The Master regenerating into Missy and wearing skirts and doing makeup and using her "feminine wiles" (her words not mine lol) to do evil with her silly little Mary Poppins aesthetic vs the Doctor regenerating into 13 and just. Continuing to wear pants and eat dirt. I love them both so much

#woman as in evil seductress who kills men vs woman who eats dirt and has panic attacks over the slightest hint of emotional vulnerability.#both are peak character design #I've always found it fun that Missy uses being a woman to like. marry (almost) into power and play the innocent unsuspecting woman #(she does this a lot in the audio dramas)#vs 13 who just. completely rejects the idea that her role needs to be any different bc of her gender #i think that's an interesting lil bit of characterization #and i love them both #13th doctor #missy doctor who #doctor who

I’ve got a whole tag essay down there already but I need to put this in a comment section, I just need everyone to understand that it’s fine if you only enjoy stuff with likable characters, just please god own it as a PREFERENCE and don’t try to put it forward as an objective judgment on whether a story is good or not

I'm curious given how often I see "none of the characters were good/likeable/lovable" as a criticism or reason not to recommend a book

*by this, I mean likeable to you. (meaning you like them/feel fondly towards them etc). of course it's not an objective measure, but I'm asking whether you personally liking or disliking the characters has an impact on your enjoyment of the story. doesn't matter whether they're also complex/well written/interesting/compelling etc*

#characters need to be INTERESTING #they can do that by being relatable/likable or they can do that by being assholes #I waffled between ‘occasionally’ and ‘no’ as answers a bit #and ultimately went for no because like… fundamentally no I never NEED them to be likable #but I do think it’s always worth having a conversation about expectations #if I THINK I’m about to read a fun romance novel where I’m rooting for the main characters #and instead end up in a study of a toxic ‘at least if they’re together they’re quarantined from anyone else’ relationship story #I might have a bad time bc I’m not reading the book I wanted to be reading #ALSO #if a book THINKS it has likable characters #and actually the characters are FUCKING ANNOYING AND AWFUL #that is a bad book #so it’s… I think it’s unfair to say it’s never a factor in any capacity #but it’s highly contextual HOW it’s a factor #also I went to the op to reblog this to get rid of a comment chain #and so I saw op’s tags that this what about someone’s reaction to gone girl and I’m fucking dying #like. of all things. WHY would you even TOUCH gone girl if you need likable characters in your books #this is like that gr review on house of leaves complaining that it was confusing #and I’m just like girl did you OPEN THE BOOK #there were!!!! many indications!!!!!! that perhaps this is not for you!!!!!!!!!!

I feel fandom would get along a lot better if there was mutual understanding that liking a character, agreeing with a character, and thinking the character is well constructed/executed are all separate (if often overlapping) positions, each with their separate tastes and subjectivities. Also: character portrayals are intended to make the audience feel things; this is separate from (if often overlapping with) analyzing/appreciating their actions and role in the story.

#I would queue this because it's truly not character-specific #but there is always something happening with a character so that probably wouldn't help lol #anyway I'm making this nonrebloggable because I am not interested in the tomato throwing atmosphere out there #do not clown in bad faith on this post or in my inbox please I will just delete it #op #it's just over time I do see a pattern of like “I think X character was wrong in this” and some reactions being “you *hate* X character!”#or that if you like a character you *must* agree with them and/or have such a deep an endless compassion for their faults and mistakes #that it comes all the way back around to removing their agency because HOW could they do any different #and if you do not give them this grace then it is antithetical to you liking them or enjoying them or even just being neutral on them #when this is often not the case #like as an Essek and Jonas Spahr enjoyer their fuck-ups are very essential to why they have any sort of “grow as a person” arc #characters *have* to have texture and foibles or they are stagnant in the story - let your fave fuck up a bit! As a treat!#and lastly I'll just say that my point here is NOT that everyone is always positive or that haterism doesn't exist.#Some commentary just seems to happen at different frequencies from each other and it catalyzes more angst than it needs to

#homestuck #vriska serket #terezi pyrope #vriska #terezi #vrisrezi #mic_art #screencap redraw of that one utena scene woohoo #vrisrezi and utenanthy dont share many similarities but there are some interesting parallels that can be drawn #like theyre all characters who are devoted to the respective roles they think they have #utena needs to be a prince and vriska needs to be a hero #terezi needs to cast vriska as the villain so that she can be the one to bring her to justice while anthy #is resigned to her role as the rose bride and is cast as a witch by others (and herself in a way...) to justify her suffering #im too tired to put into words all the other shit rattlign around in my brain but something something vriska society violence princes utena #something interesting to note is that in the rgu stabbing scene utena is walking to the left while is hs vriskas walking to the right #which i think is mostly a cultural difference due to english being read left to right while japanese is read right to left #changing which direction is percieved as forward #which could be read further into but could also just be the natural flow of the scene or whateevr #idk i need to peruse ohtori.nu again i looooove reading utena essays

I feel like people forget that Dagur was like the original "What if Hiccup was evil" character. Like yeah people bring up Viggo and the flop that was Grimmel but like Dagur was the og and I never see anyone bring it up in analysis of his character.

I think it's important to remember especially since while both Viggo and Dagur are "dark reflections" of Hiccup, they reflect fundamentally different parts of who Hiccup is.

Viggo is the "What if someone with Hiccup's intelligence and curiosity was evil" but Dagur was the "What if someone who grew up in a similar position to Hiccup was evil"

Son of the chief. Different from other vikings and treated badly because of that. Negative relationship with said chief father.

Dagur is also the only villain who was close in age to Hiccup & the riders (not counting Heather cause she was more of an antagonist than a villain). He's very obviously supposed to parallel Hiccup in a sort of "Hey viking society messed him up to but he handled it infinitely worse than Hiccup did"
