T.-R. Enderby, vice-président, de Montréal; R.-A. Carter, secrétaire-trésorier; le capitaine H-I. Beauvals, le capitaine Léon Beaupré, J.-D. Calvin, P. Godin, fils; T. Siegerman, E. Spence et le capitaine T-W. Tinmouth, tous de Montréal. MM. A.-B. Buckworth et le capitaine James-B. Foote, de Toronto: le capitaine Scott Misener, de Port Colborne: J-J. Boland, E.-S.

So I go to the dentist and the appointment I had was not the appointment that I thought I was going to have (normal maintenance vs deep clean) so i warned the dentist "hey heads up I burn through dental anesthetics super quick and also I'd like to use as little as possible because putting the dental anesthetics in my body is the most painful part of the process unless I'm having a root canal or something" and she's like "Hmm. Okay. Is it just the injection site?" and I was like "no, it will feel like burning on the opposite side of my face and in my nose and eyes and stuff." And she was like "Hmm. Do you turn really red when this happens?" And I was like "I don't know, I can't really see myself when it happens." And she was like "are you willing to experiment with this a little?" And I was like "sure, no worries" and she injected me with one anesthetic and it hurt like a motherfucker and she and the assistant both went "OOOH" and she was like "Yeah you got really red right away let's try the other," and it was the same thing and then she was like "okay I think this is the one that will work" and it hurt a little bit but it was fucking NOTHING compared to the comprehensive full stabbing burning facial pain from the others and long story short the dentist was like "You're reacting to the epinephrine in these other anesthetics," which I guess is fairly common for people who have autoimmune disorders.
So I guess this is to say: If you get spreading, burning, stabbing pain when you are being injected with local anesthetics it's not supposed to do that and you should say something.

"In China, a landscape architect is reimagining cities across the vast country by working with nature to combat flooding through the ‘sponge city’ concept.
Through his architecture firm Turenscape, Yu has created hundreds of projects in dozens of cities using native plants, dirt, and clever planning to absorb excess rainwater and channel it away from densely populated areas.
Flooding, especially in the two Chinese heartlands of the commercial south and the agricultural north, is becoming increasingly common, but Yu says that concrete and pipe solutions can only go so far. They’re inflexible, expensive, and require constant maintenance. According to a 2021 World Bank report, 641 of China’s 654 largest cities face regular flooding.
“There’s a misconception that if we can build a flood wall higher and higher, or if we build the dams higher and stronger, we can protect a city from flooding,” Yu told CNN in a video call. “(We think) we can control the water… that is a mistake.”
Tumblr media
Pictured: The Benjakitti Forest Park in Bangkok
Yu has been called the “Chinese Olmstead” referring to Frederick Law Olmstead, the designer of NYC’s Central Park. He grew up in a little farming village of 500 people in Zhejiang Province, where 36 weirs channel the waters of a creek across terraced rice paddies.
Once a year, carp would migrate upstream and Yu always looked forward to seeing them leap over the weirs.
This synthesis of man and nature is something that Turenscape projects encapsulate. These include The Nanchang Fish Tail Park, in China’s Jiangxi province, Red Ribbon Park in Qinghuandao, Hebei province, the Sanya Mangrove Park in China’s island province of Hainan, and almost a thousand others. In all cases, Yu utilizes native plants that don’t need any care to develop extremely spongey ground that absorbs excess rainfall.
Tumblr media
Pictured: The Dong’an Wetland Park, another Turescape project in Sanya.
He often builds sponge projects on top of polluted or abandoned areas, giving his work an aspect of reclamation. The Nanchang Fish Tail Park for example was built across a 124-acre polluted former fish farm and coal ash dump site. Small islands with dawn redwoods and two types of cypress attract local wildlife to the metropolis of 6 million people.
Sanya Mangrove Park was built over an old concrete sea wall, a barren fish farm, and a nearby brownfield site to create a ‘living’ sea wall.
One hectare (2.47 acres) of Turenscape sponge land can naturally clean 800 tons of polluted water to the point that it is safe enough to swim in, and as a result, many of the sponge projects have become extremely popular with locals.
One of the reasons Yu likes these ideas over grand infrastructure projects is that they are flexible and can be deployed as needed to specific areas, creating a web of rain sponges. If a large drainage, dam, seawall, or canal is built in the wrong place, it represents a huge waste of time and money.
Tumblr media
Pictured: A walkway leads visitors through the Nanchang Fish Tail Park.
The sponge city projects in Wuhan created by Turenscape and others cost in total around half a billion dollars less than proposed concrete ideas. Now there are over 300 sponge projects in Wuhan, including urban gardens, parks, and green spaces, all of which divert water into artificial lakes and ponds or capture it in soil which is then released more slowly into the sewer system.
Last year, The Cultural Landscape Foundation awarded Yu the $100,000 Oberlander Prize for elevating the role of design in the process of creating nature-based solutions for the public’s enjoyment and benefit."

What do you mean, "I am overdressed for the beach"?
Today's little local history lesson that you won't find on any of the Village des écluses or Pointe-des-Cascades websites:
From 1900 to 1959, the Soulanges canal was where most boats would pass through to navigate the Saint-Laurent river in the area South-West of Montreal. At Pointe-des-Cascades, right next to the canal, there was an industrial site where all the maintenance materials for the canal were being built and stored, but when the canal closed in 1959, that site was left abandoned. In 1986, the site got revived, and the industrial buildings were repurposed as a summer theatre, restaurant and boutiques, and the riverside, as a small beach. However, the site was abandoned once again in the late 2010s, only to be picked up again by a new team wanting to restore the 80s resort it once was.
So, how is my 1980's does 1910's nautical outfit? I have also added a picture of my brother and I on that day, two pictures at Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue at sunset (with my sister and a different hat) and a picture of the abandoned "Hotel" (which was never a hotel) at Village des écluses, taken in April, on my Instagram post.
Outfit rundown Skirt: vintage Pink House Top: old Axes Femme Hat: vintage Shoes: old Queen Bee Parasol/umbrella (served both purposes that day): Alice and the Pirates Navy cat stamp brooch: Via Carousel All other jewellery: vintage

shoutout to disabled people who are too sick to take care of their teeth. here's to you if you have to get frequent fillings, root canals, teeth extracted, implants, or dentures because taking care of your teeth is to difficult or impossible with your disabilities. here's to you if you forget to brush, can't afford tooth brushes, toothpaste, mouth wash, etc., if you are or have been homeless and struggled to access dental care, if you're too poor or don't have insurance to see the dentist, if you dissociate, if you are psychotic and don't trust dentists, if your chronic fatigue prevents you from daily maintenance, or whatever it is that holds you back, shoutout to you.
dental care is a nightmare to keep up with given the amount of sugars, acids and harmful additives that are put into just about everything in our modern diet. many of the sugars and acids alone damage our teeth in substantial ways that are difficult to keep up with even if you are abled, let alone the cost, time and transportation it takes to get access to dentistry. if you have to get teeth extracted or replaced, you are not failing. that is also part of your care. you are still doing your best.

Is it true that Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton have an uneasy relationship?
I'm sure everything has mellowed over the years since Clinton left office, but they absolutely had a frosty relationship. They had issues dating back to when Clinton was Governor of Arkansas and Carter was still the incumbent President and they seemed to pick up where they left off once Clinton was in the White House.
In fact, there was tension between Carter and his four immediate successors (Reagan, Bush 41, Clinton, and Bush 43). While most former Presidents of the post-World War II era have largely avoided criticizing the incumbent Presidents, Carter was often very candid about certain policy or political issues after leaving office. Carter's work around the globe with the Carter Center was also sometimes seen as influencing or interfering with White House initiatives or events for several different Administrations.
As Jonathan Alter wrote in his excellent 2020 biography of Carter, His Very Best: Jimmy Carter, A Life (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO):
Carter traveled to more than 140 countries after leaving office -- returning to several of them more than a dozen times -- and he said he always kept the State Department apprised of his trips. But the notifications were often pro forma, as if he merely had to check a box before going off on his own. It was no secret that Carter was not a member in good standing of the ex-Presidents' club, in part because he never accepted their code. The unwritten rules aren't complicated: former Presidents are expected to build their libraries and at least try to hold their tongues about the incumbent, not complain -- as Carter often did -- that the policy is wrong or they are underused by the President. No one sitting in the Oval Office likes the idea of a freelance Secretary of State. At the same time, five of the six Presidents who succeeded Carter (all except Reagan) recognized the usefulness of his vast knowledge and high-level contacts. The challenge for them was managing their high-maintenance predecessor. When Carter was President, he took care to cultivate relationships with his living predecessors -- Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford -- and he welcomed their support on China, the Panama Canal, and other issues. After leaving office, he got along exceptionally well with Ford, who joined him on several post-Presidential projects. Ford and Carter promised that each would deliver the eulogy if the other died first. Ford did, and Carter remembered him warmly at his funeral in 2006. George H.W. Bush believed the Ford-Carter bond "set a wonderful example of cooperation and friendship" between old rivals. Carter's successors were a different matter. He said he had "okay relations" with the Bushes -- especially George H.W. Bush -- and Donald Trump in his first two years. It was the Democratic Presidents, Clinton and Obama, whom he found "cooler and more aloof." No one who watched their interactions over the years would be left to wonder why.
Regarding that relationship between Carter and Clinton, Alter also wrote:
During the 1992 Presidential campaign, the tensions between Carter and Bill Clinton of a dozen years earlier resurfaced. "People are looking for somebody who is honest and tells the truth," Carter said in a remark that took on added meaning because it came amid the first national stories of Governor Clinton lying about sex. Clinton, for his part, worried that Carter's failures as President would rub off on another southern governor and hurt his chances. After the election, Clinton wouldn't take Carter's calls. He finally handed him off to Warren Christopher, his transition director and choice for Secretary of State. "Chris" quickly grew tired of Carter, too, and fobbed him off on his undersecretary, Peter Tarnoff. Carter felt snubbed. Clinton's basic problem with Carter was that he too often crossed the line from expressing his views on a subject to saying the President "should" do something. Carter admitted later that while he didn't intend to be personally critical, "I may not always have succeeded.".... ....As Carter moved around the world, the Clinton White House had no confidence that he would limit himself to his assigned mission without making concessions that the President never approved. The White House knew that Carter understood that recalling a former chief executive like some errant ambassador was difficult if not impossible, which meant that he could hog glory and operate outside the President's control. This happened twice in 1994 [in North Korea and Haiti], a year that was simultaneously the peak of Carter's success as a peacemaker and the nadir of his forty-year relationship with Clinton.

Ch210, Where is F. O. L. Orphanage?
⚠️ long post ⚠️
I was discussing that question with @juxl25, and I think we came up with a good choice for its location.
The only information we know for sure is that it's in Norfolk, and that it's near a river. We also know Finny and Snake took a train to a nearby town and walked to the orphanage.
We also know there's a wind pump that drains water from the surrounding marshland. There are at least four major rivers in the area used for draining the marshes: Yare, Bure, Wensum, and Ouse.
Juxl25 suggested River Yare and the historic Red Mill (the wind pump) as the area but was looking at Manor House, which is farther away, in the village (proper) of Haddiscoe, Norfolk. After some digging around, I agree with River Yare and Red Mill/Langley Detached mill (originally called Langley detached windpump...
Tumblr media
...or Langley Detached drainage pump).
Tumblr media
They are in an area northeast of Haddiscoe village, called Haddiscoe Island (these days), thanks to a canal added to connect River Yare and River Waveney farther inland, creating an island of the area and making the marshland there more remote/less accessible.
Tumblr media
There's a historic farmhouse just east of River Yare, not far from Red Mill, called Raven Hall. And Raven Hall would be a premium location to have a secluded facility like F. O. L. Orphanage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's only one thing I don't like about the buildings shown for Raven Hall -- it's a bit farther from the drainage pump than I want it to be, and it's just a large farmhouse (almost 3000 sqft) and a long barn (almost 900 sqft). But there's a cool space just south of those buildings, which would be ideal for the main orphanage, as well as a spot for the stables/barn leading closer to the drainage pump, farther south. Here are two options for the placement of F. O. L.:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In each case, I've placed the stables to the west of the main house, as a small red rectangle (more or less), while the windpump was already marked by a red dot farther southwest. Looking at the bend of the river on Theo's image of a map of the place, the placement on the right (above) might be the better match. Then again, it could be exactly where Raven Hall is located. And Raven Hall, having been built in the 17th century (or at least 1700), is older than Red Mill (built in 1840).
Tumblr media
Too bad I can't see the placement of the windpump on his map, but I think it's somewhere behind the speech bubbles on the left side of the panel.
We see that the windpump at the orphanage has a low roof of some kind, and juxl25 explains that someone was probably living onsite just to maintain it full time. I did find at least one pic showing Red Mill with what could be the old maintenance shed/shelter, but it seemed to be on the wrong side. Who knows? I guess it depends on which way the sails are facing to catch the wind? But the low roof in the panel is probably just the top of some shed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh, and near St Olaves, there's a train station called Haddiscoe Station. They could have got off the train there and made their way north to the orphanage by foot. Or did they hitch a ride part of the way? I'll have to go back and check.
I'm still considering one other location, not far from there, but I won't post it unless further research looks more promising.
Hey... can you imagine if all this time... F. O. L. was just some place name reference... like "Farmhouse on Langley" (Marshes)?!?
Please let these kids break the windpump and flood the tunnels.... 🙏

September 2nd 1834 saw the death of Sir Thomas Telford, the pioneering engineer, road, bridge and canal builder.
Telford was the Scotsman who laid the foundations of industrial Britain, the Colossus of Roads, the godfather of civil engineering, Thomas Telford even had a town named after him, albeit an English one!
Born at Glendinning, Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, on 9 August 1757, Thomas Telford never knew his shepherd father. He dies four months after the boy is born. His single mother can’t afford to raise him so relatives do. But such is Thomas’s vitality that he’s soon known as ‘Laughing Tam’.
Thomas leaves school and aged 14, he apprentices to a stonemason. He helps build new roads and a farmhouse on the estate of a local duke. Despite the nature of his day job, with its intensive long hours, Thomas studies at night to learn all there is about construction. By 25, he’s worked in Edinburgh and is off to London. He meets with two Scottish architects, one of whom, Sir William Chambers is building Somerset House. Telford secures work there.
And so began his long career seeing him build everything from canals to bridges, roads to harbours, Thomas Telford – the first President of the Institution of Civil Engineers – worked or advised on hundreds of important civil engineering projects in his lifetime .His expertise was so renowned that people from all over the world – including the Swedish and Russian governments – consulted him for their major civil engineering projects.
Telford’s most famous canal works include the 60-mile Caledonian Canal (1804-1822) and Ellesmere Canal.
In the Highlands of Scotland, Telford was responsible or about 1,200 miles of new or improved roads.
His main achievements in road-making were the London to Holyhead and Bangor to Chester roads. The road in North Wales has been designated a ‘Historic Route’.
Bridges also played a large part in Telford’s career, with the Menai wrought iron suspension bridge over the Menai Straits in Wales being one of his most famous designs. With an unprecedented span of nearly 580ft, it was considered the most outstanding bridge development of the early 19th century.
In 1783, he first started working for William Pulteney, the first Earl of Bath and MP for Shrewsbury, restoring Sudborough Rectory in Northamptonshire.
Pulteney was a strong influence on Telford’s career, and helped establish him as an engineer.
Telford worked on a number of infrastructure projects in Shropshire after being invited there by Pulteney to restore Shrewsbury Castle in 1786.
He worked on local church restorations, private houses, improved streets and drainage.
After he restored the castle in a Gothic style, Telford lived in and practised as an architect from the castle.
When Pulteney became director of British Fisheries Society in 1790, Telford advised on the improvement of numerous harbours in northern Scotland. The largest was Pulteneytown at Wick.
He also helped spread the use of Roman cement in facing, pointing and brick-jointing mortars to stop water penetration.
The aluminous hydraulic cement, patented by James Parker, set to a “very considerable extent” in about 20 minutes.
Telford’s civil engineering career started to take off from 1793 when he was appointed as general agent, surveyor, engineer, architect and overlooker to the Ellesmere Canal. The standout structure on the canal is the Pontcysyllte cast iron aqueduct over the Dee.
In terms of road construction, Telford’s roads were well-drained and had a hand-pitched stone foundation under a layer of conventional road metal.
Although they were more expensive to build, their higher quality meant that maintenance costs were lower.
Telford planned, built or advised on several thousand masonry bridges throughout his lifetime.
His first major bridge was over the Severn at Montford from 1790 to 1792, using convict labour.
Other infrastructure Telford worked on included drainage of the Fens in eastern England, the improvement of more than 100 harbours, docks or piers, and water supply schemes such as a piped supply to Liverpool from springs at Bootle.
Telford was invited by the King of Sweden to be the consulting engineer for the Trollhatte Canal’s eastwards extension to the Baltic at Soderkoping.
He was also consulted by the Russian government, and North American canal schemes.
For his achievements in civil engineering, Telford has been dubbed the ‘Colossus of Roads’ and ‘Pontifex Maximus’.
A liver problem, referred to as a “bilious derangement”, caused his death on this day 1834. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.

So I need to move and an interesting opportunity has presented itself; a beautifully finished and generously sized houseboat. I've been doing some reading, and know to expect maintenance costs and mooring costs (with council tax if I stay in the same place) but as you lived on a boat once I wanted to ask a specific question for the sake of my pets. How hard is it to keep the boat warm in the winter and cool in the summer? Too warm is less of a problem but one of my cats doesn't tolerate heat well. Too cold is scary because I've got a lot of little eight legged fuzzy friends who won't appreciate that. Also if you have any words of wisdom please don't hesitate to share. I've not committed in anyway yet; I'm just in the stage of researching and considering. But I have to admit being a moveable animal exhibit sounds really appealing; I've been really wanting to do some outreach and scicom with my tarantulas and this seems like a potential opportunity to do so.
Tumblr media
A winter's scene in the cabin of my boat, Eve, on the canal in Wiltshire. The stove's going, the firewood's piled high, and there's whiskey and poetry. "It must be cold in the winter" say people who couldn't really be more wrong!
Artist Dru Marland, on the listing of this holiday card
People always ask/assume this, to the point where old boaters aren’t polite about answering any more. However, a well-insulated narrow steel tube with a multifuel stove in it is extremely easy to warm up. They are also very easy to air out, or cool down: you open a window on either side.
Sometimes you might wake up to ice on the inside of the windows, but the trick is to learn how to bank a stove overnight, which is quickly learned and a good life skill to have.
Our boat actually had an Eberspacher, a magnificently rare and antiquated form of central heating for vehicles that ran on diesel and made a tremendous fuss of it. You do not need an Eberspacher, but if your prospective boat has one, it is a very fun way to answer the question. “Doesn’t it get VERY cold in winter?” And you look blank and say reproachfully, “she has central heating…”
As for whether the boat you want has good insulation - try to visit it and see if it feels cold/damp. The listing or the owner should be able to describe the insulation. sprayfoam insulation is best, and if you see that you can be fairly confident.
Windows can get cold, but depending on what you have, there will be different treatments. Round porthole windows are usually fitted with round pillow things that you stick in, blinds can be made with thermal linings, and so on.
In general, the climate of a well-fitted boat is easier to control than a house. but you’re welcome to message me privately with the listing if you have more questions.

Here you go! Sorry it took so long.
Enjoy!
Eduardo, who stood up
Since Edward spends so much time on the tracks, Soder Locomotives is pleased to offer track maintenance services in Fat Bay. He knows everything, everyone does it. The next day Edward came on board. Some large tumors require removal. Gordon and Thomas were there. Tomasz was surprised. A new crane has arrived on the island. “You are so strong. I know Gordon can handle you.” Gordon thinks this is crazy and Thomas immediately leaves. "The valve is great, but I wouldn't buy another one if I didn't have a car." Edward looked at his hands. Gordon was right. "I wasn't very happy." "You look like Edward." He soon arrived in Persia. I also hope for a new China. "It doesn't help much." "He's coming." "Open a new tab. Gordon, he and I fight and fight." "Edward, is something wrong?" "Percy is still young. She is young and delicate." Edward's car is parked next to the new crane. "My name is Loki." "My name is Edward." “Can you come with me? Can you help me with this long pipe?” "I don't need your help anymore, idiot." The material was removed and dried. Edward walked up to the sign. Loki recalled in his mind. The screen immediately went black. Edward stopped the car, but the windshield was damaged. A metal pipe can be seen in the background. "My key is broken." I saw a large canal. I was wondering what I should do. “Rocky has a lot of energy.” said Thomas. "Open a new tab." He tells the sergeant to call Harvey. Harvey said with a smile. Harvey started using the hose, but he worked hard. Only 1v1. "Incredible." Thomas and Emily will arrive soon. He found his way. “Let's go. Why don't you stay with Rocky?” Hannah: "Hey, Harvey, calm down." "I'm a failure, I have to do something good." Then he heard Gordon's voice. I stood up immediately. Then there's the question. Gordon kicks him in the head. They got off the plane. I was frightened. "I've been looking for Gordon for a long time." “We need Edward Logie.” Gordon hit him hard. "Open a new tab." But Edward couldn't fix Harvey Gordon because he knew he was in trouble. There is only one there. "I met Loki." Run fast. Edward comes on board. "Loki, I need your help." "I'm sorry, Edward." So Edward takes Rocky to the store. "Sure," Edward said. Edward leads Rocky through the hills and valleys. Everyone was crying and laughing. Edward introduces the new recruits to Sodor. Edward meets Rocky. "I can fix it." Rocky uses heavy equipment to get Gordon out of the van. Gordon was stunned. “Thank you, Loki. Thank you!" Rocky lost all his cigarettes in the pub. The work was completed quickly. Gordon and Edward were stunned. "It's crazy to think you sent me. You may be young, but it matters." That's why everyone knew and respected Rocky.

I haven't rly seen a lot of ppl on here talk about the Ben Gurion Canal project + its relevance to what's going on in Palestine/Israel rn so I wrote something up abt it
The Ben Gurion Canal project is a proposed canal through occupied Palestine, named after Israel's first Prime Minister. It would connect the Red Sea (the Gulf of Aqaba, more specifically) to the Mediterranean Sea. Currently, the only canal connecting the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea is the Suez Canal.
Without the Suez Canal, trade ships would have to circle around the entirety of Africa, which is expensive and inefficient. The proposed Ben Gurion Canal would rival the Suez Canal that runs through Egypt. As of the financial year June 30, 2023, Egypt grossed over 9 billion dollars USD annually from the Suez Canal alone.
Historically, the canal was supposed to be accessible to all nations however after the Nakba (mass displacement and massacre of Palestinians in 1948) the Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser shut down the canal and shortly thereafter strategically nationalized the canal so the UK, US, France, etc. no longer held shares and profited off the commissary companies that were running Suez Canal operations. Although the canal is currently accessible due to a Peace Treaty (Camp David 1978), the Suez Canal has long been a source of tension.
The proposed Ben Gurion Canal project currently runs north of Gaza, however the current proposal requires a detour that could be made significantly more efficient if Israel gains control over the Gaza Strip, specifically the northern portion. Do you think it's a coincidence that the Israeli regime is bombing the northern Gaza strip more heavily than the south? I don't, and it's precisely why I think talking about this proposed canal is important - it puts into context the strategic measures Israel is implementing to carry out this genocide.
The Ben Gurion Canal project has many advantages over the Suez Canal - because of its rocky terrain, it can be built larger and deeper than the Suez Canal and would require significantly less maintenance. The larger size of the Ben Gurion canal would also mean that the US could deploy larger modern warships, which is currently impossible as the Suez Canal is too narrow. The Ben Gurion Canal would be projected to gross around 6 billion USD annually, which is significant from both a financial + regional control standpoint.
So ya, while the canal is not the only reason for the current war, thousands of Palestinian lives are being martyred so the West can gain military and financial control in the Middle East + build this canal as efficiently as possible.
