Here's a big project I've been sitting on! All That You Love Will Be Carried Away, by our very own @ceruleancynic! And a box, naturally, building boxes for books continues to bring me immense joy.

What we have here is not just the main fic, or the main series, but also All That You Love (The High Hope Remix) alt pov short fic by byzantienne, and, a detail that I was really excited to include: the initial comment exchange between these two fantastic authors of m the first fic in the series. Did I title that second little book 'all that you meet cute will be carried away' as a silly placeholder? Did I then get super attached and refuse to change it? Uh-

Hell yeah, I refuse to be dignified about any of my favorite hobbies!

But the real secret delight here was that I've been looking for the right opportunity to get weird with boxes. Peller boxes, hinged slipcases, yes, fine, but those are like the box version of my sixfold book adventure. I'm still shooting for some parallel to my fourteenfold book, I'm looking for a way to go completely off the rails. I have some ideas, but it's hard, finding a good large chonk and a small number of equally sized texts, which made a unified and complete set, AND which excited me to work with. That might sound unnecessarily picky, but I swear, there was a good reason for it!

This worked out so perfectly. I wanted a large book at the center of things. And I wanted two small books oriented in a different direction, placed end to end, at its edge. And I got it! I didn't want to commit too early, and it would have been heartbreaking to fail, but once the big book was together, and the preliminary typesets for the two little books were almost identical? I just HAD to try.

Tumblr is already silencing me and refusing to let me attach as many images as I want, so for this post, let's talk about the main book a little! Cute little quarto bricks are my new FAVORITE favorite thing, as I'm sure you can guess from my archives, and this one was a dream to put together.

It had to be a three-quarter leather binding, naturally. And I was sitting on some gorgeous iridescent maroon paper for endpapers (no photos in this set, it refuses to photograph well, as is the way of pretty iridescent things). I spent some time agonizing over my other material, and whether to use two different marbled patterns, but I went with it in the end. The vibes were distinct enough but the palettes overlapped enough that I really enjoyed the effect. And with the northcott art of marbling fabrics (my beloved) I was able to use lines of symmetry to get some nice fussy cuts for the big book and the little ones. All of the books have leather endbands, matching the spine. And the big book has the big thick faux raised bands I tried out with my last svsss! I don't have enough pictures to show off all the book interiors, but I used this cover plate for the series and main fics within it.

And then, like I showed you above, I put it all together. Marbled paper and silk moire for covering the box, a lot of very tense wrangling of glued-up paper in very small spaces, and, at one point, carefully lowering glue-covered pieces of moire bookcloth down these little pits (walls already covered) using that tab in the front like the world's awkwardest elevator shaft. But the EFFECT!

I'm very, very pleased with myself, and delighted to have delivered this book to its new home. I've been absolutely VIBRATING with a desire to share, so! I can't be contained by tumblr's image limit. Hold on for two seconds (approx.) and I'm going to reblog this post with some wip pictures and more detail about how I worked this thing out and assembled this box and modified my initial design on the fly

Book Rec Request

Has anyone read any nonfiction books diving into details about the electromagnetic field that they’d recommend? (Up to and including text books, as long as they’re intro-ish level.)

I’ve already read Faraday, Maxwell, and the Electromagnetic Field by Nancy Forbes and Basil Mahon, plus Relativity: The Special and the General Theory by Albert Einstein. (Though admittedly I only fully understood ~66% of Relativity. 😂) I’m still looking to read more about the topic!

I gave The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen Hawking a read, but it wasn’t really what I’m after. At least for this topic, I much prefer a closer look that digs a bit more into the conceptualization or logistics of an idea as opposed to the "we think maybe XYZ" overview.

I am finally, finally getting around to reading @ceruleancynic‘s Strange Practice, and it is a delight. I’ve long been fond of CC’s practical, very sensible female protagonists and Greta fits that to a T.

Right now I’m about a third of the way through and Varney the vampyre is having feeeelings while moping about in a too-small borrowed dressing gown, and oh my god:

i want to tell you a story about a book.

this book first came into my consciousness as an idea attached to a person i love enormously, and every idea of this sort that this person has ever had was both solid and entertaining, and i’m sure, although i don’t remember exactly how the conversation went, that i said i couldn’t wait to read it.

of course over several months other people with far more power and influence than your obedient servant here had a similar reaction to it, and pretty soon the book had sold, and i jumped around at least half as much as if it had been my own book, and that time i definitely said i couldn’t wait to read it, knowing that soon i would.

a few months later again, an offer, and a very kind one: did i want to read the complete draft? to which i said of course i fucking did.

for reasons that had nothing at all to do with this book, when it came to me i didn’t read it immediately. until the end of a particularly and memorably horrendous day, about which i needed to stop thinking before i did anything with legal, financial, or medical consequences. and i thought, what i need is a story.

so i sat down, and over the course of two hours or so, i read this book. and i tried to write down everything i thought, because after all isn’t that the best thing you can do for an author, although it simply wasn’t possible after a certain point - i didn’t even notice three of the chapters go by, i was so completely lost in it. and i knew - of course i already knew, but i knew - this book was going to be terrific.

i don’t think it was called that at that point, but the book i was reading would become strange practice. and it’s sitting at my elbow right now, with that white wood and black ink smell of a new book, and vivian shaw printed on the cover which is surreal because that’s my friend viv and this is her book and i just lost two hours during which i looked up maybe three times, even though i’ve already read it, and - 

- look, a lot of people have said this in their reviews, and that’s because it’s true, but strange practice is a thoroughly kind book. its world is not always kind - it’s recognisably the world we live in, and populated with exactly the sort of people we all know - but it is a book that leaves you convinced that there are people out there, fighting the good fight. and maybe you will never know that they are fighting, because they aren’t fighting for you, but they are fighting, and because of them the world - your world, our world - is better.

surprising nobody who’s been following the consistently spectacular work with which @ceruleancynic has been gifting us all these years, it’s also clever, and funny, and thoughtful, and has moments of genuine heartwrench, and is written in prose that has all the perfectly polished elegance of a silver tea service. it’s just such a satisfying, rich, rewarding read. you will love everyone in it. even - maybe especially - the people you don’t expect to love. (don’t even get me started on stephen and eric. or maybe do. just. augh.) and you will all absolutely adore ruthven.

i really, really, very badly, needed this book when it came to me. and i think right now, maybe, a lot of us need this book.

i suspect, maybe you, my dear readers, need this book. so.

in this economy, if you can afford bread for your soul, you can find it out in the wilds, at most reputable bookstores, i’m sure. i’ve not seen it yet, but i got my copy from the book depository, which does free shipping worldwide and has the benefit of not being amazon. that link will take you right to the book. it seems to be priced around $15-20 depending on whose dollars you’re thinking in.

Oh. Oohhh. Oh!!!

I won a giveaway for Strange Practice?!! I have read the first chapter (aloud, w/ my mom who will probably also be reading this when I’m done), did it right away actually. It’s soooo good. The prose is rich and descriptive and has this nice mix of atmosphere and irreverence. 

I like all the characters I’ve met so far, too. One chapter’s not enough to get a deep understanding of who they are, but so far they’re very charming. I feel confident, on one chapter, recommending Strange Practice to ALL Y’ALL. LOUDLY. 

Side note-- it’s a very different kind of story in some ways, but... I’ll add a particular recommendation for all of you who enjoyed the Golem and the Jinni. I think some of the elements I personally enjoyed in that book are gonna be in this one too. Cities and the supernatural, two great tastes etc.

so 2019 saw at least three Homestuck BNFs release successful and well-respected SF&F debut novels:  Tamsyn Muir/UrbanAnchorite, Jennifer Giesbrecht/CephiedVariable, Arkady Martine/Byzantienne. Vivian Shaw/CeruleanCynic also released the third book in her successful series. Almost certainly there are more that I just haven’t heard about (or don’t realize are Homestuck people).

Maybe this isn’t actually unusual, and I just don’t know about all the other fandoms that catapulted a bunch of talented people onto the scene all at once. (There must be successful pros other than Cassandra Clare who got their start in Potter fanfiction, surely? And of course large chunks of the SF community wrote Trek fanfic at some point.) But at the very least I feel like this bunch are notably successful, and notably closely clustered together in time and community ties, and notably out about their fanfiction identities.

Maybe this has happened many times before, but those waves of new authors just weren’t public about having gotten their start in a major fandom?

anyway i just think that’s neat. it’s awesome that they’re getting paid for their work because they’re all very good, and it confirms that the homestuck fandom has always been full of very talented people

Ahhwelcome to the fandom! Gladly! I’ll just clarify my list first, though. If youwant famous, then I suggest just starting at the top of the Most Hits filter of theAO3 tag.

Personally, what I consider famous and what Iconsider a must read are different so I hope that’s okay! This will be alist of my favourite must read fics though it’s by no means exclusiveand it’s just my own personal opinion. Enjoy! (•⊙ω⊙•)

Of course, General LeiaOrgana knows the risks her mole is taking by sending her life savinginformation. - Bodies,Can’t You See? by sual When Hux sees the positive result on the pregnancy test scanner, he comes toseveral alarming realizations all at once. One: that his birth control has beentampered with. Two: that the baby is Kylo’s. Three: that this is his truepunishment for Starkiller’s failure. And quietly, in a weak, tiny voice in theback of his mind, the unsettling conclusion that he wants to keep it. He’ll diebefore he lets anyone near his child. He’ll tear apart anyone that tries to getin his way. Even Kylo.             

- FollowingOrders by @redcoleSnoke decides that Kylo needs to produce an heir so they can continue hisline and Hux finds himself lined up as the other father.  

- Sevento One by @anorlostHux is trying to keep everything under control as he suddenly has seven Rens tocontend with.  As he tries to keep them from destroying his ship, he failsto notice that the Knights of Ren have other plans.  Plans thatinvolve…cuddling.

- Flickerin the Void by @mothdustmouthHux watched in silence as the light swept over his body. The power stunned him,as did the bright jet of flame as it licked its color into his eyes. This wasnot the calm brightness of last night in the presence of Kylo Ren. This was adifferent sort of light altogether, massive and deadly. It overwhelmed him. - The Interrogation Game by @jinxedambitions    Kylo Ren finds himself strapped to his own interrogation table, getting a lesson from General Hux.  Pain isn’t the only interrogation technique, perhaps not even the most effective.  Strapped down with nowhere to go, Kylo is at Hux’s mercy.  If he just tells Hux what he wants to hear, he might find relief from this overwhelming pleasure…but it isn’t that simple.

- Forceless by @sinningsquire  Ren has lost the one thing that defined him from before he was even born. Somehow this results in a mad dash through the Galaxy, with more bloodshed that two men should be able to bring on, and with one happy ending under a starry canopy of a summer night.     

- Like a Vicious Dove by @thevulcanpresidentIt has been a year since Hux destroyed Snoke and took the galaxy for his own, a year since Kylo Ren pledged his service to the new emperor. When Hux gets kidnapped, he trusts his knight to rescue him. 

- Rule by @thez1337After the events on the rebel base, and the escape of some of the highest commanding rebel leaders, Kylo Ren takes Snokes place as head of the First Order. General Hux seeths, and his own secret ambition at ruling the Galaxy isn’t quite so secret.      

- All’s Fair… by @nonsensicalsoliloquy    "You missed me.“  Hux frowned, “I did not miss you, Ren. I didn’t miss your arrogance, petulance, or destruction of my ship anymore than you missed me and my refusal to cow to your whims.“  Ren only leaned in closer, his frustratingly large body nearly flush with Hux’s slender one. "What makes you think I didn’t miss you?”OR: The tension’s been building and building seemingly every day since the moment they met, and it appeared as if Ren had decided it was time it ended.  

- Take Me or Leave Me by kyluxicle (LadyCamillus), oorsprong    When Kylo Ren returns from training with Leader Snoke, he comes back more collected and focused. While Hux appreciates this newfound control, he misses the passion that Ren used to have—especially towards him. In attempt to get Ren back into his bed, Hux sets his sights on a lesser officer in order to bring out Ren’s jealousy. Either Ren will snap out of this cold persona and take him back, or Hux will have to settle for less.  

- Politics by @sithofrenHux has an unusual request for his birthday. He wants to ‘capture’ Senator Organa-Solo. Kylo Ren agrees.

- Game Over by @onewhositswiththeturtlesHux has a combat simulation program developed for all First Order personnel and has a sim of himself as the final boss. He congratulates himself when the program becomes a massive success, unaware of the fact that hackers have changed the coding to dress his sim in increasingly scandalous outfits. When Hux finds out that Ren is spending a large amount of time in the sim he gets suspicious and pulls up the video logs of Ren’s sessions, only to realize that Ren is seeking much more than combat training from Hux’s sim. After some thought and planning, Hux decides to give Ren the real thing.

- The Lingerie Incident by @thesunandoceanblue  Hux doesn’t want to be thinking of Leia while he’s tugging down his pants. Instead he thinks of Kylo, and how he’d react to this. He’d be terribly jealous. His secret revealed. To his mother of all people. Hux grimaces in amusement as he shimmies his pants down with one hand, the other holding his coat.    

- Fractured by @kyluxtrashpitWhen Kylo returns from a meeting with his master broken and wrong, it becomes clear that Snoke has gone too far. Hux is left to not only pick up the pieces, but to put them back together again while considering the past and the future.

- Generosity by  orphan_account                Dressed down to his undershirt – which had become far too crinkled for his taste – Hux sported his uniform pants, minus the boots, however, left in his warm, black bed socks (He doesn’t like cold, okay?). And he also had his tongue buried in Kylo Ren’s ass.

- My Own Breath by @saltandlimesHux has only ever caught glimpses of Kylo Ren’s face, short moments when the knight’s helmet is off. After an incident in the hangar, he realizes he needs to see more.

- Matches to Paper Dolls  by @ctheneOn a mission from Supreme Leader Snoke to recover a lost Jedi artifact from the Smuggler’s Moon of Nar Shaddaa, Kylo Ren and General Hux are accidentally drugged.  In addition to spice, it seems, the Hutt crime lord Grakkus was also a purveyor of powerful black market aphrodisiacs. With no choice but to copulate immediately, Hux must talk a terrified virgin Ren through the whole unpleasant, humiliating process.  Upon returning to the Finalizer, Hux is ready to pretend nothing happened.  Ren, however, deeply affected by Hux’s kindness to him throughout the ordeal, can’t put the experience behind him so easily.

- Who’s Your Master? by @groffictionHux murmured softly, “You don’t need punishment tonight, Ren. You need rest.”“But, I want… I want this… need this,” Kylo protested weakly, reaching around to nuzzle at Hux’s boots.

- tender is the night lying by your side by @thethespacecoyote    Emperor Hux misses his mate dearly, even when he’s away clinching their reign. Thankfully, an alpha as powerful as Kylo Ren can overcome even the furthest reaches of the galaxy to tend to his omega’s desires.      

- Forced Perspective by @gamebird   Kylo Ren and Hux are stranded on a jungle world after negotiations go bad. Kylo is badly wounded, his life resting in Hux’s treacherous hands. His take on the reasons for his survival are very different from Hux’s. 

- Chosen Ones by @babbushkaIn the middle of the night memories come rushing back, thankfully Hux and Kylo have each other to hold when they do.  

- Zip it by @centurytwitch   Hux feels that his contributions to the First Order are worthy of an award. He’s not expecting a new rank, though that would be nice. What he really wants is a new uniform to acknowledge the mental wear and tear he endures, the duty he fulfills every cycle.Kylo thinks otherwise.    

- Putting you Back Together but Betterby @techiehuxThere is value to Hux yet, besides being a minor nuisance and occasional source of entertainment. With a few… improvements, he could be ferocious on the battlefield, commanding respect and demanding it in turn.

- No Rest for the Wicked by @embershx​Kylo sees Hux sleeping in their bed and can’t help himself.

- The Escape of the Fox by @theweddingofthefoxes       After the First Order is defeated and Rey becomes Leia’s heir, Kylo Ren and General Hux are both fugitives, and they haven’t seen one another in years. Ren settles into a hermetic existence selling kyber, but when he learns Hux is still alive, he goes to find him under the pretense of staging a coup. But there’s another reason he wants to see Hux again….

I’m going to leave it there! I’ve been at this list on-and-off for about 2 hours, looking through my bookmarks and favourites, and there are still a tonne more but this felt enough to satiate you, anon! Remember, this list is just my personal recommendation of what I believe are must-read fics for a newcomer! They’re fun, they’re all written brilliantly and all amazingly represent the two space nerds that we love!
