final designs for da three nars! (well two, virgils had his for months now)
Tumblr media
cecil (red) n jarvis (yellow) lookin drippeddddd skfjsjfjsjf
for some lore n more oz rambling they are under the cut!:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ALRIGHT LESGO
Cecil:
Cecil is the fully human Narrator. (in the sense, the one who got his third swimming pool), he is a retired VA whos enjoying his life post tspud and is just overal chillin(tm)
The two new narrators are basically to cover the whole ground of narrater interpretations. (ie. some guy in his room recording, a guy in his room speaking but digital, and a fully digital entity)
so this is the one that is just a guy who voices in the game!
(this isnt meant to be kevan brighting, think of his source is the og game, but with the addition of the extra content(the ads, the raphael parable, the stuff on the dev logs, announcement videos, etc from crows crows crows as canon)
pronouns are he/him.
hes a cis male whos pan
Virgil:
THE OG, MY OG GUY
Virgil is the half digital, half human Narrator. He used to be a regular office worker before being shoved into a computer and thus, becoming the voice for the Parable
His source follows TSPUD, my au La Vie En Jaune, (which you can read more of here!), all the art ive done with him on this blog, and the other things the narrator has been in (ie. dota 2, dungeons, audiobooks etc)
However, after Stanley and the Narrator find each other and break past the hard coded locks of the pARable, they end up in a more lighter version of the parable, more akin to a world the narrator, stanley, and lynne can pop in and out of. while also having more control and hold on themselves and the world.
the narrator is the first one to pop out of the parable, thanks to character!oz (my sona and the one that exists in this blog)
once the narrator gets a better handle at the real world, stanley and lynne follow.
here, hes a guy whos lived the parable and become a new person when coming back out.
He can hop between digital areas and the real world. which is how he is still able to do stuff as the narrator for dota, and work for other projects like dungeons and the multi media videos on yt.
his pronouns are he/they
he is a demiboy who is demisexual and omnisexual
Jarvis:
Jarvis is the fully digital Narrator. He is the one who was created in the Parable as a string of code turned AI.
His source and canon is just TSP, TSPUD, the demo, and the half life mod. He's experienced everything in the games a thousand times over and more.
Basically, hes the guy who pops between being just a voice or an ai with a model that follows stanley around the parable. he has control over the parable (to an extent ie. timekeeper and the developers) and is the one who wrote the story itself.
There is not much more to say about him really ajdjahf but despite the design and context, he isnt that much different from virgil
hes just more defensive, and more lost with living irl.
his pronouns are he/they/it
he is a non binary (smth smth "well, i dont associate with being either a male or female, i am still a binary entity. i am made of ones and zeros, stanley. so while my gender is non binary, my code is.") he is a pansexual demisexual
as of now, in an au idk what to call of atm (maybe just the three narry au) they are all living in the real world.
virgil popped into real life expecting to appear in character!oz's house but landed in cecils
meanwhile, jarvis got suddenly plopped into the real world. he doesnt know how to pop off but he doesnt miss it all too much
misses his stanley a bit.
The Diary of a Nobody (BBC, 1964)
"In the evening, Cummings unexpectedly dropped in to show me a meerschaum pipe he had won in a raffle in the city and told me to handle it carefully, as it would spoil the colouring if the hand was moist. He said he would not stay, as he did not care much for the smell of paint, and fell over the scraper as he went out. Must get the scraper removed - or else I shall get into a scrape. I don't often make jokes."
The Boer War (1899-1902)
If the 1897 Diamond Jubilee is seen as the zenith of the British Empire, the Boer War is arguably the start of its collapse.
There are two conflicts with the name "Boer War", of which the second is by far the better known.
"Boer" is Afrikaans for farmer. The two wars are known as "the Freedom Wars" in the Afrikaans language and "the South African War" in the country itself.
More specifically, the Boers were Dutch farmers who emigrated from the Dutch and then British-controlled Cape Colony north and east into the Transvaal region that is now north-east South Africa, to get away from what they saw as an oppressive government. As well as the fact that the British abolished slavery, which they wanted to keep. So yeah. They were more specifically known as "Trekboers" or travelling farmers. Trek is of course where we get the term Star Trek from.
The first conflict from 1880-1881 started after a farmer refused to pay an illegally inflated tax, had his wagon seized - and his friends then assaulted the auction.
The Boers, better equipped, better trained and far more experienced at shooting than their British opponents, managed to defeat the latter in three major engagements. Unwilling to become engaged in a major conflict, London negotiated a peace deal that gave the South African Republic effectively full control over internal affairs, although the British retained control of external relations. This was the first time the British had lost a war to rebels since the American War of Independence.
Then gold was found in the region and an influx of immigrants, mostly British, turned up, seeking their fortune. Johannesburg emerged as a major community overnight. This caused a lot of tensions, even more so when the government in Praetoria (the SAR capital) denied the 'uitlanders' civil rights.
In 1896, Cape Colony Prime Minister Cecil Rhodes authorised Leander Starr Jameson to conduct a raid into the territory with the aim of triggering a revolution. The raid was badly botched, failed and caused massive embarrassment to the British government, especially when Kaiser Wilhelm II sent a congratulatory telegram to the SAR government... and telegrams showing Rhodes' involvement were found. Jameson, while lionised in the press, spent 15 months in Holloway for the raid.
Shortly after this, the Second Matabele War saw the British have to deal with an uprising by the Ndebele and Shona peoples in what is now Zimbabwe. They defeated it, but with many losses on both sides.
Tensions between the British and the Boers continued to grow after the Jameson Raid; the uitlanders did not see their rights improve, the Boers mistreated the African population, and a lot of the British establishment thought it would be an easy victory. The generals, for their part, did not.
The SAR had acquired high quality weaponry from Germany and France, including bolt-action Mauser rifles. The British Army for its part was in dire need of reform.
The war broke out in 1899 after an ultimatum from SAR leader Paul Kruger for the British to withdraw their forces from the border. The SAR had allied with the Orange Free State by this point.
The Boers had formed civilian militias called "commandos". They launched an invasion of the Natal and Cape Colony, soon putting British garrisons under siege. One notable such siege was at Mafeking, where the British commander was one Robert Baden-Powell, whose use of scouting, along the deception to make his defences look better than they were allowed his force to hold out for 217 days until relieved. He would later use his experience in scouting to form, well, the Scouting Movement.
After a series of major reverses, it was clear the British were going to need to send major reinforcements, recruiting a lot of volunteers - the biggest overseas force Britain had sent to date. They also removed their local commanders and put new ones in.
The sieges were lifted and Praetoria was captured on 5 June 1900 - at which point the Boers (along with foreign volunteers) moved to guerilla warfare, something that they were very adept at, in stark contrast to the British. However, harassment is not the same as taking and holding ground.
Both forces tried to minimise the involvement of people of colour due to fear of what would happen if they armed Africans, but personnel shortages meant they ended up being involved anyway, usually in supporting roles. Mahatma Gandhi, who was a civil rights activist there, formed a corps of volunteer stretcher bearers from the Indian population.
Realising that they were only controlling the territory that they were physically in, the British changed their tactics.
Firstly, they built fortified blockhouses and armoured trains to control their supply routes.
Secondly, the British adopted a "scorched earth" policy; they rounded up Boer and African civilians, placing them in concentration camps, while also systematically destroying farms, crops etc. that the Boer forces could use to supply themselves.
The Spanish had used concentration camps in Cuba earlier in the 19th century, but this was a much wider use. With little or no soap, along with dirty water, disease swept through the overcrowded camps, with over 46,000 dying in them, including a quarter of the Boers in them - African numbers interned were not properly counted. Emily Hobhouse exposed the horrific conditions, and the matter was taken up by domestic politicians. A government commission led by Millicent Fawcett then recommended major improvements, which were largely implemented and brought down the death rate, but the damage had been done by this point.
The brutal tactics were sadly effective; the Boers were beginning to give up. However, the British themselves were running out of time and money, so gave them a generous settlement in the 1902 Treaty of Vereeniging; while the SAR and Orange Free State would be absorbed into the British Empire, Dutch could be used in schools and courts, there would be a general amnesty and reconstruction aid would be given.
Self-government was also promised and granted; it was decided that the issue of black enfranchisement would not be discussed until then - and full enfranchisement would not come until 1993.
The war was controversial in the UK; it was opposed by the opposition Liberal Party. Lord Salisbury called a snap election in 1900 and won with a slightly reduced majority. The next election in 1906 was a massive defeat for them though.
The conflict also exposed the dire state of British public health - with up to 40% of volunteers for the war being rejected on health grounds. This spurred the creation of the National Insurance system.
Arthur Conan Doyle volunteered for military service in the conflict; but was turned down due to his age. Instead, he served for three months in a field hospital and then wrote two books about the conflict. The second one, defending Britain's involvement in the war, was felt by Doyle to be the work that got him his knighthood in 1902.
The war was also notable for one journalist who after being captured by the South Africans, managed to escape from behind enemy lines, using the publicity to get into Parliament on his second attempt. His name was Winston Churchill.
At 2022 values, the war cost Britain over £19.9 billion.
They had also had 26,092 soldiers killed to the Boers 6,189. As with all wars at this time, disease was the biggest killer.
WTNV quick rundown - 145 - The Veterans
Featuring the voice of Mark Gagliardi as as John Peters (you know, the farmer?)!
Read the rest of my rundowns here, including live show and novel rundowns.
Fake it till you make it. Mic it till you like it. Book it till you look it. Welcome to Night Vale.
More Veterans from the Blood/Space War have arrived, landing in John Peters (you know, the farmer?) field. This includes John's brother, James Peters as well as Admiral Junior Blais, Sergeant Dan Christensen and his twin brother Drew. They say that the galaxy is under threat by the ruthless Polonian armies of Star System Lacaille 9352 and that's what they're fighting the war about.
The Polonian's are three times the size of humans with hundreds of sharp teeth up and down their boneless limbs. They have only one eye which gives them bad depth perception but it also shoots lazers. They have already completely destroyed the planet of a species which only speaks via dance - two members of which accompany the human veterans and are allies to them in the war.
There is an extremely lackluster attempt at supporting the financial, emotional and physical burden these veterans carry.
Senior Strategic Advisor Jameson Archibald at the Intergalactic Military Headquarters admits that he still has no idea what the Blood/Space war is about and lost all the money he kept getting from the government and not using in an intergalatic war in a faulty tech start up. Donations from the Bake Sale and Sheriff's Secret Police are received gratefully but since the Polonian's are so close he decides that it's probably too late. He then rolls up a $100 and eats it like a Snickers bar.
The Polonian ships are now visible in the sky. Harrison Kip sends Cecil and e-mail stating that in 1993 he found crashed ships that look exactly like the ones in the sky which had corpses of creatures matching the Polonian's in them whilst out on an unrelated exhibition. He was then reprogrammed to forget it but seeing them has recovered some of the memories and he feels he can recover the rest. However, he is then reprogrammed again and forgets it all. Cecil is then also reprogrammed for talking about it.
Luckily it seems the army of Polonian ships simply vanishes anyway. There one moment, gone the next.
Weather: “No Good Day” by Windows to Sky
Dan and Drew were born in 1912, both became tax accountants, had wives and children, donated to the Old NV opera house and were avid sports fans - even starting the first ever semi-pro Sand Hockey league. Dan passed away in 1994 due to liver cancer and Drew died of a heart attack a week later. Despite this both men when they return look to be in their late 20's and are entirely unable to reconnect with their middle-aged grandchildren or get jobs due to being legally dead.
Junior Blais, who is 50, says he was born in 2022 (this episode was written in 2019) to Oliver and Linda Blais both of who say they don't plan on having children making him either an accident or dramatic change of heart. He was badly wounded and has many 3rd degree burns that require grafts but clearance for them in NV involves getting clearance in Red Mesa and it's taking forever.
Jim Peters was honourable discharged from service and is decorated with many chevrons and medals. John Peters tells us that his brother used to play catch with him and show him where to get discounts on sweets and drinks. John is now 60 and was only 15 when his brother left, Jim is 22. John wants his brother to stay but Jim says that The General has a plan that will work and that they need him. John makes an attempt to make him stay but knows it won't work. Jim dons his space suit and leaves, already haggard with the horrors of war.
Meanwhile the NV Scorpions, the wheelchair basketball team that Janice is captain of, won their semi-final game against Cactus Park HS. They will playing Pine Cliff Saturday afternoon. City Council says that win or lose they will hold a parade next Tuesday for the team which will feature a celebrity appearance by Lee Marvin who is turning 30 that week.
A large chunk of the moon is destroyed by the Polonians but City Council just plans to buy a new one.
Reprogramming is done by men in camo-suits using some kind of metal hat full of wires and such.
Stay tuned next for simultaneous panic and relief as you realize all of your emails are gone.  Good night , Night Vale. Good night.
Proverb: Develop your chi. Really work that chi hard. Get six-pack chi. Totally swole with chi. Roll up those sleeves and welcome people to the chi show.
Some Project Nitro things:
Interdimensional space program (currently) run by all government bodies in the interdimensional plane (like the astral plane but it houses all 42 dimensions instead of just being some kind of mind link)
Started as a side project of IRIS and DC Enterprises (formally known as The League of Graceful Mechanics and The Society of the Dutiful Spark respectfully) to further study said dimensional plane
(they found all 42 dimensions, they just want to explore each individual dimension)
They plan on using T-D3 as fuel (its capable of both nuclear fusion and fission, though it depends on what they need)
I mean IRIS made it so Nitro (the company they and DC Enterprises made specifically for interdimensional travel, kinda like the International Space Station) doesn't have to ask to use it
When I said that Toast sr. had access to T-D3 when he worked for DC, this is what I was talking about
It initially failed and it wasn't until recently that they tried again (technology had to catch up to what they wanted to do)
As Gavin reached out to Jameson about his pub, Nitro reached out to Ghost jr. for help building the ship (he hasn't accepted the offer yet)
Are probably the reason why Cecil and Ghost end up in each other's dimensions
Cecil Rhodes & De Beers: Genocide Diamonds
Cecil Rhodes & De Beers: Genocide Diamonds
This ofay was worse than Hitler yes since it was against Afrikans, it’s OK to have scholarships and so on named after this savage. The evil that men do lives after them – and rarely more miserably than in the case of Cecil Rhodes, who died 100 years ago this month. By Matthew Sweet North of the Zambezi, they have long known about the suppression of free speech, about the bloody redistribution…
Pieter Wenning - Rhodes Memorial - 1916
Rhodes Memorial on Devil's Peak in Cape Town, South Africa, is a memorial to English-born, South African politician Cecil John Rhodes (1853–1902). The memorial was designed by the renowned architect, Sir Herbert Baker.
Cecil John Rhodes PC (5 July 1853 – 26 March 1902) was a British mining magnate and politician in southern Africa who served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896. An ardent believer in British imperialism, Rhodes and his British South Africa Company founded the southern African territory of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe and Zambia), which the company named after him in 1895. South Africa's Rhodes University is also named after him. He also put much effort towards his vision of a Cape to Cairo Railway through British territory. Rhodes set up the provisions of the Rhodes Scholarship, which is funded by his estate.
The son of a vicar, Rhodes was born at Netteswell House, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. A sickly child, he was sent to South Africa by his family when he was 17 years old in the hope that the climate might improve his health. He entered the diamond trade at Kimberley in 1871, when he was 18, and, thanks to funding from Rothschild & Co, began to systematically buy out and consolidate diamond mines. Over the next two decades he gained near-complete domination of the world diamond market, forming a massive monopoly. His diamond company De Beers, formed in 1888, retained its prominence into the 21st century.
Rhodes entered the Cape Parliament at the age of 27 in 1881, and in 1890, he became prime minister. During his time as prime minister, Rhodes used his political power to expropriate land from black Africans through the Glen Grey Act, while also tripling the wealth requirement for voting under the Franchise and Ballot Act, effectively barring black people from taking part in elections. After overseeing the formation of Rhodesia during the early 1890s, he was forced to resign in 1896 after the disastrous Jameson Raid, an unauthorised attack on Paul Kruger's South African Republic (or Transvaal). Rhodes's career never recovered; his heart was weak and after years of poor health he died in 1902. He was buried in what is now Zimbabwe; his grave has been a controversial site.
In his last will, he provided for the establishment of the prestigious international Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford University, the oldest graduate scholarship in the world. Every year it grants 102 full postgraduate scholarships. It has benefited prime ministers of Malta, Australia and Canada, President Bill Clinton, and many others.
Pieter Willem Frederick Wenning (9 September 1873 – 24 January 1921) was a South African painter and etcher, considered to be the progenitor of the style of Cape Impressionism.
Three Kings on Tour
Tumblr media
I first heard this story sat beside a campfire, beneath a blanket of stars, listening the calls of lions and hippos in Chobe National Park, Botswana. That introduction sounds made up, but is completely true. We’d had a day of safari and were camping in the bush with nothing but a ring a lanterns between us and the wild. Whilst most of our party had retired to their tents, my friend and I stayed up and chatted with our local guides about the animals, life in Botswana, and the country’s ties to my own, Great Britain.
‘The Empire on which the sun never sets’ was a boast for the vastness of the British Empire between the 18th and 20th centuries but it no longer remains a source of pride and this is something I’ve felt more acutely as I’ve travelled to places that were once colonies and have seen for myself the lasting ramifications. There might be something to be said for the colonialists’ investment in health care, education, infrastructure, spread of democracy etc. but this does not detract from the substantial human cost; dispossession, identity loss, the destruction of cultures, and the massacre of millions.
My history teacher once told me that we spent so much time learning about World War Two in school because they want to make sure our generation doesn’t allow the same thing to happen again. I got the impression it was much the same for our education on colonialism and I think it was against this backdrop that I became fascinated by small acts of rebellion against the great trampling machine of colonialism, such as in the tale of three African chiefs who traveled to England in 1895 to lobby Queen Victorian to protect their land, as told to me by two safari guides over one hundred years later.
In the 1890s the three chiefs, Sebele I, Bathoen I and Khama III, found themselves under increasing threat from the British South African Company, headed by Cecil Rhodes. Rhodes was putting pressure on the British government to annex Botswana to protect the British South African Company’s interests in the area, which would effectively see the leadership of Botswana firmly transferred to the British.
Each diplomatic, responsible, and popular, Sebele, Bathoen, and Khama were fierce protectorates of their land and their people and sought to prevent Rhodes from achieving his ambition. Khama in particular was in general an ally of the British, but after Rhodes used him and his tribesmen to defeat the Amandebele people and then accused him of being a coward for not wiping them out completely, Khama rejected Rhodes and determined to stand in his way.
With support from the London Missionary Society and the Temperance Movement, the chiefs sailed to England to lobby Queen Victoria to help them protect what was rightfully theirs. The safari guides told us that the chiefs sailed to England and presented themselves to the Queen in full tribal dress and although I haven’t seen anything to back that up online, I sincerely hope it is true and can only imagine her majesty’s reaction. Afterwards, Sebele wrote how he “had no idea she was so short and so stout.”
The chiefs spoke up and down the country and were ultimately successful in their mission, particularly with Rhodes’ reputation shattered by the failed Jameson Raid. The Bechuanaland Protectorate was established on the 31st March 1885 and became the Republic of Botswana on 30th September 1966.
A statue of the three chiefs, Three Dikgosi Monument, stands in the Botswanian capital, Gaborone. A statue of Cecil Rhodes which stands at Oxford University, England, is likely to be pulled down in the near future.
