the table, yeah, I’m sure,” Squiddly smiled. “That, plus the diving.” “Might it be possible,” Magilla asked, “that we might have to schedule the dive for just after daybreak, or maybe wait a couple hours after?” “We can conduct the dive late in the morning,” I said. “Given the depth, we wouldn’t want to be down that long.” But at any rate, even with Magilla’s coffee having become cold, he couldn’t help but sense a feeling of intrigue as to what could easily ensue at the sight of such an interesting wreck as the City of Atlanta. Especially the circumstances under which it was brought down. “As a matter of fact, Peter,” Magilla was prompted to ask, “what’s especially interesting about the City of Atlanta wreck?” “It’s got quite a history. It was one of the ships brought down by German U-boats during World War II. Plus, it’s within diving range for us. I’ll bring it up with the others,” I said, finding the coffee cool enough to finish with ease. “I’m sure there’ll be no objections.” And indeed, there weren’t. With the discussion over and my colleagues agreeing to the arrangement, we checked out just before seven in the morning in order to get breakfast, then continue north to the town of Buxton on Hatteras Island, where we would charter a boat to take us to our site. The conditions were right: few clouds, and the temperatures were considerably warm. Even so, we were prepared to take precautions given the depth of our dive. "Heavens to Jacques Cousteau!” Coming from the wheelhouse of the diveboat Diver’s Home Companion, such was certain to bring a sense of weird familiarity as our crew headed out to the City of Atlanta wreck site. “’Tis I, Snagglepuss, something of a legend among dive boat captains here in the Outer Banks.” “Jeez,” Mildew Wolf observed, “isn’t that voice a little familiar, albeit vaguely?” To which Wally Gator added, “Where have we last seen him?” Our team happily greeted Snagglepuss, a close friend of ours, upon hearing the familiar voice, although a few of us were curious as to what he was doing there. “That’s quite a coincidence,” Lippy said, scratching his head. “You’re on vacation, too?” Although I wouldn’t call it a vacation in the traditional sense, we were having good fun anyway. “Aaaaahhhh…to be among sea breezes, the gentle sway of the waves, the allure of the legendary wrecks as dot the Outer Banks—The Graveyard of the Atlantic, even!…Now what did you have in mind, Bluebeard’s legendary vessel, Queen Anne’s Revenge?” “Nope,” I said with a light chuckle. “We’re going to be exploring a World War II wreck, the City of Atlanta.” “I have heard something about the City of Atlanta in certain divers’ circles out this way,” Snagglepuss remarked. “It was U-boat action, wasn’t it?” “That’s right. We’re all going down there. You know, we could use one more.” “Provided we find a wetsuit that fits ya first!” exclaimed Hokey with his sly grin. “I do acknowledge,” Snagglepuss explained, “having done some diving here and there: Catalina Island, Hanamua Bay, the Florida Keys, even…and you can’t help but discover the challenges each dive brings about!” “You coulda joined us, Snag, old friend! We woulda spoken about old times inbetween dives!” Hokey said as he looked through the wetsuits to find out which was his. And in Loopy’s own case, it wasn’t quite hard to find his wetsuit—the one with a fleur-de-lis over his right breast, in the Québécois fashion. Fitting the wetsuit over such a furry body, however, could be regarded as easier said than done—particularly if you wanted to avoid getting the wetsuit’s zipper being caught in the fur. I, however, didn’t care much for fashion: just a simple black suit, with no markings to tell it apart: I was the only one who wore a wetsuit that large. “You didn’t dive alone, did you, Snag?” “I do acknowledge,” Snagglepuss remarked, “diving by myself…and finding a few companions here and there.” I groaned at the thought of such a dangerous thing. “Yeah, you shouldn’t do that,” I said, sighing as I zipped up. “If something happened to you, nobody’d be there to help you.” “I don’t think the fish swimming by you are that smart, anyway!” Squiddly added. Breezly chimed in, “I believe there’s an old saying to the effect of ‘dive alone, die alone’; am I correct?” I nodded. “I’m not much into sayings, but that’s absolutely correct. Although, Snag, you’ll have plenty of companions here, provided you join us!” “Hopefully, you do have a spare wetsuit as fits me!” was how Snagglepuss met the challenge. Hardy and Mildew offered to check the stock to find just the right one, and while it took a few minutes’ searching, one pretty close in size to Snag’s frame and dimensions did turn up. And once invited to fit the wetsuit, Snag admitted that it felt a little loose, but “at least it should suffice. Especially for such an interesting venue as you have in mind…and I guess we are approaching the same, judging by the coordinates you gave, Peter!” “We’ll be doing two dives in Buxton,” I said, showing Snag the map. “Tomorrow we’ll explore the Hesperides—it’s a dive with lots of bottom time and warmer waters.” “Oh, I’ve heard also of the Hesperides wreck! Didn’t that involve a load of pig iron complicated by a shifting sea bottom?” “Sure did. You’ll get to enjoy warm water against your fur tomorrow, but for now, we need to plot this dive out.” Snagglepuss piloted the dive boat miles out into the Atlantic Ocean. Once the boat came to a full stop, we hoisted the “diver down” signal and donned the rest of our gear. It seemed much heavier, since in addition to the usual gear we also had a wetsuit and a hood on. Although it was a very warm day, we weren’t about to take chances in what was ninety-foot water. Naturally, with the extra diver and extra equipment, it was a bit more crowded. Our dive time was going to be only thirty minutes at ninety feet with a five-minute stop at fifteen feet, so we had better make the most of all our time. Naturally, Squiddly would be there a bit longer to take care of any other nearby wrecks in the area and get off a few good shots. There was the usual safety briefing, and Snag was all ears this time. As we had an odd number of divers, I had Snag teamed up with Hokey and Wally. “All right, everyone,” said I, wearing the mask over the eyes, “Good diving.” With regulator in mouth between my teeth, we all entered backward in unison, Squiddly leading the way with a rope to aid in finding our way back. Believe you me, the wetsuit couldn’t have been rather comfortable. Such seemed to be the consensus among us in the dive, considering such rather chilly waters as these. Snagglepuss couldn’t agree more, considering the situation to hand; even then, the feeling of neoprene rubber against fur was a little unusual, it probably having been awhile since he dived thus. All of us stayed close as the sun penetrated the water less and less and things grew darker. We were about to go face-to-face with World War II history, one of the many casualties of America’s “Torpedo Junction.” Traveling from New York to Savannah, the City of Atlanta was noticed by a German U-boat on January 18, 1942, despite an attempt to remain discreet. Past midnight into January 19, one torpedo shot was fired—and was enough. The blast was so powerful that people from what is now the town of Avon, seven miles away, awoke. Of the 46 people on board, only three survived. We arrived at the stern of the ship, where we would all meet when we were done. We then started exploring the boat and discovered that most of whatever was left was flattened. Nevertheless, there was still plenty to explore. And given such a depth, and the general murkiness of the waters surrounding the wreck, flashlights and wetsuits seemed like welcome company considering just how intense the U-123’s shelling damaged the City of Atlanta enough to quickly bring her to ruin. Time, admittedly, did her number on the wreck, but the wheel as was one with its steering system could still be discerned though barnacles grew around its edges. Snagglepuss and companions in particular couldn’t help but notice how intact the engine and boilers remained; even shining a light on same revealed just how the barnacles had built up. Squiddly was able to get behind the boilers and film several divers—namely, Mildew and Loopy—swimming up and over it in the hope that the port side of the ship had anything interesting on view. The Diving Wolves, as they were, discerned a piece of the ship’s boiler which managed to survive the onslaught, chilled all these years in 90-feet waters…and even in the curiosity, Mildew’s flashlight gave out for some reason, prompting Loopy, through hand signs, to offer sharing with Mildew. Accepted. While Squiddly stayed with the wolves, I saw Hokey and Wally examining the port side, swimming along the sides of a boat to get a better idea of how it may have looked in a better time. While there wasn’t enough to go on, there was still plenty visible—never mind just how destructive the torpedoes from U-123 made quick work of the City of Atlanta, and the later flagging of the area as a hazard to marine navigation. It must seem rather amazing, Breezly Bruin thought to himself in the height of the dive, how the engine and boilers could have survived such destruction to begin with. Yet as a wreck, he had to be conscious of what it was and that care had to be taken around same, never mind the growths of barnacles all this time. Another interesting discovery: though barely visible through the sand of the bottom, Snagglepuss couldn’t help but notice a piece of the brass screw propeller as propelled the City of Atlanta all the while. Thankfully, Snag decided against shovelling out the propeller’s remains, recognising the wreck’s importance. Fortunately, I was able to get this discovery just as our time was just about up. We made our slow ascent at the rate of one foot every two seconds—it took a good two-and-a-half minutes to reach the decompression stage, which required an additional five minutes of waiting. Squiddly wanted to go up as well, if only to change the film in the camera for a new reel. Admittedly, we wouldn’t blame Squiddly for having to change the film, but decompression was decompression. And we could no doubt imagine what would emerge from the raw footage in the end. Once the decompression stop was complete, we climbed out of the water, eager to get out of the gear. Wally was one of those not ready to bake in the wetsuit. “Fuddle-dee-doo,” muttered Wally. “I understand the need for it, but it wasn’t that comfy!” Nor would Hardy Har Har have persisted in the wetsuit (“Ohh dear. How much longer would it have been likely before being dehydrated, as it were, in my wetsuit?”), but at any rate, he, among the others of the crew, were glad to pull off the suits of neoprene rubber, wondering what the stench would be like. Freed of the suits, we were all too eager to slap some of the sea water scooped up from the ocean waters onto our bodies. Squiddly, meanwhile, was the only one of us who appeared happy. He didn’t wear a wetsuit and was all too eager to go back for more, as soon as he loaded up another reel of film. “See ya in 30 minutes!” the octopus squealed excitedly, diving back in and swimming with a freedom the rest of us couldn’t cherish. As a bulwark against hypothermia, though, we were fine with dressing up just that one time. And thus was initiative more than anything to begin the debriefing over the City of Atlanta wreck, which Mildew Wolf opened by pointing out just how “stunning” it seemed to come face to face with as unlikely an item of history as that. “If we weren’t on such a schedule, we’d visit a lot more wrecks,” Hokey opined. They wished they could, but given the nitrogen buildup, it was best to wait a long time before they went under again. Breezly Bruin, for his part, admitted to a “certain sense of giddiness” at diving to such depths as the City of Atlanta wreck, contrasting such with his own diving experiences alongside Sneezly Seal in the waters of the Bering Sea off Nome: Somewhat bluish-green to the point of turning murky after awhile, chilly almost constantly, and the visibility somewhat limited, if that. Wally, listening attentively to Breezly, chimed in: “Shame I’ve been cooped up in the zoo so long. For a long time, I never quite experienced dives this deep before. As I became an independent ’gator I gained a lot of appreciation of the ocean’s blue bosom.” One could only imagine what Wally could have called the spring vent we witnessed a week or so prior. Loopy’s thoughts: “I have to admit that, back up among the Laurentians in Quebec, I’ve dived in a few lakes just to start the day more than anything while camping. More of a bracer than anything, but even then, some can get to be rather bluish-green after awhile. Depends on when you’ve got the turnover of warmer waters near the bottom such as drive colder surface waters itself to the bottom.” Magilla’s opinion: “I admit, being a gorilla myself kept in a pet shop window for attention’s sake, that it took awhile to find some interest in diving; this was after the surfboard escapade; I assume you remember that one.” And Mildew Wolf: “Pretty amazing how a lake can turn around as Loopy explained it, and yet not stink over a wide area!” Squiddly knew about Magilla’s brief dalliance with surfing; the gorilla had told him about it before with the energy of a ten-year-old on mescaline. However, the octopus was down there, earning his extra pay for the trip by shooting a few other wrecks within proximity. “So, Snag, any thoughts?” I asked, waiting on Squiddly to return. “Heavens to Neptune!” was how he began, in characteristic bombastic style. “And I have to acknowledge there that I was never much into wreck diving to begin with, but for a vessel of such size, as was to be imagined by the lay of the wreck, even allowing for parts of the engine and boilers to be exposed, was I impressed! Stunned, even!” Plenty of rest later, Squiddly returned from the water with plenty of extra footage in tentacle. We then took the boat back to shore and packed the gear into the trailer. One delicious seafood dinner later, we returned to our motel rooms to prepare for our comparatively leisurely dive to the wreck of the Hesperides. It was safe to say that the rest was well-deserved after as much the heartiness of the dinner as the exuberance of the dive into such an interesting wreck, not to mention plenty of the crew imagining what sort of footage, if any, would come out of Squiddly’s dive, and if it was of decent quality. The next morning, following another good breakfast, we piloted the boat carefully out toward the Hesperides, careful to stop so that we didn’t grind against the steering quadrant of the boat. We were very thankful that the weather was good enough for a dive such as this. “Just make sure, Peter,” Snagglepuss—again captain of the dive vessel—remarked, “that you’re able to clearly make out and discern the wreck from the water’s surface. The Diamond Shoals can be unpredictable, and that very unpredictability helped to explain what did the Hesperides in.” I brought the boat to a complete stop. A check of the map showed we weren’t over any part of the wreck; nevertheless, we slowly and carefully dropped anchor and hoisted the flag. And at any rate, gear was checked over and put on, fitted even, in Snagglepuss’ immortal style of phraseology. And who could fail to be impressed at the sheer clarity of the water whence the wreck was situated? Just let it be said that with the Hesperides at a comparatively shallower depth than the City of Atlanta was, who needed wetsuits? Particularly considering how the Hesperides landed where she was and was easily approachable at such depths. Sixty minutes at forty feet, in fact—enough time for us to explore, and there was plenty to see, unlike last time. We all entered in unison and, with the surroundings much brighter, split up once we determined our meetup point. Snagglepuss had been right in that the Hesperides’ downfall was on the shoals. A British steamer, she ran aground on those very shoals on October 9, 1897 while transporting iron ore from the River Plate Ports of Argentina back to England. Unlike our last exploration, the crew was not in any immediate danger, and all 24 of the ship’s men survived—even if took awhile for the life saving crew to come to the Hesperides’ aid owing to heavy fog. But back to the dive: It was nothing but sheer wonder to approach such a wreck in such shallower waters, and especially amazing was how the holds which carried the iron ore had managed to take on a life of their own, with plenty of soft coral having emerged on the surface of the ore hold all this time in spite of the sheer proximity of the colder North Atlantic Stream relative to the warmer Gulf Stream. Of particular focus was the bulkhead, or what remained of it: You couldn’t help but notice where hard and soft corals had accumulated over the years, and managed to thrive all along. I was able to get plenty of terrific shots of coral growing over most of the ship. I was near the bow, taking in some gorgeous light green coral, while Hokey and Wally noticed plenty of sheepsheads congregating near the boilers. What impressed Loopy, Breezly and Mildew in particular was the practically-intact engine, still standing stout and upright, and the portside boilers; corals could also be evident on such ruins. Nearby was what remained of the starboard boiler, which got knocked off its side thanks to tidal action over the years. No more impressive a sight was what remained of the steering section; as with much else of the Hesperides’ remains, corals and other marine growths could be discerned, not to mention plenty of marine life being evident. Sunlight filtering through the emerald-green waters made the perspective even more impressive. Another impressive sight was the vast number of fish around the steering quadrant. Taken as a still photograph, the busy sight of the marine life looked like flotsam from a still-fresh wreck. Here we managed to get a stunning sight of hundreds of small fish congregating close together. But the most impressive of all sights was in the ore holds, which years of coral and concreting growths covered to create a modest reef in its own right, attracting its share of reef fish attracted by such an unlikely junction of ocean currents converging on such a legendary wreck. It may not have been as spectacular as the reefs off the Florida Keys, but it was interesting to sense in its own right. And to sense how a vessel such as the Hesperides, stranded as she was in shoals known to catch the unsuspecting mariner trying to navigate the Gulf Stream as it crosses the North Atlantic such like the Diamond such, actually managed to remain intact in some measure impressed practically everyone in the party, even becoming a sort of mini-aquarium in its own way—especially in what remained of the ore holds! Satisfied with our dive, we returned to the surface after an hour had passed and climbed back onto the boat. Fortunately for us, there were no wetsuits to take off, along with the usual worry of smelling unpleasant. “Gentlemen, I’m sure you’ll agree I had a terrific time,” Hokey grinned, drying off his feet. And what a debriefing ensued about the Hesperides dive back on deck, over plenty of strong coffee come to think of it! What tales could be imagined of the discoveries to have ensued! Until a certain Hardy Har Har brought up the question of what ensued with Squiddly Diddly, who decided to do some discoveries in his own right after the City of Atlanta dive. It was something of a character trait of Hardy’s to be pessimistic, sometimes to the point of anxiety ensuing. “We’re going to pilot the boat over there,” I said in a reassuring tone. Indeed, the octopus took his own boat—a much smaller one—out to where we had been the day before. We arrived to find Squiddly just out of the water, packing up the reels. “Oh, hiya, gang!” was his call. “Didja have fun?” “You’ll say we did!” we cried out as one. To which Hardy Har Har was thinking aloud just how it was possible for Squiddly to have survived underwater all that time, and to produce so much footage of wrecks beyond the City of Atlanta such, no doubt bound to require plenty of editing. Even then, Snagglepuss was bound to know of at least one film processor on shore who could do a decent job on what Squiddly hath wrought. To think that Hardy didn’t consider the fact that Squiddly was an octopus and was born for the water!“I think that’s good enough for this episode,” I said, confident that we had enough footage to make a riveting episode. “We should head back to shore and get some rest. All of us.” Even as we imagined what sort of footage ensued of Squiddly’s discoveries, and how it would all turn out in the end.Anyway, we hope you enjoyed our tale of two wrecks, as well as the company of our friend Snagglepuss. Remember, if you are interested in the exciting world of scuba diving, please seek out proper instruction from a professional, and never dive alone. In our next episode of this series, we travel east of the Chesapeake Bay to explore one of the Eastern U.S.’s top beach destinations: Ocean City, Maryland. Until then, happy diving.

“This is quite a ways to for for some rupees, my friend.” Sidon steps over the trunk of the fallen tree, following close behind the blonde hero. “You know, I could always loan you whatever amount you required, it would be no trouble.”
Link pushes a branch aside allowing the Zora to pass through with ease. “Fun this way,” He signs once his hands are free.“You have a very interesting definition of fun.” The Prince chuckles watching as Link shrugs then scurries ahead once again. He seems rather eager to get to whatever mystery destination they are heading for.
Never had Sidon ventured so deep into this section of the forest so he was rather unfamiliar with the terrain. However, his small guide knew exactly where they were heading, making the Zora wonder how often he came through the area. Surely the Champion of Hyrule did not need to seek out money that often.
Further and further they move into the trees the sound of rushing water growing ever clearer until they finally came upon an opening. A clearing where a small waterfall cascades into a lake of dazzlingly clear waters. The outer edge of the crisp green grass has colorful flowers sprouting, curling in different directions, leaves seeking out the sunlight shining down from above. Sidon found himself looking around in awe seeing the small spot of respite hidden amongst the many layers of bark and foliage. It was a marvelous sight to witness, but what could it possibly have to do with the Hero’s money troubles.
Link approaches the bank of the lake setting down the satchel that he had been carrying the entire journey here. The prince had tried to ask what the bag contains but the only answer he got was a sly grin and a, “You’ll see.”
It was probably best to leave it be, though that didn’t stop him from being curious. As Link is opening it and setting the contents upon the ground, Sidon couldn’t help but lean over the Hylian for a peek. His friend caught him, however, and waves his hands shooing him back.
“Your secrecy is beginning to worry me, my friend, should I be concerned?” Sidon chuckles but still he obeys and stands further back. Link shrugs with a smile then opens his pack and continues arranging the items on the grass one-by-one.
First comes a piece of jewelry he must have picked up from Gerudo Town given the ruse of such exquisite gold and sapphires. Then comes a small pouch that which the blonde hero opens and proceeds to dump a bunch of shimmering seashells from. A jar follows shortly after, glowing from the light of the two fairies floating around inside. A wooden carving of a bear, a horse, and a wolf comes next - the biggest being just a little bigger than the hero’s hand. Finally, he reveals an animal skull with sharp teeth likely from either a small wolf or some kind of large fox. It was a very odd array of items but easy to collect if you knew where to find them; for someone who travels the land on a daily basis finding so many trinkets and souvenirs it must not have taken long at all.
With his collection now laid out on the grass he tosses the empty bag to the side then gave a sharp whistle. Sidon almost didn’t catch what emerged from the water, his eyes still studying the collection. But the lake gave away with a brief splash and suddenly there was a person leaning over the bank. They were drenched from head to toe, the water making their wet hair cling to their body. They wore very little clothing, made of a shimmering, glossy fabric; bracelets, rings, and necklaces of different metals and gems tossed on with not much care for a uniform appearance.
“Link! Did you bring me more treasure?” Their eyes fall upon the items before Link can even answer. They light up and raise the jar off the ground, pressing their nose to the glass, observing the fairies inside. “Pretty. So these are fairies, I love them!” Link sits while the beautiful stranger bounces back and forth between each item. “More pretty shells! Ooh this one has a little friend inside! A skull?! Those are sharp teeth, scary!”
Their energy seems boundless and every new thing encouraged another chipper reaction, it was like they’d never seen any of these items before yet they knew them by name. To them it was like Link had brought them a collection of wonders and miracles; ones that had to be cherished.
“Hello stranger! What are you?” Sidon blinks when his eyes met the mystified person now gazing at him with the same glimmer of wonder. Though the odd question is what really took the prince off guard.
He glances at the blonde hero who was smiling just a tad bit wider as he gestures for Sidon to come closer. “I hope you will pardon my presence, my dear friend Linked invited me to accompany him. I am Sidon, Prince of the Zora.”
In amazement, they coo, “Wow, I’ve never met a Zora before, Let alone a prince! Can I touch your scales?”
Sidon smiles finding the abrupt innocence rather sweet. He gladly kneels muttering a quiet expression of gratitude to Link who moved his items aside to make room for the Prince. “Have you really never met a Zora before?” He asks offering a hand out and they quickly takes hold pulling him forward.
Shaking their head they curiously run their hands over the rough red scales and the softer underside with absolute marvel. “Nope. I don’t get lots of visitors aside from Link. Ooh, these ones are rougher than mine!”
Blinking puzzled, Sidon turned his hand at their guidance. “Forgive me, but do you also possess scales?”
“Well, of course, I’m a mermaid after all. Oh pointy!” They looked up at Sidon’s mouth where his sharp and pristine teeth were prominent. A jingling sound distracts the supposed mermaid and she hurriedly looks toward the jar with a small whine. “Ah Link, the fairies must be getting cramped. I’ll buy them, I’m sure they’ll like all the flowers you brought me!” Pulling away from Sidon they turn and dive into the water. And it was the Zora’s turn to be in awe when a tail, like that of a fish vividly colored scales glimmering in the light of the sun.
The Zora quickly turns to his companion for his reaction, but Link is completely unfazed by the display. In fact, he seems to be smirking rather smugly at the Zora’s surprise and it occurs to Sidon that Link did not come here for rupees.
