May 8 | Prompt: Hobby
“You look horrendous.”
Sherlock’s words thrash Greg’s daze, and he turns to the detective to make sure he heard correctly. “What?”
“I said you look horrendous,” Sherlock repeats, eyes not leaving his device.
Greg holds a scowl, his eyes flickering down to the floor. “Yeah, thanks for that.”
It’s odd that Sherlock would even mention anything other than the case they are currently glued to. They are about to question the suspect that is being brought by other enforcers. In the mean time, Sherlock and Greg have slipped into a peaceful silence in two uncomfortable chairs just outside in the hall. Only now it’s not so peaceful and Sherlock has brought that upon them through insults.
“What I’m trying to make you understand is that you obviously haven’t slept properly in the past week,” Sherlock observes. “When you and your wife were together, that was never an issue.”
Greg has to refrain from rolling his eyes. “Mm.”
“Sherlock,” John hisses as he comes toward them with two coffee cups. “You can’t just say that out of nowhere.”
“Oh, please, John. You were informing me of that viewpoint just last night,” Sherlock says.
Greg’s jaw drops open as he looks between the two men, Sherlock impassive and John embarrassed. “Oh, I see how it is, then!” he says, crossing his arms. “You two just want to have a laugh so you decide to think of ways to gossip.”
“No, Greg. That’s not what this is,” John argues calmly, sending a glare to Sherlock which he ignores. He hands the coffee to Greg, and Greg’s about to deny it in stubbornness before he gets a whiff of the warm goodness. Instead of turning his nose up at it, he takes it, mumbling a ‘thank you’ in the process. “I was only saying that you seemed off, mate,” continues John. “You’ve been digging yourself in cases and that isn’t like you. We’re just worried, is all.”
Greg sighs, his tenseness dissipating. “I know. I’m sorry for snapping, it’s just—”
“It’s fine,” says John, taking a seat next to him. “But…you know, my suggestion is that you find an activity you enjoy or something. Get your mind off work for a while.”
“I second that,” Donovan pipes up when walking towards them. “You look awful, Greg.”
“Yes, thank you,” Greg grits out.
“When you feel up to it, get home, look on the internet,” Donovan instructs. “Trust me, I’m sure you can find a hobby, no matter how weird.”
And Greg does just that. After the case, he heads to his flat and takes a long nap, it nearing 5AM. Once he’s woken up and somewhat refreshed, he scrolls on his laptop.
The first suggestion that pops up is gardening. He could do that.
He sets up a little string of seeds in a row of dirt just outside his balcony. He had asked the man at the shop which seeds he recommended, and the kind man sent him off with various different seeds.
“I’ll name you Toby,” Greg says as he plants a seed he doesn’t know the name of. This should be simple enough.
The plants are short lived when Greg buys a hose and puts it at the wrong setting when watering the plants. It’s at the highest setting and when he turns it on, the weight of the water knocks the wooden bucket of plants off, sending them flying down his balcony. He winces when he hears them crash on a car below, the vehicle honking. Greg rushes inside, trying to ignore the loud cursing that the owner of the vehicle provides.
“How about knitting?” Molly suggests a few days later. “Always calms me.”
“Okay,” Greg considers. “I’ll knit something for you.”
Molly smiles shyly. “I’d love that.”
That activity is short lived as well. Greg can’t hold his frustration for one moment as he constantly pokes himself, gets lost with the tutorial on YouTube, and all in all, the supposed sweater turns out to be a bundle of false direction.
Greg puts the attempted knitting project on the counter in front of Molly.
Molly smiles in pity. “It’s a start.”
“No, it’s shit.” Greg sighs, wishing he could glare at himself. “Sorry.”
“It’s alright,” says Molly. “How about you find something a little more simple? Something that doesn’t require a set of rules.”
Donovan suggests a hiking trail outside of London. Greg can do that. He can absolutely do that.
“Fuck!” Greg curses when tripping on another long set of weeds. A family passes him, sending him horrified expressions. Greg huffs, sweat dripping down his back. “Yeah, why don’t you take a picture while you’re at it.”
He doesn’t know how Donovan recommended this with such ease, as if it’s the simplest activity in the world. So far, Greg has received numerous scars on his ankles due to sharp ends of rocks and vines, he’s cursed every minute he’s walked (he’s sure he will get kicked out of the park soon), and dizziness from the heat has taken over.
Once back home, he flops on his bed, rolling himself up in blankets. He’s not good at anything. Nothing is for him. Greg shouldn’t be surprised, but he is. Either he’s shit at all hobbies or he’s meant to suffer as a workaholic.
A week later, his neighbor, Mrs. Sue, knocks on his door. When Greg opens it, she’s holding a grey kitten with bright yellow eyes in her hands. Mrs. Sue sneezes several times, putting on a smile.
“Hi, Greg,” she says a bit timidly, her nose noticeably stuffed. “Uh—well, my sister left me with this and I was wondering if you could sit her for a day, only a day. I need to find some place where they will accept cats because I’m quite allergic.”
“Oh,” Greg says. “I mean—yes, of course. I suppose I could sit for a day. What’s her name?”
“Luna,” Mrs. Sue informs, already handing him the cat. “I’ll be back in the afternoon.”
When she leaves, Greg shuts the door and puts the loudly purring cat down. She rubs against his leg, looking up at him with innocent eyes.
“Well, aren’t you just a cutie,” Greg comments. “C’mon. I’m sure I have some milk. Cats like milk, right?”
The whole day, Luna is nothing but attached to him. When Greg sits, she settles herself on his lap. When Greg does his light workout routine on the floor, she’s under him when he does push ups and on top of him when doing sit-ups. Greg can’t help but laugh. Even after he’s taken a shower, she’s waiting patiently outside the door, looking up at him expectantly.
Afternoon hits and the doorbell rings. Disappointment admittedly looms through Greg, especially when he looks down to see Luna sleeping soundly against his leg.
He opens the door and Mrs. She is holding a box. “Thank you so much, Greg,” she says. “I can take her now. I found a place.”
Greg blinks, and he’s considering giving her back to Mrs. Sue. Maybe it’s for the best.
But when Luna looks up at him with her big yellow eyes, Greg can’t resist.
“Erm…actually,” he starts. “I wouldn’t—y’know, mind keepin’ her.”
Mrs. Sue’s eyes widen in surprise. “Really?”
“Yeah, I mean,” Greg shrugs, “she’s a sweetheart. I would be happy to, actually.”
Mrs. Sue signs in relief. “Thank god. I didn’t even know if the place I visited would have accepted her.” She smiles. “This works out perfectly, Greg, thank you.”
Once she’s gone, Greg sits on his chair and pats his leg. Luna hops up and begins to purr against his chest. “Guess this worked out just fine, hm?” he says as he scratches behind her ear.
Though it isn’t classified as a hobby, Greg finally finds something that keeps him busy and content. Though Luna’s constant mewing and purring can be annoying at times, Greg is delighted to have another pair of soft footsteps on the floorboard. He’s happy to have some noise other than himself in the once quiet space. He’s glad to have something to come home to, something to look forward to.
——
Thanks for reading! I know I haven’t been following with the prompts, but I’m sick at home and actually have some time to write so I thought I’d do this prompt today lol.
Greg is one of my absolute favorite characters and I love, love, love writing him. I stand by that he’s both an impatient and patient man, but that’s okay! He finally found something that makes him happy.
Prompt by @calaisreno Thank you for making this a tradition of sorts. I loved writing this!

What an alien visitor to our planet would deduce about our culture from watching our movies:
1. All police investigations require visiting a strip club at least once.
2. Most dogs are immortal.
3. If being chased through town, you can usually take cover in a passing St. Patrick's Day parade - at any time of the year.
4. Couples who have just had sex will still modestly cover themselves when getting out of bed.
5. All grocery shopping bags contain at least one baguette of French Bread.
6. Anyone can land an plane perfectly providing there is someone in the control tower to give instructions and all control towers have such people.
7. Once applied, lipstick will never rub off - even while scuba diving
8. The ventilation system of any building is the perfect hiding place. It’s always large enough to crawl through, but no one will ever think of looking for you in there.
9. People who have never used a handgun before can handle it perfectly with one hand and the recoil won’t be a problem.
10. You're very likely to survive any battle in any war unless you make the mistake of showing someone a picture of your sweetheart back home.
11. Should you wish to pass yourself off as a German officer, it will not be necessary to speak the language. Even a bad German accent will do.
12. If your town is threatened by an imminent natural disaster or killer beast, the mayor's first concern will be the town’s reputation.
13. The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window in Paris.
14. A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds.
15. When paying for a taxi, nobody even looks at the amount, or at what they’re pulling from their wallet, and it’s always enough to include the fare and a generous tip.
16. Interbreeding is genetically possible with any creature from elsewhere in the universe.
17. Kitchens don't have light switches. When entering a kitchen at night, you should open the fridge door and use that light instead.
18. Women staying in a haunted house will always get up to investigate strange noises in their most revealing nightwear.
19. Mothers routinely cook eggs, bacon, and waffles for their family every morning even though they know nobody ever has time to eat it.
20. Cars that crash will almost always burst into flames.
21. The Chief of Police will always suspend his star detective - or give him 48 hours to finish the job.
22. Medieval peasants had perfect teeth.
23. Although in the 20th century it is possible to fire weapons at an object beyond visual range, this technology will be lost by the 23rd century and will never be recovered.
24. Nobody says hello or goodbye when beginning or ending phone conversations.
25. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large readouts so you know exactly when they're going to go off.
26. It is always possible to park directly outside any building you are visiting.
27. Detectives usually solve cases after being suspended from duty.
28. Nobody ever investigates police shootings, no matter how many shots are fired.
29. Spies are able to create all kinds of mayhem on the streets of major cities, and those streets are never shut down for cleanup afterward. No charges are ever filed.
30. If someone decides to start dancing in the street, everyone else will hear the same music and instinctively synchronize their steps and dance along in the background.
31. Most laptop computers are powerful enough to override the communication systems of any invading alien even when they have no idea of their language or syntax....

Things I learned from the movies:
1. If being chased through town, you can usually take cover in a passing St Patrick's Day parade - at any time of the year.
2. All beds have special L-shaped top sheets that reach up to armpit level on a woman but only waist level on the man lying beside her.
3. All grocery shopping bags contain at least one stick of French bread.
4. Once applied, lipstick will never rub off - even while scuba diving.
5. The ventilation system of any building is a perfect hiding place. No one will ever think of looking for you in there and you can travel to any other part of the building without difficulty.
6. Should you wish to pass yourself off as a German officer, it will not be necessary to speak the language. A German accent will do.
7. The Eiffel Tower can be seen from any window of any building in Paris.
8. A man will show no pain while taking the most ferocious beating but will wince when a woman tries to clean his wounds.
9. When paying for a taxi, never look at your wallet as you take out a note - just grab one at random and hand it over. It will always be the exact fare.
10. If you lose a hand, it will cause the stump of your arm to grow by 15cm.
11. Mothers routinely cook eggs, bacon and waffles for their family every morning, even though the husband and children never have time to eat them.
12. Cars and trucks that crash will almost always burst into flames.
13. A single match will be sufficient to light up a room the size of a football stadium.
14. Medieval peasants had perfect teeth.
15. All single women have a cat.
16. Any person waking from a nightmare will sit bolt upright and pant.
17. One man shooting at 20 men has a better chance of killing them all than 20 men firing at one.
18. Creepy music coming from a graveyard should always be closely investigated.
19. Most people keep a scrapbook of newspaper cuttings - especially if any of their family or friends has died in a strange boating accident.
20. It does not matter if you are heavily outnumbered in a fight involved martial arts - your enemies will wait patiently to attack you one by one by dancing around in a threatening manner until you have knocked out their predecessor.
21. During a very emotional confrontation, instead of facing the person you are speaking to, it is customary to stand behind them and talk to their back.
22. When you turn out the light to go to bed, everything in your room will still be clearly visible, just slightly bluish.
23. Dogs always know who's bad and will naturally bark at them.
24. When they are alone, all foreigners prefer to speak English to each other.
25. Rather than wasting bullets, megalomaniacs prefer to kill their arch-enemies using complicated machinery involving fuses, pulley systems, deadly gases, lasers and man eating sharks that will allow their captives at least 20 minutes to escape.
26. Having a job of any kind will make all fathers forget their son's eighth birthday.
27. Many musical instruments - especially wind instruments and accordions - can be played without moving the fingers.
28. All bombs are fitted with electronic timing devices with large red readouts so you know exactly when they're going to go off.
29. It is always possible to park directly outside the building you are visiting.
30. A detective can only solve a case once he has been suspended from duty.
31. If you decide to start dancing in the street, everyone you bump into will know all the steps.

Chicago police announced charges in the murder of Chicago police officer Enrique Martinez, who was shot and killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop earlier this week.
Darian McMillian, 23, has been charged with one count of felony first-degree murder of a police officer and one count of felony first-degree murder in addition to several other charges, including one count of felony residential burglary and one felony count of attempted murder of a police officer.
McMillian was on electronic monitoring and had been convicted of a felony previously.
"This offender is a convicted felon who was on electronic monitoring out of Will County. Needless to say, this individual should not have been on our streets with a fully automatic weapon, a weapon used to kill Officer Martinez," CPD Supt. Larry Snelling said.
Snelling expressed anger at Martinez's killing, referencing the line of duty killings of other Chicago police officers in the last few years.
"Anger doesn't describe the feeling that I feel right now when we think about the loss of this officer who was out trying to protect the city. I think of all of the losses that we've had over this time over this past few years. We've suffered the deaths through these violent experiences of Officer Luis Huesca, Officer Areanah Preston, Officer Vasquez Lasso and Officer Ella French," Snelling said.
Snelling called for more focus on repeat offenders and violent crimes in wake of the charges against McMillian.
"We have to channel that anger into energy that's going to keep our city safe by focusing on the violent crimes and the violent acts that are being committed throughout our city. To focus on those repeat offenders who continue to offend and continue to terrorize our city and our communities. In his final moments, he protected our city," Snelling said.
Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursitti offered additional details on the traffic stop that led to the fatal shooting of Martinez.
Ursitti said the stop occurred around 8 p.m. Monday in the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue, when a traffic stop was conducted on a vehicle, with three people inside, blocking traffic at the intersection.
According to Ursitti, Martinez and his partner were speaking with the driver of the vehicle when after noticing that McMillian, who was in the front passenger seat, had reached for a bag on the floor of the vehicle.
Officer Martinez and his partner then gave verbal commands for McMillian to stop reaching, at which time he pulled out a fully automatic handgun equipped with a machine gun conversion device and an extended magazine before firing in the direction of Martinez, fatally striking him. The driver of the vehicle was also fatally struck by McMillian's gunfire.
Ursitti said McMillian then pushed the driver out of the vehicle and jumped into the driver's seat as another officer attempted to pull McMillian away from the vehicle. McMillian then put the vehicle in reverse, dragging the officer near McMillian. The officer fired their weapon once, which did not strike McMillian.
"The vehicle crashed into a parked car, coming to a stop a short distance later. McMillian fled the vehicle and entered a first-floor apartment with a woman inside. McMillian found a knife he used to cut off his electronic monitoring bracelet and then fled the scene," Ursitti said. The woman was unharmed in the incident.
A short time later, officers located McMillian in the 8000 block of South Maryland Avenue, where he was taken into custody after being positively identified.
"While this does not erase the grief of Officer Martinez's family, we hope it brings a small measure of comfort knowing the person responsible for his murder will face justice. I want to thank the responding officers and detectives from the investigative response team who made sure this offender was taken into custody and would not be able to hurt anyone else," Ursitti said.
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his condolences for Martinez's family, while referencing a shooting in West Rogers Park late last month in which officers and paramedics were fired upon after an Orthodox Jewish man was shot in a hate crime.
"A mere six days later, we stand once again shoulder to shoulder, talking about the horrific violence that continues to plague not just our city, but the men and women who wear a uniform and run to the danger," Johnson said.
"Our officers go out and face this type of danger every single day," Snelling said following the shooting. "And this work is unpredictable. We never know what's in store for our officers when they're out there trying to keep the public safe. And just remember, in a city where our officers are not safe, its going to be hard for everyone else to be safe."
According to Snelling, Martinez was 26 years old, and just shy of three years on the job. He worked in the 6th District, NBC 5's Lisa Chavarria said, which includes the Gresham neighborhood and other surrounding communities.
"A proud individual," Snelling said. "Very hard working."

Pulp Storytime #52: STUMBLE in the Bronx!
March 17, 1935. We started with Florence and the others at the Edgar Allen Poe cottage in everyone’s favorite borough, the Bronx. They were giving Rupert’s pal J.R.R. Tolkien a tour of NYC, and this was a place of literary significance. Unfortunately, the front door burst open, with two revelers “wanting to see the Raven guy”. Florence politely but firmly sent them on their way, but noticed that the street was full of drunks. But not normal St. Patrick’s Day drunks; ones sloshed, pissed, and thick as a rush-hour subway car. It was time to investigate… But also get lunch. The two Brits (Professor Callahan and Kabir) rolled up their sleeves and began punching their way across the land once colonized by Jonas Bronck. (Two people in the group had lore at +3, so the trivia quotient was high.) It wasn’t long before they reached the relative safely of the Simon’s family deli!
The group strategized over matzoh ball soup and knishes. Penny took some time to let a crushing Devika down easy (“You’re too young, you’re not my type, and since you’re co-owner of Florence’s detective agency, you’re my boss.” “Uhhhhhh…fair…”). Winston and Simon reminisced about simpler times (tracking down and destroying a floating Nazi airbase).
Kabir, the only one on mission, rifled through the newspapers. There were some ads for green beer, but someone had clipped all the coupons on the other side. Luckily, they knew someone who was both an expert in beer and the Bronx…STEEL EAGLE! The players cleverly avoided main streets and the subway, instead heading east and grabbing a boat. (There was a fun subplot here where the very British duo taunted some Irish mariners. One crashed chasing them, and Penny was obligated as a lifeguard to save his life…after sobering up and apologizing, he just stayed by the boat the rest of the adventure.) The fivesome (Everybody and J.R.R.) sailed up the river to Steel Eagle’s haunt, the Yankee [stadium] Tavern. Callahan asked how they would know if Gyatso was in. The prof was answered by a body flying out the front window. The Tibetan spirit of the Bronx and his Polish sidekick Eddie Pulaski were in their element, brawling through waves of boozers. After clearing the floor, the bartender volunteered information: Someone was giving out tons of green beer, for free, and every bar in the city was serving it. Why not? It’s hard not to profit on free! “Well, the reason why not is…” The Oxford debater gestured around the destroyed bar. The players argued about who had the cash to pay for it, while Professor Callahan repaired the phone…and rolled a perfect result. Somehow, he had turned the nickel-taking device into an international radio, able to reach any phone. Following up on the suspicion, Florence called the Midas subsidiary, Crane Pharmaceuticals. The secretary acted extremely suspicious when asked about any breweries, especially the one uptown. Whatta lead! Further up the river, the players smelled the factories before they saw them. Tolkien and the mariner stayed on the boat as the players entered the industrial district. And while breaking in was easy, nobody in the group had any faculty for stealth. They were immediately caught by the evil chemist responsible… Their old rival Célia Nachtnebel! She summoned her security team, and hit a button, sending Florence into a vat of the green beer!
Seeing the torch singer swim out safely, the group was overly tactful and indecisive. The guards responded to this with gunfire. This was a major fight, and the mook squads were a match for the heroes (except for one defeated by Kabir’s words, which sent the security squad into unstoppable infighting). Célia dropped her bon-mots on Penny, infuriating her. “I didn’t know Devika’s coattails reached all the way to the distillery. And you haven’t gotten anywhere without riding them.” Callahan threw some elbows, clearing his way to some massive machinery and sabotaging it. Florence held her own despite a lack of fighting talent; her time as a hobo meant she could take some hits. Célia Nachtnebel fled, with Penny compelled to chase her through a dangerous maze of equipment. The Hawaiian pushed through the door to an outside catwalk… But it was a trap! Below, a janitor sprayed a crowd of rioting locals. Green beer covered the New Yorkers… And Celia tried to hurl Penny down three stories into the fray!
The gambling prodigy managed to keep her balance, and as the two grappled, Penny pleaded with the chemist; didn’t Celia remember her rescue in Montenegro? Unfortunately, whatever gratitude Celia had was boiled away perfecting alcoholic madness! And worse, Penny was being leaned off the edge… “It’s just a shame, An’Te… I wish I was killing the girl.” Elsewhere, Kabir searched for Penny. Obviously he was the leader of the group (Since he had the Order of the British Empire). It would be ridiculous to not take care of all the group members… and he arrived just in time to save Penny from Nachtnebel’s manicured choke! Meanwhile, distillery security noticed all the dials going into the red. They didn’t want to die for a crummy gig… But if Professor Callahan didn’t undo what he did, the entire building would blow up! Outside, Penny scrambled to her feet, and tried to rush away…and was sprayed by the hose man! Only her years of lifeguard training allowed her to grab the catwalk instead of being knocked to her doom! Meanwhile, security, Florence and the Prof struggled to undo his sabotage. With only seconds remaining, they released the steam-tension and drained the toxic beer into the waste tanks. Kabir appealed to Celia’s sense of self-preservation. Surely there was more to life than sabotaging New Yorkers, causing misery? She paused, thinking over his words, then gave him a piece of her mind. Straight onto his dress shirt. Penny blew smoke off her purse pistol. Celia scowled. “What a bitch.” The madwoman took half a step before plummeting to the brickyard below. ——— Back at the deli, the group had dinner and debriefed. Drunk Florence was willing to eat anything. Callahan used his phone hacking skills to call Doc Midas’s private outgoing phone.
Unfortunately, the professor wasn’t a great judge of character. He was bowled over by Midas’s lies (“I never met that woman, this wasn’t authorized, she’s fired… What do you mean dead?! Well, I guess I should donate a few barrels of my all-natural health elixir to the hungover masses…”). Oh well. Time for kugel. Penny gave Devi an overprotective hug. Elsewhere, Jimmy Pulaski comforted Steel Eagle. “I don’t know why they didn’t invite you, boss. Maybe they weren’t going to punch anybody.”

Chapter 10 Summary
(episodes 278-308)
6 months have passed since the end of Chapter 9. Megyn's relationship with Jayden has blossomed and the two have been figuring out what they want out of their relationship while exploring important topics such as boundaries and communication. Meanwhile, Megyn has decided to wait another year before pursuing college because she still doesn't have enough money to attend.
After the end of the flashback at the beginning of the chapter, Megyn and Jayden wake up on the morning of their 6-month anniversary since starting their relationship. Megyn gets up and watches the news on TV, where the news provides details about a car accident that happened overnight. Jayden is frustrated as the crash happened on a road both of them take to work, but Megyn feels a strange premonition about the crash, telling Jayden that something doesn't feel right. In that moment, a knock comes from the door.
Jayden answers it and is greeted by the police, who are looking for Megyn. Megyn makes herself present to the police and they tell her that the victim of the crash as described on the news was her father Nick and that he has life-threatening injuries. Megyn is shocked and the police offer to escort her to the hospital where her father is being treated. Jayden volunteers to go with her as he believes she shouldn't go through such a traumatic event alone.
They arrive at the hospital where the police detective informs Megyn that her mother Molly has already been notified and is waiting in the lobby, much to Megyn's dismay. The detective offers to escort Megyn to her mother and she accepts, with Jayden by her side. Megyn and Molly are reunited, with Megyn clearly being upset about seeing her. They are then scouted out by the doctor overseeing Nick's care and are escorted to her office.
The doctor provides the details of Nick's injuries and informs them that full recovery is unlikely, and that if he did recover, Nick would be permanently disabled. Molly provides her account of the events leading up to the crash after she tells Megyn Nick was motivated to drive drunk after he found out Megyn was living in San Myshuno. The doctor then offers to escort the two to Nick's room in the ICU where they may visit him.
In the room, Megyn sees just how extensive Nick's injuries are. He has visible burns, bandages, and is connected to multiple life-sustaining devices. While Molly is standing at his bedside, she hears Megyn begin to cry and approaches her, offering to have Megyn sit with her so they can talk. Megyn is at first very upset and unwilling to listen to anything Molly says, but after Molly answers the question of why she never reported Megyn to the police, Megyn begins to come around, but struggles to believe Molly wholeheartedly and doesn't know what to feel. Molly, knowing Megyn is in distress, brings her back to the lobby so she can be with Jayden.
Later in the day, an exhausted Megyn is seen resting on the lap of Jayden. Molly returns to the lobby to see the two together and comments to Jayden she can tell that Megyn trusts him a lot. The two have a brief conversation about how they met each other until the doctor scouts her and Megyn again.
The doctor informs Megyn and Molly that Nick has been declared brain dead, meaning there is no hope for recovery. They are escorted back to Nick's room, where many doctors are seen working to remove Nick from life support. At 5:42 PM, Nick's heart monitor flatlines, indicating that his heart has stopped.
Megyn struggles to process reality. She finds Molly in front of a window where the sun is beaming through. Megyn asks her why she looks so calm and Molly simply answers with "We're free." Molly is referring to being free from the abuse they have endured because of Nick.
Back in the doctor's office, the doctor recommends Megyn and Molly be admitted to a mental health and substance abuse rehab center together. Molly is interested and wants to go, but Megyn states that she will only go with her if she stops drinking and smoking permanently and that she never get together with someone like Nick again. Molly gives Megyn her word on the promise and as a result, both agree to go to rehab together.
Eva, Wyatt, and Eva's parents find out what happened and come down to the hospital to give Megyn and Molly support, and a few days later back at the apartment, the friends are seeing bidding Megyn farewell before she goes away to rehab. Jayden is saddened to see Megyn leave for awhile, but Megyn assures him she will be back before he knows it and gives him a parting kiss.
At the end of the chapter, Megyn and Molly are seen at the entrance of the rehab center. Megyn feels ready to begin a new era with her mother, and upon being asked by Molly if she's ready, Megyn answers by saying "I've been ready my entire life."

Everything You Need to Know About Air Bags: History, Types, Technology, and Future Trends
Introduction to Air Bags
Air bags are crucial safety devices in modern vehicles, designed to protect passengers during a collision by inflating rapidly to cushion the impact. When a crash occurs, air bags deploy instantly, reducing the risk of serious injury by preventing the passengers from hitting hard surfaces like the dashboard or steering wheel.
These life-saving devices have significantly contributed to road safety, with their ability to reduce fatalities and injuries in high-impact accidents. Air bags are often seen as the first line of defense in a crash, working alongside seatbelts to secure the body in place and absorb shock.
While seatbelts are effective at restraining a passenger, they don't offer enough protection from the forces of a crash. Air bags complement seatbelts by providing additional cushioning, particularly for the head, chest, and knees. Today, vehicles come equipped with multiple types of air bags, each designed to address specific crash scenarios. From frontal air bags to side-impact and curtain air bags, these systems work together to create a protective bubble around the occupants.
In this article, we will explore the history, technology, and future of air bags, highlighting how they have evolved to become a standard safety feature in nearly every vehicle on the road today.
History of Air Bags
The concept of air bags dates back to the early 1950s when automotive engineers began exploring ways to reduce injuries during car crashes. The idea was inspired by the need for an innovative, additional safety measure beyond the seatbelt, which was already in use but not always enough to prevent serious harm in high-impact collisions.
In 1953, an inventor named John Hetrick patented the first air bag design, which he called a "safety cushion." His vision was to deploy a cushion upon impact to protect passengers from hitting hard surfaces. However, it wasn’t until the 1970s that serious work began on developing an air bag system that could be incorporated into cars.
The first production cars with air bags appeared in the late 1970s. Chrysler was among the first to offer an air bag system in its vehicles, introducing it as an optional feature in 1973. Despite the initial interest, air bags did not become widespread due to cost concerns and consumer reluctance.
In the 1980s, as safety regulations began tightening, the U.S. government took steps to make air bags more commonplace. In 1998, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated that all vehicles manufactured for the U.S. market be equipped with front airbags, significantly improving road safety. Since then, air bags have become a standard feature in nearly all vehicles, saving thousands of lives every year.
How Air Bags Work
Air bags are designed to deploy quickly during a collision to cushion the impact of the crash. They are part of a larger safety system within the vehicle that works in coordination with seat belts and other protective features. The deployment process is triggered by sensors that detect sudden deceleration or impact, signaling the air bag system to activate.
When a crash occurs, a series of sensors embedded in the vehicle (usually in the front and side areas) detect the force of the collision. These sensors send a signal to the air bag control unit, which activates the inflator system. The inflators rapidly fill the air bag with gas, causing it to inflate in a fraction of a second.
Most air bags are made from a durable, nylon fabric designed to expand quickly. Inside the air bag, there are chemicals that react when ignited, producing nitrogen gas. This gas inflates the bag within milliseconds to cushion the driver or passenger from hitting the dashboard, windshield, or steering wheel.
The rapid inflation is critical because it ensures the air bag inflates before the person’s body makes contact with hard surfaces. Air bags are designed to deflate quickly after deployment, allowing the occupants to continue moving after the initial impact.
Different types of air bags are deployed depending on the nature and severity of the crash, including front, side, and curtain air bags, each designed for specific types of impact.
Types of Air Bags in Vehicles
Modern vehicles come equipped with several types of air bags, each designed to protect passengers during different types of collisions. The primary goal of these air bags is to cushion the impact and minimize injuries. Let’s explore the main types of air bags commonly found in cars today.
Frontal Air Bags:
These are the most common air bags and are typically located in the steering wheel for the driver and in the dashboard for the front passenger. Frontal air bags are deployed during a head-on collision to protect the upper body and head by preventing the occupant from slamming into the dashboard, windshield, or steering wheel.
Side-Impact Air Bags: Side-impact air bags deploy in the event of a side collision to protect the torso, abdomen, and chest area. These air bags are typically located in the side of the seat or the door panel. They help cushion the impact from the side of the vehicle, which can be one of the most dangerous types of collisions.
Curtain Air Bags: These air bags are designed to protect the head and neck in side-impact or rollover accidents. They deploy from the roof lining above the side windows and cover the window area, creating a barrier between the occupants and any potential impact from the door or glass.
Knee Air Bags: Knee air bags are positioned beneath the dashboard and deploy in a frontal crash to protect the lower body, particularly the knees and legs. They help reduce the risk of leg and knee injuries by preventing the lower body from hitting the dashboard.
Seatbelt-Integrated Air Bags: These air bags are built into the seatbelt itself and deploy during a collision to further restrain the passenger’s movement. They work in conjunction with traditional seatbelts, offering an additional layer of protection by absorbing impact forces on the chest.
Each of these air bags is tailored to provide specific protection during different collision scenarios, working in tandem with other safety features in the vehicle to ensure maximum protection for the passengers.
Air Bag Sensors and Deployment Technology
Air bag deployment is not a random process; it’s highly controlled and precise, thanks to the advanced technology behind air bag sensors and triggering systems. These systems ensure that air bags only deploy when necessary, such as during a significant impact, and at the right moment to maximize safety.
Sensors:
Air bags are equipped with a variety of sensors that detect sudden deceleration or impact. These sensors are typically located in key areas around the vehicle, such as the front bumper, side panels, and the frame of the car. The most common sensors used for air bag deployment are accelerometers, which measure changes in velocity, and pressure sensors, which monitor changes in force or pressure during a collision.
The sensors continuously send data to the air bag control unit (ACU), which is the brain of the system. The ACU processes this data and determines if the impact meets the necessary criteria for air bag deployment. This ensures that air bags are only activated in serious collisions, preventing unnecessary deployment in minor accidents.
Deployment Technology: Once the sensors trigger a signal, the air bag inflators are activated. The inflators use a chemical reaction to generate gas (usually nitrogen) that inflates the air bag almost instantaneously, in less than 30 milliseconds. The timing of this deployment is crucial, as it must occur before the occupant’s body makes contact with any part of the vehicle.
In modern vehicles, air bag systems are becoming more sophisticated, with smart sensors that can adjust the deployment force depending on factors like the severity of the crash, the size of the occupant, and the position of the seat. This level of precision ensures that air bags provide the most effective protection without causing additional harm.
As technology continues to advance, air bag sensors and deployment systems are evolving to become more responsive, precise, and adaptable, contributing to a higher level of vehicle safety.
Common Issues and Concerns with Air Bags
While air bags are critical safety features in modern vehicles, they are not without their issues and potential concerns. Understanding common problems with air bags and being aware of potential risks can help vehicle owners ensure their air bag systems remain functional and safe.
Air Bag Malfunctions:
One of the most significant concerns regarding air bags is the possibility of malfunctions. In some cases, air bags may fail to deploy in the event of a crash due to a faulty sensor, wiring issue, or inflator problem. On the other hand, air bags could deploy unnecessarily due to a system failure, potentially causing injury to the vehicle occupants. Regular maintenance and timely repairs are essential to minimize the chances of malfunction.
Air Bag Recalls: Occasionally, manufacturers may issue air bag recalls due to defects in their systems. For example, a major recall occurred in recent years involving Takata airbags, which had the potential to explode due to a faulty inflator. If your vehicle’s air bag system is under recall, it’s critical to have it inspected and repaired to ensure it functions correctly. Check for recall notices by using the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) recall database or contacting the manufacturer.
Air Bags and Smaller Passengers: Air bags, while designed to protect adults, can pose risks to smaller passengers, especially young children or people of shorter stature. If a child is seated in the front passenger seat, an air bag deployment can cause severe injury or even death. This is why it’s recommended that children under the age of 12 sit in the back seat, where they are less likely to be injured by air bag deployment.
Deactivation of Air Bags: In some cases, vehicle owners may need to deactivate the passenger side air bag, especially if they are traveling with children in child seats. This should only be done according to manufacturer guidelines, as disabling the air bag may limit the vehicle’s safety in a crash. Always consult the owner’s manual for proper instructions.
Being aware of these issues and taking necessary precautions can help ensure that air bags remain a reliable safety feature in your vehicle. Regularly servicing your vehicle and paying attention to air bag warning lights or notifications can prevent potential problems and enhance your safety on the road.
Maintenance and Air Bag Safety
Ensuring that your vehicle's air bags are functioning properly is essential for your safety. While air bags are designed to last the life of the vehicle, like any other safety system, they require periodic checks and maintenance. Understanding how to maintain air bag systems and what to do in case of an issue can help you stay safe on the road.
Regular Vehicle Inspections:
Although air bags are low-maintenance systems, it’s important to have your vehicle regularly inspected by a professional. Certified mechanics can check for any signs of malfunction or wear in the air bag system, such as faulty sensors, damaged wiring, or issues with the control unit. Many service centers offer diagnostic checks that can identify potential air bag issues before they become critical.
Air Bag Warning Lights: Modern vehicles are equipped with warning lights that alert drivers when there is a problem with the air bag system. If you see an air bag warning light (usually indicated by a figure of a person sitting with a deployed airbag), it’s crucial to have the system checked as soon as possible. A malfunctioning air bag can put you at risk in the event of an accident, and the light may indicate an issue with sensors, wiring, or the air bag itself.
What to Do if the Air Bag Light Is On: If the air bag light stays illuminated after starting the car, it typically means there’s a fault with the system. This could be a minor issue or a serious problem that affects air bag deployment. In either case, it’s best to take your vehicle to a certified repair shop as soon as possible to have it diagnosed and fixed.
Air Bag Deployment After an Accident: If your air bags deploy in an accident, they should be inspected by a professional before you drive the vehicle again. The air bags themselves will need to be replaced, and the system should be checked for damage. Many vehicles require recalibration of the sensors after air bag deployment to ensure proper function in future crashes.

RENO, Nev. — U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks, who was appointed by former President George W. Bush in 2001, died Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle in Nevada. He was 80.
The Reno Police Department was called to a vehicle-pedestrian crash near the federal courthouse in downtown Reno at about 2:15 p.m. Hicks was transported to the hospital but died just after, authorities said.
The driver involved in the crash remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, authorities added. Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Officials paid tribute to Hick, who was remembered for his love of his family and Reno community.
"Today’s news regarding the Honorable Judge Larry R. Hicks who served Nevada for over 53 years is tragic," Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said on X. "Despite his notable accomplishments, Judge Hicks once stated, 'My greatest thrill in life is my family.' His life philosophy was based on a balance of family, work, and self."
“Larry Hicks was a one-of-a-kind man, revered in our community and, most importantly, beloved by his family. On behalf of my family and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office, we extend our deepest condolences to Larry’s son Chris, the current District Attorney, and all of Larry’s family. Judge Hicks’ legacy will forever be noted in Washoe County.”
On Wednesday night, the District Attorney's Office released a statement on behalf of the Hicks family:
"Today, our community lost an extraordinary man. Judge Larry Hicks was a deeply admired lawyer and judge, a devoted friend, mentor, and a committed servant to the administration of justice. To us, he was first and foremost a man who put nothing before family. He was a hero in all manners, a loving husband of nearly 59 years, a doting dad, an adoring Papa, and brother. His loss is beyond comprehension."
District attorney, judge, family man
Hicks was a former Washoe County district attorney and the father of Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks.
In a video interview with his son in 2022, the judge talked about the quality he was most proud of that he got from his parents: "Devotion to family above and beyond all other qualities. My mother and father were totally dedicated to their children."
In the interview, Hicks said he and his wife, with whom he also had two daughters, would be celebrating their 57th anniversary.
Hicks was born in Evanston, Ohio, and his family moved to Reno from Los Angeles when he was 13. He graduated from Reno High School and became the first person in his family to attend college when he entered the University of Nevada, where he joined Sigma Nu fraternity, according to the interview.
In 2020, Chris Hicks posted a tribute to his father after he won an award.
"Recently, the State Bar of Nevada honored my dad, Judge Larry Hicks, with the Presidential Award recognizing his illustrious career," Chris Hicks wrote. "The prestigious award is presented to those whose conduct, honesty, and integrity represent the highest standards of the legal profession.
"Congratulations Dad. There is no one more deserving! Thank you for being the father, mentor, and lawyer you are."
Earlier this month, Hicks presided over a private investigator's lawsuit that claimed Sparks police detectives violated his rights by naming him as the person who put a tracking device on Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve's vehicle.
Hicks called David McNeely's argument "unpersuasive and unsupported" and dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning a similar lawsuit cannot be refiled.
The U.S. District Court said flags over the federal courthouses in Nevada will be flown at half-staff in honor of Hicks.

The role of safety sensors in protecting valuable assets
When it comes to safeguarding valuable assets, whether it’s your home, car, or business inventory, the role of safety sensors cannot be overstated. In today’s world, these technological advancements provide an essential layer of security, enhancing both convenience and protection. One of the most common places where safety sensors are used is in garage doors, which are often the first line of defense for many homes and businesses.
What Are Safety Sensors and How Do They Work?
Safety sensors, often known as photoelectric sensors, are small but mighty devices typically installed on either side of a garage door. They work by emitting a beam of infrared light. When the beam is interrupted by an object or a person, the sensor triggers a response, usually stopping the garage door from closing. This technology was specifically designed to prevent accidents, such as a garage door coming down on a vehicle, person, or pet, making it an invaluable feature.
For example, if your garage door detects a person or object in its path while closing, it will automatically reverse. This simple yet effective safety measure helps prevent damage to your vehicle, avoids potential injuries, and can even protect pets or children who might wander too close to the door.
Why Are Safety Sensors Important?
You may be wondering why you need to prioritize safety sensors in the first place. Well, the statistics are eye-opening. Thousands of injuries occur each year from malfunctioning garage doors. Without properly functioning safety sensors, a garage door could come crashing down without warning, leading to serious damage or even fatalities.
Additionally, beyond physical safety, safety sensors also help protect the valuable assets within your garage or business. Whether it's your car, equipment, or expensive tools, the garage is often home to a range of important items. A sensor can help ensure that these items remain intact and unharmed. For businesses, the security and protection of valuable inventory, documents, or machinery is paramount. A sensor can prevent costly damage and give you peace of mind.
Common Issues with Safety Sensors
While safety sensors are a great investment, they can sometimes malfunction or require repair. Some of the most common issues include misalignment, dirt or debris blocking the sensor’s beam, and wiring problems. These problems can prevent the sensors from detecting obstacles, thus compromising their ability to protect your home or business.
Misalignment: Safety sensors need to be properly aligned to function correctly. Over time, they can shift slightly due to external factors like strong winds, vibrations from vehicles, or even just regular wear and tear. Misalignment can prevent the sensors from sending signals to each other, and in turn, the garage door might not operate as intended.
Dirty Sensors: Dust, dirt, or spider webs can accumulate on the sensors, obstructing their infrared light beam. When this happens, the sensor may fail to detect anything in its path, which can lead to accidents.
Electrical Issues: Sometimes, the wiring of safety sensors can become damaged, leading to malfunctions. This could be due to electrical storms, pests chewing on wires, or just natural wear and tear over time.

Analyzing Black Box Data: High-Tech Evidence in Modern Auto Cases
Understanding the Importance of Black Box Data in Cars
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, we often overlook the technology that’s right under our noses—specifically, the black box in our cars. These devices, formally known as Event Data Recorders (EDRs), are akin to flight recorders in airplanes. They capture critical information during a vehicle's operation, especially leading up to an accident. This data can be pivotal in understanding what happened during a crash and can serve as high-tech evidence in modern auto cases.
Cars today are equipped with advanced electronic systems that monitor various parameters like speed, braking patterns, and even seatbelt usage. When accidents occur, this data becomes crucial for law enforcement, insurance companies, and legal professionals who need to piece together the events leading to the collision.
What is a Black Box?
A black box is not literally a black box but rather an electronic device installed in most modern vehicles. It continuously collects and stores data related to vehicle dynamics and conditions prior to a crash. The information collected is typically retained for several seconds before an incident occurs and can include:
Vehicle speed Brake status Steering angle Airbag deployment Seatbelt engagement
This information provides invaluable insights into driver behavior and vehicle performance at critical moments.
How Does Black Box Data Work?
The technology behind EDRs involves sensors that detect changes in various parameters while the vehicle is in use. When a significant event occurs—like rapid deceleration or sudden impact—the black box records relevant data just before and after the incident. This data is stored on non-volatile memory chips, ensuring that it remains intact even if there’s loss of power post-accident.
For instance, if you were involved in a collision, investigators could retrieve this information to determine how fast you were going when you hit the brakes or whether your seatbelt was buckled at the time of impact.
Legal Ramifications of Black Box Data
The use of black box data has wide-ranging implications in legal cases involving automobiles. Here’s how it plays out:
1. Insurance Claims
Insurance companies often rely on black box data to validate claims made by policyholders. For example, if a driver claims they were obeying traffic signals at the time of an accident but the EDR indicates otherwise, it could lead to complications with their claim.
2. Liability Determination
In cases where fault needs to be established between two parties involved in an accident, black box data can provide clarity. If one driver was speeding or engaged in reckless driving behaviors captured by the EDR, it may significantly influence liability assessments.
3. Criminal Investigations
In serious accidents where criminal charges may be applicable—such as DUI cases—the data from black boxes can be pivotal evidence. Authorities can analyze this information alongside other testimonies and physical evidence at the scene.
4. Product Liability Cases
If there are malfunctions causing accidents—like brake failures or airbag non-deployments—black box data can he
