Outlying story within the world of Out There...

Our heroes find themselves wandering through a creepy, abandoned, derelict space station. Its origin is unknown. Its makers are unknown. Its whole purpose out in the middle of nowhere with no visible reason to exist is unknown.

The Horizon family stumbles upon it by accident. They venture a board in need of supplies.

Cue creepy ambiance low hum.

OUT THERE: THE DERELICT

Terra: "It just keeps going. One room into the next, into the next... I forgot where we are. There's no windows." She calls her twin on her wrist com. He's with Selka in another part of the station. They got separated, "Will, where are you guys?"

Will's voice over the com: "Beats the hell outta me."

Selka's voice: "Language."

Will: "Heck outta me. We think we're on the path to a medical bay. Where are you?"

Yune: *grumbles* "Lost in Liminal space."

Terra: She arches an eyebrow, "What's 'Lemon space?'"

Yune: "Not 'Lemon space,' Liminal space. It's an in between zone that doesn't seem to end. It has no way out. It's like being caught between realities, if that's ever a thing that can happen."

Terra: "Maybe the Source Field exists in lemon space."

Yune: "We know next to nothing about it. Maybe it does."

Will's voice: "I have a bad feeling about this."

Yune: "Yeah, me, too. Just keep your com open, Sparky. We can't lose contact."

Will: "Roger that."

Selka: "Who's Roger? Someone you know?"

Will: "It's what you say. Like over-and-out."

Terra: "I don't want to be stuck in lemon space."

Yune: "I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it. I hate it..."

Terra: "You're a ball of anxiety. I can feel it like I'm wrapped in plastic. ... You're afraid."

Yune: "What, me? Afraid? Nah, just supremely creeped out right now."

Terra: "That's kind of what 'afraid' is."

Yune: "Can you not do that?"

Terra: "I can't help it. It's like my inside com is always on every channel."

Will's voice: "Story of my life." Will has ADHD that they need to get meds for at a Tehrellian starbase. There's no way they're setting foot near a Regent station.

Terra: "And you're a lot easier to read than anyone else. Except Will."

Will's voice: "Yay. I win. :)"

Yune: "He's your twin. Of course he is. Ok. Ok, so I'm not comfortable. ...Maybe a little afraid."

Terra: "Why? I know it's really creepy, but we got in. There has to be a way out.

Yune: "It's not just that. It's the dread of wondering IF there's a way out. No way to see outside, no way to keep track of where you've been. One wrong turn, one forgotten entry, and you're lost forever. Anything could be around the next corner or nothing. 'Nothing' is actually more horrible. It's being trapped with no way out. I hate liminal space. I really hate liminal space. It's the worst."

Will's voice: "You're afraid of lemon space?"

Yune: "You're afraid of the dark, and Squeaker's afraid of bugs and spiders. I'm afraid of liminal space. It comes with being human. I'm not immune to having a phobia despite how awesome I am."

Will: "Selka's not human. What are you afraid of?"

Selka: "Drowning."

Terra: "We're in space."

Selka: "Doesn't matter. There's still no air in space. One wrong move and you're dead."

Yune: "So that's why you hate spacewalks."

Selka: "I thought it was obvious."

The com crackles.

Yune: "Selka... Selka."

Will: "You're breaking up. Terra, I can't--"

Terra: "Will? Will, can you hear me? ... Will!

Yune: Trying desperately to keep the signal, "Come on..."

Static.

Yune: He swallows, "Oh no."

Terra: "What happened to the signal?" Though she knew darn well what happened, she didn't want it to be true.

Yune: "We lost them. I can't reestablish a connection. We're either too far away - which I doubt - or something is interfering with the signal. We're on our own."

Terra: She shuffles closer to him, "Ok, now I'm afraid of lemon space."

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

The reason why I always emphasize that utrh era Jason is 18/19 and refuse to let people forget that Jason and Tim are canonically 2 years apart is because the concept of Jason as a fairly young adult with little to no support system is a fascinating concept to me and it goes under explored in both canon and fanon. I think it adds such an interesting wrinkle to the everything and is a great contrast to all the Red Hood shit. I’m thinking about New Earth Jason specifically here, he’s both younger than post-nu52 Jason and more isolated. Most people at 19, even if they can afford to be out on their own in this economy, still have contact with their family of origin for support. Jason is not only estranged from his family with little to no support system (depending on how much you interpret Talia being involved after Lost Days), he’s also doing mob boss shit while he’s still technically young enough to be somebody’s prom date. He didn’t go to his prom because he was probably in Russia learning how to make bombs or something (and because, yknow, the whole dying thing).

Jason is someone who both had to grow up too fast and by all means should be somewhat emotionally stunted. Not only does trauma stunt you he was catatonic for long enough that he’s missing literal years from his adolescence. He’s young enough that he’s still reeling from trauma from childhood and adolescence (late teens/ early twenties are peak ‘desperately trying to recover from childhood’ era).

I think underneath the rough Red Hood exterior that Jason should be naive in ways that people wouldn’t really expect. He doesn’t have much experience with relationships (both romantic and friendships), and it’s been years since he’s socialized much with people his age (he doesn’t socialize much at all he’s pretty isolated). I think even if he doesn’t look young that at times he would slip up and show that he is

Also I just love the contrast. I like the idea that sometimes you’ll hear Red Hood cackle without the helmet on and you’ll recognize traces of that 15 year old kid and then he’ll shoot someone immediately after. Like imagine if utrh was a Boy King of the underworld sorta deal

i want buck being wooed - flowers and being taken out and a little protective hand on the small of his back

i want to hear all the soft ways tommy can say evan and the look on buck's face when he does

i want to see them at tommy's karaoke trivia place because holy shit buck would love it (and didnt oliver say that we're getting buck singing this season cause uhhhhh)

i love that this is such a fling, such a happy thing for buck - he is finally feeling that puzzle piece click into place and it is freeing

and i cant wait to see all the small ways we see that play out!!!

Really fucked up that, when they’re young, Patrick and Art are SO tactile with each other, so comfortable sharing the same space. Art lets Patrick touch him and move him and physically overwhelm him and easily acquiesces to it, if not outright enjoys it.

Then in the present, they’ve been so far out of each other’s orbit for so long, held such animosity that when they have their moment alone in the sauna, Art physically recoils from Patrick’s close proximity! It’s so painful to watch because even as Patrick’s goading him, it’s so obvious he wants to be able to get back into Art’s space. But Art has erected all these walls around himself, he refuses to give Patrick an inch or even admit to missing how close they used to be!

AND THEN we see Art and Tashi later and he wants her to hold him, to be gentle with him, and just TOUCH him. Like, he does miss that kind of close physical contact! He either doesn’t know how to ask for it or is uncomfortable being that openly vulnerable. Worth noting that he pretty much always defers to Tashi in regard to initiating physical intimacy (with their first kiss, though he does state his desire, SHE has to be the one to make the first move). And it seems pretty obvious that Tashi herself isn’t comfortable providing that intimacy, whereas Patrick actively seeks to provide it (the hug/forehead kiss after their win together in the early years, dragging the stool closer to him).

Art has tried very hard to act like he doesn’t need physical affection and even though his discipline and devotion to Tashi has made him a stronger tennis player, it’s made him a hollow person, which, in turn, has kept him from becoming a GREAT tennis player.

All of this, of course, is why the ending hits so damn hard.

Ok ok hear me out: it could end in tragedy,, AND have a happy ending. The attempt(s) on Machete’s life force him to flee, he doesn’t even have the chance to find Vasco. Cue gay longing for at least a few years while Machete despairs over the loss of his love, his life, his status. He and Vasco only reunite (again) in their later years. Their relationship is forever flavored with loss and loneliness, but that only means they savor every moment that much more

I also I would like to see them as old men. Vasco would be so droopy :)

So I've been thinking lately about how Mithrun is Kabru's dark mirror (more on that another time- it needs its own post), and I thought it interesting that one of their parallels is that they were both cared for by Milsiril, but in opposite directions. She took Kabru in as her foster after he was orphaned and tried to convince him not to become an adventurer. On the flip side, she helped rehabilitate Mithrun specifically so that he could rejoin the Canaries.

And I kept wondering: why?

For Kabru, obviously she loves him a whole lot- despite any other shortcomings in their relationship, I do believe that.

So I get why she tries to convince him not to go dungeoning, and, failing that, at least prepares him as thoroughly as she can.

But why help Mithrun? She used to hate Mithrun, but after realizing what a secretly twisted person he was, she actually thought of him more positively (oh, Milsiril). So it wasn't as if she held the kind of grudge that might motivate her to make his already-depleted life even more miserable by sending him back to the dungeons. And it wasn't that she felt bad for him either, since she didn't visit Mithrun for the first ~20 years of his recovery.

The Adventurer's Bible says that Utaya was the impetus for Mithrun returning to the Canaries, but Milsiril is the one who made the trip to see him and tell him about it.

Why would Milsiril work so hard to get her old coworker back into fighting fit? Why encourage him to return to such a dangerous lifestyle, when she was the one who chose not to mercy-kill him?

That last panel is such a crazy thing to hint at and then never elaborate on. Without it we could have just thought that Milsiril wanted the Canaries' work to continue without her, even if it seemed out of character. I think some people even assume she's just a natural caretaker as a foster mom and handwave it to include nursing Mithrun too. What could Milsiril's suspicious motives be? What does she gain from Mithrun joining the Canaries that isn't an altruistic desire to see dungeons safely sealed? Feeling a sense of responsibility for the work she left behind isn't an ulterior motive.

My theory is: Milsiril, knowing that Mithrun was empty save for the burning desire to face the demon again, wound him up like a clockwork doll and pointed him back at the dungeons.

Hoping that he'd eliminate the biggest threat to Kabru's life, before it was too late for him.
