Used car sales in Philippines to cross 4,50,000 units by 2026. Will Philippines continue the support for increased sale of used cars?
Citizens refraining from using public transport in Philippines
Tumblr media
The pandemic year brought a drastic change in the preferences of people in terms of public transport. Although, the quality of public transport was already deteriorating forcing multiple people to opt for their personal cars, Covid-19 made owning a personal car unavoidable.Due to the social distancing protocols, people don’t prefer travelling from public transport anymore. Majority of the people using public transport before the pandemic were the ones who could not afford a car (or brand new at the least). However, it became inevitable after the pandemic struck the country and demand for used cars increased drastically once the nationwide lockdown was lifted in the third quarter of the year. The increase in sales was drastic enough to compensate for the sales lost during the ECQ months and in 2020 there was only a slight decline in the used car market as compared to 2019.
Other Challenges in Philippines Used Car Market Outlook To 2026
2. Mixed Effect of Covid-19 on the Used Vehicle Market in the Philippines
Tumblr media
INCREASED DEMAND The demand for used cars increased drastically in the months of June and July as soon as the ECQ (Enhanced Community Quarantine) was suspended and the strict lockdown measures were eased
INCREASED INVENTORY OF REPOSSESSED CARS Approximately 2 million Filipinos lost their jobs due to the pandemic. Several others had to face pay cuts and temporary layoffs. Thus, the source of income for several individuals was adversely affected and a lot of them became bankrupt.
FINANCE CRUNCH Banks in the Philippines rejected multiple loan applications due to the risk factor brought in by the pandemic. The increasing delinquency rates was also an important factor. Sour debt at two banks BDO Unibank and Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co., jumped 120% in 2020.
ADVERSE IMPACT ON SMALL USED CAR DEALERS The pandemic rendered a lot of small used car dealers out of business. Since the used car business requires an ample amount of cash at spare for shelling out (for procuring pre-owned cars), some small (and unorganized) dealers were unable to withstand the losses incurred during the ECQ months.

3. Increased used car awareness among the masses in Philippines The awareness and marketing in used car market of Philippines has played an important role in changing customer’s mentality from buying a new car to a used car. The social media such as Facebook, which is generally used to build friends and contacts, share photos, events, communication and many more and used by almost every teenager, adult and even senior citizens, has now emerged as a viable platform to deal in used cars and make people aware about the certified used cars, merits of buying a pre-owned unit and others. The recent development in increase usage of social media websites have really helped the unorganized/ C2C market of used cars in Philippines as it is free medium to market an individual unit among friends and family.

Ok so I was mucking around online and came across Theriault's doll auctions.
A few thousand on a rare or antique doll I can totally see. But tens (or hundreds!!!!) Of thousands of dollars??? Who has that kind of money to spend on a single doll? Not that I don't think they could possibly be worth that much I guess. But...are these people buying the dolls because they will actually cherish them? Or are they just spending for bragging rights?
I just...I guess I hope it's museums.
Depends on the person, honestly.
I used to work for a dealer, and while we never got into the $10,000+ range, I did get a glimpse of who exactly makes that kind of purchase. Many of them do indeed really love the dolls; I think of one specific case where a dear friend of mine had a successful doll reproduction business and horse-traded his way up to an incredibly rare $20K 18th-century doll. He's not Bezos RichTM or anything. He just was a childfree artist who made good money and had priorities. Antique dolls were his one big indulgence: not a second home, not cars, not designer accessories. Dolls made him happy, so he was willing to save and grind away at his business and eat ramen sometimes to make the really insane ones his own.
For some, it IS the bragging rights. Never exactly the sort of people who are active in the community and who you'd want to spend time with, in my experience. I recall one heir to a major company who was in a battle with another hyper-rich guy for who could get the most rare [Doll Brand Redacted]. I guess it's better than spending your money on private jets and mega-yachts; at least they're works of art? At least you're supporting dealers and (usually) small auction houses? But it doesn't seem like true enjoyment to me. Not the way I see "lesser" collectors like my friends enjoying our dolls.
There's also the fact that not all collectors get their most valuable dolls at market value. Sure, the auction records you saw show people spending top dollar, but people having those dolls in their collection doesn't necessarily mean they spent that much. Some bought when the dolls were newer or the market was down, often the very elderly collectors. Some were gifted their dolls. Some got a rare head at an amazing price on a shitty cloth body with little T-Rex arms, and then sold another rare doll they got a deal on to buy a beautiful appropriate antique body.
(...Leonore. That was Leonore.)
And finally, sometimes it is indeed museums. The current record for most expensive doll ever sold at auction, for over $300,000, was an 1870s Rochard French fashion doll sold to the Barry Art Museum at Old Dominion University.

Gas Station Stream of Consciousness Post
Gas Stations as Liminal Spaces
Tumblr media
I've had quite a few hyperfixations in my day - ATMs, laundry detergents, credit cards - so my current one pertaining to gas stations is fitting considering my affinity for liminal spaces and the dedication of this blog to them. Liminal spaces are transitory in nature, hence their portrayal in online circles through photos of carpeted hallways, illuminated stairwells, dark roads, and backrooms, among other transitional points.
Tumblr media
Gas stations are posted online as well; images of their fuel pumps or neon signage photographed through a rainy car window communicate their liminality and the universal experiences they provide to all of society. Perhaps they are the ultimate specimen of a liminal space. The machines they are created for, automobiles and tractor trailers alike, themselves are tools for motion, vestibules that enable travel and shipment across long distances at high speeds. Cars and roads are liminal spaces, albeit in different formats, and gas stations serve as their lighthouses. Vehicles at filling stations, therefore, are in a sense liminal spaces within liminal spaces within liminal spaces.
Tumblr media
The uniqueness of a gas station as a liminal space, however, is its intersection with the economics and aesthetics of capitalism. Gasoline (and diesel fuel) is a commodity, downstream from crude oil, merely differentiated by octane ratings. Some argue that minute distinctions between agents, detergents, and additives make some brands better than others. Indeed, fuels that are approved by the Top Tier program, sponsored by automakers, have been shown to improve engine cleanliness and performance, but this classification does not prefer specific refiners over others; it is simply a standard. To a consumer, Top Tier fuels are themselves still interchangeable commodities within the wider gasoline commodity market.
The Economics of Gas Stations
Tumblr media
The market that gas stations serve is characterized by inelastic demand, with customers who reckon with prices that fluctuate day in and day out. This is not to say that consumer behavior does not change with fuel prices. It has been observed that as prices rise, consumers are more eager to find the cheapest gas, but when prices fall, drivers are less selective with where they pump and are just happy to fill up at a lower price than last week. In response, gas stations lower their prices at a slower rate than when increasing prices, allowing for higher profit margins when wholesale prices fall. This has been dubbed the "rockets and feathers" phenomenon.
Tumblr media
When portrayed as liminal spaces, gas stations are most often depicted at night, places of solitude where one may also enter the adjacent convenience store and encounter a fellow individual who isn't asleep, the modern day lightkeeper. The mart that resides at the backcourt of a gas station is known to sell goods at higher prices than a supermarket, simultaneously taking advantage of a captive customer, convenient location, and making up for the inefficiencies of a smaller operation. It may come as no surprise, then, that gas stations barely make any money from fuel sales and earn their bulk through C-store sales. This is a gripe I have with our economic system. Business is gamified, and in many cases the trade of certain goods and services, called loss leaders, is not an independent operation and is subsidized by the success of another division of a business, a strategy inherently more feasible for larger companies that have greater scale to execute it.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, most gas station owners, whether they have just one or hundreds of sites, find this method fruitful. Even though most gas stations in the US sell one of a handful of national brands, they operate on a branded reseller, or dealer, model, with oil companies themselves generally not taking part in the operations of stations that sell their fuels. The giants do still often have the most leverage and margin in the business, with the ability to set the wholesale price for the distributor, which sells at a markup to the station owner, which in turn will normally make the least profit in the chain when selling to the end customer at the pump. This kind of horizontal integration that involves many parties lacks the synergies and efficiencies of vertical integration that are so applauded by capitalists, but ends up being the most profitable for firms like ExxonMobil, who only extract and refine oil, and on the other end of the chain merely license their recognizable brands to the resellers through purchasing agreements. Furthermore, in recent years, independent dealers have sold their businesses to larger branded resellers, in many cases the ones from whom they had been buying their fuel.
A Word on ExxonMobil's Branding Potential
Tumblr media
The largest publicly traded oil company in the world is Exxon Mobil Corporation. It is a direct descendent of the Rockefeller monopoly, Standard Oil, which was broken up in 1911 into 34 companies, the largest of which was Jersey Standard, which became Exxon in 1973. This title was generated by a computer as the most appealing replacement name to be used nationwide to unify the Humble, Enco, and Esso brands, decades before AI was spoken of. The latter brand is still used outside of the United States for marketing, arising from the phonetic pronunciation of the initials of Standard Oil. In 1999, Exxon and Mobil merged, and the combined company to this day markets under separate brands. Exxon is more narrowly used, to brand fuel in the United States, while Mobil has remained a motor oil and industrial lubricant brand, as well as a fuel brand in multiple countries.
Tumblr media
Mobil originated in 1866 as the Vacuum Oil Company, which first used the current brand name for Mobiloil, and later Mobilgas and Mobilubricant products, with the prefix simply short for "automobile". Over time, Mobil became the corporation's primary identity, with its official name change to Mobil Oil Corporation taking place in 1966. Its updated wordmark with a signature red O was designed by the agency Chermayeff & Geismar, and the company's image for service stations was conceived by architect Eliot Noyes. New gas stations featured distinctive circular canopies over the pumps, and the company's recognizable pegasus logo was prominently on display for motorists.
Tumblr media
I take issue with the deyassification of the brand's image over time. As costs were cut and uniformity took over, rectangular canopies were constructed in place of the special ones designed by Noyes that resembled large mushrooms. The pegasus remained a prominent brand icon, but the Mobil wordmark took precedence, which I personally believe to be an error in judgement. This disregard for the pegasus paved the way for its complete erasure in 2016 with the introduction of ExxonMobil's "Synergy" brand for its fuel. The mythical creature is now much smaller and appears only at the top right corner of pumps at Mobil gas stations, if at all.
Tumblr media
Even into the 90s and the 21st century the Pegasus had its place in Mobil's marketing. In 1997, the company introduced its Speedpass keytag, which was revolutionary for its time and used RFID technology, akin to mobile payments today, to allow drivers to get gas without entering the store or swiping a card. When a Speedpass would be successfully processed, the pegasus on the gas pump would light up red.
Tumblr media
When Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999, the former adopted the payment method too, with Exxon's less iconic tiger in place of the pegasus.
Tumblr media
The program was discontinued in 2019 in favor of ExxonMobil's app, which is more secure since it processes payments through the internet rather than at the pump.
Tumblr media
What Shell has done with its brand identity is what Mobil should've done for itself. The European company's logo was designed in 1969 by Raymond Loewy, and is a worth contender for the "And Yet a Trace of the True Self Exists in the False Self" meme. In recent years, Shell went all in on its graphic, while Mobil's pegasus flew away. I choose to believe that the company chose to rebrand its stations in order to prevent the malfunction in the above image from happening.
Tumblr media
ExxonMobil should have also discontinued the use of the less storied Exxon brand altogether, and simplifying its consumer-facing identity to just the global Mobil mark. Whatever, neither of the names are actual words. As a bonus, here is a Google map I put together of all 62 gas stations in Springfield, MA. This is my idea of fun. Thanks for reading to the end!

Good gnus bad gnus time.
I pulled an all nighter earlier this week and knocked out the finale for CDE. All totalled it's like 13 or 14 chapters plus an epilogue. It was def a labor of love and I'm glad to be done with it. Now I can go back to writing other topics that people enjoy.
Life update: everything's fucked.
The parentals have been dragging me out of bed early all week with random demands. Drive my mom to the doctor. Deal with a repair guy they hired but weren't able to be there for the visit. Sometimes they just call me at ass early o clock to tell me to wake up because no one should sleep so late even tho I sleep so late because nighttime is the only time I feel safe to be active. It's when I do all my writing and gaming because a) work actually leaves me alone and b) I don't (normally) have family barging into my room without knocking at 3 am.
I'm currently kinda stressed about funds ATM. I blew all my savings and my last months paycheck repairing my car. Over the past few months I've been sinking more and more money into it to get it running. What started as a small warning light Digivolves into needing massive electrical work.as well as getting the entire ABS system replaced. All totaled I spent over 10k on it. I did some shopping for a new(?) Car but with interests rates as they are most dealers were offering 15% apr which is insane. So I decided to get my car running and see if I can keep it alive long enough for the market to turn around.
The good gnus is that I got it running and it seems to be working fine. Just in time for me to have to go on a road trip for work which will require me having to pay for mileage and room and board out of pocket with the hopes of maybe getting refunded some of it.
On top of that I've been paying for more and more stuff for work out of pocket with the promise that I will be reimbursed, but there's no telling when or if that will happen. So there's a few k there. Also my work hasn't paid me for May yet because the big boss is upset about the way the sites are being run and has not approved payroll until he finishes his inspection which will take a few weeks.
On top of this, I had a $3k tax bill due which I paid back in April. In may the gummint sent me almost all of it back as a tax refund. I used this money to pay for the aforementioned car. Earlier this month they sent me a notice saying that the refund was an error and now I owe all the money they refunded plus late fees and interest for not paying my taxes on time.
This is all on the tail end of surviving the semester from hell. I can't remember if I mentioned this here but I was in a class that the one entire course was structured around "group work". Well I got stuck with a group that didn't do anything and so I had to do it all by myself. I did the work of five people while holding down a full time job+.
Anyways on the writing front. I have a few chapters of CDE to post and a new Lumen chapter. But I realize those stories arent the kinda thing my core audience cares about. I've been struggling to find the time and energy to actually post anything because even after I finish writing and edits it's still at least an hour of work to format stuff for html and then share them online.

Imagine: the excitement of the hunt, the excitement of a bet, and the opportunity to leave with a good deal. Buying a car at a car auction takes some preparation and research, but the reward is well worth the chance to drive the car at a super-affordable price. On some online auctions, such as A Better Bid, you can get a good model like ford bronco 1964 at a very affordable price.
Buying a car at auction? In person or online, what will you choose - state or public auction? But wait, before you hit the auction or log into your laptop, let's talk about best practices. First, where do these cars come from? And more importantly, how do you ensure that you are making a smart investment? There are some very cool events going on at car auctions where you can bid on cars and get great deals. Some auctions are exclusive to car dealers, but others are open to the public and you can find them all over the country. In fact, there are tons of them in many states. And the best part: you don't even have to leave your home to participate! It's like buying a house without even setting foot in it. So why not give it a try and see what rides you can get!
Are you looking to spice up your online shopping experience? Why not try attending an online auction! Of course, this option may not be for the indecisive or picky shopper, but it's definitely worth a shot. Some auctions even allow you to bring a mechanic to check out the vehicle beforehand, but beware of those that keep the VIN a secret - that's usually a red flag. Add some excitement to your online shopping and give an auction a try! Have you ever wondered how cars end up at auction? It's not always because of a terrible accident or a car's last breath. In fact, some cars are there because rental companies or financial services firms just didn't want them anymore. And, during the pandemic, rental companies were selling off their vehicle fleets in droves. Another reason cars end up at auction is because they were seized or repossessed by banks, the IRS, or other government agencies.
Stepping up to the auction car buying game? You might be wondering how to get into those closed-off auctions. Well, without a dealer license, it's a no-go. But don't get discouraged - there are plenty of public options for you to explore. If you're going for an in-person auction, make sure to do your homework first. Each auction has its own unique rules and caters to different markets.

hi, I saw your post about car shopping? I have a few things I stick to (just had my car totalled recently too, it sucks) I would say 1) know the kind of car you want going in, if you have the time shop for a specific make/model. Always google the reviews of a type of car to see how it holds up over time (esp the year. had a friend almost buy a 2012 nissan that her car dealer "friend" wanted to sell her, all the online reviews said the transmission fails at like 70k miles and guess how many miles were on the car) Also, if you're seeing a lot of one particular make/model on the used market that means people are trying to get rid of that car, so stay away from it. Here I kept seeing a ton of toyota prius and fiat 500's. They might be cheaper because there are so many, but it will cost you in the long run. Toyota is the best for low maintenance and reliability, but they might be harder to find 2) details details details. in the states we have a huge problem of flooded cars (from hurricanes) being brought up north and resold. Ask for detailed maintenance records, be VERY sus of a car originally from super far away popping up near you. Look in the trunk or under the hood for signs of another paint color to make sure it hasn't been totalled before and repainted. I try to look for single owner cars, two prev owners or more is a sign there might be something wrong with the car. I hope this helps, if you have any questions or anything feel free to ask me! unfortunately I know the pain of car shopping well
hi, thank you so much!!! unfortunately i don’t fully have the luxury of being able to pick make and models (used car market in canada is wild rn - the whole car market actually) but that’s a great point about googling the car, i’ll definitely do that before buying anything.
and thank you for the details section, it’s exactly that stuff that i know is important but don’t know (didn’t know now, thank you) how to check. thank you so much again and good luck in your own search if you’re still looking!!

"Somehow we need to persuade him to part with a million dollars..." with Kate and Darcy?
A/N: Thank you so much for the request! This one was a little shorter than I meant for it to be, but hopefully it's still good! 💞💞💞 Darcy and Kate are always a fun pair to write for 😊
I hope y'all enjoy!
Word Count: 1.1k+
“So what are you thinking? Chrome wheels?”
“I mean, that could work. I was actually kind of thinking of those LED lights that go up underneath the car? I’ve seen jacked up trucks with those and I just really like the look of it,” Kate explained, and Darcy raised an eyebrow as she turned to look at her best friend.
“Jacked up trucks? Sounds like a country song,” Darcy quipped.
“I’m almost a hundred percent sure that’s in a country song,” Kate laughed, and Darcy could not help her wide grin as she chuckled along with her.
Currently, Darcy and Kate were looking through vehicles online, examining an online catalogue of vehicles located at their closest dealers.
Since several days ago when Kate had mentioned how nice it would be to get a car after she got her license in a few weeks, Darcy and she had been scheming. Darcy herself had been wanting a car as well, and because they both seemed to be in the market for a vehicle, they agreed to try to find some way to get a car that they could share.
Of course, the car would mostly be for Kate’s benefit because she spent a lot of time running back and forth between the compound and the widow sisters’ place, but Darcy could also use it for the errands that she sometimes had to run.
They had been teaming up together to try to find the perfect vehicle and given Darcy’s calculations on their selected insurance choice and all of the mods that they both wanted to add to it, it was going to be nothing short of a million-dollar venture.
Darcy sighed, leaning back in her chair as she looked at the screen before them.
“We’ve worked up quite the bill with this whole thing,” Darcy stated, and Kate moved a little closer to get a look at the tally. Her jaw slackened as she took in the figure Darcy had displayed on the screen.
“D! A million dollars?!” Kate cried in surprise, and Darcy shook her head, turning to Kate more fully as she eyed her over the top of her glasses.
“Look, I’m not getting cheap insurance. Insurance is a thing in life meant to be splurged on,” Darcy firmly asserted, and Kate shook her head uncertainly as she leaned a little closer around Darcy’s chair to look at the chart that Darcy had created in the midst of their research.
“Yeah, but it looks like most of our expenses are coming from all the extra stuff we want to add to the car…”
“Look, it’s not that big of a deal.”
“Who do we know that has a million dollars just sitting around handy?” Kate questioned and Darcy narrowed her eyes, completely unimpressed with Kate’s obvious oversight. Kate thought it through for just a moment, and instantly, her eyes widened as she came to the obvious answer.
   Tony Stark.
“Kate,” Darcy deadpanned, and Kate shook her head, slight embarrassment written in her features.
“I know, I know, that was a stupid question,” Kate admitted, and Darcy shook her head, waving her hand dismissively to alleviate Kate’s humiliation.
“Nah, it’s all good. But now somehow we need to persuade him to part with a million dollars,” Darcy declared, trailing off as she thought it through, and Kate shrugged.
“We could probably just randomly transfer it out of his account, and he’d never notice,” Kate pointed out.
“Yeah… A million dollars is probably chump change to him,” Darcy acknowledged, nodding despite the fact that neither one of them would seriously do something like that.
Kate was too good-hearted, and Darcy valued her job too much. Granted, Darcy was not the kind to steal anyway, so it was never an option in the first place.
“There was a point in time that was chump change to my mom. Obviously not anymore, though,” Kate pointed out, and Darcy nodded before furrowing her brow, a thought coming to her as Kate brought up her mother and the company.
“You and your mother are on okay-goodish terms again, right?” Darcy questioned, looking at Kate curiously. Her mind was already formulating plans. Kate squinted just a little, uncertain of what exactly to make of Darcy’s question.
   “Yeah?”
“So why aren’t you running her company? Then we could get all the cash we need for our little… business opportunity,” Darcy asked, raising an eyebrow as she looked over at the younger girl. Kate shook her head, a hesitance in her gaze as she took in a breath to explain.
“Well… I wasn’t technically a major stockholder on my own and while I have the rights to my mom’s holdings after she dies, her rights to the business have been put on hiatus for the time being because she’s in prison. And because she’s not dead, I can do anything with it,” Kate explained, and Darcy nodded in acknowledgement, taking in Kate’s reasoning.
“Plus… I didn’t really want to run the family business anyway. It’s just not who I am,” Kate confessed, and Darcy raised an eyebrow.
“What? She didn’t put you through business classes? What were you pursuing as a degree in college?” Darcy questioned, and Kate smiled somewhat sheepishly.
   “Business.”
“Then shouldn’t you know how to run it and work it to your advantage?” Darcy asked, ever the pragmatic sort. Kate moved her head noncommittally.
“Yeah. I mean… I didn’t say that I didn’t know how to run the family business, I just,” Kate spread her lips in a thin line, looking down at her hands as she let out a deep breath.
“There’s some things that are more important than money, y’know?” Kate expressed.
Darcy looked at her for a moment before nodding to her solemnly, eyeing Kate carefully as she felt her chest warm with Kate’s genuine love and kindness.
To be a rich kid, Kate was one of the humblest people in the world and did not ever seem to place much value in money or how much someone had materialistically speaking. She was an extremely grounded person and Darcy loved her for that.
However, that was not going to help them at the moment while they were trying to figure out some way to buy a car for the two of them to share, get insurance for it, and add the bells and whistles that they were dreaming of.
“So we’re back to square one now, I guess,” Kate stated, a note of apology in her tone, and Darcy nodded her head absentmindedly. She was not entirely ready to give up on the Stark idea.
And as yet another idea came to her, she looked at Kate curiously.
“Think we could get away with calling it an Avengers expense?”
Kate just shook her head, and Darcy groaned, letting her chin fall into her hand as she propped her head up with her elbow on the arm of the office chair.
They would figure out something. Eventually.

Expert: Car Dealers Can’t Sell EVs Because Tesla is SO MUCH Easier and Cheaper!
Dr. Know-it-all Knows it all
Tesla has a secret weapon when it comes to buying cars: you can buy a Tesla in 5 minutes online and pay NO dealership "market adjustment" markups! This is why Brandon from Car Questions Answered has found that dealerships can't sell their Ford F150 Lightnings, Mach-e, or other cars(..)
P.S. It seems that buying a car from a dealership is a really expensive and unpleasant process in USA...Looking at the prices of new ICE vehicles in America Tesla Model 3 is not a very expensive car at all...It looks like franchise “stealerships” will be one of the main reasons why legacy automakers will lose the battle against Tesla.
