What Books Have Inspired your Writing?

So many. Too many!!

Specifically for The Fey Touched Trilogy, I could name a handful...

The Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer; Missing parents and faeries.

The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Meade; Vampires, schools, And evil subspecies of vampire.

The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis; Found family, portal fantasy, and multiple realms and societies.

But in general terms? Every book I’ve ever picked up and read has added to my repertoir and inspired my writing. Even books I may not have liked have taught me something. Maybe it was what not to do, but I still learned from them.

So many books have inspired me to write. Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobel Carmody, Crystal Singers series by Anne McCaffrey. The Abhorsen Books by Garth Nix. There’s no way I can list them all.

Important Facts about Samhain from an Irish Celtic Reconstructionist

Pronunciation

SOW-in or SOW-een ~NOT~ Sam-han, Sam-win etc.

Dates

Most reconstructionists celebrate Samhain on Oct 31-Nov 1, however some may choose to celebrate on Gregorian Nov 13-14 as this would match the Julian dates of Oct 31-Nov 1. Some also believe that it was a three day festival spanning Oct 31- Nov 2 on which Nov 2 is specifically devoted to ancestral veneration, but there is no specific evidence of this, only possible extrapolation from more modern practices.

Following the Celtic method of days beginning at sunset, regardless of the specific dates you choose to celebrate on your festivities should begin at sunset and end at sunset.

Importance in the Mythos

Ná Morrighan has a strong connection to this time of year thanks to the story of Cath Dédenach Maige Tuired (The Last Battle of Mag Tuired) in which she is found depicted as the ‘Washing Woman’ (sometimes washing herself in the river and other times washing the bloodied armor of the soldiers that would die that day), on the eve of the battle which is also Samhain. The Dagda approaches her and couples with her (creating the ‘Bed of the Couples’ along the bank of river and granting Dagda her blessing in the battle to come). This encounter seems to over emphasize the liminality of the encounter by taking place during the changing of the year and with the couple each standing with ‘one foot on either bank’ of the river.

She and her sisters (Badb and Macha) then use various forms of magic to rain destruction on their enemies (in the form of fire and blood). After the day is won Morrighan speaks a prophecy that describes what is taken by some to be the end of days and others to be the events which will later lead to the Ulster Cycle.

Beneath the peaceful heavens lies the land. It rests beneath the bowl of the bright sky. The land lies, itself a dish, a cup of honeyed strength, there, for the taking, offering strength to each There it lies, the splendour of the land. The land is like a mead worth the brewing, worth the drinking. It stores for us the gifts of summer even in winter. It protects and armours us, a spear upon a shield Here we can make for ourselves strong places, the fist holding the shield Here we can build safe places, our spear-bristling enclosures. This is where we will turn the earth. This is where we will stay. And here will our children live to the third of three generations Here there will be a forest point of field fences The horn counting of many cows And the encircling of many fields There will be sheltering trees So fodderful of beech mast that the trees themselves will be weary with the weight. It is also mentioned in Echtra Cormaic that on this festival every seven years the high king would host a feast, it was at this time new laws could be enacted. (but it seems that individual Tuathas or possibly kings of the individual providence may have done this for their territories at Lughnasadh).

It seems to be a time considered especially susceptible to (or of) great change as it is the time which the Tuatha de Danann win victory over the Formorians and take control of Ireland, the invasion of Ulster takes place at this time in Táin bo Cúailnge, in Aislinge Óengusa Óengus and his bride-to-be are changed from bird to human and eventually he claims kingship of Brú na Bóinne at this time of year.

Celebration Traditions

Samhain is the beginning of the “dark half” of the year and is widely regarded as the Insular Celtic equivalent of the New Year. The “dark half” of the year was a time for story telling, in fact in this half of the year after dark is considered the only acceptable time to tell stories from the mythological and Ulster cycle (the Fenian cycle being assumed to be no older than the 12th century based on linguistic dating). Traditionally anything that had not been harvested or gathered by the time of this festival was to be left, as it now belonged to the Fae (in some areas specifically the Púca).

This was also an important time for warding off ill luck in the coming year. Large bonfires would be built and as the cattle were driven back into the community from the pastures they would be walked between these bonfires as a method of purification (the reverse custom of Bealtaine where the livestock were walked between the fires on their way out to the summer pastures). Assumed ritualistic slaughter of some of the herd would follow (though this perhaps had the more practical purpose of thinning the herd before the winter and creating enough food for the feasting). In some areas the ashes from these fires would be worn, thrown or spread as a further way to ward off evil.

Homes would be ritualistically protected from the Aos Sí (Fae or ‘Spirits’) through methods such as offerings of food (generally leaving some of the feasting outside for them), carving turnips with scary faces to warn them off (we now tend to do this with gourds), and smoke cleansing the home (in Scottish saining) traditionally with juniper, but perhaps rowan or birch might be an acceptable alternative. It is likely these would be part of the components used in Samhain bonfires as well, for the same reason.

Lastly based on later traditions as well as links in the mythology this is a time where divination practices or those with the ‘second sight’ were regarded to be especially potent.

GILBERT: Don't get up on your high horse with me, Anne Shirley. I cycled all the way from Carmody to tell you something I found out about Diana Barry today.

ANNE: You are a real pill, Gilbert Blythe. What about Diana Barry?

GILBERT: Uh-uh. Not until you spill the beans.

ANNE: You won't say anything to your folks or Jane Andrews or Charlie Sloane.

GILBERT: On my honor.

ANNE: And you promise you won't ever tease me about this.

GILBERT: I wouldn't risk your anger.

ANNE: Alright.

Neve McInthosh as Mrs Harbottle in All Creatures Great and Small. Channel 5

All Creatures Great and Small star says new arrival “ruffles feathers”

Rachel Shenton and Nicholas Ralph spoke exclusively with RadioTimes.com about new arrival Mrs Harbottle, played by Neve McIntosh.

As we head back to the Yorkshire Dales for All Creatures Great and Small season 4, fans can expect a few change-ups in the cast, including the arrival of new character Mrs Harbottle.

Mrs Harbottle is played by Neve McIntosh (Doctor Who), and has been described as the "highly efficient bookkeeper" that Siegfried and James bring in as one of the extra pairs of hands to help around the practice.

However, it seems she will also be stirring things up Skeldale House, as the cast revealed when speaking exclusively with RadioTimes.com.

Helen star Rachel Shenton said: "Certainly Mrs Harbottle’s arrival is one that ruffles feathers really early on. Siegfried meets her at a dance and brings her back unannounced, so nobody knows who she is and it’s a real shock to everybody. And then we're told that she's coming in to restore order and how they manage things."

She continued: "And at first, I think people think that it’s a good idea, and then very quickly we all realise that we kind of like the obscurities of the way that we run it. And if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But even though she brings friction, she also manages to unite them as well, which is really interesting.

"She's just such a brilliant actress and it's a really fun character, so everybody's in for a treat with that."

Meanwhile, Nicholas Ralph, who plays James in the series, spoke about the addition of Richard Carmody, played by James Anthony-Rose (Slow Horses, Pennyworth), who is a studious undergraduate vet student who arrives at Skeldale as part of his placement.

Ralph said: "James thinks 'I'll get a young intern and he'll be a mini me. It'll be absolutely brilliant and I'll take him under my wing. It’ll be fantastic.' But it doesn't go quite as planned. He turns out to be kind of a mini Siegfried and they get on like a house on fire and James feels a bit relegated, and I think even says to Helen at one point: ‘When did I become Tristan?’"

The first trailer for the new season was unveiled last week, and it saw Richard struggling to adapt to countryside living, slipping and falling on what appears to be his first day on the job.

it's been a long time since my last post. Not too long after posting my game updated and I started getting a weird error and I couldn't find a way to fix it for the longest time. About a month ago I managed to figure out the problem and fixed it. After that I was finally able to go into the game without it taking hours to load and before coming back, I decided to get new cc and finish a ton of screenshots.

Anyways this is just an updated version of my map showing my main country and all of the other countries surrounding it along with some mountain ranges and bodies of water.

Some extra info:

-Northland's commonwealths are Karkottaa, The Alban Territories, Erland and Sidsel

-Northland, Erland and Sidsel all speak the same language while both the Alban Territories and Karkottaa speak their own separate languages

-Erroll's a monarchy and their commonwealth consist of Carmody and New Garland

-Enkai is a monarchy and doesn't have a commonwealth

-both Erroll and Enkai are two of Northland's closest allies

The Lighthouse shows up everywhere! From the painting Mary gifts Stede as an anniversary present (which he keeps in his cabin), to the dreary looming specter of a literal lighthouse at the Bonnet wedding (most depressing wedding ever?),   to the genius plan devised by Blackbeard and Stede in episode 4 that turns a ship into a lighthouse!

Ed carries with him a scrap of red fabric (likely silk given its origin story) squirreled away in his pocket. We learn in episode 5 that it was given to him by his mother, who in turn got it from “The Carmody Estate” which we can infer is the estate of a wealthy family where she works. 

She tells young Edward that the estate is full of fine things like this, but that people “like them” aren't meant to have fine things. This experience of wealth inequality in childhood most definitely influenced his later career as a pirate, but even after he is the most feared pirate on the seven seas he still feels the desire to prove his worth and belonging to the world of nobility. 

When Stede sees Ed holding the scrap of fabric he’s held onto for so long, Stede encourages him to wear it openly! “oh it’s just a tatty old thing” Ed says about the fabric, and he’s not just talking about the physical object. No, he’s referring to his dreams, desires, and heart. “sometimes, the old things are the best. they just need a little care” Stede replies as he tenderly arranges it into a pocket square that Ed wears over his literal heart! This is peak romance folks! 

3) The Auxiliary Wardrobe

Speaking of fancying a fine fabric, let’s talk about the auxiliary wardrobe!

Stede Bonnet has known Ed for about 5 minutes before he sees an affection for fine things in him, and views it as something they have in common! He invites Ed into the physical representation of his dandy nature, a closet! but not just any closet (although regular closets are a time honored symbol for hidden queerness), Stede invites Ed into a walk in closet that can only be accessed by triggering a fake wall! We literally get to see two queer men in a closet admiring a collection of fine clothing, Stede even starts pulling things off the racks for Ed to try on! Truly the most fabulous display of bringing someone into your private world that I’ve seen on screen in ages! 

4) The Kraken

This one is a little heavier than the others, but it looms over Ed/Blackbeard for the whole show. The Kraken is introduced as a legendary monster that Edward witnessed kill his father. It’s the only thing that Blackbeard fears, we are told. We later learn that the Kraken is a manifestation of guilt and fear stemming from Edward’s youth when he strangled his own father (papa teach deserved it a little bit though). 

The Kraken represents the darker impulses of Edward Teach, it is the use of violence that he compartmentalizes. It’s no coincidence that when Ed embraces the darkness and violence at the end of season 1 as a coping mechanism, he dons makeup and says “I am the Kraken”. He is embracing the monster within that he fears. (One day I will write a whole essay about the queer monstrosity connections that can be made here too, lots of Black Sails and del toro will be referenced)

5) The Ring   

this one is a little sneakier- it’s never acknowledged by any of the characters in the show, but in every scene Izzy Hands is in, he is wearing a ring on his tie! Coincidence? I think not! this wardrobe choice could symbolize faithfulness, commitment, and monogamy as character traits. 

But who is Izzy Hands committed to? Could it be an off screen partner settled in a seaside town somewhere? Could it be a lost love from his tragic backstory? (it would explain his commitment to the all black aesthetic- mayhaps he is the Carribean’s own Queen Victoria in perpetual mourning dress) Could it be a commitment to the life of piracy? or maybe it hints at the deep bond shared by him and his captain. 

Maybe Stede Bonnet is a homewrecker! One is sure- Con O’Neill himself has acknowledged that it is something

Arthur: Yes. Miss Grimshaw?

Susan: Mr. Matthews gave me a message for you, he said when it was convenient to head into Emerald Ranch. He’s looking at a few business things there.

Arthur: Okay.

Susan:  Oh, he’ll find something, too, he always does. Well, you be well now, Mr. Morgan.

Arthur: I’m always well, Miss Grimshaw.

[Video cuts to Arthur riding up to Emerald Ranch. [Hosea and Seamus are sitting outside a barn when Arthur walks up to them.]

Hosea: That’s an interesting way of putting it, Seamus.

Seamus: Oh no doubt, I do interesting very well. It’s trusting I don’t do so well.

Hosea: Please… I know how to work with good people, Seamus, and I work in the right way.

Seamus: Well, they all say that… I never met an idiot that called himself one.

Hosea: Very true… in that case, I’m an idiot. But… I know how to get things done efficiently. Look at me, why would I lie about this?

[Arthur approaches]

Hosea: Arthur. This is Seamus… he’s our new partner.

Seamus: I ain’t no such thing.

Hosea: Prospective new partner if he likes us.

Seamus: Liking ain’t the problem… trusting is, as I said. Keep your voices down… I don’t want my boss hearing. This is a side line.

Hosea: Course. Look at us, honest as the day is long.

Seamus: Exactly.

Hosea: I tell you what, let us prove ourselves.

Arthur: Prove ourselves? To this clown? What you talking about?

Seamus: Good day, Hosea, good luck with your business dealings.

Hosea: Listen, he’s rough and ready and quick with his tongue, but I swear, you can trust him, and trust me.

Seamus: I’m an old man.

Hosea: You’re not old, Seamus.

Seamus: I’m old enough… and you know why I ain’t dead?

Hosea: You don’t trust idiots.

Seamus: Exactly.

Hosea: We’re not idiots… let us prove it to you.

Seamus: Okay… I tell you what…

Hosea: (motioning to Arthur, who has sat down, to come over) Arthur!

Seamus: Old Bob Crawford and his boys… just bought a beautiful stolen stage coach from upstate. It’s in their barn. Now you go get that… and then we can work together.

Hosea: Who’s old Bob Crawford?

Seamus: An acquaintance of mine.

Hosea: So you want us to take out your competition?

Seamus: Well, he-he’s not just an acquaintance but a cousin… by marriage. I also want to see if you boys got what it takes. Now, you survive that…

Hosea: Where is he?

Seamus: He’s in a farmhouse just northwest of here, called Carmody Dell. It’s just up the train tracks as you’re heading up towards Fort Wallace. There’s also some money in that house, but that’s your business, not mine, but don’t kill nobody. Folks know we ain’t intimate no more and they’ll know it was me.

Hosea: But, you’re fine with us robbing your cousin?

Seamus: By marriage… and yes, I’d love it.

Hosea: You heard the man, let’s go rob his cousin.

Seamus: By marriage.

[They get on their horses.]

Arthur: Really?

Hosea: Really. Lead the way. He said the place is just northwest of here.

Arthur: Me?

Hosea: You’re the one who’s been out gallivanting around here.

Arthur: That’s what you call it. Clearly you’ve recovered from your bear encounter.

Hosea: Could have played that better, couldn’t you?

Arthur: Thought you wanted me here to show some strong arm? That’s usually how it goes.

Hosea: Yes, but… you know how this works.

Arthur: C’mon, Hosea. That feller’s a joke.

Hosea: And that’s why he’s perfect. He won’t cause us any problems. A safe spot to fence wagons and coaches, that’s easy money for us.

Arthur: I guess you’re right.

Hosea: Come on, it’s not like he’s asking us to rob a bank. If the two of us can’t steal a stagecoach from Seamus’ old crooked cousin by marriage, we should hang up our hats now.

=Emerald Ranch?=

Arthur: So what’s the story with that Emerald Ranch? You find out anything else?

Hosea: A little. Owner’s a nasty type, by all accounts. Seamus is sure scared of him.

Arthur: That’s not saying much.

Hosea: Something strange about the place. Used to be a saloon there, general store. Now it’s all closed up, but they seem to have money.

Arthur: Sounds worth a look around.

Hosea: For sure… Seamus also mentioned the rancher’s daughter a couple of times, how he used to see her around all the time but now she never leaves the house. Probably just sweet on her.

Arthur: That what you call finding out a little?

Hosea: Once he opens up, seems Seamus does like to talk.

Arthur: Hopefully not too much.

=How are you feeling about things?=

Arthur: How you feeling about things now?

Hosea: What things?

Arthur: This place, the gang… been here a few weeks now.

Hosea: Good, I think. Better.

Arthur: I figured more folks would have cut and run on us, given everything that happened.

Hosea: Like Dutch always says, a lone wolf don’t last long out on the plains.

Arthur: He does like to trot that one out.

Hosea: People see that, especially when they get a few years on them. Even someone like Micah. 

Arthur: There’s a couple of folks, I wish, had cut and run.

Hosea: Maybe they’d say the same about you.

[The two ride until they see the house]

Hosea: That must be the place up ahead. We should go on foot from here. Let's see what we’re dealing with, come on. [...] There’s the house. I see the barn in the back, stagecoach has to be in there. [...] Okay, let’s take a quick look at the place…

=Night=

Arthur: See anyone?

Hosea: Nope. Okay… I reckon we can do it now. Sneak in, I’ll get the coach, you can try the house. Or… wait until morning, when I’ll head over… distract them by putting on a little show… while you sneak into the house, find what you can, and… then get the stagecoach. What do you think?

=Night wait for Day=

Arthur: Let’s wait.

[The next morning]

Hosea: Okay… let’s get on with this, Mr. Morgan.

Arthur: Yes.

Hosea: Let me head up there and make a fool of myself.

Arthur: With pleasure.

Hosea: Just don’t get caught… because it’s me they’ll shoot first.

=Day wait for Night=

Hosea: Okay, let’s take a quick look at the place…

Arthur: Anyone around?

Hosea: Yes. Okay… I reckon we can do it now. I’ll head over, distract ‘em by putting on a little show while you sneak into the house, find what you can… then get the stagecoach. Or… wait until nightfall. Sneak in, then I’ll get the coach. You can try the house. What do you think?

Arthur: Let’s wait.

[Night falls]

Hosea: Okay, let’s go.

Arthur: Sure.

Hosea: You go into the house… I’ll go find this wagon.

[He goes to the house to distract its inhabitants. Arthur, meanwhile, is robbing everything that he can find.]

Hosea: My good man… my good young man. Fair thee well! Fair thee well. (chuckles) Is your father home, son?

Junior: Sure is.

Hosea: Get him down here, please, get him down here.

Junior: Get lost, mister.

Hosea: I was lost! For many years, I was lost. Many years. Now I’m not. You know what? [Crawford walks out] Oh, here he is, are you the father of the house?

Crawford: Sure.

Hosea: Pleasure to meet you. I was just chatting with junior here a bit.

Crawford: You selling something, partner?

I’m not selling, I’m giving it away! (CHECK THIS) I was just telling, uh… uh, y-your, junior, what’s your name son?

Junior: Robert Crawford the third, sir. 

Hosea: The… oh?

Hosea: Pleasure to meet you. Both of yous, uh… My name… my name is… now don’t… tell no one because in New York, I’m kind of famous. I once preformed on Broadway… now that’s not important or relevant, I have been saved! I have been found! Oh, no I-I-I saw it in your eyes. You think I’m a nut! Do you think I’m a nut, Bob Crawford the Third?

Junior: I ain’t interested in no religious talk.

Hosea: I’m not a religious man. Respects them as has it, but I got something better. Way better than church. And twice as useful. Free! Spinal… alignment.

Crawford: What?

Hosea: Spinal… alignment! The Lord God Almighty, or who, whomever built us, put our brains in here but our souls is in our backs. You sir, y-your back looks kind of tricky and complicated. 

Crawford: Sure.

Hosea: I can fix that for you. Just ten or, fifteen sessions.

Crawford: Whiskey suits me fine sir.

Hosea: Whiskey? It’s whiskey is, is causing the problems! [...] You ever meet a Scot who didn’t hobble in old age? But the English stand tall, sir… Gin! They drink gin. And what is gin made with? Junipers… And what does the juniper do? Creates movement in the spine… Whereas your whiskey, made with grain as it is, leaves the spine brittle. Hence your hobbling Jock. Please… lay down here a little. It won’t take long. [...]  I was worse than you, sir. I was broken… 

(NOTE: In the video the second angle made the distraction shorter somehow so I went back and got the other bad angle for the rest of the distraction.

Hosea: Look at me now… I dance every night. Women adore me. I got the magic. Seriously, it’s all about the spine. We think our brains is in our heads, but they are in our backs too. Ooh… I can tell you’re a very wise man, but the troubles, they’re killing you…

Crawford: That’s the spot.

Hosea: Oh, I… I know it is… Gimme a minute, sir… you’ll have women again. Women and song and dancing… and dancing, do you like dancing?

Crawford: I’ve never been a dancing man, no.

Hosea: Well, that explains everything… that explains it! Uh, give me a minute, sir! Don’t let those troubles kill ya! Is that better? Just a bit?

Crawford: Yeah… yeah, it’s a… it’s a little bit better!

Hosea: This session has been free but perhaps, I might call again?

Crawford: How much’ll it cost me?

Hosea: I’m offering you virility and you’re asking me about money, sir?

Crawford: I ain’t made of money, mister…

Hosea: My rates are reasonable… have a think about it. I’ll be around this way next week. Goodbye, gentlemen!

Hosea: Get on, dear boy.

Junior: (runs out of the house) Pa, pa… pa, there’s a problem. Pa, there’s a problem. My chest was robbed!

Crawford: (walks out to see the two on the stagecoach) You bastards, you bastards! Junior, get the gun!

Hosea: Damn it, they’re onto us! [...] Damn it, Arthur, you should have been more careful.

Arthur: Yeah, sorry, I must have left a chest open.

Hosea: So what were you able to lift from the house?

Arthur: Found some money stashed away. Must be a few hundred. Not too bad.

Hosea: Not bad at all.

=Day - Don’t make it into the house=

Hosea: You done? Anything good in there?

Arthur: Er, I didn’t actually make it inside in the end, was too busy watching your show.

Hosea: Christ, Arthur. Well too late now, let’s just grab the stagecoach and go then. (unsubtitled)  Come on, let’s get this thing moving!

Hosea: (unsubtitled)  I think we’re going the wrong way here [...] Nicely done, we got everything we needed.

Arthur: And I’m pretty sure they never even knew I was there

Hosea: Best way, less problems the better right now. Just need to get back to Seamus in one piece and it’s a good day’s work.

Hosea: So what were you able to lift from the house?

Arthur: Er, I didn’t actually make it inside in the end, was too busy watching your show.

Hosea: What? I was supposed to be distracting them, not you!

Arthur: What can I say? You ain’t lost it yet.

Hosea: Maybe take a peek through the windows before you go in, make sure it’s all quiet.

[The video then fast forwards through Arthur robbing the house]

Hosea: Get on, dear boy.

[Arthur puts a knife to a sleeping Bob Crawford’s throat then covers his mouth with his other hand]

Arthur: Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh… (he removes his hand when Crawford stops making noise) Now where’s the money?

Crawford: Ain’t got no money, mister.

[Arthur punches him]

Arthur: Now somehow I don’t believe you. Where is it?

Crawford: In the chimney.

[Arthur knocks Crawford out]

Hosea: Nicely done, we got everything we needed.

Arthur: One of them spotted me, but he ain’t going nowhere for a while.

Hosea: Dammit, Arthur. Okay, well, let’s just get back to Emerald Ranch and finish things up.

Hosea: So what were you able to lift from the house?

Arthur: A few bits and pieces, nothing too fancy.

Hosea: Well we need anything we can get right now.

Seamus: How was it?

Hosea: Fine… nice people.

Seamus: Park that thing in here… quickly. Nice work, Hosea.

Hosea: It was mostly Arthur. Like I said, coarse, but competent.

[Seamus pays for the robbery.]

Seamus: Here.

Hosea: Thank you.

Seamus: If you find any other coaches that need selling… I’ll see what I can offer you for them. But discreet, you know?

Hosea: Of course.

Seamus: Goodbye, gentlemen.

Hosea: I’m heading back to camp, I think. You coming?

Arthur: No, I’ll catch up with you later.

Hosea: Okay, stay out of trouble.

Speaking of freaks, I finished The Mist yesterday, and Mrs. Carmody was my favorite character hands down.

She reminds me of my best friend, who is coincidentally the person who recommended the story to me.

I like that the ending was ambiguous because I think she was probably right. It’s the paranormal equivalent of climate change, and Mrs. Carmody is the expert. But they’re literally Chicken Littling her. (that witch… that cunt.) The whole time I was thinking, This scary occult shit is literally her bag. She probably knows what she’s talking about.

13 - Describe your writing style.

-Sweats- uhhhhhhhh great question lmao

Usually third person past tense, ers on the side of too omnipotent without being third person omnipotent causing perspective issues, heavy on character action where I have to focus on adding prose and thought...

Overall though, after editing, when I get it right, I think it's pretty good! Very wordy though, but I love being wordy. Within reason. I have to tone this down sometimes.

This description is very basic because I have a lot of trouble distinguishing "writing styles" that aren't drastically different-- if I'm not trying to compare Shakespeare to Rick Riordan to Isobelle Carmody, I don't think I can really tell all that well ^-^'

19 - Do you plan out your projects? If yes, to what level? How well do you stick to your plans?

I do plan... meticulously... to a fault even...

As in, I started writing Shifting Phases more than four years after starting to plan it lol

First, I start with a very broad, general idea.

Fight scene between A and B, A wins, both get hurt. Triumphant feeling*.

And then I add more detail... and add more detail until I have a scene summary of some description.

A and B get into a fistfight, some dialogue, the stakes, they beat the shit out of each other x and y ways, and when they're on their last legs, A lands an amazing, winning punch when B opens themself up with a poorly planned attack. With B knocked out, A is triumphant and extremely relieved, but they feel guilt for B because they also couldn't afford to lose. A, if in B's position wouldn't've wanted to lose either, so they will help B back up and take them back to <base>.

And from there, I write the actual Scene, which is made fairly easy by the previous work.

I guess Shifting Phases is taking so long because it's my first big project, and thus the first time I have planned anything like this. But yeah, I use this method to plan out short snippets, like with the WiJ 2022 snippets, or BTHB, or any other prompts I recieve.

Ah, speak of which, I have forgotten to link one in the SP masterpost... J shall rectify this issue.

Anyway, I think the biggest, most time consuming issue that ai face with this method is "oh fuck, what happens now, how do i tie these separate things together??"

And then I spend the next year brainrotting into my friends' DMs, servers, and into a doc lol

The most important part of the planning process is just talking about it, even with yourself, so that you can turn things around in your head and reason things out and keep track of it all so the brain fog can't fuck with you as easily.

i love your writing. if you dont mind me asking whats inspired you as a writer? im struggling in my own work because of a lack of formal education and its hard to want to keep writing sometimes. you dont have to answer if it makes you uncomfortable or anything!

i mostly find inspo through reading! books, poetry, other fics. i am incredibly lucky to have had a wonderful education that exposed me to a lot of different published authors and styles, so can't speak to your experience, but my advice is just that: read, if u can, as widely as u can. read good books, read bad books, read great books! know what u like and what u would like to be! some of my favourite authors who have definitely influenced me and my style are natasha pulley, mary oliver, mary renault, celine kiernan, isobelle carmody, jeff vandermeer, louisa may alcott, erin morgenstern, craig silvey, and erich maria remarque. and my ao3 bookmarks are chock full of the fics and authors that have had the deepest impact on me. when i write... i try to write the way reading them makes me feel, i guess. i know sometimes reading something incredible can make u feel a bit shitty bc it can seem like u will never measure up... but that's ok. all i do is try! i'm happy with where i am in my writing right now but i know i will be better one day, and i already know i'm better than where i've been. it's trite to say it but practice does make perfect, and fic is the perfect space to do that bc there's no stakes, no judgement if u don't want there to be. i'm sorry ur struggling in ur own writing journey but i hope this helps? and also, it's ALWAYS ok to take a break too. whatever is best for u, right now xo

Her cousin lives there and Mrs. Spencer has visited here and knows all about it. So Matthew and I have talked it over off and on ever since. We thought we’d get a boy. Matthew is getting up in years, you know—he’s sixty—and he isn’t so spry as he once was. His heart troubles him a good deal. And you know how desperate hard it’s got to be to get hired help. There’s never anybody to be had but those stupid, half-grown little French boys; and as soon as you do get one broke into your ways and taught something he’s up and off to the lobster canneries or the States. At first Matthew suggested getting a Home boy. But I said ‘no’ flat to that. ‘They may be all right—I’m not saying they’re not—but no London street Arabs for me,’ I said. ‘Give me a native born at least. There’ll be a risk, no matter who we get. But I’ll feel easier in my mind and sleep sounder at nights if we get a born Canadian.’ So in the end we decided to ask Mrs. Spencer to pick us out one when she went over to get her little girl. We heard last week she was going, so we sent her word by Richard Spencer’s folks at Carmody to bring us a smart, likely boy of about ten or eleven. We decided that would be the best age—old enough to be of some use in doing chores right off and young enough to be trained up proper. We mean to give him a good home and schooling. We had a telegram from Mrs. Alexander Spencer today—the mail-man brought it from the station—saying they were coming on the five-thirty train tonight. So Matthew went to Bright River to meet him. Of course she goes on to White Sands station herself..Mrs. Rachel prided herself on always speaking her mind; she proceeded to speak it now, having adjusted her mental attitude to this amazing piece of news.“Well, Marilla, I’ll just tell you plain that I think you’re doing a mighty foolish thing—a risky thing, that’s what. You don’t know what you’re getting. You’re bringing a strange child into your house and home and you don’t know a single thing about him nor what his disposition is like nor what sort of parents he had nor how he’s likely to turn out. Why, it was only last week I read in the paper how a man and his wife up west of the Island took a boy out of an orphan asylum and he set fire to the house at night—set it ON PURPOSE, Marilla—and nearly burnt them to a crisp in their beds. There’s risks in people’s having children of their own if it comes to that—they don’t always turn out well. And then Nova Scotia is right close to the Island. It isn’t as if we were getting him from England or the States. He can’t be much different from ourselves.”

“Well, I hope it will turn out all right,” said Mrs. Rachel in a tone that plainly indicated her painful doubts. “Only don’t say I didn’t warn you if he burns Green Gables down or puts strychnine in the well—I heard of a case over in New Brunswick where an orphan asylum child did that and the whole family died in fearful agonies. Only, it was a girl in that instance.”

concept: you walk into a large mall. you seem to have entered through the food court, because you are surrounded by a variety of restaurants, including a sbarro and a pretzel place. you decide you’re not hungry and go somewhere else in the mall. however, restaurants line the halls of the mall. instead of a hot topic or something similar, there is a smoothie place. even the kiosks are food stands. you end up at an anchor store that would usually be a sears or a jcpenney. it’s a ruby tuesday. you are so surprised you check the directory. nothing but restaurants all the way down. then, you look where it says the mall’s name.

it’s called the supreme food court.
