Seraphina and Arlo: The Brainwashing of High Tiers
Exposition:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— Remi, Episode 50.
There is a heavy implication that Seraphina and Arlo were raised in much the same way. The pressure on Seraphina comes from her parents, so I’ll extrapolate that the same goes for Arlo. This raises the question: how do the authorities create such a strong societal pressure on such a small percentage of the population? Most high tiers will probably not know any other high tiers besides their parents. Take Wellston Private High School for example: it’s the most prestigious private school around, and canonically has the “highest concentration of high tiers in the region”. There are six high tiers in Wellston. Apply this to god tiers specifically, and there are only three. Not to mention that this current group of students is uniquely strong, even for Wellston. In Rei’s senior year, he was the strongest at 5.8 max.
So much of this brainwashing relies on the parents to do all of the work, and it only takes one or two people to break the cycle. So how are the authorities creating this immense pressure? One tactic could be by isolating high tiers. There is a very widespread concept that one shouldn’t associate with those outside their level range. A caste system like this that affects everyone is much easier to create and maintain than an expectation for a small group, and it also means that high tiers are only being influenced by those who are also high level. This creates an echo chamber. I’ve researched cults and how they brainwash victims, and the first step in the process is isolating them in exactly this way.
But, if there are so few high tiers, how the hell are they supposed be isolated from other groups? The answer is that high tiers are just isolated in general. Take a look at Arlo: his only friend is Remi, and even her, he keeps at an arm’s length. Arlo is only close with Remi in the first place because he was close with Rei, who, at the time of meeting Arlo, was presumably close in level with him. [EDIT: I forgot about Holden, which I think says a lot about his relevance. He is kept at more than an arm’s length and doesn’t seem to have any actual influence on Arlo, let alone a deep relationship. He is also not presented as an equal.] Take a look at Seraphina: before meeting John, she didn’t seem to have any friends other than possibly Arlo. Seraphina and Arlo pre-John seemed to have had more of a professional relationship, and while they were not close in level, Arlo did fit the bill of being a fellow god tier, and strong enough to also be brainwashed.
Now let’s look at Remi. In episode 60, Cecile says to Remi: “And yet here you are... Always hanging around those two monkeys, Blyke and Isen. Letting them treat you as an equal even though you’re in a completely different league.” This struck me as odd because, aside from Cecile herself, the Wellston students closest in level to Remi were Arlo, Blyke, and Isen. And who is she friends with? She actually was doing a pretty good job at following that social convention, unless Cecile wanted to be friends with Remi, which she clearly didn’t. But... her friends were still not close enough to her level. Was she supposed to just not have friends at all? The answer seems to be a resounding yes. Can you think of any genuine friends that Cecile has either?
Friendship simply isn’t considered a necessity for high tiers.
But... why is it that Arlo and Seraphina were brainwashed differently? Creating a societal norm for an isolated group of people is one thing, because those people’s mindsets feed into each other. Putting pressure on individual families to keep them in line, but doing it all in different ways? That would be near impossible. My theory is that Seraphina recieved the typical high tier brainwashing, and that Arlo was raised differently because he was being groomed to work for the authorities. Seraphina didn’t have a set career path planned out for her, but if she’s trying to be “perfect” by the standards of those controlling her, she’s bound to end up going in a direction that pleases them. Arlo on the other hand was specifically planned to become an authority figure. That’s why his brainwashing is so centered on leadership. Also, growing up with direct contact to the authorities makes it more possible for them to customize his brainwashing in this way.
But does all of this apply to high tiers in general, or is it specific to god tiers? Let’s take a look at the high tiers in Wellston. We have Seraphina, John, Arlo, Terrence, Remi, Cecile, and Blyke. John is a unique circumstance because he wasn’t raised by high tiers, so we’ll cross him off the list. Terrence was also unique, so we can cross him off as well. Remi was different from the norm as well. Why is that? Well, Remi actually wasn’t raised by high tiers either. Rei said on screen that both of his parents were elites. We can cross Remi off. Blyke doesn’t fit the bill either, but that’s easy to explain. He was an elite for a large part of the story, and he shot up rather quickly. We don’t know much of his family, but he probably wasn’t expected to be a high tier at all, and was raised as an elite. (All of this also serves to emphasize how much of this brainwashing comes from a person’s parents.) That leaves only Seraphina, Arlo, and Cecile to look at.
Cecile does seem to have high tier brainwashing, but it’s not nearly as intense as with Seraphina and Arlo. She doesn’t seem “obsessive”, and she wasn’t one of the examples Remi mentioned in chapter 50. It’s clear that high tiers are brainwashed in general, but god tiers are kept on a much shorter leash. This makes sense, obviously, because keeping a population in control like that is less necessary the lower the level. However, it’s also a chicken an egg situation: god tiers are both more important to keep in control, and also easier to keep in control. It’s important to note just how many exceptions we had to cross off. People like Remi and Blyke aren’t actually that unusual— a lower leveled high tier is much more likely to have non-high tier parents, or to have not always been a high tier themselves, or just in general, to have way more day-to-day interaction with non-high tiers. The brainwashing gets more and more diffused the lower down the ladder you go.

Wellston top 8 students as cards! And why I care too much about this
Seraphina: Queen of Clovers -> Ace of Spades
John: Joker
Arlo: King of Diamonds
Remi: Jack of Diamonds -> Queen of Hearts
Cecile: Jack of Spades
Blyke: Ten of Hearts -> Jack of Hearts -> King of Clovers
Isen: Seven of Clovers -> Jack of Clovers
Terrence: Eight of Diamonds
I used Clovers as the suit name instead of the traditional Clubs because clovers are associated with luck (even though these aren’t the four leaf ones), and the Class of Clovers (John/Sera/Blyke/Isen’s year, possibly also Terrence’s) was ridiculously and disproportionately overpowered.
First I want to address Cecile actually she’s weirdly the linchpin in all this. I made her the Jack because I do think she was the Jack that Remi dethroned (while Sera was still Queen), and I ended up choosing Spades for her as it’s the war-like suit that fits the order of Unordinary’s world, as well as her lack of hesitance to use her power to get the job done.
I ended up taking a lot of inspiration from the game of New Texis Hold ‘Em Sera plays with John and William early on. In it, the community cards are the Ten of Hearts, King of Diamonds, and Jack of Clovers. I wanted to make these match up with the Royals at the time.
Given that, it seemed obvious that Arlo would be the King of Diamonds; the untouchable king. Remi would fit neatly as the Jack of Clovers, which kind of fits the relative backseat she seems to have initially taken as the Queen early on. Nobody respects her authority, and the power transfer does seem to be recent. That was kind of a justification I used to say she’s not in her final form yet.
I gave Blyke then the Ten of Hearts, as he’s the third Royal but honestly really shouldn’t be anywhere near the Royals, even if he’s got the spirit of it.
The cards in Sera’s hand are the Queen and Ace of Spades. Seeing as she rose from the role of Queen to the Ace, and the Ace is the most powerful card in the game, I assigned her the Ace of Spades pretty much automatically. Plus she has Ace of Spades imagery, which I pointed out before. But I’d like to reserve the Queen of Spades, and instead make Sera start as the Queen of Clovers. Again, that’s her set in with the rest of the Class of Clovers. When Sera ascends to Ace of Spades, Remi becomes the Queen… and I think it’s not hard to agree that Remi is the Queen of Hearts
With most of Wellston’s Top Five covered, I just wanna check in on John; not much to say here as he’s the Joker, plain and simple. This also ties into that card game hehe
I’d rather do Terrence before Isen, so here goes: he pretty much just goes along with the hierarchy and isn’t driven by his own agenda, so he could be one of the counting cards. I picked Eight since that was the rank he died at. He doesn’t fall under any of the other suits easily, so I just picked Diamonds to isolate him.
I imagine Isen starting at Seven of Clovers, since he entered in that class and ended at that rank. He gets to ascend to Jack, just as he did in story, and he maintains his Clover class.
Meanwhile, Blyke is promoted to Jack of Hearts, since he spends a lot of his time as Jack basically being Remi’s lieutenant. He doesn’t actually get serious about the role until after X-Rei visits Brannish, and by that point his dethronement from Jack is already imminent. So directly from Jack of Hearts, he gets to rise to King of Clovers. He really was a King of the people, and we see that in how people respond to his ascension to the role. So he gets to take the King role in the Clovers suite, finally leaving Hearts as he’s found his own motivation beyond Remi’s.

so i saw your response to my ask,,,, and so ofc i need to ask abt terrence in your au. i originally assumed evie and terrence would swap, but then i saw evie and claire swapped! so im curious about him :]
also! how does elaine fight with her ability as healing? and what was john's reasoning as to choosing cecile over blyke?
hope you dont mind me dumping you with questions!!! your au is so cool and i love the art you make for it- keep it up! <3
[also arlo, elaine, and cecile is the funniest trio ever to me i love their swap roles]
hehe i knew you were gonna ask about terrence :> ok so i was first thinking of swapping him with juni way before part 2 of season 2 had started, because i couldn’t find anyone else to swap him with and they were all minor characters we haven’t seen much of. however, now i think his swap would be dylan. he would still have the same backstory as canon about his mother but he wouldn’t be recruited by spectre. he’d still be hostile towards high tiers but kinda starts to look up to sera after she saves him from some bullies one day. he’d deny it if somebody were to ask him this though lol. he’s also good friends with claire and adrion :) oh also i think he wouldn’t have an ability level as high as he has in the canon and gets bullied a lot because it’s a non-combat ability. by the way evie - terrence would be a cool ass swap ngl i’d love to see some traitor evie >:)
i imagine elaine is very good at hand-to-hand combat so she either fights like that when necessary but mostly supports the others during a fight. maybe her ability could have a function like aura boosting in higher levels? so that she can make others’ abilities stronger this way.
gotta be honest, i have never thought of why john chose cecile over blyke before hgfhdj but in this au, blyke is a little cunning and has a lot of connections around the school (he’s pretty popular), while cecile is a less cunning version of her canon self. she’s also quite diligent and cool headed, contrasting with blyke’s hot-tempered nature. i think cecile overall would look more trustworthy to john so that’s why he’d choose her as jack.
also yes, the swap au trio is the funniest thing ever and one of my favorite things in this au hhdjsh i really wanna explore their dynamic more. also, you’re not dumping me with questions, i really enjoyed them! feel free to ask more if you want to <3

can i just talk about unordinary and feminism for a sec?
many fantasy works attempt to position themselves as feminist; they show female characters who can fight better than the guys, who are rough around the edges and not like other girls. they often have a male character who is misogynistic, and who gets his ass handed to him by the female character. uno takes another direction: it does not even address sexism at all, in any way, shape or form, and that makes it much more feminist than these kind of works. (that is not to say that there are no other fantasy works that are highly and effectively feminist, of course; this is simply a generalization based on a frequent observation.)
the world of uno is so unique because even now, over three hundred episodes later, we have yet to see a character be in any way sexist. john calls a few girls a bitch, but he seems to use it only as the female version of 'fucker' or 'asshole'. never does he look down on girls simply for being girls. (he looks down on them for existing as a participating member of their society, though.)
on top of that, the way in which the female characters are written is really really great. many authors struggle with writing characters of the opposite gender, but uru-chan clearly does not suffer from that ailment. she writes her female characters like she writes her male characters: that is to say, diverse and different, with distinct personalities, and more or less feminine or masculine without it taking away from the depth of their personalities. their gender is simply another aspect of their character, that does not take away but instead adds to it. at no point are characters stereotyped, and any lack of character depth is due to them not having enough screentime. (the notable exception to this is, of course, zeke.) sera likes shopping and boba and pig-themed games. remi is kind and wears a bow in her hair and her naivety is unique to her and no other female character. elaine had a crush on arlo but got over it after he treated her badly one time too often. cecile is scheming and cunning and she plays the game of the hierarchy well. there are female characters with traditionally 'bad' feminine traits, whose flaws are discussed not in the context of them being women but them being people with unique and distinctive experiences. remi, for example, is naive not because she's a girl but because of the way she was raised, the people she's interacted with, and the experiences she's had. her brother was just as much of an idealist and also believed in the good of the people around him, until he saw proof of the opposite. and furthermore, women never put down other women for being 'too feminine' or anything like that.
moreover, uno does not attempt to position women as either better or worse than men. girls fight just like guys; the male characters have no problem fighting a girl just because she is a girl, and they don't hesitate to hurt them the way they would hurt a guy. to be honest, i really struggled with this when i first started reading uno: i felt as if it was morally wrong for john and arlo to fight girls like that. i have since come to the realization that that view is inherently misogynistic, as i did not have such problems with them fighting guys. uno really portrays women in the most feminist way possible: as truly, fully equal to men, with no caveats, no exceptions, no special treatment.
the casualness with which uno depicts men and women being completely equal in society is quite possibly the most feminist thing it could've done, as a webcomic about superpowered teenagers fighting against terrorists and the evil government.

So, I reread the beginning of UnOrdinary (up to where John reveals himself but not much beyond that), and the thing that stuck out to me was relationships within the hierarchy.
It's explicitly stated that people within the different classes/groups tend to befriend/socialize only with their group for obvious reasons, or "knowing their place".
John is a half and half latebloomer. He can't be in one group without remembering the people in the other, he wouldn't fit in to any of the social hierarchies. Not the high tier, not the mid tier, not even the low tier or cripples. Thus he tries to ignore it, focusing on developing his personality apart from any of the existing classes.
It's kind of a classic set-up, the most powerful person having an alter-ego or trying to act "normal" in order to connect with people on their level rather than always looming over them. John added his past regret and trauma to the mix, but manages to conceal it (in the beginning at least). He just wanted friendship, friendship defined by personality and traits instead of proficiency in beating the snot out of people.
John didn't hate the bullies, or Arlo, or the violence, not really. What makes him hate everyone isn't their power or even their bullying ways, it's the fact that the hierarchy forces people to only associate with people on their level (and turns them into monsters around anyone weaker). If he had been honest with himself his real hatred was for that hierarchy, the system that (in his mind) enabled everything else.
Even if he had been open about his power level or tried to fit in with the mid-tiers, the outcome would have likely still been the same. People would be judging him purely on his power level (and not on him himself), the very thing he wanted to avoid. Arlo would still be breathing down his neck for not "knowing his place", his "equals" within the hierarchy would be gossiping about him and even mouthing off at him to his face. There's a scene early on with Cecilia lecturing Remy about fraternizing with Blyke and Isen, insinuating that the lower tiers don't actually respect her because she refuses to "stay in her lane" (they don't say it to her face of course). Heck, Arlo later points out that Cecile was talking smack to the person who defeated her and "took her title". It's almost like your power level wasn't the real thing everyone respected, it was the pecking order your power level placed you in. (On a side note John rightfully gets flack for not trying to make things better, but could things really be made better until everyone's hierarchy-shackled mindsets were broken free? Maybe John's rampage was what Headmaster Vaughn had been looking for all along.)
Mid-tier John befriending high-tier Seraphina would still have brought down Arlo's wrath and made him a pariah who got constantly targeted, and high-tier John would have still been lonely and ostracized by everyone else for not knowing his place, at least when they weren't kissing up to him for favors (which would have ignited his wrath and given him the poor reputation he got later on).
All of this also meant he couldn't really live up to UnOrdinary the book because it still divided people up into groups, into a "hierarchy" such as it was. His dad wanted to guide him into the "guardian" or "protector" role, but he just wanted to relate to people based on their personalities/talents instead of their power level. The actual cripples and low-tiers would have been far too obsequious and needy for his tolerance, the mid-tiers too obsessed with maintaining their paltry footholds in the monkey-pile. He ends up relating best to the high-tiers like Sera, but only because they have enough security in their position to actually consider what he was offering.
Sera ended up being the only one who responded, the only one who comes to share his desire. The story of how they became friends almost feels normal, like two high-school students in a normal kid's story. It's a rather genius way to introduce the setting, showing how difficult (and ultimately impossible) just being a normal highschool student with "normal" friends would be rather than trying to simply explain it.
In the end though everyone else wanted him to fall in line and be defined by his power. Arlo goes on and on about John not being a "proper" cripple (and then gets all indignant when John stops being crippled but still won't dance to his tune.) In the end they all get their wish, and unfortunately most of them had earned it.

Unordinary Court Jester AU. Is this anything. Isen is Hubert Hawkins. Giacomo is John, Griswold is Blyke, Ravenhurst is Cecile, the king is Arlo, Gwendolyn is Remi, Jean is... idk, Sera? Elaine? (tho Elaine as Griselda... but then relationship wise it would make more sense that Gwen is Sera), and in the end it's revealed it was just Isen making up crack in the Safe House while Blyke tries to interrupt all the time.

honestly Cecile is so underrated and underappreciated
like YEAH I know we all hated her bc she let Juni expose Sera to the school and therefore enabled all of the abuse that happened after
BUUUUT let bygones be bygones!! Seeing her all the time during the Joker arc was so much damn fun XD her and John’s interactions were so good like look at this gold
Tumblr media
She’s so stiff and concerned meanwhile he’s going absolutely psycho. What a duo I love them.
Seraphina was an elegant unbothered queen but it’s so fun to see Cecile enforce her position and grab onto power even though she’s Rank Five and therefore not too close to the other Royals. Her pitiful attempts at trying to enforce her own agenda just make the Joker and King John arcs even more fun
